AstraZeneca vaccine recipients can get another AstraZeneca vaccine or an mRNA vaccine PROVINCIAL Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix announced on Thursday that if you have received the AstraZeneca vaccine, you have the choice to get another AstraZeneca vaccine, or you can choose to have an mRNA vaccine instead.

They said they were sharing the details of the AstraZeneca Dose 2 approach, which is based on scientific evidence and the guidance of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization and their own B.C. immunization committee.

Henry and Dix said: “Starting this coming Monday (June 7), and like the mRNA vaccines, everyone who has received the AstraZeneca vaccine will be notified to book their second vaccine after eight weeks. Once that notification goes out, you can book your vaccine.

On Thursday, Singh presented the NDP Opposition Day Motion, saying: “Survivors, families and nations are demanding concrete action to advance real reconciliation, as opposed to just more words and symbolic gestures.

“While the Liberals have been in power for six years, they have failed to implement the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Furthermore, in less than two weeks, the Liberals are back

in court fighting First Nations children, denying them justice, and refusing to comply with Canadian Human Rights Tribunal orders. This must end.

No more fighting Indigenous kids in court.”

The NDP Opposition Day motion called on the Liberals to end their legal battle against First Nation children and accept the findings of the Human Rights Tribunal. The NDP is also calling on the Liberals to end their legal battle against St. Anne’s Residential School survivors.

While it has been six years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) issued its 94 calls to action, only a fraction of those have been implemented.

The NDP said that to help survivors of Residential Schools, their families and communities, the Liberals must provide appropriate resources to assist

with the emotional, physical, spiritual, mental, and cultural trauma. The NDP is also calling on the Liberal government to act with urgency on all Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls report’s Calls to Justice.

New hard hat rules in B.C. make workplaces more inclusive WORKPLACES in B.C. will soon be more inclusive for people who wear religious head coverings without compromising workplace safety, thanks to changes WorkSafeBC is making to B.C.’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulation on safety headgear.

“Creating more inclusive workplaces is a priority for our government, and we have been advocating for a change to the safety headgear regulations for a long time,” said Harry Bains, Minister of Labour, on Wednesday. “We are building an economy that benefits everyone, which includes ensuring safe workplaces are inclusive to people regardless of their faith.”

Starting on September 1, 2021, employers will be required to review each area of a job site when determining if a person must wear safety headgear, such as a hard hat, in that area. Employers will determine, through a risk assessment, what safety precautions could be taken to prevent head injuries and whether a hard hat is necessary.

In B.C., workplaces are governed by the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, which lays out the rules around workplace safety.

In some workplaces, safety headgear, such as hard hats, is used to protect workers from head injury from falling objects and other hazards. In many workplaces, employers have approached the regulation with a blanket rule requiring

Labour Minister Harry Bains all workers to wear a hard hat on the job, even in areas where the level of risk may be low or nonexistent.

This regulatory change provides more opportunities for employers to safely accommodate workers who wear head coverings, such as a turban, as a religious practice.

For many years, the Sikh community has raised concerns about not being able to fully participate in the workforce because of some employers’ approach to the safety headgear requirement.

Bains initiated a request in 2019 asking WorkSafeBC to review safety headgear regulations and consider changes to make them more inclusive. WorkSafeBC held extensive public and stakeholder consultations in 2020 and early 2021.

Employers, industry associations, workers, unions and community

leaders shared their perspectives on the proposed changes, which were considered as part of the decision. On April 27, 2021, the WorkSafeBC board of directors approved a regulatory change to Part 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation dealing with safety headgear.

After the changes take effect on September 1, 2021, WorkSafeBC will continue to conduct inspections in the industries with the highest risk of serious injuries. To ensure employers are aware of and understand the changes to the regulation, WorkSafeBC will send information to employers prior to the regulations coming into effect.

The information will include information on each of the regulatory changes, which will include links to the revisions and any appropriate guidelines.

Baltej Dhillon, retired RCMP officer and WorkSafeBC board member, said: “The use of a hard hat as personal protective equipment is the least effective compared to other safety controls. This change will also allow members of the Sikh community who wear a turban to engage in dialogue with their employers to address workplace risks, which can, in turn, eliminate the need for a hard hat in certain scenarios. This change supports worker safety and will allow more Sikhs to come to work without having to compromise their reli-

gious beliefs.”

Balpreet Singh Boparai, legal counsel, World Sikh Organization of Canada, noted: “These regulatory changes support workplace health and safety and benefit not just Sikhs, but all B.C. workers.

This step makes British Columbia a leader in the accommodation of the turban, and I’m confident that government, employers and workers will work together to make these new regulations a success.”

Kalwant Sahota, retired forestry worker, added: “I have been advocating about the turban and hard hat issue of Sikhs for over 13 years now, along with other community activists, workers and Sikh societies. As a turban-wearing Sikh who worked in the forestry industry for 32 years, I am happy to see the government take an important step towards inclusivity in the workplace.”

Jarnail Randhawa, 64, of Brampton arrested for murder of his wife ONTARIO’S Peel Regional Police investigators from the Homicide and Missing Person Bureau are asking for the public’s assistance in the investigation regarding the death of a woman in the City of Brampton.

On Wednesday, June 2, at approximately 9:01 p.m., police received

a call for an unconscious female located on a trail near Ross Road and Temple Hill Road in Brampton. Upon arrival, police located a woman suffering from obvious signs of trauma. Paramedics attempted to render assistance; unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

The victim is Dalbir Randhawa, a 64-year-old woman from Brampton.

The victim’s husband, Jarnail Randhawa, a 64-year-old man from Brampton, has been arrested. He is in custody and will be charged with second-degree murder.

He will be held for a bail hearing

and will attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on June 3.

“This was a tragic loss of life which will carry rippling impacts for family, friends, and our community.

Our sincere condolences to all those affected by this tragedy and the loss of Dalbir Randhawa,” said Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich.

HERE are the key points from a new poll released on Monday by Abacus Data on the federal political landscape in Canada: 1. The federal Liberals hold a 3-point lead over the Conservatives: Liberal 34, Conservative 31, NDP 17, Greens 7. This is largely unchanged from two weeks ago.

2. In the last five weeks, there has been a strong 12-point upswing in the number of people who say the country is heading in the right direction, from an ebb of 33% on April 21 to today’s level of 45%. Perceptions of

how things are going in the rest of the world and in the US are also moving up during this period, which suggests a strong linkage with the improving outlook about the COVID-19 pandemic.

3. Here in Canada, we’ve seen a striking 25-point climb in the number of people willing to believe that the “worst of the pandemic is behind us. This perception – held by 41% – is by far the highest measure of optimism we have seen since the pandemic began. The rise in optimism likely has a lot

to do with the fact that many people are getting vaccinated.

Those who’ve had at least one shot are 7 points more likely to say the country is going in the right direction, and 5 points more positive in their overall assessment of the federal government.

4. Federal performance on “getting vaccines delivered to Canada in a timely fashion” now finds more people (40%) giving the government excellent or good marks than offering poor or terrible ratings (30%). The remaining 30%

give the Trudeau government an “acceptable” rating. This is a 15-point improvement in a sixweek period.

5. Asked which of the national party leaders they would like to see become Prime Minister after the next election, Justin Trudeau is the choice of 33%, roughly doubling the number who pick Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole (18%) and Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh (16%). Green Party Leader Annamie Paul (3%) and Maxime Bernier (4%) are way behind.

B.C. lost 23,200 part-time jobs, gained 21,300 full-time jobs in May

THE federal Labour Force Survey for the month of May showed B.C. lost 23,200 part-time jobs while gaining 21,300 full-time jobs. B.C.’s unemployment rate remained stable at 7%, well below the national rate of 8.2%.

Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, said on Friday: “Despite this pandemic, B.C. continues to lead Canada with a job recovery rate of over 99%. This is alongside the solid economic outlook that was ac-

Over the past four years, B.C.’s general minimum wage has increased from $11.35 to $15.20 per hour. It has benefited close to 400,000 British Columbians over those years – the majority of whom are women, immigrants and

knowledged last week by the global credit rating agency Moody’s, which affirmed B.C.’s triple-A credit rating.

B.C. remains the only province in Canada to receive the top rating by all the major international credit rating agencies.”

Kahlon added: “While B.C. is well positioned to have a strong economic recovery, these job numbers reflect the difficult situation many businesses were in just a couple weeks ago when the Circuit Breaker restrictions were still in effect.

“Since that time, we have launched BC’s Restart plan, which has led to increased optimism and hope across the province. Many B.C. businesses, including restaurants, pubs and accommodations, have started to welcome people following Step 1 of the restart plan, which began on May 25.

“The pandemic continues to affect people differently. The unemployment rate remains high for young people aged 15 to 24, and the pandemic has also disproportionately

impacted people who identify as Indigenous, Black and people of colour. B.C. is committed to assisting the hardest hit and sharing the benefits of recovery with everyone.

“Our government has provided more in per-capita direct supports to people and businesses than any other province in Canada, and we will continue to support businesses and workers to ensure everyone can be part of an innovative, sustainable and inclusive economic recovery as we all work to build a stronger B.C.”

ing better-paying jobs. We need to work towards wages that workers can actually live on instead of being held back by.”

When this work began, B.C. had one of the lowest minimum wages in the country, but was one of the most expensive places to live. B.C. now has a minimum wage that is the highest of any province and starting next year, the increases for minimum wage will be tied to inflation.

The gradual increase of the minimum wage over four years has given businesses time to prepare for each in-

crease, offering them stability and certainty. The pandemic has presented unforeseen challenges over the last year, but the Province continues to support and assist those companies that have been impacted. B.C. currently leads all major provinces in job recovery.

As of June 1, the minimum wage rates are increasing as follows: * General minimum wage increases to $15.20 an hour from $14.60 an hour. * Liquor server minimum wage of $13.95 an hour is being eliminated and replaced with the general minimum

wage of $15.20 an hour. * Live-in camp leader minimum wage, per day, increases to $121.65 from $116.86; and resident caretaker minimum wage, per month, increases to $912.28, plus $36.56 per suite for those who manage nine to 60 residential suites and to $3,107.42 for 61 or more suites.

TransLink’s annual fare increase in effect July 1 TRANSLINK is reminding customers that on July 1, fares will see increases ranging from 5 cents for a single-use ticket to $4.05 for a three-zone monthly pass.

TransLink says it recognizes transit is an essential service for thousands of people in the region and should remain affordable as the local economy recovers.

Additional funding for business recovery grant THE Province announced on Friday that it is adding millions in additional funding to keep the Small and Medium Sized Business Recovery Grant operating until the expected start of Step 3 of BC’s Restart plan on July 1.

The program has been providing relief to thousands of B.C. businesses impacted by the pandemic.

“The Small and Medium Sized Business Recovery Grant program has had tremendous uptake and helped thousands of B.C. businesses position themselves for a strong recovery as we embark on BC’s Restart plan,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “We built this grant program for the business community. Its success is directly attributed to the input businesses shared that allowed us to reshape the program along the way.”

To date, the business recovery grant program has committed $290 million to support businesses impacted by the pandemic. After applications close on July 2, the total investment

This funding will support more than 20,000 B.C. businesses and 260,000 employees over the course of the pandemic and beyond.

As of June 3, 2021, more than 10,000 grants have been awarded to B.C. businesses. Over 41% of these grants have been awarded to tourism-relat-

ed businesses.

“Over 4,100 tourism operators have accessed the grant and received funds from the $100 million for tourism-specific funding. This additional support was a call to action from the Tourism Task Force to provide relief to people and businesses that were struggling,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “I encourage any tourism businesses that haven’t accessed the grant to see if they are eligible.”

The Circuit Breaker Business Relief Grant is delivering over $130 million to hospitality and accommodation businesses impacted by the recently lifted health orders. The Circuit Breaker Business Relief Grant will close on June 4.

Combined, these two grant programs provide approximately $560 million in relief to businesses hit hard during the pandemic.

Eligible businesses interested in applying for the grant are encouraged to apply right away. All businesses that apply, including businesses in

the application process, must submit all final documentation and details prior to the July 2, deadline.

Outstanding grants and related service-provider claims will continue to be processed as soon as possible after the application period closes.

Many programs that provide ongoing supports for businesses remain in place as the economy continues to reopen. This includes federal programs, such as the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy and the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy, as well as provincial programs, such as the Increased Employment Incentive and the COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave reimbursement program.

THE BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) in a statement on the atrocity at Kamloops Indian Residential School said: “The BC Assembly of First Nations has been reflecting on the atrocity of 215 dead children in unmarked graves discovered at the Kamloops Residential School last week. Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc is a member of the board of the BCAFN, and we stand in solidarity with her and her community, and all First Nations citizens during this most trying time.

BCTF calls for decisive action from federal government following discovery of 215 dead children

AS Indigenous communities and Canadians coast-to-coast mourn the discovery of 215 dead children at the Kamloops Indian Residential School, the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) on Tuesday called for decisive action from the federal government.

“We’ve clearly heard from Indigenous communities that they’ve known all along that many more children died than had been reported, and the federal government must take responsibility for continuing to uncover the truth.

There can be no reconciliation without truth,” said Teri Mooring, BCTF President. “The responsibility of searching for these missing children should never have fallen upon the Tk’emlúps te Secwé pemc people. Canada can and must do better.”

Specifically, the BCTF is calling for the Government of Canada to: 1. declare a national period of mourning following last week’s discovery at Kamloops Indian Residential School.

Trudeau expressed his deepest condolences to the survivors and their families. Port Moody Police warn about danger of replica guns LAST week, Port Moody Police responded to two separate gun calls.

In both incidents, police located and safely arrested the suspects.

And in both incidents, the guns brandished were replicas.

Male with two imitation firearms arrested in Surrey A quick response from frontline officers led to the arrest of a suspect with two imitation firearms in the Central City Shopping Centre in Surrey.

On May 30, at 5:53 p.m., Surrey RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a male with a gun inside the Central City Shopping Centre located at 10153 King George Boulevard. The male suspect allegedly threatened staff and a customer at a business inside the mall with a weapon before fleeing. He was arrested a short time later. Oficers seized

two imitation firearms and a knife.

Cody Doherty, 36, of Surrey is facing numerous charges including possession of weapon for a dangerous purposes, pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, and carrying a concealed weapon. Cody Doherty appeared before a judicial justice and was remanded in custody.

Bank robbery thwarted by customers in Abbotsford AN armed suspect attempted to rob the Scotiabank on Gladwin Road on Wednesday at 11:29 a.m. The suspect walked into the bank brandishing a shotgun and demanded that everyone lie on the ground. The suspect threw bags onto the counter and demanded money.

As the suspect was making demands, one customer confronted the suspect. Three other customers joined the first and tackled the suspect to the ground.

Abbotsford Police plainclothes officers quickly arrived on scene and made an arrest.

At 11:33 a.m., only four minutes after the initial call to police, the suspect was in police custody. Luckily, no staff or customers were physically injured during this dynamic and dangerous incident. Abbotsford Police Victim Services are on scene to support and assist bank customers and staff.

A 46-year-old remains in police custody facing numerous charges including robbery and firearms-related offences. Abbotsford Police Major Crime Detectives are investigating.

Sgt Judy Bird said: “We are thankful for our community’s support and amazed at the willingness of those customers whose first thought was to protect others in the bank. As grateful as we are for this outcome, we remind the public to be aware of how volatile and dangerous these situations can be, especially with armed suspects.”

On Thursday, Bird said that the suspect was a female after some news reports refered to the suspect as a male.

“With respects to this suspect, we purposely remained gender-neutral in this release – and will be practicing this going forward as well,” said Bird.

THE National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has recommended that a first shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine can be followed by Moderna or Pfizer.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada, said on Tuesday that NACI’s latest guidance considered a range of factors from safety concerns through vaccine supply to provide recommendations on the safety and effectiveness of the interchangeability of authorized COVID-19 vaccines or ‘mixed vaccine schedules’ for first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Tam said: “In short, the interchangeability of vaccines means you can receive one

She added: “While NACI continues to recommend that jurisdictions maximize the number of individuals benefiting from the first

dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by extending the interval between doses up to four months, in the context of increasing COVID-19 vaccine supply in Canada, the Committee recommended last week that second doses be offered as soon as possible. NACI recommends that priority for second doses should

be given to those at highest risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19 disease after – or at the same time as – first doses are offered to all remaining eligible populations. NACI continues to closely monitor the effectiveness of extending dose intervals and will update recommendations as needed.”

Open Letter: Keeping schools open during the pandemic B.C.’s public health physicians and child health specialists reflect at end of school year ONE year ago in British Columbia, schools were preparing for limited re-entry of students who had been learning online since the end of spring break amid the province’s first wave of COVID-19.

Survey data from this period gave an early indication of the detrimental impacts of school closures we’ve now observed around the world: impaired learning for many students, decreased social connection, and stress for families.

The return to classes in September came with both benefits for students, and accompanying fears that schools could be drivers of community transmission. But thanks to the hard work of schools, staff, parents and caregivers, and students, B.C. was able to achieve a collective goal:

schools remained safely open in the second and third waves to fulfill their essential function in the intellectual and social growth of students.

Over the past year we have learned a great deal about COVID-19 and the risk in our schools. We now know that, although students and staff do test positive for COVID-19, they most often acquire the virus from the community at rates that mirror community transmission. The vast majority of the time these are isolated events with no onward transmission in the school.

Contact tracing studies conducted in Ireland, Singapore, Wisconsin, England, North Carolina, and Utah, among others, have consistently demonstrated low rates of inschool transmission. In B.C., Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health have reported similar results. Asymptomatic viral testing and serop-

revalence studies addressing the potential for “silent” asymptomatic spread in Italy, Norway, Australia, and B.C. have similarly suggested that widespread COVID-19 transmission is rare in the school setting.

The percentage of exposures in school leading to transmission events has remained low even as we’ve seen a shift in the circulating variants of COVID-19 in B.C. This means that the safety measures in schools – including accessible testing for those who need it, keeping kids home when sick, practicing good hand hygiene, and restricting entry – continue to be effective even against variants of concern.

In B.C.’s third wave, while close contacts of COVID-19 cases were isolated, broad school closures were not implemented, and maintaining consistent in-school education did not prevent public

health measures from effectively decreasing community transmission. Perhaps most importantly, B.C. has been able to keep schools safely open for in-person learning, while still maintaining one of the lowest COVID-19 mortality rates of any larger jurisdiction in North America.

We’ve also learned more this year about how closing schools hurts children and families, especially those who are the most vulnerable.

For many students, schools are important for learning and social development. For vulnerable children, schools can be a lifeline – the site of access to healthy and consistent meals, a place of connection to trusted adults, and, for some, a source of stability in chaotic lives. School closures also place disproportionate burdens on women and lone parents who shoulder the responsibility of supporting

curricular activities that keep students engaged at school and connected to their peers.

Surrey commits to building all future civic facilities to RHFAC Gold rating SURREY is the first city in Canada to commit to building to a Gold level using Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC) for all future civic facilities.

This announcement comes during National AccessAbility Week 2021, taking place from May 30 to June 5. The week celebrates the valuable contributions of Canadians living with disabilities, and recognizes the efforts of individuals, communities and workplaces that are working to remove barriers to accessibility and inclusion.

“By taking this step, we are making a commitment

to ensure that people of all ages and abilities can fully participate in everyday life in Surrey,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “We are proud to be the first city in Canada to make this proclamation, and we thank the Rick Hansen Foundation for their partnership and support as we press forward to design all future civic facilities in a way that will be accessible for everyone. When we remove barriers, we create a place that is inclusive to everyone.”

Surrey was one of the first Canadian municipalities to receive an RHFAC Gold rating and now has 43 rated civic facilities, including 29 that have been certified, and five that have achieved Gold. To date, over 1,300 sites across Canada have been rated through the program.

To receive an RHFAC Gold rating, sites must receive a minimum of 80% on their rating scorecard, the primary entrance must be accessible, audio-visual alarms, safety warning features, and assistive listening and communication enhancement technology must be present where applicable. A feasibility study conducted by HCMA Architecture + Design (HCMA) showed only a 1% average increase in construction cost (or 0.4% for office buildings) to achieve RHFAC Gold compared to National or Ontario building code when thoughtful planning and design is applied upfront, which is what Surrey is doing.

Surrey City Council approves land purchases to convert into parkland

SURREY City Council on Mon day night approved the purchase of land to add to the City’s parkland inventory. The City will convert the properties located in Crescent Beach and Grandview Heights into parks and amenities for community use.

rey Mayor Doug McCallum. “The purchase of these properties is another example of Council’s priority in protecting and enhancing our environment. As our City continues to grow, I can assure our residents that Council is always looking for opportunities to expand parkland so Surrey can stay at the forefront as a thriving, green and inclusive city.”

The properties approved for purchase are: * 16995 24 Avenue in Grandview Heights * 12254 Beecher Street and 2732 Mackenzie Avenue in Crescent Beach.

“Surrey has been referred to as the City of Parks,” said Councillor Laurie Guerra, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee. “The purchase of

these properties for the express purpose for use as parkland is proof that Council is committed to expanding the City’s green space and ensuring that our residents have numerous and growing options to relax, exercise or play in Surrey’s parks.”

Since 2019, Council has committed $28 million in parkland acquisition and has added 225 acres of new parkland in Surrey.

Upgrades to track and field area at South Surrey Athletic Park approved SURREY City Council has approved the reconstruction and improvements to the track and field area at South Surrey Athletic Park.

The existing track will be removed and replaced with a new rubberized track with new lines and markings.

The adjacent grass area will

also be graded and shaped with new sand grown sod.

“South Surrey Athletic Park is a major sporting destination in Surrey and the track and field area is long overdue for upgrades,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum.

“As part of the Surrey Invests program, the reconstruc-

tion and improvements will restore and revitalize this area for use for all track and field events. This latest project is proof that Council is taking every opportunity to deliver on expanding our green spaces and improving our sporting facilities for all to enjoy, train or com-

pete.”

The $1.4 million project will also add a new hammer/ discus cage and the reconstruction of the track runways and high jump area.

Construction will get underway this month and the project will be completed by early September.

“Surrey is known for its exceptional sporting facilities which host numerous competitions and tournaments,” said Councillor Laurie Guerra, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee. “This project to improve and upgrade the South Surrey Athletic

Park Track will benefit our local athletic clubs, individual athletes or anyone who is looking to get a brisk walk in.”

Alleged drug trafficker among those caught driving while impaired by Delta Police DURING Canada Road Safety Week, May 18-24, a focus on driver education and awareness saw Delta Police hand out 629 violation tickets. Of those tickets, 14 were for drug or alcohol impaired drivers.

And police charged four drivers with prohibited driving.

“We also held a special impaired driving project May 20, with three drug recognition experts out conducting targeted enforcement,” said Acting Sgt. Grayson Smith, who heads the Delta Police’s Traffic Section.

“During that project our officers located an impaired driver of a vehicle known to be involved in drug trafficking.

That driver is now the subject of investigation for several

Criminal Code offences, including impaired driving, and police seized approximately $6,000 in cash believed to be the proceeds of drug trafficking.”

Road safety is one of the top priorities always identified by the public, whenever Delta Police ask where people want to see police resources. And it’s an area where enforcement and awareness campaigns can influence driving behaviour – hopefully cutting down on collisions and injuries, said Delta Police.

Speed is one of the top contributing factors in collisions, and is the subject of many calls to police. Delta Police target locations where there are higher incidents of colli-

sions, as well as areas where the public has identified a traffic safety concern. This is something that can be done anytime online, through the DPD online reporting tool.

“While our officers know they may not be the most welcome sight to some drivers, ultimately our job is to help ensure all road users – including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians – can get to their destination safely,” said Smith.

Revenue from violation tickets goes directly to the Province. Although violation tickets are a metric police track, there are no quotas set for tickets.

Illicit drugs claim lives of 176 British Columbians in April

PRELIMINARY reporting released by the BC Coroners Service confirms at least 176 British Columbians were lost to toxic illicit drugs in April, bringing the total number of deaths recorded in 2021 to 680.

“Once again, we’re reminded that the scale of this public health emergency is truly unprecedented,” said Lisa Lapointe, Chief Coroner, on Tuesday. “I offer my heartfelt condolences to every family in the province that is experiencing the unimaginable pain of sudden and unexpected loss. Every life lost to toxic drugs in our province is a profound tragedy.

Every one of them mattered, and every one of them will be missed.”

The 176 lives lost are a record for the month of April and represent a 43% increase over the number of deaths reported in April 2020. This is the 14th consecutive month in which more than 100 British Columbians have died from suspected illicit drug toxicity and raises the provincial rate of deaths for 2021 to 39.3 per 100,000 residents.

The Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities have accounted for 61% of suspected illicit drug toxicity deaths in British Columbia in 2021. However, the health service delivery areas with the highest rates of death are Vancouver, Northeast, Thompson Cari-

boo, Northwest and North Vancouver Island, evidence that this crisis has impacted nearly every corner of the province.

The toxicity of the drug supply in B.C. has continued to increase. Fentanyl has been Lisa Lapointe detected in 86% of deaths this year, while carfentanil, a more potent analogue of fentanyl, has been found in 62 samples in 2021, almost as many as were detected in all of 2020 (65). The reporting notes a continued increase in the presence of benzodiazapenes, which were detected in 57% of samples in April, almost four times the amount reported in July 2020 (15%).

“These latest numbers emphasize the toxicity of the illicit drug supply in B.C.,” Lapointe said. “We know that substance use disorder is a complex health is-

sue, and those experiencing it need meaningful and compassionate services and supports. Far too often, we hear from families who have lost a loved one that no help was available despite desperate searches over months or years. It is critical that harm reduction services, including safe supply, are accessible where and when people need them, and that recovery services are evidence based and accountable.”

Additional key preliminary findings are below. Data are subject to change: * The number of illicit drug toxicity deaths in April 2021 was about 5.9 deaths per day. * Males accounted for 79% of deaths in 2021. * In 2021, 70% of those dying were aged 30 to 59. * The proportion of deaths of those 50 years of age and older has steadily increased over the past six years. In 2021, 39% of deaths have been 50 years or over. * No deaths have been reported at supervised consumption or drug overdose prevention sites.

“The BC Coroners Service’s report for April shows the situation is not getting any better. This is devastating for so many people grieving the loss of their loved ones. There are feelings of fear Sheila Malcolmson reverberating in communities throughout the province, particularly among families and those working on the front lines of this crisis.

“As minister of mental health and addictions, I share these feelings of sorrow. It is hard to fathom that despite the incredible efforts of front-line workers, health and community organizations, and all those working tirelessly to save lives, we continue losing friends and family to toxic street drugs. It is unacceptable.

“When the overdose crisis collided with the COVID-19 pandemic, much of the progress we were making was lost. Now, as we see our province turning the corner on COVID-19, it hurts even more to see overdose fatalities continue to mount.

“Over the past year, as we have witnessed governments, communities, organizations and people across all sectors at every level of society come together to defeat COVID-19, so has there been unprecedented and heartfelt work to turn the tide on the overdose emergency. I’m grateful to everyone on the front lines of this public health crisis for their extraordinary efforts, without which we would have lost many more lives.

“Because substance use affects everyone – our families, friends, co-workers, classmates and neighbours – every British Columbian can be part of the solution by talking about addiction and ending the stigma.

“Our government will continue expanding life-saving resources across the continuum of care, from safer supply to more treatment beds. Going forward, we are deepening our investment in people and allhands-on-deck interventions.”

THE BC LIberals said on Tuesday that the updated illicit drug overdose report by the Coroners Service reveals, B.C. continues to shatter fatal overdose records month after month — yet the government appears slow to act to reverse Trevor Halford this deadly trend.

“On May 14, 2021, the Official Opposition wrote to the Premier asking him to activate the Select Standing Committee on Health to work on immediate actions to prevent further tragedy. The Premier didn’t even respond to the letter, refusing to engage in this non-partisan effort,” said Trevor Halford, BC Liberal Critic for Mental Health and Addictions. “Instead, he continues to reuse the same talking points month after month while more families lose loved ones. We don’t need more words — we need more action.”

Halford noted it is also critical to ensure culturally appropriate services are in place and properly funded, as First Nations people continue to be disproportionally represented in overdose numbers. While First Nations people account for 3.3. per cent of B.C.’s population, they represented 14.7 per cent of all toxic drug deaths in 2020, up from 11.8 per cent in 2019.

“It’s clear urgent action needs to be taken in our province to help save lives. More than just supplementing programs, this NDP government needs to ensure B.C. has a comprehensive mental health and addictions system,” said Halford. “British Columbians struggling with addiction need access to affordable treatment options, which are sorely lacking.”

In April 2021, B.C. recorded 176 suspected illicit drug toxicity deaths, the largest number ever recorded in the month of April and an average of 5.9 deaths per day.

CFSEU-BC seizes drugs, firearms, cash and vehicles in investigation into alleged drug trafficking and organized crime A 10-month-long investigation by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) into the alleged drug trafficking activities of a crime group operating in the Lower Mainland has resulted in the arrests of several people and the seizure of illegal and potentially deadly drugs, firearms, cash and vehicles.

In July 2020, CFSEU-BC began an investigation into the alleged drug trafficking activities of a drug distribution network with ties to the Lower Mainland gang conflict. CFSEU-BC’s investigation gathered significant evidence on several individuals and took simultaneous enforcement action at multiple locations.

During the investigation a total of eight search warrants were executed on residences in the Vancouver area and five search warrants were executed on vehicles.

The searches resulted in CFSEU-BC seizing a combined: * 9.24 kg of fentanyl * 4.7 kg of methamphetamine * 1 kg of cocaine * approximately $130,000 in Canadian cash * 1 assault rifle and 6 handguns * 5 vehicles as offence-related property

A total of five individuals linked to this organized crime/drug trafficking network have been arrested. All of them were released from custody as the investigation continues and investigators begin preparing to seek charge approval for several Criminal Code and drug-related offences.

Our careful restart plan

BY AMAN SINGH NDP MLA for RichmondQueensborough EACH and every day, I hear about more friends, family and community members who are getting vaccinated against COVID-19. As of this week, more than 70% of eligible adults across B.C. have received their first dose of vaccine.

This is a milestone we can all be proud of, but also a reminder of all we have sacrificed in the past year.

The provincial vaccination rate means that we can now start to reduce public health orders and restrictions in a careful and gradual way. BC’s Restart Plan is a 4-step plan that will bring us back together and allow us to resume many of

As of May 25, we are in Step 1 of the plan. This means that we can now have visits with up to five people (or one other household) indoors, and up to ten people outdoors. Organized events, like funerals and

wedding ceremonies, can proceed with up to ten people indoors or up to 50 people outside, as long as they remain seated. We can also resume traveling anywhere within the travel region, as well as dining indoors in restaurants in groups of up to six people.

I know this is welcome news for many people as we move into summer. But I want to be clear that we still have work to do. In order to move to the next phase of the restart, we need to continue to follow all public health advice, like wearing masks and keeping 2m apart in public indoor spaces. It’s also still essential to stay home and get tested if you feel sick – even if you have already been vaccinated.

We will only move to the next step

if the case counts and hospitalization rates continue to decline.

Although our province-wide vaccine rollout is moving ahead of schedule, some communities continue to see lower rates of vaccination. If you have already registered or received your vaccine, take a few minutes this week to check in with your family, friends, and neighbours – they might need some help or just an extra nudge to get themselves registered, too.

Remind them they can register online at getvaccinated.gov.bc.ca or by phone at 1-833-838-2323, with translation in over 120 languages.

If we continue to see transmission of COVID-19 going down, we will move to Step 2 as early as June 15.

We can look forward to summer

The opening of the $68.8 million project completes the first phase of a housing plan that will see student housing options at Burnaby campus expand to 3,250 beds by 2035. SFU worked with funding partner Centurion Asset Management to make this project a reality.

Phase two of the student housing plan is already underway and will include 369 additional rooms and a Housing Services office, which will centralize services for residents and provide space for Residence and Housing staff.

It is slated to open early 2023.

Gang associate Murid Ghulam charged with attempted murder ON Saturday, May 29 at approximately 2 a.m., New Westminster Police Department patrol members responded to a report of a stabbing on Columbia Street outside of the Columbia SkyTrain Station.

Officers located a man suffering from life-threatening injuries and provided assistance. The victim was transported to the hospital by BC Ambulance.

An initial search for a suspect involved support from the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit.

New Westminster Police Major Crime Unit investigators assumed conduct of the investigation.

The New Westminster Forensic Identification Section was called to process the scene. Investi-

gators were able to identify and locate a suspect.

On May 31, 26-year-old Murid Ghulam of New Westminster was arrested and since then he has been charged with one count of attempted murder.

“Detectives worked with our policing partners from across the Lower Mainland region and we located and safely arrested a suspect,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “The suspect remains in custody until his next court appearance on June 9.”

Although Ghulam and the victim are associated to known Lower Mainland gangs, investigators have not yet been able to confirm the motive behind the stabbing. The New Westminster Police Department encourages anyone who knows about this incident and has yet to speak to police to call the Major Crime Unit at 604-529-2430.

Biden announces India to “Ugliest receive COVID-19 vaccines language in India”? from US stockpile New York (IANS): As US President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that India will receive COVID-19 vaccines directly from its stockpile, US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the distribution, according to the White House.

Biden, who has faced international and domestic pressure to share the surplus vaccines, said he was releasing the first set of 25 million doses of which six million will be distributed between India, South Korea, Mexico and Canada.

The six million “will be shared directly with countries experiencing surges, those in crisis, and other partners and neighbours”, he said without a breakdown of how many will go to India.

Thursday’s call was likely the first interaction between Modi and Harris, who has criticised him in the past, although not since assuming office.

The White House said that she also spoke to Presidents Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico and Alejandro Giammattei of Guatemala, and Prime Minister Keith Rowley of Trinidad, who is also Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

She “notified each of the leaders that the Biden-Harris Administration will begin sharing the first 25 million doses of COVID vaccines to their respective countries and others, as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s framework for sharing at least 80 million vaccines globally by the

end of June”, and they thanked her and “agreed to continue working together to address COVID-19 and advance our mutual interests around the world,” the White House said.

Biden said in his announcement that another seven million doses will be earmarked for South and Southeast Asia, but did not name the recipients.

These will be distributed through Covax, the international consortium for providing vaccines to developing countries under the World Health Organisation leadership.

Covax will also get six million doses earmarked for Latin America and the Caribbean, and five million for Africa.

“In the days to come, as we draw on the experience of distributing the vaccine doses announced today, we will have more details to provide about how future doses will be shared,” Biden said.

Several members of Congress including Raja Krishnamoorthi have asked Biden to send vaccines to India, which is facing a deadly second wave surge of the

pandemic.

“Our approach will be to ensure that it is distributed in an equitable manner around the world,” Biden’s spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Wednesday.

While most of the requests for vaccines for India focused on the 60 million AstraZeneca vaccines in the US stockpile, Politico said that the vaccines being donated will be a mix of those made by Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, and Pfizer. The AstraZeneca vaccine, which is branded as Covishield in India, has not received the approval of the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the US. Biden had so far resisted sharing the vaccines globally — except with Canada and Mexico — because he wanted to be sure that under any eventuality there would be enough for all Americans.

That was in contrast to India, Russia and China that made diplomatic splashes by donating vaccines. Now nearly half the population of the US has been vaccinated, according to the Centres for Disease Control, giving Biden some breathing space.

While there is a global clamour for vaccines, the US is battling resistance to vaccinations from a sizeable part of the population.

Governments across the US are running lotteries with milliondollar prizes and scholarships as well giving out beer and pastries to coax those avoiding vaccinations to get their jabs.

According to some media reports, the US may have as many as 500 million surplus doses of vaccines in the coming months.

Bengaluru (IANS): Facing a controversy after a Google Search with the keywords “ugliest language in India” showed “Kannada” in the results, Google India said on Thursday that it is not the reflection of the company, as it apologised for misunderstanding and hurting any sentiments.

The Search result sparked an outrage among the netizens earlier in the day, with the Karnataka government threatening to issue a legal notice to the company.

“Search isn’t always perfect.

Sometimes, the way content is described on the Internet can yield surprising results to specific queries,” a Google India spokesperson told IANS in a statement.

“We know this is not ideal, but we take swift corrective action when we are made aware of an issue and are continually working to improve our algorithms. Naturally, these are not reflective of the opinions of Google, and we apologise for the misunderstanding and hurting any sentiments,” the company spokesperson added.

Minister for Kannada, Culture and Forest in Karnataka, Aravind Limbavali, tweeted: “Kannada language has a history of its own, having come into existence as many as 2,500 years ago! It has been the pride of Kannadigas all through these two-and-a-half millennia.

If Kannada is now called ugliest language in India, it is merely an attempt by Google to insult this pride of Kannadigas,” he said in the tweet.

Supreme Court quashes case registered against journalist Vinod Dua

New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court on Thursday quashed an FIR [First Information Report] registered by Himachal Pradesh Police against senior journalist Vinod Dua in connection with his comments critical of the government’s handling of COVID-19 lockdown on his YouTube channel.

A bench of Justices U.U. Lalit

and Vineet Saran said the court has quashed the proceedings and FIR, as it emphasized that every journalist should be protected as per judgment in the matter, Kedar Nath Singh Versus state of Bihar (1962).

The top court while upholding the validity of Section 124A of IPC (sedition), a Constitution bench of the top court had in Kedarnath Singh’s case (1962)

restricted the scope of the law by prescribing certain safeguards. The court had then said, “a citizen has a right to say whatever he likes about the government or its policies but should not incite violence.”

The Bench declined to entertain Dua’s prayer for setting up of a high-level committee in each state for prior vetting

of sedition charges against journalists of a 10-year standing. The bench said, “It will be directly encroaching upon the legislative domain.”

On June 14, 2020, the top court had protected Dua from arrest on his plea to quash the May 6 FIR. The complaint was filed by a BJP leader Ajay Shyam against Dua accusing him of instigating violence against the government by allegedly spreading fake news.

Other media reports state: “The court acknowledged the submission made by Dua, who is currently recovering from COVID-19, that “there is a recent trend against the media where State governments who

“The judgment came as a

“The verdict on Thursday may spell a push-back from the court against the indiscriminate number of sedition cases being filed against critical journalists, citizens, lawyers and activists. Recently, another Bench of the Supreme Court, in a separate case on sedition charges levelled against two Telugu channels by the Andhra government, had said it was time to define the limits of the sedition law.”

The departments covered under the notification by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) include RAW, IB, DRI, CEIB, ED, NCB, ARC, Special Frontier Force, BSF, CRPF, ITBP, CISF, NSG, Assam Rifles, SSB, DG Income Tax (investigation), NTRO, FIU, SPG, DRDO, Border Road Development Organisation, NSC, CBI, NIA and Natgrid.

These rules are part of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Amendment Rules 2020, notified on May 31, 2021.

The material that cannot be published by former government servants includes domain of the organisation including any reference or

information about any personnel and his designation and expertise or knowledge gained by virtue of having worked in that organisation.

In addition, it includes sensitive information, the disclosure of which would prejudicially affect the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security, strategic, scientific or economic interests of the state or relation with a foreign state or which would lead to incitement of an offence.

“The Head of the Organisation shall vest with the authority to decide as to whether the proposed material for publication is sensitive or non-sensitive and whether it falls in the domain of the organisation”, the notification said.

Chidambaram accuses government of needlessly delaying approval to vaccines

New Delhi (IANS): Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday accused the central government of needlessly delaying approval to COVID-19 vaccines in the country for many months except in the case of Covaxin, Covishield and Sputnik V. “Our suspicion that the government had not approved any vaccine other than Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V, has been proved correct,” Chidambaram said.

“Why did government go through the charade of negotiating quantities with Pfizer and Moderna without first giving Emergency Use Approval (EUA) to their vaccines? Why has it taken 8-9 months for the government to decide to give approval when the US and

“Remember, [former prime minister] Dr Manmohan Singh had made this specific suggestion in his letter which got a rude reply from the Union Health Minister!” he added. In mid-April, Singh’s letter to the Centre suggested ramping up the vaccination drive as key to battling the pandemic, asking the government to “resist the temptation to look at the

absolute numbers being vaccinated, and focus instead on the percentage of the population vaccinated”.

The former prime minister had also added that India currently had vaccinated only a small fraction of its population, adding that with the right policy design, “we can do much better and very quickly.”

Experts from the National Institute of Malaria Research and the Indian Council of Medical Research, on Wednesday slammed the government for poor planning of the homegrown vaccine production and deployment, as a result of which “India doesn’t have enough vaccines to go around with”, they said.

Saw bodies tossed into river, any sedition case against channel, quips Supreme Court

New Delhi (IANS): The Supreme Court, during the hearing on Centre’s vaccine policy on Monday, referred to the visuals aired by TV channels of dead bodies being dumped into a river in Uttar Pradesh as it sarcastically asked if any sedition cases has been filed against the channels.

A bench comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud, L. Nageswara Rao and S Ravindra Bhat noted: “Yesterday, we saw pictures of a dead body being thrown into the river.”

Chandrachud added: “Yes, there was a picture of body being thrown into river.” In a sarcastic remark, he added that: “I do not know whether complaint of sedition been filed against the news channel for showing it.”

The bench made this remark when amicus curiae in the matter, senior advocate Meenakshi Arora submitted that guidelines had to be formulated for the

dignified handling of bodies of those who have succumbed to COVID-19. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, pointed out that there is a separate suo moto case taken by the top court which heard issues connected with the proper treatment of the COVID-19 patients and dignified handling of the bodies in the hospitals.

The remarks were made before the hearing of two Telugu news channels - TV5 and ABN Andhra Jyoti - who moved the top court seeking quashing of FIRs registered against them by Andhra Pradesh Police. The same bench taking a strong view on attempts to muzzle the fourth estate, called for defining “the limits of sedition”, as it put on hold coercive action against two news channels.

The bench said that the AP government’s action of filing sedition cases against the channels is muffling channels. “It’s time

we define the limits of sedition,” it said and expressed prima facie that FIRs are an attempt to muzzle media freedom.

However, Chandrachud clarified that his remarks on sedition, made during the COVID-19 case hearing, were in connection with this matter involving the two news channels.

The channels moved the top court seeking quashing of the FIRs [First Information Reports] and also contempt petitions contending that Andhra Police action violated the court’s April 30 order, which emphasised on restraining prosecution against citizens, who ventilate grievances in connection with Covid issues.

The bench noted there was a need to define the scope of offences under Section 124A (sedition) and 153A (promotion of communal hatred) under the IPC, especially in the context of media freedom.

‘Missing’ posters of Sidhu surface in Amritsar Chandigarh (IANS): With former Punjab Cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu spending more time at his ancestral house in Patiala of late, posters saying “Sidhu is missing” from his assembly constituency in

Amritsar (East) surfaced on Wednesday, promising Rs 50,000 reward for anyone who ‘finds’ the MLA. An NGO, Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Sewa Society, has put up the posters titled ‘Gumshuda Di Talaash’

(Search for the Missing). Similar posters were seen in Amritsar earlier also.

State Congress leaders told IANS that for the past three to four months, Sidhu and his wife Navjot Kaur have been staying at the former’s ancestral house in Patiala, the home constituency of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

Their daughter is reportedly staying alone in the Amritsar residence.

The residents of the Joda Phatak area in Sidhu’s constituency, who lost their family members when a speeding train crushed them as they were watching Dusshera celebrations in 2018, are upset as the Congress leader, then a Cabinet minister, and his wife had promised to provide jobs to the eligible family members of those killed in the accident.

The railways had said that it was not responsible for the tragedy.

Where will Canadians motor to when the restrictions are lifted? Leger poll results Toronto, ON - May 31, 2021 – Canada is known for its natural beauty and stunning landscape’s and has long been a favourite destination for tourists from around the world.

And, while Canadians have always enjoyed the open road, the pandemic has fueled a newfound love for the outdoors and a greater desire to get back behind the wheel and explore their own country, according to a new poll conducted by Leger Marketing on behalf of Toyota Canada.

British Columbians are slightly more likely than

others to make concessions when it comes to their travel, with 79% stating the pandemic changed their vacation plans and

the vast majority (89%) planning to stay closer to home than usual this summer.

Alberta residents are slight-

ly more likely to hit the open road, with 61% planning a road trip this summer. And, on par with the rest of the country, almost half (48%) of Albertans planning a road trip noted camping would be their preferred outdoor activity.

Relatively on par with the country, residents of Saskatchewan and Manitoba are true road trip warriors, with 35% willing to drive more than 12 hours from their homes for their vacation. Not surprisingly, almost two-thirds (63%) of Saskatchewan and Manitoba respondents say fuel efficiency is the car feature

they care about most when taking a summer road trip.

Roughly in line with the rest of the country, Ontarians are open to driving a little farther from their home this summer, with 35% willing to drive 7 or more hours.

Quebecers seem to love their cars the most, with more than half (58%) stating the pandemic has caused them to miss driving and 67% feeling that their car is a part of their family.

Atlantic Canadians feel most connected to nature, with the majority stating the pandemic has given

them a greater appreciation for the outdoors (85%) and for domestic travel (79%).

“It’s not surprising that, over a year into the pandemic, Canadians are more eager than ever to get back behind the wheel and explore our beautiful country as soon as its safe to do so,” says Stephen Beatty, Vice President, Corporate at Toyota Canada. “We are so fortunate to live in a country that has so much to offer in terms of scenic drives and outdoor adventure, and it’s wonderful to see an increased appreciation for the outdoors.”

Economic Recovery Drives CLI Higher in Q1 2021

to surging demand and prices for wood products, and a 6 per cent increase in wholesale trade activity were the main contributors from the economic activity component of the CLI. Employment in key commercial real estate sectors such as finance, insurance, real estate (FIRE) and leasing increased by about 13,000 jobs in the first quarter. While our office employment measure is now at an all-time high, it is unclear what the implications are for office space demand given the uncertainty

around the near-term outlook for a return to traditional office environments. Despite very strong sales activity, manufacturing employment fell by about 6,500 jobs. That decline may be a temporary phenomenon owing to the third wave of COVID-19 and its impact on manufacturing work.

The CLI’s financial component was positive in the first quarter of 2021, as REIT prices rose to their highest level since the fourth quarter of 2019 and risk spreads continued to narrow.

Go natural to debut your new hair colour

THE American star of the silver screen, Jean Harlow, was known as the “Blonde Bombshell”. She once remarked, “If it wasn’t for my hair, Hollywood wouldn’t know me.” But did the blonde hair come at a huge price? Harlow was dead at the age of 26.

Set the tone with a positive attitude for going natural. And natural hair – meaning whatever Mother Nature gave you – is beautiful.

Do you make a habit of dying your hair? Now that lockdowns are easing and you cannot wait to get a haircut, you might want to think twice about permanent hair dye and chemical hair straighteners. Some recent studies have raised health concerns.

The practice of dying hair goes back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome when terrible concoctions were used to alter hair colour, both for beauty and to show rank on the battlefield.

In years past, animal studies questioned the safety of hair dyes. But research on humans produced inconsistent findings. More recently, studies are yielding findings that should be enough to make people pause.

Researchers for a study published in International Journal of Cancer analyzed data from the “Sister Study”. This ongoing study involves more than 50,000 women between the ages of 35 and 74, all having a sister with breast cancer.

Having a sister with breast cancer placed them at higher risk for developing breast cancer themselves. But researchers used the cohort to study the cancer risk of hair dye. Although all participants share the same family history, only some of them used hair dye and straighteners, allowing for interesting comparisons.

What did epidemiologist Dr. Alexandra White find? She is an investigator with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, studying risk factors for breast cancer.

She found that white women who frequently used permanent hair dyes had a 7% higher risk of breast cancer and black women a 45% higher risk. For women who frequently used chemical straighteners the risk was 30%, with no race difference.

What happened to Harlow? Apparently, Harlow insisted she was a natural blonde. But one Hollywood stylist, Alfred Pagano, knew otherwise. He reported that to make her platinum blonde, peroxide, ammonia, Clorox and Lux flakes were used. Whether his account is accurate, we will never know. But Clorox mixed with ammonia produces the noxious gas, hydrochloric acid, not a healthy mixture.

The hair treatments took a toll, and when Harlow’s hair began to fall out, she turned to a wig.

In short order, she was dead of kidney failure.

Today, hair products are not all the same, and they can contain any of more than 5,000 chemicals, some of which are known to cause cancer in lab animals being fed large amount of these dyes over time. White notes that “For chemical hair straighteners, one of the big concerns is formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen.” Products that do not overtly contain formaldehyde may yet release this hazardous substance when the product is heated.
