the security team feared that the situation could turn ugly and wanted to avoid a situation like the one that occurred last September in London, Ontario, where a man pelted Trudeau with gravel at a campaign stop.

The Canadian Press reported that Trudeau spoke to the gathering

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau’s security team decided to cancel his in-person appearance at a fundraiser dinner organized by mainly South Asian supporters at Surrey’s Aria Banquet Hall on Tuesday evening as the number of hostile protestors outside the venue kept increasing steadily.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Vanessa Munn, Media Relations Officer, told The VOICE on Wednesday: “At approximately 4:40 p.m. [on Tuesday] there was a small group of protestors outside of the banquet hall gates.

The number of protestors continued to grow in size and included with the protest were several cars, larger trucks, and vehicles towing trailers that were travelling in a convoy style

province, with only Vancouver and Victoria having larger municipal agencies. The current SPS officer number also makes the service the sixth largest in BC when all municipal departments and RCMP detachments are considered.

SPS recently closed its second application pool for new recruits, with 409 applications received.

The SPS recruiting team will now review all applications and begin testing for qualified applicants in order to fill 13 spots for the fall 2022 class at the Justice Institute of BC Police Academy. SPS also

These officers bring a wealth of experience from their previous agencies, and a desire to contribute to the historic creation of a brand-new police service for one of Canada’s most diverse cities.

ABBOTSFORD Police announced on Tuesday that 23-year-old Anureet Dosanjh of Surrey has now been charged with six counts of impaired operation causing bodily harm and three counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm in connection to the May 24 crash between two cars in Abbotsford.

“Throughout the past year, investigators from the AbbyPD [Abbotsford Police Department] General Investigation Section (GIS) have tirelessly followed the evidence

advancing this file to the chargeapproval stage,” police said.

“From the onset, the General Investigation Section was grateful for the assistance from the public, which included witnesses and businesses in the area, allowing this investigation to advance. The investigative team remains dedicated to holding those responsible accountable,” said Sgt. Chris Brown-John.

No further information will be released as this matter is now before the courts, police said.

According to last year’s press release, on May 24, 2021, at 8:13 p.m., Abbotsford Emergency Services was called to Whatcom Road and North Parallel Road for a serious crash involving a Volkswagen Jetta and a Honda Civic.

The Honda Civic was traveling westbound on North Parallel at a high rate of speed when it veered into the oncoming lane and collided head on with the Volkswagen Jetta.

The Honda was occupied by the driver and a passenger, and the

Kannada speech by Canadian MP Chandra Arya goes viral in India Bengaluru, India (IANS): The video of a speech in Kannada — spoken mainly by the people of the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka — by Canadian parliamentarian Chandra Arya in Canada’s House of Commons has gone viral on the social media. The gesture of love for his mother tongue is being appreciated all over the country.

Arya wrote on Twitter: “I spoke in my mother tongue (first language) Kannada in Canadian parliament.

This beautiful language has long history and is spoken by about 50 million people. This is the first time Kannada

is spoken in any parliament in the world outside of India.”

Arya addressed the Canadian parliament: “Respected chairperson, I am happy that I got an opportunity to ad-

dress the Canada parliament in my mother tongue. It is a matter of pride for 5 crore [50 million] people of Karnataka that a person from the village Dwalalu in Sira taluk of Tumakuru district has been elected as the member of Parliament in Canada and addressing the house in his language.

“In 2018, Kannadigas of Canada have celebrated the Kannada Rajyotsava Day in the parliament. I will end my address with the lines of a song written by Rashtrakavi Kuvempu and sung by late Kannada cinema legend Dr Rajkumar, ‘no matter wherever you are, be a Kannadiga’. Thank you

Muslim organizations slam racist fans who targeted Arab-MuslimCanadian NHL player Nazem Kadri OVER the long weekend, while Canadian families from across the country tuned into NHL playoffs, Arab-Muslim-Canadian Colorado Avalanche player, Nazem Kadri, and his family were the subject of �ierce anti-Arab-racist and Islamophobic social media posts and death threats, after he was involved in a collision at a game on Saturday night that left another player out for the rest of the series.

The Canadian Arab Institute (CAI) and the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) on Thursday unreservedly condemned the anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia targeting Kadri and his family. CAI and NCCM called on the NHL to amend their Fan Code of Conduct to ban fans who direct death threats and racist slurs towards players and their families.

Some Twitter posts called Kadri an "Arab scum" and a “towel head”.

On Instagram, Kadri received hate mail from people calling him a “stupid Arab” and a “f***ing immigrant” who “should’ve never came to America.” Other posts, which have been deleted, included death threats. Kadri was also subject to Islamophobic attacks, insinuating that he is a terrorist.

Kadri, who was born in London, Ontario, and is of Lebanese descent, acknowledged that he has been dealing with racial slurs for much of his life, the NCCM said in a press statement.

“Kadri is not alone in his �ight against racism. Time and time again, we see racialized players experiencing double the consequences and hate when incidents in the game happen.

Last month, we celebrated Kadri, as his story and resilience has inspired thousands of racialized youth across the country to get on the ice. Today, we are condemning the attacks he is facing for being Arab and Muslim on the ice. Representation matters, but it must also be accompanied with support mechanisms to combat racism because these online threats translate to of�line violence – 66% of hate crimes reported by ArabCanadians last year were violent.”

We hope for a future in hockey where young Arabs, Muslims, and other racialized youth in Canada, can dream to play in the NHL, without fearing for their safety due to their identity. “I know that they’re booing me and what-not, but that’s what being a fan is,” Kadri said. “As a home team and a home player, you want the fans on your side and heckling the other team, as long as it’s within the guidelines. I’ve got no issues

with that and I know what was said isn’t a re�lection on every single fan in St. Louis. I understand that and I want to make that clear. But for those that wasted their time sending messages like that, I feel sorry for them,” he was quoted as saying by espn.com.au.

Kadri also told the media: "People need to be aware that this stuff still happens and that it's hurtful. A lot of people don't have to deal with that and they might not understand what it's like to deal with that, but people are trying.

I just try to provide for my team.

I try to put all of that aside. I just worry about some kids that aren't as mentally tough as I am and have to go through that scrutiny and that criticism. That's why I want to be the best I can to help."

108 years later: Trudeau and others pay tribute to victims of Komagata Maru incident and their descendants PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday in a statement on the anniversary of the Komagata Maru incident said: “In the spring of 1914, 376 Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus of South Asian origin arrived in Vancouver’s harbour aboard the Komagata Maru steamship. Like millions of others before and after them, they hoped to settle into Canada and build a better life for themselves and their families.

“Due to the racist and discriminatory laws of the time, most of the passengers were refused entry into Canada and detained on board. For two months, Canadian immigration officials confined them to the ship and denied them sufficient access to medical aid, food, or water. Despite the best efforts of the local South Asian community, the passengers lost their appeal in Canadian court and were forced to return to India, where some were killed and many others imprisoned.

“We will never forget the pain and suffering of those who lived through these shameful events at the hands of the Canadian government. Six years ago, I stood in the House of Commons to apologize on behalf of the Government of Canada to all those affected by the Komagata Maru incident. Today and every day, what happened more than a century ago serves as a reminder to all Canadians of the importance of treating each other with dignity and respect, fighting racism and discrimination in all its forms, and pro-

“Today, Canada is extremely proud to be the home of nearly two million people with South Asian heritage, including many Punjabis. B.C. Premier John Horgan said in a statement: “Today marks the 108th anniversary of the arrival of the Komagata Maru in Vancouver harbour.

The 376 Sikh, Muslim and Hindu passengers aboard were seeking a better life in Canada.

Their arrival was met by hostility, prejudice and injustice.

“Canadian immigration officials refused to allow the travellers to disembark, confining them to the cramped quarters aboard ship for two months. Supplies of food, and even water, were restricted. After a standoff in the harbour, the ship was forced from Canadian waters. Upon returning to India, 19 passengers were killed.

Others were imprisoned.

“Those barred from entry to British Columbia included students, labourers and former soldiers.

Their desire to contribute to a new land was thwarted and their possible contributions to this province will go forever unknown.

“In 2008, the Province of British Columbia formally apologized in the legislative chamber for its role in the Komagata Maru tragedy. Earlier this year, the government funded resources by the South Asian Canadian Legacy Project to raise awareness about the many contributions South Asian Canadians have made to the province’s culture, heritage and economy.

“Our government recently introduced an antiracism data act, the first of its kind in Canada.

It is an important step toward dismantling systemic racism and discrimination faced by Indigenous, Black and people of colour.

“There is more work to do. How far we have come is a testament to the incredible resiliency in our province, including those who stand up to injustice and try to make B.C. safer and more equitable for everyone.”

Calgary Mayor Gondek will have to wear Edmonton Oilers’ jersey, full facepaint of team’s colours

CALGARY Mayor Jyoti Gondek will have to wear the Edmonton Oilers’ jersey and full facepaint in that team’s colours following their 5-4 win over the Calgary Flames on a goal in overtime on Thursday night.

The Oilers clinched the series 4-1 with that win and will play in the Western Conference Final for the first time since 2006.

The last time the two teams met in the playoffs was in 1991 — 31 years ago — when the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames on a goal in overtime in Game 7.

Gondek and Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi had made a friendly wager to add some excitement to the Pacific Division finals series. Usually the wager involves only wearing

the winner’s jersey, but these mayors took it a notch higher by agreeing that the losing city’s mayor would be in full face paint celebrating the opposing team at the first council meeting following the end of the series.

Also, Calgary City Council will have to donate to Kids with Cancer Society in Edmonton in recognition of five-year-old Ben Stelter’s fight with brain cancer. Ben is a superfan of the Edmonton Oilers.

Gondek had pointed out: “It’s fitting that the month of May is Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Ben has been incredibly brave in this past year and all hockey fans are cheering him on.”

Supreme Court of Canada strikes down life without parole for mass murderers Alexandre Bissonnette killed six Muslims at a Quebec City mosque

THE Supreme Court of Canada on Friday unanimously struck down a punishment of life without parole for mass murderers in a unanimous decision. It ruled that the punishment is cruel and unusual and therefore illegal under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The decision is retroactive to 2011 when the law was enacted.

The court was ruling in the case of Alexandre Bissonnette, who killed six Muslims at a Quebec City mosque in 2017.

The National Council of Muslims (NCCM) said in a statement that “Bissonnette’s parole ineligibility period to 25 years will be received with difficulty by many, particularly for those in the community he ravaged on the night of January 29, 2017.”

The NCCM had intervener status in this case.

The NCCM said: “Bissonnette had pled guilty to murdering six Muslim worshippers at Quebec City’s Islamic Cultural Centre that night, while injuring and maiming 19 others.

“Friday’s decision rejects an appeal by the Crown to have Bissonnette serve life in prison behind bars. It also alters a section of the Criminal Code of Canada in allowing killers to serve a single 25-year period of

parole ineligibility regardless of how many victims there are.

“Whereas offenders like Bissonnette would have had to serve out a 25-year period of parole ineligibility for each person they killed in a mass murder, Friday’s decision reduces that to a single 25-year period regardless of the number of victims killed. Bissonnette will therefore be eligible for parole in 20 years, having already spent five years behind bars” NCCM CEO Mustafa Farooq said: “Today, we are thinking about the families. Their pain has never fully healed, and their wounds are reopened today as they struggle with the possibility of being among the one who killed their loved ones that night.”

Lina El Bakir, NCCM Quebec Advocacy Officer, said: “The pain, suffering, and anguish he caused with his calculated plan of mass murder will

never fully be extinguished for those whose lives he destroyed in Quebec City and beyond. The community in Quebec City will never reach full closure for their loss, particularly knowing that the cause of their pain may return to life among them in 20 years.”

NCCM said that it “stands with the victims, survivors and loved ones of the Quebec City mosque shooting. Their wounds will be re-opened each time Bissonnette appears before the parole board for a chance to leave prison. NCCM is committed to standing with the survivors and families when they appear in front of the parole board in 20 years, and every year after that.”

THE Conservative Party’s Critic for Justice and Attorney General, Rob Moore, and Critic for Public Services and Procurement, Pierre PaulHus, said in a statement: “Today’s decision by the Supreme Court of Canada is extremely disappointing and fails to stand up for the rights of victims.

“This decision means that mass murders like Alexandre Bissonnette, a man who senselessly murdered six people in their place of worship, may be free to walk the streets. It

means that Justin Bourque, a man who senselessly murdered three RCMP officers in Moncton, may be free to walk the streets.

“This ruling means that families of victims will be forced to sit through years of parole hearings with their family member’s killer, adding to the trauma they face and putting them through another cycle of revictimization.

“Further, this decision fails to recognize the value and rights of victims of these despicable acts, and allows for sentences that simply do not reflect the severity of crimes like mass murders.

“This is unacceptable. Canada’s worst murderers must remain locked behind bars.

Bus ridership leading the return to transit * HandyDART’s strong recovery was led by customers continuing to use the service to access critical health services like dialysis (24% of trips) or medical appoint-

NEW data from TransLink shows bus ridership is recovering faster than all other transit modes.

The Transit Service Performance Review (TSPR) details TransLink’s 2021 ridership and reveals that bus ridership bounced back strongest of all transit modes, reaching 62 per cent of pre-pandemic levels by the end of last year.

Bus ridership recovery outpaced HandyDART (59%), SkyTrain’s Expo and Millennium Lines (57%), the Canada Line and SeaBus (both at 54%), and the West Coast Express (26%). Since then, bus ridership recovery has grown to 71 per cent in May of 2022.

“It’s gratifying to see the commitment to transit by the people of Metro Vancouver over the last two difficult years,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn on Wednesday. “Transit has long been at the centre of our communities and will continue to be imperative to Metro Vancouver life, economic growth, and tourism.”

The report also shows that TransLink’s ridership recovery was stronger than most transit systems in Canada and the United States. With overall system-wide ridership recovery at 59 per cent at the end of 2021, TransLink exceeded the average recovery rate of transit systems in Montreal, Toronto, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and San Francisco. System-wide ridership has continued to grow and is currently at 70 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

Key 2021 transit trends: * There were 224 million boardings on Metro Vancouver’s transit system in 2021 * There were 2.2 million unique customers on TransLink’s system last year, equivalent to 84% of Metro Vancouver’s population * System-wide ridership recovery was greater on weekends than weekdays * The Southeast sub-region (Surrey, Langley, White Rock, North Delta) led ridership recovery for Metro Vancouver, reaching 75% recovery in 2021 - This led to an 8% increase in service for the sub-region in 2021 * RapidBus routes experienced some of the highest ridership in the region with three routes (R1, R4 and R5) ranking in the top 10 busiest bus routes * In Fall of 2021, bus ridership accounted for 63% of TransLink’s total ridership * Bus routes serving industrial areas have recovered stronger on average than other routes HandyDART trends: Some key findings from the 2021 HandyDART Service Performance Review: * 696,000 HandyDART trips were delivered in 2021, up 12% from 2020 * There was an 11% increase in new HandyDART customers in 2021

Murid Ghulam found guilty of aggravated assault in New

Westminster stabbing ON May 29 2021 at approximately 2 a.m., New Westminster Police Department patrol members responded to a report of a stabbing on Columbia Street outside of the Columbia SkyTrain Station. Officers located a man suffering from life-threatening stab wounds to his stomach and back.

Over the following days, detectives from the Major Crime Unit identified and safely arrested a suspect.

On May 25, 2022, Murid Ghulam was found guilty of: one count of aggravated assault.

“From the life-saving measures performed by the responding patrol officers to the detailed investigation completed by our Major Crime Unit, we’re proud of the work done on this case,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar on Thursday.

“We are committed to working with our community to provide a safe environment for all, if incidents like these happen we are committed to investigating them to the fullest extent possible.”

Police said that although Ghulam and the victim are associated to known Lower Mainland gangs, investigators could not confirm the motive behind the stabbing.

The suspect has been held in jail since his arrest and will be sentenced in the near future.

IHIT called in after body found in Surrey’s Hazelnut Meadows Park SURREY RCMP have called in the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) after a body was found in a park on Wednesday night.

On May 26 at 8:43 p.m., Surrey RCMP were called to Hazelnut Meadows Park located near 140 Street between 68 Avenue and 70 Avenue. Officers located a deceased man whose injuries were consistent with suspected foul play.

IHIT investigators will be working in partnership with the Surrey RCMP. Investigators are asking for dash cam video for May 26 between 8 and 9 p.m. in the area of 68 Avenue and 140 Street.

Police are currently in the evidence gathering phase.

One arrested in Delta stabbing

JUST after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the Delta Police Department responded to a report of an assault in North Delta.

The male victim who was suffering from an apparent stab wound drove himself from the scene, and DPD officers located him in Surrey.

The victim and the suspect are known to each other and there is no risk to the public. The victim suffered minor injuries and was released from hospital a short time later.

Police attended the residence in Delta where the assault took place and arrested the individual involved without further incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Surrey Langley SkyTrain project is one of key priorities in TransLink’s 2022 Investment Plan TRANSLINK’S 2022 Investment Plan is now final after being approved by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation and TransLink’s Board of Directors.

The Investment Plan will advance key transit priorities while stabilizing funding over the next three years, TransLink said on Thursday.

While TransLink has seen encouraging ridership growth and has now surpassed 70 per cent of pre-pandemic ridership, a prolonged drop in ridership from 2019 levels has resulted in significantly reduced fare revenues. Changes in travel behaviour and a growing adoption of zeroemission vehicles have also caused fuel tax revenues that fund transit to become a declining revenue source. This plan will stabilize funding over the next three years while advancing key transit and transportation priorities for the region.

Key priorities in the 2022 Investment Plan include: * The Surrey Langley SkyTrain project * Adding approximately 500 new batteryelectric buses * Opening public washrooms at six major transit hubs beginning in 2024 * Implementing the R6 RapidBus in Surrey and Delta, and early work on a new R7 RapidBus route, connecting the Canada Line from Richmond to the Expo Line * Increasing HandyDART service by 3 per cent * Advancing planning of transit service to Indigenous communities * Upgrading the Compass payment system to improve the customer experience * Improving and maintaining regional roads, walkways, and cycling paths Prior pandemic relief funding from the governments of Canada and British Columbia of $176 million, along with Safe Restart funding of $675.8 million, is helping vital transit services remain at or near pre-pandemic levels. This Investment Plan will help to stabilize transit operating funding over the next three years and will put TransLink in a better position to expand and improve transit service through the proposed 10-year plan titled Transport 2050:10-Year Priorities.

Man identified as suspect in Surrey sexual assault arrested

SURREY RCMP on Wednesday announced that Matthew Christopher Hamm, 43, who was identified as the suspect in an ongoing investigation into an alleged breakand-enter and sexual assault that occurred on Saturday, May 21, has been arrested.

On Wednesday at approximately 10:20 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of a possible sighting of the suspect in the 9600-block of 120 Street. Frontline officers attended the area, located and arrested the suspect without incident.

The Lung Screening Program expects to start screening close to 10,000 patients in the first year of the program, with this number expected to increase by approximately 15% per year. It is estimated the program will diagnose approximately 150 lung cancer cases annually, with more than 75% of these diagnosed at an earlier stage than without screening.

“The launch of Canada’s first provincewide Lung Screening Program is a credit to the team at BC Cancer, who are dedicated to quality patient care and passionate about reducing the burden of cancer in British Columbia, including for Indigenous people who are disproportionately impacted by lung cancer,” said David Byres, President and CEO, Provincial Health Services Authority. “I’d like to thank our government and community partners as well as our health-care workers and researchers who made this program a reality.”

Lung screening is available provincewide through 36 sites across all health authorities using the existing computed tomography (CT) scanning capacity.

Lung screening is best suited for those who are at high risk for lung cancer and who are not experiencing symptoms. Eligible participants may include those who are: * between 55 and 74; * currently smoking or have previously smoked; and * have a smoking history of 20 years or more.

Patients who meet the above criteria are encouraged to call the Lung Screening Program at 1 877-717-5864 to complete a consultation and risk assessment to determine eligibility.

Key benefits of a provincewide screening program: * equitable access for eligible British Columbians; * early detection resulting in improved survival rates; and * consistent, high-level screening and prevention delivered via a centralized program.

BC Cancer clinicians and researchers led by Dr. Stephen Lam, Medical Director of the BC Cancer Lung Screening Program, are leading the program’s implementation.

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Canada and worldwide,” Lam said.

“In B.C., seven people die of lung cancer every day. With 70% of all cases diagnosed at an advanced stage, the Lung Screening Program aims to change this trend by detecting the majority of lung cancers at an early stage when treatment is more effective.”

The centralized program will determine who is eligible, communicate results to patients, provide a pathway to cancer care if required and provide information on smoking-cessation programs.

Major partnership with the Netherlands signed to better support B.C. food security A new agreement signed between the Province of B.C. and the Netherlands will help further secure British Columbia’s food supply by developing agricultural technology (agritech) opportunities in both jurisdictions, the Province announced on Monday.

Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, co-signed the new action plan agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nature Quality of the Netherlands, on the first leg of B.C.’s trade mission.

“The ongoing international unrest, and the

ever-evolving changes to regional and global food systems, has shown us the importance of a more collaborative approach to develop new ways to produce healthy and sustainable food,” Kahlon said. “This agreement will help create more sustainable jobs and opportunities for British Columbians and allow us to better position B.C. as a frontrunner in agritech, aligned with key missions in our StrongerBC Economic Plan.”

The focus of this action plan is to deliver initiatives and cross-cultural learning exchanges to

support sustainable agricultural and agritech opportunities for people and businesses in B.C and the Netherlands. Encouraging collaboration in agriculture and agritech will increase food security, good jobs for British Columbians and help feed the world by fostering innovative solutions to create more productive, diverse and stronger food supply chains.

Surrey RCMP shoot woman with ‘weapon’

THE BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Surrey in which one woman has been injured.

Just after noon on Tuesday, frontline officers from the Surrey RCMP were called to the 10500-block of King George Boulevard for a report of a woman with a weapon. Officers located the woman in the 10400-block of King George Boulevard. She was reportedly still in possession of the weapon.

The woman was taken to a local area hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries.

The IIO BC has been notified and will be investigating police actions in this incident. The Surrey General Investigation Section is a conducting a concurrent Criminal Code investigation. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released, police said.

Man known to police injured in Maple Ridge shooting ON Wednesday at approximately 5:30 a.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the area 11300-block of McDougal Street in Maple Ridge. Police found one man suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victim is known to police and the Ridge Meadows investigators have engaged with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-BC) regarding any intelligence and information sharing, and will continue to liaise with CFSEU-BC as the investigation progresses.

Ridge Meadows RCMP Serious Crimes Unit are still in the evidence gathering stage of the investigation, however, this incident does not appear to be random, police said.

CTV News reported that neighbours told them they heard about five gunshots in a row and saw the driver of a light-coloured Mazda flee the scene.

It said that the Maple Ridge Fire Department said it responded to reports of a vehicle fire on River Road about 20 minutes after the shots were reported.

Investigators said they would like to speak to any witnesses who have not already spoken to police or if they have dash camera video, or residential video surveillance. 19-year-old man fatally stabbed near Vancouver nightclub

ONE man was killed near a Marpole nightclub on Monday morning in Vancouver’s fifth homicide of the year.

Vancouver Police officers responded to 9-11 calls for a fight that broke out on the street between a large group near Southwest Marine Drive and Hudson Street at 3:30 a.m. Officers found a 19-year-old man suffering from stab wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by VPD, BC Ambulance Service and Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, the victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody. The investigation is ongoing.

“This incident happened close to a nearby nightclub at closing time,” said Constable Tania Visintin on Monday. “We know there were a lot of people who saw what happened this morning and we need them to call police.”

Three in police custody after man dies in Abbotsford assault THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said on Thursday that an adult and two youths were in police custody following an assault in Abbotsford on Wednesday night in which one man died.

IHIT said the victim has been identified but his name is not being released pending next of kin notification. The victim is 41 years old and from Abbotsford with no connection to gangs.

On May 25 at around 10:30 p.m., Abbotsford Police Department responded to an assault in the 32900-block of South Fraser Way. First responders found a man suffering from serious life-threatening injuries. Emergency care was provided, but the man succumbed to his injuries. IHIT was called in to investigate.

An initial canvass was completed by Abbotsford Police’s Major Crime Unit and with assistance of patrol officers and the Lower Mainland Police Dog Service (IPDS), one adult and two youths were located and taken in custody for their suspected involvement. This is believed to be an isolated incident.

IHIT is working in partnership with Abbotsford Police and their Forensic Identification Section (FIS). The BC Coroners Service has also been engaged. Statements are being taken and the forensic examination continues. The investigation is still in its early stages and a timeline of events is being constructed.

“Homicide detectives are canvassing the area looking for witnesses and CCTV,” said IHIT Sgt. David Lee. “Although arrests have been made, we are still searching for key evidence, and priority tasks are being completed.”

IHIT is looking for dashcam footage or CCTV from the area in the 32900-block of South Fraser Way around 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on May 25.

ON Thursday at 1:15 p.m., Abbotsford Emergency Services responded to a serious collision at Ware Street and Bourquin Crescent involving a vehicle and two pedestrians.

Emergency service workers located two pedestrians who had been struck by a vehicle suffering life-threatening injuries.

The 88-year-old male and the 85-year-old female were transported to hospital. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were quite shaken, but were uninjured. They remained on scene and are cooperating with police.

The intersection at Ware Street and Bourquin Crescent was closed to all traffic while the Integrated Collision Analysis Reconstruction Service (ICARS) assisted with the investigation.

Chandigarh: Punjab Health Minister Vijay Singla was sacked from the State Cabinet on Tuesday over graft charges, and was arrested shortly afterwards, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asserting his government has zerotolerance to corruption.

The Chief Minister himself announced Singla’s removal from the Cabinet which was swornin just two months ago after the Aam Aadmi Party stormed to power, riding on the agenda of corruption-free governance, and other poll promises. Mann said the decision was made after he came to know that Singla was allegedly demanding a “1% commission” in tenders and purchases of his department. As he announced Singla’s sacking, Mann also said he also directed the police to register a case against the minister. Soon afterwards, the 52-year-old Singla was arrested by the Punjab Police.

which it came to fore that Singla and his aides were demanding a “1% commission”. It is learnt that an audio recording was also made which purportedly implicates Singla.

“A case was brought to my notice in which one minister in my government was demanding a 1% commission from each tender or purchase of his department. I took this case very seriously,” Mann said in a video message on Tuesday.

“I am taking strict action against that minister and I am removing him from the Cabinet. I am also giving directions to the police to register a case against him,” Mann said. “That minister’s name is Vijay Singla. He was the health minister.”

Mann said Singla has admitted to his alleged wrongdoings.

Asserting that the AAP government has zero-tolerance to corruption, Mann said the party convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also removed his food and supplies minister in 2015 over corruption, and handed over the case to the CBI. Kejriwal lauded Mann for his decision and said corruption is a betrayal with the country. “We are proud of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann who immediately removed his minister found involved in corruption.” Mann said the decision to oust Singla was historic. “I will not tolerate corruption of a single rupee. We want to turn Punjab into a corruption-free state.”

Highlighting the significance of civil aviation to propel industrialization across the state, the Chief Minister also underscored the need to make international civil enclave at Halwara to be operational at the earliest so that the trade and industrial activities in the vicinity of Ludhiana, the state’s industrial hub, could get a major boost.

Aryan Khan cleared in drugs case; appropriate action recommended against former NCB zonal director Mumbai: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) filed its charge sheet before a special court in Mumbai on Friday and has not named actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan, 23, in the drug racket case.

As per a press note released by the agency, “All accused were found in possession of narcotics except Aryan (Khan) and Mohak. The touchstone of the principle of proof beyond reasonable doubt has been applied. Based on which a complaint has been filed against 14 accused and a complaint against six (including Aryan Khan) is not filed due to lack of sufficient evidence.” The 6,000-page charge sheet named Arbaaz Merchant, Munmun Dhamecha and 12 others. Khan and five others have not been named.

On March 28, the agency filed an application before the special Narcotics Drugs Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act court, seeking more time to file a charge sheet in the drug case busted on October 2 when 13 grams of cocaine, five grams of MD (mephedrone), 21 grams of charas, 22 pills of MDMA and ₹1,33,000 cash were seized at the International Cruise Terminal, Mumbai.

The case was transferred to a special investigation team (SIT) on November 6, 2021, and on March 2, its chief Sanjay Singh said that it was highly premature to say that there was no evidence against Khan in the case.

Aryan Khan S.N. Pradhan said the SIT went by the principle of “beyond reasonble doubt”, based on which there was not sufficient evidence against six of the 20 accused persons. Therefore, the charge sheet was filed against 14 others within the stipulated time period. A supplementary one would be submitted in case the probe team came across any further evidence.

On October 29, the Bombay High Court granted bail to Khan and two others after he was arrested on October 2. It directed that they be released from the Arthur Road Jail after executing a cash bond of 1 lakh with one or more sureties.

Also, appropriate action against the former Mumbai zonal director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Sameer Wankhede, has been recommended to the competent authority for a “shoddy” initial probe into the cruise case in which the agency has not found any prosecutable evidence against Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, according to government sources.

Under Wankhede’s supervision, an NCB team arrested Aryan Khan along with others on October 3 last. Accused of offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, he spent 22 days in judicial custody before being released from jail on bail.

It is learnt that the government has now recommended to the Finance Ministry that appropriate action be initiated against the officer, who was sent back to his parent organisation after his extended tenure with the NCB ended in December last.

An independent witness in the case, Prabhakar Sail, had alleged extortion in the case. The then Maharashtra government Minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader, Nawab Malik, had also accused Wankhede of using a forged a

caste certificate claiming himself to be from the Scheduled Caste category to get the job. The official had denied the charges.

However, taking cognisance of various allegations and prima facie evidence of some irregularities during the probe, NCB Director General S.N. Pradhan ordered a vigilance inquiry. Action was also taken against some officials. The case was transferred to the agency headquarters’ Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Deputy Director General (Ops) Sanjay Kumar Singh.

According to NCB officials, the SIT detected serious procedural lapses on the part of the first team. No drugs was found on Aryan Khan. Consumption charge was invoked, but his medical examination had not been done in this regard.

In his statement, his friend told the team that drugs he carried was not for Aryan Khan.

There was no material available warranting the action of opening Aryan Khan’s mobile or WhatsApp chat. The mobile phone had not been seized formally. The SIT went through the impugned chat messages but did not find any evidence establishing his alleged role. An official pointed out that, as per court directive, WhatsApp chats could not by themselves be treated as primary evidence.

The NCB chief has recently directed the officials not to take up small cases and focus on unearthing the cases which have national security implications and those with international links. “Stringent action will be taken against those who do not adhere to the orders,” said a senior official.

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Wednesday congratulated Thomas Cup winner Dhruv Kapila on behalf of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann by visiting his house in Ludhiana.

Hayer said with the historical victory in Thomas Cup, Kapila has not only made Punjabis proud, but has also brought laurels to the country.

He said that this achievement of Kapila would become a source of

He said soon the sports policy would be amended and all flaws would be fixed.

The previous governments developed sports stadiums in Punjab, but failed to develop grounds.

They even failed to provide basic sports kits to the sportspersons.

He said the present state government would give special emphasis for development of sports at grassroots so as to regain its lost glory.

Veteran Akali leader Tota Singh passes away Chandigarh (IANS): Veteran Akali leader and former Punjab Agriculture Minister Tota Singh passed away in Chandigarh on Saturday after a prolonged illness, the family said.

He was 80.

Singh was a sitting member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

He suffered from pneumonia last year that infected his lungs.

Tota Singh was a trusted person of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and is credited with making English a compulsory subject from Class 1 in government schools.

He was battling with a liver ailment and was admitted to the Fortis Hospital in Mohali for the past few days, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema told the media.

Badal recalled his nearly half-a-century association with the late Akali stalwart and said,

“Jathedar Sahib was a tireless crusader and was always among the first to offer to make sacrifices for safeguarding the interests of the Sikh quom, Punjab, and Punjabis.

“His commitment to the ideals of Punjab’s unity and of peace and communal harmony continued to strengthen my own commitment in this regard.”

Badal recalled how Tota Singh played a major role in SAD’s tireless efforts to reclaim the glory of the Khalsa Panth after the community had been hit hard by the events of 1984.

SAD President Sukhbir Badal also expressed condolence at the demise of Tota Singh and said that he was deeply saddened to learn about his death.

Two-time Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said in a tweet that he prayed that eternal peace be granted to the departed soul and strength to the family to bear this loss.

AAP trying to enforce Delhi’s ‘failed’ education model: Akali Dal

Chandigarh (IANS): The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday condemned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for trying to enforce the Delhi government’s ‘failed’ education model on Punjabis, even as it asked Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to stop deriding Punjab schools and its education standards following the release of the National Achievement Survey 2021 that ranked Punjab students ahead of Delhi at all levels of school education.

Asking the Chief Minister to congratulate the government school children of Punjab as well as seek their apology for defaming them, SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said students of Punjab had fared better than their counterparts in Delhi in the survey which evaluated the education quality and overall health of the education system in the country.

a propaganda tool by AAP in Punjab as well as country wide is a complete failure. Bhagwant Mann should acknowledge this fact and not try to impose it on Punjabis, besides working to strengthen the current Punjab model which had given good dividends to the state in the national survey.”

Cheema said school children from Punjab had fared better than their counterparts in Delhi when compared class-wise from class three, class five, class eight and class 10. He said Punjab students had stood first as far as comprehending mathematics was concerned, second in case of social sciences and third in case of English.

“We must build on this achievement by developing both short- as well as long-term interventions to improve learning levels fur-

ther as per the findings of the independent survey conducted by the Union Education Ministry. The Chief Minister should now reject the Delhi model of school education firmly. Not doing so would amount to betraying the interests of Punjab and Punjabis.”

The Akali leader said the education system of any state was built over a period of time and lauded the vision of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who had not only given a fillip to school education in the state but had come up with the concept of meritorious schools and Adarsh schools to provide ultra modern education to the poorest of the poor.

“The AAP government should build on these concepts to improve the education system in the state even further,” Cheema added.

Punjab Chief Minister launches portal for direct seeding of rice

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday launched a direct seeding of rice (DSR) portal to facilitate farmers to give their consent for areas to be sown with this technology.

Lauding this farmer-friendly initiative, Mann said it would be instrumental to compile the entire data about each and every farmer, who has opted for DSR technique besides ensuring payment of Rs 1,500 per acre after proper verification through this portal to the genuine beneficiaries in a fair and transparent manner.

Chandigarh (IANS): Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has asked the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to remove the harmonium from the holiest of Sikh shrines, Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as Golden Temple, in Amritsar, as it is not part of the authentic Sikh traditions.

To overcome the shortage, Gurmat Sangeet departments in SGPC-runs colleges have recently started training in string instruments.

“It was blissful when harmonium was not in use by raagis,” says a Punjabi University professor who specialises in Gurmat Sangeet.

However, critics see banishing the harmonium a travesty. They say listen to ‘raag kirtan’ with string instruments and “you will know the difference”.

The eTorque system restarts the engine and resumes forward motion within 70 milliseconds after an auto-stop. An interactive deceleration fuel shutoff system also saves fuel. Fuel economy for the 5.7L Hemi V8 vis rated at L/100Km: city- 13.4/highway – 10.5/combined-12.1.

The 2022 Ram 1500 etorque Hemi has no real downsides – however it does get very expensive with the fully optioned models. To be expected with a truck that is refined, updated, and improved with every generation.

The M4 is particularly striking -looking and shouts performance with a range of standard and optional M Performance Parts, The M Competition is pricy at a base price of $91,600. Plus, BMW Destination charge of $2,480. What you get is the 503 hp engine, M exterior bodyworks, wheels, and an interior chock full of signature M touches, such as M-specific leather seats, chunky new steering wheel with red M buttons, M-coloured seat belts, unique digital displays, and a new gear shifter.

New for 2022 is an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, replacing the previous dual clutch 7-speed unit. Staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch wheels an adaptive suspension, adjustable brake pedal feel, and an adjustable exhaust sound are also standard spec.

The AWD variant costs $2,500 more than the RWD. Power and output remains the same at 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, but the AWD will reach 0-100 km/h fourtenths of a second faster at 3.5 seconds.

The AWD version has a revised front axle geometry and steering ratio been revised for this model.

We tested the high performance2022 BMW M4 M Competition with the signature M quad exhausts and the aggressive front and rear body kit. There is a sportier wide track stance and the latest-generation suspension, and improved aerodynamics. In Canada, the M4 is available in two models: the xDrive30i powered by a turbocharged inline-four producing 248 hp/258 lb-ft; and the X4 M40i with a twinscroll, turbocharged inline-six generating 355 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The Competition model as tested features the 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six. Torque is: 479 lb-ft @ 2,750 - 5,500rpm at 473 hp and 442 lbft of torque to a ground pounding 503 hp!

Downsides are few- expect a hard ride for starters, and the Coupe style body compromises rear visibility and cargo space slightly. And then there is the price – steep for us mere mortals, but well worth it, if performance is paramount. The specification is world class and the BMW ownership experience and performance beyond compare. Nicely done!

BC REALTORS® Advocate for Better Consumer Protections During 2022 Government Liaison Days On May 10 and 11, many BC REALTORS® took part in the BC Real Estate Association’s 2022 Government Liaison Days (GL Days), an event where Realtors from across BC convene to discuss government liaison issues and meet with their local MLAs. First held in 1988, GL Days connects Realtors from across the province, giving them a forum to showcase discuss issues pertinent to BC’s real estate sector with their colleagues and members of the government. Typically, GL Days takes place in Victoria, but due to ongoing travel concerns as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event took place virtually, hopefully for the last time.

This year, attendees discussed potential solutions to improve housing affordability and strengthen consumer protections. These issues were a continuation of advocacy undertaken by BCREA through our paper, “A Better Way Home: Strengthening Consumer Protections in BC Real Estate.”

In attendance to speak with Realtors were MLAs David Eby, BC’s Housing Minister and Attorney General, and Liberal Housing Critic, Mike Bernier.

Strengthening Consumer Protections The first series of recommendations discussed at GL Days was related to Bill 12, the Property Law Amendment Act, which enables the government to implement a “cooling off period” for

buyers of residential real estate.

Realtors are concerned that a “cooling off period” will worsen affordability by increasing the number of frivolous offers. To mitigate these risks, we propose an exemption for situations where both the buyer and seller agree to waive their right to rescission. There are many instances where a mandatory “cooling off period” would not make sense and a property needs to be sold quickly, such as the result of a divorce, health problems or other unexpected circumstances.

Increasing Housing Supply To address long-term consumer protection concerns, Realtors are advocating for improvements to housing supply as a key function to improve affordability. We recommend a provincial policy review to consider tying development approvals to housing targets, such as a local government’s Official Community Plan or Housing Needs Report. This ask mirrors recommendations from both the Development Approvals Process Review and Expert Panel on the Future Housing Supply and Affordability in BC. Our second recommendation for solutions to housing affordability is a provincial, permanent housing roundtable that brings together all levels of government and housing stakeholders to address challenges and construct innovative solutions.

Bend so you don’t break

GETTING older takes a toll. Weakening bones, increasing aches and pains, and failing balance, flexibility and strength can make the body feel like worn-out baggage.

But there’s a curious truth in an ancient Hindu text that states, “Everyone else is conquered by the body, but the body is conquered by yogis.”

For centuries, yoga has been practiced by people all over the world for religious, spiritual rehabilitation or fitness reasons. The older set may see the neighbourhood yoga studio as a place for the young and nimble, but there is ample evidence that aging seniors benefit physically and mentally from instruction in the “sun salutation”, “tree pose”, or amusingly named positions like the “chair pigeon” or “cat-cow pose”.

Yoga combines movement (asana) and breathwork (pranayama). The beneficial effects of yoga include relief from back pain, eased arthritis symptoms, better sleep, and improved mood. Regular yoga practice also promotes social connectivity and improved self-care.

Yoga stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system – the “rest and digest” mechanism of the body – reducing heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. Studies show decreases in blood glucose, cholesterol and sodium and increases in oxytocin. Yoga is effective in building strength, mobility and flexibility and aids in weight management and posture. Improved balance and functional movement are major benefits for seniors at risk of falling.

These physiological benefits have led to the incorporation of yoga into the treatment of many chronic health conditions including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and chronic pain.

While many people initially look to yoga for

physical health benefits, there are important psycho-spiritual perks as well.

As a mindful practice, yoga increases concentration, memory, and attention. Hostility, anxiety, and depression are reduced.

Instead, improvements in outlook and general self-acceptance arise. Breathwork patterns common to yoga practice are energizing and often used to treat depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.

Dr. Kirsten Blokland, a developmental psychologist and certified yoga teacher, states, “Synchronizing movement with breath can impart a feeling of coherence and integration – something that is so needed in our society, where many people report feeling fragmented and unsettled because of the hectic pace of our lives.”

Dr. Blokland is part of a growing community of yoga specialists focusing on restorative yoga to assist with the healing process in response to significant medical challenges.

Where do you start if you can’t touch your toes? It’s unfortunate if yoga conjures ideas of pretzel-like contortions. To the contrary, yoga can be enjoyed by even those with limited mobility.

Chair yoga, a style of yoga performed in a seated position is a suitable starting point for people having difficulties getting from standing to seated on the floor repeatedly.

Sitting down lowers the centre of gravity, protects hip and knee joints from weightbearing and eliminates the need to rely on the shoulders and wrists for support. With the added stability of a chair, participants can concentrate more deeply on breathing and poses.

There is also added accessibility of seated yoga. Everybody has access to a chair. Chair yoga can be done in the kitchen, in the office, or anywhere there is a place to sit.

Chair yoga can be just as beneficial as other forms of practice, such as on a traditional yoga mat.

“Chair/modified poses are in many ways just as beneficial as traditional asana poses – particularly when we consider that the benefits exist not just in the physical domain, but also in the psychological and spiritual domains,” says Dr. Blokland.
