by Vancouver Sun on Monday) that crashed on April 30 in Ontario, killing both the pilots and two men wanted by police – alleged killer Gene Lahrkamp, 36, of Kincardine, Ontario, and Independent Soldiers gangster Duncan Bailey, 37, of Kamloops, B.C. Lahrkamp was wanted by the Royal Thai Police for the alleged murder of Indian gangster Jimi Sandhu,

who was gunned down by two men in Rawai, Phuket in Thailand, on February 4. The other alleged killer, Matthew Dupre, was arrested in Edmonton, Alberta, on February 20, and is being held in detention by the Alberta court, pending a decision on Thailand’s extradition request.

Lahrkamp had been living in Trail, B.C., before Sandhu’s murder.

Sandhu, who was aligned with the UN Gang that is in conflict with the Brothers Keepers, still had connections here in B.C. even after being deported from Canada in early 2016. He had been suspected of killing Red Scorpions’ gang leader Matthew Campbell, 31, of Abbotsford

As Canadian police searched for Lahrkamp, it appears that the gang or gangs that had arranged for Sandhu’s murder arranged to keep him hidden in an isolated place either in Ontario or some Prairie province. And they got help from Bailey who seems to have been the person to arrange for the aircraft from Richmond. Bailey was wanted for breaching bail conditions in connection to a B.C. murder plot.

According to a Canadian Press report on Thursday the online flight tracking site FlightAware shows the plane arrived at the Boundary Bay Airport at 7:44 p.m. on April 23. The next entry shows the plane

flew between Claresholm, Alberta, and Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, on April 28 before continuing east.

The final entry tracks its path from Dryden, Ontario, to the crash site near Sioux Lookout, Ontario, on April 29. But there is a gap in flight records between BC and Alberta. Was there a stopover in Kamloops?

CP also reported that a public aircraft registry lists the Piper as being registered for private use and “Abhinav” is listed as the contact for A&T Flights Inc. on the company’s Instagram page. Among the followers of that Instagram page are both

EWW! It sure smelled fishy — rotten fishy — to Conservative MP Laila Goodridge in the House of Commons last week on Friday.

That happens when you are caught with your pants down!

That was the Liberal MP for Brampton Centre, Shafqat Ali, who Goodridge noted “might be participating in a washroom” virtually since that was visible to MPs on an internal stream.

According to media reports, Assistant Deputy Speaker Alexandra Mendes told the House that “a page has confirmed that there was a member that appeared to be in the washroom.”

She advised members to “be very prudent” on how they used their devices.

An hour or so later, Ali appeared in the House chamber via Zoom from his riding to beg for forgiveness.

He said: “I want to take this opportunity to apologize sincerely and unreservedly to all members of the parliament for the unfortunate event that transpired last Friday. I ask that the House and its members to forgive me for my lapse in judgment. I take this matter extremely seriously and I promise never to repeat this error again.”

Hong’s Twitter account shows that he was in Australia when he started

the account in September 2015. His Facebook page states: “Life events – Moved to Kamloops March 7, 2018.”

He later moved to the Lower Mainland. His last post was on April 10 this year.

MEANWHILE, media reports have been quoting Transport Canada that neither Handa nor his private company, A&T Flights Inc. did not have a valid Air Operator Certificate at the time of the crash in Ontario.

Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada are

investigating along with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), reports kenoraonline.com of Ontario. Transport Canada confirmed that it had received previous complaints about Handa in connection to a December 2012 investigation into illegal air taxi services, but added that details could not be made public as yet.

The Vancouver Sun’s Kim Bolan was the first to report on Monday that Handa was offering scenic tours and charter services on Facebook Marketplace in the Piper and that B.C. flight instructor Azam Azami had contacted Trans-

port Canada last December about it.

According to Azami, he posed as a potential customer and Handa admitted that he wasn’t a flight instructor. Handa told Azami he didn’t own anything and that the company he worked for was owned by others.

Bolan reported that the company was only registered with the B.C. government in March 2022 and that corporate records list only Handa and Tessa Melnychuk as company directors.

Also, Melnychuk is the owner of the Piper. She and Handa lived together at a Steveston address.

MP Sarai’s motion on permanent residency for temporary foreign workers passed unanimously

PRIVATE Members Motion, M-44, Permanent residency for temporary foreign workers, introduced by Randeep Sarai, MP for Surrey Centre, was passed unanimously in the House of Commons on Wednesday following a second hour of debate.

Motion M-44 addresses ongoing challenges with the immigration system, filling critical gaps in the labour market by creating more accessible pathways to permanent residency for temporary foreign workers (TFWs).

With an aging population and domestically low birth-rate, Canada is seeing a decrease in population. Some estimate that by 2030 population growth will come exclusively from immigration, which already accounts for almost 100% of Canada’s labour force growth and 75% of Canada’s population

growth – mostly in the economic category, said Sarai.

Despite Canada’s historically low unemployment rate (5.2% in April 2022), industries like the agriculture sector continued to experience high job vacancy rates that they are unable to fill with domestic labour.

Temporary foreign workers contribute to Canadian economic growth and ensuring regional labour demands are fulfilled, however the path to permanent residency remains out of reach for many of these workers, noted Sarai.

While there are pathways for to permanent residency (PR) for lower skilled workers such as through regional and industry specific programs, TFWs continue to face challenges in gaining PR status due insufficient higher education, and low language

testing scores. Despite their valuable contribution to our communities and economy, and great employment records over a number of years working in this country – TFWs continue to be at a disadvantage in attaining PR status. This motion encourages the Government of Canada to continue to work towards making PR status attainable to more TFWs. Sarai said: “Not a day goes by that I do not receive a call or an email from an employer who cannot find workers for their business. From restaurant owners, produce packers and logistics companies to IT groups, everyone needs workers. As we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic, things can change very quickly and the work that temporary foreign workers do to support our economy is vital to Canada’s success.”

Conservatives ask government to issue travel documents for Afghans fleeing Taliban

JASRAJ Singh Hallan, Conservative critic for Immigration Refugees and Citizenship, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative critic for Public Services and Procurement, on Tuesday called on Immigration Minister Sean Fraser and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to issue urgently needed single-use travel documents to Afghans who worked with Canada and who are now

fleeing the Taliban.

Hallan and Paul-Hus said in a statement: “The revelations that came out of the Special Committee on Afghanistan last night, and tragic personal stories reported by media, underscore the crisis Afghans are facing under Taliban rule. People are being tortured and killed while waiting to come to Canada.

Delays, red tape, and unreasonable requirements has made this process untenable. The time for bureaucratic excuses has long past, Conservatives will continue to advocate for those Afghan interpreters, support staff, and their families desperate to flee the Taliban, and we will hold this government to account for their handling of this tragic situation.”

Sarthak Tyagi of Surrey, Nazifa Nawal of Burnaby among 17 recipients of Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards in Canada SOUTH Asians Sarthak Tyagi of Surrey and Nazifa Nawal of Burnaby are among the 17 recipients of the prestigious 40th annual Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards across Canada.

The 17 exceptional young Canadian recipients receive individual scholarships valued at up to $28,000 to recognize young humanitarians who have demonstrated courage and determination through academics, athletics, and civic life.

The 17 recipients of the 2022 Terry Fox Humanitarian Award come from all walks of life, and each has faced challenges that have shaped their worldview and driven them to help others in their communities. Whether advocating for youth, mental health, education access, refugee integration, child welfare, environmental action, medical and health research or aboriginal rights, each young award recipient has committed to changing the world for the better and living a life of action, change and purpose.

Sarthak Tyagi current-recipients/ Sarthak Tyagi of Surrey Moving to Canada as an immigrant in 2016, Sarthak received ELL support throughout his schooling. He recognized the benefit the support he received helped overcome challenging barriers and aided him as he settled into a new culture and life in Canada. Being raised in a low-income immigrant family, Sarthak understands well the cultural and financial challenges of many of his peers. He uses this experience and what he has learned from living in a low-income community to identify and create opportunities for others.

A grade 12 student at Queen Elizabeth Secondary High School, he is the President of Learn Lab, where he mentors and tutors atrisk pupils. The major goal of this program is to model and guide students toward making socially responsible decisions. He further uses his passion for engineering to make a positive change in the lives of others. Sarthak innovated an affordable Smart Navigation Cane to aid blind and visually impaired individuals. The cane scans the surrounding environment and buzzes/vibrates when it detects nearby obstructions. He has been in contact with several Non-profit organizations globally to donate these canes. Sarthak is the captain of his school’s Royals Robotics team, which qualified to the quarterfinals of

the 2022 FIRST Robotics Regional Championship.

He is also an executive member of the Royal Brotherhood Leadership group, leads a weightlifting club, and helps organize various school events as being part of the Student and Grad Council. Sarthak also volunteers with the Surrey Food Bank, a non-profit, charitable organization. Additionally, he leads a community gala that has raised over $100,000 for the Surrey Memorial Hospital by selling raffle tickets, holding contests, and seeking donations from outside community groups. He will be attending the University of British Columbia this fall to study applied sciences on his path to becoming a computer engineer.

“Knowing that one out of every 33 individuals require humanitarian assistance should influence anyone to help those in need. We all come from diverse backgrounds and experience a variety of challenges throughout our lifetime. It is crucial for us to help one another and contribute to making our world a better place,” says Sarthak.

Nazifa Nawal of Burnaby Nazifa and her family moved to Vancouver from Bangladesh when she was eight years old. Her family faced poverty, language and cultural barriers, and the social pressure of living in one of the highest-risk housing projects in the region. They had difficulty communicating and adapting to their new environment with limited English language skills, but Nazifa has become a leader in her school and community with persistence and resilience.

As President of the Britannia Leo Club, Nazifa leads a group of students working to build a sense of community by engaging their peers in volunteer opportunities while fundraising for humanitarian causes. Nazifa prioritizes creating a safe and inclusive space where members feel comfortable sharing their ideas about events, places to donate, and how the club should be run.

They have raised money for a newly built community center in Kamloops supporting Residential School survivors and many

Nazifa is also the Chair of the Britannia Youth Council, a School Ambassador of Girls Can Talk Society, and a youth collaborator on AgendaGap (a UBC mental health research project) where they made calls to action about racism’s impact on youth mental health. Additionally, she volunteers for the Britannia Secondary School and Community Centre and the BIPOC Club, which strives to create a safe, inclusive, and equitable space for BIPOC students in the community. A passionate social justice advocate, she and her peers, started the first student-run BIPOC club in schools across the Vancouver School Board. She further created a new recycling system for her high school through a community project called YCAN (YMCA Community Action Network).

Nazifa plans to attend the University of British Columbia to study Psychology as she follows her career goals of becoming a criminal lawyer.

“The injustices I have faced have inspired me to make changes on a large scale, which is where my ambitions of becoming a criminal lawyer stem from. My strong determination to become a criminal lawyer started at an early age because I have always been passionate about serving my community and this inspired me to represent marginalized communities in court. It is critical for me to advocate for equity for myself and people like me in the next generation,” says Nazifa.

This follows the Notices of Debt (NoDs) that Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) began sending in November 2021 to benefit recipients who received an advance payment of $2,000 in 2020 but did not remain on the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) long enough to fully reconcile that payment by applying for subsequent payment periods. ESDC will issue the last of these letters in July 2022.

The CRA and ESDC said they wanted to assure Canadians they will continue to be supported when calling in to discuss their unique situations. They added that their call agents are able to work with individuals on a case-by-case basis, to find solutions to their situation, including flexible payment arrangements. There will be no interest or penalties applied to any repayments. The Government of Canada will also work with all impacted individuals to ensure any questions they may have are answered.

“We recognize that receiving this type of correspondence can be stressful and we remain committed to supporting Canadians. Individuals are encouraged to follow the directions they receive in any correspondence from the Government of Canada,” said the CRA press statement.

VANCOUVER Police are investigating a series of violent incidents involving teens, and are urging young people who feel unsafe to call police immediately or tell someone they trust.

“A number of teens have already been hurt, and we’re worried the violence will further escalate,” said Sgt. Steve Addison on Tuesday, adding that police believe many youth crimes still go unreported.

“That’s why we’re imploring young people to come forward if they’re a victim of violence or if they have information that could prevent someone else from getting caught up in a dangerous situation.”

VPD investigations include several swarmings, robberies, and reports of violent rituals meant to demean and humiliate peers. Since spring break, VPD officers have also encountered a concerning number of youth with imitation guns, bear spray, brass knuckles, and machetes near schools and in the community.

Incidents of note: * A 13-year-old boy was befriended online and lured from West Vancouver to Stanley Park through social media on April 24. Once in the park, he was swarmed by a group of intoxicated teenagers. They kicked, peppersprayed, and robbed him of his phone before assaulting a 63-year-old man who was also walking nearby. The young victim was found bloodied and walking on the seawall. * A 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy were assaulted and held at knife-point in two separate incidents while walking after dark in Kerrisdale on April 16. The boys were robbed of their backpacks, wallets, and electronics after being surrounded by 15 to 20 teens near East Boulevard and West 41st Avenue. * A teenaged boy had a pellet gun held to his head by another youth while sitting on the steps at the Vancouver Art Gallery the evening of April 9. The incident was not reported to police until hours later, when staff at the VAG reviewed security video. The victim never came forward and the suspect has not been identified. Police are now working to identify the victim and suspect. * A 19-year-old man was bear-sprayed and robbed of his backpack by a group of six youths while walking at night near East Boulevard and West 41st Avenue on March 23. He ran home and told a family member, but the suspects had left the area before police were notified.

The VPD is also warning parents and youth about a concerning trend of teenagers swarming, assaulting, and video-taping their peers in humiliating and demeaning bullying rituals. These rituals typically include a group of teens surrounding a lone victim, then punching, kicking, and slapping them until they fall to the ground, before forcing them to kiss their attackers’ shoes. Videos of the attacks are sometimes posted online.

“These incidents don’t just cause physical harm, they can lead to deep-rooted emotional trauma that leave permanent scars,” said Addison. “Sadly, the very nature of these incidents often deters victims from coming forward, because they fear retribution and further humiliation.”

The VPD encourages parents to speak with their children about bullying and violence,

and encourages teens with information about a crime to call police or seek help from someone they trust.

The VPD has also expanded targeted patrols and is continuing community outreach programs in an effort to prevent more violence and encourage victims to come forward.

BCGEU sues Vancity over pension dispute

‘Vancity will be filing a formal response in the B.C. Supreme Court in the coming days’ THE B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) announced on Monday that it had filed a Notice of Civil Claim in B.C. Supreme Court on April 27 against Vancity Credit Union over the financial institution’s unilateral decision to deny BCGEU members a jointly-trusteed, defined benefit pension plan that they had agreed to establish.

BCGEU President Stephanie Smith said: “Filing a lawsuit against an employer is an extraordinary step for any union to take, and filing this claim against Vancity is not a decision the BCGEU took lightly. But after years of delay tactics

by Vancity capped off by unilateral withdrawal from the plan we feel this is our best option to force Vancity to honour the commitments they made in bargaining. Our BCGEU members fought for this plan, they won it in bargaining, and now we’re going to the mat to make sure Vancity delivers on their commitment.”

The lawsuit aims to force Vancity to honour the agreement between the two parties. In that agreement, which has been in effect since 2020 after being overwhelmingly ratified by union members, Vancity committed to work with the BCGEU to develop a jointly-trusteed, defined-benefit pension plan for unionized worker, the BCGEU said.

Joint trusteeship means that the pension is administered by both employer representatives and union members. A worker voice is crucial in making sure workers’ pensions are whole and secure when it’s time to retire. Jointlytrusteed, defined-benefit pension plans are the gold standard, providing more secure benefits for workers compared to solely-trusteed plans.

Such plans have a preferred status under the

Man charged for allegedly assaulting sex trade worker in Surrey

RAYMOND Kellett, 26, was charged with aggravated assault and uttering threats on Sunday in relation to the May 5 assault in Whalley, Surrey RCMP said on Monday.

On May 5 at 2:24 a.m., police received a report of a woman screaming and a fire alarm ringing in the 13500-block of Old Yale Road.

Officers located a woman who had been physically assaulted by a man in the staircase of an underground parking lot. The man fled the area prior to police being called.

Police said that initial indications were that this assault was linked to street-level sex work. The Surrey Woman’s Centre’s SMART Van that works closely with the Surrey RCMP Special Victims Unit (SVU) was engaged to distribute information regarding this assault to their clients.

Surrey RCMP said that the suspect was identified and arrested on May 7.

Kellett was remanded into custody while he awaits his next court appearance.

The project will help provide sustainable and low-cost transportation choices for the Lower Mainland, while providing opportunities for transit-oriented development, new housing and economic development for people in Surrey and the Fraser Valley.

The project will extend the current Expo Line by 16 kilometres, from King George Sky-

Train to 203 Street in the City of Langley. The extension will run on an elevated guideway primarily along the Fraser Highway, adding eight new stations and three new bus exchanges along the route.

Once completed, the travel time from Langley City Centre to King George Station will be about 22 minutes, and just over an hour from Langley City Centre to Waterfront Station.

Surrey Langley SkyTrain is currently scheduled for completion in late 2028, two years earlier than first estimated.

Protest against Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline project at Burnaby Mountain

ON Saturday, May 7, the SFSS joined hundreds of people, dozens of notable organizations, and community members across the Lower Mainland came together to “hug” Burnaby Mountain and stand in solidarity against the Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline project. The SFSS organized a booth to take a public stance against the expansion and stand in solidarity with the SFU community. Vancouver City Councillor

Jean Swanson also participated in the protest.

Protestors say that this pipeline is being pushed by the federal government, despite not obtaining free, prior, and informed consent from all Indigenous Nations whose territories the pipeline will go through. They say that it is important that SFU community members stand in solidarity with these Nations and Indigenous land defenders on the

front lines.

According to sfu350.com, this pipeline will cause extreme safety risks for everyone on the Mountain. The Burnaby Fire Department Chief has said that the Fire Department does not have the infrastructure in place to stop a fire of such magnitude if one were to happen. With the doubling of tanks in the TMX tank farm (with limited space in between) and rising summer temperatures, the risk of

a fire is very concerning. Along with these concerns and oil spills, those at SFU Burnaby would be physically trapped on top of the mountain as there is only one intersection that goes up/down the mountain and the tank farm happens to be right there.

City of Surrey wins BCRPA Facility Excellence Award for Clayton Community Centre

THE City of Surrey’s Clayton Community Centre has received the Facility Excellence Award by the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) for projects over $1 million. The award recognizes outstanding innovation in facility concept, design, development, maintenance, or operation of a facility.

“A key focus in the design of the new Clayton Community Centre was to create a public space that prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum on Tuesday. “I’d like to thank the BCRPA for recognizing our efforts to make the Clayton Community Centre a place where residents can come together to play, exercise and connect. We are proud to offer our community innovative recreational and gathering spaces in Clayton and throughout Surrey well into the future.”

Clayton Community Centre has been designed to offer a unique mix of welcoming spaces that support social inclusivity, gathering, and connection of various ages, family compositions, genders, abilities, and cultures.

With fully universal washrooms and changerooms, best practices in wayfinding and signage, adaptable fitness equipment, and a hearing loop – a magnetic wireless sound system for use by people with hearing aids – the centre sets a high bar on accessibility and inclusivity.

Surrey RCMP seize drugs, cash and handgun from man who was target of a shooting SURREY RCMP’s Community Response Unit recently seized a firearm, ammunition, cash and a large amount of drugs in Newton from a man who was the target of a shooting earlier in the year.

On April 27 at approximately 3 p.m., Surrey RCMP’s Community Response Unit were conducting proactive patrols and located a man who had fled from police the previous

day when they attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Officers arrested the 35-year-old man in the 13100-block of 61 Avenue and transported him to Surrey RCMP cells.

During the investigation, officers located a handgun, ammunition, $1,455 in Canadian currency, 550 grams of suspected fentanyl, 140 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 18 grams of suspected crack cocaine

and 45 grams of unknown pills.

The investigation remains ongoing and charges have not yet been laid in relation to the items seized, as further analysis is required on the drugs and firearm. Despite charges not being laid, the accused remains in custody for breaching a Conditional Sentence Order in relation to previous charges.

“There is a nexus between

gun violence and the drug trade, which is why the Surrey RCMP continues to proactively target individuals who engage in crime,” said Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Constable Gurvinder Ghag. “This individual has already been shot at due to his involvement in criminal activity, yet continues to put himself and others in the community at risk.”

Arnold De Jong and wife Joanne are Abbotsford homicide victims been released to further the investigation and identify additional witnesses and associates, IHIT said. Homicide investigators are still collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and constructing a timeline. At this stage, it is uncertain if this was a random or targeted incident.

According to one media report, Arnold De Jong was a long-distance trucker.

IHIT said it is working in partnership with Abbotsford Police and their Forensic Identification Section (FIS). The BC Coroners Service has also been engaged. IHIT remains positioned in Abbotsford, maintaining close communication and the sharing of intelligence, in-

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is seeking witnesses and CCTV video to assist in this homicide investigation.

On May 9 at around 10:26 a.m., the Abbotsford Police Department responded to a residence in the 33600-block of Arcadian Way and found two deceased adults inside.

Suspect who assaulted 17-year-old girl on TransLink bus arrested THE suspect in the unprovoked assault of a 17-year-old girl on a TransLink bus on April 1 has been identified and arrested, the Metro Vancouver Transit Police tweeted on Saturday.

“Transit Police appreciate all of the tips received by the public, which led to a quick arrest by investigators,” the MVTP added.

On Friday, April 1, just before 2 p.m., a 17-year-old girl boarded a route 335 bus headed to Newton Exchange in Surrey, made her way to the back of the bus and sat down. At an unknown point in the journey, a

man boarded the same bus and began acting erratically while heading to the back of the bus, where he sat near the teen.

The suspect continued to act more and more agitated, eventually standing up and blocking the teen into her seat. Then, without any provocation, he allegedly punched her in the head several times, causing her glasses to fly off her face. Transit Police said on Thursday that after their detectives had exhausted all investigative avenues available to them, they appealed to the public for help.

Nurses aren’t celebrating National Nursing Week, says BCNU AS two public health emergencies continue to play out in BC’s health-care system, the BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) said on Monday that nurses are using their voices this National Nursing Week to highlight long-standing problems that are impacting their mental health and patient care.

Coquitlam fatal stabbing was result of argument; no gang connection

INTEGRATED Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) Sgt. David Lee said on Monday that Sunday’s homicide in Coquitlam “was an argument that turned into an altercation and stabbing.”

He added: “This was an isolated incident and the Glen Elementary community is not at risk.”

On May 8 around 12:40 a.m., the Coquitlam RCMP responded to the 3000-block of Glen Drive in Coquitlam for reports of a stabbing.

First responders found a 29-year-old male suffering from stab wounds. Despite all efforts to revive him, the victim succumbed to his injuries.

IHIT took over conduct of the investigation and has been working in partnership with

the Coquitlam RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Section (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service.

Although still early in the investigation, homicide investigators confirmed that this was an isolated incident and has no connection to gangs. One person was taken into custody but no charges have yet been laid. Investigators are still in the evidence gathering phase but are not searching for additional suspects.

With all persons known and accounted for, the names of the victim and suspect are not being released at this time.

Vancouver Election Office hiring more than 1,500 election officials THE Vancouver Election Office is hiring more than 1,500 election officials to assist voters at voting places across the city during advance voting days and on election day this upcoming October.

Positions at the voting place include: * Presiding Election Officials * Alternate Presiding Election Officials * Registration Clerk * Voting Coordinators Find out more and apply at vancouver.ca/ election-work.

The Election Office is looking for election officials who are personable and are committed to offering a non-partisan, positive experience to voters. Training sessions will be provided. Compensation starts at $315 for election day. Applicants do not need to be a Canadian citizen to work at the Vancouver Election.

Surrey’s ‘SMART Cart’ Outreach Program pairs bylaw officers with social workers

SURREY is piloting a new mobile outreach program that will pair City bylaw officers with contracted social workers to support unhoused individuals in City Centre. These ‘SMART Cart’ teams will provide immediate support to move individuals towards housing and other needed support services.

During its Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey Council voted to approve a contract with Lookout Housing and Health Society to supply trained and qualified community service workers as part of the SMART Cart teams for a period of one year, at a cost of $692,754.

“The ‘SMART Cart’ Mobile Outreach Project is one more example of Surrey’s innovative approach to supporting our most vulnerable citizens,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum on Tuesday. “To make meaningful change, we must do things differently. Everyone deserves a roof over their head and to be treated with dignity. The SMART CART initiative is another example of how Council is prioritizing help to those who are most marginalized in our community.”

The ‘SMART Cart’ pilot project will build on the success of the Surrey Mobilization and Resiliency Table (SMART). Led by the City and established in 2015, SMART connects individuals with critical supports and intervenes when they demonstrate acutely elevated risk. Since inception, 60% of cases have been successfully concluded because the overall risks have been lowered and connections to services have been made.

The new ‘SMART Cart’ program will augment this table’s work by providing mobile outreach services from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., providing referrals to SMART as well as other service providers and the BC Housing coordinated access referral system. The pilot is set to run through to July 31, 2023.

The ‘SMART Cart’ project is funded through the federal Safe Restart Agreement fund, which is being administered by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities through the ‘Strengthening Community Services’ grant program that makes funding available for projects to address COVID-19 impacts for vulnerable populations. The City, in partnership with BC Housing and Fraser Health, is implementing the first six projects of the Pandemic Response Program funded through the grant.

In partnership with the Province, the City of Surrey is delivering on much-needed housing across the city. In 2021, a total of 139 Supportive Housing Units opened in Surrey.

This year, another 387 Supportive and Transitional Housing Units will come on stream in Surrey.

Canadians supportive of government response to Ukraine-Russia conflict, but many say more is needed

Half (47%) have shown support or donated to Ukraine personally since conflict began A new study from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds Canadians mostly supportive of the fashion with which their government has responded and sought to support Ukraine, while many say they are doing their own bit to help.

Indeed, one-quarter of Canadians (27%) say they have donated money to support efforts to help Ukrainians since the war began in late February. Those over the age of 54 are most likely to be following the conflict and to have opened up their wallets. On the more symbolic side of this scale, nearly the same number (28%) have posted something in support on social media. A handful of Canadians (3%) say they have sponsored or supported a Ukrainian refugee or refugee family.

At the governmental level, where policy decisions can wield much

more considerable influence, Canadians are largely supportive of ef-

forts made to this point. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been of-

fered in both weaponry and financial assistance, in addition to sanctions targeting Russian oligarchs and businesses. Three-in-five (61%) say they approve of the way the government has responded, while 22 per cent disapprove and 17 per cent are unsure. Notably, vast majorities of past Liberal and NDP voters are joined by half (47%) of past Conservative voters in praising the government’s approach to the crisis.

That said, many say Canada should do more. Ukrainian officials have requested more weaponry and support in recent weeks, while others say the Canadian government has been slow to commit to offering much needed heavy weapons.

Two-in-five (38%) say this country has not done enough, the same number who say it has offered

about the right level of assistance.

More Key Findings: * Women over the age of 54 are the most likely to report doing something – donating, posting on social media, etc. – in support of Ukraine since the war began at three-infive. Meanwhile, two-thirds of men aged 18 to 34 years have kept their money in their wallet and socials free of Ukrainian flags. * One-in-five past Conservative Party voters (19%) say that Canada has done “too much” to help Ukraine and should do no more. Past Liberal (5%) and NDP (5%) voters are approximately four times less likely to say this. * Four-in-five Canadians (81%) say that they remain concerned about the possibility of a broader conflict involving Russia and western allies.

“This patient-centred approach addresses the practical aspects of cancer care, such as efficient scheduling of diagnostic and surgical procedures, but also the many complex psychosocial impacts of a lung cancer diagnosis. Over two years, we will closely evaluate wait times, length of hospital stays, re-admission rates and indicators of patient wellbeing, to identify learnings to improve other cancer programs in our region.”

Earlier screening coupled with surgical intervention has the potential to save the lives of many people diagnosed with this cancer. During 2020,

VANCOUVER Coastal Health (VCH) has launched Lung Evaluation and Assessment Program (LEAP) to improve the healthcare journeys of people diagnosed with lung cancer. LEAP, which will initially run as a two-year pilot at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), will employ a nurse navigator – a clinician with cancer care expertise – to support patients, families and caregivers through the treatment process.

Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of death in Canada. In 2021 alone, BC Cancer projects over 3,800 British Columbians were newly diagnosed with this cancer type.

“Receiving a lung cancer diagnosis is both an overwhelming and emotionally charged experience for many. Navigating their treatment pathway can be challenging, particularly during the

While there is a prospective surgical cure for people with early-stage lung cancer, many patients only receive treatment when the disease has advanced. This results in poorer outcomes and more complicated treatment.

“This project recognizes the toll a cancer diagnosis takes on patients and families, and partners them with support,” said Heath Minister Adrian Dix. “Better treatment outcomes and a recovery journey are the goal of the new LEAP project, where a nurse navigator is there every step of the way. You’re not in this alone—you have someone in health care to help.”

Previous studies have shown a nurse navigator provides a wide range of patient care benefits, including addressing psychosocial concerns and

ensuring timely access to clinical and diagnostic services. Research has also shown this role reduces healthcare costs by decreasing hospital re-admission rates following surgery.

“Nurse navigators put patients at the forefront, ensuring they retain control and empowering them to make informed decisions. B.C. Cancer is proud to have contributed to the early stage of this pilot and we look forward to learning from the findings and furthering our work, in partnership with health authorities across the province, to deliver patient-centred cancer care,” said Heather Findlay, Chief Operating Officer, B.C. Cancer.

The project was made possible as a result of a $1-million gift from Della and Stuart McLaughlin to VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation.

V.K. Bhawra Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Friday managed to crack the Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack case with Canada-based Lakhbir Singh alias Landa allegedly the key handler, who is accused of providing RPG, AK-47 and local network of criminals for logistic support to carry out the terror attack at Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters in Mohali on Monday evening.

Landa (33), who is native of Tarn Taran and fled to Canada in 2017, is a close aide of Pakistanbased wanted gangster Harvinder Singh alias Rinda and had joined hands with the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).

Punjab Director-General of Police VK Bhawra, while addressing a press conference at Punjab Police Headquarters here, said that the police have also arrested six persons for their involvement in planning and providing the local logistic support to the attackers for carrying out the attack.

Those arrested have been identified as Nishan Singh of village

Kulla in Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran; Jagdeep Singh Kang of Wave Estate in Sector 85, SAS Nagar; Kanwarjit Singh alias Kanwar Bath (40) of Gumtala in Amritsar; Baljinder Singh alias Rambo (41) of Patti, Tarn Taran; Baljit Kaur, alias Sukhi, (50) of Kot Khalsa, Amritsar, and Anant Deep Singh, alias Sonu, (32) of Guru Nanak Colony, Amritsar.

Two cars, including SUV Toyota Fortuner and Hatchback Maruti Swift has also been recovered from their possession. Earlier, the sleeve of the RPG was also recovered.

Pertinently, Nishan was arrested by the Faridkot police on May 11, 2022 in Arms Act case and he is on police remand till May 16, 2022.

The DGP said Landa took the help of Nishan and his other accomplice identified as Charat Singh of Khemkaran for carrying out RPG attack at the Intelligence HQs and being a local resident, Jagdeep helped Charat in conducting recce of the Intelligence Office on Monday morning. On Monday evening, Charat and his two aides, who are yet to be identified, had

carried out an RPG attack at the Intelligence HQs at about 7.42pm, he said.

DGP Bhawra said initially Charat had provided hideouts to two attackers and later, he handed over them to Nishan, who had arranged their stay at residence of Kanwarjit Bath and Baljit Kaur in Amritsar from April 27, 2022 to May 7, 2022.

Nishan had also retrieved RPG from the earmarked location on Kulla-Patti road on the directions of Landa, he added.

He said that Baljinder Rambo, who was arrested in NDPS cases and is a drug addict, had delivered the consignment of AK-47 to Charat and his two aides on the directions of Nishan. Anant Deep is a brother-in-law of Nishan and used to assist in providing logistic support, he said.

The DGP said the Punjab Police have been on manhunt to arrest Charat, who is serving a life sentence in a murder case and is out on parole, and his two accomplices. “Soon the trio attackers will be arrested,” he said.

He informed that the Police have also brought Mohd. Nasim Alam and Mohd. Sharaf Raj, both residents of Auraiya district in Bihar for questioning from Noida as they were found to be in touch with two unknown attackers.

Meanwhile, the FIR No. 236 dated April 9 had already been registered under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosive Substance Act at Police Station Sohana in SAS Nagar.

Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for sixth time Colombo, Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Thursday appointed former prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as head of government in a bid to restore stability in the island nation in the midst of a political impasse and stifling economic crisis.

This is the sixth time Wickremesinghe, 73, has been appointed Prime Minister — he has never finished a full term — and will have the task of arresting the devastating impact of the island’s economic downturn, that too under Gotabaya Rajapaksa who is fiercely detested by disgruntled citizens demanding his resignation.

Gotabaya’s older brother Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as Prime Minister on Monday, hours after his supporters violently attacked anti-government protesters. Wickremesinghe’s United National Party (UNP) was decimated in the 2020 general elections, in which the Rajapaksas secured a two-thirds majority. Wickremesinghe is currently the only member of Parliament from his party.

Although he lost the 2020 general elections, the UNP nominated him to legislature on the national list, through Sri Lanka’s propor-

Just ahead of the 2020 poll, Wickremesinghe’s former deputy Sajith Premadasa broke away from the UNP and formed the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB or United People’s Force), the main Opposition party now.

Wickremesinghe’s majority in Parliament is contingent on substantial support from the ruling party. Most of its members have promised to back him, according to political sources.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa too said he was willing to form a new government if the President committed to stepping down within “a minimum time frame”. Premadasa made his offer conditional, seeking new laws to strengthen parliament and abolish Executive Presidency.

Even before Wickremesinghe was sworn in by the President, some religious leaders objected to the move, contending that it was “not the solution” people want, and that it would further escalate the crisis.

Prominent Buddhist monk Omalpe Sobitha Thero said Ranil Wickremesinghe was “not suitable” for the job. His appointment “completely disregarded” the proposal made by their high-ranking monks to appoint an allparty interim government and was aimed at the “sole protection” of the Rajapaksas, he said.

Ranjith, was quoted by local media as saying, “People want a person with integrity, not someone who has been defeated in politics.”

The political opposition too expressed strong disapproval at the President’s choice.

Leader of the leftist Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Anura Kumara Dissanayake said: “Ranil protects the Rajapaksas, and the Rajapaksas protect Ranil. No citizen in this country will fall for their conspiracy this time.”

Tamil National Alliance lawmaker M.A. Sumanthiran said: “The President has completely lost legitimacy, people want him to go home, and the Parliament will soon vote on a motion expressing displeasure over him. Wickremesinghe had no legitimacy in the current Parliament right from the beginning. He did not even win in his constituency.”

The Parliament stands adjourned till May 17, when the vote on the President is scheduled to be taken up. Wickremesinghe may face a trust vote soon after. In order to continue as Prime Minister, he must show he has the confidence of the House.

Indian Penal Code (IPC), which decriminalises marital rape. On the other hand, Justice C. Hari Shankar upheld the validity of the controversial provision in rape law, saying it was based on “intelligible differentia”.

In view of the split verdict, the High Court has permitted the parties involved in the case to approach the Supreme Court over the issue. In India, marital rape is not defined in any statute or law. The petitioners, NGO RIT Foundation, All India Democratic Women’s Association and a marital rape victim, had challenged as unconstitutional an exception to Section 375 of the IPC, which defines rape.

The exception says sexual intercourse by a man with his wife aged 15 years or above is not rape even if it is without her consent.

In October 2017, the Supreme Court increased it to 18 years.

NGO Men Welfare Trust (MWT), which is opposing the batch of petitions seeking

criminalisation of marital rape, had argued that sexual intercourse between a husband and wife cannot be treated at a par with that in non-marital relationships as the issue of consent cannot be divorced from the context of a marriage.

While the first petition in the case was filed in 2015, the day-to-day hearing commenced in January this year after one of the petitioners mentioned the matter for final hearing.

The Centre had earlier in an affidavit, filed in 2017, said that criminalising marital rape “may destabilise the institution of marriage” and would become an easy tool for harassing husbands.

All eyes on Patnaik as BJP looks to close wafer-thin gap to elect next President Bhubaneswar (IANS): With the new President of India due to be elected in July this year, all eyes are on Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who alone can ensure a smooth victory for the BJP-led NDA candidate.

Currently, the Opposition parties collectively have a 51.1 per cent share of the Electoral College while the BJP and its alliance partners have 48.9 per cent. The NDA needs only 1.2 per cent to cross the halfway mark.

With 21 MPs (12 in the Lok Sabha and nine in the Rajya Sabha) and 113 MLAs in the Odisha Assembly, the BJD has 3.22 per cent of the votes. So, the BJD is going to play a crucial role during the presidential election.

Naveen Patnaik The BJD is yet to disclose its stand on the election for the top position in India. It will take a decision after the declaration of the candidates for the election.

“We are maintaining equidistant

from both the NDA and UPA. Our party president has already made it clear the decision will be based on the merit of the presidential candidate,” BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty told IANS. Though the ruling party in Odisha has not disclosed its cards, it had supported non-UPA candidates during the last two elections held in 2017 and 2012.

During the last presidential poll in 2017, Patnaik had supported NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind after receiving a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At that time, the BJD president had stated that the office of the President of India is above political considerations and the BJD wanted to keep it above politics.

Similarly, Patnaik was the first to

propose the name of PA Sangma for the presidential election held in 2012 against UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee. In September 2020, he had supported NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh in the election for the post of deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Besides, the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD has extended its direct or indirect support to the Modi government during the passage of several important Bills in Parliament. The BJD had also supported BJP nominee Ashwini Vaishnaw for his elevation to the Rajya Sabha. Vaishnaw is now serving as a cabinet minister in the Modi government.

Local political analysts feel that Naveen Patnaik is very likely to support the NDA candidate in the presidential poll as he supported the

Centre during several crucial times in the past few years.

“Naveen Patnaik is very approachable for the BJP in comparison to other non-UPA regional parties. So, the BJP may first approach Naveen, who is also very likely to extend his support to the central party for the presidential poll,” said senior journalist Rabi Das. It seems that there is some understanding between the BJD and the BJP. Though Naveen has a good relationship with other regional party leaders like Mamata Banerjee and M.K. Stalin, he never attended the anti-BJP political meetings called by them, Das said.

On the other hand, he said, the BJP’s top leaders are also not attacking the BJD government like they do the West Bengal government.

Indian-Americans plan to distance themselves from Indian government on Ukraine war Washington (IANS): Indian-Americans plan to issue a forceful denouncement of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in an attempt to shield themselves from the fallout of the Indian government’s continued refusal to condemn the war, which has drawn widespread scrutiny and criticism from within and out of US policy circles.

A bipartisan group of well-connected Indian-American political operatives are expecting to hold a seminar on Capital Hill on theme of “Indian Americans Against Genocide in Ukraine”, one of the organisers said. June 22 is the tentative date being considered and the event is likely to be headlined by a leading yoga guru and attended by many US lawmakers.

Indian-American speakers could include the four serving members of the US House of Representatives Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, Ro Khanna, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, all of whom have been extremely critical of the Russian invasion and both publicly and privately critical of India’s refusal to condemn it.

Politically-active Indian-Americans have been a key driver of the IndiaUS relationship. They helped soften American backlash against India after the 1998 Pokhran II nuclear tests and, most significantly, rallied US lawmakers to pass a legislation that ended India’s nuclear isolation in 2008.

They have stood with the Indian government of the day in a notable display of bipartisan solidarity with their country of origin. And Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been popular with both Republican and Democratic Indian Americans. Like most Americans, Indian-Americans have been horrified by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February and have been appalled by images of death and destruction coming out of the battle-ravaged country.

They have also watched with growing disquiet the Modi government’s refusal to condemn the invasion and bristle at having to “either defend it or

been obscured by India abstaining in critical UN votes on the war.

“What the Russian Army has been doing in Ukraine is downright genocide,” said Shekhar Tiwari, a Republican operative who is also chairman of the American Hindu Coalition. He has been a close associate of several top BJP leaders. “Being a Hindu and a son of a Gandhian, it is hard for me to stomach,” he added.

These Indian-Americans are careful not to criticize the Indian government and insist they only want to express their horror over situation in Ukraine, which they described as a “genocide”, as has US President Joe Biden.

They have been concerned about the blowback they are getting for India’s position on the war and believe a public denouncement of Russia will, one, make clear the community feels as revolted as the rest of the country.

And, two, that the community is “not in the pocket of the embassy”, as one these Indian-Americans put it.

Some Indian-Americans have also argued, since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, India needs to denounce

Moscow and finally pick a side that will be strategically more meaningful.

Ramesh Kapur, a Democratic strategist who worked closely with the presidential campaign of Biden, says India’s refusal to condemn the Russian invasion could be problematic should it need US assistance in a conflict with China. “If India gets into a situation with China, it can expect support from the US, but if the US thinks it cannot count on India they will have a problem,” he said, taking a tactical view of India’s position, as has been put forth by many US lawmakers.

Congressman Khanna told Fox News in March that he thinks India “ought to be condemning Putin” and “they need to realize, they have to pick sides”. He had added: “We, the United States, were with them when China invaded India. Putin wasn’t there.

And it’s time for them to buy weapons from the United States, not Russia. We’ve got to look at how we can facilitate that and make that easier.

We need India as an ally ultimately to contain China.”

Be patient as Punjab government works to generate jobs, says Mann

Chandigarh (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday asked the protesting youths to bear with the state government as it was sincerely working to complete the modalities so as to ensure that the entire recruitment process may not be stalled due to legal technicalities.

Addressing a gathering here to hand over appointment letters to 2,373 youths after launching a massive recruitment drive to fill 26,754 posts, he wished that such functions - to give appointment letters to the

youths - should be held regularly, adding the protesters should at least have patience and wait for some time to enable the government to complete the requisite formalities for issuing appointment letters.

Any action taken in haste for handing over appointment letters to the job aspirants protesting now could be in tight spot in case somebody challenges it in the court, he noted.

Taking a dig at the previous governments, Mann said: “What these governments had been doing in the last two months of their tenure is being

done by our government in the initial two months, which amply clears our intentions to provide jobs to the eligible candidates, purely on the basis of merit and their educational qualifications.”

Congratulating all those for getting job letters, he asked the ministers concerned to post them near their place of residence so that they could conveniently focus on the new assignment with utmost dedication and sincerity.

ees to far-flung places just to harass them, he claimed.

One held for pasting Khalistan flags in Himachal Assembly

Shimla (IANS): In a major achievement, the state police on Wednesday arrested Harvir Singh, a resident of Morinda in Punjab, in connection with the pro-Khalistan flags pasted at the entrance of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly in Dharamsala.

The police have tightened the security and sealed all interstate borders following the pasting of banners and painting graffiti of Khalistan on the outer boundary of the Vidhan Sabha on May 8.

The police have registered an FIR against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, General Counsel to the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).

Section 13 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) has been added to the First Information Report (FIR).

Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has described the incident as a cowardly act.

Supreme Court declines to entertain Majithia’s plea for quashing FIR New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to entertain a plea

Counsel representing the Punjab government said that Majthia’s bail plea has been rejected by the special court and also the high court. Majithia is currently lodged in Patiala jail after his bail plea was rejected.

submitted that the state government will not oppose, if the top court is directing the matter to be heard by the division bench of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Chandigarh (IANS): In a bid to combat the menace of drugs, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday directed the police officers to act in tandem with the Special Task Force (STF) to launch joint operations to nab the big sharks running the drug mafia.

Addressing a high-level meeting here, the Chief Minister categorically said in case any incident of drug supply comes to his notice from any part of the state, then the concerned Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) or the Commissioner of Police (CP) would be held solely accountable.

The Chief Minister also asked the police officers to immediately swing into action in case someone lodges any complaint about drug trafficking. He said no laxity would be tolerated for eradication of drug at any cost as its supply chain would have to be broken to save our youth who had fallen prey to drugs.

He called upon them to follow the ethos of ‘Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiyat’, thereby strengthening the bonds of brotherhood, peace and harmony instead of fuelling antisocial activities through such songs.

Chandigarh (IANS): Scenes of government school principals and teachers jostling to grab a plate for a free lunch after attending a meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in a plush resort in Ludhiana to improve the quality of education has gone viral.

2022 Mazda MX-5 GS-P

Auto review by Veeno Dewan The world’s bestselling roadster doesn’t have many competitors under the $40,000 price point and continues to be the Apex predator when it comes to full on- road open top fun. It’s the ultimate affordable roadster. Not much new for the 2022 Mazda MX-5 apart from brake-based torque vectoring for the inside rear wheel on the base model.

The gorgeous two -seater comes in two versions with a black soft top roof you can pull up or down with one hand. Or there is the uber-cool RF (Retractable Fastback) version with a power hard top that opens with the push of a button in 13 seconds.

Power is courtesy of a 181 horsepower SKYACTIVE 2.0-liter fourcylinder engine developing 7,000 rpm and 151 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Maximum engine speed is 7,500 rpm and torque has been increased from low to high engine speeds, with faster response times for the engine.

The transmission is either a sixspeed manual gearbox or a sixspeed automatic tranny. The MX-5 range starts with the GS Model at $33,300, GS-P at $37,300 and the top GT model at $40,300 plus destination and taxes.

The as tested GS-P arrives in the convertible format with black cloth upholstery with grey stitching. Its speedy bits for the manual equipped version include : Bilstein sports dampers, limited-slip differential, and front strut tower brace for better cornering and handling.

The optional Sport Package also adds performance Brembo front brakes, 17-inch forged BBS wheels, and sporty Recaro seats for the much- needed grip and bolstering when cornering.

Two average-sized adults will feel snug and comfortable in the cozy cabin. The MX-5 interior highlights include simple legible gauges and well-designed ergonomic controls that remains true to its roots with the focus on being a driver’s car.

Interior storage is tight, this being a small narrow roadster - there are two removable cupholders, a small center console/arm rest and

a cubby hole under the bottom of the center stack that can take a phone or wallet. Sadly, the trunk is miniscule at only 121L cargo capacity. Take soft squishy bags!

The driving experience is so pure in the MX-5, that even novice drivers can carve corners with precision and skill. The steering is light and very responsive with excellent feedback. It’s the epitome of point and shoot driving. The formula is delightfully simple and works. Beautifully engineered handling, a rewarding six-speed manual and a responsive four-cylinder engine providing adequate power all works. Enough said.

The six-speed manual transmission’s clutch is weighty only to a point as to give the driver feedback while the shifter almost effortlessly “snicks” from one cog to another.

The sense of speed is what matters most in a Mazda MX-5. This

For 2022 the Forte arrives with a refreshed exterior comprising of revised front and rear bumpers, a new grille, updated exterior lighting elements, and new wheel designs. Acceleration is lively and quick and there is the option of using sport mode for quicker reflexes.

Kia’s fuel consumption estimates for the Forte are 8.8/6.1 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 2.0L engine and six-speed manual transmission, and 7.9/5.9 L/100 km with the 2.0L/CVT combo. The 1.6L turbo and its seven-speed double clutch transmission is rated for 8.7/6.6 L/100 km (city/ highway).

The Forte GT Line offers more performance and panache than base models and offers great value and standard equipment for the price. This version is even more refined with more tech and is a nice-looking car from any angle. The GTLine variant ($26,795) is available in sedan format only. Vancouver, BC: The British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) reports that a total of 8,939 residential unit sales were recorded by the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in April 2022, a decrease of 34.9 per cent from a record April 2021. The average MLS® residential price in BC was $1.065 million, a 12.9 per cent increase from $943,765 recorded in April 2021. Total sales dollar volume was $9.5 billion, a 26.5 per cent decline from the same time last year.

“Canadian mortgages have sharply increased, surpassing 4 per cent for the first time in a decade,” said BCREA Chief Economist Brendon Ogmundson. “With interest rates rising, demand across BC is now on a path to normalizing. However, given existing levels of supply, markets conditions remain tight.”

Flashy marketing deceives new mothers

THE global formula milk industry is huge and growing rapidly, at about US$55 billion and projected to reach US$110B by 2026. Aggressive and deceptive marketing by manufacturers is driving this growth. The World Health Organization (WHO) is ringing alarms. It charges the industry with using new digital marketing tactics to target pregnant women and new mothers with “personalized social media content that is often not recognizable as advertising.”

The Internet and smart phones are wonderful tools. But they can also be dangerous.

Women have breastfed babies since the beginning of time. Animals thrive without Big Pharma. Human babies do too.

The WHO says the digital onslaught by industry reaches 2.47 billion people. The intention is to plant concerns in the minds of new mothers that their natural breastmilk is insufficient. They set out to convince new mothers that they’re nutritionally uneducated and irresponsible if they choose traditional breast milk.

Dr. Francesco Branca, Director of the WHO Nutrition and Food Safety department, goes on the offence. He says, “The promotion of commercial milk formulas should have been terminated decades ago.” He adds, “That formula milk companies are now employing even more powerful and insidious marketing techniques to drive up their sales is inexcusable and must be stopped.”

What are the natural benefits that breast milk has always given babies? For one, mother’s milk transfers antibodies to build immunity against infection.

Ameae Walker, Professor of Biomedical Science at UC Riverside School of Medicine, explains that copies of these cells will provide immunity to the baby for life. Breastfeeding

protects mothers as well by reducing risk of breast and ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Apart from conveying immunity, extensive research shows that breastmilk offers increased long-term protection from a host of diseases. Breast-fed babies have less chance of developing ear, respiratory, and urinary infections. They are more resilient against bacterial meningitis, a serious condition that can lead to death. Breastfeeding decreases the risk of obesity, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, high blood pressure and heart disease.

While antibodies in breastmilk adjust to a growing baby’s evolving needs, manufactured formula is unchanging and has no antibodies. Instead, manufacturers add ingredients designed to foster good gut bacteria.

This may help protect babies from illness, but not to the same degree.

It has also been found that vitamins and minerals added to manufactured milk cause increased gas in babies and more constipation.

Bottle feeding affects mother-child bonding.

And formula fed babies have an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

Expectant mothers have reason for confidence, not trepidation, in their abilities to breastfeed babies. At best, it should be deemed unethical to market misleading information about baby formula. At worst, given the lifelong health consequences at stake, and the duty to care for society’s youngest and most vulnerable members, such marketing should be criminal.

There are, of course, circumstances in which formula is the right choice. These mothers should be supported, not shamed. It’s an obvious fact that many babies raised on formula have fared just fine. There are geniuses, concert pianists, gold-medal athletes, doctors, lawyers and every other professional among them.

But the economics of the formula milk industry is the problem. This industry should not be allowed to profit at the expense of parental confidence and children’s health – yet profit is precisely the boardroom mandate of these companies. Looked at another way, the total cost of formula feeding is estimated to be US$900-$3,000 per year. Those funds

would be better spent other ways.

It’s the WHO’s boring reports versus deceptive digital marketing. Not a good match-up.
