ARTIST STATEMENT / DECLARACIÓN DEL ARTISTA When you know that your plan is to perform a program of Minnesota composers and that you must limit yourself to 10 composers—that is a daunting task because there are hundreds of composers living in Minnesota and we must be thankful for this abundance of composing talent! So the task becomes: which 10? I know dozens and dozens of Minnesota composers and it was a delightful and challenging task to consider both well-known and emerging artists for the list. It was also important that the program encompass a variety of styles, tempi, texts, and sounds.

Several composers of renown immediately made the list: Dominick Argento, Libby Larsen, Stephen Paulus and, as we have a marvelous composer in the Ensemble Singers, I wanted to include him—Timothy Takach. Some of the composers have been heard on previous VocalEssence concerts and have become favorites with the Ensemble Singers: Carol Barnett, David Evan Thomas, and Steve Heitzeg; and it is a hallmark and tenet of VocalEssence to introduce new composers to a concert: Timothy Berry, Reinaldo Moya, and Shruthi Rajasekar.

As we move from composer to composer, I want to celebrate the rich legacy of Minnesota poetry and have included five who will each read a poem of their own creation: Michael Dennis Browne, Anthony Ceballos, Mary Moore Easter, Patricia Hampl, and Anna George Meek.

Minnesota is indeed a fertile land that nurtures poets and poetry. I also want to thank Minnesota’s First Lady, Gwen Walz, for lending her voice and words to our Call of the North.

I know you will be inspired by the music and the poetry and I hope you will take pride in the rich artistic legacy that we possess in our state.

We must never take it for granted; we must encourage, support, and perform the wonderful work that Minnesota artists offer us!

Cuando sabe que su plan es interpretar un programa conformado por compositores de Minnesota y que debe limitarse a 10 compositores—se trata de una tarea abrumadora porque hay cientos de compositores viviendo en Minnesota y debemos estar agradecidos por esta abundancia de talento. Y la tarea se vuelve: ¿cuáles 10? Conozco a docenas y docenas de compositores en Minnesota y fue una tarea encantadora y desafiante considerar para la lista a artistas tanto emergentes como reconocidos. ABOUT VOCALESSENCE / SOBRE VOCALESSENCE VocalEssence, called “one of the irreplaceable music ensembles of our time” by Dana Gioia, past chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts—and the choir that Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones says “sings magnificently”— impacts thousands of students, singers, and composers each year through its initiative programs, contests, and support for innovative art. PHILIP BRUNELLE Artistic Director and Founder / Director Artístico y Fundador Philip Brunelle, artistic director and founder of VocalEssence 52 years ago, is an internationally-renowned conductor, choral scholar, and visionary. Philip has conducted symphonies, choral festivals, and operas on six continents. He holds five honorary degrees, served 9 years as Vice President of IFCM (International Federation for Choral Music), and has been recognized for his commitment to choral music by the governments of Norway, Hungary, Sweden, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. In 2019, he was awarded the American Prize in Choral Conducting and, in 2020, was given the Honorary Member Award by the Society for American Music. In March 2020, he began a website series of “Musical Moments,” highlighting the music of composers who have been featured in VocalEssence concerts over these past 52 years. By the end of March, the list of composers has reached more than 200. MARY JO GOTHMANN Accompanist / Acompañante Mary Jo Gothmann joined VocalEssence as staff accompanist in 2015. She enjoys a varied career as a chamber musician, soloist, opera coach, and organist. Mary Jo performs frequently with the Minnesota Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and is a graduate of Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Program, University of Minnesota, New England Conservatory, and St. Olaf College.

Mary Jo is the founder and Artistic Director of the Joya Chamber Music Series at Zion Lutheran Church in Anoka.

Phillip Shoultz, III, the students present a wide range of music—from classical to hip-hop, with a focus on selections that represent the backgrounds and shared values of its membership. They perform in world-class venues, awaken their creativity through immersive arts experiences with teaching artists representing a variety of artistic disciplines, and belong to an accepting community of peers from all walks of life.
