ARTISTIC VISION STATEMENT Thank you for spending time with us as we Welcome Christmas together. It is an honor and a great gift that we can sing together as we continue our journey through the month of December. There are so many narratives that shape the way we experience the Christmas season year after year. No matter whether you bake cookies or decorate the house at the same time each year, or host holiday gatherings, visit with loved ones, or spend more time in church watching pageants and singing carols, Christmas gives us a short period of time to see the world from a different perspective—one of kindness, hospitality, and gratitude for those whom we hold most near and dear to our own hearts. While the story of the Christ Child’s humble birth in a manger is the focal point of the season, I have always been in awe of his mother, Mary, and her amazing grace in the midst of the most unlikely of circumstances. I, for one, cannot begin to imagine the hardships that she faced, and yet, Mary had the ability to see outside of herself to proclaim one of the most poignant expressions of gratitude and calls for justice in her Magnificat (Song of Mary). This year’s Welcome Christmas program gives us all an opportunity to experience the wonder of the Christmas season from perspectives different than our own as we juxtapose Mary’s song with reflections from Twin Cities area mothers who will share their own expressions of the everlasting hope, deep love, exuberant joy, and abiding peace they have for their children. I am pleased that for our reflections on Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace, we have another chance to amplify the courage, strength, and wisdom of the young mothers from the Longfellow School for Pregnant and Parenting Teens. Longfellow is a community of students, staff, families, and county and community partners working collaboratively to promote generational self-sufficiency among pregnant and parenting teens. Longfellow and VocalEssence have partnered together multiple times as part of the Carnegie Hall Lullaby Project. Musically, we look to enrich your experience with a wide array of unfamiliar and new works from composers of African and Latin American descent. My wish is that as you return home, you are inspired to learn more about H. Leslie Adams, B.E. Boykin, César Alejandro Carrillo, Nathaniel Dett, Julio Morales, Rosephanye Powell, Zanaida Robles, and Samuel Coleridge Taylor. We programmed these works alongside familiar carols to make room for us to consider how we can expand our holiday playlists to connect across difference and play our part in working for Umoja—unity—in the beloved community. —G. Phillip Shoultz, III, Associate Artistic Director

LOVE CAME DOWN Jennifer Higdon

KERESIMESI QDUN DE O (CHRISTMAS HAS COME) Nigerian Christmas song, arr. Wendall Whalum

Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love Divine; Love was born at Christmas, Star and angels gave the sign.

Love shall be our token, Love shall be yours and Love be mine, Love to God and all men, Love for plea and gift and sign. —Christina Rossetti

Sung in Yoruba Christmas has come, Alleluia, Season of song, season of joy, Born in a manger, Jesus our Savior. He came to save His children from sin. The son of Mary, He died for us, The son of Joseph, He died for us, Came down from heaven to save us from evil. —Nigerian Christmas song

Audience Sing: PEOPLE, LOOK EAST Traditional French carol, arr. Barry Rose

CHRISTMAS ANGEL Corlynn Hanney

People look east. The time is near of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table. People, look east, and sing today—Love, the Guest, is on the way. Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim, one more light the bowl shall brim, Shining beyond the frosty weather, bright as sun and moon together. People look east and sing today—Love, the Star, is on the way. —Eleanor Farjeon

Oh, how I wish I could sing like an angel, I’d sing carols so high and sweet. Oh, if I had the voice of an angel, I’d be singin’ that sweet child asleep. Oh, how I wish I had the wings of an angel, Shining with glory bright. Oh, if I had the wings of an angel, I’d be rockin’ that sweet child at night.

Worship we the Godhead, Love Incarnate, Love Divine; Worship we our Jesus: But wherewith for sacred sign?

O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM (O GREAT MYSTERY) César Alejandro Carrillo Sung in Latin O great mystery and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord lying in a manger! O blessed is the Virgin, whose womb was worthy to bear Christ the Lord. MAGNIFICAT IN F MAJOR Samuel Coleridge-Taylor My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For He hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me Blessed. For He that is mighty hath magnified me: and Holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear Him: throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent empty away. He remembering His mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, forever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. —text from the Book of Common Prayer, 1662 Page 10

CHRISTMAS LULLABY H. Leslie Adams Sleep, baby, sleep. Mary and Joseph watch as you slumber. Rest your weary head on your tiny bed. Angels guard you, shepherds surround you; Rest your weary head. Wise men travel from afar, bringing gifts led by a star, Journey to the manger low to find the Child the whole world will know. Hallelujah! Praises to the newborn King! So, sleep, baby sleep. Little Lord Jesus, sleep as we pray and sing this lullaby. —H. Leslie Adams PECES EN EL RÍO (THE FISH IN THE RIVER) arr. Robert Elhai Sung in Spanish The Virgin Mary combs her precious hair as she gives thanks for her baby. Even she cannot understand why God chose her to be a mother.

SING, MY CHILD Sarah Quartel Sing for the promise in each new morning. Sing for the hope in a new day dawning. All around is beauty bright! Wake in the morning and sing, my child. Dance in the joy of the day unfolding. Dance as you work and dance as you’re learning. All around is beauty bright! Take in the day and dance, my child. But when troubles come and worry is all that can be found, Gather your strength and hear your voice. Sing, my child. Laugh in the cool and the fresh of the evening. Laugh in your triumph, laugh in succeeding. All around is beauty bright! Rest in the evening and laugh, my child. Peace in the stillness and dark of the night. Peace in the dreams of your silent delights. All around is beauty bright! Sleep in the night and peace, my child. —Sarah Quartel

CHORUS: But fishes in the river, they are so delighted. The fishes in the river, to see the birth of God. See how they swim and swim and swim some more. The fishes in the river, to see the Savior born. The Virgin Mary washes swaddling clothes and hangs them on the rose bush While birds of the air sing in praise and the roses begin blooming. — Mexican villancico, translated by Gerhard Erichsen NOCHE DE PAZ, STILLE NACHT, SILENT NIGHT Franz Gruber & Joseph Mohr, arr. Julio Morales & Robert Elhai Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright. Round yon Virgin Mother and Child.
