Celebrating Synergy Bereavement in the Community

VNA Health Bereavement Counselors help Zoo staff and volunteers process their grief over the loss of Asian Elephant, Little Mac.

VNA Health Bereavement counselors started a grief session twice a month at SBCC to help students’ mental and emotional wellness.

Generous Collaborations

In addition to regularly donating their soothing pillows to Serenity House patients, owner J’Nelle Holland ran a Valentine’s Day campaign with proceeds benefitting VNA Health.

Provided free tickets to a young family with a child on VNA Home Hospice who needed fun, family bonding time.

Proud Partnerships

The Coastal Quilters Guild graciously provides quilts for the VNA Health Vet-to-Vet Program pinning ceremonies for Veterans on Hospice. Families have the option to hold onto them as a keepsake.

Flower Empower, a program of Dream Foundation, has created beautiful bouquets for VNA Health Hospice volunteers to deliver to VNA Health Hospice patients for over 12 years.

Supporting Community Education

VNA Health supports the Alzheimer’s Association and American Heart Association walks to promote the research for treatment and cure of many patients on VNA Health services, and also sponsors the FSA Senior Expo to help provide valuable information and services to the senior community.

Mind, Body & Soul Series of the Marjorie Luke Theatre delivered inspiring speakers for the overall wellness of the community. VNA Health was proud to sponsor two speakers, Dave Mochel and Noah benShea, that the Marjorie Luke Theatre brought to the community.

A registered investment advisor, Gregg has been managing investment portfolios for institutions, individuals, and family trusts for thirty-five years.

Gregg is rejoining the VNA Health Board of Directors.

VP of Operations for Sansum Clinic, Karen has devoted her career to bettering the quality of life of patients by overseeing operations for multiple clinical departments and working collaboratively with leadership to enhance community care.

Francie is a fourth generation Santa Barbara native who has worked in commercial property management for 30 years.

She has been involved with a number of other local nonprofits, and chaired the Santa Barbara Charity Regatta for the past 3 years.

Passionate about understanding and resolving the complexities of organizations, Ben has devoted much of his career to helping companies undergo transformational change. Ben is an Executive Director of Business Transformation at Amgen.

Suzi has over 30 years experience in finance and has been involved with a number of other local nonprofits. Suzi has also sat on VNA Health’s Planned Giving Committee for a number of years.

VNA Health 2019 Update We re-branded from Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care to VNA Health; we may have a new logo and name, but our services, care, and compassion remain the same.

Home Care Assistance (HCA) located in Montecito acquired our private-duty service line for the best interest of our organization, employees and community. Our current Personal Care Services clients continued to receive services without interruption during the transition. VNA Health and HCA worked together to ensure seamless support and quality care.

A community that says YES! I once heard a speaker at a conference say, “The word YES has magic within it.” I understood the point she was trying to make. Yet, I couldn’t shed the notion that magic is all about ’what you don’t see.’

To me, the word YES is all about ‘what you do see’ and the outward effect is not merely magic, but power!

The kind of power that: + changes lives + guides us with creativity and love, not fear + bestows dignity and grace to those who desperately need it + provides a sense of self worth and independence to people who feel helpless + refills purpose in those who experience a void, or loss + dispels deadly silence and, instead, puts a song in our hearts + casts aside misery and lets miracles happen!

This Impact Report is filled with people just like you who said YES to VNA Health and to our community last year. You acted upon what you saw with generosity and kindness and you empowered us to take care of those who might have otherwise gone unseen.

Becky Bautista is the VNA Health nurse in charge of monitoring daily the 18 patients on Telehealth. VNA Health is the only local homecare agency with Telehealth, which is a donorfunded program using technology to monitor high-risk patients. Becky ensures patients’ blood pressure, heart rate, and other vitals are on target and helps patients adjust their medications, diet or necessary activities. Becky not only keeps these patients safe in their homes, but helps to reduce hospitalizations and unplanned doctor visits.

VNA HEALTH FOUNDATION

In 2019 VNA Health was proud to care for a baby on hospice.

The baby had serious health complications and was waiting in the hospital for a corrective surgery. After months in the hospital, the parents wanted normalcy for their family, especially their eldest child—a toddler—and were given the option to go onto VNA Health Home Hospice, which would allow them to go home. They treasured those weeks of “normal” home life prior to surgery with BOTH of their children, and the care their baby received to stay comfortable during that time. VNA Health was the only hospice that would care for this patient.

In 2019, a stroke victim who was a resistant in an assisted living facility, yet bed bound, remained safely at home with VNA Home Health services and progressed successfully to be able to use a cane. His desire to remain in his own home was made possible, and his physical health greatly improved.

In 2019, music was used to continue to heal our community after tragedy.

At the 18th Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon, Grammynominated artist, Andra Day, and 2018 debris-flow survivor, Lauren Cantin, performed Day’s uplifting song Rise Up, for an emotional crowd remembering the mothers who passed in the 2018 tragedy. This was another beautiful example of how music is medicine, a phrase that perfectly describes the VNA Health Music Therapy Program.

Each therapist sees an average of 4-5 patients a day, and each patient needs an average of 3-4 pieces of equipment… adds up to a hefty amount of medical equipment being distributed by VNA Health directly to the patient’s home!

Yes to no one dying alone Volunteers do everything from simply being a needed companion to driving patients to appointments to being at the bedside for the patient’s last breath when no one else can. They go above and beyond, like Arlene Radasky, NoOne-Dies-Alone (NODA) volunteer and Death Doula. In a patient’s final hours, Arlene brought a battery-operated fountain and a soft, silk blanket; and within moments, the patient’s breathing went from struggling and raspy to calm and rhythmic, giving the patient peace and dignity in life and death.

Like VNA Health caregivers, VNA Health volunteers have a big heart and go above and beyond in so many ways. In her final moments, a patient’s young grandchildren were too frightened to go in her room and say goodbye. The patient’s volunteer sat with them and together they made beautiful cards for their grandma, and wrote down their farewell notes. The volunteer had the honor of sharing their cards and notes with their grandma on their behalf; the children could say goodbye on their own terms, and the patient was comforted in her final moments.

Through volunteer activities, the Auxiliary would help to raise funds for charitable care programs and services at VNA Health, and also to help maintain the garden at Serenity House.
