Superintendent’s Message
El Monte Union High School District is proud to provide learning opportunities for students that are diverse and engaging through our educational Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, which are created for students to master and gain relevant hands-on experience in academic and professional settings.
The District’s CTE pathways help students determine what they want to pursue after graduation and we are proud to help students sharpen and fine-tune their skills while they explore a variety of in-demand industries.
From culinary arts to graphic design, and from healthcare operations to manufacturing, we aim to deliver a range of pathway options for students. Woven throughout District sites, our CTE pathways train students in lucrative career options during the normal school day so that once they leave high school, they have a stronger foundation to build the next steps of their academic and professional careers.
As educators, we understand that it is important for students to make connections between what they are learning in the classroom and how those lessons will be applied after graduation. A carefully crafted curriculum helps students understand the important role they play and allows them the space to be creative and engage with a project from start to finish.
El Monte Union’s CTE pathways help ensure that students have the knowledge and resources necessary for pursuing their goals, whether that leads them to university, trade school or the workforce.

CTE Pathways to Success

CTE curriculum offers students the opportunity to learn industryrecognized skills in professional settings, earning them high school credits and job certifications that can be applied in the workforce, at a trade school or university.
The District’s five comprehensive high schools and one alternative school are each home to a variety of high-interest pathways that guide students to potential career paths after graduation.
Students gain hands-on experience across different industries and disciplines with specialized focuses on specific sectors. Courses are set at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels so that when students complete a pathway, they are eligible to earn certificates that are recognized by the State of California and employers.
When creating the District’s CTE pathways, El Monte Union administrators and educators worked to ensure that students had access to programs that are relevant to current and future industries, as well as locally emerging fields. The District also boasts strong community partnerships, which help students stay local when interning or working after graduation.
Future pathways students can look forward to:
ɋ Green energy technology and awareness – The District has built two greenhouses at Arroyo and South El Monte high schools to serve as the foundation for a hydroponic course in which students will learn to grow produce using low-impact farming methods.

Students interested in displaying their creativity can channel their talents through graphic design, learning about image generation and editing, screen printing, magazine layout, and illustration design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. The curriculum focuses on digital design, tools, processes, and systems that are commonly used in the industry.

Anyone with an eye for film can learn the foundational elements of writing, photography, visual perception, and design through the District’s Film and Video Production pathway. The pathway encompasses all industry elements, with students learning the use and impact of film, how to use and set up cameras, and how to work sound and lighting equipment in a television studio.

Students learn construction techniques for stage property and scenery and gain hands-on experience in stage crew work and a variety of radio and television positions.

In partnership with Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC), the Residential and Commercial Construction Pathway offers students a year-long dual enrollment curriculum designed to provide hands-on experience in the construction industry. Students receive college credit while taking the course and are empowered to explore and develop essential job skills such as project management, teamwork, problemsolving, and technical proficiency.

Students receive a glimpse into the business world through this pathway that promotes financial literacy and life skills, all while preparing them for careers as entrepreneurs, tax consultants, auditors, or accountants. The curriculum aims to provide the skills and foundations needed for areas such as business operations, money management and accounting, and personal finance. The Teacher Preparation Academy trains students for careers in TK-12 education, including school counseling, teaching, and before- and after-school program support. Students study child development, positive guidance and counseling techniques, age-appropriate and gradeappropriate learning strategies, and instructional design all while working directly with elementary learners.

Students take complex ideas and turn the concepts into detailed, technical designs through planning, preparing, and interpreting drawings and models with traditional drafting or computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) techniques.

The Systems Programming pathway prepares students for careers as computer programmers, software developers, web developers and information security analysts while earning college credit through the District’s Dual Enrollment partnership with Río Hondo College. The computer science curriculum focuses on the design, development, implementation, maintenance, and management of systems that rely on software programs to meet the operational needs of modern business organizations.

Students work directly with patients and provide hands-on care while they study to gain an understanding of the prevention, treatment and management of illnesses, the preservation of mental and physical well-being, and pharmacy technician skills.

Through this pathway, students explore the transportation industry, including motor vehicles and rail systems, to gain knowledge on the construction, repair, and workings of various machines. Students learn through work-based instruction in an on-campus auto body shop, preparing them for careers as maintenance technicians, auto mechanics, and engineers. The District is developing a partnership with local business organization Longo Toyota to support the CTE program so students can learn about electric vehicle maintenance and repair.

Creating a Foundation for College: Early College Academy 為大學奠定基礎：Early College Academy
El Monte Union High School District partnered with Río Hondo College (RHC) in 2018 to launch the Early College Academy at South El Monte High School, providing students with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and college credit toward a two-year associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree at the same time – saving students on time and money. Through this pathway, students take college courses for free during the regular school day on the South El Monte High campus or at RHC.
