TRUMP: ISRAEL TO PAY “HIGH PRICE” OVER JERUSALEM

Israel will have to pay a high price in future peace negotiations with the Palestinians in return for US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Trump offered the stark warning whilst addressing supporters during a campaign rally in Charleston, West Virginia.

Recalling his landmark ruling and subsequent decision to move the US Embassy to the holy city, though pressured by world leaders not to make what was viewed a controversial announcement, the US leader stood firm due to its historical significance and long-term benefits.

Explaining his strategy, he said, “If there’s ever going to be peace, remember I said it, with the Palestinians it was a good thing to have done because we took it off the table.

“Every time there were peace

talks, they never got past Jerusalem becoming their capital, so I said let’s take it off the table.

“And you know what, in the negotiation, Israel will have to pay a higher price because they won a very big thing, but I took it off the table.

“But they’ll (the Palestinians) get something very good because it’s their turn next. Let’s see what happens.”

The president once again criticised former Presidents for not delivering campaign promises to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the US Embassy to Jerusalem.

“I understand now what happened,’ he explained.

“Every president, many, many presidents, they said ‘we’re going to do it. We’re going to move our Embassy to Jerusalem. It’s going to be the capital of Israel. We’re going to do it, we’re going to do it’ and then

Israel plan for ‘two-front’ conflict

BY ADAM MOSES Israel is prepared for a ‘two-front’ conflict if necessary Defence Minister, Avigdor Lieberman confirmed this week.

Lieberman made the comments at a press conference following a military exercise in the Golan Heights in view of the media attention on events in the south of the country.

“We are following all the changes and events in Syria, including in Lebanon,” he said.

“The wise thing to do is to be prepared on both fronts all the time, both in the south and in the north.

“I see in the media, ‘There has been a balloon in the south.” They say ‘Yes, there were balloons, but it’s balloons only, not an incendiary balloon.”

“There is no doubt that there is a decrease in the number of incidents but it’s not enough.

“What is important is to create an absolute connection between security calm and economic benefits.

“The facts on the ground are without doubt that there is a dramatic decrease in the number of incidents.”

Lieberman acknowledged indirect talks between Israel and Hamas were taking place through Egypt, the UN and international leaders.

“From my point of view, the only

arrangement is the situation in the field,” he said.

“If the general arrangement is to be achieved, the precondition is an arrangement regarding the POWs and MIAs. “At the moment, we are operating unilaterally according to the reality on the ground, and this is likely how it will continue.”

Lieberman’s comments came days after refusing to comment on an ongoing argument with Education Minister Naftali Bennett over his actions.

Bennett had been direct in his viewpoint on the matter.

“Lieberman chose surrender that will lead to war,” he said.

“The delusional belief that talking to Gaza residents will bring down Hamas and bring security to the residents of the Gaza border is complete nonsense and irresponsible.

“The same Lieberman who declared he would bring down Hamas and eliminate (Hamas leader) Haniyeh is now giving them rewards at the expense of Israel’s security.”

He added, “The weak policy he’s leading under the guise of responsibility and pragmatism has been allowing Hamas to burn the south for 140 days and dictate to the residents there when to run for shelter and when to come out.

“Those who surrender to terrorism, bring terrorism and Lieberman surrendered.

“His attitude endangers the State of Israel and will lead to an inevitable conflict under terms Hamas will dictate and at a time of its convenience.”

Lieberman’s office would not to respond to Bennett’s viewpoint but a spokesman for his Yisrael Beytenu party said government policy was determined by those present at Cabinet meetings.

They also noted Bennett should concentrate on his remit in office.

“He who is willing to sacrifice the blood of our soldiers at the altar of political considerations with his recklessness is unworthy of dealing with issues of defence, and should instead dedicate his time to the opening of the school year, for which he is responsible,” they noted.

Regional Cooperation Minister, Tzachi Hanegbi, was not taking sides.

“In Cabinet meetings, there is an almost complete consensus regarding the way the prime minister, the defence minister and the defence establishment are acting,” he said.

“There are different opinions regarding the most efficient way to deal with the situation. It is their right to state their positions, as long as they do so with manners.”

In the meantime, Israel closed the Erez border crossing in the Gaza Strip on Sunday morning.

The decision followed a March of Return

rally that saw two Palestinians killed in protests last Friday and delays in reaching a ceasefire agreement with Hamas.

The crossing will open on humanitarian grounds but the latest closure, seen as symbolic as the crossing is mainly used by aid organisations, is damaging to a long-term truce in the region.

Hanegbi acknowledged there had been a “dramatic decrease” in the scale of the attacks but was succinct in his views.

“We are dealing with terror,” he noted.

“We are trying to strike it while on the brink of war, without it escalating into another unnecessary round of conflict.”

Discussing the closure further, Hanegbi said it was a “yellow card” warning to Hamas.

“We again saw improvised bombs, Molotov Cocktails and all the other phenomena that we don’t want to see next to the border,” he noted.

“In recent months, Hamas was subjected to a long string of determined strikes.

“We were mindful not to unnecessarily escalate things too much because we have nothing that we can expect to gain from a large campaign, but Hamas lost almost 180 terrorists.

“It seems that in the last week there has been a different calculation among Hamas.

“After all, it is not for no reason that they stopped launching incendiary balloons and it is not for no reason that they stopped shooting at the border.”

Israel praises former UN chief Annan

BY LEAH WAXLER The Israeli government paid tribute to former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, following his death in Switzerland last weekend.

The 80-year-old died after a short, unspecified illness.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joined world leaders in paying respect to a man who fought against anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.

“We will remember him as having been very active in the international arena and as someone who fought anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial,” he said.

“We send our condolences to his widow and his family.”

A supporter of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he was involved in peace negotiations between the sides throughout his tenure between 1997-2006.

CAA calls for Unite head McCluskey’s resignation

BY ADAM MOSES The Campaign Against Antisemitism has called on Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey, to resign after what they labelled an “outrageous” attack on the Jewish community.

McCluskey, who represents the largest trade union in the UK, accused Jewish organisations of seeking a split in the Labour Party and plotting to ensure anti-Semitism crisis is “prolonged and intensified”.

Writing in the Huffington Post, McCluskey accused Jewish community organisations of presenting anti-Semitism in the Labour Party in a “wildly exaggerated” manner.

Listing a series of actions by leader Jeremy Corbyn to tackle anti-Semitism, McCluskey attacked the Jewish community.

“What is the response from the leading Jewish community organisations to (Corbyn’s) record of reaching out, of understanding, and of action? Intransigent hostility and an utter refusal to engage in dialogue about building on what has been done and resolving outstanding difficulties,” he noted.

McCluskey accused Jewish newspapers of “a thoroughly irresponsible act of fear-mongering” for calling Labour under Corbyn an “existential threat” to British Jewry, and he declared that Jewish figures were “trolling” the Labour leader.

McCluskey added that he was at a loss to understand motives of the leadership of the Jewish community, called the Labour Party’s refusal to adopt the International Definition of Antisemitism a “misunderstanding” and demanded the Jewish community “put this row behind us”.

He ended by branding Labour MPs standing up to anti-Semitism in the Party as secretly “embracing capitalism, the free market and the alliance with Trump’s America”.

“He must immediately resign,” fumed CAA chairman, Gideon Falter.

“It is outrageous to attack the Jewish community for expressing our fears that Jeremy Corbyn is an anti-Semite and that his Party is institutionally anti-Semitic.

“Which other minority would be set upon merely for voicing concern?

“Mr McCluskey’s utterly disgraceful interventions in Labour’s anti-Semitism crisis have each blamed hidden agenda’s for the problem and sought to minimise its scale.

“Mr Corbyn said that nobody should seek to doubt the motives of those who allege anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, and on that basis, he should demand that Mr McCluskey be investigated by the Party immediately.

“Of course, Mr Corbyn will not do that, and the Party will not investigate, which is one of the

reasons why we have referred the Party to the Equality and Human Rights Commission.”

CAA outlined in a statement McCluskey’s disgraceful track record of interventions in the Labour Party’s antis-Semitism crisis.

“He used a BBC interview to call anti-Semitism “mood music” to “undermine Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership” and claimed that those making allegations of anti-Semitism have been “playing games”,” the statement noted.

“He has even claimed that media coverage of the allegations is

a “right-wing” plot and rallied his supporters to mass-report a Twitter account that exposes anti-Semites in the Labour Party.

“Earlier this year, writing in The New Statesman, he launched an attack on Labour MPs who fight anti-Semitism in the Party, claiming they oppose Mr Corbyn on every point and merely use anti-Semitism as a tool, threatening them with the prospect of being “held to account”, having hinted at “mandatory reselection”.

The Board of Deputies have also been outraged by the Unite leader.

“We note that Len McCluskey has advocated the adoption of the full IHRA definition of anti-Semitism and its illustrative examples,” said a spokesman.

“However, his attack on the Jewish community is both unfair and unwarranted.

“We have had a deluge of words from the Labour leadership. It is about time that the Party resolved this crisis by taking the firm and decisive action which the communal leadership set out for them in detail months ago.

“They have so far failed to do what is right.”

WJC build bridges with Moldovan Jewish community

BY LEAH WAXLER World Jewish Congress held positive talks with Republic of Moldova government ministers and Jewish community leaders on a recent visit.

Holocaust education, restitution of Jewish property, refurbishment of Jewish cemeteries, security of Jewish communities and fighting antisemitism were key topics discussed.

WJC’s delegation included the community president, Alexander Bilinkis, together with EuroAsian Jewish Congress president ,Mikhail Mirilashvili and director general, Haim Ben Yaakov.

Moldova’s 20,000 Jewish community is spread throughout the republic.

Jewish identity and culture are celebrated in literature, musical composition and theatre.

Talks with Foreign Minister, Tudor Ulianovschi, underlined a need to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism

and importance of issuing public condemnations of anti-Semitism.

“Minister Ulianovschi emphasised a commitment of Moldovan authorities to build a society in a spirit of tolerance, non-discrimination and respect for rights of citizens of all ethnic groups,” said WJC president Robert Singer.

A meeting with Minister of Economy and Infrastructure, Chiril Gaburici, centred on Jewish property, refurbishment of cemeteries, kashrut and a Jewish centre for tourists.

Discussions with Education Minister, Monica Babuc, focused on training teachers about the Holocaust, creating a museum of Jewish history and preserving monuments dedicated to Holocaust Victims.

“Restitution of Jewish property and refurbishment of Jewish cemeteries were important topics,” said Mr Singer.

“We visited Alexandreni, once a home to a flourishing Jewish community in the 17th century. The community was eradicated during

the Holocaust and there is no Jewish presence there.

“A small Jewish cemetery goes back to the 18th century and includes mass graves.

“The cemetery is neglected but we are committed to refurbishing this historic burial ground and dozens of others around the country.

“Moldovan officials, including Minister Gaburici, expressed an intention to help us in this endeavour, beginning with an initial pilot of 10 sites.

“We look forward to future cooperation on all levels.”

After a meeting with Democratic Party of Moldova chairman, Vlad Plahotniuc, on the Jewish community and Moldova bilateral ties with Israel, the delegation met local Rabbis to address religious practice and daily Jewish life.

The trip was part of an ongoing effort by WJC to visit 100 affiliated Jewish communities worldwide on a regular basis.

To date, sixty communities have been visited.

Uganda Jewish community gets maternity centre

BY LEAH WAXLER The Jewish community of Uganda has a new maternity centre thanks to the efforts of an Israeli midwife.

Ilana Shemesh raised $12,000 for the Shifra and Puah facility after witnessing appalling conditions expectant mothers had to endure on a trip to the country a year ago.

Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, who presides over the local community, attended the opening ceremony in Abayudaya.

Fundraising efforts provided cribs, medical equipment, medicines, pulse monitors and an incubator for the centre which saw two births on the first the night after opening.

Ms. Shemesh, chairman of Adat Shalom Emanuel congregation in Rehovot, addressed community leaders after discovering poor services available in comparison to Israel.

“Conditions in the governmental hospital are terrible and private hospitals are very expensive,” she said.

“There are no monitors and no delivery rooms, many women are giving birth in their homes.

“Diseases like malaria, tetanus and TB, that the Western world almost eradicated, are still endangering Uganda’s residents, including pregnant women and new born babies.

“The situation is dire, villagers have no money at all. Babies are at risk of infected the minute they are born.”

Women who can be identified as being Jewish can attend the centre, which is run by local midwives.

It is hoped midwives from Israel and around the world will visit monthly to teach local midwives new delivery techniques.

A funding campaign has been established to further benefit the project.

Milah UK urges caution on untested research around circumcision and SIDS An Israel-born genetics scholar from Britain published a study claiming that circumcision of boys increases the risk of cot death, but a prominent Dutch pediatrician dismissed his findings as “nonsense.”

Eran Elhaik of the University of Sheffield published a study last month stating that the global perseverance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, and non-medical circumcision of very young boys “are strongly and significantly correlated.”

The study is titled “Adversarial childhood events are associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.”

English-speaking countries practice significantly more non-medical circumcision of boys than other countries and “have significantly higher SIDS prevalence than non-Anglophones,” states the study, which was published last month on the website Biorxiv.

Milah UK Co-Chair Dr Simon Hochhauser said: “This study has only been published on a website. Relying on media reports, it seems that it has not as yet been peer-reviewed. Investigation and diagnosis of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a difficult, complex medical issue. Invoking parent blame – as this article appears to do – is a serious matter. We look forward to having the opportunity to consult

with UK experts on SIDS once the paper has appeared in a reputable journal; but in the interim, we note that no increased incidence of SIDS has previously been reported in Jewish boys compared with other boys in the UK.” Hugo Heymans, one of the Netherlands’ foremost pediatricians who for decades had worked at the Amsterdam Academic Medical Center, dismissed Elhaik’s study as “flawed, biased and unreliable,” the Reformatorisch Dagblad daily reported earlier this week.

“Jewish parents have nothing to worry about,” said Heymans, who is himself Jewish.

The study is not Elhaik’s first controversy involving Jews. In 2016, he and a colleague published a studysuggesting that today’s Ashkenazi Jews originate from converts to Judaism in what today is Turkey. Leading scholars of Ashkenazi Jewry dismissed that study as flawed and unsubstantiated.

Elhaik’s PhD, earned at at the University of Houston in 2009, is in molecular evolution.

The circumcision study’s results are based on data from 15 countries and over 40 U.S. states during the years 1999-2016. Elhaik’s team looked at the relationships between SIDS and what the researchers said were two common causes of stress in very young infants: male neonatal circumcision and premature birth.

In the United States, circumcision accounted for some 14.2 percent of the prevalence of SIDS in males, the researchers wrote, adding that this is “reminiscent of the Jewish myth of Lilith, the killer of infant males.”

In a tweet, Elhaik asserts that the myth of Lilith — a female demon who is sometimes blamed for the death of infants — is based on Jews’ “unconscious” fear of SIDS associated with circumcision. Fear of SIDS “is why Jews don’t trim boys’ hairs until” age three, he tweeted, cited a haredi Orthodox custom. “They try to pass boys as girls to trick #Lilith because they knew that girls die less than boys.”

SIDS rates are significantly lower in U.S. states where Hispanic people make up more than eight percent of the population, the researcher wrote. Circumcision is relatively rare in Latin America.

Heymans noted that Elhaik’s study does not take into account the potential impact of additional factors that may influence SIDS. “There are many social-economic differences between Hispanics and White Americans, as well as different eating habits” that are not factored in Elhaik’s study, Heymans said.

SIDS prevalence was the lowest in the Netherlands, with 0.06 deaths per 1,000 births, and highest in the United States, with 0.82 deaths.

According to the World Health Organization, at least 61 percent of American circumcise their children. In the Netherlands, where only Muslims and Jews tend to perform the procedure, that figure is lower than five percent of the population.

Jews typically have boys circumcised when they are eight days old. Among Muslims, circumcision mostly occurs later in childhood but before the child enters adolescence. SIDS can occur only during the child’s first year of life.

In 2014, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, recommended circumcision as a means of reducing HIV contraction. In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics stated that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks, but the benefits are not great enough to recommend universal newborn circumcision.

But the children’s ombudsmen of all Scandinavian countries said in 2014 that circumcision of boys violates their human rights needlessly because it does not provide proven medical benefits, according to several studies.

The custom of circumcision of boys is under attack in Western Europe. Left-wing activists cite children’s rights issues and right-wing critics say circumcision is a foreign import that should be limited.

95-year-old Nazi guard deported from US

Concentration camp guard suspect Jakiw Palij has finally been deported to Germany. Stripped of his citizenship for “participation in acts against Jewish civilians” whilst an armed guard at Trawniki camp in Nazi-occupied Poland he was set to be deported in 1994. But Palij inexplicably remained in New York with his wife, Maria, now 86, because Germany, Poland, Ukraine amongst other countries refused to take him.

The Jewish community was incensed and made ongoing protests to no avail down the years. Records show Palij served at Trawniki in 1943 when thousands of prisoners in occupied Poland were brutally murdered. He admitted serving in Trawniki but denied involvement in war crimes.

The beginning of his eventual deportation began last September when New York’s 29-member congressional delegation called on the State Department to ratify his deportation. Diplomatic negotiations followed with President Donald Trump making the case a priority. Germany’s Interior Ministry, Justice Ministry and Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office would not comment where Palij will be taken nor what will happen to him.

Prosecutors have said there is not enough evidence to charge him with wartime crimes. His deportation though will be welcomed by those seeking justice. The White House announced the decision to deport on Tuesday.

Palij is the last Nazi war crimes suspect to face deportation from the United States.

He was taken from his home in New York City 25 years after investigators challenged him about his whereabouts in the Second World War. Palij lied to gain entry to US citing he was a farmer and factory worker during the period.

When questioned by the Justice Department in 1993 he admitted he would not have gained a visa telling the truth. Hiding his past, Palij worked as a draughtsman until retiring until investigators discovered his name on a Nazi roster and a former guard confirmed he was living in America.

Palij is the first Nazi war crimes suspect deported since Germany accepted John Demjanjuk in 2009. Demjanjuk was convicted as an accessory to over 28,000 killings in 2011 whilst serving as a Nazi guard. He died 10 months later, aged 91, with an appeal pending.

Commenting on Trump’s address regarding the Palestinians getting something “very good” as it’s their turn at a press conference in Jerusalem’s King David Hotel during a diplomatic trip to Israel, US National Security Advisor John Bolton made it clear the Jerusalem announcement last December was not “an issue of quid pro quo.”

Clarifying Trump’s stance he explained, “As a dealmaker, as a bargainer, he would expect, you would expect, I would expect that the Palestinians would say ‘OK, great.

So, we didn’t get that one and now we want something else. And we’ll see how it goes.

“The fundamental point is that ultimately

this is something that the parties are going to have to agree on.

“When the parties talk about it and agree, they’ll decide between themselves what the price of that, if anything, was.”

Bolton added that there was no timetable for releasing the administration’s much-awaited Mideast peace plan despite media reports to the contrary.

“There’s been a lot of progress on relations in the region as a result of the process of going through the possible outlines of what the plan would look like,” Bolton said.

“There have been dramatic geo-strategic changes in the Middle East with the recognition that the Iran nuclear deal has failed and failed badly so that gives the possibility of alignment with Israel and many of its Arab neighbours that nobody would have predicted years before.”

Bolton also would not discuss US recognition of Israel’s claim of sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

“I’ve heard the idea being suggested but there’s no discussion of it, no decision

within the US government,” he said.

Israel captured land from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War in a move not acknowledged internationally.

Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz claimed there could be US acceptance some months ago but issues over Israel’s capital and US Embassy move have stalled talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Bolton though did not rule out such a notion, especially if there is a Palestinian State.

“I think it’s been the US view for a long time that ultimately Israelis and Palestinians are going to have to agree on this,” he said.

“Nobody’s going to impose a peace in that respect.”

Bolton added that peace talks could resume with Abbas when he was ready to do so.

“It’s up to him,” he said.

Bolton though was succinct on Washington’s fund cuts to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which offers aid to Palestinians displaced by the 1948

War of Independence.

“UNRWA is a failed mechanism,” he said.

“It violates standard international law on the status of refugees.

“UNRWA’s program is the only one in history based on the assumption that refugee status is hereditary, and I think it is long overdue that we have taken steps to reduce funding.”

UNRWA and the Palestinians have warned cuts will increase hardship in Gaza.

But Bolton blamed Gaza’s predicament on Hamas “Much of UNRWA’s expenses really go to perpetuating the refugee status of the Palestinian people, and I think that’s a mistake,” he explained.

“I think it’s a mistake from a humanitarian point of view, a perpetuation of an unnatural status.

“I think what we want to see for Palestinians is real, gainful employment.

“Unless you have functioning economies, you are never going to have social and political stability.”

Corbyn faces questions after 2010 meeting with Hamas leaders

BY LEAH WAXLER Under-fire Jeremy Corbyn faces questions after being reported to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards for failing to declare a visit to meet Hamas leaders in 2010.

Israeli news channel i24 News reported the Labour leader visited Israel and West Bank with lobby group Middle East Monitor and met two groups of Hamas officials.

Corbyn failed to declare in the Commons Register of Members Interests the visit was funded by Middle East Monitor and Friends of Al-aqsa.

At the time the minimum threshold for gifts to be declared was £660.

Another MP on the same visit declared it in the register and stated it cost £927.

A Middle East Monitor report, uncovered by i24 News, noted Corbyn met senior Hamas members Ahmad Attoun, Khaled Abu-Arafah and Muhammad Totah.

He also visited the wife of a man convicted of spying for Hezbollah, whom the report called a “political prisoner”.

There is no record of him meeting Jewish Israelis.

After the visit, Corbyn wrote in his Morning Star column: “It is time to bring those Israelis who committed crimes against humanity to account and to end the EU Israel Trade Agreement while the occupation and settlement policy continues.”

A Labour party spokesperson appeared to back their leader.

“Jeremy has a long and principled record of solidarity with the Palestinian people and engaging with actors in the conflict to support peace and justice in the Middle East,” they said.

“That is the right thing to do.”

Conservative MP Andrew Percy reported the matter to the Parliamentary Commissioner.

“Whether the trip was properly declared or not, this visit was a further example of Mr Corbyn’s apparent indulgence of extremists such as Hamas,” he said.

“We are repeatedly told that these visits are to promote peace but in truth they do the exact opposite by giving credibility to the most extreme elements of just one side of this conflict.

“Mr Corbyn has clearly picked a side in this conflict and it is most certainly not the side of peace.”

Corbyn has condemned former Paisley and Renfrewshire Labour MP Jim Sheridan, suspended from the party following a complaint about a social media post, but issues continue to come up.

Anti-Israel group Free Speech on Israel will not appear on the Party’s conference fringe events in Liverpool next month after causing outrage 12 months ago.

IDF chief makes ‘goodwill’ trip to Druze holy site

BY ADAM MOSES IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot, visited Druze holy site, the tomb of Sheikh Amin Tarif, ahead of Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) last weekend.

Eizenkot met spiritual leader, Sheikh Moafaq Tarif, and representatives of the Bedouin community.

The chief of staff also met Druze and Bedouin IDF officers to discuss the IDF’s efforts to integrate minority populations into IDF ranks.

The past 12 months have seen a 30 percent increase in recruitment of members from the Bedouin community, while the Druze community has continued its integration into a wide range of units.

Lt. Gen. Eizenkot reiterated the importance of minority communities’ contribution to the country’s military in an impassioned address.

“In order for the military to fulfil its mission, it requires high-calibre people in

its ranks, and I witness the contribution of Bedouin and Druze communities each time I visit the IDF,” he said.

Israel support US on stopping Iran nuclear threat

BY ADAM MOSES The United States is determined to stop Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.

National Security Advisor John Bolton was speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem during talks on a three-day visit to Israel this week.

“Your analysis of the issues we have to face is right on spot target,” said Bolton.

“It’s a question of the highest importance for the United States that Iran never gets a deliverable nuclear weapons capability.

“It’s why President Trump withdrew from the wretched Iran nuclear deal. It’s why we work with our friends in Europe to convince them to take stronger steps against the Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile program.”

Bolton, a former ambassador to the United Nations, said Iranian aggression in the Middle East was a threat to the whole world and called to reinstate sanctions lifted by the Obama administration.

And greater pressure on Tehran could halt its support of Middle East militant groups and development of ballistic missiles.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank President Trump for walking away from the terrible deal with Iran,” he said.

“The nuclear deal did not block Iran’s path to the bomb, it paved Iran’s path to an entire nuclear arsenal.

“By removing the sanctions, it enabled Iran to bring in billions and billions of

dollars to its coffers, which only fuelled Iran’s war machine in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and elsewhere.”

Hailing Trump’s Iran decision as historic, he noted, “The president’s decision to leave the disastrous Iran deal was nothing less than a hinge of history.

“Israel applauds the Trump administrations determination to re-impose tough sanctions on Iran and those doing business with Iran.

“I know that view is shared by all our Arab neighbours, or practically everyone in this region. And I frankly believe that all countries who care about peace and security in the Middle East should follow America’s lead and ratchet up the pressure on Iran.”

Netanyahu vowed to “stand with” the people of Iran in opposing the Tehran regime whilst Israel and US government stood up to the Iranian regime.

“It’s important that the people of Iran understand that our fight is not with them,” he explained. “Our fight is with the regime that brutally represses them. That arrests women for uncovering their hair, hangs gays in the public squares, that defies the aspirations for freedom of millions and millions of Iranians.”

Netanyahu and Bolton began discussions over dinner at the prime minister’s official residence in Jerusalem on Sunday.

Netanyahu made a point of thanking Bolton for his ongoing support of Israel.

“We’ve been friends for many years, and I can testify that in and out of office, you’ve been a tremendous friend of Israel, tremendous champion of the American-Israel alliance.

“It’s particularly momentous to welcome you here after the momentous decisions of President Trump, to move the embassy to Jerusalem and get out of the terrible Iran deal.”

Bolton was looking forward to developing further the US-Israel relationship.

“It’s been an exciting year and a half in the Trump administration,” he said.

“Obviously we’ve got great challenges, for Israel, for the United States and the whole world.

“The Iran nuclear weapons program, the ballistic missile programs are right at the top of the list.”

Lieutenant-Colonel Shadi Abu Fares, head of Population Administration, said his organisation is responsible for integrating all members of minority communities into the IDF. “We see the whole picture, starting with the recruitment process, the service itself and the day after release,” he noted.

Fares added, “Many see the IDF as an excellent platform for integrating into Israeli society.

“We believe in empowering and expanding the recruitment of minorities to the IDF ranks and we expect to see minority soldiers in a variety of units.”

The visit comes on the back of the recent passing of the controversial Nationality Law. Debated issues include Israel being the state of the Jewish people, Hebrew being the official language and Arabic being defined as having a special status.

West Bank settlements to get 1,000 units

BY LEAH WAXLER The Supreme Planning Committee of the Civil Administration has approved the construction of almost 1,000 housing units in Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

A quarter of 984 units have received a final approval with 56 in the settlement of Barkan, 168 in Nofim, 108 in Tzofim, 44 in Ma’ale Adumim and eight in Avnei Hefetz.

Units in Kiryat Netafim, Otniel and Beit El are at a deposit stage of planning but will be approved.

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman Lieberman sought the construction of 3,900 homes in West Bank settlements in over 30 local communities last May. Amongst his plans were hundreds of units in Adam but they are not included in the current plan.

Yesha Council, who represent Jewish settlements in the West Bank, are disappointed with the approved number.

“This is an insufficient amount and the smallest number of housing units approved in the last year and a half.,” a statement noted.

“In previous committees, the number of building permits ranged from 2,000 to 3,000, which is also relatively limited compared to a total number of permits throughout the country, which are in their tens of thousands.”

Yesha have called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remove restrictions and order a large-scale construction throughout the West Bank.

Peace Now urged the government to prioritise issues surrounding the national housing crisis.

“Instead of solving the housing crisis in Israel, the government prefers to deprive most of its citizens and nurture a welfare state located beyond the green line,” noted a statement.

“The move gives a boost to the annexation plans of the pro-settler movements and undermines the chances for peace.”

Faith communities call for new discrimination law

BY LEAH WAXLER Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh organisations have united to call for a new law against discrimination.

British political parties are regulated by the electorate but there are no specific standards to which they must adhere in relation to counter-discrimination.

The initiative, proposed by Campaign Against Antisemitism, has the backing of Tell MAMA, which campaigns against anti-Muslim hatred, the National Council of Hindu Temples, Hindu Forum of Britain and Network of Sikh Organisations.

Communities endorsed and launched a parliamentary petition calling for a new law requiring political parties to have fair, efficient and transparent procedures for tackling discrimination amongst members on Tuesday.

Failure would result in substantial

fines.

Under the proposal, parties are obliged to meet a minimum requirement for tackling all forms of discrimination, including anti-Semitism, based on CAA’s manifesto.

The move comes as Labour Party’s anti-Semitism crisis includes revelations against Jeremy Corbyn’s activities and an abject failure to expel anti-Semites.

Gideon Falter, Chairman of Campaign Against Antisemitism, said: “Our polling has found that 92% of British Jews feel that UK political parties tolerate anti-Semitism, the Labour Party unsurprisingly scoring worse than any other mainstream party.

“Recent events have led us to take the unprecedented step of referring the Labour Party to the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

“We discussed the problem with friends in other communities and found that they too had grave

concerns about discrimination in political parties.

“We hope that our parliamentary petition will reach the 100,000 signatures needed to trigger a debate on the matter in the House of Commons.”

He added, “It is clear that political parties cannot be trusted to deal with discrimination themselves.

“As the Labour Party has demonstrated so disgracefully, they make the rules up as they go along, slowing down proceedings for political allies and holding secret committee meetings to exonerate racists.

“In the face of this injustice, there is no official body with the authority to force parties to adhere to basic anti-discrimination standards.

“Political parties which have legislated to set tough standards for employers have hypocritically left themselves to their own devices.

“British politics are being poisoned by hatred. This culture of impunity and arbitrary standards must end.”

German court rules broadcaster does not need to apologize for using term “polish death camp” A German court has ruled that public broadcaster ZDF can’t be forced to post a specifically worded apology demanded by a Polish court for erroneously calling two World War II Nazi camps “Polish death camps.”

ZDF used that wording in reference to the Majdanek and Auschwitz death camps in advertising a 2013 documentary. After the Polish Embassy in Berlin objected, it changed the text to “German death camps on Polish territory.”

A Polish citizen who was a former inmate of Auschwitz and the Flossenbuerg concentration camp then launched a legal battle with ZDF, which twice apologized to him for the initial error and later published an apology.

In 2016, the plaintiff secured a ruling from a court in Krakow, Poland, ordering ZDF to post on its website for one month an apology stating that the original wording was “an incorrect formulation that distorts the history of the Polish people.”

The broadcaster did publish the text from Dec. 2016 to Jan. 2017, but the plaintiff considered its compliance unsatisfactory and sought to have the Polish ruling legally enforced.

Lower German courts ruled that the verdict can be enforced in Germany.

But the Federal Court of Justice said that it disagreed because the required formulation would violate the broadcaster’s right to freedom of opinion.

It noted that ZDF’s original formulation was clearly wrong, but the issue at hand was the wording of the apology required by the Polish court, which it said the broadcaster couldn’t be required to “publish as its own opinion.” It also found that the punishment was disproportionate, given that the original formulation was online only for four days, and ZDF had apologized and published a correction.

The use of expressions like “Polish death camps” to refer to German-run camps in occupied Poland causes deep offense in Poland.

Hampstead Synagogue summer party

Hampstead Synagogue held its annual garden party at the home of chair Madeleine Abramson but because bad weather prevailed the 70 plus members who attended enjoyed their afternoon tea indoors. They were entertained by accordionists Chazan Shlomo Gerzi and member Maurice Samuelson who played a variety of popular, jazz and Jewish music both contemporary and from over the years. The entrance fees together with a raffle raised several hundred pounds which will be used for the Synagogue’s charitable purposes.

No prior experience is necessary as full training will be given. However, it would be an advantage if the applicant had spent a year learning in a Seminary or Yeshiva, although this is not essential. The ideal candidate will be well organised, have a good eye for detail and work to a high standard of accuracy.

The work involves contacting food manufacturers to ask them for information about the ingredients and manufacture of their products, inputting the details to the food database and submitting the products for Rabbinical approval when necessary. The Research Worker will also at times be asked to assist with answering product enquiries received from members of the public and KLBD licensees.

Jewish schools make the grades Jewish students across the UK celebrated on Thursday as the long awaited exam results were finally revealed. At Immanuel Collage, 51% of all students achieved A*-A Grades at A Level and 23% of all grades were A*.

Ecstatic Headmaster Garry Griffin told the Jewish Weekly, “We are delighted with this year’s A level results at Immanuel College which are even better than last years, despite the fact that the examinations have been made more rigorous and demanding as a consequence of government reforms. I would like to congratulate the students - and their teachers - who have worked so hard to achieve these magnificent grades which are thoroughly deserved. “ At Hasmonean High School, over 44% of A Level students attained A*/A grades and over 65% gained A*-B. The school told The Jewish Weekly, “ We are delighted for our Year 13 graduates who have attained excellent A Level results. A significant number have outperformed their target grades.

We are especially delighted with our Maths A Level results where 72% of the grades were A or A*.

A high number of students attained top grades, with Natan Maurer, who has secured a place to study Law at Cambridge with 4 A*s commenting: “I am incredibly pleased with these results, which I could not have achieved without the help of the network of teachers both inside and outside lessons, and the support of fellow students within Hasmonean. The leadership of the school has created an environment in which I and many others are able to reach their full potential.”

Yonina Jaffe has secured a place to study Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge with 3 A*s commenting: “I am thrilled with my results and so grateful for all the support of my school and teachers! Hasmonean gave me the confidence to make a real go at sciences and I’m excited to continue this at the next stage in university.”

Jamie steps up to JLiving Refurbs the challenge

Teenager Jamie (surname not provided) is walking 120km in August to raise money for Jewish charity Norwood, ahead of his Bar Mitzvah on 1 September.

The bespoke challenge set by Jamie, from Edgware, sees him monitor his steps every day through August. He is reaching his daily goal of 7,000 steps in a number of ways, including tennis camp and trekking through local parks.

Jamie is raising money for Norwood because when he was having trouble at school, Norwood Speech and Language Therapist Debbie Selouk helped through the charity’s Binoh service. She also helped him through his transition to secondary school.

Jamie said: “Ever since my mum contacted Debbie in Year Five she’s been a great help and even now, two years later, she’s still very helpful. I just want her to know how

grateful I am. The other reason for doing the walking challenge specifically is that I wanted to get outdoors more. I’m really enjoying it so far and the exercise, as well as the fact I’m doing a good thing for charity, is making me feel a lot better. I’m really looking forward to my Bar Mitzvah. My parents have put a lot of effort into it, especially my mum.”

Jamie’s mother Sonja added that she is “very proud” of her son.

“I wanted him to do something like this for his Bar Mitzvah and this is something we can do together. I’m trying to get out and exercise more myself and Jamie has to beat my steps for the day. It’s a good way for us to encourage each other.”

Nightingale House recognised as Jewish Community’s first ever ‘Outstanding’ care home Nightingale House recognised as Jewish Community’s first ever ‘Outstanding’ older people’s care home Nightingale Hammerson, a charity with a proven track record of innovating residential care to enhance the lives of residents, is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the Jewish community’s first-ever overall ‘Outstanding’ rating for its South London residential care home for older people. The rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) elevates the charity’s Wandsworth home, Nightingale House - the largest individual residential care home in the UK – to the top 1% of care homes nationwide. In addition to its ‘Outstanding’ rating, the home also received ‘Outstanding’ in three individual categories: for being Caring, Well Led, and Responsive.

In its response to its review, the CQC said: “We received extremely positive feedback about the standard of care provided at the home from people living there and their visiting relatives and professional health and social care representatives.” Paying tribute to the caring environment,

inspectors said that, “staff consistently demonstrated warmth, respect and empathy in their interactions with people and their relatives”, concluding that “people were supported to do as much as they could and wanted to do themselves to retain control and independence over their lives”.

Commenting on the rating, Helen Simmons, Nightingale Hammerson’s Chief Executive, said: “This is a great testament to the devotion, care and dedication that our team offers all year round. We are immensely proud to have been recognised for providing such a stimulating, nurturing environment where every person is treated as an individual. Person-centred care is at the heart of our ethos – that CQC has acknowledged this is a tribute to our care staff, activities and therapy teams which provide excellent holistic care for each individual. What it comes down to is that we really care and that is the Nightingale Hammerson difference.”

Melvin Lawson, Chairman of Nightingale Hammerson, added: “Nightingale is focused on

creating and maintaining worldclass centres of excellence. We strive to be the gold standard for what residential care homes should be. Amongst Nightingale House’s innovations recognised by CQC inspectors was the launch of the UK’s first permanent on-site nursery in a care home, bringing children, their parents and older people together daily to participate in shared social activities, such as baking, storytelling and singing. Feedback from relatives highlighted the initiative as something to be “highly commended”. Inspectors agreed, as they concluded “it was evident by the amount of laughter, smiles and hand-holding going on between the children from the nursery and the people living in the home that they

knew each other well and really enjoyed one another’s company”.

Highlighting the home’s commitment to person-centred and innovative care, “which enabled people to live active and fulfilling lives”, inspectors concluded that the Jewish ethos of the home not only allowed staff and volunteers to provide culturally-sensitive care and support to residents and their families, but also helped the home and its residents maintain its strong links to the wider Jewish community. This was echoed by residents’ feedback to the CQC, one of whom is quoted as saying: “The bonus for us is that this is a Jewish home, so our faith which is really important to us as a family, is very much supported and celebrated here.”

In addition to Nightingale House, the charity is currently undertaking a major redevelopment of Hammerson House in North London, due to reopen in 2020, which will enable Nightingale Hammerson to extend the outstanding person centred care it offers to the Jewish community to over 300 residents across its two homes.

Alison Maurice Tell us about yourself Alison Maurice has been working at PaJeS (Partnership for Jewish Schools) for almost 2 years where she is the Office Manager and Training Co-ordinator. PaJeS provides services, support and strategy to Jewish schools across the UK, this includes training for teachers, governors and headteachers, dealing with government departments and providing schools with advice. My duties are extremely varied but they include helping to co-ordinate all of the training events, keeping the office running smoothly and generally being the Office Mummy! Prior to joining PaJeS, I worked at JFS which was an amazing experience and has stood me in good stead for dealing with all of the schools at PaJeS. PaJeS shares the same office as JVN and we have a close working relationship.

Who do you currently volunteer for and what do you do?

My involvement with WIZO started over 20 years when I worked in their Head Office.

When I left to have my first child, I loved the organisation and what it stood for so much I became a volunteer. Over the last 20 years, I have not only held the position of Chair of my WIZO group but I was also vice Chair of Aviv with the now Chair of WIZO, Ronit RibakMadari. I visited Aviv groups all over the UK and was honoured to represent

the UK in Israel at Aviv Conferences. Being part of WIZO I have been fortunate to visit Israel many times and see the projects we work so hard to raise funds for. It has also given me the opportunity to meet amazing people from around the world, as WIZO is a worldwide organisation, not only learning about their fundraising activities but also about their Jewish lives and the problems they face with anti-Israel and anti-Semitic issues in their countries. You can often feel distant sitting in North West London when

Upon further contemplation, Jacob declared that he wished to set up a “lightbulbs and torches gemach” - a charitable facility offering lightbulbs and torches to anyone who needed them if the shops were closed.

I was also most honoured during one my WIZO trips to represent the Aviv movement and lay a wreath in the prayer hall at Yad Vashem. It was one of the most emotional moments of my life and I will never forget it.

How and why did you get into volunteering?

Volunteering was a lifeline for me when I was a full time domestic engineer (home maker) when my children were young as it kept my mind active while doing something worthwhile. Through my own WIZO group we have raised thousands of pounds running events such as supper quizzes, speaker evenings and cookery demonstrations to name a few. I have also made the most wonderful friends through my WIZO group which is called Shemesh. I truly cannot imagine my life without WIZO and I am proud to be a part of it.

This week, 20 of GIFT’s most dedicated teenage volunteers initiated and carried out a sponsored bike ride from London to Poole (200km). The group of boys raised in excess of £25,000 in sponsorship money which will go towards the GIFT Shabbat Walk Project.

The bike ride, which took the boys a total of 13 hours, was carried out seamlessly under the direction and leadership of Eliezer Gilbert with the support of Dovi Weltscher and Shira Joseph. Not only did the boys raise an incredible amount of money but in keeping with GIFT’s ethos, they gave their time, energy and skills to help others.

On completion, the boys enjoyed a delicious lunch sponsored by the Normandie Hotel and then some bonding activities.

The day culminated in a BBQ on the beach put on by Janet and Winston Gilbert with Rabbi Jesner, the Rabbi of Bournemouth Hebrew Congregation, who spoke about the beauty and sacrifice involved in all of the

The malevolent absurdity of your statement speaks for itself.

Moreover, I am a Jew by virtue of the fact that I belong to the Jewish faith. An integral part of that faith is the Torah. The Torah states categorically that the land of Israel belongs to the Jewish nation. For more than two thousand years Jews have prayed facing Israel. Many greats, when arriving for the first time to Israel would kiss its very ground. Countless people who’ve never stepped foot in Israel still have pictures of Jerusalem adorning their walls. Does my support for the land of Israel ipso facto mean that I support everything that the Israeli government says or does? That too is an absurdity, especially when you consider that there have been governments on total opposite ends of the spectrum.

Bottom line: If you hate me because I identify with Israel, then you hate me because of what it says in my Torah – i.e. because of my faith.

And if you hate me because of my faith, which is the essence of my identity as a Jew, then you are an Anti-Semite. Does that make sense?

Dear Rabbi It’s that time of year again and frankly I am feeling all the guilt.

Sometimes it overwhelms me. Why does Judaism put so much emphasis on guilt, especially this time of year?

Francesca Dear Francesca Does Judaism really believe in guilt? The 19th century Hasidic master, Rabbi Tzadok Hakohen of Lublin provided the perfect antidote to guilt. He taught his devout followers that inasmuch as we have

this propensity to migrate towards guilt, consumed with bad feelings after we may have done something wrong, one has to recognise that there are times when a particular challenge can come our way and we are effectively helpless to overcome the urge to transgress. At times, he said, we are possessed by a force larger than we can handle, leading us to stumble.

But then, rather contradictorily he added: To be sure, we don’t get to be arbiter over this. It’s not like temptation comes our way and we could say, “oh this is one of those big ones, out of my control, so it’s OK if I submit!” Needless to say our consciences are rather subjective and we could never be honest enough with ourselves. No one but G-d knows, he said, whether this particular temptation is too big to handle; only He knows whether we could or could not overcome a particular challenge.

He’s actually proposing an ingenious dichotomy, where, on the one hand we are given a perspective that on the other hand can have no practical application in our lives, for “only G-d can know.” On the one hand, I have to do what I can to resist. On the other hand, should I succumb, it is a significant way to mediate guilt, for maybe there is no way I could have overcome my weakness. This can restore our image of ourselves as simply good people who have things to fix.

In fact, guilt, I suggest to you, is really the machination of what we define as the evil inclination because it triggers low self-esteem. He tells you you’re worthless, he convinces you it’s all a waste of time such that you will then decide that what you do doesn’t matter – and so you will give up before you even begin.

Don’t listen to him, remember regardless of who you are, regardless of what you have done, you have a soul, you are a piece of the Divine.

Someone once said: “My mother doesn’t just do guilt trips. She runs the whole travel agency.” Bottom line: Judaism doesn’t believe in guilt. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the next county; to a foreign country but not to where the guilt is.

There is you – your frame of mind; your personal disposition; the things going on in your life. Maybe we feel guilty for the things we believe we could have done better. Let go of the guilt and just do things better, next time. Because in the final analysis faith is a journey, not a guilt trip. So enjoy the ride and have a sweet New Year.

KI TEITZEI: IDEOLOGY AND THE PRESERVATION OF HUMAN DIGNITY

Administration of the death penalty by Beit Din accomplished two very different goals: it served in a punitive capacity to punish the criminal and it also provided a deterrent against future crimes.

Based on this latter ‘deterent’ function the Torah proscribes hanging the bodies of severe criminals- blasphemers and idol worshippers. The public spectacle would hopefully discourage “copycat” behaviour. Though the bodies are hung, they must be swiftly removed and buried by nightfall.

In demanding this hurried removal and burial, the Torah provides a vague reason: Ki kilelat Elokim Talu- simply translated as “a suspended body disgraces God”. Despite multiple interpretations of this phrase, Rashi cites a Midrash which underscores the ignominy of a dangled body slowly decomposing. This scene would be a dishonor for God as the human body reflects Divine craftsmanship.

Belittling this Divine essence is an affront to God- or a “kilelat Elokim”. To elucidate this humiliation the Midrash presents a parable in which a twin brother of a monarch is hung for his crimes.

Since he physically resembles the king the disfiguration of his body is disgraceful to the king himself.

As all humans represent Divine construction, any defacement of our bodies create dishonour to God. This policy delicately balances between conflicting aims: to deter

crime and to preserve human dignity. Without question, God’s honour is preserved when those who severely compromise that honour are publicly punished. Alternatively, even sinners carry a Divine essence and the despoilment of their corpses devalues “tzelem Elokim”. Consequently, the body is hung but removed and buried quickly. This specific policy about quickly burying subjects of capital punishment, is part of a more general mandate about the preservation of the dignity of every human body. We bury corpses as quickly as possible to avoid any potential decomposition and defilement. Likewise, the sanctity of a dead human body must be protected by avoiding any unnecessary post-mortem activities which may deface it.

Though these values have universal application, the verse in our parsha concludes by warning us not to defile the land of Israel which God has awarded us as an inheritance. In fact, Nachmanides claimed that delayed removal of hung bodies in the land of Israel carries an extra or second prohibition beyond the general ban on extended hanging of bodies in any location- even outside of Israel. Without question, this special

warning-within Israel- is based upon the sanctity of the land. Extended hanging of bodies isn’t merely disgraceful to the body and human form but also creates a disregard for human dignity and a general carelessness about life which tarnishes the moral calibre of our experience. Though less severe than murder, the hanging of bodies is defined similarly: “Lo titamah et atmadam” – you shouldn’t pollute your land. Israel is meant to serve as the epicenter of universal welfare – murder and hanging bodies severely spoil this environment.

This agenda of conquering the land will inevitably dictate the elimination of pagan enemies. Bodies will be hung to signal victory and demoralize the enemy. Perhaps our own bodies will be hung by others who we interact with as part of the struggle to settle the land. It is precisely under these conditions and challenges that the universal dignity of the human condition must be stressed.

It is particularly in this context that the Torah reinforces the disgrace of this practice. The general dilemma of hanging bodies is even more acute in Israel.

Outside the land of Israel hanging may be necessary to deter crime but must also be curtailed to preserve human dignity. Within Israel hanging may emerge from the complications of military battle and contested settlement but must similarly be restricted to preserve the dignity of every human beingeven erstwhile opponents of our national programme.

This challenge serves as a metaphor to some of the challenges facing us in the Modern State of Israel. We are driven by Divine decree and historical warrant to settle and defend this land. As opposition to this historical inevitability still remains intense and hostile, we must defend ourselves and fashion a safe and secure environment.

Without question, this mission carries a great cost for human dignity. Under the current, less than ideal conditions, we find ourselves imposing regulations upon co-inhabitants to this land. These necessary measures severely limit their freedoms, as well as create inconvenience to local populations who are overwhelmingly innocent of any crime. The morality of our mission and the Divine nature of

our warrant shouldn’t render us callous to the curtailing of human freedoms and the compromising of the dignity of life. Too often, these concerns about freedom and dignity of “others” are adopted by those who disagree with the correctness of our mission. The term “kibush” (conquest) which opponents of Jewish settlements employ to describe our “unlicensed” and illegal presence in Greater Israel is historically offensive and factually inaccurate. Israel was inhabited by Jews well before others entered. More recently, these lands were recovered while protecting ourselves in a defensive war in 1967. We aren’t conquerors and have always been receptive to considering alternate arrangements if the broader Arab world would only make a final peace with the notion of a Jewish State. However, just because our settlement is righteous doesn’t exempt us from attempting to preserve human dignity in Israel. When fashioning original Man, God collected dirt from the Temple Mount. If all humanity originates in Jerusalem it is precisely within these precincts that human dignity must be upheld.

Our world is still imperfect, and we may not be able to fully reconcile the dual challenges of settling the “land of the Jews” while also fully championing full freedom for every human who resides in this land. However, simplistically ignoring the rights and dignities of others is xenophobic and an affront to God. Worrying solely about these rights while endangering our own lives is self-immolation.

We wait for the day that these two agendas can each be fully implemented and the day in which the security of the Jewish people in their land and the legitimate dignities of those who join us in our land are each supported.

His usually short comments deftly guide the reader through the often complicated Talmudic text, explaining key concepts, words, or the details of the topic at hand. There are few tractates without Rashi’s commentary, and one notices the lack. For example, the commentary of the Ran (Rabeinu Nissim d. 1376) on Tractate Nedarim is far lengthier than Rashi’s and almost presents a different experience of learning. In the first of three articles, Joanne Greenaway, Get Case Director at the London Beth Din, explains the function of a Beth Din in Get cases and the approach taken by the London Beth Din to resolve difficult and intractable cases.

One of the key functions of a Beth Din is to oversee the giving and receiving of Jewish divorces (Gittin). The Torah recognises that, whilst a happy marriage and home is to be strived for, in4 some cases, sadly, divorce is unavoidable. The framework provided for (in today’s sidrah – see Devarim 24:1) is one of willing consent (“He writes her a bill of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house”). The role of the Dayanim of a Beth Din is to oversee this consent and ensure that a Get is effected according to halacha and the many details laid down in the Shulchan Aruch ( Code of Jewish Law).

The London Beth Din deals with the largest share of all Gittin across the spectrum of the Jewish community. We strive to ensure that we effect halachic Gittin and that we deal with each case with the utmost sensitivity, conscious of the difficulties for those involved. We see it as crucial to work proactively; where there are cases that are not progressing smoothly, we look for new strategies, within the framework of halacha, to resolve them. Each case requires in-depth analysis of the people involved and their concerns and motivations before devising a bespoke approach.

in cases where the halachic process is abused and a Get is refused, there are often issues of controlling behaviour in the marriage.

Unlike the classic scenario of an Aguna set out in the Talmud, a woman whose husband is missing, feared dead, the cases we deal with relate to husbands whose location is known; yet they are not willing to provide consent to the Get. We also deal with many cases where the wife refuses to receive the Get. This provides difficulties based on the later enactment by Rabbeinu Gershom, in around 1000 CE, whereby unilateral divorce by a husband, as derived from the text in Devarim (quoted above), was no longer permitted; a woman’s consent to receive the Get became an additional Rabbinic requirement, albeit with less far-reaching ramifications.

In all cases, from the inception of the process, we communicate our policy and clear expectation that all parties involved honour their responsibility to deal with the Get without delay. Couples are also made aware that whilst they wait until a Get is effected, they remain married in Jewish law.

Rather than waiting until a civil divorce has been finalised or until a new relationship or even marriage is planned, couples should approach the Beth Din as soon as a marriage has broken down, in order to begin the Get process.

In such circumstances, it our hope that both men and women feel comfortable doing so, in the knowledge that we will do all we can to help them.

Often those that we are helping in a Get case are going through a time of intense stress and vulnerability. In addition to managing their case, we try to provide legal information and emotional support and we also refer them to other services, whether legal or therapeutic. In situations of domestic violence, we frequently refer women to Jewish Women’s Aid. It is no coincidence that

The Sefer Tomer Devorah is relatively small yet it is embalmed with potent words of wisdom. The Sefer authored by the Saintly Rabbi Moshe Kordovero is built on the 13 attributes of mercy mentioned at the end of Micha. (Mi kel Kamocha). The Tomer Devorah explains that the twelfth mida is Asher Nishbata Lavotenu – The Merit of our Forefathers Zechut Avot. Hashem looks down towards us with certain aspects of mercy. There are times that we are not worthy, and all we have going for us is the Zechut Avot. Our forefathers merits’ have weight until today, and help carry through even those that are not worthy.

We are taught to emulate Hashem’s attributes.

Thus we are also obligated to view others, (even if we think they are not worthy) as worthy. For they carry the merit of their fathers. This is how Hashem’s mercy extends towards us and this is how we should view others. When we don’t like a certain person, when we think that they are worthless, we should remember that they too descend from Avraham Yitzchak and Yaakov, they too carry this merit and we must love them as Hashem loves them.

Jamie’s biggest achievement is arguably the fact that many people have told her that after

She has made Kosher food look so enticing that there seemed little point in consuming the nonKosher equivalents. This is surely an accomplishment for which G-d Himself will reward her. Considering the fact that in her youth, Jamie herself consumed non-Kosher food, it is inspirational that she should now be the reason that others feel motivated to eat Kosher products.

Whilst Jamie does not boast about her feats in the cookery realm, she is keen to point out that her proudest achievement is that she has encouraged people to eat together as a family. In Jamie’s opinion, the family that eats together, stays together.

Whilst many people in G-d’s world have made a huge difference to those around them, it can be truly be said of Jamie that her influence has impacted upon those she has never met.

PREPARATION

• 2 tablespoons lemon juice

1. In a mixing bowl, toss apples, lemon juice, honey, cinnamon, salt, apricots or raisins, and bread crumbs. Set aside.

• 4 apples such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled, cored, and cut into quarters and then cut crosswise into ¼-inch pieces

• ⅓ cup honey • 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon plus ½ teaspoon for sprinkling • ½ teaspoon kosher or sea salt • ½ cup dried and chopped apricots or raisins • ½ cup dried bread crumbs • 8 phyllo sheets, thawed • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil • Garnish: drizzle of honey for serving

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Lay 1 sheet of phyllo on lined pan. Brush with evoo and continue layering and brushing remaining phyllo.

3. Scatter apples on phyllo, being sure to leave a ½-inch border. Roll phyllo, starting on the long side, to enclose filling. Tuck seam under.

4. Brush top with evoo and sprinkle with a dusting of cinnamon. Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

5. Slice with a serrated knife and drizzle with honey before serving.

KOSHER DINING AT DELICATESSEN Should a Kosher restaurant look Jewish?

We live in cosmopolitan times and the type of food we Jews like has a much wider audience than hitherto.

Delicatessen is new and a few hundred yards down the slope from Hampstead Underground on Rosslyn Hill. The area is affluent and extremely multicultural and if you did not notice the KF Kashrut certificate sign tucked away behind the bar you might think it was just another of the myriads of Middle Eastern eating places springing up all over London.

The give-away is the opening hours. At this time of the year it does not include Friday or Saturday.

What Delicatessen offers is an innovative and most nourishing dining experience a world apart from the traditional Yiddish style fayre. No chopped liver to be seen, nor kneidlach soup. But

plenty of really traditional and filling dishes with heritage from the Ottoman Empire.

Sharing plates are all the rage even it has been the way of the Middle East since time immemorial. Delicatessen is very trendy in this respect and the portions large.

We started with golden cauliflower with tahini and smoked chilli (£8) a fine opener and one’s partner choosing hummus masabacha with harissa and tahini (£7.50). Be careful with the slow cooked and pulled salt beef schnitzel. Three sizeable chunks are provided, each a meal in itself (£12).

Or Gorlan is the man in charge when it comes to the kitchen. Born in Israel, the culinary influences of his Moroccan and Lebanese grandparents ignited his love of cooking at a young age and he later became the unofficial family chef. After completing mandatory military service, Or began working in Tel Aviv’s finest restaurants, including Mul Yam and Brasserie M&R, where he held the position of Senior Sous Chef, serving over 350 covers daily. Moving to London, Or found himself with Yotam Ottolengh, the Jerusalem born eponymous Israeli chef and restaurateur. As Head Chef of Ottolenghi’s Belgravia for almost two years, he was responsible for leading staff at the highest level and honing his skills on Middle Eastern cuisine.

For the mains the choice is varied with European dishes aplenty as were those more from the North African tradition.

Seared duck breast, celeriac purée, heritage carrots and glaze (£28) went down well but there was nothing wrong with Moroccan chicken meatballs with fresh Jerusalem artichoke, lemon and basmati rice (£25). Spotted on another table we noticed the couple were well into seared fresh tuna salad with potatoes, French beans, soft boiled egg, kalamata olives and anchovies (£23), whilst the other party was clearly not of the adventurous type and went for 300g bone marrow and rib eye burger with mustard mayo pulled chips (£21). If you have any room left warm apple strudel with ice cream and cardamom spiced syrup (£6).

Machane Yehuda Market, Jerusalem Israel’s many outdoor and indoor gourmet food markets make the country a foodie playground, and are also a great source for amazing picnic loot.

These days, Jerusalem’s Machane Yehuda market is jam-packed with restaurant and gourmet food choices alongside vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables each day.

Take your pick of sesame-donned honey-drenched rugelach, peppery-sweet Jerusalem kugel, or more trendy flavored halvas, exotic dried fruits, or whatever the latest fast food spots offering authentic foods from a variety of cuisines happen to be, and then head out of the madness to have a serene picnic at the Wohl Rose Garden near Israel’s Parliament (Knesset).

North Beach, Eilat

Luton base in October following what it says has been a year of “massive” growth and marking the next phase of expansion for its UK operations.

Luton passengers should bear in mind that whilst the terminal building facilities are improving day by day, the drop-off arrangements show no sign of advance.

The mid-term parking area is also for drop-off. It offers a 20-minute free facility with a bus ride to close by the entrance, including luggage. The £3 charge for taxi and private car entails a 200m uphill uncovered walk to the entrance, not pleasant on a wet day. The multi-storey car park is little better, whilst passengers are initially under cover there are no travellators, and you still have to descend in a lift to ground level and join everyone on the walk to departures.

Haifa Many Israeli shopping malls become food markets on Fridays, or on specific weekdays. Grand Canyon Mall in Haifa is one such example, turning its third floor into a gourmet food paradise packed with vendors selling cakes, cheeses, wines, preserves and homestyle cooked dishes on Thursdays and Fridays.

Golan Heights Bental Mountain Picnic One of the best places in all of Israel to picnic is the Golan Heights. This plateau produces some of the crispest apples and juiciest berries in the country, and is also a known mountain getaway for escaping the brutal Israeli heat, which makes it a perfect hotspot for Israeli wineries as well. Parshat Ki Tetze In a nutshell Ki Tetze In this week’s sedra, Ki Tetze, Moses continues to speak to the people and tell them how the Torah demands that they live their lives.

For example, he tells them that if a woman is captured during battle, one may marry her but needs to wait a month before doing so in

News Bites AN EARLY PURIM JOKE? A driver who was dressed up as Batman was pulled over by police in Canada.

A police car with flashing lights stopped the Batmobile and asked the driver to get out of the vehicle which looked entirely the same as the original. It was impossible to identify the driver as he was in full Batman costume covering his face too.

The police spoke to the Batman lookalike and he then drove off.

The entire incidence was recorded by another driver on the busy motorway. In the video footage, the other driver can be heard to say “What, she let him go? Awesome!”

CHEESECAKE DISASTER The mother of a five year old has just moved to a new block of flats in a city. She has found it difficult to meet other mothers but happened to meet another mum in the lifts one day. The lady invited her to attend a mum and baby group which she frequented.

herself! Her parents allowed her to keep one Barbie doll but her punishment was that all the remaining toys were returned to Amazon unwrapped in the boxes in which they had arrived! She has also been banned from using the internet for a month!

Of Ghosts and Gold

PART 3

Recap: Kayla and Mia are trapped in a farmhouse. The farmer and his wife are convinced they have been struck with an ancient curse and that there is a ghost. Disbelieving, the girls attempt to flee, trapped, they turn around to see a ghost.

We were shaking so hard we put the leaves to shame.

There, floating above the cows, was a white transparent figure.

A ghost.

We screamed and grabbed onto each other. I grabbed an apple that was lying around and lobbed it straight at ... er, it. It went straight through. We screamed again.

The figure reared and laughed spookily. We screamed again. It laughed again.

Mia screamed but I looked straight at it and said, “look, whaddya want?!”

The ghost was totally unfazed and just stared at us. It was dressed in Victorian period rags, its hair was dishevelled, its face disfigured.

“Don’t antagonise the scary attacking ghost!” Mia shrilled.

“Why not?” She just glared at me.

Then it attacked.

Turning red and orange, it grew and plunged straight for us. We ducked

andAndAnd- we opened our eyes and it was gone.

Mia shrieked.

“Ok, my ears are hurting, what now?” This time there was ghostly writing dripping off the walls, onto the floor, LEAVE “Hang on….”

“No, let’s go, I want nothing to do with ghosts and gold and creepy messages in blood, all I wanted to do was fix my car!”

“Wait, a ghost whose messages look suspiciously like WordArt? I’ll bet…”

Sure enough, there was a projector above the door of the barn. Nestled in the doorframe, it was hardly noticeable.

“Why?” “I bet there’s some brother who’s more tech savvy than our technophobe, drama king farmer MacDonald

here and he wants the money that was dug up. So he used the curse as the basis for a highly elaborate ruse” There was the sound of slow clapping from the shadows.

A tall, thin suspicious character in a dark, well cut suit stepped out from behind the cows, a move few could pull off well, this guy had finesse. His face was pale, wearing a thin, drooping moustache and a sardonic smirk.

He could hardly have shouted evil bad guy more if he’d tried.

“So, you have uncovered my brilliant plan.” Oh, I was wrong, he’d tried and succeeded.

“You must be the evil brother.”

“I prefer ( he paused at this point, these guys seriously had a drama problem!) devious,” he said carefully.

“Naturally, since you have discovered my little ruse, I shall have to eliminate you. Of course, this merely plays into my hands because with your deaths, the final hammer blow shall be struck! My idiotic brother will be panic stricken, he’ll hand over the gold and probably sell the farm for pittance.”

I waited for the evil laugh, but apparently even he had standards.

He raised a gun –

“Not so fast, brother.” He spat the word, showering me and Mia in the process.

“I’m not as foolish as I make out.”

“Oh, more foolish then?” The farmer growled and raised the rifle.

“It appears we have a stalemate.”

Yeah, and we were right in the middle of it.

Kramer Olympic dream in the balance

BY DAVID SAFFER Israeli equestrian rider Dan Kramer could miss the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo because he will not compete at the world championships next month as they take place on Yom Kippur.

Kramer informed Israel’s horseracing federation he will not ride in South Carolina after deciding to put his faith before sport.

Israel is hoping to send a team to the Olympic Games for the first time in its history.

The team comprises Kramer and naturalized citizens Daniel Bluman of Colombia, Alberto Michen of Mexico, and Americans Ashley Bond and Daniel Goldstein.

But with Kramer’s absence Israel’s chances of making the Olympics will be hit as the world championships are one of the top-ranking tournaments.

The equestrian federation are aware of the championship dates but failed to act until a riding fan informed Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev of the teams’ intentions to compete on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

“I decided not to participate in the upcoming world championships in the United States, because the competition is taking place on Yom Kippur,” Kramer noted.

“I want to honour this day as well as the Israeli public and Jewish Diaspora.”

Ofer Bustan heads up the sports

section in the ministry and approached Kenny Lalo, chairman of the riding association, about whether they had tried to call off the competition.

Eli Haham, Director General of the riding federation, offered a guarded response.

“The International Association of Sport Riding has announced that this is a complex issue on the technical and organisational level, but it is examining the appeal positively and is trying to do everything possible to find a suitable solution,” he noted.

Belgium-based Kramer however will not compete on Yom Kippur and confirmed to Lalo his decision in writing.

“I think that it will be a serious mistake in judgment to compete on this holy day, despite the sporting implications of not participating in such a major and important competition that will hurt my international score and my, and my horse’s, chances of reaching the Olympics,” he said.

“As far as I’m concerned, this is not a matter of personal choice.”

He added, “As a Jewish athlete and a proud Israeli, I do not intend to offend the sensitivities of the Israeli public and the Jewish world in general and compete on our holiest day.

“I do not intend to compete ‘below the radar,’ as has been hinted to me more than once in my conversations with key people in the

federation, because I believe that every performance by an Israeli team should be a heart-warming affair that fills every Israeli and Jew with pride.”

Kramer has been critical of the federation’s efforts about his predicament and feels their efforts to try postpone the competition took too long.

He also sought advice from Chief Rabbi Dovid Lau who backed his decision to honour Yom Kippur.

Rabbi Lau has been in touch with Sports Minister Regev in an attempt to get a change of date for South Carolina event.

The ‘Yom Kippur’ debate has divided Kramer’s riding teammates.

Bluman feels Kramer, through Israeli media, has tried to get

public recognition with “inaccurate accusations.”

“Religion and tradition are personal things, an office or federation does not have to determine how we spend our Yom Kippur, we are free to decide,” he wrote in an internal memo.

“This is a championship that takes place once every four years and serves as a prelude to the Olympics.

“We cannot put our careers, our lives, in the hands of a ministerial decision.”

Bond, in the same memo, said competing was a personal decision made by everyone independently.

“The riders even offered to compete and then go to synagogue,” he added.

Lalo is clinging to a change of date but accepts time is running out.

“It is possible that the riders will compete but not as Israel’s national team,” he said.

“The decision whether to compete or not is up to the federation to decide, that is, the federation is allowed to determine that its athletes will not compete on Yom Kippur,” added Haham.

Kramer’s actions are in stark contrast to the Israeli national football team who are set to play Northern Ireland before Rosh Hashonah is out next month.

The match kicks off at 7.45pm, some 30 minutes before the end of the festival.

The curse of the third season. A sight all too familiar with fans of ‘the Special One’, Jose Mourinho.

Whether it’s at Inter Milan, Real Madrid or Chelsea, The Portuguese manager has never stayed at a club longer than 3 years and this is looking like the case with Manchester United.

Brighton beat The Red Devils with a relatively comfortable 3-2 victory which left captain and rumoured transfer target for Barcelona, Paul Pogba saying United didn’t show the right attitude at the Amex Stadium.

Glenn Murray flicked in the opener before Shane Duffy stroked home two minutes later. Romelu Lukaku halved the deficit 11 minutes before the break, rising unmarked to nod in Luke Shaw’s ball, but Pascal Gross converted a penalty after a foul by Eric Bailly.

Pogba also scored from the spot deep in second-half stoppage time - but it was not enough to deny Brighton a famous win.

Mourinho warned in the summer that his side faced “a difficult season” if they did not strengthen before the transfer window closed.

He had highlighted his team’s defence as an area that needed bolstering, but deadline day passed without any new arrivals.

United fans weren’t that worried as last season they had the second best defence in the whole League.

But on Sunday, Mourinho’s concerns were laid bare here, with his defence caught out on a number of occasions by Brighton’s quick movement.

I think the lack of fresh faces in the centre back area will really dampen United’s hopes of challenging for the title and with most of their rivals winning comfortably over the weekend, top 4 could be out of their grasp which would ultimately leave Mourinho with the sack.

Marcos Alonso’s late strike settled a chaotic Premier League classic in Chelsea’s favour after Arsenal fought back from two goals down and threatened to earn a point at Stamford Bridge.

Maurizio Sarri’s side had built a two-goal advantage inside the first 20 minutes as Pedro turned in Alonso’s cross and Alvaro Morata added another seconds after Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot over from close range. Henrikh Mkhitaryan wasted a similar opportunity before pulling one back with a low shot that Chelsea’s new £71m keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga should have saved, before Alex Iwobi put the Gunners on level terms. Aubameyang and Iwobi missed further chances before half-time and Chelsea controlled the second half, with Alonso sweeping in substitute Eden Hazard’s cross nine minutes from time to make it successive wins for Sarri and two defeats for new Arsenal

manager Unai Emery.

Yet, although Chelsea secured the victory on this occasion, for me, I thought Arsenal were by far the better team and the reason why they lost was down to the fact that they weren’t clinical enough during the game. Emery looked devastated at the final whistle and, of course, no points from his first two (admittedly very tough) games is hardly a flying start.But, there were things to encourage him. Teenager Matteo Guendouzi looks a real prospect and Emery will be delighted by his team’s resolve after they went two goals behind to work their way back into the game. Coupled with the fact that if manager Unai Emery can sort out the finishing problem after Aubameyang and Mkhitaryian both missed golden chances, then I see no reason as to why The Gunners can’t challenge for the top 4 and secure Champions League football after missing out in the past 2 seasons.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said Sergio Aguero is in the best condition he has seen him in, after the striker scored a superb hat-trick in a thumping win over Huddersfield.

Aguero opened the scoring in the first half before adding two goals after the break to complete his thirteenth career hat-trick and ninth in the Premier League. Only Alan Shearer, with 11, has scored more at that level.

But the most interesting point about this game was the fact that Guardiola decided to make a number of changes and leave out Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker. This is because due to the fact that many teams have started playing very defensively against City, Pep has taken out all the players with pace and gone with players with quick feet who can operate in small spaces.

The result was Huddersfield could barely get the ball off their hosts as City skilfully crafted opportunities from the limited space they had. To win the game 6-1 against a defensive minded team shows how The Sky Blues now have a couple of ways they can successfully approach a game - an ominous sign for the rest of the Premier League.

In other results, Harry Kane finally scored his first Premier League goal in August as Tottenham maintained their 100% start to the season with a 3-1 victory over newly promoted Fulham. Everton held off a resurgent Southampton side to mark Marco Silva’s first competitive home match as Toffees boss with a 2-1 victory at Goodison Park.

Finally, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he was “not interested in sending a statement” to his side’s

title rivals after a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace gave them a second successive Premier League win.

Dire is the only way to describe Newcastle’s lacklustre performance against a very poor Cardiff City side.

With the game tied 0-0 in the 90th minute, the Magpies were awarded a penalty deep into added time when Bluebirds captain Sean Morrison handled a cross from Yoshinori Muto. In all my years of watching Match Of The Day, I rarely remember seeing Newcastle being awarded a penalty, let alone it being to secure victory in the last minute of the game.

So when Kennedy, the left winger, stood up to take the penalty, I was baffled. Why would you not let the striker, the one who’s meant to score the goals take it, surely that makes the most sense? But then I remembered The Toon’s striker is Joselu, so I was left with no choice but to accept Kennedy as the chosen penalty taker.

When the Brazilian missed from 12 yards out, I was in agony. Not only over the fact that Newcastle had essentially just dropped 2 points, but also over the fact that there is no one on that pitch who I could trust to bang it straight into the net from the penalty kick.

With Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in their next 3 games, I would advise any Newcastle fan to maybe start supporting Gateshead instead.
