Especially when you enjoy the long summer days wearing amazing new clothes sewn from our wide assortment of natural fibers.
Let the sunshine in! We mean Desert Sunshine, a bright yellow, medium-weight cotton herringbone with a little added stretch. This fabric is perfect for sewing constructed garments, like slacks, shorts, skirts, princess-seamed dresses, and light summer jackets. Whip up some sunny walking shorts to wear with a blouse sewn from Desert Vibrance. The swirling blend of colors reminds us of an Impressionist painting on a soft and flowing rayon challis. We chose Desert Flax for you to create some loose, drawcord pants like Friday’s Saguaro Set, the Lisboa Shorts by Liesl + Co, or a lined skirt to wear with any of the woven prints in this collection. It’s also a perfect weight for a linen shirt or shell.

This is a catalog full of hope. People are working hard to heal the world and reverse the problems arising from the last hundred years. The industrial revolution did no favors for our mothers - Mother Nature and Mother Earth, that is. Factories spew chemicals into the air, depleting the ozone layer. Agricultural practices of small, biodiverse fields, rotated yearly, with hedgerows between, have been replaced by large swaths of monoculture - a single plant being sown and harvested year after year - killing the soil microbiome and eliminating food and shelter for the bugs and birds. The Earth has been suffering from the ill effects of humankind, but now there are millions of people around the globe working to fix the problems. Inspirational, monumental efforts are underway to reverse desertification across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and even the United States. Once fertile lands have died, turning to barren deserts due to poor land management, harmful agricultural practices, and overgrazing by livestock, this is called desertification. The United Nations has called upon governments to take charge and combat the issue. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are also hard at work, engaging strategies specifically geared to each location’s climate and situation. In this issue, we will focus on a few noteworthy reverse desertification efforts that are already having a positive impact and could help mitigate or reverse the erosive impacts of climate change.

For our knit lovers, we found this extra-wide rayon jersey with a dynamic, stylized floral print. Wrap yourself in a Desert Bold surplice dress or create a ruched top to WOW your friends this summer. If you sew a cap sleeve, you can cut the front and back from one length of fabric, making this a great value.
Protect yourself from chilly nights or blasting air conditioning by wearing a simple water repellent jacket or cardi from Desert Citrine by Polartec. This is also extra wide, so you don’t have to order as much as you would for a 60-inch wide fabric. There is slightly more lengthwise stretch, allowing you the option of laying your pattern out along the grain or across it.
From designer Andria Lieu comes Desert Chic, a textured double-knit in orchid and black, that has more stretch running lengthwise than crosswise. Cut your patterns out using less fabric by laying your pattern pieces out across the fabric, from selvage to selgave, rather than lengthwise as shown on your pattern envelopes.

Gobi Collection
Along the southern edge of China’s Gobi Desert is an area affectionately called “The Green Wall of China.” Grid patterns of straw are half-buried in the sand, creating a patchwork barrier to stabilize the shifting grains. These straw grids also act as a substrate into which trees and grasses are planted. The Three-North Shelterbelt Project will span 2800 miles and has already become home to 66 billion new trees acting as a natural windbreak. This national effort began in 1978 and is scheduled to continue until 2050. Three-North refers to the north, northwest, and northeast parts of China, the main focus of the Green Wall program. This holistic approach converts dying farmland back into forests, protects existing forests, and develops wildlife reserves. As tree-planting continues in other regions, equal emphasis has been placed on planting grasses instead of trees along the Yellow River. Trees use a lot of water and are depleting the Yellow River, which farmers need, while grasses use much less water and have the same greening effect. This combination of the tree-lined windbreak along the Green Wall, tree-planting in other regions, and native grasses planted along the river are all helping mitigate the effects of desertification in the north.

Feel the lightweight, soft drape of Gobi Dijon French terry knit. Imagine wearing this as a light pullover, a waterfall-front cardi, or a summer sweater set. It’s delicious! And it pairs perfectly with the Dijon accents in Gobi Blooms, a lightly slubbed rayon. The digital floral print is offset enough that you don’t have to worry about using a nap layout when cutting your pattern. OK, you’ve sewn your Dijon cardi, your rayon print top, now what? Say hello to Gobi Classic, a taupe cotton seersucker that perfectly matches the taupe floral accents. Choose this iconic weave for sewing summer slacks, shorts, shirts, and sundresses.
Just in case you need a summer jacket and dress combo to wear to a wedding or fundraiser, we’ve got you covered with Gobi Piqué. Enjoy the rich texture in classic ivory, made from durable, washable, wrinkle-resistant polyester.

When the staff was flipping through the fabric collections, this trio elicited many oohs and aaahs. Sahel Clay cotton sateen features a dull sheen on the face, similar to a polished cotton. We love this fabric for structured dresses, jackets, and pants. It’s a fabulous companion to Sahel Motif rayon challis print, where one has body and structure, the other is soft and fluid. Make Capris and a bell-sleeved tunic, or shorts with a shell. For a more Bohemian look, pair the challis with Sahel Sand, the second of our rayon blend linen-looks in this issue. Craft a flowing skirt and peasant blouse, a broomstick skirt with a cap sleeve top, or a sundress and overblouse. The sandy neutral tone works well with the other two prints in this collection.

Sahel Collection
Many African countries have joined the greening movement. The “Great Green Wall” spans the Sahel region of the African Continent from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, covering parts of Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and Chad. This semiarid region acts as a buffer between the Sahara Desert in the north and the humid savannahs of the south. Their situation is very different from China’s, and their current solutions are successfully meeting the needs of the people. Much of the year is sunny and dry, and then the monsoons strike. The dry, barren earth cannot absorb the massive amounts of rain, which causes mudslides and flash flooding. Agricultural engineers have developed a system to capture the monsoonal rains in thousands of mini ponds. Large semi-circles are dug out, and the removed dirt is mounded into a berm to raise the height of the curved side. This acts as a backstop to help capture rainwater, prevent mudslides and floods, and give the land time to slowly absorb the water. These shapes, Zaï (Burkina Faso) and Tassa (Niger), are then filled with manure or compost. Thousands of these, many of them several meters wide, are repeated in an offset or staggered effect, like scales on a fish. They are oriented so that the rainwater flows into the mini ponds, filling them. Trees and shrubs planted around the edges prevent soil erosion and cast shade to slow evaporation and give the soil organic matter to retain the moisture. Over the years, migrating animals have returned to these once barren areas. They drink from the ponds, and they trample the grasses and plants, which helps spread seeds and push plant matter into the soil, adding much-needed organic content to aid absorption and water retention. Migrating birds have dropped millions of seeds, expanding the plant life in the region, which then feeds the people. Everything works in harmony.

How to Care For Your Fabrics
The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.
One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.
Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.
Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Cutting Line Designs #52317 “Puting it Together”- ensemble
In the United States, not only are the desert areas expanding, but the lush lands of the midwestern prairies are dying. Our post-Industrial Revolution agricultural practices are killing the farmlands. Conventional farming involves planting the same single crop year after year in the same spot, called monoculture. Imagine if you only ate plain pasta every day, and nothing else. Your body would be depleted of vital nutrients it would otherwise receive from fruits, veggies, proteins, etc. You might take a multivitamin to counteract some of the ill effects, just as commercial farmers use chemical fertilizers. Weak plants are more susceptible to pest infestation, so pesticides are deployed. Before planting, farmers till the ground to loosen the soil, and the blades of the machines kill worms and other important organisms by chopping and disrupting the land. Over time, once healthy, vibrant soil loses its life and turns to inert dirt. Our farmlands are dying. The solution is regenerative farming, which involves polyculture, crop rotation, cover crops, and various other strategies to help put life back into the soil. Polyculture, the planting of several different crops side-by-side that work in harmony, is widely practiced by smaller farmers who sell at farmers’ markets, produce stands, and directly to local restaurants and grocers. They work mostly by hand or use smaller tools less disruptive to the soil. The centuries-old practice of crop rotation involves moving crops from one plot of land to another each year in a way that keeps the soil from becoming depleted of any one nutrient. It also reduces pest issues by replacing the foods pests want to eat. Regenerative farmers plant one crop in the spring to harvest in the summer, replace it with a completely different crop in the summer to harvest in the fall, then put in a cover crop over the winter. Cover crops are planted in otherwise unused areas to prevent soil erosion, uplift nutrients from subsoil through deep tap roots, and replenish minerals and nutrients. Cover crops are usually chopped down and left in place, like a blanket, eventually composting into that area, becoming food for the soil. The adage goes, “Feed the soil, not the plants.”
Whether you pair this print with the navy crepe knit or our pink herringbone, you will definitely enjoy wearing it around town. Choose Plains Savannah when your pattern calls for a light to medium weight stable knit. Did you see it’s 66” wide? One yard of this cotton-rich beauty will be enough for cutting out most patterns.
Plains Candy is such a sweet choice for sewing summer separates. The cotton-rich stretch herringbone is lightweight yet durable enough for tailoring Capris, a button-front dress, and overalls like Closet Core’s Fiona Sundress and Jenny Overalls, and a summer jacket like Friday’s Heather Blazer.

Wilding Collection
Wilding: The Return of Nature to a British Farm by Isabella Tree (I’m not making that up) hit the UK bookshelves in 2018. She gives an account of the Knepp Wildland rewilding project, which followed the dying farmland at her husband’s ancestral home in Sussex as it was turned over to nature, with a little jumpstart. The “...land began to return to wood pasture with the growth of scrub.” They brought in deer, cattle, and pigs that eat different plants. Birds, bats, and bugs that had become scarce returned to the land. The British government offers subsidies to farmers who allow part of their land to go wild. For a funny look into the process, check out the “Wilding” episode of Clarkson’s Farm on Prime Video. Wilding refers to the act of restoring biodiversity by creating a wilder area. Dig a pond, damn a stream, broadcast native wildflower seeds, thin some woodland of advantageous weed trees allowing more sunlight to reach the forest floor. All these efforts result in attracting wildlife back to the area - animals, bugs, and birds. According to the Rewilding Academy, an Action Partner of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), “Rewilding offers a powerful solution to biodiversity loss and the climate crisis, bringing hope for a healthier, more resilient planet.” How does rewilding an area help combat the climate crisis? Think about it this way: What feeds more critters, gives shelter, and converts more Carbon Dioxide into Oxygen - an acre of grassy lawn or an acre of trees and flower meadows with a pond? Rewilding increases carbon storage, reduces climate change impacts, and enhances ecosystem resilience. If each homeowner replaces a section of their lawn with wildflowers, shrubs, and a tree or two, we will make huge steps in healing the earth. Vogue Fabrics has transformed a portion of the staff parking lot into a staff vegetable and flower garden, and we continue to add new, native plantings to our front landscape.

Cool Collection
The Earth’s ozone layer is recovering. The hole over the Antarctic is getting smaller, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says it could “fully recover” by 2066, because of the worldwide efforts being made. The ozone layer protects us from the sun’s harmful UV radiation. As we became more industrialized in the 1900s, chemicals rose into the atmosphere, essentially eroding portions of the ozone. Asphalt roads are great for getting quickly from one place to another, but asphalt temperatures can be up to 50° higher compared to the adjacent tree-lined dirt roads. Skyscrapers contribute to the “urban heat island,” absorbing and retaining more solar heat than surrounding areas, raising temperatures in those areas by up to 22°F. They also contribute to higher energy consumption, resulting in increased carbon emissions. The daily energy use of tall buildings for heating, cooling, and lighting generates significantly more total emissions than lower-rise buildings with the same number of inhabitants. The creation of skyscrapers began in the era of gearless traction elevators, plus improvements in indoor plumbing and urban sewage systems in the early 1900s. One hundred years is a blip in time over the course of world history, and so much humancreated damage has been done. Now, many newer buildings are incorporating green spaces strategically onto roofs, terraces, walkways, and balconies, which convert carbon emissions into oxygen, thus cleaning the air. If you live in a building, rally your neighbors to create a rooftop garden, grow plants on balconies, or place & hang plants inside by the windows to shade the interior. Everyone can make a difference. We see the world is beginning to heal, and a lot of the extraordinary positive movement comes from small efforts by average people in addition to the environmental protections observed by large corporations and imposed by governments. Happy sewing - and sowing - everyone!
