Trudeau snubs Surrey again; 4 South Asians in cabinet; Chrystia Freeland is Deputy Prime Minister

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau once again snubbed Surrey, BC’s second largest city, and its South Asians in particular: no MP from Surrey made it to cabinet.

The NDP and the Conservatives will now have a field day highlighting how such an important city and its multicultural population are being treated. It will be a good opportunity for them to try and win the three remaining Liberal ridings in the next election that could take place within two years.

The Liberals had won three seats in Surrey: * Ken Hardie from Fleetwood— Port Kells * Randeep Sarai from Surrey Centre * Sukh Dhaliwal from Surrey-

There were four South Asian ministers in Trudeau’s 2015 cabinet also: Sajjan, Bains, Chagger and Alberta’s Amarjeet Sohi, who was appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Communities but lost his seat in the 2019 election.

SURREY RCMP on Tuesday sent a stern warning to South Asian youths – both local ones and international students – that violence, vandalism and any other violations of the law – would not be tolerated and they would pursue the guilty parties and take appropriate action.

Police have been actively engaged in this issue since March, investigating 50 individuals connected to these groups, and working with business and property managers to improve area safety. This investigation has also resulted in three deportations.

While not all of these incidents in Newton that have gone viral on social media over the past year involve international students, law enforcement officials want to remind individuals who are visiting Canada on a visa that any engagement in criminal activity violates the condition of their visa and they could be removed from Canada as a result.

The first video was of a fight which took place in the parking lot of a strip mall in Strawberry Hills in mid-August, and the second video was of an assault with a weapon and mischief which occurred in another parking lot during the early morning

On August 31, at 9 p.m., Surrey RCMP Traffic Enforcement Team members conducted a traffic stop with a party bus. The bus was found to have 40 intoxicated youth passengers, all aged between 15 and 18 years old. Officers also located open liquor with youth inside the bus.

The driver of the bus received multiple violation tickets related to the bus being operated over the 35-person capacity, having open liquor in a vehicle, and not holding a chauffeur’s license.

Police and Bylaw Enforcement conducted follow up with the owner of the party bus, reviewing the expec-

tations of compliance with the Motor Vehicle Act and Liquor Control and Licensing Act. The Surrey RCMP Diversity and Indigenous Peoples Unit is also engaging with local international student associations with the goal of providing education and prevention information to students to ensure they stay safe during their time in Canada.

ANITA ANAND Oakville Born and raised in rural Nova Scotia, Anita moved to Ontario in 1985. She and her husband John chose Oakville to raise their four children, and they have called our town home for 16 years.

In the community, Anita serves on the Board of Directors of the Lighthouse for Grieving Children and has previously served on the boards of the Oakville Hospital Foundation and Oakville Hydro.

Anita Anand is a scholar, lawyer, researcher and mother of four.

Anita currently works as a Professor of Law at the University of Toronto. She holds the J.R. Kimber Chair in Investor Protection and Corporate Governance at the University of Toronto, is a Senior Fellow and member of the Governing Board of Massey College, and is the Director of Policy and Research at the Capital Markets Research Institute. She has taught law at Western University, Yale Law School and Queen’s University.

Anita has done extensive research on corporate governance and shareholder rights and appears regularly in the media to discuss these topics.

Navdeep Bains has served the people of Mississauga—Malton since 2015, and a Member of Parliament since 2004.

He was the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. He was a distinguished visiting professor at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School and worked for several years in accounting and financial analysis for the Ford Motor Company of Canada.

Navdeep has been a longtime resident of both Mississauga and Brampton, and has strong ties to the social and cultural associations of Mississauga— Malton. Navdeep has been active in a variety of community organizations, as a board member for the Mississauga Food Bank, having worked with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Guru Gobind Singh Children’s Foundation, as well as having served as an Ontario board member with the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

He is also the recipient of a number of awards recognizing his work in promoting diversity within his community, and holds an MBA with a specialization in Finance.

Angela Arora of Surrey named to Junior Squad by Golf Canada GOLF Canada in Oakville, Ontario, on Monday announced the names of the 18 athletes, male and female, who have been selected to repre-

sent Team Canada as part of the 2020 National Amateur and Junior Squads.

Possible murder-suicide in Surrey as two dead people found in home SHORTLY before 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, frontline officers with Surrey RCMP attended a residence in the 14000-block of 102A Avenue, where they located two dead persons, and subsequently called in the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

“Although our investigation is in its early stages, at this time it appears as though one of the deceased was the victim of a homicide. We are working hard to gather evidence to identify the events surrounding this tragedy,” said IHIT Constable Harrison Mohr.

Initial indications are that this was an isolated incident with no risk to the public.

“We are not looking for any outstanding suspects, and can confirm that both persons knew each other,” Mohr added.

That usually implies that after murdering a person, the suspect committed suicide.

Officers from IHIT, along with the Victim Services unit from the Surrey RCMP are in the process of reaching out to the family and friends of the people involved.

Police said they will be offering their support to them, and seeking any information they can provide.

IHIT may be in the area for several days, as officers continue to process evidence and conduct a thorough examination of the scene.

Barings of Langley awarded nearly $3 million as blueberries were ruined by herbicide Judge says previous owners Zora and Harminder Grewal “acted together, pursuant to a joint plan” ZORA and Harminder Grewal, who owned a blueberry farm in Langley owed money to Farm Credit Canada which held a mortgage over the farm. According to a decision

by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Gomery, in 2016, the mortgage was in default and the farm was under foreclosure. In late June of 2017, the FCC obtained an order authorizing a sale of the farm to the plaintiffs for $5.531 million.

Following an unsuccessful appeal by the Grewals, Malkiat and Satwant Baring acquired the farm on July 17, 2017.

While all this was happening, the blueberry bushes were laden with ripening fruit that the plaintiffs planned to harvest and sell immediately. In 2017, it was well-established.

Most of the blueberry bushes were mature and productive.

The farm could be expected to generate net revenues from the sale of blueberries exceeding $200,000 per year, according to the court decision.

Shortly before the plaintiffs bought the farm, somebody sprayed herbicides over most of the fields. The blueberry bushes were ruined. The ripe blueberries were rendered unfit for human consumption.

When the Barings arrived to take possession of the farm, the damage was immediately apparent. Leaves were yellowing and plants were dying.

The Barings maintained that the Grewals sprayed the herbicides. The Grewals denied that they did it and at the conclusion of the Barings’ case, they collectively elected not to call evidence and moved for judgment on the ground that

the evidence is insufficient to make out the Grewals’ case, according to the court decision.

On July 11, 2017, the blueberry fields were inspected by outside experts to resolve a dispute as to whether the berries were so ripe as to require immediate harvesting. There was no sign of damage to the bushes at that time.

By July 17, 2017, damage to the blueberry bushes was widespread and readily apparent. The defendants admitted that the damage was done by the application of two herbicides, 2,4-D and glyphosate (commonly sold under the trade-name, “Roundup”).

The judge noted: “It is clear from the damage that the herbicides were applied directly to the plants throughout the fields. This is not a case of indirect windborne exposure to herbicides sprayed for some proper purpose. The spraying was wilful and malicious.”

“It required the culprits to mix herbicide concentrates with water. They had to spray about 15,000 litres of this mixture onto the plants from an air blast sprayer towed by a tractor driving up and down the rows of blueberry bushes.

The farm is large enough that it commonly takes about ten hours to spray the fields. In this case, the spraying was erratic and the culprits may have done the job a little more quickly, but there is no question that hours of work, specialized knowledge, materials, and equipment were required,” the judge pointed out.

Ion his analysis, the judge

said: “Who sprayed the herbicides on the blueberry fields?

The timing and circumstances of the spraying point in the direction of Zora and Harminder Grewal. They had access to the tractor and sprayer used for the spraying that they admit they carried out on July 13, 2017. They were the only people who had assured access on the Farm to the large quantities of water required for extensive spraying.”

Regarding “motive,” the judge noted: “Harminder Grewal told Mrs. Baring about the dispute among the Grewal brothers. He told her that the Barings should not get involved in that dispute. He said that it is bad to get involved in somebody else’s dispute. He told them that rich people had looked at this property and shied away. He told them that they should do the same. If this was not a threat, it was at the least a warning. Harminder Grewal must have viewed it as a significant warning.”

He added: “While the Barings were not persuaded that they should walk away, the importance of the conversation lies in what it tells us about Harminder Grewal’s state of mind. He wanted to avoid losing the Farm. He was not confident in his legal position and was thinking outside the framework of legal remedies.

He wanted to send a personal message. He wanted the Barings to know that, if they did not withdraw, they would be involved in a personal dispute among the Grewal brothers.

“It is plausible that, on July 13 and 14, 2017, Harminder Grewal wished to punish the

Dave Hayer on 21st commemoration of his father Tara Singh Hayer’s assassination FORMER MLA Dave Hayer, in a statement on behalf of Tara Singh Hayer’s family and relatives, said that his father Tara Singh Hayer (November 15, 1936 – November 18, 1998), who was editor and publisher of the Indo-Canadian Times newspaper and was assassinated in

Surrey on November 18,1998 after reporting about terrorism, was recognized by numerous local, provincial, national and international awards.

Some of those awards include: The Order of British Columbia, the Journalist Award by the

Municipality of Surrey for courageous and outstanding contribution to Punjabi Journalism in Canada, the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canada, the International Award of Distinction for Journalism from the International Association of Punjabi Authors and Artists, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

In 1999, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression renamed its Press Freedom Award the “Tara Singh Hayer Press Freedom Award” in Hayer’s honour. Each year, the award is given to a Canadian journalist who, through his or her work, has made an important contribution to reinforcing and promoting the principle of freedom of the press in Canada or elsewhere.

In 2000 Tara Singh Hayer’s name was added to the Canadian News Hall of Fame. He was the first Canadian of non-English, non-French origin to be added to the Hall. In 2000, Hayer was also selected as one of the International Press Institute’s 50 World Press Freedom Heroes of the past 50 years.

SURREY RCMP Serious Crime Unit is investigating a shooting that occurred overnight in the Guildford area. On Thursday, November 21 at 9 p.m., police responded to a report of gunshots heard, and a vehicle collision in the 14600-block of 83rd Avenue.

Frontline officers located the vehicle which had collided with a fence, and found a man with an apparent gunshot wound. The man was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

This investigation is in its early stages; however, police believe this to be a targeted incident. There is no indication of a continued risk to the public in relation to this incident.

AT approximately 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, members of the New Westminster Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the 200-block of Osborne Avenue. The suspect fled the area before police arrived. Officers determined shots had been fired in what appears to be a targeted, isolated event.

“Investigators are speaking with witnesses and other parties who may be involved,” said Sgt. Josh Hooker. “Because we are still in the early stages of the investigation, detectives are working hard to determine what exactly happened. The New Westminster Police Department will provide further updates when more details are available.”

Male shot in targeted incident in Langley LANGLEY RCMP say that a male was shot at a residence in the 26900-block of 48th Avenue on Thursday morning.

Police were called just before 6 a.m. to the area and a 47-year-old male was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Lower Mainland Police Dog Services and the Emergency Response Team were called to assist with the investigation.

More than new ministers, Liberals need to change who they’re working for: Singh FEDERAL NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Wednesday responded to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new cabinet by reminding him that no matter who is assigned to a particular file, the real change needed is for the Liberal government to start working for Canadians.

This program is the result of a series of community dialogues led by Ravi Kahlon, former parliamentary secretary for sport and multiculturalism, in July and August. The meetings explored issues and experiences around racism and hate, and asked community leaders for advice about how government can help build a safer, more inclusive province. High-risk sex offender to reside in Vancouver THE Vancouver Police Department announced on Thursday that it believes compelling circumstances exist to warn the public about a high-risk sexual offender, Brian Abrosimo, who is now living in Vancouver.

Abrosimo, 57, is a two-time federal offender serving a 14year, four-month sentence for sexual assault, kidnapping, unlawful confinement, assault with a weapon, sexual assault with a weapon, and forcible confinement.

His sentence started in June 2006 and a 10-year Long Term Supervision Order will start when his custodial sen-

tence ends in October 2020.

Abrosimo poses a risk of significant harm to the safety of adolescent and adult women, including strangers, and acquaintances.

Abrosimo is white, 5’10”

and 240 pounds, with grey shaved hair, hazel eyes, a grey moustache and a goatee.

He will be bound by the terms of his statutory release, which include the following conditions: * Not to consume, purchase alcohol; * Not to consume, purchase or possess drugs other than prescribed medication and over the counter drugs taken as recommended by the manufacturer; * Not to associate with any person known to be involved in criminal activity and/or substance misuse;

SURREY RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a man that is alleged to have groped staff at a business in the Guildford area.

On Friday, September 15, staff of a business in the 10300-block of 152nd Street reported that a colleague had been groped and kissed by a male customer. The man then made inappropriate comments towards her before leaving the business.

The man is described as a 50-60-yearold South Asian male with a long beard, wearing an orange turban “These incidents can have a profound impact on the victims and their loved ones,” said Constable Richard Wright.

“Police are asking for help to identify this suspect to further the investigation and to bring a measure of closure to the victim.”

Statement on the 21st Commemoration of the assassination of newspaper editor and publisher Tara Singh Hayer TARA Singh Hayer (Nov. 15, 1936 – November 18, 1998) was an Indo-Canadian Times newspaper editor & publisher, who was assassinated in Surrey Canada on November 18,1998 after reporting about terrorism, he was recognized with hundreds local, provincial, national and international awards.

Some of those awards include: The Order of British Columbia, the Journalist Award by the Municipality of Surrey for courageous and outstanding contribution to Punjabi Journalism in Canada, the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canada, the International Award of Distinction for Journalism from the International Association of Punjabi Authors and Artists, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

In 1999, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression renamed its Press Freedom Award the “Tara Singh Hayer Press Freedom Award” in Hayer’s honour.

Each year, the award is given to a Canadian journalist who, through his or her work, has made an important contribution to reinforcing and promoting the principle of freedom of the press in Canada or elsewhere.

In 2000 Tara Singh Hayer’s name was added to the Canadian News Hall of Fame. He was the

first Canadian of non-English, non-French origin to be added to the Hall. In 2000, Hayer was also selected as one of the International Press Institute’s 50 World Press Freedom Heroes of the past 50 years. One of the presenters of the Award for Late Tara Singh Hayer as “World Press Freedom Hero” in May 2000 was USA Senator Ted Kennedy in Boston, USA and Award was accepted by Dave Hayer & Isabelle Martinez Hayer on behalf of the Hayer family.

On Monday, November 18th we commemorate Tara Singh Hayer, my father’s message of freedom of expression and freedom of speech, his message against hate, violence, extremism and terrorism.

My father’s life was devoted to democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press to speak out against those who try to prevent those freedoms, the right that we in Canadian society hold so precious, to live and speak without fear.

He believed in leading by example, and even though he knew he was putting his life in danger, he had the courage to not only speak out about his own beliefs but also speak out for victims and the innocent.

My father believed that it was not right to remain quiet while some individuals worked against

our freedoms, because then they would win … and we must never let those who promote hatred, extremism, violence and terrorism succeed.

Fear is what drives terrorism around the world, but we must stand united against that, and fight back peacefully as my father did through his newspaper and through his words. And we must have the courage, as he did, to keep talking about, and keep fighting for our freedoms and our rights.

As a result of my father’s teachings, and his example of standing up for others, I and all of my family will continue the fight for the rights of victims, for the rights of families of victims & for the rights of all law-abiding Canadians. We will continue to do all we can to ensure that the rights of victims, and our rights as law-abiding Canadian Citizen’s, are stronger than the rights of those who commit crimes against us.

All of us must work long and

hard to ensure that Canadian Laws protect the rights of victims, rights of the victims’ families and the rights of all innocent individuals The rights of all law-abiding Canadians must be stronger than the rights of those who commit criminal acts. Our justice system must recognize that.

Too often our courts and judges allow the rights of criminals to triumph, to supersede the rights of innocent victims, and as a result there is little redress or closure for the victims.

We must, as my father often said, and our community members tell me, close the revolving door of our courts that allow criminals to essentially walk free, while victims and their families continue to suffer, grieve and be held hostage to the “rights” of the criminal.

I would like everyone to remember my father as a voice for freedom, democracy and for the courage that supported him to speak out against the terrorism that resulted in the deaths of 331 innocent people, over 268 Canadians & 86 children were killed in Air India bombings.

Premier Horgan needs to act on transit strike: B.C. Liberals WITH a million Metro Vancouver commuters facing a full-blown transit strike, BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson and MLA John Martin, the BC Liberal Labour Critic, are calling for the NDP to appoint a mediator to step in and resolve the crisis.

“Hundreds of thousands of

commuters in Metro Vancouver have been dragged into this transit strike heading into its third week while John Horgan and the NDP have irresponsibly sat idly by,” said Wilkinson. “The Premier has the power to help end this strike by appointing a mediator to get both parties back to the ta-

ble. Now that a system-wide shutdown is planned for next week why won’t John Horgan finally do something?”

Earlier today the union confirmed plans for a full system-wide shutdown from November 27 to 29 which will wreak havoc on commuters throughout Metro

Vancouver.

“Horgan and his Labour minister have sat on their hands for 20 days now. During the last transit strike, a mediator was appointed after just 11 days. Vancouver commuters deserve leadership and a swift response from their government,” added Martin.

Since the last transit strike which took place under the NDP 18 years ago, the system has expanded with 58 additional bus routes, 520 additional busses, 1,400 additional bus operators, and an increase in annual ridership by 206 million.

“An efficient and reliable transit system is essential to

people’s livelihoods. Their daily lives are being disrupted as a direct result of John Horgan’s inaction,” said Wilkinson. “It is time to appoint a mediator and bring everyone back to the negotiating table. Metro Vancouver residents deserve better.”

“Community Benefits Agreements are nothing more than a taxpayer-funded payback to a small group of unions handpicked by John Horgan and the NDP,” said Wilkinson. “Contractors and union members from across the province have shown up here today seeking answers from John Horgan and the NDP as to why they are being prevented from working on public infrastructure projects and he owes them an answer.”

An analysis by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) shows that CBAs could add as much as $4.8 billion more to the cost of public infrastructure projects, which equates to nearly $4,000 for every fam-

ily in the province.

“John Horgan’s CBA scheme has already cost British Columbians over $200 million in project overruns as construction costs on public projects continue to skyrocket,” added Martin. “The BC Liberals stand with the thousands of workers cut out of government projects as well as all British Columbians who are now seeing their tax dollars funnelled into the coffers of NDP union donors.”

The Illicillewaet and Kicking Horse Canyon highway expansions have seen cost overruns of 143 per cent and 33 per cent respectively, costing taxpayers $200 million more than when the projects were first an-

nounced by the BC Liberals. The NDP have also estimated that under their CBA scheme, the Pattullo Bridge expansion will cost a minimum of $100 million additional taxpayer dollars.

“Under CBAs, 85 per cent of British Columbia’s construction workforce is excluded from working on public projects. We believe that no British Columbian should be prevented from working in their own province just because their union doesn’t donate to the NDP,” said Wilkinson. “We are proud to stand with these workers today and demand that John Horgan start to look after everyone in this province, not just his friends and union insiders.”

THE BC Teachers’ Federation have launched a new province-wide radio ad exposing the consequences of the provincial government’s failure to address recruitment and retention problems. A social media version of the ad is available on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

BCTF President Teri Mooring said on Wednesday the ad highlights the unacceptable practice of children with special needs being sent home when there aren’t teachers to support them as well as the unprecedented number of uncertified and unqualified adults currently teaching in BC schools. Mooring said teachers’ low wages pose one of the biggest challenges to recruitment efforts.

“BC has the second lowest starting salary for teachers in the entire country and the lowest salary for experienced teachers west of Quebec,” said Mooring. “With BC’s high cost of living, school districts have a very tough time convincing teachers from Ontario or the Prairies to move west when they’re going to

Mooring, a teacher originally from Quesnel, explained that the shortage has been a problem in rural and northern communities for many years, though it has worsened dramatically in the last couple of years, and has now arrived in the Fraser Valley, the Lower Mainland, and on Vancouver Island.

“It used to be that rural districts had a hard time filling positions in remote locations or for specialized positions like French immersion, music or technical education, but now it’s classroom teachers, counsellors, and other specialists all over the province. As of November 18, there are still close to 400 teaching jobs open across BC. Every one of those unfilled positions represents students not getting support or access to specialists.

The problem is also growing rapidly in BC’s francophone school district.”

Mooring said the consequence of the growing shortage is something called “failure to fill.” In some cases, jobs are simply left vacant. In other cases, there are not enough oncall teachers to cover off sick days. That “failure to fill” means some teachers like special education teachers or resource teachers are pulled away from their work with students to cover a vacancy in a classroom. The students that teacher works with then lose out on their important support. In some cases, students with special needs end up getting sent home.

A parent group called BCEdAccess has been collecting parents’ reports of their children with special needs being sent home. You can read their report from 2018–19 here. One of the main reasons for this unacceptable practice is teachers being pulled away from their work because of the shortage and failure to fill vacancies.

“All parents should be very concerned about the teacher shortage as all students are impacted when needed supports for students are not available,” said Mooring. “BC now has an unprecedented number of people in classrooms who are not trained teachers.

That’s unacceptable. We wouldn’t stand for it in any other profession and parents should be concerned.”

Body found in burnt-out vehicle in Abbotsford ON Friday night at 10:34 p.m., Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the 5300 block of Bates Road.

Firefighters located an SUV-type vehicle that was fully engulfed in fire. When the fire was extinguished, a burned body was located inside.

The incident is being treated as suspicious.

The Abbotsford Police Major Crime Unit were to transition this investigation over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

Legislation to bring transparency to fuel industry, gasoline prices OIL and gas companies in British Columbia will be forced to reveal to consumers how gas prices are set, as a result of new legislation that was introduced on Monday, November 18.

The fuel price transparency act will allow the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) to collect information from oil and gas companies on the market conditions involved in setting gasoline prices. This information will be made available to the public, as well as consumer and watchdog groups.

“It’s incredibly frustrating to watch the price of gas shoot up for no reason, and British Columbians are tired of feeling ripped off whenever they fill up their vehicles,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology. “This legislation sends a message to oil and gas companies: the days of setting your prices in total secrecy

The act was developed in response to the BCUC investigation that found a lack of competition and substantial markups in the province’s gasoline market, including a 10- to 13-cent-per-litre premium being charged to drivers that industry was unable to explain during the BCUC inquiry. This unexplained premium results in British Columbians paying an extra $490 million every

year.

This act will require companies to share data on refined fuel imports and exports, fuel volumes at refineries and terminals, as well as wholesale and retail prices. It also has safeguards in place to ensure that the information provided by the companies is complete, accurate and reported regularly.

“By pulling back the curtain, these companies will be publicly accountable for unfair markups and cost increases that cannot be explained,” Ralston said. “It will also produce a common set of facts moving forward, allowing us to properly evaluate other policy measures to bring fairness to the price at the pump.”

When Premier John Horgan raised concerns about gouging in April, BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson accused him of “making up these demons.” (CKNW, April 25) And last week, Wilkinson still

refused to acknowledge pricegouging despite a BCUC report confirming the oil companies couldn’t account for 13 cents/ litre. That adds up to an extra $490 million at the pump for BC drivers every year.

Bruce Ralston, Minister of Jobs, Trade, and Technology, said: “It’s disappointing that the first reaction from Andrew Wilkinson’s BC Liberals is about protecting big oil and not about the $490 million that is taken every year from people across British Columbia. When given the choice between protecting people’s wallets and protecting oil companies, the BC Liberals are still putting their wealthy friends first.”

fidential information collected on the gasoline and diesel market to be made public, if the public benefit from the release of that information outweighs the harm to the business interests of fuel companies.

The release of information under the FPTA will encourage the competitiveness of the market in British Columbia and give the public confidence that the market is working fairly.

Officers honoured for valour, commitment to public safety

AT the 38th annual Police Honours Night at Government House on Thursday, 114 law enforcement members were recognized for their bravery and dedication.

Police officers from around the province put their lives on the line to ensure British Columbians from all walks of life are safe.

“It takes a special kind of person to serve in law enforcement, those who know the dangers and challenges of their profession but remain committed to serve with pride and never shy away from their duty,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Tonight’s honourees are examples of that commitment in action and on behalf of all British Columbians, we thank officers just like them all across the province for their immeasurable contributions to public safety.”

Lt. Gov. Janet Austin and Farnworth presented awards to officers of all ranks from municipal departments and the RCMP for their bravery in life-saving incidents, their devotion above and beyond the call of duty and their work to make B.C.’s communities safer. Some of this year’s recipients included: * a constable from Delta who, while off duty, intervened and apprehended a male who was stabbing a female with a large kitchen knife. * an investigative team that spent 20 months in a gruelling investigation to remove international drug traffickers from the streets; * officers from Nanaimo who enlisted bystanders to help lift a motor vehicle and extract a woman being asphyxiated under the engine block; * members from North Cowichan / Duncan who rescued a woman trapped in a car hanging off a riverbank; * an officer from Vancouver who, while off duty, pursued and apprehended an armed male who had broken into her residence; * a member from Abbotsford who, while off duty, traversed 76 metres (250 feet) down a steep embankment to give first aid to an injured motorcyclist; and * officers from Oceanside whose persistent pursuit through dense bush ensured the arrest of a prolific offender.

“Those recognized tonight have demonstrated exemplary courage and conviction,” Austin said. “It is an honour to hear the stories of these brave men and women, who serve British Columbians often at the risk of their own lives. We thank them for their service and acknowledge all who support them to do such impactful work for the province.”

In all, 30 officers received the award of valour, the highest award for a police officer in B.C. These officers exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect others from harm.

In addition, 84 officers were feted with honours for meritorious service, recognizing exemplary performance that answered the call to service in exceptional ways.

A forum on Tuesday at Surrey’s Grand Taj Banquet Hall condemned incidents of violence allegedly caused by international students and other youth and highlighted the need for the City of Surrey to have its own municipal police force.

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum bluntly pointed out that his slate was elected on a promise to replace the RCMP with a Surrey Police Force, yet three councillors who had been elected broke away once they got elected.

He made it clear that violence would not be tolerated in his City and those international students who broke the law would be kicked out of Canada.

Councillors Doug Elford, Laurie Guerra, Allison Patton, and Mandeep Nagra, who were all present at the forum, however, have continued to support transitioning to a municipal police force.

Councillor Jack Hundial also attended the forum.

Abbotsford Police seeking witnesses to arson attempt ON Monday, November 18, at approximately 10:41 p.m., Abbotsford Police patrol officers were called to the 33800-block of Mayfair Avenue for a report of two males pouring gasoline on a vehicle parked in a residential driveway. The suspects lit the vehicle on fire; however, it was extinguished upon police arrival.

A red Nissan Sentra was seen fleeing the neighbourhood.

Shortly after this arson attempt, Abbotsford Police received a report of an explosion and vehicle on fire on King Road, near Bradner Road. Patrol officers located a stolen, burnt vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle from the Mayfair Avenue arson attempt.

Investigators are in the preliminary stages of the investigation; however, neither fire appears to have been a random event.

The Abbotsford Police are seeking witnesses to these incidents. Anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of these events, or who was in the areas of Mayfair Avenue between 10 and 10:45 p.m. on November 18, or King Road near Bradner Road between 10:45 and 11:45 p.m. on the same day, is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or text 222973 (abbypd). BC Liquor Stores: Spread holiday cheer by sharing a bear

BC Liquor Stores is marking the 31st anniversary of its annual Share-a-Bear campaign, once again inviting customers to support a good cause.

From now until the end of December, customers can purchase a pair of stuffed bears for $11.70 plus tax – one to take home and a twin that will be donated to a local shelter, hospital or other charity in the same community.

More than 670,000 stuffed bears have been given to charities throughout the province since the program began.

“BC Liquor Stores teams are proud to have distributed more than 22,000 donated bears last year,” said Jonathan Castaneto, Director, Store Operations, BC Liquor Stores. “They brought smiles to the faces of needy children all over the province.”

This year’s bears come in black and tan, each wearing a plaid bowtie and imprinted with a maple leaf on their paw. Customers also have the chance to enter a draw to win a larger version of the Sharea-Bear, as two winners will be drawn at each of the 197 BC Liquor Stores.

Employees at each BC Liquor Store choose the groups and charities to support, to demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility in the communities they serve around the province.

Quick Facts: * More than 46,000 bears have been distributed to 197 BC Liquor Stores for this year’s campaign, and more than half will be donated (many customers donate both bears). * The program supports local charities, including Christmas stocking funds, hospitals, police and ambulance services, and other community support groups.
