Ben Coyle, Melbourne coffee shop owner, business coach and author of Spilling the Beans shares some insight on his experiences and things he wished he knew when he first went into business of running a cafe.

“Many people dream of owning a café one day. While it can be very rewarding, there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes. In fact, one-sixth of new cafés go out of business within the first three years, for reasons that could have been avoided”

Q) What are your busiest times of day?

A) In general most cafés experience a rush in the morning and over lunch due to people getting their morning coffee or taking meals. I have found that this can also be weather dependent; the first hot or cold changes in every season can affect how busy you may be. Having said that, in a society with such flexible hours, I find there is no rhyme or reason as to when you will get busy.

Q) What are your most popular drinks and snacks?

A) Coffee is by far the most popular choice, especially with the different brewing methods available, however tea is also becoming more popular. In my venue, a toasted focaccia is always popular, as is the soup of the day. But a fresh home baked muffin takes the cake (pardon the pun).

Q) What are the biggest challenges you face on a typical day? Is there such as thing as a typical day?

A) That is a good question. In my business every day is slightly different. Most café owners, other than possibly wanting more customers on any given day, find staffing an issue. Hospitality is known as a transient industry where staffing is concerned. This means a constant search for good people and never-ending training.

Q) What are some of the most unusual things you’ve overheard, or had to deal with?

A) Oh, that is a whole book right there. Probably my favourite story is when I found a man in my kitchen leaning over the sink, his face buried in a mango he brought in himself. He was surprised when I asked what he was doing and told him that he wasn’t allowed in the kitchen. He then proceeded to steal toilet paper after having washed the mango off his face. I don’t think he was the full cup of coffee, if you know what I mean.

Q) What is more important, great coffee or great service?

A) With the exception of a coffee cart or hole-in-the-wall coffee business, I’d say great service supersedes great coffee. No matter how good a coffee is, if you do not smile and make people feel better for having come to your café, they won’t remain customers for very long. A café should have both.

Q) Are there any things you wish you knew before setting up your business?

A) There are so many things that I wish I knew I wrote a book about it! Each lesson was valuable in its way and I would like to share three with you.

Firstly, I wish I knew more about the industry. It is not as simple as standing behind a counter taking money and making coffee. There is a lot more to be done when setting up, building and maintaining a café. There are lots of rules and regulations that must be adhered to. Doing more research would have helped me achieve success earlier.

Secondly, I wish I knew to trust my instincts. There are many people and suppliers who wanted my business and my money. Most are legitimate, but there are some unscrupulous and shrewd salespeople out there. Neither do they know or care how hard I work to make my business succeed. Remember the adage: If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Lastly, cafés are in the people business, so you are there to serve others, and it is all about the experience you provide. Sometimes you will provide a great experience with little appreciation, as some people can be rude without realising it. So I wish that I learnt earlier to be more humble, to understand people better, and to be aware that it isn’t personal. Business is a journey and as rewarding as it is, there are numerous challenges that require you to grow.

Your first priority should be building that relationship with people, not pitching your service or product. Give them story ideas and leads that have nothing to do with your business.

1. You are not Instagram. For every startup that sells and makes millions, there are hundreds — if not thousands — that fail or, even worse, continue to just barely make it, sucking the life out of you in the process.

This year I’ve already worked from places like Vail, Playa del Carmen, Cuba, New York, China and Jordan among others — all without skipping a beat in my business.

5. You’ll have more flexibility than Gabby Douglas. You say you wanted to become an entrepreneur for increased flexibility and control in your life? Fat chance in a startup, especially when you’re playing with someone else’s money. As a lifestyle entrepreneur, you truly have the flexibility to set your own schedule. Take Laura Roeder, for instance — she moved from Southern California to spend a few months in London, where she got to attend this year’s Olympic games. A lifestyle business is one that promotes the lifestyle you want to live. For many, that’s more time with friends and family; for others, it’s travel and adventure. You get to decide.

6. Stress is minimized. As an entrepreneur, stress will never go away — it comes with the territory. But you’d better believe that while starting up, it has the potential to be much worse. Thoughts like “How am I going to make payroll this month?” and “Revenues were 30 percent less than projections, what will the investors think?” or “My partners and I have drastically different opinions of where the business should go, what do I do?” are all common issues in a startup.

A lifestyle entrepreneur has no one to answer to but themselves, thus reducing the stress that comes with common business problems. Stress of getting started can be minimized even further by running your business from abroad, where it’s cheaper to live.

7. You can become a modern-day Renaissance person. I can’t focus on just one thing; I’m always all over the place. Being a solopreneur has forced me to learn how to handle all aspects of business — marketing, accounting, sales…you name it, I do it. In this position, you grow your expertise and become a more well-rounded business person, and that will undoubtedly help you in any future endeavors. The phrase “Jack of all trades, master of none” isn’t always a bad thing.

Are all startups bad? Of course not. Are all lifestyle businesses beaches and daiquiris? Not a chance. However, if you’re looking to maximize your enjoyment while have the freedom and security that comes with knowing you have full control of your life, then a lifestyle business may be exactly what you need.

SCOTT Morrison is betting on small business to drive the Australian economy — handing out $2.2 billion worth of tax cuts over four years on the understanding it would create jobs and spur ideas.

“Small and medium businesses are driving jobs growth in Australia and must continue to do so,” the Treasurer told parliament in May. “They are also overwhelmingly Australian owned and more likely to reinvest their earnings in future growth, as they seek to build their businesses,” he said.

The tax cuts kick in on July 1 — election eve.

They will mean handing $295 million of tax savings to small business in the first year. Smaller firms win a reduction in tax of 1 per cent while those turning over between $2 million and $10 million get a 2.5 per cent discount thanks to the Budget.

It means 870,000 small business will pay the cheapest company tax rate of 27.5 per cent from July 1. Compared to the previous year, another 90,000 businesses are eligible for the lowest rate thanks to the wider definition of small business.

The government estimates small business will save $2.2 billion in tax over four years.Small business will continue to pay 27.5 per cent tax until 2024, when lower tax rates for all business gradually kicks in, tracking down to 25 per cent by 2026-2027.Small Business Minister Kelly O’Dwyer said Treasury’s new definition of small business to a turnover of $10 million means those employing 5.5 million Australians now qualify for the small business tax cuts. “Small businesses are the ¬engine room of the economy,” Ms O’Dwyer said.

“These measures will help small businesses to innovate, grow and create more Australian jobs.”

And the $20,000 instant asset write-off for new equipment for small business has been extended for another year, to July 2017. Small business made claims under the asset write-off worth almost $800 million in the past financial year — almost double the previous year.

Companies eligible for the write-off for equipment purchases was also extended ¬beyond those with a $2 million turnover to include those earning up to $10 million.

“So far, more than 40,000 ¬additional businesses have ¬instantly written off assets in the 2014-15 year as compared to the year before,” Ms O’Dwyer said.

Sole traders also got a bonus set to save them $150 million in 2017-18, with an additional 3 per cent added to the tax discount for unincorporated firms.

The discount will be ¬extended from 5 per cent to 8 per cent next financial year and to 16 per cent over the decade.
