Meet Becky
Becky Bautista is the VNA Health nurse in charge of monitoring daily the 18 patients on Telehealth. VNA Health is the only local homecare agency with Telehealth, which is a donorfunded program using technology to monitor high-risk patients. Becky ensures patients’ blood pressure, heart rate, and other vitals are on target and helps patients adjust their medications, diet or necessary activities. Becky not only keeps these patients safe in their homes, but helps to reduce hospitalizations and unplanned doctor visits.

The daughter of a Telehealth patient in 2019 expressed her sincere gratitude for the program and jokingly refused to let her mom be discharged because her mother has not been hospitalized for over a year since joining the program, when before she was at the hospital on a monthly basis. Her mom is not only being monitored, but learning to take better care of herself and her symptoms to avoid hospitalizations.

In 2019 VNA Health was proud to care for a baby on hospice. The baby had serious health complications and was waiting in the hospital for a corrective surgery. After months in the hospital, the parents wanted normalcy for their family, especially their eldest child—a toddler—and were given the option to go onto VNA Health Home Hospice, which would allow them to go home. They treasured those weeks of “normal” home life prior to surgery with BOTH of their children, and the care their baby received to stay comfortable during that time. VNA Health was the only hospice that would care for this patient.

In 2019, a stroke victim who was a resistant in an assisted living facility, yet bed bound, remained safely at home with VNA Home Health services and progressed successfully to be able to use a cane. His desire to remain in his own home was made possible, and his physical health greatly improved.

In 2019, music was used to continue to heal our community after tragedy. At the 18th Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon, Grammynominated artist, Andra Day, and 2018 debris-flow survivor, Lauren Cantin, performed Day’s uplifting song Rise Up, for an emotional crowd remembering the mothers who passed in the 2018 tragedy. This was another beautiful example of how music is medicine, a phrase that perfectly describes the VNA Health Music Therapy Program.

Mara has been with VNA Health for 8 years as a bilingual Hospice Medical Social Worker and now as a bilingual Bereavement Counselor. In 2019, she began grief sessions at SBCC twice a month to address the mental health of the students.

Yes to no one dying alone
Volunteers do everything from simply being a needed companion to driving patients to appointments to being at the bedside for the patient’s last breath when no one else can. They go above and beyond, like Arlene Radasky, NoOne-Dies-Alone (NODA) volunteer and Death Doula. In a patient’s final hours, Arlene brought a battery-operated fountain and a soft, silk blanket; and within moments, the patient’s breathing went from struggling and raspy to calm and rhythmic, giving the patient peace and dignity in life and death.
