Dear VNHC Family and Friends, Nearly 110 years ago, Marian Watts and a group of dedicated women saw a need in our community and cared deeply enough to do something about it. They fundraised $895 and founded the Visiting Nurse Association of Santa Barbara. Today, we are Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care (VNHC), and each year we provide more than $2.4 million in charitable care and community benefit.

Sustaining our legacy of care for more than a century takes a team committed to our mission of providing compassionate and trusted care. VNHC has been fortunate to have just that team comprised of professional clinicians and caregivers, talented volunteers, and generous donors. With the recent disasters, the depth and diligence of care by our staff was evident and vitally important to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of our patients and clients.

As we celebrate our 110th anniversary of caring for the communities of Santa Barbara County, in this Heart-to-Heart, we share with you a few stories about the power of caring during crisis. How VNHC staff and our community are driven and dedicated to help in the midst of disaster.

How the power of caring about fulfilling a dying wish can bring peace to a family. How caring about a community helps each of us rebuild.

While the destruction that the fire and flood brought were unprecedented, the care, concern, and compassion that VNHC has for our community is a steadfast legacy. Whether a nurse, physician, caregiver, chaplain, social worker, therapist, volunteer, or administrator, I am so proud of our VNHC team who has upheld our tradition of caring.

en years ago, after a serious fall, Bradford Dillman, renowned Broadway star and award winning Hollywood actor, moved back home with his daughter, Pamela Dillman Haskell, and her family. As an officer and longtime member of the Board of Directors for Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care, Pamela knew that she would need help providing the personal home care her father needed; and that eventually her father would want home hospice care from VNHC just as they had arranged for Pamela’s stepmother, Suzy.

Bradford had expressed his wishes for when he faced end of life, but unforeseen natural disasters would make fulfilling his wishes more difficult.

On Friday, December 8, as the Thomas Fire was growing, though not yet threatening Santa Barbara County, Pamela and her daughter Frankie, headed south with 40 girls and their moms for a dance competition and convention in Los Angeles. quality from the smoke, but remembered, “Dad’s not going to be leaving the house,” and her husband, Chris, would be home with him. By Sunday, Montecito was put under mandatory evacuation. “That morning it was all over the news, and we were receiving text alerts to move quickly,” Pamela recalled. “We’ve got to get Dad out of the house. We’ve got to get Dad out of the house!”

Bradford was already fragile and in a sensitive state, so there was some concern that exposure to the air quality would weaken him even more, but continuing to stay at home in the path of the fire was clearly not an option.

Bradford was evacuated to his son’s Los Angeles home, where he stayed until the day before the evacuation order was lifted; then he fell ill. A minor heart attack and pneumonia resulted in an ambulance ride to the hospital.

“By the time I saw him in the hospital, the look in his eye was so fearful, afraid, and angry,” Pamela recalled.

“It was hard to interpret what he wanted and the doctors

were saying that it could go either way. As a family, we had a hard time interpreting the look in his eye.

Was it fear of death or desperation to go on his own terms and time?”

On January 3, thanks to the diligence of Dr. Chris Thrash and other physicians and staff at Cottage, Bradford was safely moved to the ICU at Cottage Hospital. Days later, the January 9 storm, flood, and debris flows closed the 101 freeway, which would have marooned Bradford and his family in Los Angeles, preventing him from coming home and being where he truly wanted to be. “And so if it hadn’t been that we had gotten him into Cottage before the mudslide he would not have been able to be up here at all,” Pamela shared. “So that was a tremendous blessing, it really was a gift.”

Once at Cottage Hospital and within 24 hours, Dr. Thrash sat Pamela down and further explained her father’s current status. “I want to remove the tube again because I have seen some improvement with his pneumonia,” Dr. Thrash said. “We are going to be facing a situation where once the tube is removed, if he does not progress further in betterment, you will have to make a decision about hospice or reinserting the tube; in which case he would need to be restrained to prevent him from removing the tube due to the confusion he is experiencing from the dementia.” Fortunately, the tube was removed, his pneumonia did not progress, and his condition stabilized, so Bradford was moved to a private room at Cottage Hospital.

Pamela shared that the nurses were so attentive.

“They would always ask him, ‘Do you want

anything?’ And my dad would reply in a soft voice ‘No,’ but then he would croak out, ‘Thank you very much.’ He was so polite and he was comfortable again. I just knew that we’d done the right thing by this time.”

One night, while Pamela slept in the chair next to her father’s hospital bed, she was jolted awake by a rustling in the bed and her father’s voice singing.

Bradford was most known for his roles in the original Broadway production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night and the movie Compulsion. He was on television and in more than 40 films including Francis of Assisi, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Sudden Impact and Lords of the Deep.

One of his favorite roles was as J.J. in The Way We Were and it was the theme song from this film that Pamela heard her father singing.

The family teetered between choosing to continue the extreme life support measures in the ICU or to remove them to allow for a natural passing. After ten days, the feeding tube was removed, Bradford’s condition improved, and the evacuation orders from the Thomas Fire were lifted. Pamela knew that she needed to get her dad home, but he was not strong enough to return home, so Cottage Hospital would be the next best thing. However, the challenges continued as there were no beds available at Cottage due to the flu epidemic, and Bradford’s condition again took a turn for the worse, sending him back to the Olympia Medical Center ICU in Los Angeles.

“Bradford Dillman sounded like a distinguished, phony theatrical name, so I kept it.”

She imagined that he was thinking, “Oh here I am at the end of my life and I’m already missing you all.”

At this time, the discussion of hospice became more imminent. Pamela knew returning home was her father’s ultimate wish, but Bradford’s status, as well as the road conditions in Montecito, made going home impossible. Pamela knew she could find another “home-away-from-home” at VNHC’s Serenity House on the Mesa. When a bed became available at Serenity House, Bradford was moved, and Pamela found solace in finally being able to tell the family where Dad would live out the rest of his days.

Knowing that there was finally one place they could all gather to be near Bradford, the family came from all over the country to Santa Barbara by planes, trains and cars. When they arrived at Serenity House, the peacefulness of the place affected them immediately.

The neutrality of Serenity House, being simply a home of tranquility, transported the family from any emotional distress to peacefulness.

At Serenity House, each family member could be with Bradford on their own time. They would take turns visiting one on one with their father, while the others gathered in the large family room to share stories and memories.

Serenity House is owned and operated by Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care. Nestled in the hills on the Mesa in Santa Barbara, the views from Serenity House overlook the mountains and ocean.

“For my siblings it was extraordinary to see, even the ones who were very resistant to the idea [of inpatient hospice care], how the peacefulness of the environment was such a blessing to them,” commented Pamela.

Although her father was comfortable yet really not responsive in terms of his ability to communicate, everyone knew that he could hear them based on his energy. Bradford received integrative therapy and music therapy, both of which warmed Bradford and his loved ones, especially when the music therapist played show tunes. “I couldn’t believe the fact that when I just casually mentioned, almost humorously, to the music therapists that my dad liked show tunes, that they could accommodate that,” Pamela said joyfully.

After 24 hours at Serenity House, Bradford Dillman took his last breath as his dignified self, handsome as ever, and surrounded by family.

Although bringing Bradford home for his last moments was unattainable, Serenity House was exactly what he and his family needed, before they even knew it. “[Serenity House] gave the gift to the family of a beautiful end that was unencumbered by the weight of both good and bad memories that the [family] house would hold.”

Even while facing end of life, Serenity House is a neutral space that allows family and friends to gather “at home” and share memories of the way they were.

Hospice care is a benefit under Medicare, Medi-Cal, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, and most private insurance. All VNHC hospice patients are eligible to request free music therapy.

During the Thomas Fire and January Mudslides, our communities faced many losses. Santa Barbara County is fortunate to have people who are passionately driven to do all they can to help our communities rebuild. Whether that is rescue and recovery, providing medical care and shelter, or fund-or friend-raising, people were and continue to be present in the moment of need.

Our community also needed the Loan Closet, and more so after the disasters when many people either forgot their medical equipment during the evacuation process or lost their equipment during the disasters. The challenge, like it was for most people, was that the fire and floods impacted our staff and their access to Santa Barbara through the 101 freeway.

At VNHC we knew our patients and clients needed us to continue their medical care and personal care, whether they were at home, waiting to be evacuated, or already evacuated to a temporary home at a hotel or shelter. Our patients still needed their nurse, physical therapist, or caregiver to sustain their care.

The Loan Closet team primarily includes Bob Krumm and Marisol Rodriquez; and three volunteers: Jan Everote, Loy Lytle, and Sean McGrath. Together they serve more than 4,000 people every year by providing free, short term loans of basic medical equipment such as canes,

Ventura Fairgrounds. “I was evacuated and I was still able to commute to work, but not being able to go home was kind of eerie. And then when I did go up the hill to see if my house was still standing, that was an even more eerie feeling. Nobody was there. The town was vacant.”

Despite the ongoing fire, Bob came to work in the Loan Closet as scheduled. “It was hard leaving your house and not knowing if it was going to be there when you get back. With the fire, I was still here [at the Loan Closet]. I wanted everything to be ready in case somebody needed something. What am I going to do about getting equipment to the public who may be losing their home, just like me?”

Bob found it difficult to consider that the Loan Closet may not be open and available for the community because he couldn’t drive into work. Bob was driven to ensure that despite the fire, the Loan Closet opened its doors each day, so that access to much needed basic medical equipment, to those who were just as vulnerable as he, was sustained.

Like many in the community, getting to work was hindered by both fire and flood; but for Bob, he was determined and driven to ensure that the Loan Closet would be open to serve.

Normally, it takes Bob over an hour each way to get to the Loan Closet. Bob lives in a small town nestled in the hills of Ojai. On Monday, December 4, the Thomas Fire burned into Ojai, and Bob was forced to stay home that day. But he knew that Marisol could manage the Loan Closet without him, if only for the day. By Wednesday, the fire grew significantly and Bob was forced to evacuate. He packed up his trusty 34-foot RV, Pursuit, and took shelter at the

Still unable to return home, the commute back to the Ventura Fairgrounds was not an easy one. “It was weird driving up here when the fire was going on. I saw fire, smoke, and flames from Ventura all the way to Summerland…” His beloved RV, more often used for camping trips, was now home, and the anxiety of not knowing if his house was still standing remained.

Bob’s passion and loyalty to the Loan Closet and its customers kept him coming back each day, regardless of the distraction and discomfort about his home.

Finally, after more than a week of being evacuated, Bob returned to his house and was ready for life to return to normal. But less than a month later on January 9, 2018, unprecedented torrential down pours brought debris flow into Montecito and onto the 101, closing the freeway. Like so many people, Bob’s only direct path into Santa Barbara became inaccessible.

The debris flow and 101 closure impacted so many businesses and organizations that had to temporarily close their doors; but for VNHC, closing was not an option. Like a hospital or medical clinic, VNHC vnhcsb.org | 9

is a provider of medical care to sustain the health and well-being of patients. The difference is that VNHC provides medical care in hundreds of buildings throughout the County, rather than a few buildings.

These hundreds of buildings are the homes of patients and clients, and during a disaster, sometimes home is at a hotel or evacuation shelter.

About 20% of VNHC’s staff live south of the impacted cities of Montecito, Summerland, and Carpinteria; and one them was Bob. Both VNHC leadership and Bob were passionate about keeping the Loan Closet open. He waited patiently for his marching orders and considered his options. Would he make the five-hour drive around the closure through route 166? Would Amtrak restore train services?

Would someone else run the Loan Closet? Finally on Friday, January 12, Bob was one of the lucky ones to get a ride on the train. During his long ride into Santa Barbara, Bob hoped the impact of the temporary three-day closure of the Loan Closet would be minimal.

VNHC leadership knew there had to be a more efficient solution to get staff through the 101 closure.

Thanks to the cooperation and support of the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management, and the California Highway Patrol, an escorted VNHC caravan was approved to come through the 101 closure. On Monday morning, two passenger 10 | vnhcsb.org

vans as well as Bob’s trusty RV, caravanned critical VNHC staff into Santa Barbara. Within less than two hours, Bob pulled his RV into the VNHC parking lot, where it would remain for the week.

For four nights and five days, Bob lived in his RV minimizing his commute time to less than a minute, ultimately ensuring that the Loan Closet was open to serve the community. “It started really slow the week of the flood. Everyone was in shock and moving slow. A couple of people came in and said they lost a few things and they wanted to replace equipment that had been left during the chaos.”

To ensure the community knew that the Loan Closet was available, information was shared at the Local Recovery and Assistance Center and at the Red Cross Evacuation Shelters. Soon the number of people coming into the Loan Closet each day nearly doubled, with many people borrowing equipment for the second time. Bob tried to make it as easy as possible for people, recognizing their hardship and wanting to do everything possible to make them comfortable. “Many of them were staying in hotels, and had left their equipment at home as they were being evacuated.”

Keeping the Loan Closet open, and living in his RV for the week, were not the only ways Bob was committed to helping. As the next work week approached and the 101 freeway continued to remain closed, Bob offered to drive one of the VNHC passenger vans. “I like helping people and this seemed like an easy way to help people get to work. Each day we would get up early, drive to pick up nurses and caregivers at the Ventura MetroLink, and drive them the remaining 20 miles into Santa Barbara escorted by the CHP.” Bob’s passion and compassion for his work in the Loan Closet is ever present. “I love being responsible for running it. I feel responsible for everything that happens.” Bob does it all for the people, and he strives to make all those who walk into the Loan Closet smile. Whether they’re fearful of an upcoming surgery, anticipating the loss of a loved one, or moving due to evacuation, each interaction is unique and Bob sees it as a chance to brighten each person’s day.

On one occasion, after Bob was bantering with a customer, as he usually does, he escorted her and carried her medical equipment to her car. The customer’s reaction surprised Bob, as she started to tear up and share her feelings.

The last three days, I’ve been crying in the hospital.

I’m losing my husband and my life is totally black, and I come down here to get some equipment, not knowing that I’m going to laugh, that I would enjoy myself. And I get away from that fear involved with losing my husband. Whatever you’re doing, don’t ever stop. Keep what you’re doing forever.

Over the past few months, the community has written letters, donated equipment, and contributed financially to VNHC and the Loan Closet, in appreciation for our efforts and attentiveness during fire and flood. For Bob, it is always about the people and giving them a moment of laughter, despite the burdens they may carry. Bob’s passion is driven by his humor and a genuine compassion for humanity.

The Loan Closet is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. To ensure adequate time for equipment education, the last time to pick up equipment is 4:00 PM. Enter the Loan Closet from the VNHC parking lot located off Olive Street between E. Montecito Street and E. Gutierrez Street.

The Loan Closet has been in operation since 1951 and is completely supported through private contributions, often from people who have benefited from this service.

Heroic Non-Stop Care Through the prolonged Thomas Fire, followed by the torrential rainstorm and devastating mudslide, Socorro Rosales, dedicated mother and nurse, gave everything she had in all aspects of her life. A super hero in the eyes of most, Socorro’s motivation stems from her love of working with others. Through the entire rainstorm and mudslide, Socorro and her family remained in Santa Barbara and lived at her parents’ house. They were displaced, sacrificing returning home to their own beds in Ventura, in order for Socorro to continue to provide care and treatment to those who needed her most, her patients.

Socorro will tell you that she is part of an amazing and heroic team, the VNHC Santa Barbara Home Health Department. The department is organized into three groups, and Socorro and her team are responsible for patients who live in Montecito, Summerland, and Carpinteria, the areas most impacted by the fire and flood. Socorro has been a nurse with VNHC for 18 12 | vnhcsb.org

of her 21-year career. She also works part time as an oncology nurse at Cottage Hospital.

When I work at the hospital, I usually try to work weekends, so it doesn’t interfere with my job here at the agency; but obviously there’s a day or two that I have to work eight hours at VNHC and then I work 12 hours at night [at the hospital].

[On those shifts] I’m off at 7:30 in the morning and then I’m able to go home and take a shower. I freshen up, and then I’m here [at VNHC] usually by about 8:30. I work another eight hours and then eventually I go home that evening. I try not to do that kind of schedule very often, because it is hard Socorro’s work at VNHC is managing the coordination and collaboration of rehabilitation clinicians, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, home health aides, and nurses. At the hospital, she utilizes her nursing skills at the bedside.

“I really enjoy patient care and the fact that when

I used to be a VNHC nurse in the field, I would take care of patients at the hospital and then I would take care of them at home,” Socorro shared. “There is something special about seeing and being part of the continuum of care and helping a patient recover.”

Socorro’s commitment and diligence in her personal life is just as strong as a mother, daughter, and wife; and some even call her “Wonder Woman.” On the morning of January 9, Socorro’s heroic efforts, personally and professionally, helped sustain care for her family, staff and patients. On that fateful morning, Socorro and her four children awoke to begin their day and make the routine commute into Santa Barbara from Oxnard. Both Socorro and her husband Armando work in Santa Barbara, and her children, ranging in age from 5 to 17, all attend private school in Santa Barbara as well.

Usually, each day starts with an early morning and a long car ride up the 101, but then Socorro’s VNHC work cell phone began to ring non-stop with text updates from the VNHC Emergency Team.

At 5:25 AM it was confirmed: mudslides had closed Highway 101.

Socorro considered alternative ways to get to Santa Barbara with no avail. But for a super hero mom and nurse like Socorro, there had to be another way to continue her service. Socorro pulled out her laptop to work remotely.

The entire VNHC team, wherever they were, began to call and triage patients. Was everyone safe? Had patients been evacuated? Were those with emergent medical needs being taken care of accordingly?

Socorro followed up with fellow nurses and team members who lived in the impacted area, many of whom were isolated and also unable to make it in to the office to see their patients.

Socorro also corresponded with all Spanish speaking patients, many of whom had no other communication in regards to the emergency and relied on her translation for evacuation and safety notices.

Many patients had evacuated to family’s homes or to assisted living facilities, all out of the impact areas. But there was one patient who lived in the red mandatory evacuation area, and Socorro and her team had trouble connecting with him as the phone lines were down. Since he was an elderly man who lived with his elderly sister, Socorro called in reinforcements.

On Thursday, January 11, after working remotely for two days, the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner was back up and running between Oxnard and Santa Barbara.

Without hesitation, Socorro and her family got tickets and waited patiently on the train platform; wondering if they would be able to actually get on the train.

Fortunately, they did get seats and they finally got to Santa Barbara, though two and a half hours later than expected. Upon arrival, Socorro checked on her parents, got her children to school, and then came to work at VNHC to triage nurses and patients. Due to the debris slide and the 101 closure, the entire Home Health management team worked around the clock to support their staff so they could continue care for patients.

Since Socorro planned ahead to stay with family in Santa Barbara, she was able to get to VNHC the next day, and even took extra shifts at the hospital to help out. Every bed in the hospital was full with people who had been injured in the debris flow, as well as hundreds of patients who were hospitalized by the flu epidemic.

With the reopening of the 101 undetermined, a creative and strategic plan was implemented to utilize clinicians who live in Carpinteria, and were subsequently marooned there to visit patients also stranded in Carpinteria. Despite the challenging crisis, the VNHC team knew that maintaining continuity of care for patients was vital.

Socorro recalled, “We had to call and update patients as the evacuation map was ever changing. People were leaving their homes, but still needed to be seen by our clinicians. The whole team was so on it!”

Working with VNHC Safety Officer Mara Sorkin and Public Information Officer Easter Moorman, the VNHC team contacted the patient’s emergency contact, and informed the County Public Health Department about a potential missing person. Finally, after countless phone calls, the patient’s nephew and emergency contact, responded that his uncle was safe and in good care. Socorro never gave up on any of her patients and staff, doing whatever was required to secure their safety and provide proper medical care.

During the extended closure of the 101, each day was more challenging than the last, but the whole VNHC team stuck it through, doing what they could to make sure all staff was safe and patients were receiving the care they needed. Patients with highnursing needs received visits, and those who required physical, occupational, or speech therapy, were seen in their place of short term residence, or waited until therapists could safely reach them at home.

Once VNHC obtained approval for a CHP escorted caravan through the Carpinteria-Montecito area, staffing issues resolved. Staff who could get to the offices were more than willing to work overtime, and they went above and beyond the call of duty.

In Chinese, the calligraphy character for music is the foundation for the character for medicine; and in many ancient civilizations, one of MUSIC MEDICINE music’s primary purposes is healing. At Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care, a focus for our patients is the healing of heart and spirit. Today, scientific research has confirmed music’s therapeutic ability to lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, enhance concentration, stabilize heart rate, and more.

The plan for VNHC’s 2018 PHORUM: Perspectives in Healthcare was to focus on Music Therapy utilized at end of life from the perspective of hospice care. However, this year our community was deeply impacted physically, emotionally, and spiritually by the tragic losses as a result of the Thomas Fire, the largest wild fire in California history, and the subsequent mudslides in Montecito that killed 21 people and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses. In response to our community’s urgent need for comfort and healing, VNHC chose to broaden the subject matter of Music Therapy to help our community deal with any kind of loss.

winner whose work as a music and health innovator has redefined the role music and sound can play in healthcare, education, and mindfulness programs.

Gary’s acclaimed palliative classic, “Graceful Passages,” (co-produced with Michael and Doris Stillwater) has touched nearly a million people worldwide.

Gary took the audience on a journey, showing how music has been there for us throughout our lives as the soundtrack of our existence. With anecdotes and powerful musical movie and TV moments, Gary shared the way many of us view mortality and how vibrations can help us contextualize emotions.

Gary illustrated this in the form of stories of personal and professional change, insight into the healing power of music, and a message of hope that Santa Barbara can come to terms with the reality that “we are not in control and can transform our loss into grace and gratitude.”

He combined his work as a “messenger of the power of the arts to [advance] health and wellness” to relate to not only our feelings at end of life, but also to the current state of the community in the twilight of disaster. Music is a form of self-care for the ill and healthy alike. “The only way we can really be in balance is if we’re here and now with what is… There are not many things, other than music, that can bring you here and now.”

At the closing, Gary presented his surprise guest, Jason Paras, a 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Carpinteria who wrote a song about the disasters and about the community’s response: “We Come Together.” As Jason sang and played guitar, Gary joined on the piano, and together their performance captured the spirit of the lyrics and how we as a community are: “...Making beauty from ashes. The whole world will ask us how we do what we do. When everything falls apart we come together.”

The power of music to heal and transform was the key takeaway for attendees. Music is the universal language that reaches deep within us to our soul and provides an outlet for reflection and expression of feelings, ultimately improving one’s quality of life. It moves us, it heals us, it frees us, it empowers us, and it connects every one of us. Therapeutic music is broad and diverse, providing to the listener exactly what it is that they need at that moment. For many patients and families alike, it serves as a connecting bridge, with no words needed.

Anderson Therapeutic music in healthcare, and specifically in hospice care, recognizes the impact of music for emotional and psychological well-being, and focuses on applying music to enhance the quality of life for patients and their families. Therapeutic music is not meant to be a substitute, but rather adjunct to medical care.

An important aspect of therapeutic music is meeting the patient where they are at that moment and addressing their needs: emotional, spiritual, and psychological, which complement their medical treatment. Therapeutic music can accompany other integrative services as well: prayer or blessing, Reiki, or massage. Music and sound are holistic approaches used since ancient times to bring comfort and peace to those who listen; it is a natural transition to bring harmony into the end of life process as well.

“Healing doesn’t happen in the fast lane,” and our community, as well as our patients, may all now be a little closer to the comfort and renewal we all seek, thanks to the strength and power of music.

World War I When an emergency call went out for nurses to serve, three of five VNA nurses took a leave from VNA to serve in the war effort.

After the Earthquake in Santa Barbara - 1925

On November 8, 1908 the Visiting Nurse Association of Santa Barbara was founded by Marian Watts for the good of the community and out of compassion for the less fortunate. Within the first month, 140 patient visits were made.

The influenza epidemic hit Santa Barbara with full force, overcrowding the hospitals. To support the community, VNA doubled its workload, conducting 2,000 more visits than it did during the same period the prior year. VNA also worked in the Red Cross canteen to cook and serve food because so many families had adults afflicted who were unable to tend to their family’s needs.

The 19-second, 6.3 magnitude earthquake caused $10 million in damage. There was no electricity, water, or phones, and sewer lines were compromised. With communications down, VNA could not wait for people to call for help, so VNA nurses went into the city and provided assistance where needed.

The VNA also took charge of the Red Cross Canteen #3 food service, and fed 400 people over five days.

During the Depression, VNA lived up to its goal to bring the services of trained nurses to families in need, regardless of their ability to pay. In addition to providing charitable medical care, VNA planted and maintained a garden to feed those in need. Furthermore, VNA nurses gave up vacation time and took a 5 to 10 percent reduction in salary.

WWII affected nearly every person, family, and community.

The demand for nurses by the armed services caused VNA to utilize more part-time nurses. In support of the War Emergency Committee, VNA strategically created a response committee and recruited 24 volunteers, inactive graduate nurses, who provided home nursing in case of disaster.

On December 4, the largest California wildfire started in Ventura County and within five days burned into Santa Barbara County, forcing 88,000 people to flee their homes. VNHC activated its Emergency Operations Plan and worked 24/7 to inform patients, clients, staff, volunteers, and Board members to keep them safe.

Despite 14 days of evacuation orders, VNHC continued to provide clinical care to its patients.

Within weeks of the Thomas Fire, disaster struck on January 9 with an unprecedented rainstorm that caused devastating mudslides in Montecito, closing the 101 Highway for two weeks. Once again, VNHC jumped into 24/7 crisis care mode and worked with the County for approval of a VNHC caravan to transport critical staff through the closure to ensure continuity of patient care.

110% DEDICATED Thanks to our First Responders and Offices of Emergency Management for Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care was able to work through the fire, flood and 101 closure to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of our patients, volunteers, donors, and staff. Another critical factor that helped VNHC during the disasters was communication and information from our local media.

During these disasters, the media provided ongoing updates and covered important community meetings.

They also recognized our First Responders and Emergency Personnel as heroes. There is one more group of heroes that should also be recognized‌our local media.

For nearly 110 years, VNHC has sustained its promise to be there when needed most and to provide compassionate and trusted care, even through natural disasters.

Since December of 2017, our community has faced the tragedies of fire, flood, debris slides, and the challenges of health and living impacts that come during and after natural disasters.

Throughout the ongoing crises, our local reporters, videographers, photographers, and production teams worked around the clock to keep us informed. They were, and continue to be, dedicated to providing accurate, timely information with storm watches, wind and flood advisories, and if necessary, potential evacuations. On March 14, 2018 at the 5th Annual PHORUM, VNHC presented the 110% Award to our local media for their dedication to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Cindy Capute, RN lives in Ventura and is a nurse on the VNHC Home Health team.

During the Thomas Fire, Hwy 101 was closed on Saturday, December 16. Cindy was supposed to work that day and be the evening on-call nurse. Determined to fulfill her responsibilities, Cindy showed her VNHC identification badge and her nursing license to the CHP. The officer told her “but it may not be safe there.” Cindy replied, “I know, but I have to be there for my patients.” So the officer permitted her to go through the barricade. Cindy started her shift early to make sure patients were seen and she was willing to work overtime if needed. In order to cover her shifts, Cindy stayed in Santa Barbara for two nights, and she slept in her car because she could not find a hotel.

Mary McGregor, OT is an Occupational therapist and during the fire, she first helped one of her Carpinteria patients evacuate to a hotel. When her patient could no longer stay in the hotel, Mary continued to care for her patient in the Evacuation Center. Mary would walk into the center and literally visit her patient at Bed 125. Occupational Therapy leverages a patient’s home routine to help them recover. With the patient temporarily displaced, Mary had to adjust, in order to continue patient care. This was an amazing demonstration of her commitment to ensuring the continued well-being of her patient. vnhcsb.org | 21

In support of this initiative, Lynda Tanner, VNHC President & CEO has joined the Visiting Nurse Associations of America (VNAA) Board of Directors. The VNAA is a 501(c) (3) organization that supports, promotes, and advocates for the role of mission-driven homebased care providers including home health, hospice, and palliative care. VNAA membership voted to appoint six new Board members at the annual National Leadership Conference in Washington, DC on March 8.

In December 2017, VNHC earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Home Care Accreditation for home health and hospice care by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits U.S. healthcare organizations.

The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective care.

VNHC underwent a rigorous onsite survey last September. During the survey, compliance with home care standards reflecting key organization areas was evaluated, including the provision of care, treatment and services, emergency management, human resources, individual rights and responsibilities, and leadership.

The accreditation process also provided VNHC with education and guidance to help staff continue to improve its home care program’s performance.

“We are pleased to receive accreditation from The Joint Commission, the premier health care quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” added Tanner, “Staff from across our organization continues to work together to strengthen the continuum of care and to deliver and maintain optimal home care services for those in our community.”

As healthcare in the home becomes the preferred choice by more people, it is important that home care providers are able to demonstrate that they are capable of providing safe, high quality care. Accreditation by The Joint Commission serves as an indication that the organization has demonstrated compliance to these recognized standards of safety and quality care.

VNHC BOARD OF DIRECTORS WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS

Theresa M. Borgatello is a third generation Santa Barbaran. Borgatello is a Life Coach and she takes pride in

helping women dig deeper in order to reach higher than they ever thought possible.

She enjoys providing aesthetic services to her long-time clients who have become like family to her. Most recently, Borgatello became an India Hicks Ambassador, a woman’s fashion line, creating the opportunity to further connect with women.

Helping women look and feel their very best inside and out is her passion.

As much as Borgatello has been driven to serve others professionally, she has been equally driven to give back to her community. Borgatello joined Rotary of Santa Barbara North when she was 25 years old, and served many years as a volunteer for the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation supporting fundraising events including co-chairing Saks in the City.

Over the years, Borgatello has given her time to help create successful events for the American Heart Association, the Breast Cancer Resource Center, and the Arthritis Foundation.

Borgatello serves on Marymount of Santa Barbara’s Development Committee, was a co-chair for the Marymount annual gala in 2017, and is chairing the annual gala for 2018.

Borgatello began her work with VNHC by serving on the Mother’s Day Luncheon committee in 2006. Two years ago she transitioned onto the VNHC Development Committee. She enjoys the time she spends with all the non-profit organizations that she works with and VNHC holds a very special place in her heart as VNHC has provided care for both her great-aunts and daughter.

A recognized thought leader in both employment law and trial tactics, Alex has been interviewed, quoted and published in various media outlets, including The Los Angeles Daily Journal, Santa Barbara Lawyer, the Los Angeles Times, ACC Docket, Nonprofit World, California Lawyer, Small Business Los Angeles, and For the Defense.

Craigie attended the University of California, San Diego where he received Bachelors of Arts degrees in Philosophy and Literature-Writing. He later attended Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he was a member of the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review. Prior to launching his own practice in 2014, Craigie was a Partner in a leading national law firm.

Craigie has served on the Personnel Committee for VNHC since 2016.

He also serves on the Board of Trustees for CALM, as well as the Santa Barbara Zoo Animal Welfare Committee. He was recognized in 2014-15 and 2017 by the Pacific Coast Business Times as a “Who’s Who in Professional Services.” As a published and renowned lawyer, VNHC is glad to welcome him to the Board.

To meet the needs of the community after the December Thomas Fire and the January Mudslides, the focus of PHORUM changed and VNHC presented Music is Medicine: Comfort & Renewal After Loss.

The hope was that for one evening, people would find a moment of respite through the healing power of music. This year’s PHORUM was held at the Lobero Theatre on Wednesday, March 14, and thanks to the generosity of Union Bank, admission to PHORUM was free.

Since 2014, VNHC’s PHORUM has become Santa Barbara’s annual healthcare symposium where national, regional, and local healthcare leaders share and discuss relevant issues impacting the health and well-being of our community. VNHC’s vision for PHORUM is that it continues to grow to become the trusted resource for our region’s healthcare forecast.

Lathim’s welcome to the nearly full-house audience simply stated the purpose of the evening: “This is our hug to you.”

LEGACY OF CARE

Marian Watts, who founded the Visiting Nurse Association of Santa Barbara in 1908 believed in being an advocate for those who could not access the quality of care they deserved. After graduating from the first nursing class at Johns Hopkins University, she set out to ensure that patients who physically could not make it to the hospital, or simply could not afford the medical treatment, were provided with the care they needed.

Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care continues the legacy of Marian Watts each and every day.

To celebrate the Founding Members of the newlyformed Marian Watts Society, the Jurkowitz Center for Performing Arts hosted the inaugural Marian Watts Reception in the McCune Founders Room at the Granada Theatre. Over 50 of VNHC’s most devoted supporters enjoyed delicious food, libations, and musical performances by VNHC Certified Music Therapist Stefana Dadas and 2018 PHORUM Keynote Performer Gary Malkin.

Olivia Newton-John, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and Amy Sky shared an intimate evening of music from their CD, “LIV ON,” at a private dinner to benefit Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care whose mission is to provide compassionate and trusted care for all.

The event was hosted at the home of Thomas Rollerson and Michael Erickson in Santa Barbara last October.

Guests were treated to reserve estate wines from Napa Valley by Nickel & Nickel and Far Niente, dinner by award winning Duo Catering & Events, and a surprise performance by Fratelli Men’s Chorus followed by songs from the “LIV ON” album by Olivia, Amy, and Beth.

The Great Hat Reception Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care staff and volunteers as well as their families gathered at Mulligan’s Café last November to celebrate another year of achievement and appreciation. Guests were invited to sport their wildest, craziest, most fabulous, or even their favorite hat. Nearly all arrived with something to cover their noggin, and the hats were certainly a sight to see. Milestone anniversaries were celebrated, hors d’oevres were served, the photo booth was a hit, and the dance floor was never empty. Thank you to all who made this event such a success!

Honoring Our Veterans Last November, VNHC staff, volunteers, and community partners gathered for our annual Veterans Day celebration organized by the Volunteer Department. The program opened with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by our favorite tradition, singer David Gonzales offering The Star Spangled Banner a capella.

Jaikoo Lee, hospice chaplain, shared a moving account of seeing GI’s in South Korea and then his own call to serve in the Korean Army followed by his immigration to the United States. This was a beautiful reminder to be grateful for our amazing country.

Guests brought photos and memorabilia for the Heroes Table and stood up when the Military Medley played the anthem for the branch of service with which they were affiliated. The event closed with a beautiful rendition of America the Beautiful by Certified Music Therapist Stefana Dadas.

Angels

Among Us Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care was honored to host three beautiful and memorable Angels Among Us remembrance services in December 2017 – one in Buellton and for the first time, two in Santa Barbara.

The services included lovely music, heartwarming reflections, delicious home baked treats, and an opportunity to remember loved ones by lighting a candle and placing an angel on a tree.

MEN’S NIGHT

Thank you to all those who were in attendance at the 15th Annual Peter Murphy Men’s Night, on April 6. It was an overwhelming pleasure to host so many men in support of the 17th Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon, Honoring Jelinda DeVorzon and Remembering Sally Fordyce. This year we raised over $69,000 to support the compassionate and trusted care provided by Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care.

PLANNING for Compassion

Years ago, Rose and Norm Jaffe chose to join the Samaritan Society and include VNHC in their estate plans, which is an accumulation of decades of their values and hard work.

Neither Rose nor Norm had yet used the valuable services of Santa Barbara’s only nonprofit hospice and home health provider, but they knew they may need to call upon the organization in the future.

In 2016, Norm passed in comfort and peace under the compassionate care of the VNHC staff at Serenity House. Rose, who had spent 70 beautiful years of dancing, traveling, and working with Norm, was utterly lost without her life partner.

Fortunately, Rose took advantage of VNHC’s bereavement services and began seeing Dairine. She shared, “Dairine pulled me out of my funk; I wouldn’t be out and about today if it wasn’t for her.” Through photos and items of importance, Dairine was able to include Norm in Rose’s session and bring Rose into a mindset of positivity and hope.

Both Rose and Norm have now directly experienced the love and compassion of the caregivers at VNHC, and Rose feels content that her planned gift will sustain the care they provide to thousands of other individuals in Santa Barbara County each year. Please consider making a planned gift to VNHC and joining Rose in the Samaritan Society, where you too can make a difference at end of life or during a recovery and healing process.
