Joe Biden selects California Senator Kamala Harris as running mate JOE Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, on Tuesday selected California Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate, making history by selecting the first Black and South Asian American woman to compete on a major U.S. party’s presidential ticket.

The two will formally accept the Democratic nominations during the party’s convention held virtually next week.

Biden tweeted: “I have the great honour to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate.”

Harris tweeted: “@JoeBiden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals.

“I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”

Her sister Maya is also a lawyer.

While the African American identity became the dominant one – and, in fact, the one that boosted her chances to the get the vice presidential nomination – Harris wrote, “Our classical Indian names harked back to our heritage and we were raised with a strong awareness of and appreciation for Indian culture.”

She wrote, “My mother, grandparents, aunts and uncle instilled us

Her grandfather P V Gopalan was born in Painganadu in Tamil Nadu and joined government service under the British and his work took him and the family to Mumbai, Kolkatta, Delhi and Lusaka, Zamibia, before he retired to Chennai.

Harris writes that her grandfather had also been a “freedom-fighter.”

She recalls visiting him as a child in Luska, where he had been sent by the Indian government in the late 1960s to help that young nation deal with a refugee crisis brought on by a renegade white suprema-

cist government breaking away from Britain in neighbouring Southern Rhodesia, which became Zimbabwe.

Shyamala Gopalan moved to Canada to teach at McGill University in Montreal when Harris was about 12. Harris rounded off her international exposure going to high school in Quebec. But returned to the US to study at Howard University, an African American institution in Washington.

But she does not have appear to have close ties to her father.

When she was asked the about 1,900 convictions her office obtained for offences relating to marijuana when she was the San Fracisco prosecutor, she admitted smoking it and reportedly joked, “Half my family’s from Jamaica.

Her father rebuked her saying, according to Jamaica Global, “Myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty.”

He accused her of bringing up “the fraudulent stereotype of a potsmoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics.”

The publication said that according to some Jamaicans, “Harris tends to downplay her Jamaican heritage when it suits her, crediting her Tamil Indian mother with the most significant influence on her life and outlook and rarely talks about her father’s influence.

Her father Donald, hardly ever gets credit except when mentioned alongside her mother, but rarely as an individual.”

Tejwant Danjou found guilty in killing of Rama Guaravarapu B.C. Supreme Court Justice Allison Beames on Thursday ruled that former Surrey real estate agent Tejwant Danjou, 71, had the intent to be convicted of murder in the death of his common-law spouse Rama Gauravarapu, who was a financial planner at a Surrey Royal Bank branch, on July 22, 2018.

Beames said: “The evidence supports the conclusion that Mr. Danjou’s actions - before, during and after the offence - were purposeful and goal-directed.”Danjou, who was charged with second-degree murder, had caught everyone by surprise when he insisted in court at the start of his five-week trial last February that he was guilty. But the very next day his lawyer instructed the judge

that her client wanted to withdraw his guilty plea. The court allowed Danjou to do so.

During closing arguments last month, the Crown said Danjou was an abusive and violent man, while the defence asked for a manslaughter conviction, describing Danjou as suffering from delusions about his partner’s fidelity.

Beames said the only thing for her to decide in the trial by judge alone was whether he was guilty of manslaughter or second-degree murder, the difference being “intent.”

The judge noted the cause of Gauravarapu’s death was listed as blunt force trauma, but she had 52 areas of injury. She suffered injuries to her face, had defensive wounds

on her arms and hands, and had a 20-centimetre cut to her neck, CBC reported.

On the day of the murder, the couple spent hours at a winery, which ended in arguments and Danjou getting a

separate room at the hotel.

The judge said: “There is abundant evidence that shows Mr. Danjou acted with purpose and foresight.”

She noted that Danjou also showed intent after he fled the hotel room and travelled a considerable distance on foot before hiding in a dumpster, where he was caught, CBC reported.

Although the defence said he was intoxicated, Beames said: “I am satisfied Mr. Danjou was not intoxicated or impaired to the degree that it affected his ability to understand and foresee the consequences of his assault.”

Danjou, who was convicted of second-degree murder, will face a life sentence. A sentencing hearing has been set for September 14.

“Your actions also inspire others. Be a role model in your community and employ your layers of protection, keep gatherings small, have a designated ‘contact keeper,’ limit time with others, maintain physical distance

and always stay home if you’re feeling unwell.”

And what was highlighted by TV stations in their new broadcasts on Thursday night was the Club Mumbai event at Levels in downtown Vancouver that showed a young South Asian crowd abandoning all COVID-19 precautions brazenly. Someone had posted a video of the August 6 event on social media. (See video-snatch) Nobody was wearing masks as they crowded on the dance floor, even pouring drinks into one another’s mouths in Bollywood filmi style!

That kind of show really spoils the South Asian image and only encourages racism.

New COVID-19 cases in the 20-29 age group are outpacing other age groups

HEALTH Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on Thursday while announcing 78 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), for a total of 4,274 cases in British Columbia, warned that their modelling shows new cases in the 20-29 age group outpacing other age groups.

They added: “We know that young people have the strength, consideration and compassion to fight the pandemic. We know because we have seen you do it before. We need to support each other to step up and do it again.

“This virus has consequences for every age group. It can hurt your heart

and lungs, and leave you exhausted, even if you are a young adult. These symptoms can last weeks. That means weeks of your summer away from work and away from friends.”

New Sikh immigrant drowns in California river while trying to save 3 kids Manjeet Singh first used his turban to try to rescue kids, then rushed into the river LAST Wednesday (August 4), Manjeet Singh, 29, of Fresno was at California’s Reedley Beach having a good time with relatives and friends when he heard a woman screaming and saw three kids drifting into the swift river, according to news reports.

His brother-in-law, Malkiat Singh, told the media that first Manjeet took off his turban and tried to use it as a rescue rope. When that didn’t work, he rushed into the cold water but was pulled under. His family and friends followed and nearly drowned themselves.

But they managed to rescue two children.

However, eight-year-old Samantha was swept away by the current. She remains on life support at a children’s hospital.

Manjeet was found downstream after emergency personnel searched for an hour, He had come from India just two months ago and had taken his first truck driving class.

Manjeet Singh’s family said that in less than 24 hours, a GoFundMe account raised more than $15,000. By Saturday (July 8) $83,969 had been raised. The money will be used to send his body back to India and help his parents.

On Thursday (August 13), had surpassed its new goal of $200,000.

Obama endorses Indian-American candidate Sara Gideon in U.S. Senate race Washington (IANS): Sara Gideon, an Indian-origin Democratic senatorial candidate in the state of Maine, has won the endorsement of former US President Barack Obama for her November contest against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, the media reported.

Daughter of an Indian immigrant father, 48-year-old Gideon figured in the list of candidates endorsed by Obama nationwide, the American Bazaar reported on Thursday.

“I’m proud to endorse this diverse and hopeful collection of thoughtful, empathetic and highly qualified Democrats,” Obama said in a statement on Monday releasing the list.

“Together, these candidates will help us redeem our country’s promise by sticking up for working people, restoring fairness and opportunity to our system, and fighting for the good of all Americans — not just those at the top,” he said.

Currently speaker of the Maine state Assembly, Gideon has also been endorsed by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

Gideon, who is maintaining a narrow lead over Collins in recent polls, has also won the

Sara Gideon support of major labour unions and raised a record $23 million for her campaign.

After New Jersey entrepreneur Rik Mehta, she is the second Indian-American to have won a Senate primary race in 2020 elections, said the American Bazaar report.

If elected in November, she will be the second Indian-American women to be elected to the US Senate after Kamala Harris.

Crash in North Delta sends 9 to hospital DELTA Police were called to the scene of a significant two-vehicle collision at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Sunday in the 7400-block of 120th Street in North Delta.

One vehicle had been travelling southbound on 120th Street when it collided with another vehicle turning westbound from 120th to the Mall Access road. One of the vehicles involved in the collision was pushed over the sidewalk and into Hydro boxes, at that point striking a pedestrian.

Each vehicle had four occupants in the car, for a total of nine people involved in the collision, including the pedestrian. Two of the occupants in one vehicle were young children.

“Everyone involved in the collision was taken to hospital. There was an array of injuries, ranging from minor to serious,” said Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police. “Fortunately, the two children involved in the collision only had minor injuries and have already been released from hospital.”

“We’d like to thank the

members of the public who assisted those involved in the crash, and who stayed on the scene to give statements to police. One of the vehicles was also on fire for a short period of time, and it was definitely a traumatic incident to witness.”

She said that anyone who witnessed the event and may need assistance can contact Delta Police Victim Services at 604-940-5019.

“We’d also like to acknowledge the efforts of our partner agencies, including BC Ambulance, Delta Fire Department, Delta Works and the Surrey RCMP, and their assistance with responding to this significant collision,” added Leykauf.

Roads were closed in the 7400-block of 120th Street until approximately 6 a.m. on Monday (August 10) when one lane re-opened southbound and all lanes re-opened northbound. Motorists can expect delays in the area as Hydro crews are anticipated to be on scene for hours, making repairs.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

NDP sanction privacy breach as B.C. medical records sent to U.S. and India: B.C. Liberals DOCUMENTS obtained by the Official Opposition reveal that the private medical information of British Columbians, potentially ranging from medical records and exam results to medical cannabis prescriptions, are now accessible to American and Indian IT contractors with the blessing of the NDP government.

“John Horgan and the NDP government are allowing the private and highly personal medical records of British Columbians to be accessed by American and Indian contractors. Not only is this completely unethical, but it’s also flat out illegal,” said Jas Johal, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough.

“President Trump and his U.S.

Administration, who have shown increased hostility towards Canadians, now have access to these files. Under the Patriot Act, the U.S. government can now utilize the information as they wish — including barring British Columbians entry to the United States.”

On July 29, NTT Canada took over the previous government

contract from IBM Canada to provide IT services to health authorities, which has led to thousands of IT help desk requests backlogged in the new system. Documents obtained by the Official Opposition show that NTT has enlisted contractors located in the U.S. and India to help address the backlog and as a result, at least

5,000 private medical files are accessible to workers outside of Canada — a clear violation of B.C. law.

The fund provides $100,000 in total to select students at universities around the world, with each grant awarded ranging up to $5,000. The Action Fund was first announced by former U.S. President Bill Clinton during the 2020 CGI U At Home virtual event, which featured conversations with national and international government and public health leaders.

These projects are made through CGI U’s “Commitment to Action” model, pioneered by Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in 2005. From 2005 through 2016, more than 3,600 commitments were made through CGI which have improved the lives of over 435 million people worldwide.

In addition to receiving seed funding from the Action Fund for their commitments, all selected students who are new to the CGI U program will receive invitations to participate in CGI U 2021. Pathway to permanent residency for asylum claimants on front lines of pandemic IN recognition of the exceptional service of front-line workers playing a critical role in keeping Canadians healthy, Marco E. L. Mendicino, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on Friday

announced a temporary measure that will provide a pathway to permanent residency for asylum claimants working in the healthcare sector during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mendicino said: “The government recog-

nizes the extraordinary contribution of asylum claimants working in Canada’s healthcare sector during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in long-term care centres. As these individuals face an uncertain future in Canada, the current circumstances merit exceptional measures in recognition of their service during the pandemic.”

Under this measure, asylum claimants across the country who are working on the front lines providing direct care to patients in health-care institutions will be able to apply for permanent residency if they meet the criteria. Quebec will select those qualifying for this special measure who wish to reside in Quebec. This approach recognizes those with precarious immigration status who are filling an urgent need and putting their own lives at risk to care for others in Canada.

When their mother said no, “the man said that they could have a team of people that could come to her home to check and asked [her] for her address,” the reader said.

“Luckily my mom didn’t believe them and hung up the phone, but I worry that this kind of phone call (especially with them speaking in Punjabi) could result in something more serious for someone.

ICBC: New Enhanced Care coverage starts May 2021 ICBC will embark on a new way of doing auto insurance in British Columbia, the largest transformation in its 40-year history, the Province said on Friday.

The Enhanced Care coverage bill, expected to receive royal assent on Friday, August 14, 2020, will save British Columbians on average 20% or about $400 on their auto insurance. It will also provide increased care and recovery benefits for people. It will increase from the current limit of $300,000 to a maximum of at least $7.5 million, providing the care people need for as long as they need it, should they be injured in a crash.

Framework gives renters until July 2021 to repay arrears DETAILS on the new repayment framework for renters with outstanding rent from April to August 2020 are available on the Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) website, with the moratorium on evictions for non-payment of rent ending ahead of September 1.

As announced on July 16, renters will be expected to pay rent in full on September 1, 2020, as the moratorium on evictions for nonpayment of rent will end on August 18. Renters in arrears from rent due dur-

ing the specified period of March 18 to August 17 will have until at least July 2021 to pay back any rent they owe, with the first repayments not starting until October at the earliest.

The rental framework will protect renters by ensuring they cannot be evicted for a missed or late rent payment from March 18 to August 17, unless a renter defaults on their repayment plan.

The terms of the repayment plan must include: * amount of outstanding rent;

* start date of the repayment plan; * amount of each instalment; and * dates for each instalment.

The repayment instalments must begin at least 30 days after the date the plan is given by the landlord to the renter. It also must give renters until July 2021 for the final repayments to be made, unless the landlord and renter agree to a longer period. Similarly, while it will be paid in equal instalments, renters and landlords have the option of agreeing to

smaller amounts being paid each month in the beginning of the repayment process.

Each monthly instalment must be paid on the same date the rent is due. For example, if a repayment plan is delivered to the renter on August 29 and rent is due on the first of each month, the first instalment is due October 1, 2020.

To further support renters at this time, the Province is continuing to temporarily prohibit landlords from charging rent increases un-

til December 2020. A renter who has been issued a notice of rent increase for an earlier date should not pay the increase and continue to pay their current amount until then.

The Temporary Rental Supplement also remains available to people until August 31, 2020. To date, the supplement has assisted more than 86,000 households with paying their rent during the pandemic.

Renters who are still experiencing a loss of income may also be eligible for either the

Rental Assistance Program (RAP) or the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) programs, which provide ongoing rental subsidies for low- and moderate-income families and seniors. When individuals Carla Qualtrough begin transitioning off of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) back to EI regular benefits at the end of this month, those living in EI regions with an unemployment rate lower than 13.1% will have their EI benefits calculated on the basis of the 13.1% rate, while individuals living in regions with a higher unemployment rate will have their benefits calculated using the actual rate for that region.

This temporary measure will establish minimum entry requirements for EI eligibility across the country for Canadians to access the income support they need now or might need later as Canadians continue to deal with the economic impacts of COVID-19.

This is the first in a series of steps, to be announced in the coming weeks, that will help eligible Canadians transition from emergency income measures back into the EI system and into the labour force as we work together to best position our country for a strong economic recovery, Qualtrough said.

“Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our government has taken action to support Canadians and businesses facing financial hardship. As we carefully and gradually restart parts of our economy, we recognize that many Canadian workers continue to face challenges. The temporary use of a national minimum unemployment rate for the EI program will help more people access EI regular benefits and provide eligible Canadians with access to a minimum 26 weeks of benefits,” she said.

Quick Facts * Employment Insurance regular benefits provide income support to individuals who lose their jobs through no fault of their own and are available for and able to work, but can’t find a job. * This temporary measure will set a uniform eligibility requirement for EI regular benefits, provide a minimum entitlement of 26 weeks of benefits, and set the number of best weeks of earnings used in the calculation of the weekly benefit rate at 14. * Normally, a claimant can qualify to receive EI regular benefits from 14 weeks up to a maximum of 45 weeks, depending on the unemployment rate in the region where they reside at the time of filing their claim and the amount of insurable hours accumulated in the last 52 weeks or since their last claim, whichever is shorter.

Federal government launches updated Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy Calculator DIANE Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, on Tuesday launched an updated and improved Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy online calculator. It will help small and large employers alike prepare to apply for the next period of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program, which will open for applications on August 17.

CEWS helps employers who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to keep workers on their payroll or bring back previously laid-off employees. To ensure that Canadian workers and businesses are in a better position as the economy safely re-opens, the federal government has recently implemented changes to the CEWS that broaden the reach of the program and provide better targeted support.

The CEWS calculator can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency’s Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy web page, which includes detailed information to help employers understand how the CEWS can support their employees and operations, who is eligible to apply, and how claim periods are structured. The calculator uses a step-by-step approach to get employers to enter information about their business situation to provide an estimate of the subsidy they can expect to receive.

The calculator also includes printable spreadsheet and statement features that employers can use to view their claim at a glance and enter required information into the CEWS application form quickly and easily.

By providing employers with detailed information about their subsidy claim, the CEWS calculator can assist them in making informed decisions about retaining or re-hiring workers. The CRA will conduct a series of information sessions in the coming weeks for eligible employers and stakeholder organizations.

The CRA will open applications for CEWS Period 5 on August 17. Enhancements to the program, which are being introduced in Period 5, will include expanding eligibility criteria, introducing a sliding revenue-decline test to determine the subsidy amount, and providing a top-up subsidy for the most impacted employers. Employers can expect to receive their payment within 3-5 business days after applying if they are registered with direct deposit on their payroll account.

The CEWS exists to help workers transition back to their jobs and to support employers as they increase their revenues. The CRA is committed to providing employers – including newly eligible employers as a result of the enhanced CEWS – with the information and resources they need to apply and benefit from this important economic measure.

Lebouthillier said: “The CRA has been working around the clock to deliver the Government of Canada’s COVID-19 response plan and the results have been outstanding. The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy has enabled employers across the country to keep or re-hire millions of Canadians. Shooting in Delta’s Tsawwassen area AT approximately 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, Delta Police responded to reports of gunshots on Parkgrove Crescent in Tsawwassen. There are no reported injuries, but Delta Police say they can confirm evidence of a shooting.

Orientation week ensures a safe, ready and welcome return to school: Education Minister TO ensure schools are ready to welcome students into classrooms for the week of September 8-11, there will be a gradual restart to allow extra time to orient students and staff on the new health and safety measures in place.

“Schools are going to look different in September,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education, on Wednesday. “Staff, students and parents need time to get familiar with all the new health and safety procedures that are designed to keep them safe and confident in their school settings.”

Starting September 8, all staff will meet with their school’s joint health and safety committee to receive instructions about how the updated guidelines, co-developed with the BC Centre for Disease Control and provincial health officer, will work in their school. This will also allow time for educators and staff to adjust to their new routines, finalize plans for learning groups, review health and safety protocols, and confirm lesson plans that align with the new normal in schools.

Students will be welcomed back to class for orientation by September 10 and will use their orientation time to get familiar with classrooms that will look different than they did before the pandemic. Students will be assigned to their class, find out who is in their learning group, practise their new routines and familiarize themselves with how to safely move from the class to outdoor and common areas of the school.

On August 10, School districts were provided with readiness checklists to ensure they are updating their health and safety plans and considering, communicating and consulting with their unions, Indigenous rightsholders, staff and families in their local communities. They will also need to ensure their plans address equity and inclusion of children who require additional support in school.

Health and safety of teachers, staff and students are leading the work being done by the K-12 education restart steering committee and working groups with membership from all education partners and health experts. These groups are also working to create detailed operational guidelines, which will be available by August 17 to support school districts with their restart plans, including guidance on: * implementing the updated health and safety protocols; * ensuring kids who require extra support are prioritized and have the services they need; * supporting the mental health and wellness of students who may be experiencing additional challenges because of the pandemic; * ensuring fewer contacts and a safe workplace for those who interact with more than one learning group – such as specialists, teachers on call, educational assistants, cafeteria staff or bus drivers; * supporting hybrid instruction with a blend of in-person learning and remote learning for dense urban secondary schools with large student populations; * minimizing physical contact within learning groups; and * ensuring before- and after-school child care on school grounds allows kids to stay within their learning groups as much as possible.

This ended any hope that this much-needed project would ever be built by the BC Liberals.

But Premier John Horgan is taking action, by making a second hospital a reality for the people of Surrey.

On Thursday, the Premier announced that the new Surrey hospital would be home to BC’s seventh regional cancer centre, building on the plan announced in December to build a state-of-the-art health facility on a new site in Cloverdale.

There are few things more frightening than a cancer diagnosis. It is scary for the person with the disease and it is devastating to their family and friends.

This cancer centre will save lives.

This project demonstrates the difference between John Horgan and Andrew Wilkinson when it comes to Surrey. Mr. Wilkinson was more interested in selling land at bargain prices than ensuring a fast-growing community like Surrey had adequate access to health services.

The clear difference between our approach and Andrew Wilkinson’s is not isolated to health care.

Since forming government, we have invested over $363 million in new schools, expansions and seismic upgrades in Surrey.

In the Surrey School District, the pace of approvals has tripled under our government. These projects are helping nearly 8,700 students move from portables to classrooms between September 2018 and 2023.

We have also made historic investments in child care, creating 2063 new child care spaces in Surrey and putting over $76 million back into the pockets of Surrey families.

We have helped Surrey families reduce costs by getting rid of tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges and eliminating the MSP. We’re replacing the Pattullo Bridge and building rapid transit in Surrey.

We know there is much more to do in Surrey.

However, we also know that the progress we have made together could be erased by Andrew Wilkinson. That’s a risk we can’t afford.

Governing is about choices.

And as long as he is premier, John Horgan will choose to put the needs of the people of Surrey first.

Homemade explosive devices raise safety concern in South Surrey SURREY RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the person or group of people responsible for setting off homemade explosive devices in South Surrey.

Between July 19 and August 9, Surrey RCMP received numerous reports of loud bangs heard in the green-space near 4th Avenue and 171st Street. On July 19, witnesses who called police, observed a group of young adult males exiting the green-space following a loud bang. Officers from the Surrey RCMP Community Response Unit officers attended and located the remnants of a small improvised explosive device. While there have been no reports of injuries as a result of these devices, officers are asking the public to be aware, and should they come across one of these devices, to not pick it up and call police immediately.

A description of one of the suspects is available. The young man is described as a white male in his late teens to early 20’s, 5’10” to 6’ tall, approximately 175 lbs, with dark cleancut hair. The suspect was seen wearing a white t-shirt, dark shorts and dark shoes and is known to ride a black mountain bike.

“Homemade devices such as these are dangerous and unpredictable,” said Cpl. Bob Keay of the Surrey RCMP Community Response Unit, on Friday. “If you’re in the area and see a suspicious device please leave it where it is and give us a call as soon as possible.”

Legislature adjourns with no economic recovery plan from Horgan in sight: Wilkinson AFTER returning to the Legislature in June, following a COVID-19 hiatus, Premier John Horgan and the NDP are wrapping up the sitting of parliament today still without any plan to remobilize the economy, says B.C. Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson.

AN upward trend in the number of personal robberies has Surrey RCMP reminding the public of some important personal safety practices.

The second quarter statistics for 2020, show an increase in robberies with 50 additional files (+83%), and a 47% increase year–todate over 2019. So far, charges have been laid or recommended in 26% of these investigations.

As the public was informed earlier this year on two separate occasions, Surrey has had an uptick in personal robberies involving online marketplace apps (Letgo, Craigslist, etc.), with 10 incidents in the second quarter.

Other personal robberies have included crimes of opportunity where victims had high value items stolen. Robberies were also noted to have occurred between parties known to one another, related to unsettled personal debts.

Thieves will often target individuals who are walking alone and distracted by phones or other electronic devices. A simple yet effec-

tive strategy to avoid being the target of a robbery is to maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times, say Surrey RCMP. Some other safety practices include: * Walk with confidence. Keep your head up and know where you are going. * Limit distractions. Store mobile phones and other valuables out of sight and remove your headphones. * Stay visible. Stick to well-lit areas and don’t wear dark clothing at night. * Take only your essentials. Carry only the necessary identification, money, or cards that you need.

“If you are approached and threatened, or assaulted, you may be able to avoid further harm by giving the assailant the property they are after,” says Sgt. Ryan Forbes of the Surrey RCMP Robbery Unit. “There are no pieces of property that are worth risking your personal safety for.”

84 new COVID-19 cases in B.C.; no new deaths HEALTH Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on Friday announced 84 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), for a total of 4,358 cases in British Columbia. This includes two cases that are epidemiologically linked.

There were no new COVID-19-related deaths, and the total number of deaths stands at 196 in the province.

There are 629 active cases of COVID-19 in the province and 3,533 people who tested positive have recovered.

Currently, 12 individuals are hospitalized with COVID-19, four of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation. As well, 2,026 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,354 cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 2,276 in the Fraser Health region, 150 in the Island Health region, 399 in the Interior Health region, 107 in the Northern Health region and 72 cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There has been one new health-care facility outbreak in the Fraser Health region at Queen’s Park Care Centre. In total, seven long-term care or assisted-living facilities and two acute-care facilities have active outbreaks.

There are no new community outbreaks. However, there continue to be community exposure events around the province and on flights into and out of British Columbia.

Alerts are posted on the BC Centre for Disease Control’s (BCCDC) website, as well as on health authorities’ websites, providing details on where

the potential exposure occurred and what actions to take – whether you need to immediately selfisolate, or monitor for symptoms.

Dix and Henry added: “This weekend, we urge everyone to stay strong and hold the line.

“We have it within our ability to make the changes we need to bend our pandemic curve back down and continue in our B.C. restart, but it takes the combined efforts of everyone, not just a few.

“Keeping a safe distance from people you don’t know or who are not in your close group of family and friends is an important way to protect yourself from COVID-19 transmission. And always stay home and stay away from others if you have symptoms of COVID-19, however mild.

“Throughout the pandemic, regional health authorities have worked with municipalities, WorkSafe BC, and law enforcement to support and educate British Columbians about COVID-19 safety – in some cases establishing joint teams to visit shops, businesses, beaches and other public spaces to ensure we all follow public health guidance and direction.

“In the Vancouver Coastal Health region, ongoing surveillance and enforcement operations have resulted in the closure of several bars, restaurants and nightclubs following transmission events: some by public health order and others voluntarily.

“This weekend, let’s all do our part to bend the curve back down and use our influence to bring our family and friends on board if they have strayed.

“Remember that each new interaction outside your bubble holds a risk that you then bring back to your family and friends. In these circumstances, we must stand together, by staying apart.”

Strong Recovery Continues for BC Housing Markets Vancouver, BC: August 13, 2020. The British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) reports that a total of 10,090 residential unit sales were recorded by the Multiple Listing ServiceÂŽ (MLSÂŽ) in July 2020, an increase of 26.6 per cent from July 2019. The average MLSÂŽ residential price in BC was $770,810, a 12.9 per cent increase from $682,702 recorded the previous year. Total sales dollar volume in July was $7.8 billion, a 43 per cent increase over 2019. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The strong recovery in sales activity continued in July,â&#x20AC;? said BCREA Chief Economist Brendon Ogmundson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Increased demand for more living space combined with an undersupplied market is producing significant upward pressure on home prices,

Hepatitis C is silent like the fog

IT’S a shame when you are slowly dying from a disease you don’t know you have. To boot, what a tragedy if there is a cure. Yet this ignorance is a reality for many aging boomers who don’t know that they are infected with the hepatitis C virus.

Anyone can contract hepatitis C. Infection occurs through transmission of tainted blood. It’s rare to be infected today through the healthcare system, as we’ve gotten much better at screening blood products and of course sterilizing medical equipment. Today, it is likely the reuse of injection needles by users of street drugs that leads to infection. Some people become infected from getting tattoos or piercings with poorly sterilized equipment. But for baby-boomers, born between 1945 and 1965, it’s believed that hepatitis C was transmitted long ago through contact with contaminated blood, before robust infection controls were in place.

About 75 percent of North Americans carrying the virus are baby boomers.

Estimates suggest that 250,000 Canadians are infected and about 3 million Americans.

A good many of them don’t know it.

Just like a thick fog, hepatitis C is eerily silent. It innocuously takes its toll on your liver.

Our bodies are designed to fight foreign invaders. For example, when a misstep leads to a splinter in your foot, your immune system kicks into action.

Your body targets a range of immune

system cells to the injury, and redness and swelling are signs that the battle to overcome invading bacteria has begun. In the case of hepatitis C infection, the virus finds a home in the liver, reproducing faster than the body’s immune cell fighters can beat it. The result is a perpetual state of inflammation in the liver. The battle also results in a gradual death of liver cells, which in turn causes fibrosis or scarring. Fibrosis itself isn’t a problem. But in time, functionality of the liver becomes so impaired that there isn’t enough blood flow for the liver to do its work.

Only after substantial damage is done do symptoms start to appear. Fatigue, easy bruising, jaundiced eyes, swelling in the legs, dark-coloured urine. These are some of the signs that not all is well.

The good news is that hepatitis C can be detected through a series of tests.

And it can be treated. Over the past decade, advances in direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have led to highly effective treatments lasting between 2 and 5 months. The only catch is in the cost of the medications, and coast to coast there are different rules about who qualifies for coverage. Generally, coverage is extended only to those with advanced severity of liver disease. For everyone else, the price of the drugs may outweigh the cost of monitoring the progression of the disease carefully.

But how do you know you have these options if you don’t even know you have the problem? The best advice is to talk with your doctor about your likely risk factors. Did you receive a blood transfusion prior to 1990? Do you, or did you, inject drugs with used needles? Have you resided in countries where hepatitis C is a problem (e.g.

India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Egypt, even southern Italy) and received medical care or vaccinations? Have you shared

a razor, nail clippers or toothbrush with an infected person?

If concerns are high or if symptoms are present, then have tests done. Either that or run the risk of blissful ignorance while your liver takes the toll.

Joseph Conrad wrote, “It is not the clear-sighted who rule the world. Great achievements are accomplished in a blessed, warm fog.” Let’s hope that is the case for those with hepatitis C who go undiagnosed.

Kamala Harris’ nomination moment of pride for Indians: Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister Chennai (IANS): Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Wednesday termed the nomination of US Senator Kamala Harris as the Democrats’ Vice Presidential candidate for the upcoming US poll as a moment of pride for Indians.

Panneerselvam tweeted: “It is a moment of pride for Indians and Tamil Nadu especially, as Kamala Harris, the first Indian senator, whose mother hails from Tamil Nadu has been nominated as the Vice Presidential candidate by the US Democratic party. My hearty wishes to her.”

DMK MP Kanimozhi in a tweet said: “It’s really a matter of pride

that Democratic Presidential nominee @JoeBiden has chosen US politician of Indian Tamil origin Kamala Harris as his VP running mate for the US Presidential elections. I wish Kamala Harris the best in the US elections. Good to see the inclusiveness.”

Kamala Harris, whose mother tongue is Tamil, is the first IndianAmerican to be the Vice Presidential choice in a US Presidential election.

Her mother Shyamala Gopalan had gone to the US to study medicine and became a cancer researcher.

She later married Donald Harris, a Jamaican economist. The couple had two daughters - Kamala and Maya - but subsequently divorced.

Though born and raised in the US, a young Kamala often visited her maternal grandparents in

Chennai’s Besant Nagar locality, and had strolled on the Elliots Beach here along with her grandfather P.V. Gopalan, a retired civil servant.

COVID-19 cases haven’t yet peaked or even plateaued in India: AIIMS Director

New Delhi (IANS): All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director Randeep Guleria, one of India’s leading medical experts, has asserted that the COVID-19 cases in the country have not yet hit their peak or even plateaued.

The remarks come at a time when the infections are racing ahead with the country adding at least a lakh new cases every two days. It has logged more than 2.3 million cases and over 46,000 deaths so far since the first case on January 30.

“These are trying times. It has tested the resilience of the nation.

Section 144 in riot-hit Bengaluru areas till August 15 Bengaluru (IANS): Section 144 - which is used to prohibit assembly of one or more persons when unrest is anticipated - was extended in affected localities affected by the Bengaluru riots in the east of the city, an official said on Thursday.

Over 70% COVID-19 patients recover in India: Government New Delhi (IANS): The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday said that the country’s COVID-19 recovery rate has soared past 70 per cent due to successful implementation of an effective containment strategy, and aggressive and comprehensive testing coupled with standardised clinical management.

India has logged more than 2.3 million COVID-19 cases and over 46,000 deaths. Even though the infections are racing ahead, with the country adding at least 100,000 new cases every two days, the gap between recoveries and active cases is growing every day.

According to the ministry, “The record highest singleday recoveries at 56,110 was registered in the last 24 hours. The coordinated efforts of the Centre, state and

UT governments have resulted in continuously increasing average daily recoveries. The recovery rate has reached another high of 70.38 per cent.”

Out of the total 2,329,638 cases, recoveries have surged to 1,639,599. The actual caseload of the country is the active cases, which currently stand at 643,948 and are only 27.64 per cent of the total cases.

In the first week of July, the daily average recovered cases were at 15,000 which jumped to more than 50,000 in the first week of August.

Besides this, as a result of the focus on effective clinical treatment, use of non-invasive, improved and coordinated services of ambulances and timely treatment have resulted in a drop in the case fatality rate.

The case fatality rate is the proportion of people who die from a specified disease among all individuals diagnosed with the disease over a certain period of time and is used as a measure of disease severity, and it stands at 1.98 per cent.

The Health Ministry said that the country’s test, track and treat strategy has achieved another peak with 733,449 tests done in the last 24 hours.

This has taken the cumulative tests to more than 26 million. The tests per million has also jumped to 18,852.

“To keep up with this strategy, the testing lab network in the country is continuously strengthened which as of today consists of 1,421 labs in the country; 944 labs in the government sector and 477 private labs,” the ministry added.

Prime Minister Modi unveils ‘transparent taxation’, rights charter for taxpayers New Delhi (IANS): To further digitise the Income Tax Department’s functioning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the ‘transparent taxation’ platform among other reforms.

Consequently, the move brings into effect faceless assessment of taxpayers, faceless appeals and the Rights’ Charter for the taxpayers.

With the ‘Transparent Taxation Honouring the Honest’ that is aimed at carrying forward the journey of direct tax reforms, the taxpayers would not be harassed or treated with suspicion here on.

Speaking at the launch, the Prime Minister said that India is among a few countries giving such rights and dignity to

Narendra Modi the taxpayers.

He said that the charter has been introduced with defined rights and responsibilities.

From here on the Income Tax Department cannot doubt anyone without a basis, he said.

Modi is of the view that the structural reforms will add a new dimension along with the transparent taxation platform. He also noted that re-

forms should be policy-driven and holistic.

Modi pointed out that tax dispute appeals will also be faceless.

He cited that technology has changed allowing for scrutiny process to be distributed randomly. Furthermore, he said that tax scrutiny rate has reduced by a fourth in the last few years. In FY19, there was only 0.26 per cent scrutiny.

Speaking of the recent measures, he said that nearly 300,000 cases were resolved under the ‘Vivaad Se Vishwas’ scheme.

He also appealed to the citizens and said that those who are capable of paying taxes but not in the tax net should also voluntarily pay taxes.

Tax raids to be approved only by Income Tax top brass: Government New Delhi (IANS): In a major move to curb unauthorised income tax surveys and raids, the Centre has now come out with an order that only the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) and the Chief Commissioner for Income Tax (TDS) can approve I-T raids.

In an order, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) directed that the officers posted in Directorates of Investigation and Commissionerates of TDS, “only and exclusively” shall act as “income tax authority” for the purposes of power of survey under section 133A of the Income Tax Act. “The competent authority for approval of such survey action u/s 133A of the Act shall henceforth be DGIT (Inv)

for investigation wing and Pr. CCIT/CCIT (TDS) for TDS charges, as the case may be,” said the order.

It noted that the survey action under section 133A of the Act being an intrusive action, it is expected that the same should be carried out with utmost responsibility and accountability.

Under section 133A of the Income Tax Act, an income-tax officer or any authorised inspector of income tax can enter any place within the limits of the area assigned to him, or any place occupied by any person in respect of whom the income-tax officer exercises jurisdiction or at which a business or profession is carried on, for tax surveys and raids.

The concerned officer may also inspect books of account or other documents as he may require and which may be available at such place.

In another order CBDT has directed that all the assessment orders shall hereafter be passed by National e-Assessment Centre through the Faceless Assessment Scheme 2019. Any assessment order which is not in conformity shall be treated as “non-est” and shall be deemed to have never been passed.

Both the orders come into effect immediately. The developments come in the wake of the launch of the ‘Transparent Taxation’ platform which rolls out faceless assessment and appeals along with the taxpayers’ charter of rights.

Sanjay Dutt diagnosed with lung cancer Mumbai (IANS): Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has been diagnosed with lung cancer, it was revealed on Tuesday.

The news was confirmed by trade analyst and film industry insider Komal Nahta on Tuesday night.

“Sanjay Dutt diagnosed with lung cancer. Let’s pray for his speedy recovery,” tweeted Nahta on his verified Twitter account, @KomalNahta.

According to reports, Dutt will fly to the US for treatment soon.

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, as the news spread that the 61-year-old actor may have cancer, Dutt had taken to social media to urge well-wishers not to worry or unnecessarily speculate.

New Delhi (IANS): Amid the demand for a new party chief from various quarters within the party, the Congress on Tuesday hinted that Rahul Gandhi may not be reluctant to take over as President in the near future even as it credited him with resolving the Rajasthan crisis.

Responding to a question during a virtual press conference, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, when reminded that Rahul Gandhi had refused to take the post in the past, replied “I don’t think either I or you or any of us have recently spoken to him (Rahul Gandhi) on the issue.” He insisted that the reason for Rahul’s resignation last year was on “moral grounds”, taking responsibility for the party’s defeat in the general election.

‘Khalistan flag’ unfurled on government building in Punjab’s Moga Chandigarh (IANS): Two unidentified people unfurled a saffron flag with “Khalistan” inscribed on it on the roof of the district administrative complex in Punjab’s Moga town on Friday morning after removing the tricolour, police said.

The duo cut the ropes of the tricolour installed at the

building, which also houses the office of the Deputy Commissioner, lowered it down and took it away.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV. On getting information about the incident, the police removed the Khalistan flag, and installed a new tricolour. A case was registered under the Prevention

of Insults to National Honour Act. Senior Superintendent of Police Harmanbir Gill told the media that the saffron flag with the ‘Khanda’ symbol and the word Khalistan painted on it was installed at 8.15 a.m.

Punjab Chief Minister launches ‘Smart Connect Scheme’, gives smartphones to students Chandigarh (IANS): The Punjab government on Wednesday took a major digital leap forward with the statewide launch of its Rs 92 crore ‘Punjab Smart Connect Scheme’ by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who handed over smartphones to six Class XII students in a symbolic gesture.

Simultaneous distribution of phones was done at 26 places by various ministers, legislators and others.

Each minister personally handed over 20 phones in various districts to mark the launch of the scheme, which also marked the fulfilment of a major poll promise of the Congress government in the state.

The scheme, for which Rs 1,000 million was allocated in the state budget for 201718, will benefit 174,015 Class XII students of government schools in the first phase, to be completed by November.

Of these, 87,395 are boys and 86,620 girls, with a majority in the Other Backward Class, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories -- thus bridging a major divide that was obstructing these students from affordable access to digital education.

The bulk of the students - 111,857 -- are from the rural areas, and the remaining are in urban government schools, a government statement said.

Amarinder Singh, who launched the scheme through video conferencing at the Secretariat here, said people believe in the promises listed in the election manifesto and it was, thus, his duty to ensure the im-

plementation of each one of them.

When the Congress listed smartphones as a poll promise, it was to provide global connectivity and empower the poor youth who could not afford them, said Amarinder Singh, adding that in the present pandemic situation these phones had assumed more importance as they had become a necessity for education continuity.

It was the money of the people of Punjab which his government was spending on advancement of the youth, the Chief Minister said, adding the phones were planned to be distributed in March but the process got delayed due to the COVID-19 crisis.

The Chief Minister said he wanted Punjab’s students to be abreast with the latest technology which they can use effectively for their education, which leverages technology in a big way today.

Students Arshdeep Kaur, Satinder Kaur, Sukhbir Kaur, Amanjot Singh, Ram Singh and Amanveer Singh from various government senior secondary schools of Mohali district said the smartphones they received would provide them with the much-needed access to online education in these difficult COVID-19 times.

Gagandeep, a girl student and a labourer’s daughter from Hoshiarpur, told the Chief Minister on video that though she had got 85 per cent marks in Class XI, she had lost out majorly in studies over the past few months due to the lack of a smartphone.

Punjab leaders should air grievances at party forum only: Congress New Delhi/Dalhousie (IANS): Amid the war of words between Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and former State President and Rajya Sabha MP Partap Singh Bajwa, the Congress has said that those having grievances should speak at the party forum only.

Speaking over the phone from Dalhousie, Congress in-charge of Punjab Asha Kumari said, “Everyone who has grievances against anybody should speak to party leaders and raise the issue in party forums. Speaking to the press is not acceptable.”

MLA was going against the party. The party also said that the Rajya Sabha MP was seeking public attention.

State Congress chief Sunil Jakhar has written to the party leadership and sought Bajwa’s removal. Sources say that the matter has been referred to the disciplinary committee headed by former Defence Minister A. K. Antony.

The Punjab government has withdrawn the state police security of Bajwa, to which Bajwa responded: “Security is given to a person for protection of his life and should not be a tool

to browbeat into submission.

In any case, this trick will not work with me”.

The differences between Bajwa and Amarinder Singh exist since 2013 when Bajwa replaced Amarinder after two consecutive losses in the polls.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi had on Sunday said, “The MPs have raised some issues and it’s unfortunate that hard words were used from both the sides, but the Chief Minister has said that he will take strict action against the culprits.”

Punjab seeks liberal finances amid pandemic Chandigarh (IANS): Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and a 50 per cent revenue decline for the first quarter of this fiscal year in Punjab, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday sought from Prime Minister Narendra Modi a liberal financial package for states to fill the collection gap caused by the pandemic, and also flexibility on COVID19-related terms of expenditure in the SDRF. During a video conference meet of the Prime Minister with Chief Ministers of some states to review the situation, Amarinder Singh said the current cap of 35 per cent in State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) for COVID-19-related expenditure, as per Ministry of Home Affairs’ guidelines, is not sufficient to meet the current requirements.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan also participated in the meeting.

The Chief Minister thanked the Government for India for accepting Punjab’s proposal to set up a National Institute of Virology for the north zone and said the state will soon give 25 acres of land in this regard.

Citing the state’s rising cases of COVID-19, which have gone up to 24,891 with 604 deaths, the Chief Minister urged the Prime Minister to review the UGC decision on mandatory exams for exit classes to be held

by September 30.

Punjab may not be in a position to conduct exams in September as it may be facing its peak at that time, he said, suggesting promoting these students promoted on past performance and internal assessment, with option to take exams later for those wanting to improve their performance.

He also sought the Central government assistance for online school education, espe-

cially for poor children of Classes 10 and 12.

More money was needed for creating the infrastructure needed to support online education, he added.

Though Punjab was conducting 23,000 tests per million for coronavirus (higher than the national average), and planned to increase RT-PCR tests from 12,000 to 20,000 in the next 15 days, it needed to scale up the testing capacity further, the Chief Minister stressed.

He requested the Prime Minister to direct government of India institutions in Chandigarh and Punjab to increase testing capacity, as already written to him earlier.

Expressing concern over the state’s mortality rate of 2.4 per cent, Amarinder Singh said though it was lower than the all-India deaths per million and 91 per cent of the fatality cases were with co-morbidity, it was

still higher than neighbouring Haryana.

Patients were coming to hospitals late and 86 per cent deaths were occurring in tertiary hospitals, he added.

Amarinder Singh also requested immediate operationalisation of Covid-19 testing and treatment at AIIMS in Bathinda, where OPDs are already functional, and said this will be useful for the people of southern Punjab.

Noting that the PGI Hospital in Chandigarh is a premier tertiary care facility for Punjab, he also sought increase in the bed capacity at the hospital and strengthening of the existing PGI Satellite Centre at Sangrur, especially for coronavirus treatment.

Brar, posted as DSP (Detective) in S.A.S. Nagar with the additional charge in the Organized

Crime Control Unit (OCCU), has also busted a racket of illegal diversion of 160 firearms from gun houses to terrorists and gangsters.

Gupta said Brar was also the main officer of a major police operation that led to the arrest of 23 people, who had supplied illegal weapons used in the targeted killings between 2015 and 2017.

Brar was also the lead investigator in arresting

gangster Billa Mandiala and six of his associates who had links with Pakistan-based smugglers and terrorists.

The Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation was instituted in 2018 for promoting high professional standards of investigation of crime. A total of 121 police personnel has been awarded for 2020.

Burnaby RCMP's Investigative Support Team (IST) is continuing to investigate a shots fired incident that took place in the City early Wednesday morning. On July 1, 2020, just after 2:30 a.m., Burnaby RCMP responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the 4000-block of Hastings Street in the City. According to witnesses, a fight between a number of people occurred outside a business. Witnesses stated that multiple shots were fired at a vehicle in the area. Everyone involved then fled the area. No injuries have been reported in relation to this incident at this time.

The business at the location where this incident took place has been the subject of a number of calls for service for police in the last year including seven in June alone. Later, at 3 a.m., Port Moody police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that is believed to have been the vehicle that was shot at. The driver of this vehicle is currently not cooperating in our investigation and investigators are still working to determine his role in this incident.

Sushant case: Bihar govt, Rhea file written submissions in Apex Court New Delhi: Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty and the Bihar government filed their written submissions in the Supreme Court on Thursday on Chakraborty’s plea seeking to transfer an FIR lodged against her in Patna in connection with actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death to Mumbai.

Seeking the dismissal of Chakraborty’s petition, the Bihar government, in its written submissions filed through advocate Keshav Mohan, said, “No impediment would deserve to be allowed to come in the way of CBI to undertake and complete the investigation expeditiously.”

In her written submission, Chakraborty said the transfer of the probe to the Centreal Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the behest of the Bihar police was without jurisdiction.

The apex court had, on August 11, reserved its order on Chakraborty’s plea and asked the par-

ties concerned to file their written submissions

by Thursday.

The body of Rajput (34) was found hanging from the ceiling of his apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra on June 14 and since then, the Mumbai police is probing the case.

2020 Mazda Mazda6: Sleek Sport Sedan Delivers!

Autoreview by Veeno Dewan The 2020 Mazda6 is a cut above other, a desirable sedan that looks simply gorgeous. Extensively revised from 2018, the 2020 Mazda6 continues to offer a unique exterior, well-appointed interior, and sporty driving dynamics to keep drivers satisfied. No clunky, weird angles, creases, awkward cut lines or overdesigned elements here. The 2020 Mazda6 keeps it simple, with elegant flowing lines, wonderful curves sleek junctures, and brilliant paint colors such has the iconic soul red metallic as on our tester.

The Mazda6’s base engine is a 2.5-liter I-4 producing 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. Upgrading to the turbocharged 2.5-liter turbo-four improves output to 227 hp (250 hp on 93-octane gasoline) and 310 lb-ft of torque. All Mazda6 sedans are front-wheel drive and use a six-speed automatic transmission. For 2020, the Mazda6 is offered in five trims priced from a very competitive $27, 35 (GS model) to the GS-L, Grand Touring, and to the ultra - luxurious and lavishly equipped Signature trim as tested at $39,150.

We tested the top tier 2020 Mazda6 Signature with specific trim- exterior details like a dark

gray-finish grille with a bright silver surround and badging. Also added were: 19” alloy wheels, LED Signature exterior and interior lighting, The Signature model arrives with the Skyactiv-G 2.5 T with Dynamic Pressure Turbo, Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission with manualshift mode, Drive Selection switch and paddle shifters, and G-Vectoring Control Plus. Interior Signature highlights include: Signature lighting Traffic Plus and Travel Link® services (includes complimentary 5-year subscription), meter-set with 7” digital LCD display, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with memory function.

Signature models also arrive windshield-projected colour Active Driving Display, Traffic Sign Recognition System, Adaptive Front-lighting System, 360° View Monitor.

On the safety front, the Signature offers: Mazda Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go function, Smart Brake Support, Pedestrian Detection, Forward Obstruction Warning, Lane Departure Warning System, Lane-keep Assist System, High Beam Control, Smart City Brake Support, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear and Cross Traffic Alert

Interior wise, the Signature is nicely detailed with trim-specific unique stitching on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, a black headliner, LED ambient lighting, UltraSuede accents, and real wood trim pieces. What most owners will appreciate is the comfortable and luxuriously appointed cabin with its expansive seats wrapped in Nappa leather upholstery. The seat arrive both heated front and rear with ventilated front seats, along with a heated steering wheel, The design is simple, ye expensive looking with a clean uncluttered, look. Rich looking wood and smart detailing add to the ambiance.

All Mazda6 models are equipped with an 8.0inch infotainment touchscreen mounted on top of the dashboard. A console-mounted USB port, auxiliary audio input jack, and Bluetooth streaming audio are standard, Driver information is supplemented by a head-up display system, while Mazda’s connect command system is an easy to use the intuitive infotainment and navigation system interface The Mazda6’s trunk holds up to 14.7 cubic feet of cargo, but the standard 60/40 split second row seat also folds for carrying larger items.

The standard 187-hp engine offers a good balance of fuel economy and power offering good torque through the mid -range. I would personally opt for the turbo-four as fitted to our tester.

It’s a great engine, with lots of torque fir quicker acceleration the six-speed automatic transmission is a good match up. Thanks to a retuned suspension, the Mazda6’s already excellent handling gets even better, with a smoother ride, even more precise steering and impressively level cornering. A Drive Selection switch and paddle shifters, plus the G-Vectoring Control all add to the driver enjoyment and handling.

The overall result is a very lee sporty driving sedan... Fuel Economy Ratings City: 10.0 Highway: 7.5 (L/100km). Downside are few, there are no hybrid options, the back seat is tight and AWD would be nice to have. Still these points are overshadowed by the overall execution and finesse of this lithe, graceful looking sports sedan.

You may want to know the Mazda6 has impressive safety scores From the NHTSA, with a the MAZDA top five-star overall safety rating, comprised of five-star front and side impact scores, and a four-star rollover score. If you’re looking for a sleek, modern sedan with sporty handling, the Mazda6 is right in the frame. Add the turbocharged engine and a Signature trim line with its classy interior and you cannot go wrong.
