THE Edmonton Police Service last Friday announced that it had charged seven Edmonton youths in relation to the homicide of a 16-year-old male in southeast Edmonton on April 8.

The youth was identi�ied as 16-year-old Karanveer Sahota in the local media.

CBC Edmonton reported last week that the judge lifted the publication ban on the victim’s name after a challenge by the broadcaster.

On April 16, the boy had been identi�ied by family members who started a fundraiser for his parents.

By Wednesday (April 27), the fundraiser had exceeded its goal of $250,000.

The GoFundMe stated: “His father is on long-term disability, his mother can no longer work due to her grief, and she has a 13-year-old daughter to support.”

On Sunday, April 24, hundreds attended his funeral that was followed by a prayer service at the Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha.

On April 21, three of the youths, a 17-year-old female and two males aged 15 and 16, were charged with second-degree murder. The remaining four youths, two 14-yearold males and two males aged 15 and 16, were formally charged with second-degree murder on April 22.

The female youth is also facing a charge of obstruction.

Six youths were charged with attempted murder in relation to the assault and were arrested over several days within the �irst week following the assault. A warrant for attempted murder was also issued for the seventh youth. Their charges were all upgraded to second-degree murder after the youth succumbed to his injuries on April 15 and the autopsy was completed on April 20, police said.

The victim and suspects were known to each another and it is believed that this incident was an escalation of violence between two rival groups.

April 8, of�icers responded to the report of an assault outside of McNally High School. Police located a 16-year-old male suffering from life-threatening injuries. Police, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, and EMS provided �irst aid on scene, and paramedics treated and transported the youth to hospital.

Sadly, the youth succumbed to his injuries on April 15 and the Homicide Section took over the investigation.

On April 20, the Edmonton Medical Examiner completed an autopsy on the youth and the cause of death was a stab wound of the chest, and the manner of death was deemed homicide, police said in a press release.

THE BOLO Program (www. boloprogram.org) on Tuesday announced a reward of up to $100,000 for any information leading to the arrest of Gene Karl Lahrkamp, one of the two alleged killers of Indian gangster Jimi Sandhu.

Surrey RCMP investigate incident near mosque; mayor condemns all acts of hate

Police have identified person who they believe was driving suspect vehicle SURREY RCMP are investigating an incident that occurred outside a mosque on Wednesday evening and requesting anyone with information to contact police.

On April 27, just before 11 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a report that water had been thrown from a moving vehicle at three pedestrians from the Muslim community who were walking in the area of 124 Street and 72A Avenue.

Within minutes of the initial report, a subsequent call was received that the same vehicle left the roadway and almost struck one of the pedestrians.

A reward of up to $250,000 was announced by the BOLO Program as part of a new initiative targeting the Top 25 Most Wanted Fugitives in Canada and Lakrkamp was No.2 on that list.

(Incidentally, the No.1 on the list -- 32-year-old Abilaziz Mohamed, 32, who was wanted for first-degree murder in connection with a shooting in Toronto last October – was arrested on Tuesday itself, just hours after the BOLO program announcement, thanks to anonymous information to police about his location.)

The other alleged killer, Matthew Dupre, was arrested in Edmonton, Alberta, on February 20, and is being held in detention by the Alberta court, pending a decision on Thailand’s extradition request, according to information that had been released by the Royal Thai Police earlier this year.

The information on the wanted poster states: “In the early morning

of Saturday, February 5, 2022, the body of a man was found near a villa in Rawai Beach, Muang district of Phuket, Thailand. The man had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

“The victim was identified as 32-year-old Jimi Sandhu; an Indian citizen, and former Canadian resident. In Canada, Sandhu was known for his involvement with the “UN” Gang, one of the groups involved in a violent on-going conflict in the Lower Mainland area of British Columbia. He was deported back to India in 2016 for “serious criminality.”

“The Royal Thai Police investigation determined that Sandhu was deliberately targeted by two Canadian gunmen who flew back to Canada in the days following the murder.

“The Thai authorities requested the assistance of the Canadian authorities to locate and apprehend the 2 suspects. INTERPOL issued Red Notices for the suspects and arrest warrants were issued in Canada for both suspects. One of them was apprehended in Alberta in Febru-

ary 2022. The other accused is still actively evading arrest.”

It also warns: “Take no action to apprehend Lahrkamp yourself. He may be armed and dangerous.”

It adds: “Anyone offering Lahrkamp assistance in evading arrest may be considered an accessory after the fact and face charges.

“Section 240 of the Criminal Code of Canada states that “every one who is an accessory after the fact to murder is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for life.””

The reward up to $100,000 and is only available until October 26. The tipster will have one year from the date of arrest to claim the reward.

Lahrkamp’s last known address was in Trail, B.C. Investigators believe he may still be in British Columbia.

AS had been reported earlier this year in The VOICE, police sources had confirmed to this newspaper that Sandhu still had connections here in B.C. even after being deported from Canada in early 2016.

He had been suspected of killing Red Scorpions’ gang leader Matthew Campbell, 31, of Abbotsford in January 2014.

Sources said he was aligned with the UN Gang that is in conflict with the Brothers Keepers. This was expected to trigger some retaliation.

In 2018, Sandhu was jailed in India after India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted what it called an international drug syndicate that manufactured the date rape drug, ketamine, worth Rs. 250 million [$5 million] every month.

Apparently, when Sandhu was on bail, he left India.

Peel Regional Police Constable Manikosh Pathak awarded Ontario Medal of Bravery PEEL Regional Police constables Manikosh Pathak and Jason Beccario have been awarded the Ontario Medal of Bravery by Ontario Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell for their courage and poise under extreme pressure while apprehending an armed and dangerous individual.

“Every day, Peel Regional Police officers unfailingly accept the inherent dangers that can accompany patrolling our streets in order to keep our community safe.

What transpired one June evening in 2016 was an example of how quickly things can escalate and how the thorough training of our members prepared them to produce the best outcome of a highly unpredictable situation,” said a

On June 8, 2016, Beccario and Pathak responded to a 911 call of

a male and female fighting within the 21 Division area of Brampton.

The involved suspect was uncoop-

erative and resisted de-escalation efforts. He physically resisted and attempted to assault the officers.

While the officers were attempting to arrest the male, he pulled a firearm from his waistband and fired a round at close range at Beccario, less than 12 inches from his torso.

As Beccario and Pathak drew their firearms, the suspect fired several more shots at the officers. Despite multiple attempts to shoot and kill them, Pathak and Beccario displayed incredible courage and dedication in protecting the community by continuing to pursue the fleeing suspect while under fire as additional officers arrived on scene.

“Knowing the dangers presented to anyone who encountered this

suspect, our officers placed themselves at risk to ensure that this dangerous offender was apprehended. Ultimately, this suspect was arrested and later convicted of attempted murder. Our community is that much safer with a dangerous offender off our streets due to this incredible act of bravery by Constables Beccario and Pathak,” the police spokesperson noted.

“We congratulate and commend Constable Beccario and Constable Pathak as recipients of the Ontario Medal of Bravery and for their professionalism, confidence in their training, and ability to control a chaotic event to ensure no members of the public were harmed,” the spokesperson added.

Punjabi Language Education Association appeals to Surrey parents SURREY School District has sent notes to parents of six elementary and four high schools asking them to make a choice between Punjabi and French for the school year beginning in September 2022, says the Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA).

The elementary schools are Beaver Creek Elementary, Chimney Hill Elementary, Green

Timbers Elementary, Newton Elementary, Strawberry Hill Elementary and T.E. Scott Elementary.

one second language after English. In BC high schools the language requirement is optional from grades 9 to 12.

PLEA is urging parents of grade four students of the six elementary schools to choose Punjabi for their children and return the forms to their schools as soon as possible. For the four high school students, too, PLEA is urging them to sign up for the Punjabi classes as soon as possible.

PLEA says it strongly believes that getting children interested in their mother tongue Punjabi at an early age is extremely beneficial to them not only in their communication skills, but also in staying connected with their heritage.

Ridge Meadows RCMP calls in IHIT after man shot and killed RIDGE Meadows RCMP have called in the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) after a man was shot and killed.

On Thursday at approximately 2 p.m., police received several reports of shots fired in the area of the 21300-block of 124 Avenue.

Frontline officers arrived on scene to find an injured man suffering from gunshot wounds.

An off-duty Vancouver Police officer and an off-duty nurse were on scene attempting life-saving measures on the man, who, however, died on scene. The Ridge Meadows Serious Crime Unit (SCU) and Investigational Support Team (IST) are currently on

scene assisting with the investigation.

Cpl. Julie Klaussner said the investiagtion is in the early stages and at this time, it is unknown if this is related to the Lower Mainland Gang Conflict.

IHIT has now taken conduct of the investigation.

Investigators would like to speak to any witnesses who have not already spoken to police or if anyone has dash camera video or residential video surveillance. If you have information that could assist with the investigation, you are requested to contact the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-4448.

First new recruit class joins Surrey Police Service SURREY Police Service (SPS) has welcomed its first class of new recruits who will now begin their training to become constables with the SPS. This is an historic event as this is the first group of police officers who will start their policing careers with the SPS. On April 25, 14 recruit officers started their two-week onboarding course with the SPS, before they begin their training at the Justice Institute of BC (JIBC) Police Academy. Their training will include a total of 23 weeks of training at the JIBC, and 21 weeks of field training at the SPS. In March 2023, the recruits will graduate as “Certified Municipal Constables” and join the significant contingent of SPS experienced officers.

The SPS’s first class of new recruits is comprised of 11 males and three females, with an average age of 26.5. Nine of the recruits identify as being from a diverse community, and six speak a second language. All of these individuals have extensive volunteer backgrounds, and work experiences

a former intelligence officer with the Canadian Navy, police victim services workers, a

national medalist in wrestling, and a shelter coordinator in Whalley.

“Surrey Police Service’s first class of new recruits were chosen from over 500 applicants. Each of these outstanding individuals display the integrity, compassion and care for the community that SPS stands for as we build a modern, responsive and community-focused police service,” noted SPS Chief Constable Norm Lipinski. “I wish them much success in their training and look forward to their future contributions to SPS and the citizens of Surrey.”

In 2022, the SPS has been allotted 27 spots at the JIBC Police Academy. Fourteen will join the May 2022 JIBC class, and an additional 13 will be a part of the September 2022 class.

Darshana: A glimpse into Hindu civilization

THE Hindu community of B.C. last Sunday organized a cultural awareness event to highlight various aspects of the Hindu civilization -- from ancient Indian math and education to yoga and divinity – at Surrey’s Bear Creek Elementary School. Sunder Rajan gave a presentation on “India - An Ancient Civilization in a Modern World.”

More than 300 visitors, both Hindus and non-Hindus, registered to participate in the three-hour-long vibrant and fun event. Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, Labour Minister Harry Bains, MP John Aldag, Surrey councillors Allison Patton, Brenda Locke and Linda Annis, former minister Dr. Gulzar Cheema and RCMP Staff-Sgt. Jag Saran were among those

who were present.

Besides an informative and attractive exhibition, there were dance performances that showcased India’s rich, diverse cultures: Kuchipudi of Andhra Pradesh, Ghoomer of Rajasthan, Bhangra and Gidhha of Punjab and Bharatanatyam of ancient India.

Hindu leader Parshotam Goel of HSS said,

“We had an overwhelming response from the community beyond our expectations.”

He added that this event gave them the confidence to hold a series of such exhibitions in different cities of BC to create awareness and meaningful participation.

I have also been approached to consider running for mayor of White Rock and I am meeting with my family this week to see whether or not there’s some type of agreement on that.”

He added: “So, it’s somewhat up in the air – all of it’s up in the air right now.”

BACK in 2017, Hogg was selected as the federal Liberal candidate in a by-election in South Surrey—White Rock when incumbent Conservative MP Dianne Watts — who founded Surrey First in 2007 — resigned. Hogg defeated Conservative candidate Kerry-Lynne Findlay, but lost to her in the 2019 federal election. He lost to her again in 2021.

In an interview with The VOICE in 2017, he pointed out that he was on White Rock Council first as a Councillor for 10 years and then as the mayor for another 10 years.

He then became an MLA from the riding of Surrey-White Rock in a 1997 by-election. He was re-elected in 2001, 2005, 2009, and again in 2013.

He held several portfolios as MLA including Minister of Children and Family Development, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth Sport to the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Entrepreneurship to the Minister of Finance, Minister of State for Mining, and Minister of State for ActNow BC. Hogg also served as chair of the Government Caucus.

Hogg was a counsellor, probation officer and regional director for corrections prior to his election to the Legislative Assembly. He received his bachelor of arts in sociology and psychology from the University of British Columbia and his master’s degree in psychology from Antioch College.

Gordon Hogg and his wife, LaVerne, live in White Rock and have one son. They have also been foster parents, Hogg told The VOICE at the time.

India in 2015 and were sponsored through private applications spearheaded by the Manmeet Singh Bhullar Foundation with support from the World Sikh Organization of Canada, community groups and individuals carrying on the legacy of former Alberta MLA and cabinet minister Manmeet Singh Bhullar. The WSO has assisted with arranging sponsors as well as in the settlement of the refugees in Canada.

“This initiative began following an attack in July 2018 when the entire leadership of the Sikh and Hindu communities was killed in a suicide bombing and Daesh took responsibility for the attack,” says Balpreet Singh, WSO. “This was followed by yet another devastating Daesh suicide attack on Guru Har Sahib Gurdwara in Kabul, where 25 Sikhs were killed, including four-year-old Tania Kaur.”

Since then, the community has been the target of bomb attacks, kidnappings, and repeated storming of the remaining active gurdwara in Kabul. Less than 200 Afghan Sikhs and Hindus remain in Afghanistan.

“When our family arrived in Canada, we knew we were finally safe and that my children could finally go to school, my wife

could work and we no longer needed to fear for our lives because of our religion,” says Shamsher Singh. “We are truly grateful for the work being done by Manmeet Singh Bhullar Foundation and the WSO. Manmeet Singh Bhullar was the youngest member to be elected to Alberta’s 27th legislature and the first turbaned Sikh cabinet minister in Canada. He championed this cause prior to his tragic passing in November 2015, arranging for the evacuation of Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan’s Helmand province in early 2015 after they became the target of intolerance and attacks.

Tragically, Bhullar passed away while attempting to help a stranded motorist during a trip to Edmonton, Alberta.

Sikhs and Hindu refugees who left Afghanistan after 2015, particularly those who fled after the suicide attack on Kabul’s Karte Parwan Gurdwara in March 2020 and those that fled after the Taliban seizure of Kabul in 2021, continue to wait for Canada to create a pathway for their sponsorship. Since 2015, the WSO has repeatedly called for the creation of an expedited pathway for approximately 1,000 Sikh and Hindu Afghan refugees to come to Canada.

Surrey Teachers’ Association celebrates legacy of first Black STA president, Lloyd Edwards THE Surrey Teachers’ Association will be hosting a celebratory event on Saturday, April 30 to mark the changing of the name of their office building from Park Place Building to the Lloyd Edwards Building.

The event will take place from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at

STA President Jatinder Bir said, “As the first South Asian president of the Surrey Teachers’ Association, I am quite excited about having this opportunity to honour and celebrate Lloyd

Edwards in this way partly because I immigrated to Canada the same year that Lloyd was elected president and also because I now have the responsibility to continue the work of racial justice, a cause he worked so passionately on.”

Edwards recently turned

90 years old and has been a witness to many changes in public education over the past nine decades. BC Teachers’ Federation president Teri Mooring will be speaking at the event about a series of projects undertaken by the BCTF that grew out of Edwards’ demand for anti-racism action at the 1975 BCTF AGM.

Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act recommends transition to new BC provincial police service THE Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act has recommended “transition to a new BC provincial police service that is governed by the new Community Safety and Policing Act.” This would include, among other things, ” establishing a governance model, such as municipal or regional police boards or committees, that is representative of the community and provides opportunities for local input on policing and public safety priorities,” “ensuring municipal council representation on municipal police boards or committees, while not allowing the mayor to serve as board chair,” and “amalgamating police services on a regional basis where there are opportunities to address fragmentation, ensure equitable access to policing and public

In response to the report that was released on Thursday, Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, said in a statement: “The recommendations from the Special Committee on

Reforming the Police Act echo our government’s belief that everyone deserves equal treatment by the police.

“This has not always been the case for many Indigenous, Black and other people of colour. Public trust requires that the delivery of police services is fair, equitable and responsive to all British Columbians.

“The committee’s recommendations to reform B.C.’s Police Act are based on extensive analysis and input and reflect today’s challenges, including addressing systemic racism, mental health, and harm reduction. We will review the report’s findings on the roles and responsibilities of police, the effectiveness and efficiencies of policing practices, the level of public trust, and how to deliver exceptional services

to all British Columbians while being understanding and responsive to the needs of Indigenous, Black and other racialized communities.

“We have already begun reaching out to partners to discuss how we will review the report’s recommendations and, starting in late summer, we will be discussing the recommendations with Indigenous partners, community advocacy organizations, health and mental-health groups, police leadership, agencies and police oversight bodies in order to meet the new vision for the Police Act as envisioned by the committee.

“I applaud the dedication and hard work of the all-party special committee over nearly two years. I am also grateful to the 411 people, organizations and subject-matter experts who spoke before the committee or

made submissions. Their expertise, commitment and lived experiences were invaluable.

“As stated in Section 3.11 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act Action Plan, our government has committed to developing and implementing policing reforms to address systemic biases and racism.

“Policing is the subject of attention across Canada, and there are numerous national conversations occurring about policing reform. We are dedicated to creating a safer, more inclusive B.C., and the report and its recommendations will help us achieve our goal of eliminating inequity and advancing enduring reconciliation.”

Body located after fire at Surrey homeless camp SURREY RCMP are investigating after a deceased person was located in the remains of a fire on Monday morning.

On April 25, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Sur-

rey RCMP received a report that Surrey Fire Service located a deceased person after extinguishing a fire at a homeless camp in the 8800-block of 120 Street. Frontline officers

attended and secured the scene for further investigation.

Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit is working closely with BC Coroners Service and Surrey Fire Service in the investigation. The deceased person has not yet been

identified.

Surrey launches Illegal Construction Enforcement Team (ICET) THE City of Surrey announced on Wednesday that it has launched a new Illegal Construction Enforcement Team (ICET) to crack down on unpermitted residential construction in Surrey.

The move follows a recent update to City bylaws doubling fines (from $500 to $1,000) which now can be issued daily for each infraction, including construction without a permit, ignoring a stop work order, preventing an in-

spection, and occupancy without a permit.

“Illegal construction threatens the safety and wellbeing of occupants, site workers and surrounding neighbourhoods,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum. “In fact, illegal unpermitted construction is six times more likely to result in serious safety issues such as injury or death and can also cause dangerous environmental issues. Illegal construction is just not worth the risk to yourself, your investment, or occu-

pants.”

In addition to charges and injunctions resulting in court action that could lead to fines up to $50,000 per offence, property owners are subject to deconstruction and removal costs of unauthorized structures. Unpermitted construction could also jeopardize the future sale of the home and insurance companies may refuse to pay for claims resulting from problems associated with work that was per-

formed illegally without proper inspections.

In 2021, Bylaw received 617 complaints relating to construction activities and the city issued over 600 stop work orders.

Anonymous complaints will not be accepted.

Surrey’s Guaranteed Permitting Timelines initiative accelerating processing of building permitting THE latest data collected shows significant process on the City of Surrey’s Guaranteed Permitting Timelines. To minimize the wait time between applying and receiving a building or rezoning permit, Surrey City Council approved Guaranteed Permitting Timelines in October of 2021.

“The goal of this program is to ensure build-

ing permits are expedited in a timely manner,” said Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum.

“Not knowing when a building permit will be issued has long been a point of frustration for builders. Council’s implementation of a guaranteed timeline will result in less idle time for builders and more accurate completion dates for people looking to move into

their new home or business space. The latest data shows that we are not only meeting our goals, but we are exceeding our targets in several areas. I would like thank staff for their quick work on this important initiative.”

The latest data shows in four of five categories processing times have met or exceeded targeted timelines.

A number of initiatives have been implemented to accelerate Guaranteed Permitting Timelines, which include increasing staffing resources, expanding the online digital permitting portal, and the introduction of an expanded hours pilot program that extends the opening hours of City Hall to 8 p.m. one day per week.

Student assaulted and seriously injured at New Westminster Secondary School ON Wednesday the New Westminster Police Department responded to the 800-block of 6th Street for a report of a student who had been assaulted with a blunt force weapon in front of New Westminster Secondary School.

Patrol members located a 16-year-old victim receiving medical treatment by school staff.

The youth was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of his injuries which included a significant laceration to his head, and suspected concussion and a broken arm.

Investigators have now arrested an 18-yearold male suspect and are working with the victim and witnesses to determine what lead

to the assault. Investigators are also seeking additional witnesses, CCTV and dash camera footage from anyone who was in the area of New Westminster Secondary School between12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27. At this time, it is believed that the assault was not random and the victim and suspect are known to each other.

Approximately 30 minutes prior to the assault, members of the NWPD Gang Suppression Unit located two groups of males in the 700-block of 6th Street who appeared to be preparing for a physical altercation. GSU members intervened and during the process seized a baton and a replica handgun.

Police believe this is related to the assault.

Vancouver Mayor says his call for Police Act review has resulted in historic suite of reforms VANCOUVER Mayor Kennedy Stewart praised Thursday’s report from the Province’s Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act and urged the Government of B.C. to move quickly in adopting its recommendations.

“Everybody deserves to feel safe. That is why in June of 2020 I called upon the Province to conduct a comprehensive review of policing to address concerns around systemic racism, mental health, and community accountability,” said Stewart. “Today, the Committee issued a bold series of recommendations that do just that and they must be implemented without delay.”

Richmond debit card scam: Fake taxi, fake driver, fake passenger RICHMOND RCMP are warning the public of a debit card scam involving a fake taxi, a fake driver, and a fake passenger.

Since April 22, there have been four reports of a young man approaching people in busy parking areas, asking them to help pay for his taxi because he does not have enough money. Upon agreeing to help, the victim is told by the taxi driver that he does not take cash due to COVID-19, nor does he accept credit cards.

The unsuspecting victim then provides the driver with a debit card to pay for the transaction electronically. The driver then claims the tap function on his electronic payment machine does not work. He then takes the victim’s card, pretends to make a transaction, has the victim put in their PIN number, and gives a bogus card back to the victim. The unsuspecting victim later finds several fraudulent transactions on their debit card, most involving several hundreds of dollars.

Cpl. Ian Henderson says: “This scam appears to be a new one for the City of Richmond, but already we have had seven victims report the matter to police in the past few days. Our frontline and Economic Crime Unit investigators are working diligently to identify and locate the suspects. Meantime, we believe there is a need to warn the public of this fraudulent activity.”

The fake taxi is described as a white Toyota Camry with a white taxi sign on top.

The fake taxi driver is described as a Fijian or South Asian man in his early 20s.

The fake passenger is described as a Middle Eastern man also in his early 20s.

One man dead following exchange of fire with Vancouver Police AN East Vancouver man has died following an exchange of gunfire with Vancouver Police on

Wednesday night.

The VPD responded just after 8:30 p.m. to reports

of an alleged assault inside an apartment building near Commercial Drive and East 5th Avenue.

When patrol officers arrived, there was an interaction that resulted in an exchange of gunfire,

police said.

The suspect, a man in his 40s, subsequently died.

One police officer was injured and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Washington (IANS): US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken has said the US is considering taking “action” against countries that are not enforcing its Ukrainerelated sanctions against Russia but, he added, it will take a more indulgent approach towards those among them that are “rethinking” their relationship with Moscow, sometimes going back over decades.

Blinken on Thursday did not specify what shape or form that action would take but there have been suggestions of secondary sanctions. He also did not name any countries in either category.

India’s ties with Russia, especially its refusal to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and continued imports of Russian oil and gas have been raised by US officials along with, in one case of egregious overreach, a threat of “consequences”. More generally, the US has said it does not want to see India jack up its import of Russian energy beyond past levels because of discounted prices on offer.

“It’s much better, in the first instance, if we can get any countries in question to voluntarily make sure that they’re joining us in implementing the sanctions and not allowing them to be evaded,” the Secretary of State said at a hearing in the House of Representatives in response to a question about countries that are either “hedging their bets” on Ukraine-related sanctions or are allowing them to be evaded.

But the US is also “looking at” using authorities that it has to “take action against those that are not” enforcing the sanctions.

Blinken went on to say that a number of countries “are rethinking

Antony Blinken their relationships, including their relationship with Russia going forward, and some of them had relationships with Russia going back decades, including at times when we couldn’t have the same kind of relationship with them and now we can.

With these countries, he added, the US needs to “make sure that we are helping advance that transition and doing it in a way that, as a strategic matter, moves things in the right direction”.

The Secretary of State did not name any country but he may have been referring here to India, which has had a long relationship with Russia going back decades to the time of the Soviet Union. There were times then that Moscow was on India’s side when the US wasn’t, including, most significantly in 1971, when America was, in fact, on the opposite side.

At a hearing at the US Senate on Tuesday, Blinken had faced similar questions about countries not enforcing the US’s Ukraine-related sanctions. One senator, Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat, had suggested

that the administration should consider secondary sanctions to force these countries to fall in line.

“We made the right decision by saying that the United States is not going to continue to import Russian gas and oil but if that oil is (in the) international market, and Putin is able to sell it to somebody else, that obviously doesn’t do us any good at all,” Van Hollen said to Secretary Blinken at the hearing.

He added: “So I guess my question is very blunt: why aren’t we applying secondary sanctions against countries that are increasing their imports of Russian commodities?”

Hollen mentioned only China’s continued and increased purchase of Russian gas and oil, but a number of European countries -- such as Germany and others -- and India have been on the radar of American officials and lawmakers, even though India’s import of Russian energy is minuscule compared to its total energy imports.

Secretary Blinken had dismissed the suggestion outright.

“Where we can, it is far preferable to get countries to voluntarily not engage in these practices,” he said.

The Senator pressed him again: “There are countries that are taking advantage of discounted Russian oil prices and they’re able to unload it at lower prices, and they’re taking advantage of it, which only helps Putin.”

Other Senators also pressed the Secretary of State on this point although they did not go as far as to suggest they be punished with something like secondary sanctions.

Most of these countries are long-time allies of the US such as Germany and other NATO countries and others are partners like India.

AMAZON’S Prime Video launched a movie rental service in India on Thursday, promising to release more than forty original series and movies over the next two years in a key market.

The world’s second-most populous nation with a population of nearly 1.4 billion, India is a valuable market for Amazon and its rivals Netflix and Walt Disney Co’s Disney+ Hotstar.

“We are super excited about the launch,” Gaurav Gandhi, head of Amazon Prime Video India said at a function, adding that the service would widen customers’ reach and choice. It enables them to pay per movie, instead of a flat monthly fee.

The move comes five years after the U.S. tech giant launched its streaming service in India, and the company said it planned to more than double its investment in Prime Video over the next five years, but did not give figures.

Ex-US envoy to Islamabad admits hiding travel gift from Pakistani-American businessman New York (IANS): Richard Olson, a former US ambassador to Islamabad, has admitted before a federal court that he is guilty of not properly disclosing a travel gift he had received from a Pakistani-American businessman and of lobbying illegally.

In a document filed with the federal court in Los Angeles on April 7, Olson said “I wish to plead guilty to offences charged” by the Justice Department that he did not disclose the gift received in the form of travel worth about $18,000 as required by law.

He was also charged with lobbying for Qatar in violation of rules against such activities within a year of leaving office.

The Department said in its court filing that Olson had also received a payment of at least $20,000 soon after his retirement from government in 2016 through a company he had set up.

A career diplomat, Olson was the US Ambassador to Pakistan from 2012 to 2015 and the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan from 2015 to 2016.

In the US legal system, an accused person can plead guilty -- admit to the charges -- and be automatically convicted.

The Justice Department said Olson had received air travel to London, lodging there and expenses from the Pakistani-American businessman, whose name was not disclosed in court papers but identified only as a “natu-

ralised US citizen born in Pakistan”, who operated several businesses and lobbied, and was the go-between for another deal.

The Department said Olson aided Qatar to “influence decisions” of US officials, including those in the National Security Council, within a year of retiring as the special representative.

The Department’s court filings threw spotlight on how legal political contributions work in the US. It said that the Pakistani-American was “retained by foreign governments and individuals” and “received funds from foreign clients, used those funds to make political campaign contributions to US politicians, parlayed those contributions into political influence in the US and lobbied with US officials on behalf of his foreign clients”.

The Department said in court filings that Olson set up a company, Medicine Bear International Consulting, through which at least one payment of $20,000 was routed to him after the Pakistani-American had “agreed to retain” his services for $20,000 per month plus expenses.

worth $300,000, according to the Department.

Court papers did not identify the Bahraini businessperson or say if the contract was signed or what it would have entailed.

The Department said that the Pakistani-American’s company received $5.8 million from a Qatar official and it involved lobbying the US government to set up pre-clearance facility at the Doha airport for passengers travelling to the US. Olson, it said, advised the Pakistani-American and another businessperson on how to “sell” idea to US officials.

Another former US Ambassador, Robin Raphel, had also run into problems with the Justice Department but was ultimately not charged with any wrongdoing.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation had raided her home in 2014 while investigating if she had provided secret information to the Pakistani government.

The State Department had put her on administrative leave and suspended her security clearance while the investigation was taking place.

The Justice Department ultimately informed her that she was not suspected of espionage and closed the investigation in 2016.

New Delhi (IANS): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday that Pakistan has no locus standi to comment on the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

The MEA’s response came after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had termed Modi’s recent visit to Jammu as “staged”.

“I do not understand the word ‘staged’ that Shehbaz Sharif used. Everyone knows about the changes in J&K. It means they are trying to present a view that the visit did not take place. Pakistan has no locus standi on Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan commenting on this matter is wrong,” MEA spokesperson Arndam Bagchi said.

He also said that Prime Minister Modi received a warm welcome in J&K on April 24 and therefore Pakistan’s statement on his visit was absolutely inappropriate.

Giving details, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said that the surviving rate of terrorists is drastically decreasing due to enhanced human and technical intelligence and focused operations.

In the current year, 62 terrorists have been neutralised in different encounters so far, of which 32 were killed within just three months of joining terror ranks.

Among the 62 slain terrorists, 39 were linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, 15 to Jaish-e-Mohammed, six to Hizbul Mujahideen while two were connetected to Al-Badr. Of them, 47 were local terrorists while 15 were foreign recruits.

The IGP also reiterated his appeal to all misguided youth who have joined terror ranks to shun the path of terrorism and return to the mainstream.

He also appealed to the parents and elders of these terrorists to plead with them to shun the path of violence.

1984 riots: Ex-Congress leader Sajjan Kumar gets bail in murder case New Delhi (IANS): A Special CBI court here has granted bail to former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, in connection with the killing of a father and son duo by a violent mob allegedly led by him during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

However, the former lawmaker will remain in jail as he was convicted in another riots case in 2018 and currently undergoing life imprisonment.

In the 29-page order, Judge M.K. Nagapal said the bail application filed by Sajjan Kumar is allowed. He is admitted to bail in this case on furnishing of a personal bond in the sum of Rs 1,00,000 with two sureties of the like amount to the satisfaction of this court, read the order dated April 27.

On December 7, the same court had announced charges against Kumar in the case.

dacoity under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in connection with the double murder.

As per the case, Jaswant Singh and his son Tarun Deep Singh, residents of Raj Nagar in west Delhi killed by an unruly mob consisting of several thousand persons allegedly led by Sajjan Kumar during the anti-Sikh riots that took place in Delhi and various other parts of the country following the murder of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

During the hearing, his counsel argued that the accused is aged around 76 years and is suffering from various age-related ailments and in August, 2021, he had even remained hospitalised in Safdarjung Hospital for around 21 days. It is argued that he is a former member of Parliament and was elected as such thrice with huge margins and he is also a permanent resident of

Delhi, having deep roots in society and he commands great respect, love and affection.

On the other hand, the prosecution highlighted grounds of gravity of alleged offences and severity of punishment prescribed therefor; reasonable apprehensions of extension of threats or influencing of witnesses by the accused and tampering of evidence by him being an influential person.

After the detailed hearing, the court allowed him bail on certain conditions including surrendering of passport and not leaving the country without prior permission of the court. It was also directed that he shall not threaten or influence the witnesses of this case and shall not even make an attempt to do so in any manner whatsoever and he shall not tamper with the evidence of this case and shall not even make an attempt to do so.

Google begins work on Hyderabad campus, largest outside its headquarters Hyderabad (IANS): Internet giant Google on Thursday began work here on its largest campus outside of its headquarters in the US. The 3 million square feet building is coming up at Gachibowli, the information technology cluster. The company also unveiled the design of the campus coming up at the 7.3-acre site it acquired in 2019.

Telangana’s Information Technology Minister K.T. Rama Rao said he was super excited to break the ground for Google’s largest campus outside of their headquarters at Mountain View, US. The building prioritises sustainability and energy efficiency throughout its design. Upon commissioning, it will offer a highly skilled tech workforce a healthy, collaborative workplace that is both resilient and adaptable, designed to serve the city for years to come, Google said.

“I am pleased that Google is deepening its roots in Hyderabad through this landmark building which incorporates sustainability into its design, keeping in mind Hyderabad’s large and futurefocused talent pool,” said Rama

The campus was originally planned as a 2 million square facility with an investment of Rs 1,000 crore. An agreement was signed between the Telangana government and Google in 2015 when Rama Rao had visited the company headquarters in California.

Google currently operates out of a leased facility in Kondapur in Hyderabad and employs about 7,000 people. The new campus, which was earlier expected to be ready in 2019, is likely to nearly double the headcount.

Meanwhile, Google on Thursday signed an MoU with the Telangana government to support and accelerate its vision of leveraging technology for sustainable economic development and inclusive social development.

Under this new initiative, Google will collaborate with the government through its various arms to extend scholarships for Google Career Certificates to Telangana’s youth, support women entrepreneurs through digital, business and financial skills training, and strengthen the government’s

school modernisation efforts with digital teaching and learning tools and solutions.

As part of the joint effort, Google will also support the Telangana government’s efforts to improve public transportation and use of digital technologies in agriculture.

KTR, as the minister is popularly called, noted that Google has been working with the Telangana government since 2017, using its solutions to support “our vision of a Digital Telangana and furthering our mutual aim of making every citizen digitally empowered”.

“Our previous MoUs with them have resulted in some great initiatives that have positively affected citizens from all walks of life. This time we are focusing on making a step-change in communities such as youth, women, and students and in citizen services,” he said.

Curfew after massive clash between Shiv Sena, pro-Khalistan activists in Patiala

Chandigarh (IANS): Curfew was clamped in Punjab’s Patiala’s town on Friday after police had to fire into the air following a massive clash between members of the Shiv Sena led by Harish Singla and pro-Khalistan sword-bearing sympathizers outside the Kali Mata temple, who were pelting stones at each other and brandishing swords, police said.

Inspector General of Police, Patiala Range, Rakesh Aggarwal told the media the situation was under control and heavy police forces deployed. “The tension started following rumours that some of the protesters had been attacked,” he said.

Eyewitnesses told the police that Nihangs, who gathered in front of the Dukh Niwaran Sahib gurdwara to oppose the Khalistan ‘Murdabad March’ of the Shiv Sena, marched towards the temple, raising proKhalistan slogans.

A police officer got injuries while

trying to stop the Nihangs heading towards the temple, the police said.

Terming the incident of clashes as highly deplorable and extremely unfortunate that needs to be condemned by one and all in the strictest possible words, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann appealed to the people to maintain law and order

at all costs besides upholding the long traditional love, peace, brotherhood, and harmony.

Expressing anguish, he called upon the people to extend fulsome support and cooperation to the police and civil authorities by exercising restraint in this hour of crisis.

He categorically said no one would be allowed to disturb the hard-

earned peace and communal harmony in the state.

“The incident of clashes in Patiala is deeply unfortunate. I spoke with the DGP [Director General of Police], peace has been restored in the area. We are closely monitoring the situation and will not let anyone create disturbance in the State. Punjab’s peace and harmony is of utmost importance,” Mann tweeted.

Reiterating his government’s firm commitment, he said: “Nothing should be done to disturb the peaceful atmosphere as we are all morally committed to make Punjab the most peaceful, harmonious and prosperous state in the country.”

As a preventive measure, a curfew has been imposed till Saturday morning.

Singla, the executive president of the Shiv Sena, led the anti-separatist march from Arya Samaj Chowk to Kali Devi Temple. They were chanting slogans against Khalistan.

“The Shiv Sena will never allow Khalistan to be formed in Punjab or anywhere in India,” said Singla.

He also said banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannu had given the call to mark the foundation day of Khalistan on April 29.

Responding to the clash, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi advised the AAP government that peace and harmony are most imperative in a sensitive border state. “Punjab is not the place to carry out experiments.”

Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said: “Concerned about the tense situation arising due to clashes between two groups in Patiala.

People of Patiala are peace loving and I appeal to them not to get provoked. Hope that Punjab Police will take firm action and ensure that law and order is maintained.”

BJP leader Harjeet Singh Grewal said action should be taken against both sides.

Mann sold off interests of Punjab to Delhi, says Sukhbir Badal

Chandigarh (IANS): Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Badal on Tuesday said Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sold off the state’s interests to Delhi “in the garb of a knowledge-sharing agreement” and now AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal has become the de facto Chief Minister of Punjab too.

Terming the development as a black day in the history of Punjab, Badal said never before in the history of the state had outsiders been given control of the state and its future generations in this manner.

“A municipality President has been given charge of Chief Ministership of Punjab. Punjab has become subservient to Delhi which is not even a state,” said Badal.

Asking Mann to explain why he had betrayed Punjab and its people by surrendering its autonomy to Delhi, Badal alleged that he had hurt the pride of Punjabis.

He said: “The agreement makes it clear that all ministers and officers of Punjab will now

Asserting the “agreement” could have dangerous repercussions, Badal said: “We apprehend that a situation could arise whereby Kejriwal could force the Punjab Chief Minister to sign away the state’s river waters to Haryana and Delhi in the same manner in which Congress Chief Minister Darbara Singh was coerced into doing so by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.”

He said the situation had already taken a turn for the worst. “Punjab ministers are now even finding it difficult to defend their state with the Food and Civil Supplies Minister offering only ‘no comments’ when asked to spell out Punjab’s stand on the SYL canal,” he said.

Asking Mann not to act like a rubber stamp and cancel the agreement if he had any Punjabi pride, Badal said the Chief Minister should

know that Kejriwal had his eyes on the Chief Minister’s chair of Punjab from the very beginning.

“Immediately after the AAP government was sworn in, Kejriwal started summoning the state Chief Secretary and police chief to Delhi and even deciding on transfers and postings.

When this attracted criticism, a conspiracy was hatched to institutionalise the arrangement by bringing in the knowledge-sharing agreement, which is nothing but a document designed to hand over the administrative control of Punjab to the Delhi government,” said Badal.

Referring to the press briefing in Delhi where the purported agreement between the two states was signed, Badal said the Punjab Chief Minister said he wanted to learn and take benefit of the ‘Delhi Model’ whereas Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had gone on record as having said Delhi copied the Meritorious School model of Punjab which was put in place by former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Akali Dal files complaint over attempts to take over office in Delhi Chandigarh (IANS): The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday filed a complaint with Delhi Police alleging that a few leaders who had deserted the party are trying to take illegal possession of its office in the Gurdwara Rakabganj complex in the national capital and demanded due action be taken against them as per the law.

A senior delegation of the party, including Balwinder Singh Bhundur, Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, met the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New

Delhi, in this regard.

The delegation submitted that the law enforcement agencies take due action to ensure the working of the SAD office is not disrupted in any manner whatsoever.

Simultaneously, SAD initiated Akhand Paath at the office premises to express solidarity with Sikh prisoners and pray for their early release.

The community is awaiting the release of Sikh prisoners who have served more than their life sentence in jail and have not been

released even after the same was approved by the Centre in 2019 on the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. SAD Delhi President Paramjit Singh Sarna, who served as the President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee earlier, also paid his obeisance on the occasion and extended his support to the cause of the release of Sikh prisoners.

Meanwhile, talking to the media in Delhi, Daljit Singh Cheema and Virsa Singh Valtoha said the Sikh community is dismayed that the

Sikh prisoners, including Balwant Singh Rajoana and Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, have not been released on the occasion of the 400th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur which was commemorated by the Centre recently.

“The entire Sikh community was hopeful that the Sikh prisoners would be released on this occasion. Now we hope the same will happen by April 30 by which time the Supreme Court has directed the Centre to take a decision on the mercy petition of Balwant Singh Rajoana,” they said.

Brushing aside the criticism by the Opposition, he categorically said this is not onesided agreement but both the states would be mutually benefited from it.

Mann said that the Opposition was unnecessarily making a lot of hue and cry just for the sake of hollow criticism devoid of any tangible base.

The Chief Minister said Punjab would eventually benefit from the health and education model of Delhi, while the people of national capital would too benefit from Punjab’s vast experience and expertise in the field of agriculture.

The CX-9 is a bit of an enigma; build quality, interior fit and finish are way above its class – nudging into Lexus and Audi territory.

You will find real wood inlays, rich quilted leather- piped seats, weighted switch gear, and real aluminum accents for defining touches. Not much is new of this model year, however All-wheel drive becomes standard across the range. There are no significant changes for the 2022 Model year.

Power for all trims comes from the SkyactivG 2.5 Turbo engine making 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine’s mated to Mazda’s 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive. The entry-level GS model ($40,950) comes standard with Mazda’s i-Activsense safety features, heated front seats, Apple CarPlay and Android compatibility, 18-inch dark grey metallic finish aluminum alloy wheels and other creature comforts. An upscale GS-L version is also available with leather seating, The CX-9 GT, with a host of extra comfort and safety features costs $49,950. On the road, the CX-9; s 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine’s horsepower and torque vary depending on which octane fuel you use. With regular gas, the turbo-four makes 227 horsepower and

27 310 pound-feet of torque. Premium 93-95 gasoline ups those figures to 250 and 320, respectively.

This turbocharged engine has good pickup and acceleration and offers a decent amount of power when needed. The CX9’s six-speed transmission is glitch free and operates well with the turbo four - cylinder.

In terms of ride and handling – no surprises here. Stable, composed cornering is a given, with the precise pin-sharp steering and G-Vectoring control. The ride is generally comfortable too, although the CX-9 begs to be driven more sportily.

The CX-9 towing capacity has a max towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, a way down than others in its class. However, fuel economy is impressive, rated at city/highway: 11.6/9.0L/100 km. To sum up, very little negatives for the CX-9. The third row is tight on space as is overall cargo space, but that’s about it. Note, the CX-9 also rates highly for crash safety in US Safety tests arrives with plenty of standard active safety features.

The 2022 Mazda CX-9 lands near the top of the midsize SUV class thanks in part to its dynamic performance and handling, along with its opulent, luxurious cabin and excellent gas mileage. A winner all the way and comes highly recommended.

Federal Budget 2022: Taxation of Property Flipping, GST and Assignment Sales #548

The proposed federal budget for 2022 has introduced a number of new rules relating to real estate, including new rules to dampen speculation in the Canadian real estate market (for a full list of the housing affordability measures announced, click here).

REALTORS® should be generally aware of these changes and where they may affect a client’s transaction, and accounting advice should generally be recommended prior to a binding contract being entered into. For Sellers, this advice often should occur at the time of listing unless a Seller’s subject conditions are going to be included in the contract of purchase and sale.

Residential Property Flipping Rule A commonly held belief was that one had to hold a property for more than a year to obtain many of the tax benefits of the principal residence exemption. This requirement will now be codified into the Income Tax Act, and “property (a taxpayer has) held for fewer than 12 months (will) be subject to full taxation on profits as business income, applying to residential properties sold on or after January 1, 2023.”

There are certain “life event” exemptions proposed once effective (2023); however, Sellers who have held title to the property for a period of less than 12 months should be generally advised to obtain tax advice prior to listing.

Buying or Selling...

Remember that the date the title was initially transferred into the name of the Seller can be found on a Title Search next to the heading “Application Received” and this date may be very different than the date the contract was entered into--especially where the property was purchased as a pre-sale development.

GST on Residential Assignment Sales GST will be now applicable on all assignment sales of new (or substantially renovated) housing (where GST is applicable to the Purchase Price). In the past, an Assignor may have argued that they did not have to pay GST on the Assignment Amount since they may have intended to reside in the property as their principal residence. This deeming provision now prevents the taxpayer from taking that position and makes GST payable by the Assignor on any Assignment Amount.

Section 5.18 of the BCREA Assignment of Contract of Purchase and Sale New Development standard form states that “The Assignment Amount is inclusive of any GST payable with respect to the Assignment Agreement and the Assignor shall remit any GST payable.”

Importantly this means that the Assignor will be required to pay GST on the Assignment Amount (commonly called the lift).

A little nostalgia goes a long way

TRACING the medical history of nostalgia involves a sharp U-turn. Centuries ago, it was considered a psychopathological disorder. Still today, nostalgia can be associated with negative feelings and sadness. But researchers are reaching new conclusions about the health benefits of wistful affection for the past.

We recently witnessed the medicinal effects firsthand on a special family trip. A full seventy years later, we returned to the majestic Manoir Richelieu, a historic hotel northeast of Quebec City on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. As the former hotel doctor-in-residence, and the accompanying story-seeking family, we were treated to a wonderful walk down memory lane.

It was hard not to notice the spring in our steps, the smiles, and the upbeat mood.

Nostalgia comes from the Greek root “nostos” meaning “home” and “algos” meaning “pain”. Distinct from “homesickness”, which strikes when far from home and justifiably induces sadness, loneliness, and other depressing feelings, nostalgia can swing either way. One can be sad to recall “the good ole days”, or nostalgia can stimulate reward pathways in our brains.

Many studies have demonstrated the way memories make us feel good.

A study published in Psychological Science found that nostalgia boosts perceptions of social support and that highly resilient people use nostalgia as a tool to beat back loneliness.

Another study published in the journal Appetite examined how nostalgia influences attitudes about food. Experiments showed that people consumed more and reported more favorable attitudes towards healthy food when feeling nostalgic. Nostalgia also diminished the consumption of unhealthy

food.

Another interesting study linked nostalgia to creativity. Two groups of students were invited to write for five minutes. One group was instructed to think about an ordinary experience while the other was asked to think about something nostalgic. The latter group produced far more creative writing.

Organizational effectiveness gurus took note. A report in the Harvard Business Review recommended employers use nostalgia to make workers feel socially supported, energized, and confident, noting how this leads to more workplace creativity.

But watch the pocketbook, because other research points to the effect of nostalgia as a trigger for charitable giving, built on an abundance of empathy that comes along with happy personal associations.

Count on Shakespeare to have a take. He wrote in Othello, “To mourn a mischief that is past and gone is the next way to draw new mischief on.”

Dr. Constantine Sedikides, Professor of Social and Personality Psychology at the University of Southampton in the U.K., has spent his career studying nostalgia. He would agree with Shakespeare’s recommendation to move on to new mischief.

Dr. Sedikides says he has adopted strategies for increasing nostalgia in his own life.

“I don’t miss an opportunity to build nostalgic-to-be memories,” he says. “We call this anticipatory nostalgia.”

Our recent visit to the Manoir Richelieu helped our family connect with the past and share experience across generations.

But you don’t have to travel to achieve the same benefit.

Try taking ten minutes to reflect on a special place or time. Look back into your past and recall an occasion when you achieved a goal, when you first met a special friend, or even something recent that you enjoyed. Then, having immersed yourself in the memory, check to see how you feel.

You should notice a sense of happiness.

Another technique is to meander through the pages of an old photo album.
