Indeed, our last week’s story “Planed resurgence of Independent Soldiers disrupted by Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C.” showed how the leftovers from once mighty gangs are desperately struggling to regain some of their past glory.

CFSEU-BC spokesperson Sgt. Lindsey Houghton told me on Thursday that the current situation reflects a number of things. It includes the enforcement, disruption, suppression and even prevention activities of the police forces and how police themselves have evolved.

But it also reflects some key gang members serving jail time, people such as the United Nations gang members Barzan Tilli-Choli and some of his crew, the Red Scorpions’ Bacon brothers Jamie and Jarrod (Jonathan was shot dead in Kelowna in August 2011), and Larry Amero, who was involved from the Hells Angels’ side in the Wolf Pack (alliance of Independent Soldiers, Red Scorpions and Hells Angels that were in conflict with remnants of the Dhak-Duhre and United Nations groups), and the death of

drug lines, they are looking to infiltrate each other, backstab each other, all that kind of stuff happens in that world every single day.”

Houghton added: “So people are left to sort of pick up the pieces from there and a number of people who are highly positioned in a number of those cells or groups that were associated to a number of the gangs have moved on. Many of them have either left, been killed or incarcerated. So it’s a combination of sort of all the above.”

He noted that some people who had been involved in gangs for 10 to 15 years had “seen the light” and left gangs and the gang lifestyle.

He said: “They are certainly to be commended for it because it is not an easy thing, but they’ve made that very difficult but important choice.”

Yet, “on any given day, there are still groups out there looking to take each other out, they are looking to take over each other’s

Houghton added: “Much of their overt activity has ceased and desisted because some people are dead, and some people are in jail, either here in British Columbia or across Canada or even internationally like in the case of James Riach.”

Arvind Kejriwala had better show results now RATTAN'S RUMBLE THE popular expectations from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Leader Arvind Kejriwal are indeed mammoth – and he had better show results – solid results – both in the short term and in the long term.

If he shows concrete results, he will have a good chance to make inroads in other provinces, especially Punjab where people seem to be fed up with

both the Akali Dal and the Congress Party. Indeed, both the parties must already be shaken up there.

The common man is terribly frustrated with corruption and the fact that the BJP got brutally whipped in Delhi itself shows that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his rightwing Hindu nationalist party have not inspired the kind of hope they were widely expected to.

Kejriwal’s inspirational victory (his party won 67 of the 70 seats) is a clear warning to Modi and his fellow party members to watch

their actions and words, especially regarding religious matters – something that U.S, President Barack Obama has also warned them about. Modi, who feels overwhelmingly beholden to the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) for his victory, remains reluctant to speak out, though I am sure he has been cautioning the RSS bosses discreetly to warn their members to cool it.

THE AAP victory is also a loud and clear warning to Congress Party boss Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi, who has

Facebook photos proved such a miserable failure in politics, to give their heads a good shake and make drastic changes in the way they have been running the party. The AAP’s runaway victory is being attributed to Congress supporters switching to that party.

I think the Congress needs to bring in Priyanka Gandhi as the new future leader, as I have advocated many times over the past years. After the Congress Party’s defeat last May, I wrote: “Back in January of 2013 I suggested in a write-up that the Congress should make Priyanka Gandhi Vadra the prime minister-inwaiting by getting her into the Rajya Sabha (India’s

House of Lords) while Rahul could take over his mom’s Sonia Gandhi’s position as president of the Congress Party.

Sonia could remain the real boss behind the scenes.

“I noted back then that Rahul had proved to be an utter failure and what the Congress Party desperately needed was a charismatic figure like Priyanka who bears quite a resemblance to her grandmother Indira Gandhi.

“I also noted that I could understand Sonia’s predicament in projecting her daughter as the next prime minister, but that Rahul should realize the reality of the situation himself and urge his mother to do so.

“Well now it’s even more obvious that the Congress MUST dump Rahul who proved to be a terribly weak personality while Priyanka won admiration for the way she hit back at BJP leader Narendra Modi during the election campaign, mocking him and providing a sliver of hope to the beleaguered Congress Party.

“I see the same defiance in her that I saw while covering Indira Gandhi shortly after she had suffered a humiliating defeat in 1977 just after the hated Emergency Rule. “ … Priyanka, I believe, has that same personality and defiance to revive the demoralized Congress Party once again.”

Silver lining to coming in second Surrey boxer narrowly misses gold at Canadian Youth Boxing Championships

WALKING into the Port Kells Boxing Club, located in the basement of the Port Kells Community Centre, feels like stepping back in time. The tiny, fluorescent-lit concrete room is littered with yellowing posters of past champions and boxing fight card posters of local and world championship matches.

Years of sweat hang thickly in the air.

Punching bags dangle from the ceiling amid speed bags and skipping ropes, and a wall-sized mirror commands one side of the room. A boxing ring beaten down by many epic battles is tucked away in the corner.

Sixteen-year-old Frank Hurt Secondary student Eric Basran sits alone on a small wooden bench in the gym putting on hand wrap – long strips of cotton material used to protect a fighter’s hands beneath his gloves.

He’s soon up shadow boxing in front of the mirror concentrating on his reflection, avoiding solid body shots and straight right-hand punches.

It’s his routine in a sport built on routine and Basran is realizing his practice is paying off.

He returned last week from Quebec City sporting a silver medal from the Canadian Youth Boxing Championships, held Jan. 20-24.

“He has natural athleticism and boxing ability,” said Al Harper, Basran’s coach.

“He’s got that boxing sense and is able to know what other fighters are going to do before they do it.”

Fighting as a member of Team BC and representing the Queensborough Boxing Club, Basran, fighting in the 52-kilogram weight category, defeated a fighter from Quebec in his opening match. This moved him into the gold medal final against another Quebec fighter, Thomas Blumfield, who had nearly 80 fights under his belt and a recent second-place finish at the U.S. National Championships – a challenge not lost on his coaches.

After seeing how Basran’s gold-medal opponent handled his semi-final match, the head coach for Boxing BC, Bob Pegeus, wasn’t sure how Basran – a relative newcomer to the sport – would react.

“I was a little concerned about the final,” said Pegeus of Basran’s lack of experience and having had only

seven fights under his belt.

“But every time we raise the bar, he jumps over it.”

In the final, Basran came out swinging, using his superior speed and footwork to

win the first two rounds with a 10-9 score each. He even handed Blumfield a standing-eight-count in the second round with a solid over-hand right punch, meaning he landed a shot the referee felt warranted stopping the fight for eight seconds to assess the other fighter’s ability to continue.

The fight continued into the third round with Basran’s opponent coming on strong and landing a clean shot of his own during an exchange that warranted an eight-second count against Basran.

The final round was given to the Quebec fighter with a 10-8 score, which meant the match was tied.

At that point, two more judges were brought in, with the first still calling the match a tie. However the second judge gave the match to Basran’s opponent, meaning the silver medal went to Basran.

“At first I was disappointed, but then I realized he had almost 80 more fights than me,” Basran said. “Hopefully I get on the Canadian team and get a chance to go to some international tournaments like the Commonwealth Games.”

His goal is to make it to the Olympics.

He also appointed, on Kejriwal's recommendation, six ministers: Manish Sisodia, Asim Ahmed Khan, Sandeep Kumar, Satyendra Jain, Gopal Rai and Jitender Singh Tomar.

The Kejriwal government will be sworn in at the Ramlila Maidan in central Delhi Saturday.

Following the union cabinet's recommendation, the president revoked the order issued on Feb 16, 2014 placing Delhi under central rule with effect from Feb 14, 2015.

Kejriwal is likely to retain the portfolios of home, power and finance, while Sisodia, tipped to be the deputy chief minister, has been allotted the departments of urban development, public works and education.

Jain, who was the health minister in the AAP's earlier 49-day innings, will head the same ministry.

Rai, one of the four new faces in the seven-member ministry, will be the transport minister,m and also have charge of the labour department, sources said.

Sandeep Kumar will be the minister for women and child development, Tomar will be the new law minister and Khan will be food and civil supplies minister, they added.

The Aam Aadmi Party won a staggering 67 of the 70 seats in the Delhi assembly Tuesday, leaving just three to the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Congress was wiped out.

“In my own family”: A documentary on elder abuse in South Asian families THE issue of elder abuse is on the rise within sen-

iors who are of South Asian origin living with

their extended families.

As many as 25% of South

Asian seniors live with their relatives in comparison to 5% of the general population. Factors such as low income, language and technology barriers, immigration status, high cost of housing and cultural aspects make them dependent on their caregivers. Seniors suffer behind the close door of silence just to avoid the shame and to maintain family dignity.

Reh’ma Community Services in collaboration with University of Ontario-Institute of Technology has conducted participatory action research on elder abuse in the South Asian fami-

lies. One of the findings of the study was that “South Asian elderly living in Canada for less than 10 years and who did not speak English fluently reported more elderly abuse than those who have been living for longer and whose English is more fluent.”

Quotes from the participants in the study include: * “My daughter-inlaw blamed me for things.” * “They put me down all the time for being homeless.” * “Children treated me unfairly by abandoning me.”

Based on the research work and through involvement of many seniors, stake holders, government officials and service providers, Reh'ma community services this week announced the release of the doc-

umentary “In my own family “funded by New Horizon for seniors.

The documentary shares the research work and brings solutions for intervention and prevention of Elder abuse.

Every week over 150 seniors come to Reh’ma House and speak about their needs. “We are extremely grateful to New Horizons for funding us and to all the participants and officials who helped us to make this documentary,” said Shirin Mandani, Executive Director of Reh’ma.

Elderly patient put in shower room bed for a month at Abbotsford Hospital GAYLE Duteil, President of the BC Nurses’ Union says “all patients, young and elderly deserve quality, safe patient care and clearly that is not happening at Abbotsford Hospital. The health authority is legally required to hire more nurses, fill vacancies and replace nurses on leaves. Fraser Health must do that – now.”

An elderly patient has spent the past month in a small shower room, with no toilet and no window at Abbotsford Hospital. Like many hospitals, it is overflowing with patients and has been for weeks. Many are lining the halls, including a pediatric psychiatric patient who, until recently, spent 106 hours in the hallway in Emergency.

On Wednesday, the Abbotsford ER was overcapacity by 29 patients who were all waiting for beds in wards. Mission Hospital is also experiencing extreme overcapacity.

“Surely the executives of Fraser Health want to provide safe patient care, not just for this one poor fellow stuck in the shower room, but all patients in the region,” said Duteil.

Special Investigation Team set up by India to probe 1984 anti-Sikh riots New Delhi (IANS): The government of India on Thursday set up a Special Investigation Team for fresh investigation into serious criminal cases relating to 1984 anti-Sikh riots, it was announced here.

In a series of tweets, the official Press Information Bureau said that the committee will be headed by IPS officer Pramod Ashthana and will submit its report in six months.

"SIT will re-investigate the appropriately serious criminal cases files in Delhi in connection with 1984 riots and have since been closed," the PIB tweeted.

Surrey youth soccer coach Kuldip Mahal to remain in custody in U.S. until trial A Seattle judge on Monday ordered Kuldip “Kelly” Singh Mahal, 47, of Surrey to remain in U.S. custody until his trial, following his arrest on February 3 at a park in Burlington, Washington, where he was expecting to meet a 12-year-old girl whom he had tried to entice into having sexual contact with him.

The judge appeared not to trust the Canadian justice system to monitor Mahal.

Mahal’s next court appearance is February 18.

Acting United States Attorney Annette L. Hayes on February 4 had announced that Mahal responded to a Craigslist posting and began communicating with what he believed to be a 12-year-old girl. In fact, he sent multiple sexually explicit messages and photos to an undercover agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Mahal, who works as a facilities manager for a Vancouver, B.C. tech firm, crossed the border into the U.S. at Blaine on February 3 and headed toward the park where he had agreed to meet the girl.

Mahal is a volunteer coach for a U-16 soccer team in British Columbia.

According to the complaint filed in the case, Mahal responded to a posting on the Vancouver, B.C. Craigslist site on January 15. Mahal sent a picture of his arms and upper body, and expressed interest in a sexual relationship. Mahal continued to communicate with the undercover agent even after the agent said she was 12 years old. In fact Mahal is alleged to have sent sexually explicit photos of himself and repeatedly requested the “girl” send sexually explicit photos of herself back to him.

Dal Dhatt is ITA’s Apprenticeship Advisor for South Fraser region THE Industry Training Authority (ITA) has introduced the Apprenticeship Advisor who will act as an on-the-ground resource for apprentices and employers in the South Fraser region.

Over 70 local apprentices, employers and industry representatives gathered at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel on Tuesday to meet Dal Dhatt, ITA’s Apprenticeship Advisor for the South Fraser region, along with Gary Herman, ITA CEO. As the new Apprenticeship Advisor for South Delta, Surrey, Langley and White Rock, Dhatt brings over eight years of experience motivating and counseling individuals towards employment.

Having joined the Industry Training Authority in 2007, Dhatt previously worked as the Administrator for Youth Initiatives, responsible for overseeing the Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACE IT) and Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) programs.

“ITA is necessary to ensure that our children are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow,” said Education Minister Peter Fassbender, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood.

“Dal Dhatt will be instrumental in building the knowledge base and awareness of the BC apprenticeship system and will be a key liaison to apprentices and employer sponsors.”

The initiative is also in direct response to the recently launched B.C.'s Skills for Jobs Blueprint, and recommendations made in the McDonald Report.

To date, ITA has hosted a total of 10 Apprenticeship Advisor Open House events across the province (Kelowna, Nanaimo, Terrace, Prince George, Dawson Creek, Kamloops, Victoria, Cranbrook, Abbotsford, and Surrey).

Over 670 apprentices, employers and industry representatives have attended to meet their local Apprenticeship Advisor and to learn more about the support available in their community.

Time to celebrate women’s achievements

BY SUKHDEV GREWAL THE role of a woman has evolved over the last six decades. Gone are the days when women stayed at home and were mainly responsible for the wellbeing of their families and running of the household.

Nowadays women are in powerful positions and working side by side with men. Women are now engineers, scientists, doctors, professors, lawyers, CEOs and politicians.

Although women have achieved so much, there is still some room for improvement. Some cultures still have gender inequality which may influence the well-being of women within that particular culture. As a result, a conflict arises which may well result in disrespect towards women or violence against women.

Needs assessments and research are needed for planning programs that are geared towards this vulnerable population.

Once the new immigrant South Asian woman is exposed to the western world, where they see women being treated equal to their male counterparts and respected for who they are, they may experience personal turmoil. They may start to ask for their rights to equality which ends up creating issues within the family. In order to support their family financially, these new immigrant South Asian women are having to work outside the home. This may result in women becoming empowered, independent and knowledgeable. Needless to say, this causes many of the issues where the woman’s partner may feel threatened or intimidated by this new woman.

RECOGNIZING that domestic violence or violence against women is higher in the South Asian community, the South Asian Family Association (SAFA) felt the need to take action. These actions include having a conference about violence against women that

involved having a number of community leaders from various cultures come together to discuss some of the known factors influencing this issue and possible solutions, while at the same time highlighting and celebrating women’s achievements.

This event takes place annually on International Women’s Day. On March 8, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.

A global web of rich and diverse local activities connects women from all around the world, ranging from political rallies, business conferences, and government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatrical performances, fashion parades and more. It is a celebration endorsed by the United Nations and was first celebrated in 1911.

SAFA is presenting International Women’s Day (IWD) with a South Asian focus in partnership with the Langara School of Nursing. This event will take place on March 8. This year’s theme is “Make It Happen” through education, empowerment and awareness. The objective of the conference is to provide the opportunity to explore ways in which we can all share knowledge of these goals and highlight our achievements. This

event will empower South Asian immigrant women from lower socio-economic backgrounds, who may also have lower literacy levels, to seek support. It is anticipated that social gatherings such as this will serve to empower women to utilize their innate strengths to challenge violence against women.

The day promises to be one of education and fun.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the Langara College’s front foyer and proceed to the auditorium.

Throughout the day there will be many presentations on various topics, as well as panel presentations and workshops. There will also be live performances throughout the day.

Service providers such as PICS, Mosaic, Vancouver and Lower Mainland Multicultural Support Society, Battered Women’s Support Services, and many more have been invited to participate.

On behalf of SAFA, we would like to invite you to participate in this conference via poster or oral presentations. Providers have the opportunity to come and share their resources and information via information booths. The registration fee for service providers is $50 to cover the cost of food. WSO supports Brampton Council move to introduce moment of silence THE World Sikh Organization of Canada supports Brampton City Council's move to introduce a moment of silence, in place of a prayer, to commence council meetings. The WSO made submissions to Brampton City Council via a letter and by oral submissions on Wednesday, endorsing the move, which was subsequently approved by council.

In December, Council replaced the Lord's Prayer with a non-denominational prayer.

Brampton City Council passed this decision last week in a 9-2 vote in favour of ending the practice. The move had proven contentious as some Brampton residents felt the tradition of opening meetings with the Christian prayer should not be altered.

WSO legal counsel Balpreet Singh said in his letter to council, “Brampton, and Canada more broadly, is a mosaic of people of diverse cultures, faiths and beliefs.

Accordingly, our public institutions must be religiously neutral, while still allowing for individuals to express and practice their religious beliefs freely.

Internationally renowned Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain returns with “Celtic Connections”

THE Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is bringing back Indian tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, on Saturday, March 21 at 8 p.m. in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. Known the world over for his masterful talent on percussion and esteemed intercultural collaborations, Hussain has long been

fascinated by the connection of his native country’s music to the music revered by the Celtic nations.

Hussain, one of the most highly-respected architects of world music fusion, first experimented with fusing Celtic and Indian music together in 2011 as the result of a commission he received for Glasgow’s annual Celtic music festival while in residency with the Scotland Council of the Arts. For this commission he assembled various musicians to create a 90-minute show and received such a strong response that he was requested by the UK Council of the Arts to play at the London 2012 preOlympic performances.

Since then, the group has successfully toured throughout the USA and India, and now embarks to bring this rich collaboration to audiences in Canada.

In 2012, he was named Best Percussionist in the Downbeat Critics’ Poll.

Canadian Muslims mourn murder of students from North Carolina University THE Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada said Thursday that it mourns with the families of Deah Shaddy Barakat, his wife, Yusor Abu-Salha, and sister, Razan Abu-Salha, innocent students who were murdered on February 10 in an apartment near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

Amit Kalia of Mississauga charged in murder of Shariyfa Birkett BRAMPTON: Amit Kalia, 31, of Mississauga, has been arrested and charged with seconddegree murder in the death of Shariyfa Birkett, a 29-year-old female.

Peel Regional Police were called to an address on Melanie Drive, in Brampton, on Saturday (February 7) at 4 p.m.

Birkett was found with no vital signs in a vehicle parked in one of the garage bays at HR Motors.

The investigation led to the region’s first charge of murder for 2015.

A police spokesperson said the victim was the girlfriend of the accused.

Police believe the two had stayed at a motel near the casino in Niagara

Falls on Friday evening.

The vehicle was believed to have been towed to the Melanie Drive location and police later tracked down the tow-truck driver.

According to a local newspaper, court records show that Kalia was out

on a recognizance with charges that include drug possession, theft, taking a vehicle without consent, dangerous driving and care and control of a vehicle while impaired by drugs.

Tharoor, who is the Lok Sabha member from Thiruvananthapuram, was asked questions over the ownership pattern of Kochi Tuskers to find out if Sunanda Pushkar was the front for him when she received Rs.75 crore [1 crore = 10 million] equity of the Kochi team.

The IPL controversy broke out in 2010 when Tharoor was minister of state for external affairs in the then United Progressive Alliance government.

He had to resign from the government over the controversy.

Tharoor's domestic help Narayan Singh and his driver Bajrangi were also questioned along with three other people, whose names were not disclosed by police.

Since the SIT began probing the murder case at the start of this year, Narayan Singh has been questioned twice and Bajrangi once.

Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said Tharoor was questioned based on information concerning the case.

"After examining his answers during the last interrogation, we questioned him again.

Some associates of Tharoor are also being questioned," Bassi told reporters here.

Two journalists - Nalini Singh and Rahul Kanwal have already deposed before the SIT. VOICE adds: LAST year, the Toronto Star report said that Pushkar was a Canadian citizen who moved to Toronto in 1999 with her son, but her stay was “a bit of a mystery.”

Pushkar is said to have moved to Toronto with her son Shiv (from her second marriage) from Dubai with a banker of Pakistani origin reportedly after financial losses. Her second husband returned to India where he allegedly committed suicide in 1997.

Jacob Joseph Puthenparambil, a digital media specialist in Singapore who was chief of staff for Tharoor from early 2009 to June 2010, said that after her husband’s death, her son, who was then 5 or 6, stopped talking because of shock. Pushkar learned that she could get care in Canada for Shiv, who is now an actor living in Mumbai, said the Star.

She told Tehelka, a weekly news magazine in New Delhi, in 2010 that she started life in Canada from scratch, doing odd jobs for some time before getting into the IT sector.

She said that they tied up with companies like Compaq and headhunted in India for them. Then she started working with a San Francisco company called Valley Resources and made good money, enrolling her son in a private school.

She also reportedly worked for Noble House International, a global real estate company. In 2004, a company called Best Homes sent her to Dubai to set up its real estate operations.

The Star said that she bought a house for $325,000 in Markham in December 2000, according to property records, and that the house is still in her name.

Pushkar, who first met Tharoor in 2009 in Dubai when he was still married to Christa Giles, a Canadian diplomat he had met at the UN, married him in 2010.

According to the groups, there are also worrying signs that the recommendations are being used to justify worsening conditions for detainees.

Lucía Vega Jiménez, a Mexican woman held in custody by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) at the Vancouver International Airport, died on December 24, 2013.

Information about this tragic death was only made public a month after her death, following news reports. An inquest was held in September 2014.

The three organizations regret that CBSA’s response to date to the inquest has been focused on measures to physically prevent suicide, while the recommendations to improve conditions for detainees and to close the detention centre at Vancouver International Airport have not been addressed. They pointed out that no apparent action been taken on the most important recommendation in the view

LOBAT Sadrehashemi, executive member of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers, stated: “The inquest highlighted that CBSA is in an accountability crisis, but Ottawa seems to be ignoring the key recommendations of the coroner’s jury to improve the agency.

Months after the jury recommended, loudly and clearly, that CBSA needs to have an oversight body, there has been no apparent action. This is unacceptable.

CBSA is a police force dealing with some of the most vulnerable in our society.

When something goes wrong, there continues to be no independent body to investigate.”

The Canadian Council for Refugees has learned that the CBSA is introducing new requirements for common washrooms for detainees, in response to the inquest recommendations. These new requirements will be implemented first in the Toronto Immigration Holding Centre.

The CCR is concerned about aspects of the plan.

“The response to the tragic death of Lucía Vega Jiménez should not be to make conditions worse for detainees,” said Loly Rico, Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR) President. “We are deeply troubled that CBSA is planning to reduce detainees’ privacy by introducing common washrooms. Suicide prevention measures should be guided by respect for human dignity and concern for the individual’s mental health, not measures focused solely on physical prevention of suicide.” The CCR was a participant in the coroner’s inquest.

The CCR has published its comments on the recommendations of the inquest jury at: http://ccrweb.ca/en/position-vegajimenez-recommendations In B.C., there has been no plan announced to follow through on the recommendation to close the airport detention facility.

Get Josh Paterson, Executive Director of the BCCLA – which participated in the coroner’s inquest – added: “CBSA has agreed to implement some merely minimal safeguards at the Vancouver airport holding centre, such as actually having CBSA staff on site weekdays instead of just private security guards. These measures and they are not enough to comply with the coroner’s jury recommendations. all for The inquest evidence made clear that the Vancouver Airport Immigration Holding Centre has been plagued with problems and fails to meet basic international human rights standards. The jury for the first 6 months. recommended that the airport centre be shut down and the elimination of the use $25 after 6 months. of private security guards in detainee care. Instead of doubling down on a broken system, it’s time for CBSA and the federal government to shut the airport holding centre down.”

On the topic of oversight, Paterson asked: “We know at least nine people have died in CBSA custody since 2000.

How many people need to die before the government ensures that CBSA has independent oversight?”

The death of Vega Jiménez, and the coroner’s inquest that followed it, once again highlighted the lack of any oversight over the actions of CBSA. While CBSA has sweeping police powers, including the power to arrest and detain people, it is unlike most other police forces in Canada because there is no independent oversight body to review its actions and to ensure respect for the human rights of refugees, migrants, and Canadians who deal with the agency. Municipal and provincial police across Canada, as well as the RCMP, have various forms of complaint agencies and independent investigation agencies to supervise their conduct.

Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation welcomes new leadership at TransLink THE Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation on Wednesday welcomed Doug Allen as new interim CEO of TransLink, calling his appointment an important first step in the changes needed to move the region forward with its transit and transportation needs.

“We have heard loud and clear from residents across the region that they value the services that TransLink provides, but that they want and expect meaningful change to ensure TransLink works better,” said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Chair of the Mayors’ Council. “A

Big G pumped for game once again

BIG G was pumped for Thursday night's Harlem Globetrotters game, following 24 hours in the Vancouver Police Department lock-up.

Big G, the Harlem Globetrotters’ 10-foot inflatable mascot, was stolen from their tour bus on Monday night.

Around 4 p.m. on Monday, Big G was safely tucked in his case in the luggage compartment of the team’s tour bus, parked at West Hastings and Seymour Street. When the team returned to the bus early Tuesday morning, they discovered that Big G, his battery pack and the teams’

sound mixer had been stolen.

Tuesday night, VPD officers responded to an East Vancouver apartment to recover a stolen computer.

While inside the suite,

police located a number of other suspected stolen items. Without being able to track down the rightful owners, the goods were taken to the VPD's property office where they were secured for the night to await further investigation.

Following Wednesday’s media coverage of the Globetrotters stolen mascot, officers recognized that one of the items resembled Big G. Late Wednesday afternoon, Big G was reunited with his teammates, as the Globetrotters prepared for Thursday night's game.

Conservative MP Eve Adams joins Liberals EVE Adams, MP for Mississauga— Brampton South, was welcomed Monday to the Liberal Caucus by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

Her partner, Dimitri Soudas, who had been in the Prime Minister’s Office and knows Stephen Harper inside out, will also be backing the Liberals, making Conservatives a bit jittery about what all he will reveal to the Liberals.

Adams later confirmed that she will seek nomination in the Toronto riding of Eglinton-Lawrence. She currently represents the riding of Mississauga Brampton-South. Currently, Finance Minister Joe Oliver holds the seat.

“Eve Adams entered public service to be her community’s voice in Ottawa – not Stephen Harper’s voice in her community – and today I am pleased to welcome her to the Liberal Caucus,” said Trudeau. “Ms. Adams has demonstrated passion and commitment to her constituents as a City Councillor, Member of Parliament, and Parliamentary Secretary. British Columbia tops the health charts

B.C. ranks third in the world for health performance behind only Switzerland and Sweden, and is ranked the number one province in Canada, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s report card on health released Thursday.

British Columbia was also the only province in the country to receive an A score overall.

“This ranking reflects the high priority government places on the health and quality of life of British Columbians,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “We have achieved this ranking while maintaining among the lowest per capita health-care spending.

This recognition is not a reason for us to slow down our work or settle for the status quo, but rather an opportunity to build on our successes.”

British Columbians have a life expectancy of 82.2 years, which ranks among the longest in the world. Out of 11 report card indicators used to measure health performance, B.C. scored four A grades in life expectancy; premature mortality; self-reported health status; and mortality due to cancer. Six B grades were scored in infant mortality; mortality due to heart disease and stroke; self-reported mental health; mortality due to respiratory disease; mortality due to diseases of the nervous system; and suicides.

High grades in life expectancy, premature mortality and infant mortality reflect not only the health of individuals, but also that of B.C.’s overall health system and the socio-economic health and well-being of the province. In particular, infant mortality rates are cited by many health experts as a “sentinel indicator of population health and the well-being of a society.”

“B.C. has a fundamentally different approach to providing health care than some other provinces, and other countries, in that government and doctors work closely as partners to benefit patient care,” said Dr. Bill Cavers, president of Doctors of BC. “More than a decade ago, B.C. doctors and government invested in a collaborative approach on issues of concern to patients, the doctors who provide the care, and the healthcare system that makes it all happen, and it is gratifying to see this investment contributing to such positive results. We look forward to continuing this collaboration.”

The lowest grade B.C. received was a single C in mortality due to diabetes, and yet B.C. has the lowest diabetes prevalence rate in Canada.

The report also indicates British Columbians have such high health outcomes because of their healthier lifestyle choices, such as particularly low daily smoking and drinking rates and the highest population percentage that is physically active during their leisure time, along with the lowest obesity rate in Canada.

“The BC Healthy Living Alliance is pleased to see the health of British Columbians ranked so highly among other provinces and countries,” said Mary Collins, director of the BC Healthy Living Alliance Secretariat.

Throne speech sets course to grow diverse economy

IN her speech from the throne on Tuesday, Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon outlined the government’s agenda to create jobs and opportunity throughout British Columbia growing a diverse economy to fund vital public services.

In the session ahead, government will continue to build on its progress implementing the BC Jobs Plan under which more than 70,000 new jobs have been created since 2011.

Premier Clark ignores families, gives top income earners a break: Horgan WHILE B.C. families are paying more for everything and wages aren’t keeping up, Premier Christy Clark has chosen to give a $230 million tax break to B.C.’s top 2 percent of income earners, said New Democrat Leader John Horgan on Tuesday.

“This government is out of touch with real life for B.C. families. Today, Premier Christy Clark showed she doesn’t even know who is hurting and who needs a break. She offered no comfort for British Coast Mountain Bus Company staff celebrated B.C. Family Day at Vancouver’s Fraserview Hall on January 8.

Killing Machines

“AMERICA’S Top Killing Machine,” an article in the January 12, 2015 edition of The Atlantic magazine references data from the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) showing that the top five causes of death in America today are heart disease, followed by cancer, chronic respiratory disease, and stroke. Number five is ‘accidental’ death from all causes, and drilling down into these is, obviously, the focus.

The last two comparable years for which alleged data is available still show that car crash fatalities in the United States are higher than firearm fatalities at 33,561 and 32,251 respectively.

The historical perspective of the Atlantic magazine article begins at the turn of the 20th century when infectious diseases were responsible for almost half of US deaths in large cities. The technologies

that killed were in the work place where “before modern labour laws… thousands of American workers died in textile mills and other factories.

Heavy machinery was hazardous…but chemicals and asbestos killed many workers, too.” But car ownership was on the rise and, very soon, and then “for the better part of a century, the machine most likely to kill an American … [was] the automobile.”

Today the US population is about 320 million. By some reports, there is approximately that number of firearms owned by American civilians. US motor vehicle ownership—according to World Bank statistics—is on a per person basis significantly less, at 786 per 1,000 people or roughly 250 million. Accordingly, while there are more motor vehicles than guns, there are more motor vehicle deaths than firearm related deaths.

Colliding motor vehicles are still definitely a big social problem.

Fortunately, car crash fatalities have been declining for a number of years – historically, a long overdue trend. Important contributing factors include improvements in road design, significant improvements in safety technologies in vehicles, tougher impaired driving

laws, and tougher licensing requirements resulting from graduated licensing programmes.

Changing attitudes, especially among young people, about ‘car culture’ has meant less driving.

Higher gas prices have helped. The Atlantic magazine article notes, parenthetically, that: “A $2 drop in gasoline is linked to some 9,000 additional road fatalities per year in the United States, NPR recently reported.”

Firearms data, according Atlantic magazine, is “a more complicated picture.” The article suggests that available firearms data is suspect and possibly inaccurate and that firearms may pose a greater threat to our well-being as North Americans than the mishandled automobile. The common sense challenge to this vision of conspiracy is that everyone knows of someone – relative, friend, neighbour, coworker etc. – who has been involved in a motor vehicle accident. How many of us have a personal connection to someone who has been shot?

An international perspective is also useful in focusing reformist energy. One interpretation of the Wikipedia article Traffic Related Deaths Internationally, (also a guide as to where not to spend your next vaca-
