The nationalist pitch of abolition of Article 370 in J&K and Balakot air strike didn’t help BJP New Delhi (IANS): The Haryana Assembly poll verdict on Thursday threw up a hung House, with no party reaching the majority figures, in contrast to Maharashtra where the BJP-Shiv Sena combine was comfortably placed to retain power.

In Haryana, the ruling BJP emerged as the single largest party by winning 33 seats and leading in 7 others but fell short of the halfway mark by 5 seats.

The Congress, on the other hand, showed significant progress from its performance in the last Assembly elections by winning 29 seats and leading in 2. It had got 15 in the 2014 Assembly polls.

The nearly year-old Jannayak Janata Dal (JJP) was victorious in 10 constituencies, making it a possible kingmaker, along with 7 Independents.

INLD, which ruled the state for four times, was leading merely in 1 seat on Thursday.

The outcome of the Assembly polls held on October 21 is a setback for the BJP, which had won 47 seats in the last state elections in 2014 and had been expressing confidence about raising its tally beyond 75 seats this time, using the nationalist pitch of abolition of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and Balakot air strike.

The results came as a shocker for the saffron party, particularly since it had won all the 10 seats in the Lok Sabha elections held just five months back. The Congress had failed to open account in the AprilMay Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP got 36.5 per cent votes while the Congress bagged 28.1 per cent votes.

The BJP had formed the government in Haryana for the first time in 2014, when it improved its tally from 4 in the previous elections. The INLD, which ruled the state the last time from 2000 to 2004, stood second with 19 seats in the last Assembly elections and was the main Opposition party in the outgoing House.

JJP was formed in December last year after Dushyant Chautala, grandson of 4-time Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, split from INLD following a bitter fight in the family.

The Congress has already begun

efforts to woo JJP leader Dushyant Chautala but he has refused to spell out his future course of action, saying it will be decided after the party’s meeting on Friday.

In Maharashtra, where 288 seats are at stake, the BJP won 72 seats and was leading in 31 while its ally Shiv Sena bagged 47 seats and was ahead in 10 constituencies.

From the Opposition camp, the Congress won 31 seats and was leading at 15 while its alliance partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 45 and was leading at 9 seats. Going by the results and trends, the BJP’s tally is fewer by 19

seats compared to its performance in the last Assembly elections held in 2014 when it got 122 seats. Shiv Sena had 63 seats last time.

The NCP improved its performance significantly as it had got 41 seats in the last Assembly elections, when the Congress had got 42 seats.

In the by-polls held in 51 Assembly constituencies across 17 states, the BJP won 16 Assembly seats and was leading in one. The Congress, which was decimated in the general elections in May, bagged 11 seats in the by-elections held on October 21.

Assembly poll results moral defeat for BJP: Congress “Both Modi and BJP were silent on real issues like farmer crisis, economy in shambles, unemployment, rupee depreciation” New Delhi (IANS): After improving its seat tally in the Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly elections, the Congress on Thursday asserted that the poll results are an indication of a moral defeat for the BJP and the party differs with BJP chief Amit Shah’s view that the saffron party had won big.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma said that the party accepts the people’s mandate with “honour and humility”.

“We want to say that this is a moral defeat for the BJP. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah’s and their entire leadership was far from ground reality and their entire campaign was based on issues not concerning masses,” the former union minister said.

Sharma accused the BJP of running a misleading campaign during the elections and said that they “misused governance, administration was in their possession, they had all means available to influence people”.

“But both Modi and BJP were silent on real issues like farmer crisis, economy in shambles, unemployment, rupee depreciation.

None of them spoke on these issues. Despite what was shown was completely different,” he said.

On Thursday, the Congress won 31 seats in Maharashtra and was leading on 15 seats. The party on the other hand won 29 seats in

Haryana and was leading on two seats. The Congress had won 42 seats in Maharashtra and 15 seats in Haryana in 2014 Assembly polls.

Taking pot shots at the BJP over the dip in their vote share, Sharma said, “What was shown on the exit polls were proven wrong in these elections as we said earlier. In Maharashtra, BJP had 52 per cent of the vote share while Congress had 32 per cent during the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.

“Looking at the vote percentage at that time, the BJP-Shiv Sena had an edge over 224 seats in the state just four months ago, while today they have got around 154 seats which is 90 seats short,” Sharma pointed out.

Sharma then pointed out that at the time of Lok Sabha elections in Haryana, BJP had 58.2 per cent of the vote share and they were leading on 79 seats.

“And today BJP has lost majority,” he said. Commenting on BJP President’s remarks that the mandate in Haryana and Maharashtra was a big victory for the party, Sharma said, “We disagree with Shah that BJP has won big as they have lost.”

He said “if we agree with Shah’s views then we have to change the definition of victory”. The Deputy Lok Sabha leader further said that Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has lost the moral right to continue in power.

Sharma said that Congress’ Leader of Opposition in Haryana and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda appealed to all nonBJP parties to come together to honour this anti-BJP mandate and form an alternative government as the mandate is against the BJP. Targeting the defectors and the rebel leaders, Sharma said that a number of people defected and joined the BJP and Shiv Sena before elections.

“And the voters have taken a proper report from them as most of them have lost in the elections,” he said referring to the rebel NCP leader and direct descendent of Chatrapati Shivaji, Udayanraje Bhosale who lost in the Lok Sabha bypolls in Maharashtra and several Congress and NCP defectors losing in both the states.

Sharma said that there was no reason for the BJP to celebrate. The Congress leader said that the BJP has become so arrogant and they were still in campaign mode so it will be tough to stop them from celebrating.

“The BJP campaigned extensively, but it is the maturity, intelligence and honesty of the voters of Maharashtra and Haryana that they have voted to maintain balance of democracy in the country. This is the beginning of a mass movement,” Sharma said.

He highlighted that the country today faces a “deep crisis” while the government remains “unper-

turbed”. “Their only focus is to fully wrest power using undemocratic means.

It was clear from these results that they cannot frighten the public,” he said.

He said BJP lost the byelections in Gujarat, the home state of Modi and Shah.

“The leaders (like Alpesh

Thakur) who defected in Gujarat have also been taught a lesson. We have also won by-elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab.”

Thakore had joined the Congress in 2017 ahead of the Gujarat Assembly polls.

He resigned from Congress and also as an MLA and

joined the BJP last month.

“These results indicate that the public cannot be fooled, its intelligence cannot be questioned. Now we hope that the Prime Minister will leave campaigning and work on the country’s economy, farmer crisis, and unemployment,” Sharma added.

Pakistan jumps 28 places on ease of doing business index Islamabad (IANS): Pakistan has risen 28 spots to 108th position in the global ease of doing business rankings this year, according to World Bank posting on its website on Thursday.

It was placed at 136th spot among 190 countries in the ranking last year.

Pakistan also became one of the top 10 business climate improvers due to enactment

of six regulatory reforms, Xinhua reported, citing the World Bank’s Doing Business 2020 study.

“This rise is significant and made possible by collective and coordinated actions of federal government and provincial governments of Sindh and Punjab over the past year,” the report quoted World Bank’s Country Director for

Pakistan Illango Patchamuthu as saying.

“The accelerated reform agenda has many noteworthy features to improve quality of regulations, reduce time and streamline processes. This momentum needs to be sustained for Pakistan to continue to make progress,” Patchamuthu said.

Authorities made the approval process for obtaining construction permit easier and faster in Karachi and Lahore, besides making registration of electricity and property easier for businessmen.

Moreover, Pakistan also eased the process for paying taxes by introducing online payment modules for value-added taxes and corporate income taxes.

The government also lowered the corporate income tax rate for 2018 fiscal year. It reduced the number of payments from 47 to 34 and the number of hours required to comply with tax requirements per year from 294 to 283.

Responding to the World Bank’s report, Prime Minister Imran Khan lauded “all the

people in the government who worked hard to make this happen”.

“Pakistan achieves biggest improvement in its history in World Bank’s ease of doing business rankings. Over last decade, Pakistan’s ranking had slipped more than 50 places.

Now, we have improved 28 places,” Khan said in a series of tweets and added they had a long way to go and before 2020 they would make remarkable achievement in improving business climate.

Northern Army Commander suffers facial bruises in chopper mishap New Delhi (IANS): Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh escaped with “facial bruises” after the helicopter he was travelling in “force-landed” in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Army sources said the bruises suffered by the Army Commander are minor in nature and there is no danger to his life. A computed tomography (CT) scan was also conducted on him to rule out any serious injuries.

The chopper, a Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter belonging to the Indian Army, developed technical snags while carrying nine crew members and passengers, including Lt Gen Singh. It force-landed in a general area in Mandi near Poonch town of Jammu and Kashmir.

The aircraft was being flown by Army pilot Lieutenant Colonel B.S. Nambiar, while his co-pilot was a Naval pilot.

“The Naval co-pilot has

sustained a serious back injury from the impact of the force-landing while a technician is suspected to have sustained a leg fracture. Medical examinations have been conducted upon all nine crew members and passengers. There is no danger to their lives, said an Army source.

The first respondents after

the incident were local villagers in the Mandi area.

Sources said they came forward to help the injured crew and passengers, before an emergency team was rushed to the spot.

The Dhruv is a twin-engine five-ton class advanced light helicopter indigenously developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Punjab bypolls: Congress wins 3 seats, SAD bags 1 Chandigarh (IANS): In the bypolls held in Punjab on October 21, the ruling Congress on Thursday won three seats -- Jalalabad, Mukerian and Phagwara -- while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) emerged victorious in Dakha.

In Dakha, Congress candidate Sandeep Sandhu, a confidant of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, lost to Akali Dal’s Manpreet Singh Ayali by 14,672 votes. In Jalalabad, which is considered an Akali bastion, Congress candidate Raminder

Awla defeated SAD nominee Raj Singh Dibipura by a margin of 16,663 votes.

Congress’ Indu Bala won from Mukerian by defeating BJP nominee Jangi Lal Mahajan by a margin of 3,440 votes.

In Phagwara, Congress nomi-

nee Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal won over BJP nominee Rajesh Bagha by a comfortable margin of 26,116 votes.

The Jalalabad seat was vacated by SAD President Sukhbir Badal, while the Dakha seat was vacated by the Aam Aadmi

Party’s H.S. Phoolka.

BJP’s Som Parkash vacated the Phagwara seat, while Mukerian went to the polls following the demise of sitting Congress MLA Rajnish Babbi.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh hailed the Congress victories,

particularly in Sukhbir Badal’s self-proclaimed stronghold of Jalalabad, saying it was a total rejection of the negative agenda of the Akalis, who continued to indulge in petty politicking in the wild hope of regaining the confidence of the people.

85 envoys, officials pay obeisance at Golden Temple Amritsar (IANS): A total of 85 foreign envoys and high-level functionaries on Tuesday paid obeisance at the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh shrine, as they attended celebrations to mark the upcoming 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. They were accompanied by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations’ (ICCR) President Vinay Sahasrabuddhe.

After paying obeisance, the delegation partook ‘langar’ in the shrine complex.

The diplomats included ambassadors of Australia, Mongolia, Morocco, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

The Deputy Chief of the US Mission was also part of the delegation.

The visit was organised by the ICCR in collaboration with the Punjab government and the Shiromani Gurudwara Par-

bandhak Committee.

“During my visit with the Resident Foreign Heads of Missions to Guru Di Nagri, I was delighted to meet some of my old friends & prominent citizens of the holy city,” Puri tweeted.

affairs, controls Sikh religious affairs and manages gurd-

waras in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, including

Navjot Kaur Sidhu distances from Congress New Delhi (IANS): The Congress appears to be facing a setback in Punjab.

Former Amritsar MLA and wife of former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, Navjot Kaur, has distanced from the party. Her husband is the Congress MLA from Amritsar East.

Navjot Kaur has said she is no more associated with any party now, and that she will focus on social work.

Her remarks came at Verka, a suburb near Amritsar, where she had gone for inaugurating a social event.

She is upset as she was denied ticket for Lok Sabha elections early this year. She tried to get nomination from Amritsar, and then Chandigarh. But the party chose to field veteran Pawan Kumar Bansal from Chandigarh.

Navjot Kaur Sources say her move could be a pressure tactic as Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh may soon expand his Cabinet, and there could be chance for her husband to get a cabinet berth again.

The couple was in the BJP before joining the Congress.

She was a minister in the Akali-BJP government.

Navjot Kaur has alleged that many in the Congress have given a wrong feedback to the Chief Minister about her husband and conspired

against him.

After joining Congress, Sidhu was made a minister, but he could not get along with the Chief Minister, so he resigned. Sidhu was upset that his department was changed without taking him into confidence.

Sidhu did not campaign for the party in the recent assembly polls in neighbouring Haryana. His close aides said he was working for his constituency in Amritsar.

Navjot Kaur has said she will work for her assembly and will be ready to protest if her demands are ignored.

But she said her husband Navjot Singh Sidhu is in the Congress and is working for the party, but she did not answer why he chose to stay away from the campaign.

Housefull 4: What makes Akshay Kumar-led Housefull franchise a hit every single time Housefull 4, the fourth instalment of the hit comedy fran-

chise, is all set to arrive this Diwali with the original star

cast of Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Boman Irani,

Chunky Panday as well as some new entrants. Housefull is one of the few Bollywood comedy franchises that have nailed it every single time, others being Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal and Indra Kumar’s Dhamaal series.

Coming with an ensemble cast of Kriti Sanon, Bobby Deol, Kriti Kharbanda, Pooja Hegde and many others, Housefull 4 looks promising and is expected to hit bull’s-eye the fourth time.

The film is set in two timelines and has Akshay leading the cast in this reincarnation comedy. With many more factors adding to the hype around the film, here’s why the Housefull series continues to remain a hit even after a decade of its inception: Akshay is a permanent member of the Housefull franchise.

Concept of confusion The central theme of all the Housefull instalments has been about mistaken identities and comedy of errors. Akshay’s character in the original was seen calling all the leading female actors his wife in the original. Housefull 2 was a curious case of Jolly – the real, the fake and the liar. Housefull 3, too, revolved around the theme of lead actors faking different identities to marry the girl of their choice. For the latest instalment, the makers have chosen to enter another timeline and have based the story around the theme of reincarnation. All the characters have two distinct looks in the film -- one from the empire of Sitamgarh and the other in present-day London.

Housefull 4 is the big Diwali release of the year and is expected to gain despite its clash with two more Bollywood films, Made In China and Saand Ki Aankh. However, it comes three years after the last instalment and has star power to back it up.

The festival of Diwali is special for all Indians and especially Bollywood, who doesn’t fail to impress us with their celebrations.

Amitabh Bachchan, who is recuperating from a small medical hiccup, will be hosting his annual Diwali party after Lakshmi Puja on Sun-

day, October 27 at his Juhu residence. The legend is hosting this bash after a gap of two years as in 2017, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s father had passed away while in 2018, Shweta Bachchan Nanda’s father-in-law, Rajan Nanda went through the same. So, celebrations were out of the question but this year, it’s going to a gala affair at the Bachchan residence.

Honda Canada’s Green Dealer Recognition Program for Honda Dealerships TORONTO, ON: Honda Canada’s Green Dealer Recognition Program, designed to recognize dealers across the country who are taking a comprehensive approach to implementing environmentally-responsible business operations. This initiative is part of a continued effort to support our vision of the future, Blue Skies for Our Children, offering future generations the ability to enjoy life in a sustainable society. By 2025, Honda Canada’s goal for the program to achieve $2.18M in energy reduction savings and 16,500 metric tons of CO2e per year; equivalent to the annual energy use of 3,864 homes, the carbon captured by 19,419 acres of forest each year, or the offset of 68.6 million kilometres driven by Honda vehicles annually1.

The Green Dealer Recognition Program awards are presented to dealers who quantifiably reduce their environmental impact, beginning with a minimum 10 per cent reduction in total energy use at their dealerships. The program offers three achievement levels: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Silver-level dealers must achieve a 10 per cent reduction in total energy use, Gold-level requires dealers to achieve

a 30 per cent energy reduction while Platinumlevel requires a 50 per cent energy use reduction.

Additional program prerequisites for award eligibility require dealerships to track monthly energy & water use, use programmable thermostats in all dealership space types, and implement a comprehensive recycling program. Dealers who are Electric Grid Neutral2 can automatically earn a Platinum award.

Honda Canada uses Altura Associates, a thirdparty evaluator, to conduct environmental audits for participating dealers across the country, recommend strategies for reducing their energy use, and ensure performance levels are maintained.
