THE amazing feature at Glasgow, Scotland, capped months of diligent training and a singleminded push to display the very best at the pinnacle of competitive pipe band competition. Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band were named champions at the Worlds on August 17. The band emerged on the top for overall drumming as well as best parade. This is the second time the Malaysian band took part in the world series organized by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. When asked why they decided to make the trip to the World Championships Drum Sergeant Tripert Singh said: “It is because we wanted to give the youth of Malaysia the opportunity to dream, and achieve those dreams. It was to show the world that Malaysia too, has world class musicians.” Up to 8,000 pipers and drummers from 195 bands converged at the Glasgow Green on August 16 and
17 for the championship. The bands were from 13 countries: New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, United States, Belgium, England, Spain, Malaysia, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Sri Dasmesh – named after the tenth Guru of the Sikhs and the only Sikh pipe band at the event, was formed in 1986 by brothers Sukdev Singh and Harvinder Singh. It was
started as a youth development program providing the youth with a healthy platform to be involved in. The passion project initially aimed to develop the leadership skills of the Sikh youth, progressed professionally into the pipe band scene, and today have made their mark on the world stage. The World Championship winning band was led by Pipe Major Tirath Singh (age 22),
Drum Sergeant Tripert Singh (age 25) and Mid-Section Head Sukhpreet Kaur (age 22). Tirath Singh and Tripert Singh are brothers who work for Malaysia Airlines as pilots. Sukhpreet is an amazing young professional currently completing her degree in Mechanical Engineering at Herriot Watt University. Together, they led the band through 13 months of tireless practice. They met three times a week for two hours or more each session at the Sri Dasmesh International School. Tripert and Tirath say that this is the band’s gift to the country for their Independence Day and hope that all Malaysians, especially the Sikh community, will hold their heads high in pride because Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band raised the Malaysian flag in Scotland as champions beating the best of the best and by bringing home the silverware.
New Delhi (IANS): The government is in the process of preparing a list of Jammu and Kashmir politicians to be released as they are under “preventive detention” in the erstwhile state since abrogation of Article 370, said sources. The move will be implemented in a phased manner and around 200 politicians as well as activists are likely to be released in the first phase in September, said a source. “The names are under consideration and a decision will be taken soon,” the source said requesting anonymity.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has engaged its officials under close coordination with Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Additional Secretary (J&K Division) Gyanesh Kumar. The process started after a Central team comprising intelligence officials, including Intelligence Bureau Chief Arvind Kumar, returned from the state last week after meeting former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti in the state. Both Abdullah and Mehbooba are under detention since Centre’s August 5 announcement of
scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution which gave special status to the erstwhile state. Sources said the team comprising senior Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officials have sent a report to the Home Ministry after their meeting with Jammu and Kashmir leaders in the Valley. The Central team had camped in Srinagar for two days and returned on August 23. As the special team largely focused on discussion over easing the return of the leaders back into
the Valley, the Ministry is planning how many leaders should be released in the first phase and whom to be released first, said the source. While Omar Abdullah is in Hari Niwas Palace, Mehbooba Mufti has been put up in Chashme Shahi. It is learnt that the leaders after their release from preventive detention might not be allowed to organize any public rally. The leaders are learnt to be allowed only to meet their relatives, political leaders and people in their areas, said the source.
