Brampton MP Ramesh Sangha kicked out of Liberal caucus for 'baseless and dangerous' claims ONTARIO’S Brampton Centre MP Ramesh Sangha, 76, who had accused the Liberal government of “pandering� to Sikh separatists and hurting Canada’s relationship with India in 2019, has been kicked out of the Liberal Party caucus for making “baseless and dangerous accusations� against a number of his colleagues.

Chief government whip Mark Holland, who was made aware of Sangha’s accusations last week, said in a statement on Monday: “As we have made clear time and time again, we will not tolerate conspiracy theories, or dangerous and unfounded rhetoric about Parliamentarians or other Canadians. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for many Canadians to experience suspicions because of their background; we all know where this can lead. The Liberal caucus continues to stand firm against racism and intolerance.�

Sangha was removed Monday afternoon after the whip consulted with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Sangha’s comments were made in a panel discussion on Y Media, a Canadian-based Punjabi-language outlet. The Toronto Star reported that they were first exposed by another English-language online outlet that serves the Sikh and Punjabi diaspora, Baaz.

In a story published last Saturday, Baaz reported that Sangha “parroted debunked Indian media accusations about former minister Navdeep Bains’s departure from politics, including unsubstantiated links to ‘extremism.’�

In the Y Media interview that aired January 21, Sangha appears to suggest both Bains and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan sympathize with those who advocate for the creation of Khalistan. “If you declare that you’re an extremist, or Khalistani, and as we have seen to the south of us in America, that leadership with

He said he did not regret the remarks, and called Holland’s statement hurtful.

Sangha told the Toronto Star: “I’m not against any individual, I’m not against Navdeep Bains or Mr. Sajjan or any other MPs who are proponents of Khalistan. I don’t say they are extremist.� But he said he opposed “extremist ideology� that calls for a separate Sikh state in the Punjab region of India. He called that a threat to Canada’s national security.

Ramesh Sangha was first elected as MP from Brampton Centre in 2015. Before being elected, Sanga established his own law practice in Brampton. He came to Canada more than 20 years ago. He earned his law degree from the University of Windsor.

The Toronto Star reported that the Y Media interviewer challenged Sangha about his statements, saying there is no evidence of what he suggests, and says his claims are the product of “rumours� spread by Indian media.

But Sangha insisted, and said he would be happy only after Bains and Sajjan deny having separatist sentiments.

Sangha later told the Toronto Star that he did not get a fair hearing. He said Trudeau seemed “annoyed,� didn’t give him time to explain himself, and seemed to take “very personal� offence at the criticism Sangha had levelled at his fellow MPs.

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced that the government will introduce mandatory COVID-19 testing upon arrival at airports. This will be in addition to the pre-boarding requirement for a negative COVID-19 test.

Following the test at the airports, travellers will have to stay three days at a designated hotel until they receive their result. The hotel stays will cost travellers more than $2,000. If the traveller’s test is negative, they will be able to complete their 14-day quarantine at home under significantly increased surveillance and enforcement.

However, if travellers test positive, they will have to complete their 14-day quarantine in a designated government facility to make sure they’re not carrying variants of “particular concern.”

Also, the government and airlines have announced a deal to suspend flights to Mexico and the Caribbean. The airlines will co-ordinate return flights with travellers

currently abroad.

PREMIER John Horgan said: “We welcome the new international travel measures announced by the federal government today.

These steps will strengthen the health and safety screenings at our borders and help keep British Columbians and all Canadians safer.

“Our government had been calling for mandatory quarantine measures to restrict international travel further. We trust the federal government’s efforts to monitor and follow up with these travellers will be vigilant.

“These new measures build on British Columbia’s leadership when we brought in requirements for all international travellers to have self-isolation plans in April 2020.

“Our message about non-essential travel remains the same: if you do not need to travel, don’t. I continue to speak with the prime minister and premiers across the

country about ways we can continue to limit non-essential interprovincial travel.

“With vaccines on the way, we look forward to the day when we can once again welcome visitors to B.C. safely. Until then, we ask everyone to please stay home.”

CONSERVATIVE Leader Erin O’Toole said in a statement: “Conservatives have always encouraged Canadians to follow federal and provincial public health guidelines. We were the first to call upon the government to secure the border at the start of the pandemic – the Liberals were too slow to act. We’re now a year into the pandemic and we aren’t using what we’ve learned from the first wave.

“Lockdowns and restrictions were put in place to buy governments time to get permanent solutions like vaccines, rapid testing, variant testing capacity, and therapeutics – these tools now exist. The problem is, Justin Trudeau hasn’t suc-

ceeded in bringing them to widespread use in Canada. We need to be using these tools to reduce quarantine times, like our allies around the world are doing.

“We’re here today because they’ve failed to secure and use these tools. The Liberal government needs to tell Canadians when and how new COVID-19 restrictions can be eased – what percentage of Canadians need to be vaccinated?

“Canadian airline jobs are in jeopardy. We continue to see more airline workers lose their jobs and regional routes close – they have no idea when support from the Liberal government is coming, if at all.

“By now, Canadians should know when things are going to get better. The Liberals can’t keep asking Canadians to sacrifice more without being clear when restrictions can be eased. Today, Conservatives are calling on the Liberals to give Canadians a clear plan and the information they deserve.”

Calgary’s Amarpreet Singh Sandhu charged after CBSA seizure of record amount of meth in December ON December 25, 2020, while facilitating the entry of essential goods at the Coutts, Alberta port of entry, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers referred a semi-truck hauling produce for further inspection.

While examining the shipment, officers uncovered 228.14 kg of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $28.5 million. This amount of methamphetamine translates to 2.28 million individual dosages.

The Coutts border crossing is located on Highway 4 approximately 109 km southeast of Lethbridge. This is the CBSA’s largest seizure of methamphetamine at a land border crossing on record across Canada.

The previous CBSA record for amount of methamphetamine seized at a land border crossing was approximately 200 kg, from an incident on December 24, 2019, at the Ambassador Bridge port of entry in Windsor, Ontario. Methamphetamine is a powerful synthetic stimulant. It is illegal, highly addictive, and very dangerous to a person’s health.

CBSA officers arrested the driver and turned the individual and the evidence over to Alberta RCMP. After a thorough investigation, the RCMP Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) has since charged Amarpreet Singh Sandhu, 38, of Calgary with importation of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Sandhu was released from custody on January 14, and is scheduled to appear in court on February 11 at the Lethbridge

FEDERAL NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was on Friday joined by Mustafa Farooq, Chief Executive Officer of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), to mark the fourth anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting.

On the evening of January 29, 2017, a gunman killed six and injured 19 others at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City. People died just because they were Muslim. To mark this day, Singh and Farooq renewed their calls for the Liberal government to take action to tackle hate in our communities.

Singh also announced that NDP MP Matthew Green and his team are working on legislation that will give more tools to the federal government to dismantle white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups. At the sentencing hearing of the Quebec mosque shooter, it was revealed that he was obsessively reading news about Donald Trump, right-wing pundits and conspiracy theorists in the weeks leading up to the attack. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that alt-

right groups were a threat in Canada, but he has not taken concrete action to tackle this threat. He pledged to fight online hate, but instead of holding social media accountable, he decided to trust social media companies with voluntary measures, according to Singh.

“We know that Canada has a growing white supremacist movement that has been emboldened by events in the U.S. and by hate online,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau must move beyond nice words and take concrete actions. People who face islamophobia, xenophobia and all forms of discrimination shouldn’t feel alone in this fight. They deserve to know that their government is on their side. I am on your side.”

Earlier this week, thanks to the

support of hundreds of thousands of Canadians, all parties passed a unanimous consent motion tabled by the NDP calling for the Proud Boys to be banned and for more actions to dismantle white supremacy groups in Canada. The Liberal government must now move past that motion, and take concrete actions to protect our communities, added Singh.

“All elected officials in government should be taking action against white supremacist violence. That means looking at all options, including legislative reform, to combat the growth of this threat. We look forward to this important conversation to hold all parties accountable in our push for solutions that will dismantle white supremacist groups,” said Farooq.

Fourth anniversary of fatal shooting at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday issued the following statement to mark the fourth anniversary of the fatal shooting at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec: “Four years ago tonight, a terrorist attack at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec in Ste-Foy claimed the lives of six people and seriously injured nineteen others.

“On this sombre anniversary, we honour the memory of the victims of this hateful act of Islamophobia and racism. Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones who continue to suffer, and to all the residents of Quebec City whose community has been forever changed by this tragedy.

“Today, we also remember the first responders who did everything they could, with courage and dedication, to save congregants and ease their pain. And we recognize the solidarity that Quebecers and all Canadians showed with Muslim com-

munities across the country in denouncing this senseless act of violence.

“To honour the victims of this tragedy and continue the fight against Islamophobia, hatred, and discrimination, we announced yesterday our intent to declare January 29 as ‘National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia.’

“Eliminating Islamophobia is a key pillar of Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy. In 2019, we launched the Digital Citizen Initiative, which aims to combat online hate and help Canadians better understand disinformation and its impacts on our society. In addition, we are continuing to ensure that Canadians feel safe in their places of worship and in their communities, through investments from the Communities at Risk: Security Infrastructure Program. Our government also continues to protect communi-

ties from gun violence. For example, we strengthened gun control last year by prohibiting over 1,500 models and variants of assault-style firearms and some of their components. Canadian Federation of Fiji Organizations fundraising for victims of Cyclone Yasa

THE Canadian Federation of Fiji Organizations (CFOFO) has been fundraising for the unfortunate victims of Cyclone Yasa, a top category five storm, that devastated the Fiji Islands last month.

Shannon Permal, Chair of CFOFO, told The VOICE: “This cyclone has established itself as one of the strongest natural disasters to have affected the Fiji Islands within the last few years. Currently, our organization has been collecting donations via e-transfer and mail-in cheques to be able to send to TISI Sangam Society of Fiji – a reputable non-profit organization operat-

ing across Fiji.”

Permal added: “So far, our organization has raised and sent FJ$15,668.24 (Canadian $10,000)

to TISI Sangam Society of Fiji, which will further aid in providing these services and resources in the affected areas. We are very

grateful to those who have contributed thus far, but recovery is a long process hence why we are still collecting more donations to send again in mid-February.”

“In situations like natural disasters, it is usually best to provide monetary aid anyway; Fijians citizens experiencing this disaster are better able to decide what is of greatest need. … Fiji Sangam has currently been providing disaster relief to the greatly affected areas in the form of food ration distribution, getting children back into schools with the supplies they need such as stationary, uniforms

and bags, and run lunch programs within the schools themselves,” Permal said.

22-year-old man dead, another young male injured in Langley targeted shooting

THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said on Wednesday that around 11:38 p.m. on Tuesday, Langley RCMP were called to 207 Street and 53A Avenue where they found a 22-year-old man with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was a second man in his early twenties who was transported to hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.

At around 11:52 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a complaint of a burning vehicle in the area of 180 Street and

19A Avenue in the area of Redwood Park in south Surrey. IHIT believes its likely related to the homicide.

IHIT Sgt. Frank Jang said that the victim was known to police. IHIT believes that his murder, that has all the hallmarks of a targeted hit, may be linked to the drug trade. However, there is nothing in the victim’s record that would indicate that the murder is linked to the ongoing Lower Mainland Gang Conflict.

Jang said that police need to people to help them solve this crime and they need dashcam video from

the area of 207 Street and 53A Avenue in Langley, and the area of 180 Street and 19A Avenue in south Surrey.

Gang-related incidents of violence in the past month

Multiple checks, drug investigations, vehicles seized in targeted gang enforcement in Surrey THE Surrey RCMP Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) has undertaken numerous checks, drug investigations and vehicle seizures over the last 13 days of targeted enforcement against gang activity in Surrey.

Surrey RCMP said on Tuesday that they are currently engaged in an action plan designed to disrupt and suppress gang activity in the city. This action plan was implemented in response to the increase in gang related violence across the region earlier this month.

Between January 11 and 24, the Surrey RCMP Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) conducted: – 26 establishment checks for the Inadmissible Patron Program (IPP) – 11 curfew checks of Lower Mainland Gang Conflict participants currently living in Surrey – 28 Outlaw Motorcycle Gang clubhouse checks – 11 drug investigations that resulted in the seizure of five vehicles – Enhanced police presence at three funerals of individuals connected to the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict to ensure the safety of attendees. “Violent crime and gang violence continues to remain a priority for Surrey RCMP,� said Inspector Mike Hall, Surrey RCMP Proactive Enforcement Officer. “We will continue our efforts to suppress gang activity in our community and provide ongoing updates on our efforts.�

Abbotsford shooting at Purcell and Wells Gray avenues’ intersection

ON Tuesday at 10:44 p.m., Abbotsford Police patrol officers responded to the intersection of Purcell and Wells Gray avenues for reports of shots fired. Officers located bullet casings, however, the vehicles and suspects involved in this incident had fled the area. Witnesses said that two vehicles were seen speeding from the area.

Investigators are in the preliminary stages of this investigation, speaking to witnesses and collecting CCTV. It is believed at this time that this is a targeted shooting, but the motive is unknown.

Abbotsford Police Major Crime detectives have taken conduct of this investigation.

Liberals hold lead in vote intention as unfavourable views of Conservative leader intensify – 51% say top priority for federal government is getting COVID-19 under control – Conservatives have fallen slightly behind in B.C., and trail by a notable margin in Ontario and Quebec AS the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hints at the probability of a 2021 election, the leaders of both front-running parties find themselves under everincreasing scrutiny.

Trudeau finds his conduct on COVID-19 management – especially vaccine rollout – under the microscope, but Canadians are also evaluating the performance of Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole.

And while the Liberal leader sees neither significant improvement nor deterioration in the way Canadians perceive him, views of his main opponent are trending in a more negative direction.

New public opinion polling data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute finds nearly half (47%) in this country have an unfavourable view of O’Toole – a 16-point increase since last September when fewer than

one-third (31%) felt the same. Onein-five (22%) remain unsure about him.

These new data also find the incumbent Liberals holding a five-point advantage, 35 per cent to 30 per cent, over the Conservatives. The NDP receives support from one-in-five Canadians (20%).

Abbotsford home invasion on Adelaide Street ON January 27 at 3:28 a.m., Abbotsford Police patrol officers were flagged down by a woman who advised that she was the victim of a home invasion. Officers responded to a residence in the 2600-block of Adelaide Street to find that four adult occupants had been con-

fronted in the home by multiple masked men.

The suspects forced their way into the basement suite and tied up one female. The suspects then proceeded upstairs, bear-sprayed the other occupants and demanded money.

A physical altercation ensued between the

suspects and one male resident. The resident was subsequently taken to hospital by BC Ambulance Service to receive medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, including a broken wrist.

Nothing appears to have been stolen in what

investigators believe to be a targeted incident.

15 new buses to more than quadruple TransLink’s battery-electric bus fleet

TRANSLINK has awarded a contract to Nova Bus to bring 15 more batteryelectric buses to its fleet. This order will more than quadruple its current battery-electric bus fleet, increasing its total from four to 19.

TransLink said that this acquisition is a critical step towards achieving its aggressive approach to its Low Carbon Fleet Strategy, which includes: * Reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent by 2030. * Fully electrifying route 100 (22nd Street / Marpole Loop). * Replacing all retiring conventional diesel buses with battery-electric buses. * Transitioning to a fleet operating entirely on renewable energy by 2050.

The 15 new battery-electric buses are expected to arrive and begin rolling into service on Route 100 in 2022.

The $16 million contract is funded through the Federal Gas Tax Fund, with funding allotted through the Metro Vancouver Gas Tax Fund.

Surrey NDP MLAs need to ensure funding is restored to Safer Schools Together, to help youth develop positive social skills and to create safer communities.”

Overall crime in Surrey down 14% in 2020 SURREY RCMP announced on Thursday that crime in the city continues to trend downward with a 14% decrease in overall Criminal Code offences for 2020.

Statistics for the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2020 and the year-to-date totals have now been published on the Surrey RCMP website.

Violent crime decreased in 2020 both in Q4 (-19%) and for the year overall (-9%).

Homicides saw a 43% decrease from 2019 (nine fewer murders), while attempted murders saw no change.

Surrey had 34 shots-fired calls in 2020 compared to 45 in 2019, which is a 24% reduction.

This said, the violence associated to the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict increased in late 2020/ early 2021 with homicides throughout the region including Surrey, noted Surrey RCMP. The Surrey RCMP Gang

This targeted plan includes curfew checks, Outlaw Motorcycle Gang clubhouse checks, Inadmissible Patron Program checks, and targeted provincial and federal statute investigations.

Drug trafficking is the primary criminal enterprise

of gangs and continues to be an investigative priority for Surrey RCMP. Many significant drug seizures were made throughout the year (see 2020 news releases), which helped to disrupt gang and drug trafficking activity in the city.

The purchase and use of drugs continued to negatively impact the health of Surrey citizens. Surrey RCMP officers used Nal-

oxone when attending 87 suspected overdose files in 2020.

Although robberies declined by 23% in Q4, there was an overall increase for the year of 11%. A number of robberies in 2020 resulted from the use of online marketplace applications.

As such, Surrey RCMP increased education and public awareness efforts on this trend throughout the year, and it continues to be a priority for its Robbery Unit this year.

There was a 6% decrease in sexual offences in Q4 compared to the same period the year previous.

However, there have been a persistent number of sexual extortions throughout 2020. Consequently, additional public awareness initiatives were undertaken throughout the year cautioning internet users of cyber crime trends and promoting internet safety.

The COVID-19 pandemic

introduced a variety of unique duties for Surrey RCMP. In response to the new responsibility for enforcing BC public health orders, Surrey RCMP partnered with Surrey Bylaw Enforcement to form the COVID-19 Compliance and Enforcement Team (CCET). Only 2% of the team’s thousands of compliance checks in 2020 were found to be noncompliant, and 48 violation tickets were issued. CCET continues to provide guidance and education to local businesses, faith-based organizations, parks and residences to ensure compliance with COVID-19 health orders.

Overall property crime declined by 16% for the year, and 25% in Q4. All areas of property crime showed decreases in 2020, including a 17% reduction in break and enters, a 19% decline in theft from vehicles, and a 2% decrease in fraud.

Breach/bail violations increased by 10% in 2020, reflecting the work of the High Risk Target Team and Strike Force Target Team, who work to ensure that the most prolific and violent offenders in our city are complying with their court-ordered conditions.

“I’m impressed with how our officers and support staff adapted so quickly to new challenges presented by the pandemic,” says Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards, Surrey RCMP Officer in Charge. Despite those challenges we were able to implement important COVID-19 safety measures and decrease crime across the city.

Surrey RCMP said its quarterly crime stat report is intended to create better awareness and understanding of the incidence of crime across the city and help inform community engagement and crime prevention.

Two dangerous impaired driving incidents in Surrey within 24 hours SURREY RCMP said on Friday that they investigated two dangerous impaired driving incidents within 24 hours: one in Whalley in which a man allegedly caused a collision after driving into oncoming traffic, and the other in Newton which resulted in a firearm being seized.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. on January 25, Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision near the intersection of 128 Street and 102 Avenue. The collision involved a grey Acura sedan that allegedly drove into oncoming traffic and crashed into a black Nissan sedan. The drivers of both vehicles sustained minor injuries.

While interacting with the driver of the Acura sedan, officers observed drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle which included a used syringe and spoon with residue, as well as suspected prescription drugs. The driver exhibited physical signs of being impaired by drugs and was subsequently arrested for impaired driving. The man was issued a 24-hour notice of prohibition and later released pending further investigation.

Then, shortly before 6 p.m. on January 26, a concerned citizen reported a man and woman passed out in a running vehicle in the 8000-block of 128 Street.

Upon arrival, officers found a

man in the driver’s seat with a weapon in his waistband and a firearm inside the vehicle. During interactions with the driver, the officer noted signs of impairment by drugs. The driver was subsequently arrested for impaired driving and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

As the investigation progressed, the vehicle was searched and officers seized a handgun, ammunition, approximately 6 grams of suspected cocaine, and a few hundred dollars cash. Officers also located open alcohol inside the vehicle.

“It’s concerning to see two impaired driving cases involving what we suspect is the use of hard drugs, within a 24-hour period,” said Sgt. Elenore Sturko.

“The second case in particular had multiple elements of concern. We’re grateful to have received the report from the citizen, which ultimately led to the seizure of a dangerous weapon and had an immediate impact on public safety.”

Two teenagers in custody for impersonating police officers in Langley

ON Wednesday night, Langley RCMP received two separate reports of a Dodge Ram truck with blue and red flashing lights in the windshield. The first incident was reported just after 9 p.m. in Langley City and the second took place shortly before midnight.

Shortly after midnight, officers from the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) traveling on Fraser Highway

in Langley observed a truck matching the description speeding westbound between 232 and 240 Streets. The vehicle stopped for police on 222 Street.

Both occupants were arrested and the alternating blue and red light was found on the front window of the truck. Also found in the search incidental to arrest were multiple cell phones, nearly $3,500 in cash and what

is believed to be bud marijuana. The truck and contents were seized.

The two males, a 19-year-old from Langley and an 18-year-old from Burnaby, were held in custody.

The initial complainant believed the occupants to be impersonating police officers and saw them pull over a Toyota Corolla.

The Dodge pulled alongside the Toyota and

it is believed they had a brief exchange prior to pulling away.

Investigators would like to speak with the driver of the Toyota Corolla who was seen stopped in Langley City as well as any other motorists who may have had interaction with these two males. Any such witnesses are asked to call Langley RCMP at 604-5323200.

Surrey RCMP seeking witnesses, dash-cam footage in two graffiti incidents SURREY RCMP are seeking witnesses and dash-cam footage related to two mischief incidents that occurred in South Surrey.

Shortly before 1 p.m. on January 25, Surrey RCMP received a report of graffiti spray-painted along the gym and courtyard at Semiahmoo Secondary School, located in the 1700-block of 148 Street. A second report was received of graffiti spray-painted on a church in the 14800-block of 24 Avenue (see photo).

Officers believe the two incidents may be related and occurred sometime during the evening of January 23.

VPD officer suffers broken leg in mask dispute A Vancouver Police officer suffered a broken leg when he was allegedly assaulted by a man who refused to wear a mask inside the Vancouver Law Courts on Tuesday.

“The suspect walked into the courthouse at 800 Hornby Street without a mask. He was asked by the on-duty sheriff to put on a mask, but the man allegedly refused and also refused to leave the building,” said Constable Tania Visintin on Wednesday.

Two Vancouver Police officers who were in the building were alerted to the incident and advised the man of the mask policy. The man was argumentative and physically aggressive with police.

He allegedly kicked one of the officers and attempted to reach for his firearm. While officers

attempted to get the man into custody, he fell on an officer, breaking his leg.

“This man showed complete disregard for the provisions set out by the Provincial Health Officer,” said Visintin. “This was a senseless confrontation that did not need to escalate to the point where someone was seriously injured.”

The officer with the broken leg was taken to hospital for treatment and released the same day.

He could be off duty for several months.

Police are recommending charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, assault on a peace officer, and disarming a peace officer against a 53-year-old man from Vancouver. The man was also issued a $230 violation ticket for failing to wear a mask in an indoor public space.

BC Care Providers Association: Ernst and Young long-term care report was not acted upon in a timely fashion

THE BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) said that the recommendations made through the Ernst and Young report released on Monday, and those which were outlined in a report made public by in November of last year, identified multiple overlapping themes and follow-up actions.

The public release E&Y report – which was filed on the eve of Election Day and therefore was not acted upon in a timely fashion – should not have been delayed until late January. Taking action on recommendations provided in these reports could have mitigated some of the impacts of the current wave of the

pandemic, the BCCPA said.

Issues identified in the E&Y report include PPE shortages, communication challenges and inconsistent responses across the province’s health authorities. These concerns and others were previously brought forward in the association’s report titled “Review of

The Response To COVID-19 In Seniors Care and Living.”

The BCCPA said that since March 2020, it has been working collaboratively with the Ministry of Health, health authorities, care providers and multiple sector stakeholders to address many of these issues. Improvements have been made in several areas such as in PPE procurement. However, there is more work to be done — particularly in the area of coordinating communications and collaborating on solutions between the Provincial Health Office and sector stakeholders.

The BCCPA said that the fact that it and others who were

consulted for the E&Y report received the report at the same time as the general public speaks to that fact.

The E&Y report also makes clear that care home operators need assurances that the cost overruns they have incurred to fight the spread of the coronavirus will be covered by the Ministry of Health. Large debtloads currently carried by multiple non-profit operators put these care homes at risk.

In addition to the recommendations outlined, the association said it is continuing to ask for regular and consistent information sharing between Public Health and the senior care

sector. It added that as it has indicated before, the long-term care sector is the most impacted by COVID-19, yet little if any contact between the Provincial Health Office and the sector has happened despite repeated invitations to consult with one another.

“Had this report been made public alongside the report released by BCCPA and feedback from other groups, it may have led to implementing important changes such as deploying rapid testing in care homes and helped prevent the deadly spread of SARS-CoV-2,” the BCCPA said.

Bond added that despite Health Minister Adrian Dix characterizing the report as minor, there are critical issues highlighted within it accompanied by policy and operational recommendations that could

have ensured LTC homes were better prepared to mitigate the second wave of COVID-19 risks.

“Any report that deals with how we improve care for our most vulnerable seniors should hardly be described as minor, as the minister attempted to characterize it. Dozens of organizations were consulted about what could be done differently and expected to see the report long before now,” said Bond.

“It shouldn’t take a reporter to get such an important report like this released to the public.

The NDP government needs to explain to British Columbians, especially to those who have loved ones in long-term care during this pandemic, why this LTC review sat on a shelf for over three months and why some of the issues raised in the report continue today.”

Federal NDP: Scathing internal audit reveals significant shortcomings in federal pandemic response NDP Health Critic Don Davies on Monday called on the Liberal government to take immediate action to address the serious shortcomings identified in a scathing internal audit of the Public Health Agency of Canada’s (PHAC) COVID-19 response. The documents were disclosed through an opposition motion for production passed in October.

“This deeply disturbing report exposes extensive disarray and sometimes chaos at the Public Health Agency of Canada throughout the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Worse, it appears that many problems still exist,” said Davies. “The federal government must take immediate action to close the critical skills and capacity gaps identified by the auditors.”

The audit revealed a serious and troubling lack of capacity at PHAC. The report noted limited public health expertise – including epidemiologists, psychologists, behavioural scientists and physicians – at senior levels.

The audit also found a lack of emergency response management expertise and capacity within the Agency.

“PHAC was established after SARS to provide a clear focal point for federal leadership and accountability in managing public health emergencies,” said Davies. “And yet, we learned this week that the Agency has been hollowed out to the point that it lacks the expertise and capacity to fulfill this mandate.”

In addition, auditors found that PHAC is missing sufficient skills and capacity for risk communications – specifically for communicating uncertainty – to support the Agency’s messaging around COVID-19. During H1N1, PHAC determined that a risk communications strategy could support communicating uncertainty. Key informants noted, however, that there has been little risk communications support throughout the Agency’s response to COVID-19.

“Clear and transparent communication is essential for maintaining the public’s confidence and cooperation throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” noted Davies. “The Liberal government’s failure to apply this lesson from H1N1 is absolutely unacceptable.”

The audit also found that the senior medical expertise needed to support Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, in navigating the rapidly changing science of the new virus was slow to be put in place,

AT around 8 a.m. on January 21, a Chilliwack RCMP Traffic frontline officer noted a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in the 50000-block of Hack Brown Road. Recording the speed of the vehicle on police radar at 110 kilometer per hour in a 50 kilometer speed zone, the officer immediately initiated a traffic stop.

“The driver related to our officer they were late for an appointment,” said Cpl. Mike Pfeifer.

The RCMP issued a $483 violation ticket to the vehicle operator accompanied with a sevenday vehicle impoundment.

Online estimator tool shows ICBC savings ahead ICBC has improved its online tool to provide customers an estimate of how much they will save when they renew their vehicle insurance under Enhanced Care and how much they will get in a refund from ICBC. The insurance estimator – at icbc.com/enhancedcare – will help personal customers understand what the upcoming premium savings will mean to them. When Enhanced Care comes into effect on May 1, customers who purchase basic and op-

tional insurance from ICBC will save 20% on average.

Most customers will also be eligible for a one-time, prorated refund.

THE BC Liberals said on Tuesday that B.C. drivers — who they say pay the most expensive auto insurance rates in Canada — are not fooled by the NDP’s new online estimator tool that will supposedly illustrate ICBC rate reductions, while the insurance corporation continues to reap hundreds of millions of dollars in savings as a direct result of the pandemic.

“We are seeing ICBC save millions of dollars from a much lower accident rate on the road because of the pandemic, and yet drivers haven’t seen a penny in discounts,” said MLA Mike Morris, Opposition Critic for Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Year after year, drivers have seen their rates skyrocket under the NDP, and any claim that drivers will see

“Our government is set to deliver much more affordable ICBC premiums, and now drivers can see how much they’re going to save and how much of a refund they can expect after May 1,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, on Tuesday.

New, expanded schools for Surrey students Surrey School District currently has almost 74,000 students, and it’s projecting an additional 1,000 students for the next school year THE Province says more than 1,700 students in Surrey now have better, larger places to learn, with the opening of two new schools and two expansions in the last year.

And it says much more is to come, as progress continues to be made to reduce portables in the district.

On Wednesday, January 27, Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education, met with Laurie Larsen, Chair, Surrey School Board, and Doug McCallum, Mayor of Surrey, for a Surrey Summit on Schools. They discussed ways to continue expediting school expansion projects in the district and reaffirmed their shared commitment to provide better learning spaces for students as fast as possible.

“Our government has moved quickly to get students out of portables and invest in safer, larger schools for Surrey students and staff,” Whiteside said. “I am proud of these investments, and we will continue to build on the progress we’ve made to support Surrey families, now and for generations to come.”

The meeting between the three leaders was the sixth Surrey Summit in the last four years. The discussions focused on progress and successes, acquiring more sites for future schools and new goals and commitments to work together to deliver supported projects for students, on time and on budget.

The ministry, school district and city have been working together to find new ways to accelerate the pace of school construction. They have set

Since the last Surrey Summit in January 2020, Surrey families have benefited from this collaboration through the opening of the new Edgewood and Douglas elementary schools and the expansions of Frost Road and Pacific Heights elementary schools, the result of a total investment of $72.6 million.

In addition to these expansion projects, the new Maddaugh Road Elementary school and additions at Sullivan and Coyote Creek elementary schools are expected to open in the coming months. They will add another 905 student spaces to the Surrey School District.

“The Surrey School District is the largest and fastest growing district in the province.

Our student population has been steadily increasing every year,” Larsen said. “We currently have almost 74,000 students, and we’re projecting an additional 1,000 students for the next school year.

This type of growth requires strong partnerships – with all levels of government. I am so proud of the collaborative re-

lationship we have with the Ministry of Education and the City of Surrey. Together, we are addressing the growth our community is experiencing and finding sustainable solutions that work for parents and students.”

The school expansions over the past 12 months are part of the $410 million invested in 25 Surrey school capital projects since September 2017, including seismic upgrades at six schools, 15 new or expanded schools and four land purchases for future schools.

This is helping to create nearly 8,900 new student seats in Surrey by 2023, eliminating the equivalent of nearly 360 portables. There are another six expansion projects currently supported by the Province that are expected to bring about 2,400 more new seats to the community once they are approved.

“The partnership that the City of Surrey has formed with the provincial government and Surrey School Board has been productive and is an example of how much we can accomplish when we work together towards a common goal,” McCallum said. “It is no secret that for many Surrey students, their classroom was in a portable, but that scenario is changing with the significant investments made in building new school infrastructure. I look forward to working with the Minister of Education and the Surrey School Board in continuing the positive progress we have made on this front.”

Eighty-five new childcare spaces created at Vancouverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lord Tennyson Elementary School

THE City of Vancouver on Thursday announced the opening of a childcare centre in Kitsilano that will provide 49 full-time spaces for children under four, 16 preschool spaces and 20 spaces of before and after school care for Tennyson students.

The childcare centre features an expansive outdoor play area and flexible programming space located on the third floor of the newly constructed, seismically safe Lord Tennyson Elementary School.

The childcare facility was created in partnership with the Vancouver School Board and the Province and will be operated by Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, a non-profit operator that is part of the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of British Columbia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The opening of the childcare space at Lord Tennyson Elementary School is the result of the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decade-long partnership with the Vancouver School Board. CACs are in-kind or cash contributions provided by property developers when City Council grants development rights through rezoning, and a DCL is paid by property developers based on square footage of the

CACs and DLCs play an important role in the delivery of public amenities and infrastructure, such as childcare, affordable housing, parks, cultural facilities, and community facilities, accommodating growth while ensuring the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s livability.

The City says it recognizes the importance of accessible, quality childcare for both childhood development and affordable living for Vancouver parents. The Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s partnership with the Vancouver School Board and nonprofit organizations will continue to deliver accessible care and opportunities for play, learning, and connection to Vancouver families.

These 85 new spaces are the first of approximately 275 new City facilitated childcare spaces slated to open in Vancouver in the first six months of 2021. The City says it is committed to providing more affordable childcare spaces with the goal of enabling equitable opportunities for women, which in turn leads to increased economic development.

Muzaffarnagar (UP) (IANS): Farmers from western Uttar Pradesh will now move to the Ghazipur border near Delhi to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;strengthenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the ongoing farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; agitation.

Speaking at the Maha Panchayat here on Friday, farmer leaders were unanimous in their opinion that they would take the ongoing agitation to its logical conclusion.

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) chief Naresh Tikait said that the ongoing agitation is now directly related to the honour of farmers, adding that the Centre has insulted the farmers to a great extent.

Protesting farmers on Tuesday swarmed the Red Fort in Delhi.

New Delhi (IANS): Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu and the gangsterturned-social activist Lakha Sidhana have been named by the Delhi Police in a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the unprecedented violence in the capital on Republic Day and the Red Fort incident on January 26.

The Delhi Police have registered the case at Kotwali police station of North district under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and other laws The premises of the historic monument were vandalized as the protesters went on a rampage destroying checking machines, ticket counters, furniture, and everything that came in their way.

Some of the protesters climbed the walls of the fort and even hoisted a Nishan Sahib.

Delhi Police Commissioner S.N. Shrivastava said that police have taken serious note of the Red Fort violence and everyone found

involved would be taken to task.

He also said that face recognition system would be used to identify those found involved in the violence.

The Delhi Police have also named 37 farmer leaders, including Swaraj India President Yogendra Yadav, social activist Medha Patkar and Bharatiya Kisan Unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Haryana unit President Gurnam Singh Chanduni, in the FIR filed in connection with the violence during the Republic Day tractor rally on Tuesday.

Avik Saha, Jai Kisan Aandolan and Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesperson Rakesh Tikait along with Darshan Pal Singh, Satnam Singh Pannu, Boota Singh Burjgil and Joginder Singh Ugraha have also been named in an FIR filed in Outer North Delhi.

The Delhi Police on Wednesday issued notice to farmer leader Darshan Pal asking him to explain why legal action should not be initiated against him, following the

Deep Sidhu violence during the rogue rally on Republic Day. More than 25 criminal cases have been registered, 19 people arrested and as many as 50 protesters detained so far.

PUNJABI actor Deep Sidhu, who was summoned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) last week in connection with the Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) case, was among the group of farmers who entered the Red Fort on Tuesday.

Sidhu also did a Facebook live while hoisting the Nishan Sahib from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

In the video, Sidhu said in Punjabi, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have only hoisted the Nishan Sahib flag on the Red Fort while exercising our democratic right to protest.â&#x20AC;?

Last week, the NIA had summoned Sidhu to appear before it in connection with its probe into the Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) case it had registered on December 15 last year.

Lakha Sidhana Even the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) distanced itself from Sidhu and accused him of leading the farmers to the Red Fort. The SKM said that Sidhu appeared on a stage on Monday night and gave a provocative speech promoting separatism to sabotage the farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; protest.

Known to be close to Gurdaspur MP and Bollywood actor Sunny Deol, Sidhu was the election incharge for the BJP leader during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

In December last year, Deol had distanced himself from Sidhu. Even the farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; unions had banned Sidhu last year.

ON Tuesday, protesting farmers swarmed the Red Fort in Delhi during a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;tractor rallyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; here on the Republic Day even as police tried to prevent them from driving towards central Delhi.

Farmers had insisted their parade would be “peaceful” CONTINUED FROM 33 personnel deployed at the Red Fort could be seen lathicharging the protesters even as the former were clearly outnumbered by the farmers.

A few youths climbed up the flagpole on the ramparts of the 17th century landmark and put up a Nishan Sahib.

Later, a few of them even climbed up further and fixed a farmers’ union flag near the spot where a bigger Indian flag was aflutter.

After sometime, security personnel succeeded in removing the farmers from the fort ramparts, after which they had skirmishes with the police and also chased them that led to injuries to several farmers and policemen.

Soon, the farmers left the spot and moved towards central Delhi.

All this occurred after thousands of farmers riding tractors and motorcycles thronged the busy ITO intersection and played cat-andmouse games with the police to proceed towards India Gate.

In the meantime, a young farmer died near the ITO intersection in the central Delhi due to unknown reasons. Fellow farmers sat on protest on

the spot along with the body of the deceased, who hailed from western Uttar Pradesh.

Chaos prevailed near the ITO intersection in central Delhi as hundreds of farmers rallied there to outnumber the security personnel at the spot.

Other video clips showed farmers chasing away policemen on foot as well with tractors, and trying to remove a DTC bus parked across the ITO road stretch by pushing it out of way with a tractor.

The police fired tear-gas shells and lathi-charged the protesters on different occasions as farmers remained adamant to move towards the Red Fort.

Later, Rapid Action Force and the Border Security Force was also deployed at the ITO intersection.

The farmers, after confrontation with police that lasted for around 40 minutes, moved towards Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, which houses the offices of Aam Aadmi Party, Delhi Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party.

Later, farmers opened another front in Nangloi area as they removed a trailer truck parked across the road to stop them.

the national capital and even damaged temporary police tents set up at Nangloi.

On Tuesday morning, a section of farmers stationed at Singhu and Tikri borders started their tractor parade much ahead of the scheduled time to enter the national capital in violation of an agreement with authorities. Skirmishes with police were reported from multiple fronts as farmers gathered at Karnal Bypass, Mukarba Chowk, Transport Nagar, Akshardham, Ghazipur and Tikri borders. Some farmers armed with swords were seen brandishing the weapons. Police fired tear-gas

shells on farmers after they entered Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar from the DelhiHaryana border at Singhu.

Visuals of protesters riding horses were witnessed at the Karnal Bypass while others broke through barricades at Singhu and Mukarba Chowk.

Some farmers damaged trucks and DTC buses parked on roads to stop them to enter towards central Delhi.

On Sunday, Delhi Police had allowed the tractor rally after the official Republic Day parade.

During their talks with the police, the protesters were told that they could not disrupt the celebrations on the Rajpath even as farmers insisted their parade would be “peaceful”.

ACCORDING to Delhi Police, in all, 86 policemen were injured in the violence as farmers marched inside Delhi with their tractors ahead of the scheduled time agreed upon with police authorities of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Farmers had rallied with about 6,000-7,000 tractors at Singhu border around 8:30 a.m. on January 26. As per the earlier-decided plan, they were supposed to reach Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar and then take a right turn.

However, the protesters led by ‘Nihangs’ riding horses and armed with swords and other sharp-edged weapons charged at the police and broke through several layers of barricades set up between Mukarba Chowk and Transport Nagar, Delhi Police said.

“At ITO, a large group of farmers, who had come from Gazipur and Singhu borders, attempted to move towards New Delhi district. When they were stopped by the policemen, a section of farmers became violent and broke through the barricades, damaged iron grills and road dividers and even tried to run over policemen deployed at barricades with their tractors,” a senior police officer said.

The cat-and-mouse games between the police and protesting farmers continued until late Tuesday evening.

Most of the incidents were reported from Mukarba Chowk, Gazipur, A-Point ITO, Seemapuri, Nangloi T-Point, Tikri Border and Red Fort.

Nearly 300 artistes, including children, who were part of the official Republic Day parade in Delhi on Tuesday were rescued by police after they were stranded near the Red Fort due to violence and chaos in the area.

AAP blames BJP for violence on Republic Day New Delhi (IANS): A day after the farmers taking out tractor rally created ruckus, clashed with police personnel, damaged public properties and hoisted religious flag at historic Red Fort, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which is one of those political outfits that stood in support of farmers since the beginning of protest condemned the incident.

Chadha said, “Yesterday, we all witnessed what happened in Delhi and most importantly at the Red Fort. We have condemned the violence and believe that such a thing should not have happened.”

Holding the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responsible for the violence and alleging that Deep Sidhu, the person who was reportedly caught hoisting a religious flag, belongs to BJP, he said, “Deep Sidhu, the mastermind

of yesterday’s violence, has a close connection with PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.”

He claimed that the AAP will prove that the Prime Minister and some central agencies were behind the whole incident as he showed a picture of Deep Sidhu with actor turned politician, Sunny Deol (BJP MP from Gurdaspur).

Chadha alleged, “This is a picture taken at

the Prime Minister’s residence which is a place where not any person can enter.”

Chadha further held BJP responsible for instigating violence to distract the attention of people from real issues of protesting farmers and to defame peaceful farmers protest against the three farms law enacted by the BJP-led Central government.

“The BJP must disclose why it is protecting Deep Sidhu,” the AAP leader said.

Republic Day violence: Special Cell probing role of foreign organisations

New Delhi (IANS): The Special Cell of the Delhi Police is now probing the role of foreign organisations and individuals in the violence that broke out in the national capital on January 26 after the tractor rally by the protesting farmers went awry on Republic Day. The role and conduct of organisations and individuals based in India as well as overseas is being probed now.

After framing charges of rioting, criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder, the Delhi Police have pressed more serious sections like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and sedition charges against the protesters found involved in the violent protests in Delhi on January 26.

“The special cell is investigating the conspiracy and

criminal design behind the unfortunate incidents of January 26. A criminal case has been registered and is

being investigated under the provisions of UAPA and sections of the IPC dealing with sedition,” the police

said in a statement.

The Delhi Police have now expanded the ambit of the probe and said that the

preliminary assessment suggests that there was a pre-conceived and wellcoordinated plan to break the agreement reached between the Delhi Police and the leaders of the farmers’ organisations.

The Delhi Police had earlier said that there were intelligence inputs that 308 Twitter handles were operating from across the border in Pakistan, trying to create disruption in the rally on January 26.

The specialised units of the Delhi Police, such as the Crime Branch and the Special Cell, are collecting evidence against the violent protesters and those named in the FIRs filed in connection with the violence in the national capital, including video and CCTV footages captured on January 26 when the farm-

ers’ tractor rally turned violent.

The police are now collecting video recordings made by the police staff on the day of the protest as well as those captured by other mobile cameras, including footages aired on different television channels.

The Delhi Police have also listed 30 vehicles, including tractors, in an FIR filed against those who violated the routes for the rally decided by the police and the farmers’ unions, saying that a manhunt has been launched to arrest their owners.

According to the police, the vehicles violated the route permission and their occupants started rioting and made murderous attacks on police personnel deployed on official duty on January 26.

Republic Day celebrations: India displays military might, diversity New Delhi (IANS): India’s military might, cultural diversity, social and economic progress were displayed during the 72nd Republic Day celebrations at the majestic Rajpath in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Representing India’s strides in indigenous defence technologies, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) contingent this year consisted of two tableaux depicting among others Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Take off from INS Vikramaditya.

It was followed by the Naval Tableau titled ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’.

All three of these awards were for his role in the arrest of Punjab’s dreaded gangsters.

His name was shortlisted from a list that Punjab had sent earlier.

He won his first gallantry award in 2011 for his role in the arrest of members of the dreaded Rajeev Raja Gang and the second in recognition for his role in the arrest of the dread gangster Vicky Gounder in 2018.

Gounder was shot dead by a Punjab Police team two years after the infamous Nabha jailbreak.

He won the Union Home Minister’s medal, an award instituted last year, for his role in bringing down a dreaded gangster named Ankit Bhadu on February 7, 2019, at Zirakpur. The gangster faced several criminal charges in Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan and Haryana. A man and his two minor daughters that the gangster had abducted were also rescued.

He has narrowly escaped three murder attempts in the course of his service.

Now a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Mohali, Brar, a national-level boxer, first joined Punjab Police as an ASI in 2003, and has been instrumental in the arrest of several gangsters, including ex-cop and international wrestler Jagdish Bhola, who was sentenced to 24 years in prison in 2019 for his role in a multi-crore drug racket.

Brar’s father Baldev Singh Brar was the Superintendent of Police (Detective) in Patiala when he was shot dead while taking a morning walk in 1988.

“I am honoured to get this award and I do not have words to thank my seniors and colleagues in my team who have always been my strength,” Brar said. “The price you pay for doing your job is sometimes high, but then being a cop was never an easy task.”

The comments came after the Uttar Pradesh government has ordered the district administrations to get all the farmers protest site on the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s borders with Delhi vacated, officials said on Thursday.

The orders came two days after violence during the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Kisan Gantantra paradeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on the occasion of the Republic Day at several locations in the national capital.

At the Singhu border, the protesters camping at the site have been cornered to a designated area near the central stage, while the key routes connecting Delhi and Haryana around the border were blocked on Thursday.

The panic in both AAP and BJP camps, whose leaders in Punjab are desperately grasping at straws in a bid to divert attention for their own ignominious role in the violence, is a clear sign of the conspiracy between the two parties, the Punjab Congress chief said.

NIA takes over Punjab Shaurya Chakra awardee murder probe New Delhi (IANS): Over three and half months after the murder of Shaurya Chakra awardee Balwinder Singh Sandhu in Punjab, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe from the Punjab Police as the killing was linked to a conspiracy hatched by Pakistan-based Khalistani terrorist Lakhvir Singh Rode and his ISI handlers.

An NIA spokesperson said that the antiterror probe agency has registered a case

on Tuesday into the killing of Sandhu, who was shot dead by two unidentified men in the early hours of October 16 last year at the residence-cum-school run by him in Punjabâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tarn Taran. After committing the murder, the assailants had immediately escaped on a motorcycle.

The Punjab Police had registered the case on the statement of Jagdish Kaur, wife of Sandhu.

vestigation by Punjab Police, it was revealed that the killing was executed under a conspiracy hatched by Rode and his handlers in ISI.â&#x20AC;?

2021 Honda Ridgeline Arriving: Ready to Rumble!

An iridium spark plug, along with precise metering of fuel from

the PGM-FI injection system, further enhances combustion efficiency. A total of 5 kg has been saved overall from the CRF300L’s chassis, with wet weight of 139 kg. Ground clearance has been increased, from 255 to 285 mm The front brake uses a single 256 mm disc gripped by a two-piston caliper, the rear is a 220 mm disc and single-piston caliper. 2-channel ABS is now an available option for the CRF300L, featuring the ability to turn off ABS to the rear wheel for more dynamic off-road riding. To foster easy, light control, the riding position has been subtly altered: the handlebars have been pulled back slightly, while the foot rests have been lowered and also moved back; to make gear changes in heavy offroad boots easier. Depleted soil at the root of poor health WE recently wrote about the gut microbiome – the remarkable digestive ecosystem that influences how nutrients and bacteria contribute to weight management, organ function, and even our mental health. But did you know there is a soil microbiome, and that this too affects your health? It turns out, we’ve not taken good care of it.

Perhaps you already worry about the air you breathe and the water you drink. You are, at least, choosing healthy foods that deliver the nutrition you need. You don’t buy processed products, don’t drink soda, and limit salt intake. Maybe you are even vegan, feeling good about both your health and your carbon footprint. But you may need to consult with a farmer, not a doctor, to learn about the risks facing your vegetables.

At its best, good soil is home to worms, beetles, bugs, and untold numbers of microscopic organisms that serve important functions. In life and death, they furnish the soil with nutrients. Their busy work helps the soil absorb and retain water. Some of them help control harmful pests.

But farming practices have been unkind to these critters. Relentless tilling of fields and applications of fertilizers have lessened the quality of topsoil across North America. It is dry, unable to hold nutrients or water. It blows away. And the water run-off, polluted with nitrate, a common fertilizer, is a major concern.

Regulatory limits determine acceptable levels of nitrate in public drinking water supplies. But the degradation of groundwater from overapplication of nitrogen fertilizers is a major concern to researchers studying human health. A report in the International Journal of Environmental Re-

search and Public Health warns of a relationship between nitrate ingestion and colorectal cancer, thyroid disease, and neural tube defects, including at water nitrate levels below regulatory limits.

The United Nations considers soil degradation one of the central threats to human health in the coming decades.

For now, studies show that farmed vegetables still provide all the necessary nutrients for good health. Your practice should be a diet containing the recommended number of servings per day of vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

But there’s also something to be said for turning to natural supplements when you don’t regularly achieve the daily 2.5 to 3 cups of vegetables and 1.5 to 2 cups of fruit. Further, there are notable health benefits to natural supplements.

Take Healing Earth, for example, which offers relief for joint pain associated with osteoarthritis.

These vegetable capsules contain humic acid, found in healthy soil as a result of microbial decomposition of plant matter, and MSM, another organic compound that contains sulfur. Sulfur is sometimes called “the forgotten nutrient”, although it is essential for a healthy liver, connective tissues and even stress response.

The earliest descriptions of medical uses for humic acid are found in Sanskrit, Roman, and Chinese texts. Its chemical nature was determined in the early 1800s. More recently, the World Journal of Gastroenterology published a study that tested the effects of humic acids on microbial communities of the colon. The results showed a 20-30% increase in concentrations of these healthy colonic inhabitants, suggesting an alternative to fecal transplants or probiotics for restore weakened health gut.

A report in the journal Nutrients notes MSM “may have clinical applications for arthritis and other inflammatory disorders such as interstitial cystitis, allergic rhinitis, and acute exercise-induced inflammation.”

It’s depressing what’s happening to our natural environment. But there is, at least, some hope that scientists are getting better at explaining the health benefits of mystically revered organic substances like humic acid and MSM, and that convenient and safe products are available on store shelves.
