U.S. federal government takes over Canadian trucker Ajitpal Sanghera’s prosecution in 60-kilogram cocaine bust WHATCOM County prosecutor Donna Bracke told The VOICE on Tuesday that the federal government had picked up the prosecution of Canadian trucker Ajitpal Sanghera in relation to the cocaine bust on May 9 reported in this newspaper last week. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in coordination with Homeland Security Investigations-Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Pacific Highway Truck Crossing in Blaine, allegedly found 60.64 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated value of $3 million, in the tractor-trailer Sanghera was driving to Canada. The seizure occurred during an outbound inspection when CBP officers referred the Canadian citizen’s tractor-trailer for additional examination. While searching the trailer, CBP officers found five small duffle bags on the floor. Inside the duffle bags, officers found 50 plastic wrapped packages containing cocaine and Sanghera was taken into custody. He was eventually transferred over to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office along with the narcotics. Whatcom County jail records showed that Sanghera was booked on May 10 and “released” on May 15 with “charge dismissed.”

Bracke explained to The VOICE that the charge was dismissed by the state (Washington) as it was taken over by the federal government. Only one agency can prosecute a case. On May 16, based on a complaint and

JASMAN Basran, 21, of Surrey, has been criminally charged in connection with the homicide of Andrew Baldwin, 30, in Surrey on November 11, 2019. On Wednesday (May 20), Jasman Basran of Surrey was arrested by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) and charged by the B.C. Prosecution Service with accessory after the fact to murder in Baldwin’s death. He will appear before a judge in B.C. Provincial Court on Thursday (May 21). “The evidence trail that our investigators have been following for the past several months has led to another arrest and a third man charged in the case,” said IHIT Sgt. Frank Jang. “The investigation still remains active as we believe we have yet to arrive at the end of the trail. We continue to urge those with information to come forward.” On January 27, IHIT announced that Jagpal Hothi and Jordan Bottomley have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the homicide of Baldwin. Homicide victim Andrew Baldwin IHIT and later charged by the B.C. Prosecution Service. On November 11, 2019, at approximately 4:52 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a call for assistance from a home in the 10700-block of 124th Street. When officers arrived on scene, they found Andrew Baldwin unresponsive with critical injuries. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Integrated Police Dog Services was brought in to conduct a search for the suspect, who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants with reflective material around the bottom of
the pant leg. He was last seen northbound on 124th Street. Baldwin’s death was deemed a homicide and IHIT was then called in to take conduct of the investigation. IHIT worked closely with the Surrey RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the B.C. Coroners Service to gather further evidence. Baldwin’s brother, 27-yearold Keith Baldwin, was fatally shot in downtown Chilliwack on October 22, 2019. He was on life support for some time, but did not survive. At the time, IHIT Constable Harrison Mohr said: “The victim in this case was known to police. This appears to have been a targeted shooting, although our investigators are still looking into whether the victim had any direct connections to gangs or the drug trade.” Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Should you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
