Trump’s great India show New Delhi (IANS): The public reception for US President Donald Trump in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat will include an exhibition of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and 28 snippets from India’s rich and diverse culture.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said at a press briefing here on Wednesday that “the highlight of the program in Ahmedabad will be the exhibition of India’s rich and diverse culture and heritage to President Trump in a public manner that has few parallels in India or elsewhere.”

The February 24-25 trip will be Trump’s first state visit to India and also a first standalone visit by a US President to India.

Trump’s visit will be brief but intense, with all essential elements of a state visit squeezed in 36 hours.

Besides New Delhi, Trump will visit Ahmedabad and Agra during his two-day trip.

From the moment of Trump and First Lady Melania’s arrival at the airport on February 24, the delegates will be treated to a display of famed Indian hospitality and India’s unity in diversity, Shringla said.

Trump and Melania will be welcomed by a ‘Shankhnaad’ recital or playing of the conches along with dance performances, the Gujarat government said.

Around 19 artists will be performing the ‘Shankhnaad’ as soon as Trump emerges out of Air Force One, the official aircraft of the US president, on their arrival. The entire airport area will reverberate with conch tunes believed to be the sound of the ‘Brahmnaad’.

In his honour, an event which has been named ‘Namaste Trump’ will be held at the newly reconstructed, largest cricket stadium in the world at Motera. The event will be similar to the ‘Howdy Modi’ event which was hosted by the Indian-American community for Modi in Houston last year.

In what is being billed as the great ‘Indian road show’, as many as 28 stages representing various parts of the country are being set up along Trump’s route from the airport to the stadium in Ahmedabad.

The show will depict different events in the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Tens of thousands of people, including artistes showcasing their art from different states and Union

Territories, are expected to greet Trump along the way.

From Ahmedabad, Trump and his wife will fly to Agra where they will spend an hour at India’s iconic monument Taj Mahal before the sunset.

On February 25, the US President and the First Lady will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. This will be followed by a visit to Rajghat where the couple will pay respects at the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.

Trump and Modi will hold restricted and delegation-level talks on strategic partnerships at the Hyderabad House. Later, Modi will host a lunch for Trump, following which the two leaders will address the media.

In the afternoon, Trump is expected to attend certain private events at the US Embassy, including a private roundtable with industry representatives.

Trump’s last meeting will be with President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in the evening before he leaves for the US.

MEANWHILE, ahead of Trump’s visit to India, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Modi cleared the purchase of 24 American helicopters for the Indian Navy. The deal to procure MH-60R Seahawk helicopters is worth Rs $2.6 billion.

Last year former Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had approved the proposal to procure the choppers which are manufactured by the Lockheed Martin group.

The Trump administration also gave clearance after the US government rolled out a new “Buy American” plan in 2018 that had relaxed restrictions on sales, saying it would bolster the US defence industry and create jobs at home.

The deal is likely to be inked during Trump’s visit.

The 24 helicopters would be a big boost to the Navy. The multi-role helicopters will be equipped with Hellfire missiles and torpedoes, and are meant to help the Indian Navy track submarines in the Indian Ocean, where China is expanding its presence.

Currently, P8i aircraft are being used to keep vigil on enemy submarines.

The US State Department had approved the sale of the choppers to India last year along with radars, torpedoes and 10 AGM-114 Hellfire missiles.

A week ago, the US State Department had also said it had approved an Indian request for an Integrated Air Defence Weapon System for an estimated cost of $1.87 billion, which would further strengthen the two countries’ defence ties.

The two sides are expected to move forward on the deal over the year.

UN chief visits Kartarpur gurdwara in Pakistan Islamabad (IANS): United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday visited Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan’s Narowal district.

Pakistan’s Minister of Religious Affairs Pir Noorul Haq Qadri and other officials accompanied Guterras on the visit, during which the UN chief was briefed on the Kartarpur corridor.

Guterres said that the opening of the Kartarpur corridor is a “practical proof of Pakistan’s desire for peace and interfaith harmony”, Radio Pakistan reported.

Guterres also visited the community kitchen (langar) at the gurdwara, where he was served a traditional meal of rice and lentils. The kitchen caters to all Sikh pilgrims visiting the religious place, providing them free meals as per the Sikh tradition, Dawn reported.

Kolkata (IANS): The political blame game over the death of actor-turned-Trinamool-Congress-MP Tapas Paul intensified in West Bengal on Wednesday, as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held the BJP-led central government’s “political vengeance” responsible for his demise, while the saffron outfit hit back by blaming her for Paul’s “tragic end”.

Ahmed and Prasun Banerjee underwent multiple grillings by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate in the Narada sting case, while Pal was arrested by the CBI in connection with his association with the Rose Valley group, one of the companies under investigation in the ponzi scam.

Lashing out at the Centre’s BJP-led dispensation, the Chief Minister said its behaviour was akin to political vengeance.

“This sort of behaviour is akin to political vengeance. Nobody is able to escape the vengeful plans of the Centre,” she said.

“I don’t know what the game is. I don’t know what the strategy is. If anybody violates the law, then law will run its course. But that doesn’t mean that for days and months they would be subjected to humiliation and insults. Even in murder cases, people get bail after three months,” she added.

Countering Banerjee, state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh said she and her party Trinamool were responsible for Paul’s death.

“When Tapas Paul was in jail, she never went to see him.

Who is responsible for Paul’s tragic end? Whose hand is there? Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool are squarely responsible,” he said.

Paul passed away on Tuesday.

Chandigarh (IANS): Tightening the noose around the big names involved in the drug trade, the Punjab Police’s Special Task Force (STF) on Wednesday arrested former Subordinate Services Board (SSB) member and Akali leader, Anwar Masih, in connection with the massive drug haul from his house in village Sultanwind last month.

Investigations by the police had also revealed that Masih’s house was used by the accused for refining and manufacturing drugs for over a month before the racket was busted.

Despite being given time to prove the tenancy of his property, Masih could not

Punjab to fill 550 posts in medical colleges Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab Cabinet on Tuesday approved creation of 550 posts in the Government Medical Colleges at Patiala and Amritsar with the objective of further improving and streamlining the functioning of these institutions.

The new posts would 66 paramedics of technical nature, 464 critical posts of nurses, technicians and class IV employees and 20 posts in lab projects, an official spokesperson said after the meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

These posts would be instrumental in putting into use the medical machinery, equipment and infrastructure, lying idle due to paucity of staff, thus providing better healthcare services to the people, said the spokesperson.

In addition, the Cabinet gave the nod for creation and filling of five new posts in the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, along with revival of the already sanctioned nine posts under its restructuring plan.

Punjab’s Princepal Singh, Amaan Sandhu part of India squad for Window 1

New Delhi (IANS): The Basketball Federation of India on Tuesday announced the senior men’s squad that will suit up for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

The team will play it’s first of two games in Window 1 of the qualifiers, on Friday against Bahrain at the Manama, Khalifa Sport City. A couple of days after that, the team will travel to Baghdad to face-off against Iraq at the Al Shaeb Hall.

India is placed in group D alongside Iraq, Bahrain and Lebanon. As per the latest FIBA men’s

rankings, India (74) is the second-best team in the group while Lebanon, Iraq, and Bahrain are ranked 55th, 79th, and 113th respectively.

While key veteran players like Satnam Singh and Amjyot Singh (reportedly banned for 3 years) are missing, 19-year-old NBA Global Academy student-athlete Princepal Singh is part of this roster.

Singh, who recently led Punjab to gold in the U-21 category in the 2020 Khelo India Youth Games, has been at the NBA Global Academy

in Canberra, Australia for over a year.

Also part of the squad is 17-year-old Amaan Sandhu.

Sandhu, a student-athlete at the NBA Academy India, was also part of the medal-winning Punjab squad. He was one of three Indians (the only boy) selected to the Basketball Without Border Global Camp at the 2020 All-Star Weekend in Chicago.

New Delhi (IANS): India’s Harsimran Kaur has been invited to participate in a multi-week training camp from at The NBA Global Academy at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Canberra. This will be her second stint at the NBA Global Academy after attending a camp from November 7 - 24 which made her the first prospect from the NBA Academies Women’s Program and the first female prospect from outside of Australia to attend The NBA Global Academy.

The 16-year-old will travel to Canberra from Chicago after attending the sixth annual Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Global Camp.

Harsimran was named MVP at the third NBA Academies Women’s Program camp held in Mumbai last year.

The youth player from Punjab has represented India at multiple events, including the 3x3 Asian Championships held in Jakarta in August 2019.

Harsimran was also one of four Indian girls invited to the first Next Generation program at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Tampa this past April, competing against top USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team members. This was followed by her participation in Basketball Without Borders Asia in Tokyo the same summer.

Armed robbers decamp with 30 kg of gold in Ludhiana : In a daring heist, five

armed robbers on Monday decamped with 30 kg gold from the industrial city Ludhiana in Punjab within 20 minutes after tying staff members with a rope.

The stolen gold is worth Rs 12 crore [Rs 120 million].

The robbery was reported at India Infoline Finance Limited (IIFL) on the Gill Road around 11 a.m. The crime was recorded on CCTVs, police said.

The crime spot is located just opposite a Crime Investigation Agency’s office.

The IIFL staff raised an alarm when the robbers fled, Police Commissioner Rakesh Aggarwal told the media.

At the time of the incident, five employees were present in the office and no customer was there.

This is the second major robbery in Ludhiana in the past 20 days. On January 29, four armed assailants looted two kg of gold jewellery from V.K. Jewellers.

Driving without a licence: What happens if I forget to renew my driver’s licence and I am involved in a car accident?

BY STEVE FERGUSON Personal injury lawyer Simpson, Thomas & Associates THERE can be significant consequences for those caught driving without a licence in BC, including violation tickets, vehicle impoundment, and Driver Penalty Points. The consequences

of driving without a licence are even more severe if you are involved in a car accident, particularly a major accident that causes serious personal injury such as a traumatic brain injury, paraplegia or quadriplegia, or death.

Let’s examine some of the implications of driving without a licence in BC and how unlicensed driving factors

into an ICBC claim for personal injury compensation.

Driving without a licence is a breach of your ICBC insurance policy: A condition of all ICBC insurance policies is that the driver of the insured vehicle must be “authorized and qualified by law” to operate a vehicle. Whether you are driving without a licence because you accidentally missed the renewal date, did not have your driver’s licence properly reinstated after a suspension or prohibition, or did not have a driver’s licence in the first place (for example, by deliberate choice or because you are underage), you are in breach of the “authorized and qualified by law” condition. The implication of this breach is that ICBC can deny your entitlement to insurance coverage in the event of a car accident that causes property damage or personal injury.

Implications of driving without a licence in the event of a car accident: In BC, if you are driving without a licence or if you allow someone who is unlicensed to drive your vehicle, you can be held personally responsible for property damage and personal injury caused to other people in the event of an accident. If you were at fault for the accident, ICBC will attempt to deny you coverage, leaving you exposed to personal liability for damages. Compensation for the most serious accidents that cause permanent impairment, catastrophic injury or death can be valued in the multimillion-dollar range.

What happens if I am injured while driving without a licence?: If you are injured while driving without a licence and you caused the accident,

ICBC may attempt to deny your entitlement to Part 7 benefits (also known as no-fault benefits). However, you can still bring an ICBC claim against the driver and/or vehicle that caused the accident, regardless of your own policy breach or even complete lack of insurance. ICBC may attempt to deny your personal injury claim by arguing that you were wholly or partially at fault for the accident. These types of claims can be complicated, and the best course of action is to retain a lawyer early in your claim to protect your rights.

Lincoln Corsair: New small luxury SUV is a Potential Award Winner

By Autoreviewman I remember the Ford Corsair rom my youth in England, a pretty little sedan or coupe (Sometimes convertible) from 1960’s produced by the British arm of the Ford Motor Company. The car had a cool front end that looked like an American, 1960s Ford Thunderbird. But I digress. The 2020 Lincoln Corsair is the newest offering from Lincoln, a sharp looking luxury compact SUV set to replace the outgoing MKC and slotting in below the Lincoln Nautilus, Aviator and the full-size Navigator. Based on the Ford Escape underpinnings, Lincoln designer have done an excellent job of making the exterior look fresh with a nice bespoke look to the body. It looks expensive and jewel like. The intricate multi spoke wheels really set the Corsair off. The five-seater is a very handsome beast, with styling cues from the Aviator.

Lincoln is hoping the Corsair will appeal to young professionals who want to get into the Lincoln brand and prize good looks, utility, fuel efficiency, luxury and comfort. To that end Lincoln have made Interior fit and finish, very high end, with liberal sprinklings of chrome and gloss

black trim, is appropriately applied. With a high quality leather appointed trim, a lot of work has gone into making the Corsair as upmarket as possible.

Two engines are offered, both turbocharged four-cylinder units. The base 2.0 L produce 250 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, while an optional 2.3 L develops 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will use a new eight-speed automatic, hooked up to All-wheel drive as standard equipment biased to the front wheels The Corsair is big on technology, and includes “Phone as a Key,” an app that lets you use a compatible smartphone as a key fob to start the engine lock or unlock the doors, or operate the liftgate. The Corsair also offers Lincoln Co-Pilot360 Plus. Featuring such amenities as adaptive cruise control functions in stop-and-go traffic, speed limit signs scanning the capacity to slows down if the limit drops there is also steering assist if you can’t stop in time, and an auto brake feature if you’re about to back into something. There is also a fully autonomous self-parking feature.

Interior wise, the cabin is impressive, with softtouch materials and high-grade leather delivering luxurious opulence—it is really exceptional for the segment. There is a “floating” center stack, which looks really cool, and allows for more knee and legroom. The backseat provides ample room and can be moved forward or backward to increase legroom or cargo space.

rear seats slide fore and aft for legroom, and fold flat for more cargo space. Cool, blue ambient lighting on the passenger dash panel, the doors and foot wells also set off the interior.

On the road , the first thing that surprises you is the serene hushed ride, no doubt in part to the Corsair’s active noise control system with the dual-wall dashboard separating the engine and passenger compartments,. There are five selectable drive modes. Normal, Conserve, Excite, Slippery, and Deep Conditions. The Corsair is peppy to drive with stable, no drama handling.

It feels agile, yet not jittery with its firm, comfortable suspension. A high ride height, great visibility and a somewhat sporty ride make the everyday driving experience pleasant. Not a lot to complain about. It is priced well in base from, but options stay jacking the price up. A good alternative to the usual German and Japanese premium cohorts. 2020 Jaguar XE: This Cat Has More Than Nine Lives!

By Veeno Dewan A lithe, graceful car with striking, elegant lines, the Jaguar XE is a luxury compact sedan that looks simply fantastic. While others cars in this sector seem fussy, bloated and overdesigned, the XE is sinuous, athletic and toned. For 2020 the Jaguar XE receives a careful, measured revamp. It is not just cosmetic, the redesigned XE is now has an exceptional drag coefficient from 0.26 to 0.25. Just as important, Jaguar have spruced up the interior with higher grade materials and updated technology. Power is courtesy of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engine hooked up to an eight-speed automatic, teamed with All Wheel Drive.

Interior wise the upgrades include Jaguar’s optional 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and the twin screen “InControl Touch Pro Duo” in-

fotainment display. Jaguars cool rotary shifter in now gone and there is now a traditional “SportShift” gearshift. Also new is higher grade leather covering the dash, center console, and door panels with better raised stitching.

There are now just two well equipped XE models for Canada, the P250 and P300 R-Dynamic, - powered by either a 247- or 296-horsepower versions of the gasoline 2.0-litre four-cylinder

turbocharged Ingenium engine. We tested the P300 model dressed in superb black paint and with a tasteful black leather trimmed interior. Inside, the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system’s two screens allow you to use navigation in the top screen and also see other controls in the bottom screen. There are two touchscreen options— a standard eight-inch (In- Control Touch) and an optional 10.2-inch (In- Control Touch Pro) display screen. High quality aluminum and leather offer a tasteful contemporary looking look. The finish is excellent all round in the front and rear cabin. Front legroom is excellent, although the rear cabin is a tighter affair. . The rear features e 40:20:40 folding-seat option, but a rather smallish trunk.

The equipment levels are high with full power and creature comforts. Connectivity and in-

fotainment features include: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Navigation, 4G LTE Wi-Fi and a bevy of apps, live-info and remote-control features. Wireless charging, head-up display and camera-image rear-view mirror are available.

Standard driver aids include driver-drowsiness and rear-traffic monitoring, lane-keep assist, semi-autonomous park assist, auto high-beam assist and emergency braking. A Drive Pack option adds adaptive cruise, blind-spot assist and high-speed emergency braking . Every Jaguar is special and the XE is no exception.
