A record number of 25 South Asian MPs were elected in October: Ontario (16), B.C. (5), Alberta (3) and Quebec (1) as a Liberal surge knocked out the Conservative Party

Most of them were of Indian origin (mostly Punjabi), but they were also of Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi origin.

taking the leading role in promoting field hockey especially among the youths.

Unsubstantiated rumours are bound to be hurled around for various reasons – and although I have heard some, I won't dignify them by repeating them here.

Instead, I will let the cops do their job and IHIT has a pretty good record of getting their man. I am sure they have some leads by now. But the

challenge is to get evidence that can stand the brutal scrutiny in court and can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. So things could take long – people have been nailed even after many years after the crime. But the important thing is not to let the killer or killers get away with it.

If the killer or killers are not caught, it will send a VERY WRONG message to those

goons who go around intimidating people in the community at the behest of rich, powerful people who want to keep a clean image themselves. Sometimes those sent to kill others are killed themselves by the very people who hired them so that they don't rat out anyone – that is what is believed to have happened in the murder of Punjabi journalist Tara Singh Hayer.

Will Jimi Sandhu be deported to India?

IN February 2014, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team announced that a second-degree murder charge had been laid against Jimi Sandhu, then 24, in the death of Red Scorpions’ gang leader Matthew Campbell, 31, of Abbotsford.

Both Sandhu and Campbell were known to police.

Campbell showed up with a severe injury to his neck at a business in the 30100block of Automall Drive on January 2, 2014, and police were called in.

Campbell succumbed to his injuries a short time after arriving at hospital.

But in January 2015, the murder charge was stayed apparently because there was no substantial likelihood of conviction.

However, that charge could be reinstated.

Then in March 2015, the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) issued what they called “an important public safety

harm” to the safety of the community and anyone who associated with them and released their photos. Police said the three were involved in an ongoing conflict and a criminal lifestyle that included violence, drugs, and weapons.

Sandhu had two criminal convictions for assault with weapon and possession of an unauthorized prohibited or restricted weapon. He was prohibited from possessing firearms.

Anju also provided pro bono advice to people in need and has volunteered at the Old Brewery Mission, a homeless shelter in Montréal. In addition, Anju has been actively involved for years in the Sikh community, mentoring youth.

Kamal Khera Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health A registered nurse, community volunteer and political activist, Kamal Khera is passionate about improving the lives of those around her. A first-generation Canadian, Kamal immigrated to Canada from Delhi, India, at a very young age. She attended York University where she earned her Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology and her Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Drawn to assisting others, Kamal gained diverse experience in the health field through her professional experience with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Peel Family Shelter, and William Osler Health Centre. Recently Kamal worked as a Registered Nurse in the Oncology Unit at St Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto, which gave her a deep understanding of the issues that impact individuals every day.

Kamal is an active member of her community, having served as Chairperson of the South Asian Canadians Heritage Foundation, Mentor and Program Coordinator at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel, and Event Coordinator with Sick Kids Foundation. She also hosted Youth Vision—a local television talk show which explored issues surrounding young South Asian Canadians.

Arif Virani Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Arif Virani, a former Ugandan Asian refugee, has spent the past 14 years as a constitutional litigator, advocating for human rights and access to justice. He has worked as an analyst with the Canadian Human Rights Commission in Ottawa, an investigator at la Commission des droits de la personne et droits de la jeunesse in Montréal, and as an assistant trial attorney prosecuting

genocide at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Virani was one of the founders of Toronto’s legal aid clinic SALCO, the recipient of the 2001 Harold G. Fox litigation scholarship at the Middle Temple, London, United Kingdom, and the 2008 Wilson-Prichard Award recipient in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession and his community.

He lives and volunteers in ParkdaleHigh Park. He is a member of the Redwood Shelter for abused women, regularly helps at the Parkdale Food Bank, is an active volunteer with Roncyworks, and has led community efforts to address mental health stigma.

Virani has an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from McGill University, and completed his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Toronto, where he graduated as valedictorian.

Arif speaks English, French, and Hindi.

Amritpal Dhillon and Amritpaul Rakhra guilty of manslaughter in slaying of Akalirai THE B.C. Supreme Court jury in the January 23, 2013 slaying case of Manraj Akalirai, 19, has found Amritpal Dhillon and Amritpaul Rakhra guilty of manslaughter.

Dhillon, who was 20 years old at the time, was charged with seconddegree murder, while Rakhra, then 18, was charged with manslaughter. But the jury did not find Dhillon guilty of second-degree murder.

Both the accused had pleaded not guilty.

THE jury heard that Akalirai had driven to the house of his friend, Witness X (whose name is under a publication ban),

Manraj Akalirai in the 6300-block of Elgin Street in east Vancouver.

Witness X told the jury that several weeks before the murder he had broken the windows of Dhillon’s vehi-

cle and Dhillon had slashed his van’s tires.

Witness X also had a complaint with Rakhra. On the night of January 23, 2013, Witness X took a ski mask, a machete and a sword along with him after Akalirai told him about some people’s presence in the block. As he and Akalirai drove off to have a meal, they found themselves blocked by two vehicles. He got out of the vehicle with a sword when he saw a man from one of the other vehicles get out with a golf club. The two then swung their weapons at each other.

Witness X testified that he dropped the sword when the other man hit his hand

with the golf club. He and Akalirai then ran from the scene. He told the jury that he saw Dhillon pick up the sword and chase him along with Rakhra.

He turned back to witness Rakhra hit Akalirai’s head in the back with the golf club. He said he saw Dhillon with the sword which struck Akalirai in the back of the head. He said he heard Dhillon say in Punjabi that he thought he had killed him.

The Province reported that under cross-examination by Dhillon’s lawyer, Witness X admitted he had told police lies in his first interview. He also admitted that he had beaten up people at a John Oliver

Secondary School party and had broken the windows of two vehicles in two different incidents that preceded the before the deadly attack.

But Dhillon’s lawyer asked the jury to acquit her client of murder because he acted in self-defence.

Dhillon told the jury that Witness X still possessed the sword after he and a man with a golf club swung their weapons at each other. Dhillon said that when he and Witness X came face to face, he used the scabbard from the sword that Witness X had taken off earlier to defend himself. Witness X dropped the sword when it hit the scabbard and ran.

Dhillon said that as he chased Witness X, Akalirai followed him with a knife.

He told the jury that he feared for his life. He said the sword was by his side when Akalirai lunged at him with the knife.

He told the jury that he hit Akalirai over the side of his head with the sword. As Akalirai was falling, Rakhra suddenly arrived and hit Akalirai with the golf club.

Dhillon said that he was in such shock that he didn’t know what had just taken place. He said he ran away from the scene because he feared that Witness X might come back with another weapon. He said he didn’t call the police because he was in shock.

IHIT yet to establish motive behind Surinderpal Hehar’s murder, appeal for witnesses THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) on Friday said that they continue to seek witnesses to the shooting of 47year-old Surinderpal (Surinder) Hehar in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 21.

Police said: “Mr. Hehar was a family man with young children, an active

volunteer in his community, and well known by many.”

IHIT investigators are asking those people who were driving or walking near 152nd Street and 66A Avenue after midnight on November 21 to contact them.

IHIT said that it is the people who were moving

about in the area who may have information that could move this investigation forward. They may not realize what they saw or heard was important for example; seeing a person who didn’t fit in, or a suspicious vehicle. IHIT are also looking for anyone who saw a dark coloured compact sedan

moving about the neighbourhood to contact them.

“While a motive for this murder has not been established the circumstances indicate this was a targeted shooting, that Mr. Hehar was the intended victim,” said Sgt. Stephanie Ashton.

Why was Hehar killed and who are the people behind the murder?

CONTINUED FROM 1 Just after Hehar’s murder, IHIT Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said: “This investigation is in the early stages. Investigators believe this to be a targeted shooting however at this point

there is no indication this shooting has any connection to any other investigation within the Surrey area. … IHIT investigators, Surrey RCMP and other Lower Mainland investigative units are working to determine the circum-

stances that led up to this incident.”

There are many, many people in the community who REALLY want to know why Hehar was killed and who the people behind his murder are.

Until then there will be an underlying feeling of insecurity in the community.

Harjit Sajjan in a message said that Bhullar was the pillar on which he and so many others stood. He added: “Now we are duty bound by his example. It is up to us to do right by his tremendous life.”

Bhullar’s wife Namrita thanked everyone and said: “Not everyone dies a hero, Meetha not only died as one, he lived as one.”

Abbotsford schools locked down as police arrest four 17-year-old males

ON Thursday, December 3 at 12:15 p.m., the Abbotsford Police received a 911 call reporting a disturbance in front of a residence in the 34000-block of Immel Street. A male resident at that location indicated that four suspects had arrived on the property and were attempting to engage him in an altercation. It was believed that one of the suspects might have possessed a weapon or firearm. The suspects left the area in the direction of Robert Bateman Secondary School.

The Abbotsford Police Department dispatched numerous resources into the area.

Working closely with the school district and school administrators, a decision was quickly made to lock down area schools until the potential threat had been identified and the suspects had been located.

The largest deployment of officers was at Robert Bateman Secondary School where witnesses observed the four suspects enter. All four were identified as 17-year-old males.

Abbotsford Police officers searched the school and ultimately located the suspects who were taken into custody without further incident. Lock downs at other area schools were subse-

quently lifted. Robert Bateman Secondary remained in lockdown until 3:20 p.m. to allow police to search for a possible weapon and additional evidence.

Constable Ian MacDonald said that police are continuing this investigation. The charges being considered at this point are for weapons and threats relating to the events that occurred off school property. Police thanked the students, parents and staff of the affected schools who they said showed tremendous patience throughout this incident.

He praised Bhullar’s generosity and optimism and his “shining belief in the ability of young people to change the world.”

Prentice added: “In a world where there is much darkness, he showed us all, seemingly effortlessly and always with that broad smile, that it is always the best in humanity that wins out.”

Sajjan on Monday wrapped up his visit to Kuwait where he met with Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel currently deployed in the region as part of Canada’s contribution to the multinational Coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Sajjan used the occasion to pay tribute to the troops, thanking them for their dedication and service.

While in Kuwait, Sajjan also met with his counterpart, Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah AlSabah, and other senior officials. During their discussions, Sajjan underscored Canada’s ongoing commitment to working with allies and partners to counter global terrorism, and expressed his appreciation to Kuwait for hosting Canadian Armed Forces personnel engaged in the campaign. This support is vital to the mission.

Sajjan said: “Over the past few days, I have had the pleasure of meeting with allies and partners in both Jordan and Kuwait to discuss cooperation on a number of pressing global security and humanitarian issues. I was pleased with the positive exchange of ideas and expressed Canada’s on-going commitment to working with coalition partners to counter the ISIS threat, as well as Canada’s efforts to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees from the region as quickly as possible.”

He added: “It is an honour and privilege to represent Canada on the world stage and to have an opportunity to meet with coalition counterparts and members of the Canadian Armed Forces. I want to express my deep appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen and airwomen for their hard work, professionalism and dedication.”

Abbotsford’s Canadian Community College will provide Syrian refugees free training IN a generous move, the management of the Canadian Community College, situated at 200 – 2451 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, have decided to provide Syrian refugees free training in short-term job-oriented programs, such as basic security training, so that the prospective students become employable.

The students must be referred to the college by Abbotsford Community Services or

by Mission Community Services, or by any other government-approved body, and they must meet the institution’s minimum admission requirements, such as a reasonable level of English.

Dr Hardyal Singh Aulakh, President and Principal of the College, told the media that the Syrian refugees will be warmly welcomed for admission to the training programs without any discrimination and that at least half the seats in each training program will be reserved for the refugees for a period of at least one year once they start arriving in Abbotsford.

“This endeavour is aimed at ensuring that the refugees are able to rehabilitate themselves with ease and a sense of dignity in this great country – their new home,” he added.

Furthermore, community-based organizations such as: MOSAIC, the Surrey Interfaith Society, Options Community Services, and the Kwantlen Student Association came to show their appreciation and for the Sikh community.

“This meeting gave life to the government’s plan as the stakeholders were able to commit to specific contributions,” said Sarai. The gurdwaras have also been receiving donations that include blankets, food and clothing, from their congregations.

Additionally, Dr. Gulzar Cheema and Dr. Pargat Bhurji offered to put together a team of volunteer medical professionals that will attend to the refugees’ medical needs.

Medisave Pharmacy pledged that they would provide basic medications to the refugees free of charge.

Compared to the last meeting, there was also an increase in corporate contributions. Tony Singh of Fruiticana stores in Surrey promised to provide free groceries to the refugee families. Other local businesses emphasized their ability to employ the refugees as truck drivers, mechanics, lab techs, call center callers, plumbers and electricians. This would help the refugees on an ongoing basis, and not only when they arrive.

Representatives of the Sikh Student Association from UBC and SFU stated that they are contemplating on creating a mentorship program for the refugee families. This program would assist in coaching the new families on how to use public transit and locating the nearest groceries stores, while connecting them with the government-funded social services.

MEANWHILE, Musa Ismail of the B.C. Muslim Association said he was inspired by the support that the Sikh community has shown and wanted the Muslim community to take a leading role in this great cause as well.

Representatives from the British Columbia Muslim Association School and Iqra Muslim School were among those who met with Sarai. They are proposing a special government-funded program for the children of the refugee families to the Education Minister and the Surrey School Board. They will get in touch with Khalsa School to ensure that there is consistency in resources and services being offered to the children. The proposal also includes assisting the government in assessing the children’s literacy levels when placing them in a class.

The Muslim community coalition indicated that they were working with many Muslim and humanitarian organizations to sponsor and provide support to the refugees in Canada. A fundraising dinner has been organized on Sunday, December 6 at India Banquet Hall and all proceeds will go to the Syrian refugee campaign.

The Muslim community will set up an Arabic hotline for the refugees. This would also connect them to culturally sensitive social servic-

es such as women’s centres.

Mercy Mission Society of British Columbia and the Muslim Food Bank were also present at the meeting

and considered in contributing to the cause on an ongoing basis.

Province takes next step to ready for Syrian refugees THE Province announced on Wednesday that it is taking a number of steps to prepare for the arrival, resettlement and integration of refugees in B.C. Supported by $500,000 through the $1 million Refugee Readiness Fund, the government will fund five Refugee Response Teams to

proactively plan for the settlement of refugees in their communities. The teams will have representatives from the refugee service provider community: settlement organizations, private sponsors, churches, educators, health care providers and employers. Teams are anticipated in the Lower Mainland, Fraser

Valley, Vancouver Island, Okanagan and Cariboo, however locations are contingent on where refugees ultimately settle.

tlement workers, counsellors, and other service providers throughout the province to the information they need to support refugees. * Track volunteer offers, inkind donations and housing and employment leads. * Set up a range of supports for clinicians caring for traumatized refugees, including a new telephone consultation line and a trauma needs assessment tool. * Provide workshops and support to the Refugee Response Teams. * ISSofBC is currently the only service provider in B.C. that provides the full suite of federally-funded Resettlement Assistance Program services to government-assisted refugees. They can ensure provincially-funded services are aligned with federal services.

The Province has also identified further initiatives to sup-

port successful settlement of refugees in B.C. Through the Canada-BC Job Grant, up to $1.5 million will support skills training to assist refugees and new Canadians to gain employment, in partnership with sector/industry associations and employers.

The first stream of $1.0 million will focus specifically on refugees while the second $500,000 stream will be open to refugees, protected persons entitled to work in Canada, and new immigrants (arrived within the last five years). Funding is focused on three key areas: * Job readiness training, including specialized language supports and cultural training to prepare for working in British Columbia; * Job match services to link refugees with employers ready to hire new Canadians * Job specific training – up to $10,000 per person for job

specific skills training that is cost shared between federal and provincial governments (cover two-thirds of the costs) and employers (cover the remaining one-third the costs).

The Province will also invest $2.6 million in project based language training throughout B.C. that will support refugees and other immigrants. $1.27 million will be provided to community organizations, professional associations and post-secondary institutions across the Lower Mainland to provide training for recent immigrants to help them overcome language barriers faced when seeking employment. Further details as well as specific locations will continue to be outlined within the coming weeks.

When they would ask, “Who are you and where are these toys from?” Victor would simply reply, “It doesn’t matter who I am or where I am from, these toys are for the kids and that’s all you need to know.” It was later found that Victor had made trips to the hospital for over a dozen years. Victor was just being Victor, he didn’t tell anyone what he was up to.

This is the 9th annual Victor Ghirra Toy Drive and in the last eight years, over 22,150 toys have been collected in memory of the man with the golden heart.

“Sitting amongst the hundreds of mourners at Victor’s funeral in October there was one thing that was clear: his giving spirit must live on. Speech after speech, in one of the most emotional funerals anyone has been to, all resonated the same feelings; it was not fair that Victor left this world at the tender age of 37,” says Harvey Kooner, co-founder of BBS. Victor’s brother Bobby Ghirra says: “My younger brother Victor - you cannot imagine looking at Victor, without looking at that smile, the smile that could make a slow morning brighter or a stressful day peaceful because it renewed my sense of hope. The meaning of the smile will never lose its power.

It will forever warm my heart in the coldest of times.”

The toy drive kicked off with a very generous donation of $1,000 from the Richmond Sunrise Rotary Club. Premier Christy Clark rejects Senate appointment process, Conservatives say it isn’t democratic or transparent PREMIER Christy Clark on Thursday rejected the Senate appointment process announced by the federal Liberal government.

Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef said a five-member advisory board - three from the federal level and two ad-hoc members from the provinces - will select independent candidates who have a record of achievement and public service, show integrity, are non-partisan and understand the role of the Senate.

Clark said in a statement: “B.C. will not participate in the process outlined today to appoint senators.

“Today's changes do not address what’s been wrong with the Senate since the beginning. It has never been designed to represent British Columbians or our interests at the national level.

“Our position has not changed: the Senate should be fixed or folded but we should not be distracted by it.

“Our priority remains a strong economy and job creation. We will continue to work with the federal government in the many areas where we can strengthen our province and our country, together.”

The federal government also announced that five senators will be chosen right away by a transition advisory board to have a better regional balance. Two will be selected from Ontario, two from Manitoba and one from Quebec.

PRIME Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Senator George Furey is the new Speaker of the Senate .

He said in a statement: “Senator Furey brings a wealth of experience to the Upper Chamber that will help to restore this proud Canadian institution, allowing it to focus more effectively on the priorities Canadians are facing today.

“Canadians must have confidence that their democratic institutions will respond to their needs. I believe that Senator Furey will promote respectful, productive deliberations among Senators and ensure strong accountability to Canadians.

“Senator Furey will also preside over the Senate as it undergoes an important change to become a more independent, less partisan chamber. As announced today, we are standing by our commitment and creating a new, non-partisan, merit-based process that will advise me on Senate appointments. Today we begin restoring the trust of Canadians in this public institution.

“I congratulate Senator Furey on this appointment and look forward to working with him and all Senators to build a more open and accountable government and an even stronger Canada.”

OFFICIAL Opposition Critic for Democratic Institutions Scott Reid (Conservative) slammed the Liberals’ Senate appointment process as not being democratic or transparent.

He said: “It isn’t real senate reform. It simply creates an unelected, appointed body to recommend unelected, appointed Senators.

Let’s be clear: this is the status quo, with Prime Minister Trudeau making appointments to the Senate. There is only one party that has stood up for real Senate reform and an elected Senate, and that is the Conservative Party of Canada.

“This announcement is a step backwards for democracy. The one and only democratic element of our current system is that Senators from Alberta are nominated by means of a province-wide election under the Senatorial Selection Act. Yet the Liberals seem intent on ruling out this possibility in Alberta and elsewhere, returning to appointments as [then-Liberal prime minister] Paul Martin did in 2004 when he ignored the Senatorial Selection Act and appointed three Alberta Senators with no popular mandate.

“The process adds another level of secrecy to an already opaque process. The shortlist this panel will generate is secret by design. The

public won’t even learn who has been nominated by the panel, other than the candidate selected by the Prime Minister.

“The structure of the five-member panel guts the critical regional representation function of the Senate. In most cases, the prime minister and most of the panel members won’t represent the

province for which an appointment is being made. Already, the British Columbia government has made clear it will not take part in this process because it does nothing to address that province’s actual concerns.

“One of the first five new senators nominated through this will be appointed the new Government Leader in the Senate, a specifically partisan role tied to the government of the day.

This simply adds to concerns that the appointment process is rigged from the start to provide the Prime Minister with a crop of nominal ‘independents’ who will reliably support only the government’s agenda.

“If the Liberals won’t listen to Canadians – who overwhelmingly prefer different solutions – and won’t take steps to make the Senate more democratic, they must provide greater transparency for this ad hoc process they’ve created.

“It’s unfortunate the Liberal Government lacks the commitment to bring real change to the Senate.

Today’s announcement is a distraction from what the real focus of the government should be, and

that is job creation and a strong economy.”

Rattan Mall adds: With so many Liberals desperately trying to get Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to appoint them to the Senate as some kind of a reward for their real or imagined services to the party, many Trudeau haters are just waiting for an opportunity to pounce on him and discredit his appointees if he ends up selecting some supporters with a controversial or shady background.

As it is Trudeau is getting a lot of flak for his “hypocrisy” in having not one but two nannies for his kids at the taxpayers’ expense after having pontificated about how wealthy families like his should not get Universal Childcare Benefits.

The Conservatives control 49 of 105 seats and are currently in a position to block government bills.

Everyone is watching how Trudeau handles the Senate issue and if it’s not done right, he will for sure end up disappointing many of his supporters.

He shouldn’t take them for granted.

Calgary Police looking for Gaiven Mahal and Davinder Sanghera CALGARY Police are seeking public assistance in locating two men, one of

whom is wanted on warrants in connection with a recent incident in Castleridge.

At approximately 5:45 a.m., on Thursday, November 26, an officer was dispatched to a disturbance call in the 0-100 block of Castleridge Crescent N.E. The initial call for help came from someone inside the home who said two men were at the address threatening to shoot one of the residents. The two men left the home before police arrived, however, warrants have now been issued for one of the men.

Gaiven Singh Mahal, 18, is being sought for uttering threats in connection with the incident. He is South Asian, 5’9” tall, 180 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Police are also seeking Davinder Singh Sanghera, 28. He is wanted on unrelated warrants for breaching his current release conditions and theft. Sanghera is a person of interest in the Castleridge incident.

He is South Asian, 5’11” tall, 170 pounds, with brown hair and black eyes. He has a tattoo on his upper right arm of a lion’s face.

Calgary Police said that shortly after the incident in Castleridge, one of their members was involved in an officerinvolved shooting a short distance away on Fallingworth Court N.E. They have not made a connection between the two men.

The shooting is still under investigation and no injured person has been identified.

Deepa Mehta wins Technicolor Clyde Gilmour Award from Toronto Film Critics Association THE Toronto Film Critics Association has announced that filmmaker Deepa Mehta is the recipient of this year’s Technicolor Clyde Gilmour Award.

The TFCA thanked Technicolor Creative Services for enabling the Technicolor Clyde Gilmour Award recipient to give $50,000 in services to a filmmaker of

their choosing.

“Being chosen by the Toronto Film Critics for the Technicolor Clyde Gilmour Award is gratifying, unexpected, and genuinely touching. It’s a great feeling,” said Mehta, who released Beeba Boys earlier this year.

Residents battle mega truck stop in South Surrey, community meeting on Sunday RESIDENTS in South Surrey and surrounding communities are joining forces to help stop the City of Surrey from building a massive 77-acre commercial truck parking facility in an ecologically sensitive area.

“We think it’s irresponsible to take agricultural land, which drains into an important salmon and trout spawning river, and turn it into a commercial truck parking facility,” says Brian Coote of Friends of Hazelmere Campbell Valley, the group organizing Sunday’s community meeting.

“Parking hundreds of trucks on this land would cause pollutants and chemicals to drain into the Little Campbell River, one of the most productive steelhead rivers in the Lower Mainland. The damage would be irreparable.”

GG Metro Holdings has put forward an application to the City of Surrey to build a truck parking facility, including truck washing, maintenance facilities and warehousing on 16th Avenue and

192nd Street, at the SurreyLangley border.

Residents in the area have formed the group Friends of Hazelmere Campbell Valley to help stop the proposal and work with the City to find a suitable location. They have a number of concerns, including: * Risks to Human Health: The drinking water of thousands of Surrey and Langley residents is at risk because this facility would sit above the Brookswood Aquifer, a main source of drinking water. * Holding the City accountable to its own Sustainability Charter and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy: All West Coast species of salmon, as well as mature trees, and numerous threatened or endangered species reside on the 77-acre proposed development site, which is part of the most productive watershed in the Lower Mainland. * Truck Parking Needs: This proposal does not address the needs of Surrey-based truckers who are

crying out for legal and affordable truck parking. Truck parking at this site appears to be a lossleader for another industry that does not cater to local, independent Surrey truckers.

Canada needs a national dementia strategy

BY GARY THANDI IT started so benignly. My wife was watching something on television that made her laugh – and I remember thinking I've never heard her laugh that way. It may not seem like much (and at the time I didn't think twice about it) but it was a laugh I had never heard from her in the ten years we had been together. In the months that followed, there were more signs of something being off. Cyndi had always been on top of our kids' various appointments and after-school activities. She was always the structured, organized one, and I was the one who just kind of went with the flow of things … so when piano lessons and martial arts classes started being missed, it was very unusual.

I chalked it up to her just being very busy. After all, it was around spring / early summer – some of the busiest times for a school teacher as end of the year school activities were in full swing and student reports were due.

There were other signs, and again I didn't think much of them at the time. For example, she was always a little inquisitive, so I didn't find it too

odd when she started asking people questions that – while not offensive – were usually things people didn't ask, especially when you just meet them – like what someone's income was or when they were going to get married or have children. Sometimes she would rattle off question after question so it felt like an inquisition rather than a conversation. I would just tell her to stop it whenever she did that, and again didn't think too much of it.

Come September and there were some issues at her school. It was then I realized something was wrong – she loved to teach and would never deliberately do anything that could ever result in concerns by her school. She went off on leave while I tried to figure out what was going on with her. As different as her behaviours were to those who knew her, at no time could she recognize there was anything wrong. It took nearly nine months to diagnose her (and frankly if it wasn't for having some connections to medical professionals, and knowing that I needed to fully advocate for my wife, I figure it would have taken at least twice as long).

My wife was diagnosed with dementia nearly

three years ago. She was just 36 years old. The disease, frontotemporal dementia (FTD), robbed her – and her loved ones – of the qualities that made her who she was – a wonderful wife, daughter, mother and teacher (the kind of teacher that kindergartners and their parents absolutely adored, as she was kind, nurturing and eternally cheerful). The deterioration was rapid; within three years (she just celebrated her 39th birthday this past October) the illness has rendered her unable to function on her own. She is currently a resident of a care facility.

My sons, ages 11 and 7, have lost their mother, my parents and in-laws have lost a daughter (my parents saw her as one of their own) and I have lost my best friend and soul mate – the person I planned on growing old with. I am grateful for the support of family and friends – as well as grateful for the kindness and professionalism of those working in the health care field who have connected with my wife and my family over the past three years. However, even with such supports there were times I was lost, sad, angry, exhausted and confused. as we came to grips with this terrible diagnosis and its symptoms. The reality is still something I have trouble coming to grips with. There are few answers in her case as to why she was afflicted – and at a such young age –but maybe with future advancements in research I will have an answer.

As for research, Canada needs a national dementia strategy. The Alzheimer Society of Canada website notes: "According to a recent Nanos survey, 83% of Canadians reported they believe Canada needs a national dementia plan.

We need a comprehensive, workable national dementia strategy that dramatically improves the lives of people living with dementia." It was an idea that had all-party support prior to the last federal election, but it has yet to happen.

Dementia is a disease that is expected to grow, as our population ages. I look forward to Canada implementing a national dementia strategy and investing in research and other resources that can be of benefit to those living with dementia and their loved ones.

Suspect in Vancouver’s Emily Carr University stabbing in custody VANCOUVER Police announced on Thursday morning that a suspect is in custody following Wednesday evening’s stabbing at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design at 1399 Johnston Street.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police found a student inside the school who had been stabbed in the face. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The suspect fled prior to police arrival.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday, the 24-yearold Vancouver man believed to be responsible for the stabbing turned himself in to police. He remains in custody and is facing a charge of assault and weapons-related offences.

The suspect and victim are known to each other and the stabbing appears to be the result of an ongoing dispute between the two men.

Unifor reaches new agreements with six container trucking companies CONTAINER truck drivers at several Metro Vancouver trucking companies voted to ratify collective agreements with Unifor on Sunday after several days of around-the-clock bargaining.

Companies with new collective agreements include AG, Aheer, Forward, Prudential, and Sunlover.

“These collective agreements are a major step forward for the sector’s drivers,” said Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor’s BC Area Director. “Unifor drivers have a

major advantage with fair rates and working conditions with this deal.”

Roughly 75% of truck drivers represented by Unifor have now ratified a collective agreement that won’t expire until July 2019—a major step towards stability at Port Metro Vancouver. The new deal ensures that all outstanding retro pay will be paid out to drivers within 30 days, improves rates for CN and CP moves, and fixes the pay chart for “off dock” moves. In addition to job security

protections and better dispatching language, companies will also start contributing toward a benefit plan for both owner-operators and company drivers.

Only two companies—Port Transport and Harbour Link— remain unwilling to bargain deals that meet the pattern. Port Transport’s workers have been on strike for a week and remain off the job.

Harbour Link has been one of the main companies that have refused to pay the retroactive

Surrey RCMP say Tuesday night’s shooting was result of a pre-arranged altercation between two groups of young people

SURREY RCMP said on Thursday that Tuesday night’s shooting incident in which a 17-year-old suffered a gunshot wound in the leg in the playground of Prince Charles Elementary School at 124th Street and 100th Avenue was a targeted incident and part of a pre-arranged altercation that involved multiple young persons from two different groups.

The shooting took place at about 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday and officers located a 17-year-old male victim and transported him to a local area hospital in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The initial investigation revealed that the victim was approached by two white males and one of them shot him. The suspects were described as white males between the ages of 17 and 22, about 5’10” tall, wearing dark clothes and cov-

But further investigation shows that this was a pre-arranged affair. Officers have received minimal cooperation from the victim and from the other young people allegedly involved. The victim remains in hospital in stable condition.

Police said the investigation is still in its early stages, however, there is nothing to indicate that this incident was related to the city’s ongoing conflicts between those involved in the drug trade.

“Our officers will be working with the school district and parents of those who we believe are involved in this altercation to try to prevent these young persons from being involved in further incidents of this kind,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Scotty Schumann. “This is also an opportunity for all parents and guardians to talk with their children about personal safety and being cautious of whom they associate with and the activities they are involved in.”

ON Tuesday (December 1) at about 11:45 a.m., New Westminster Police Department patrol officers rushed to the 2200-block of 8th Avenue upon receiving a report of bullet holes being located in both a vehicle and a house.

The Major Crime Unit assumed conduct of the investigation. No one is believed to have been injured.

“Members are in the early stages of their investigation, but do not believe there is a risk to the public at this time,” said acting Sgt. Jeff Scott on Tuesday. “It is too soon to say if this is related to gang activity or any other shootings that have recently happened around the Lower Mainland.”

Richmond RCMP investigating report of shots heard RICHMOND RCMP on Tuesday (December 2) were investigating a report of possible shots heard shortly before 1 p.m. in the area of Cambie Road and Shell Road.

Two males were reportedly sitting in an open area north east of the intersection when a dark coloured vehicle reportedly drove toward them and shots were heard. Both the males and the vehicle fled the scene in different directions.

Multiple officers combed the area along with a K9 unit from the LMD Police Dog Service and searched for any alleged victims or suspects. “We have several potential witnesses to speak to,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

Justice Minister Suzanne Anton blames Harper’s government for reducing funds for DNA testing costs FORMER prime minister Stephen Harper’s hypocrisy on being tough on crime was exposed on Wednesday by B.C.’s Justice Minister Suzanne Anton who said Harper’s government had reduced funds for the cost of DNA services.

Anton said: “I have been hearing from a number of municipalities regarding the cost of DNA services. Until recently, the federal government, through the RCMP,

provided DNA services to police at no cost. British Columbia made a yearly contribution to those costs.

“This changed when the previous federal government decided to revise the funding model, declining to pay at the same level as they had before. But let’s be clear – British Columbia has not changed its funding – this is an increase that was imposed on B.C. and other provinces by the federal government which is now

requiring municipalities and the Province to pay more for DNA services, or lose the service altogether.

“Unfortunately, this means the costs fall to both levels of government and we recognize the burden this federal decision places on municipalities.”

Anton noted that is why B.C. was making a significant financial contribution to help municipalities move to the new funding model.

She said: “Not only will we continue to subsidize municipal DNA testing by maintaining our annual contribution of $1.3 million, in order to assist municipalities, we have paid an addi-

tional $1.2 million in 2014-15 and will pay an additional $1.7 million this year for DNA services used by police in B.C. “During negotiations around this change, we engaged municipalities, briefed the president of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) and UBCM’s Local Government Contract Management Committee. My staff also briefed police chiefs and police boards.

“In fact, on February 21, 2014, UBCM director Rhona Martin and then-president and co-chair of UBCM Dianne Watts wrote to the federal government strongly

urging them to reach an agreement with the Province on a number of issues, including DNA analysis. They made the point that it was not appropriate for Public Safety Canada to make assertions about service reductions when service delivery is the responsibility of the RCMP. “While UBCM and municipalities have been aware of these changes for over a year, I do understand why they have concerns with the decision by the federal government. I would encourage them to raise these directly with the Government of Canada.”

Get-together of former HMT employees from India brings back treasured memories THE fourth annual get-together of former HMT employees from India took place on Sunday, November 22 in Surrey.

The attendees included some employees who were the pioneers of HMT (Hindustan Machine Tools Limited) when it was established. It was set up by the efforts of the then-prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru and the then-chief minister of Punjab, Partap Singh Kairon, in 1962.

Now the plant falls in the state of Haryana (as Punjab was split up) at Pinjore, just before the beautiful Pinjore Moghul Gardens on the highway from Chandigarh to Kalka / Simla.

Media Advisor Anne Drennan said: “Another woman politely asked them to stop and was attacked by both women. She was punched, knocked to the ground, kicked and grabbed by the hair. She managed to break free and left the area, calling police. The two attackers boarded a westbound train heading for Waterfront Station.

“The victim, who was naturally, very upset, suffered cuts and bruises, a black eye and injuries to one arm. She was transported to hospital for treatment.”

The suspects are described as follows: Suspect #1: Caucasian female, early 20’s, long straight brown hair, brown eyes, medium full-figured build, wearing a black minidress, short light coloured denim jacket, high heels and carrying a black and white clutch purse.

Consuming alcohol in any vehicle is illegal in B.C. whether or not it is moving IT’S holiday season again and the Government of B.C. is reminding British Columbians to celebrate safely and make good decisions when riding in limousines or any vehicle with perimeter seating during celebrations.

“We want everyone to travel safely during Christmas and New Year’s festivities and there are many options for getting around when celebrating with family and friends,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Whether it’s personal cars with designated drivers, limousines and buses, or public transit, we encourage everyone to think ahead about getting home safely at the end of the evening, and remember that it is illegal to consume alcohol in any of these transportation modes.”

In February, the Province changed the licensing regulation for perimeter seating limousines to increase safety and accountability in B.C.’s limousine industry. Since then, 79 licensees have been approved by the Passenger Transportation Board to operate 171 vehicles with the new Special Authorization licence.

Licensees have to display their passenger transportation licence plate and decal on every vehicle. This allows government and law enforcement to better enforce the industry and motivate operators to provide a service that is safe and compliant with provincial laws.

Since the enhanced licensing requirements, the passenger transportation registrar has led compliance and education activities with industry related to the advertising of alcohol in vehicles.

Advertising cannot allude to the consumption of alcohol in a company-operated vehicle – it is illegal.

To support industry’s efforts to raise awareness of liquor laws in B.C., the registrar has sent every licensed operator in B.C. a decal for display in their vehicles, reminding passengers that “consuming alcohol in any vehicle is illegal in B.C.” Almost 800 of the decals have been provided to operators free of charge. They can also use the decal on their websites, for social media and other communications.

Broad support for new government, 49% would vote Liberal today Majorities in BC, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada feel country headed in right direction

BY BRUCE ANDERSON & DAVID COLETTO Abacus Data IN our latest nationwide poll, fully 49% say that they would vote Liberal if there was an election today, signalling that the early choices made by the Trudeau government have been generally well received by voters. Conservative support today stands at 24% and the NDP level of support is 16%.

Clearly “horse race” numbers have much less importance this far outside an election period, however, they do provide benchmarks against which to compare public assessments of the incumbents and challengers on a going forward basis.

In Ontario, 54% would vote Liberal, 26% Conservative and 16% NDP In Quebec, the numbers for the Liberal Party are almost as strong: 47% say they would vote Liberal, 19% for each of the NDP and Conservatives. Remarkably, when the federal campaign began only a few months ago, the numbers were reversed: the NDP was at 47% and the Liberals at 20%.

In BC, the Liberals are at 42%, the Conservatives 29% and the NDP 16%.

Polling at 49% support means that some people who didn’t vote for the Liberals are happy enough with the early efforts of the Liberal government.

Robber arrested within minutes of robbing Abbotsford store THE 36-year-old alleged robber from Langley thought it would be a piece of cake robbing a store run by a 70-year-old man in the 32300 block of Peardonville Road in Abbotsford.

Just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the suspect pep-

per-sprayed the owner and pushed him to the ground.

He then ordered the owner to open the safe and helped himself to cash and jewellery.

The season of darkness and ice

ROAD safety issues are seasonal. In mid- to late fall, three topics always invite a re-visit and journalists who focus on driving and safety invariably dig up the latest research on them.

The first is clock optimization and its effect on road safety. The return to standard time on the first Sunday in November provides everyone with the luxury of an extra hour of sleep but at the cost of reduced visibility at the end of the day. Ongoing debate concerns the risk from reduced visibility from the night-time early darkness in standard time compared to that from sleep deprivation and high rates of vehicle usage with daylight saving time in the spring and summer months.

The latest studies from

both Britain and the US indicate that daylight savings time may, in fact, be a ‘lifesaver.’ In Britain, for example, the return to standard time means that schoolchildren are returning home in the dark. The steady trend of a noticeable spiking in child pedestrian fatalities just after 4 pm at this time of year, along with a 37 percent increase in the number of accidents involving all pedestrians in the evening over the morning has prompted SmartWitness, a British motor safety company to contend that, “stopping the clocks going back … could save hundreds of children’s lives.”

Another takeaway from this, however, is better awareness that the increasing darkness of day’s end considerably reduces driver and pedestrian reaction times. In the fall and winter, walking or driving home is proving to be the most dangerous time on the road.

The second topic is the seasonal increase in impaired driving checkpoints. As a result, ‘tis the season for reminding drivers impaired by alcohol,
