Canucks sign Arshdeep Bains of Surrey to entry level contract

RUPY Sidhu, daughter of Baljit Kaur Kondolay, 37, who was shot to death in her Langley driveway on April 19, 1998, is vehemently opposed to her mother’s killer, Sukhjit Singh Grewall, getting either work release or day parole.

Kondolay’s husband, Ajit Singh Grewall, and her stepson (Ajit’s son), Sukhjit Grewall, then 21, were convicted of first-degree murder in late October 2000 and were both sentenced in January 2001 to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 25 years.

Crown prosecutor Sean Madigan told the court that Baljit was shot at point-blank range “in the forehead, leaving a huge hole, then shot her in the ear.”

Ajit Grewall was still legally married to his previous wife when he wed Baljit, who came from a wealthy farming valley.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Selwyn Romilly called Kandolay’s murder “callous, cowardly and cold-blooded.” He said it was an act of “mindless violence and brutality.”

VANCOUVER Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced on Friday that the club has signed Surrey’s Arshdeep Bains to an entry level contract.

Bains, 21, has appeared in 55 games for the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this season collecting 82 points (30-52-82) and 46 penalty minutes. He leads the league in both points (82) and assists (52), becoming the first player of South Asian descent to lead the WHL in points.

This season, the 6’1”, 184-pound left winger collected 11 power play goals and 24 assists on the man advantage to help the Rebels boast the third-best power-play percentage in the league.

Arshdeep’s dad, businessman Kuldip Bains, was thrilled when he received the news on Friday morning. He told the VOICE: “It’s just amazing! I can’t believe this is happening! It’s great!’

He added: “I am very proud of him.

Kuldip said that there were a few teams that were interested in his son, but the family just heard about the Canuck’s contract on Friday morning.

“There’s nothing more special than playing on your home team,” he added.

“So, he’s so happy that it happened here and he’s with the Canucks and he’s very excited about that.”

Kuldip said: “He probably knew for a few days that something’s happening … and they [the Canucks] confirmed it this morning.”

My mother, Baljit Kaur Kondolay, was violently murdered on April 19th, 1998 in Langley, BC. Her bigamist husband Ajit Grewall, his son Sukhjit Grewall (shooter), and Sukhjit’s friend Sandeep “Sonny” Toor (driver of the car) were convicted of her murder. * Ajit and Sukhjit were both sentenced to life in prison for first degree murder, with no chance of parole for 25 years. They are currently serving sentences at Mission Institution in Mission, BC. Ajit is detained in medium security and Sukhjit in minimal security. * Sandeep “Sonny” Toor was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years for the lesser charge of second degree murder. He was granted full parole on April 10th, 2019 from Williams Head Institution and released into the Lower Mainland area.

Ajit coerced my mother to change her Last Will one month prior to the murder, leaving her entire estate to Ajit Grewall and leaving him sole beneficiary of her life insurance policies, while Ajit was still married to his first wife Manjit Grewall.

My family and I were informed by letter from the Correctional Services of Canada last week that Sukhjit Gerwall has submitted an Application for Work Release. We were also informed by another letter last night that he is scheduled for his Day Parole Hearing this coming July, 2022.

It is hard to believe that this 25 year parole ineligibility is nearing its end for Sukhjit, who will be given a second chance to live his life after he robbed my mother’s short life of 37 years. With this news, I have a heavy feeling of pain, sadness, and anger as my family and I continue to suffer a

life sentence of great loss and grief.

Our deep wounds are still raw and being reopened by these parole applications.

My Mother lost so much to live for: * Watching her two daughters grow into strong independent woman and missing out on the milestones of becoming a grandmother * Losing out on watching her siblings grow their own families who she dearly loved and to watch her parents age * Leaving behind her love for living and her many dear friends My Mother was a hard working single mother. She was the life of any gathering who supported her community.

Her life was taken brutally and violently.

Sukhjit Gerewall is a vicious and heartless murderer. He shot my innocent defenseless mother, while she was carrying groceries home. He shot her twice: once in the middle of the forehead and once near her ear.

He then took off with Toor to eat at a fast food restaurant. Sukhjit is a killer who the Parole Board of Canada may soon release to our communities, where we work hard to earn a honest living and raise our families.

As the voice of my Mother, I will do all that I can to create awareness of the impending release of a dangerous criminal. I need to prevent the premature release of murderers like Sukhjit and keep them behind bars as long as is necessary. My Mother’s murder is not his only of-

fence. Not even one year after the murder, he was convicted of various offenses arising out of a home invasion in Vancouver on November 17, 1999 . He resorts to violence. The release of Sukhjit will not be safe for our communities. He will most likely reoffend. His most deadly influence and twisted mentor is his father Ajit Grewall, who masterminded my Mother’s murder. Ajit will also be up for parole shortly. It is unknown if Sukhjit has renounced his circle of people living the gang life. Sukhjit is not remorseful. He did not plead guilty to my Mother’s murder; instead the Crown had to spend considerable resources, over two years, to prove his guilt. Mr. Justice S. Romilly described, at the sentencing, my Mother’s death: “The killing of Baljit and the way she was killed can only be described as callous, cowardly and cold blooded.

It was an act of mindless violence and brutality”.

My victim impact statements and this public plea may have a minimal impact on the decision makers of his parole application. However, I won’t allow Sukhjit to be released without letting him know that my family and I are watching this. We will make sure that public safety is not jeopardized.

We will oppose his application for parole and attend every single one of them. My Mother’s voice will be present. Her voice will not be silenced by the bullets that Sukhjit viciously shot into my mother.

India accidentally fires missile into Pakistan New Delhi (BBC): India says it accidentally fired a missile into Pakistan on Wednesday, blaming the incident on a “technical malfunction” during routine maintenance.

Delhi said it was “deeply regrettable” and expressed relief no one was killed.

Pakistan’s military said a “high-speed flying object” had crashed near the eastern city of Mian Channu and its flight path had endangered passenger

flights.

In a statement, India’s defence ministry said: “On 9 March 2022, in the course of routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile. The Government of India has taken a serious view and ordered a high-level Court of Enquiry.”

Islamabad warned Delhi to “be mindful of the unpleasant consequences of such negligence” and to avoid a

repeat. The object had been launched from Sirsa in Haryana state, it said.

Pakistan’s air force said the missile travelled at Mach 3 - three times the speed of sound - at an altitude of 12,000m (40,000ft) and flew 124km (77 miles) in Pakistani airspace before crashing.

“The flight path of this object endangered many national and international passenger flights both in Indian and

Pakistani airspace, as well as human life and property of ground,” said Pakistani military spokesman Major-General Babar Iftikharon Thursday.

On Friday, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said it had summoned India’s chargé d’affaires to complain about the incident.

Pakistan also urged India to share the findings of its investigation into what happened.

Surrey Vaisakhi parade cancelled again THE largest Khalsa Day (Vaisakhi) Parade in the world that draws in excess of 500,000 guests across cultures and religions to Surrey every year has once again been cancelled.

Dasmesh Darbar Gurdwara, the organizers of the annual day-long event that had been scheduled for April 23, said on Monday that they had made the difficult decision to announce the cancellation.

The gurdwara said in a statement: “The magnitude and planning of this event takes a full year to complete and given the tight turnaround between the constantly changing public health order restrictions being lifted and the scheduled date of the parade,

organizers did not feel they could responsibly honour the importance and magnitude of the event in this timeline.”

“We are a Sikh Gurdwara that operates through donations from the Sikh sangat (congregation) and we feel it would be irresponsible on our part to go forward at this time and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on deposits and expenditures in preparation for the event only to have sporadic and last minute changes to the public health orders in the future and be pushed to cancel the event later and lose donations which are for supporting important programs in our community,” said Dasmesh Darbar Gurdwara President Moninder

The annual Surrey Khalsa Day (Vaisakhi) Parade is a celebration of one of the most significant days in the Sikh calendar, the creation of the Khalsa in 1699.

Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA) celebrates International Mother Language Day ON February 27, Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA) celebrated its 19th Annual International Mother Language Day event on Zoom. Alongside active members of PLEA, supporters of Punjabi language joined from other parts of Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. For more than three hours, Dr. Kamaljit Kambo very eloquently led the program as MC, sharing beautiful poetry throughout the event.

The event began with Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Director, Steve Lewarne, recognizing we were on the unceded territory of the First Nations people. He confirmed KPU’s

commitment to continue to support the Punjabi language in partnership with the Deepak Binning Foundation. Balwant Singh Sanghera welcomed all guests and introduced the active members of PLEA, including Dr. Sadhu Binning, Paul Binning, Gurinder Mann, Rajinder Singh Pandher, Harman Pandher, Dayah Johal, Dr. Ranbir Johal, Dr. Kamaljit Kambo, Parabhjot Kaur, and Dr. Inder Mann. He briefly shared information about activities being led by PLEA and made an appeal to parents to enrol their children in Punjabi classes, so that Punjabi can be taught in additional schools.

trict, stressed they stand with the Punjabi community and support their efforts to teach Punjabi in schools. Dr. Sadhu Binning, Vice President of PLEA, emphasized that at times we fail to consider the positive initiatives happening to support Punjabi and become discouraged. He stressed that the work done by other organizations on this International Mother Language Day validates that Punjabis are concerned about issues related to their language. He also shared that we need to request changes to Canada’s federal policy regarding language, so that other languages besides English and French may be recognized.

Punjabi teacher Prabhjot Kaur shared details about the collaboration between L.A. Matheson school and the Dhahan family and discussed the annual youth prize competition. She highlighted that seven story writers are awarded $500 each, and the Punjabi stories are translated into English and French and published as a collection.

Dr. Gurnam Singh Dhillon from Toronto, Dalbir Singh from Edmonton, Sukhbir Singh Grewal from Calgary, Dr. Harjit Singh Grewal from Calgary/Edmonton, and Gurinder Mann from Vancouver participated in the panel discussion.

In addition to sharing details about their own efforts, these panelists discussed details about Punjabi teaching in their respective regions.

Through the discussion it became apparent that although the situation is different in every region, there are efforts being made in all areas. A shared concern that came to light was the fact that there appears to be a lack of interest among parents for their children to learn Punjabi. All panelists seemed to outline that as a collective we need

to undertake some initiatives to support Punjabi.

In response to a question asked by local radio host Navjot Dhillon, Balwant Singh Sanghera shared that there are meetings being arranged with MLA Jinny Sims and MP Sukh Dhaliwal to discuss matters related to Punjabi.

In the next part of the program, well known Pakistani poet, Tariq Malik, shared a poem about Punjabi. Then, students from throughout Canada shared poems, songs, and stories, demonstrating the promise of Punjabi in the next generation.

Students from Toronto included Sukhman Singh, Avneet Kaur, Gunreet Kaur and Azad. From Calgary: Nimrat Kaur Dharni, Keerat Kaur Dharni, Prabhroop Singh Mangat, and Sukhman Kaur Sidhu. From Vancouver (UBC): Shreya Bhatia, Preet King, Gurleen Heer, Gurkaran Dhillon, Tajdeep Sandhu, Karambir Dhaunsi, and Maneevak Bajaj.

In addition, Prabhjot Singh presented a song. As well as entertaining the guests, these presentations encouraged everyone about the growth and development of Punjabi.

In the end, Balwant Sanghera expressed appreciation to all guests, participants, and students.

He shared words of gratitude towards the media for their support. Additionally, he thanked parents and teachers who encouraged their students and children to participate in the program, in particular, Surjit Kaur from Toronto and Sukhvir Singh Grewal from Calgary. In closing, he expressed thanks to the MC for the program, Kamaljit Kambo.

B.C. lifts mask mandate, vaccine passport ends April 8 AS of Friday, March 11, B.C.’s indoor mask order was repealed along with eased restrictions on long-term care visitors, faith gatherings and overnight camps for children and youth.

Thursday’s announcement also set a pathway to lift additional COVID-19 restrictions, including the BC Vaccine Card requiring proof of vaccination, on April 8.

“British Columbians have made tremendous sacrifices and worked hard to do their part over the past two years by following the advice and direction of Dr. Henry,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health.

“Thanks to high levels of vaccination, decreasing transmission enabled by British Columbians’ resolve and the public health orders we’ve had in place, we are now able to lift more restrictions and continue moving forward as a province.”

Effective March 11 at 12:01 a.m., the following changes were made to public health orders: * Face coverings order: Face coverings will be optional for people in all indoor public settings. People may want to continue wearing a mask based on personal choice. * Individual businesses and organizations can choose to continue to require mask wearing on their premises. * Gatherings and events for faith

Photo: BC Government gatherings: The requirement of faith communities to restrict attendance based on vaccination status is no longer required. * Indoor common area mask requirements for employees as part of the Workplace Safety Order will no longer be required. Employers may choose to continue to require wearing masks for operational reasons or in certain settings. * Overnight camps for children and youth order requirements: COVID-19 safety plans are no longer required to be submitted to a medical health officer for overnight camps. * Masks are encouraged on public transit and BC Ferries but are

no longer required under public health order.

Changes are also coming to B.C.’s long-term care facilities. By March 18, the number of visitors to longterm care facilities will no longer be restricted as long as visitors are fully vaccinated and screened.

Some facilities will be able to implement these changes earlier. Visitors should check with their local care home.

“Vaccines are the primary tool in our toolbox for managing COVID-19 in the long term and people have stepped up in a big way to get vaccinated, which has made a huge difference in creating high levels of immunity and protection across

the province,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer. “As we move through this transition period and lift restrictions, we encourage people to respect the comfort levels of those around them.”

COVID-19 guidelines are being adjusted to advise that mask use is no longer required when K-12 students return from spring break.

zations can choose to continue to require the BC Vaccine Card proof on their premises. * The remainder of the Workplace Safety Order will be lifted, which means businesses will transition back to communicable disease plans to reduce risk of all communicable disease. * The requirement for students residing in residence to be fully vaccinated under the Post-secondary Institution Housing COVID-19 Preventative Measures Order will be repealed.

Vaccinations remain the primary layer of protection that has limited severe health outcomes from COVID-19. As of March 10, 93.3% (4,322,690) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 90.7% (4,204,895) received their second dose and 55.7% (2,580,562) have received a third dose.

B.C. has also increased the supply of rapid tests, helping people monitor and manage mild COVID-19 symptoms at home.

The Province, the Provincial Health Officer and the BCCDC will continue to monitor and provide updates on the COVID-19 pandemic in B.C. An update will be provided in the coming weeks about the daily information bulletin moving from daily to weekly reporting.

Mask mandate lifted for Metro Vancouver transit IN alignment with provincial health orders, masks are no longer mandatory on most TransLink services. This change is consistent with the Provincial Health Officer’s decision on Thursday to repeal the public health order requiring masks in public spaces from Friday.

TransLink said its customers and employees are welcome to continue wearing masks on-board transit vehicles and at transit stations, depending on their own level of comfort.

India-Canada Early Progress Trade Agreement a step in the right direction: Surrey Board of Trade MARY Ng, federal Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, and Piyush Goyal, Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs and Food, and Public Distribution and Textiles, on Friday co-chaired the fifth Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) in New Delhi in which they committed to bolstering trade, investment and further strengthening the bilateral relationship by formally re-launching the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations.

Both sides agreed to consider an interim Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) that could be concluded early as a transitional step towards the CEPA. “The Surrey Board of Trade is pleased with the positive outcomes from the Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment as a pathway towards a free trade agreement between Canada and India,” said Anita Huberman, President and CEO, Surrey Board of Trade.

“This free trade agreement is important to decrease or remove costly and time consuming trade barriers to accelerate the movement and

textiles, automobiles, energy, electronics, minerals and metals, urban development, information technology and tourism. * The need for a comprehensive trade agreement between the two countries that would help in bolstering trade, investment and further strengthen the bilateral relationship, the Ministers agreed to formally re-launch the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations. * Both sides agreed to consider an interim agreement or Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) that could be concluded early as a transitional step towards the CEPA. * EPTA shall include high level commitments in goods, services, rules of origin, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, and dispute settlement, and may also cover any other areas mutually agreed upon. * Canada and India agreed to promote and protect bilateral investment, including through the intensification of negotiations toward a Bilateral Investment Agreement, while considering options to achieve this goal alongside CEPA. * India will consider to allow the import of pulses without penalty

in case of fumigation on arrival by Methyl Bromide (MBr) until finalization of a systems approach for Canadian pulses. * Canada also agreed to examine expeditiously the request for Conformity Verification Body (CVB) status to APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) for facilitating Indian organic export products. * Pulses, sweet corn, baby corn, Canada, cherries and lumber market access was discussed * Cooperation in the public health sector was discussed such as the supply of pharmaceutical products. * Commitments to WTO practices were reaffirmed. * COVID-19 testing regulations eased by Canada for Indian travellers was welcomed.

“The discussions were fulsome and aligned with the advocacy efforts of the Surrey Board of Trade. As geopolitics and domestic policy for traditional trading partners shifts, we must be able to rely on other nations through mutually beneficial trade agreements. We look forward to examining the EPTA, and facilitating trade networks between local businesses and businesses in India,” said Huberman.

Thai police will oppose bail for Jimi Sandhu’s alleged killer THAI Police will oppose bail for Matthew Dupre, one of the two alleged killers of Indian gangster Jimi Sandhu, who was gunned down in Rawai, Phuket, on February 4.

Dupre was arrested in Edmonton, Alberta, on February 20, and is being held in detention by the Alberta court, pending a decision on Thailand’s extradition request.

Bangkok Post reported on Monday that Police Colonel Wirachan Khunchaikaew, chief investigator, said that documents for extradition are on their way to Canada.

Thai police will ask the Canadian court to refuse bail to Dupre for fear that he will abscond. Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) Commissioner Police Lt-General Jirabhop Bhuridej said police are determined to have the suspect extradited to stand trial in Thailand, Bangkok Post reported.

The newspaper said that sources said that Dupre’s extradition is expected in April. “The crime showed links to organised crime syndicates and the suspects had planned their escape well. They fled to Europe before travelling to

Canada. War weapons also were used in the attack,” the source told Bangkok Post.

28 significant projects worth $428 million keep pace with Surrey’s growing needs WITH Surrey growing at an unprecedented rate, City Council has prioritized new capital infrastructure projects that will ensure the recreational, cultural and road travel needs of its citizens will keep pace with the City’s growth.

At Monday night’s Regular Council meeting, Surrey City Council received an update on the $428 million committed to capital projects.

“Twenty-eight significant projects are part of this sweeping capital program that will ensure the quality of life in Surrey is not only maintained but improved on,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum on Tuesday.

“Surrey City Council has ensured the funds collected from the Capital Parcel Tax have gone to exactly what it was created for.

The projects of the Surrey Invests program will add new and improved recreational facilities, arenas, sports fields, parks, and arts and culture amenities. I am proud that we have been able to make good on this comprehensive plan that will benefit the residents of Surrey both now and well into the future.”

Major road improvements announced for Surrey SurreY Mayor Doug McCallum on Thursday night announced the widening of 132 Street from two to four lanes – two lanes on each side – from 108 Avenue all the way to Highway 10.

January is fourth consecutive month in which over 200 lives were lost to illicit drug supply in B.C. AT least 207 British Columbians were lost to toxic illicit drugs in January 2022, according to preliminary data released by the BC Coroners Service.

“The new year has started with the loss of 207 more British Columbians to the toxic illicit drug supply in our province,” said Lisa Lapointe, chief coroner. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the many families grieving the loss of a loved one in communities large and small. As we near the six-year anniversary of the declaration of B.C.’s public health emergency into substance-related harms, it is clearer than ever that traditional approaches to substance use are hurting people and costing lives. I am hopeful that the recent recommendations made by the Coroners Service Drug Toxicity Death Review Panel will support the meaningful change underway in our province and an end to this tragic crisis.”

January is the fourth consecutive month in which more than 200 lives were lost to the illicit drug supply in B.C. The 207 deaths are the third highest recorded in a calendar month, an average of about 6.7 deaths per day.

While illicit drug toxicity death rates remain high throughout the province, there have been notable increases in smaller and medium-sized communities. The 11 recorded deaths in Kamloops in January made it the third most affected township in B.C. behind only Vancouver and Surrey. And the 19 deaths recorded in Northern Health equates to a death rate of 74.5 per 100,000 residents, by far the highest rate of any health authority.

Post-mortem toxicology results underscore the increased volatility and toxicity of the illicit drug supply. Between November 2021

January were Vancouver, Surrey and Kamloops. * By health authority in 2022, the highest number of illicit drug toxicity deaths were in Fraser and Vancouver Coastal Health Authorities (70 and 57 deaths, respectively), making up 61% of all such deaths during this period. * By health authority in January, the highest rates were in Northern Health (75 deaths per 100,000 individuals) and Vancouver Coastal Health (54 per 100,000). Overall, the rate in B.C. is 47 deaths per 100,000 individuals in

Lisa Lapointe and January 2022, approximately 23% of tests returned extreme levels of fentanyl (concentrations exceeding 50 micrograms per litre), compared to 13% of results between April 2020 and October 2021. Both Northern Health (29%) and Vancouver Coastal Health (27%) had averages that exceeded the average for the province.

“We know that illicit substances in our province are toxic and that those dependent on them are vulnerable to serious harms and death,” Lapointe said. “Ensuring access to safer supply, establishing a substance use system of care, and turning the focus away from punishing and stigmatizing are critical steps to resolving this public health emergency.”

Male shot in Guildford home in Surrey ON Thursday at 11:30 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of shots fired in the area of 14100-block and 104 Avenue. Frontline officers located a male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in a home.

Surrey RCMP General Investigations Unit has conduct of the investigation. Officers were in the area collecting evidence, including CCTV footage. The investigation is still in the early

stages and a motive has not been determined.

Charges in 2018 homicides of Alfred Wong, 15, and Kevin Whiteside, 23, announced A four-year Vancouver Police investigation has led to charges in the 2018 double murder that took the life of 15-year-old Alfred Wong, Vancouver Police Chief Constable Adam Palmer announced on Wednesday.

“This was a long and complex investigation, which took some of VPD’s most experienced homicide investigators across the country to secure and gather evidence,” said Palmer while announcing charges against Kane Carter for the January 2018 deaths of Wong and 23-yearold Kevin Whiteside.

The VOICE was the first to announce about the charges and Carter’s arrest online.

“Investigators interviewed hundreds of witnesses and processed thousands of exhibits. And while it has taken more than four years to arrive here, I was always confident this day would come,” said Palmer.

Wong was a young athlete and a promising student on the night of

January 13, 2018, when he was struck by a stray bullet while riding in the back of his parents’ car.

He was critically injured and died days later in hospital. Whiteside was also killed in the shooting.

VPD investigators have long believed that Whiteside, who was

involved in gang life, had come to the area that night to shoot a rival who was having dinner at a restaurant near Broadway and Ontario Street, in Mount Pleasant. Gunfire was exchanged on the street as the Wong family passed by the restaurant in their car. A stray bul-

let entered the vehicle and struck Alfred.

(The VOICE had reported that investigators believe that Whiteside was in the area to allegedly kill 28-year-old Vancouver resident, Matthew Navas-Rivas, who was at the Indochine restaurant with a female companion. As the two left the restaurant, another person opened fire. The gunfire led to the deaths of Whiteside and Wong.

Navas-Rivas was unharmed that night, however, he was murdered in an unrelated incident, months later, on July 15, 2018 in Vancouver.)

Following an exhaustive investigation, Vancouver Police formally arrested Carter in Ontario on Tuesday.

Carter, 26, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, and one count of aggravated assault for the shooting of a third person, who was not seriously injured. He is also charged with

discharging a firearm with the intent to injure Whiteside. “I’d like to acknowledge the Wong family and thank them for their patience throughout this investigation. This has been an incredibly difficult time in their lives,” said Palmer.

“I hope this arrest will bring them some sense of peace.”

Palmer also has a strong message for anyone engaged in gang life or criminal activity: “Your actions have consequences. On January 13, 2018, those actions resulted in the death of a promising young man and forever changed a family that loved him very much.

“This arrest, coming more than four years later, should serve as a warning. No matter how long it takes, no matter what stands in our way, the men and women of the Vancouver Police Department will never stop their relentless pursuit of the truth, evidence, and accountability for those who commit violent crimes.”

SURREY RCMP said on Thursday morning that the the Surrey Police Service (SPS) officer injured on duty on Wednesday night has been released from hospital and is recovering at home.

On March 9 at 6:09 p.m., Surrey RCMP, Surrey Police Service and Car 67 responded to a disturbance inside a residence in the 12300-block of 99A Avenue. During the course of an arrest, a Surrey Police Service Officer suffered non-life-threatening stab wounds. Surrey RCMP officers rendered first aid to the injured officer while awaiting the arrival of BCEHS. The officer was transported to hospital and has since been released.

Officers are receiving assistance to debrief from this critical incident including offers of psychological services and peer-to-peer support, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer Constable Sarbjit K. Sangha said.

A 27-year-old woman was taken into police custody and apprehended under the Mental Health Act. She is currently in hospital being assessed. The women also had an outstanding arrest warrant for mischief from an unrelated matter.

Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit has taken conduct of the investigation. Charges have not been laid in relation to the incident that occurred last night as the investigation is in the early stages.

“Regardless of the uniform worn, my priority as the Officer in Charge of Surrey is the safety and wellbeing of all officers serving this city,” said Surrey RCMP Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards. “I have reached out to [SPS] Chief [Norm] Lipinski to express my concern and support for the injured officer and everyone else at Surrey Police Service who are feeling the impacts of this traumatic event.”

THE Province said on Thursday that it is responding to the crucial need for more healthcare workers and early childhood educators (ECEs).

Changes will be implemented for the B.C. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Skills Immigration stream that prioritizes these occupations and increases support for the care economy.

“We’re taking steps to ensure the Provincial Nominee Program is meeting the needs of British Columbians today and into the future,” said Nathan Cullen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “By placing a greater focus on skilled workers in the care economy, we’re

helping attract talent from around the world committed to delivering the essential services we all rely on.”

The B.C. PNP Skills Immigration stream supports employers to meet their workforce needs and complements B.C.’s Economic Plan and is a key pillar of the StrongerBC Economic Plan to tackle inequality and grow an economy that works for everyone. These changes prioritize health-care workers and ECEs in the application process and will increase the number of people nominated in these occupations for permanent residence.

Overlooked: Canada’s Fastest-Emerging, Highest-Educated Workforce New study finds South Asian women twice as likely to say they are treated unfairly in the workplace, with almost 60 per cent ready quit their jobs Toronto: Ahead of International Women’s Day, a newly released study is shedding light on the reasons South Asian women have the highest unemployment rate in Canada and what employers can do to unlock the potential of this growing labour force. The report, released today, reveals that more than half (57 per cent) of South Asian women are planning to leave their jobs for other opportunities. That is more than any other female group in Canada and 19 per cent more than the average of all the females surveyed.

The study also noted that South Asian women are twice as likely to report unfair treatment in the workplace: 34 per cent compared to the 17 per cent average of all females surveyed and 20 per for all the men surveyed.

The findings are significant considering that over the next five years 100 per cent of Canada’s labour force growth will be from immigration. Especially given that in 2018 newcomers from South Asia and the Philippines comprised almost 39 per cent of all newcomers in Canada (Immigration Refugees, and Citizenship Canada).

South Asian women are also the largest female immigrant labour force and the highest educated, according to the 2016 Census.

The study follows a 2020 Statistics Canada report which discovered that South Asian women have almost twice the national unemployment rate (20.4 per cent compared to 11.3 per cent). They are also more likely to be both underemployed and underpaid compared to non-visible minority women.

Other findings include: •The pandemic has exacerbated challenges facing South Asian women, with 47 per cent they considering leaving the workforce altogether due to the pandemic – compared to the 25 per cent for women and 32 per cent for men in general.

•South Asian women are most likely (64 per

cent) to admit that they have lowered their career salary expectations in the last few years, compared to the 50 percent average of all females surveyed and 45 per cent for all men surveyed.

•58 per cent reveal empty promises made by work managers about their career progression, compared to the 46.5 per cent of all females surveyed, and almost double when compared to non-racialized women (37 per cent). Furthermore, 65 per cent would rather leave their job than wait in vain for those empty promises to come into fruition.

Nevertheless, the study also reveals the resilience of South Asian women, who remain committed to professional growth: •71 per cent feel there is room for upward mobility and 66 per cent currently feel empowered in the workplace, the highest percentages of any female ethnic group and even higher than the 63 per cent average among all men surveyed.

Important contrasts within the study suggest that South Asian women born in Canada, and those already established in this country face different obstacles and will need distinct supports to succeed. Established South Asian women, for example, can be role models of the future but say they first need mentorship to break through the glass ceiling. This group is also more likely to have confidence in their abilities and be prepared to change employers if they don’t get the supports they need. Meanwhile, newcomers are more concerned with being effectively integrated into the workforce and acknowledge that they are struggling to settle into corporate Canada.

The research focuses on career focused South Asian women and has been conducted by CulturaliQ in partnership with Pink Attitude, the first non-profit organization of its kind in Canada where women of South Asian heritage are empowered to achieve

their full potential in their chosen fields. It consists of a qualitative component, including interviews with employers, employees and community leaders for South Asian women and will be followed by quantitative online surveys.

On this International Women’s Day, I remember these teachings as I acknowledge the inequality faced by women and girls, and celebrate the steps we are taking, to do better.

When our lives were disrupted by the pandemic, a disproportionate amount of household and caregiving responsibilities were assigned to women. While spending more time at home to slow the spread of COVID, many women— especially Indigenous women, women of colour, immigrant women, and women with disabilities—experienced increased rates of gender-based violence. They are not the only ones in our communities who are hurt on the basis of their gender. Gender-diverse people, including Two-Spirit and non-binary people, have long fought alongside women for gender equity and justice. This International Women’s Day, and every day, our government is joining that fight with all the revo-

Two youth approached by South Asian males in Delta DELTA Police say that on Monday, March 7, they responded to a report of a suspicious circumstance that had occurred earlier in the day at approximately 4:37 p.m.

Two youth were approached in the 11300-block of 81 Avenue in North Delta by two males in a van. The youth were offered candy by the males and asked to get into the vehicle. Both youth ran away and told their parents.

The vehicle is described as an older silver or champagne coloured minivan with a green “N” on the back. Possible partial B.C plate of “LK”.

The driver and the passenger were South Asian males, wearing black and navy bandana-style head coverings.

Although there have been no other incidents of this nature reported, Delta Police are re-

Surrey RCMP investigating indecent acts near Newton school SURREY RCMP announced on Wednesday that they are investigating the report of multiple indecent acts by the same person near a Newton school.

On March 2, Surrey RCMP received a report of a man exposing and touching himself in the bushes near Princess Margaret Secondary School.

The man was observed in a wooded area to the south (rear) of the school property by a student in the morning before classes began.

Although this is the first report to police, the sus-

pect was observed in the same area, doing the same thing on three separate occasions in 2022 and once in 2021. All incidents occurred in the morning between 8:20 to 8:30 a.m. The investigation is ongoing and police are liaising with a forensic sketch artist.

The suspect is described as South Asian, 30-40 years old, medium complexion, dark hair, 5’10, average build, with facial stubble and a moustache.

Nanaimo couple lost almost $400,000 in lotto scam THE Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a scam in which a Nanaimo couple lost almost $400,000 in a Readers Digest Sweep Stakes Mega Millions lotto scam.

The scam started in early 2021 when the couple, who are both in their late 80’s, answered a phone call. The caller said he was working for Readers Digest and that he was calling to notify them that they had won $18.5 million, and a Mercedes-Benz. He told them that in order to receive their winnings, they must first pay a “few” administrative fees.

Several days later they received official looking documents in the mail from what appeared to be the Internal Revenue Service. The documents indicated they owed taxes on their winnings, and that they were directed to contact

Mega Millions in order to arrange payment.

Every week the scammers faithfully called and directed them to make payments by cash, through money orders, in order to pay the outstanding taxes on the winnings, and to cover the storage fees of the Mercedes-Benz. Bank drafts were drawn and delivered by mail to various addresses. Throughout the year, the couple made cash payments of almost $400,000.

“The financial loss the couple experienced is significant and is certainly one of the largest we have seen in Nanaimo. It also goes to shows that if fraudsters believe they have convinced you of their legitimacy, they will not stop until essentially there is no more money to give or you figure out it is a scam,” said Constable Gary O’Brien.

OBITUARY SARDARNI GURDEV KAUR BAL IT is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Sardarni Gurdev Kaur Bal, who passed away on March 1, 2022, at the age of 92 at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of late S. Munsha Singh Basra and the late Sdn. Niranjan Kaur Basra. She was born in Phagwara, Mohala Aratiya District Kapurthala. She received her early education in Phagwara and in 1952 completed her Giani and in 1953 completed her J.B.T. In 1946, she married her husband the late S. Sarbjit Singh Bal (from Sathiala), and had 4 children, 1 daughter – Avinash Kaur Chahal – and 3 sons – the late S. Bhupinder Singh Bal, S. Harinderpal Singh Bal, and S. Nirlaip (Paul) Singh Bal. She worked as a teacher for over 20 years, impacting the lives of every student and family she met. On March 1, 1979, she took an early retirement to move to Canada with her family to create a better life. In 1979 she moved to Surrey, BC, and worked towards providing a bright future for the generations to come.

She was passionate about education and music. She enjoyed playing the dholki and singing folksongs. She was an active member of the Surrey-Delta Indo-Canadian Seniors Society.

She is survived by her sons, daughter, 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was truly the greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. Her presence, her love, warm energy and charismatic smile will be greatly missed.

Her funeral will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Valley View Funeral Home, 14644 72nd Avenue, Surrey.

Single-car fatal collision in Vancouver VANCOUVER Police are investigating a single-car collision that killed at 27-yearold driver from Maple Ridge on Saturday morning, and ask anyone with information to come forward.

Investigators believe the collision occurred around 2:25 a.m. on Saturday as the driver was heading east on Terminal Avenue in a black Chrysler 200. He somehow lost control and collided with a con-

crete SkyTrain pillar.

Efforts to save the man’s life were not successful and he died on scene.

VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit is looking into whether speed and alcohol were factors. Anyone with information, including people who saw the vehicle prior to the collision or has dash-cam video, is asked to contact investigators at 604-7173012.

Punjab’s next chief minister Bhagwant Mann with AAP Leader Arvind Kejriwal.

THE resounding victory of the Aam Aadmi Party (APP) in Punjab positions AAP Leader Arvind Kejriwal, who is also the Chief Minister of Delhi, as the biggest challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in many ways.

First of all, Punjab has been a huge challenge for Modi and Kejriwal is shrewd enough as well as experienced enough to keep Modi on his toes. It will be interesting to see how AAP deals with the farmers’ demands, the state’s economy, the drug problem, the various “mafias” and the Khalistani factor, especially because of the threat from across the Indo-Pak border.

Secondly, AAP will now be emboldened to be more ambitious nationally and will even try to gradually become the main opposition party to challenge the BJP’s dominance in a host of states.

Canada’s Punjabis will be keenly watching every move Kejriwal

and Bhagwant Mann, who will be the next chief minister of Punjab, make — and if and when either of them visits this country, he is sure to receive a hero’s welcome.

Both the Congress Party and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) were badly humiliated in Punjab — as was the alliance of former Congress chief minister Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress (PLC), the BJP and SAD (Sanyukt).

The Hindu newspaper said: “The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swept the polls winning 92 of the 117 Assembly seats. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal and former CM [Chief Minister] Amarinder Singh are among the heavyweights who lost. AAP CM candidate Bhagwant Mann won Dhuri seat by a margin of 58,206 seats, beating his closest rival and Congress MLA Dalvir Singh Goldy.”

“It is true that the BJP’s victory in U.P. is against the weight of history, and will have a resonance across the country and within the BJP’s organisational structure too, but it is still too soon to see him enter the circle of trust of the top two in the BJP - Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah as a possible third force.

Prime Minister Modi also waited out two terms that he won under his own steam, before making that move,” he noted.

“Party insiders say that while the U.P. win was very important, the fact that this is a 4-1 victory for the BJP, with governments set to be in place in Uttarakhand, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and possibly Goa, shows that Mr. Modi is still the biggest draw as far as voters are concerned, and that Mr. Shah’s tight control over the party organisation and election planning is still the mainstay of Central and Assembly elections.”

Poll mandate stamp of approval for BJP’s pro-poor governance: Modi

New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that the Assembly poll results are a stamp of approval for the BJP’s propoor and pro-active governance.

As per the assembly election results declared on Thursday, the BJP is all set to form the government in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur, while it is just one short of the majority mark in Goa. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has swept the polls with a thumping majority.

The Prime Minister also took a jibe at the poll pundits, saying that going by their logic, 2022’s results have paved the way for 2024 for the BJP. “Earlier, people needed to run from pillar to post for basic amenities such as gas, power, water etc. The common man was denied what was his entitlement, but now, in the BJP regime, we have understood

Narendra Modi and delivered this to the common man,” Modi said, as he was greeted by hundreds of BJP workers at the party headquarters here after the results for the Assembly elections

were declared.

Stating how over the last few years, his government has strengthened the governance delivery system and also brought in transparency in the process, Modi said, “The BJP has ensured that each and every poor man receives all the benefits that are due to him, and I will not rest till every single poor man gets his due.”

Modi recalled his more than two decades of “service for the people of Gujarat”, and said, “I know for sure the kind of problems one faces while running the government. I know the kind of troubles that one faces when running the government and I chose to translate it from the ramparts of the Red Fort by announcing the saturation of facilities to every single poor person in the country.”

It is possible only when one has honest methods, compassion towards the poor, and welfare of the poor as the priority, he said.

Modi also thanked the women voters, who, he claimed, “played a major role in BJP’s landslide victories”.

“We are blessed to get the blessings of women voters. It is the women voters who ensured BJP’s win across seats... They are the drivers of our victory,” the Prime Minister said.

“People ask me why don’t you care for your own safety while out in the field. I always say, ‘Why should I worry when I have the blessings of hundreds and thousands of mothers and sisters from India?’ This is because, for the first time, they are assured that our government takes care of their smallest needs,” Modi added.

Pointing out that the people of Uttar Pradesh were often looked at only through the lens of caste and by doing so, those people were insulting those castes, those people and also Uttar Pradesh, he said, “But the people of Uttar Pradesh have shown -- be it on 2014, 2017 or now -- UP always choses politics of development.”

The poorest of the poor from Uttar Pradesh taught this valuable lesson to the poll pundits that caste pride should not be used for breaking India, but for uniting the nation, Modi said, as he took a jibe at the poll pundits by saying, “They had said in 2019 when we returned to power that what is such a big deal, 2017 has sealed the fate for 2019. I am sure, they will now dare to say that the 2022 results have paved the way for 2024.”

All Badals, kin unseated by AAP’s greenhorns Chandigarh (IANS): All the Badals, led by fivetime Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the eldest candidate at 94 in fray for the 117-member Punjab Assembly, as well as their kin, on Thursday lost to AAP’s greenhorns.

The eldest Badal, who won the seat five times in a row since 1997, lost to Gurmeet Khuddian from Lambi by 11,357 votes, while his son and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and Member of Parliament Sukhbir Badal faced humiliating defeat from Jalalabad, and his son-in-law Adesh Partap Singh Kairon faced defeat from Patti in Tarn Taran district from AAP’s Laljit Singh Bhullar.

Sukhbir Badals’s brother-in-law Bikram Majithia and his estranged cousin Manpreet Badal, who was in the fray on a Congress ticket, also lost the poll from their respective seats.

As per the Election Commission, AAP’s Khuddian, a Congress rebel, was polled 65,717 votes and the elderly Badal got 54,360.

The junior Badal has lost the elections by a margin of 23,310 votes from Jalalabad to AAP’s Jagdeep Kamboj.

Majithia, who was in the fray from Amritsar (East) seat, took the third spot, with 25,112 votes.

His archrival and state Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu also suffered a loss in his seat, gar-

nering only 32,807 votes.

Both senior leaders were defeated by AAP’s novice Jeevan Jyot Kaur, who received 39,520 votes.

A five-time MLA and two-time Finance Minister, Manpreet Badal, who is the son of Gurdas Badal, the younger brother of Parkash Badal, lost the elections from Bathinda Urban.

He first won in 1995 on a SAD ticket from Gidderbaha and retained the seat in 1997, 2002, and 2007. He quit the party in 2010 and floated his own political outfit, People’s Party of Punjab.

In 2016, Manpreet Badal merged his outfit with the Congress, after having lost from both Gidderbha and Maur seats. He then won the 2017 elections as a Congress candidate from Bathinda.

“We whole-heartedly and with total humility accept the mandate given by Punjabis. I am grateful to lakhs of Punjabis who placed their trust in us and to SAD-BSP workers for their selfless toil.

We will continue to serve them with humility in the role they have assigned to us,” Sukhbir Badal tweeted.

However, Sukhbir Badal had been categorically saying the Badal family had no connections with Manpreet Badal and the party’s interests were supreme to them. Even Manpreet Badal had clarified that he had ended all his family ties with the Badal family 11 years ago.

Snapping over two-decade long ties, the Akali Dal pulled out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in September 2020 after sharp differences emerged over the three controversial farm laws.

The Congress, which was out of power in Punjab for a decade (2007-17), got 77 seats in the 2017 Assembly elections after drubbing the Akali DalBJP combine.

At that time, the elder Badal had won the Assembly elections from Lambi by defeating Congress candidate Amarinder Singh by 22,770 votes.

36 Muslims make it to 18th UP Assembly Lucknow (IANS): In a seemingly polarised electoral atmosphere that saw a straight contest between the ruling BJP and Samajwadi Party (SP), voters have sent 36 Muslim candidates to the 18th Uttar Pradesh Assembly, two more than the previous Assembly.

The newly elected MLAs account for 8.93 per cent of the total 403 legislators in a state that has a Muslim population of over 20 per cent.

AAP’s oath-taking of Punjab cabinet in Bhagat Singh’s ancestral village Chandigarh (IANS): After the historic victory of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, Bhagwant Mann on Thursday said the oath-taking of the state’s new cabinet would be held in martyr Bhagat Singh’s ancestral village.

The party insiders blame the wrong strategy, wrong ticket distribution and last minute entrants from the BJP for the loss in the elections.

Owaisi terms UP results as victory of ‘80-20’ Hyderabad (IANS): AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday termed the results of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections “victory of 80-20” and predicted that this atmosphere will continue in Indian democracy for many years.

The Hyderabad MP, whose party contested 100 Assembly seats but drew a blank, was obviously referring to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s remark of “80 per cent versus 20 per cent”.

Owaisi said though the results were not to the party’s expectations, it would continue to work in the state.

“We tried hard. The results are not to our expectations but we will work harder by overcoming the weakness. I hope that our party will have a good future in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.

Stating that their spirits remained high, Owaisi said the party would also contest Assembly elections in Gujarat, Rajasthan and other states.

He said MIM had many objectives and one of them was to develop political leadership. He also stated that the results showed that minorities of Uttar Pradesh were used as a vote bank.

He thanked people of Uttar Pradesh who voted for his party. He also thanked party’s state leaders and leaders from other states who worked in Uttar Pradesh and advised them not to lose heart.

Hitting out at Samajwadi Party (SP), he said some political parties were speaking about tampering of EVMs to hide their failures. “I had said in 2019 that there is no fault in EVM. It’s the chip which has been put into the minds of people,” he said in an obvious reference to communal polarisation.

He said the SP and other parties were making tall claims of vote transfer but nothing has happened. The MP said when he had stated that the alliance led by the SP will not be able to defeat BJP, they had criticised him.

“We are not bothered about these allegations.

They have been saying this for a long time,” Owaisi said when asked to react to allegations by the opponents that he came to UP to help the BJP win the elections.

Citing BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s famous statement “pehla election harna, doosra harana aur teesra jeetna (lose the first and second elections and win the third)”, he said: “Today we are defeated but the heavens will not fall down. We will win.”

On the BSP’s poor performance, Owaisi remarked that if BSP is wiped out it would be sad for Indian democracy. Stating that the BSP had a key role in strengthening Indian democracy, he exuded confidence that it will survive.

India to allow scheduled international flight operations from March 27 New Delhi (IANS): India will allow resumption of scheduled commercial international passenger services from March 27.

“After having recognized the increased vaccination coverage across the globe and in consultation with the stakeholders, the Government of India has decided to resume scheduled commercial international passenger services to or from India from March 27, 2022,” an official communique said on Tuesday.

“The suspension of scheduled commercial international passenger services to or from India, thus, stands extended only up to 2359 hrs IST on March 26, 2022 and air bubble arrangements shall accordingly be extended to this extent only.”

Last month, India’s civil aviation regulator had extended the ban on scheduled international

commercial flights till “further orders”.

In late 2021, India had announced plans to allow resumption of scheduled commercial international passenger services from December 15, 2021, with certain conditions. However, the plan was postponed due to the emergence of the third COVID-19 wave globally.

India had banned the operation of international flights on March 23, 2020, to contain and control the spread of COVID-19. Flight restrictions, however, were later eased under air bubble arrangement with certain countries.

“We welcome the government’s decision to allow resumption of scheduled commercial international flight operations from India. This step will provide impetus to the economic recovery for the sector and the nation, with borders opening for tourists,” said Ronojoy Dutta, Whole Time Director and Chief Executive Of-

ficer, IndiGo. “We look forward to connecting our customers to the people and places they love. We will soon be announcing the schedule for our international destinations, in accordance with these new guidelines.”

Rajiv Mehra, President, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), said: “Even though the decision was on the cards, still it is a big relief for the entire travel and tourism fraternity and we look forward to the revival of international tourism in the country.

“Further to enhance the foreign tourist flow to the country, we urge the government to restore all visas that were issued earlier but were suspended due to the pandemic. Besides, we appeal to the government to resume multiple entry visas and e-Visa for the countries which have been barred particularly from the source

markets like UK, Canada etc.”

Indian students evacuated from Sumy leave for Poland New Delhi (IANS): Government officials here said that the Indian students, who were evacuated from Sumy in Ukraine and transported to Poltava on Tuesday, have boarded a special train to reach Lviv from where they will be crossing over to Poland on Wednesday.

From Poland, they will be airlifted to New Delhi on Wednesday night or Thursday along with Bangladeshi and Nepalese nationals who were also evacuated from Sumy on Tuesday, the officials said.

The Indian Embassy in Ukraine said on Wednesday that the evacuated students,

who were brought to Poltava using the humanitarian corridor by bus on Tuesday, have moved westward.

The Indian Embassy also said that a special train has been arranged with the assistance of Ukrainian authority to send them on an onward journey.

Sumy, which is located in the north-east part of Ukraine close to the Russian border, came under heavy shelling by Russian forces, which began their military operation in Ukraine on February 24.

Nearly 700 Indian students were stuck there as it was impossible to get them

evacuated under heavy bombing. Even a top Russian military officer had offered buses to evacuate the Indian students, but the Indian officials said that the students couldn’t be evacuated until a ceasefire was announced by both the warring sides.

The governments of Russia and Ukraine announced a ceasefire and provided a humanitarian corridor on Tuesday from 10 a.m. (Moscow time) onwards after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Ukrainie President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Russian counterpart Vladimir

Putin on Monday, requesting them to provide safe passage to evacuate the remaining Indian nationals stuck in the war-torn country.

The Indian Embassy arranged buses to shift all 694 Indian students in Sumy along with Bangladeshi and Nepalese nationals to Poltava in central Ukraine on Tuesday.

The Embassy also issued an advisory, asking the remaining Indians stranded in the capital city of Kiev to leave by using the humanitarian corridor by any available means of transportation.

Bhagwant Mann, new Punjab Cabinet to be sworn-in on March 16 Chandigarh (IANS): After registering a landslide victory in Punjab Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Chief Minister-designate Bhagwant Mann and his Cabinet colleagues will be sworn in on March 16, it was announced on Friday.

2022 Kia Niro TouriNg

By Veeno Dewan Disclaimer! As the title of this article says- My wife did buy a brand-new Kia Niro All Electric (EV) back in October 2021. I have driven it a few times and have come away very impressed with its equipment levels, comfort, practicality, and no fuss driving manners. The wife and family love the Niro - and the best part is no pesky gasoline bills to worry about!

The 2022 Kia Niro looks unusual – a cross between a wagon and a Crossover, but its lower and very practical with its four doors and rear hatch. There is Kia’s signature “tiger-nose” grille with a nice well-integrated look to the front fascia. There is a choice of a gas engine models with the hybrid, a PHEV Niro or the fully electric Niro EV- which our family bought.

The base hybrid model uses a DOHC 16-valve Atkinson-cycle 1.6-liter inline-4, producing 104 hp, and 109 lb-ft of torque teamed up with an electric synchronous AC motor. The said motor produces g 43 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque for a combined output of, 139 hp, 195 lb-ft: 1.6-kWh lithiumion. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 4.6 L/100 km.

The Niro is also available as a plug-in hybrid, which adds a large lithium-ion polymer battery enabling the PHEV to offer 42 km on electric power alone at full charge. All models feature a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Meanwhile, our newest EV family member, The Kia Niro EV uses a larger 64 kWh battery and is rated for 385 km of range. An electric motor powers the front wheels with 201 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A full recharge of the battery will take as little as 54 minutes when using a 100 kW DC Fast Charger, while a Level

2 like we use at home charges the EV battery to full capacity in around 8-9 hours overnight. A word of caution, you must have a 240-volt outlet, or it will take a huge amount of time to charge the Niro from 110v!

Inside, as usual one cannot help but be impressed with how well- appointed and well-finished the cabin is. With good visibility and a roomy interior, there is a classy upscale look to the dash and front driver’s cockpit. It’s all black detailing set off with metal look trim and neat, tidy well finished controls and nice bright gauges. SX trim Niro’s arrive with LED lighting, LED foglamps, 10.25 Multimedia screen, 7” LCD supervision cluster and HARMAN Kardon audio system.

The standard infotainment system is an 8.0-inch touchscreen, but a larger 10.3-inch unit is installed on higher trim levels.

Both are supplemented by hard buttons that include a physical volume and tuning knob. The systems are intuitive and simple, and Kia earns significant goodwill by providing wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Kia’s UVO3 interface IS - wonderful, intuitive, and easy to use.

The Kia Niro offers 635L of cargo space, and expands to 1,789L with folded rear seats.

The PHEV offers the fully electric 629L of storage behind and 1,804L with folded seats. Unfortunately, the rear seats don’t form a flat load floor when folded. With the 64-kW-hr lithium-ion battery placed under the passenger compartment, the rear seat floor is slightly raised, but overall interior space is like other Niro models, with plenty of head- and legroom even for tall passengers sitting in the back, and a flexible cargo

area that handily accommodates bulky items.

Safety is good with standard equipment such as: automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist, available forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, Available adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go

technology, Available blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert, On the road, the Niro’s electric motor’s 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque gives you effortless power especially in Sport mode. However, in Eco, Eco+, and Normal modes, torque is held a tad to minimize torque steer and wheel spin. Meanwhile the multipurpose steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, can be used for changing gears or cycling between four levels of regenerative braking, depending on the selected drive mode. The 2022 Niro EV’s low center of gravity and independent suspension gives it a smooth ride and neutral handling. When combined with its responsive steering and minimal body roll, the Crossover feels stable on sharp bends.

One pedal driving is easy with the multi -level regenerative braking.

With good road manners, generous driving no-gas range, and a practical roomy interior, the Niro EV is very tempting if you are in the market for as an electric only CUV worse. The Kia Niro is good…very good. Highly recommended (By my wife!).

FVREB posts record volume of new listings in February SURREY, BC: Buyers of Fraser Valley real estate had significantly more inventory to choose from last month due to a record-breaking volume of new listings received for the month of February.

The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB) received 3,742 new listings in February, an increase of 75.3 per cent compared to January, and an increase of 14.6 per cent compared to February of last year. The previous highest February for new listings was 3,283 in 2016.

The FVREB processed a total of 1,824 sales of all property types on its Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in February 2022, a decrease of 35.2 per cent compared to February 2021, and 39.2 per cent higher compared to January 2022. Sales remain strong at 18 per cent above the 10-year average.

By month end, February’s total active listings available for purchase were 3,790, a decrease of 8.0 per cent compared to the same month last year, however 62.5 per cent higher than what was available at the end of January. It’s the highest month-over-month increase in active listings in the Fraser Valley in 20 years.

“Although the market is still far from balanced, it is encouraging to see new listings increase again for the second month in a row,” said Fraser Valley Real Estate Board President, Larry Anderson. “We’re hopeful that this trend will be sustained leading into the spring season as more sellers come on stream to help soften the market and provide opportunities for the many buyers who’ve been

“Buyers are looking for value for their real estate dollar and the Fraser Valley market still delivers compared to other regions throughout the Lower Mainland,” said Baldev Gill CEO of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board. “That said, supply fundamentals continue to be the number one issue facing real estate markets in all regions across the province. Until there is a concerted effort to address inventory, buyers will continue to face challenging market conditions.”

In the Fraser Valley region, the average number of days to sell an apartment in February was 12 days, and 11 days for townhomes. Single family detached homes averaged 13 days before selling. The one-year comparison is 35, 21 and 21 respectively.

MLS® HPI Benchmark Price Activity Single Family Detached: At $1,670,800, the Benchmark price for an FVREB single-family detached home increased 6.5 per cent compared to last month and increased 43.6 per cent compared to February 2021.

Townhomes: At $840,900, the Benchmark price for an FVREB townhome increased 5.6 per cent compared to last month and increased 40.1 per cent compared to February 2021.

Apartments: At $614,800 the Benchmark price for an FVREB apartment/condo increased 7.1 per cent compared to last month and increased 36.3 per cent compared to February 2021.

Music for the mind

MUSIC may be the world’s greatest medicine. From infants to centenarians, people love music and the way it makes them feel good. In tribute to its universal qualities, Hans Christian Andersen said, “Where words fail, music speaks.”

Even without lyrics, songs certainly convey feelings. Among healthy people, researchers have shown that across cultural divides, people can readily place vastly different types of music into emotional categories ranging from sad to heroic, annoying to beautiful, and desirous to indignant.

But the miracle of music is in its healing qualities. Scientists studying people with brain injuries and neurological conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are making remarkable discoveries.

Music, for example, can improve the gait of people relearning to walk after a brain injury. Listening to music has also been shown to reduce perceptions of pain. People who have lost the ability to communicate due to severe brain damage can regain function by singing the words.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s typically become evident when the part of the brain involved in memory starts to fail. This gradually erodes the ability to manage everyday life independently. Loss of the sense of identity is confusing for the patient and heartbreaking for family and loved ones.

But playing music lights up wide networks in the brain including areas responsible for motor actions, emotions, and creativity. Researchers are studying how music can help treat Alzheimer’s disease.

Michael Thaut, director of the University of Toronto’s Music and Health Science Research Collaboratory, has studied patients with early Alzheimer’s disease who listen to

personally meaningful music.

He identified “autobiographically relevant, long-known music” – wedding songs, for example, or favourite records from teenage years – and played these songs repeatedly to test subjects.

Whether the participants in the research were accomplished musicians or non-musicians, the results were similar: brain function improved.

Ground-breaking research by Dr. Lola Cuddy of Queen’s University demonstrating that patients with Alzheimer’s disease have an ability to recognize music and display musical memory has informed the development of musical therapy programs as simple as creating a familiar playlist for people with dementia.

What’s going on in the brain? It appears that familiar music stimulates activity in the brain that leads to rewiring new circuits that bypass damaged regions and re-establish connections to memories.

“Music is an access key to your memory, your pre-frontal cortex,” Thaut says. For those hoping to prevent dementia, he adds, “It’s simple: keep listening to the music that you’ve loved all your life. Your all-time favourite songs, those pieces that are especially meaningful to you. Make that your brain gym.”

Experts disagree on whether it is better to listen to familiar music or new music. While familiar music elicits happiness, some experts suggest that listening to the grandchildren’s music might help the brain create and reinforce additional neural pathways. On this, the jury is out.

What is certain is that music does what no pill can do. Within seconds of exposure, and for sustained periods, it heals the mind.

More good news, it’s not just the brain that benefits from music. Music can reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, ease pain, improve sleep, boost mood, and elevate alertness. But there is something remarkable about music that helps stow away and later retrieve deeply valued information and connections.

Shelley, the English Romantic poet, who tragically lived only to 29 years, wrote, “Music, when soft voices die, Vibrates in the memory—” Today’s researchers have proven him right.

And what sweeter medicine than to turn on the music and enjoy the journey through happy memories while also exercising the mind.
