Welcome to 2013, a New Year filled with new events that will determine the rise or fall of our civilization. Now more than ever, the scent of change is in the air, swirling, dancing, lifting us to greater heights. With that in mind we forge ahead, filled with wonder and excitement, in celebration of those who are pushing us forward. In the fashion sphere alone, a shufing of designers has breathed new life into stately establishments. Most notable among the changes, Alexander Wang is taking the reins at Balenciaga; Hedi Slimane added some rock-and-roll edge to Saint Laurent; and Raf Simons, whose lovely, light-as-air ready-to-wear debut at Dior is pictured here. Collectively, the public figures who populate this issue—hailing from the realms of fashion, art, music, and pop culture—are making the world a more compelling place with their boundless determination and savvy. Those two adjectives describe our cover star to a T. The pretty and precocious Kristen Stewart not only oozes talent but also possesses an inherent beauty that cannot be denied—especially as captured by the incomparable Inez and Vinoodh. In talking with us, the actress reveals her tactics for surviving constant media scrutiny while establishing her young self (she is all of 22) as both a person and a professional. Her confession that she’s “stronger than ever” promises even bigger and better projects in the years to come. Indeed, youthful energy permeates these pages. Ingénues Bella Heathcote and Hailee Steinfeld model Spring’s newest fashions, and the wise-cracking Lena Dunham—set your DVR, she kicks of her second season of Girls on January 13—comfortably spent the day in a Calvin Klein leotard for her shoot with Terry Richardson. Elsewhere in the issue, Mario Testino flexes his photographic muscles with a shoot featuring the world’s new supermodels. The setting for such a glamorous scene? None other than Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, where the Peruvian has been enjoying his first exhibition in the United States, a commemoration of his latest tome of colorful photos, In Your Face. The idea of giving back is perhaps the greatest motivator of all. In an ode of selflessness, Inez and Vinoodh ofer a portfolio of charitable stars who donned pieces of TENTHOUSANDTHINGS jewelry, all of which will be on the auction block starting February 6 on CharityBuzz.com. Proceeds will be donated to each celeb’s preferred cause. The TTT series, as it has come to be known in this ofce, is the brainchild of the brand’s founders, David Rees and Ron Anderson, who wanted to celebrate their twentieth anniversary in true style. Head to the website to support this important initiative—and possibly snag a sparkly new addition to your Spring wardrobe. Ms. V

Aussie actress Bella Heathcote possesses a sweet demeanor and modelesque good looks. Just don’t challenge her to a drinking game

When the bright-eyed and impossibly gorgeous 24-year-old actress Bella Heathcote made her red carpet debut in a splashy Gucci dress at the Cannes Film Festival last May, many assumed it was her Cinderella moment. Here was this fresh-faced new thing from Australia who got lucky and scored a part in cult filmmaker Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, as the love interest of none other than Johnny Depp. But to hear Heathcote tell it, the experience was hardly a fairy tale. “Oh, yeah, I remember that,” she laughs with a hearty twang. “The Gucci people didn’t want me to move of the carpet because they wanted a shot of the dress, but the photographers wanted me to get the hell out of the way because they wanted pictures of the famous people. It was hysterical and humiliating, which is how I think it should be.” It’s a relief to hear some self-deprecation in her voice, to ofset the beautiful-girl cliché. (Burton actually cast Bella after he saw her runway-caliber looks in a magazine.) Not only that, but she’s fun! Asked to define Australian culture, she deadpans: “We like to drink.” And she’s discreet. When pressed—and I mean really pressed—on some juicy Johnny Depp gossip, she’ll only profess that “he has a dark sense of humor, he’s really generous, he’s really normal, and he doesn’t have any pretensions. Look, he’s just a nice guy, okay?” Heathcote grew up in Melbourne with a lawyer father who was hardly impressed by filmmaking and not much interested in his daughter making a vocation of it. “So I did a year of college, and he was happy I tried,” she sighs. Then she was of, making a few independent films and doing a brief stint on the cult TV program Neighbours. “That was a good learning experience. It’s a soap opera, so it’s a pace I’d never seen. One take, two takes if you’re lucky. They churn it out.” She played Amanda, a school bully. “That’s a tip: if you’re going to be on a soap opera, be the baddie. It was hilarious.” Her road to Hollywood was a quick one, helped in no small part by a compatriot that she never had the chance to meet. In 2010, she won the Heath Ledger Scholarship, a fund for Australian performers set up after the actor’s death, in 2008. She credits the scholarship—for which she applied online, first sending in her reel and then meeting with a jury panel—with igniting her career: an unofcial benefit of the contest is the opportunity to network with nearly every Aussie in the business. The prize was $10,000 and a round-trip ticket from Sydney to L.A. “But, luckily,” she says, “I never had to use the return leg.” This month she stars in Not Fade Away, which, ironically, she filmed before Dark Shadows. (Only in Hollywood can time be so warped that an independent film takes twice as long to finish as a big-budget production.) The film is set in the 1960s, and Bella plays Grace, the pretty, popular girl living in a New Jersey suburb who dates the football player in high school but falls for the moody, broody rocker when they graduate and their real lives begin. “I was drawn to her humanity,” she says. “She has real reactions to real things.” When the actress first got to L.A., she went out for everything that came up. “But this was the first script that stood out, and kept getting better and better with every read. It was a part I really wanted.” What she liked most about it was the feeling of wonderment. It’s a tale of adolescence and the bafing process of growing up. “It makes you feel anxious, a bit anxious, unresolved. And that’s what growing up feels like.” When we talk, Heathcote is prepping herself for the film’s promotion, a media ritual she would have liked a little more practice with back in her Dark Shadows days. She remembers another stop on the Dark Shadows premiere circuit, the one in London, where she had to trot down a neverending red carpet in a Pucci minidress, facing her own likeness on a jumbo screen, in the middle of Leicester Square. “I felt like I was in Hunger Games. It was surreal and so full on, and I was in a state of shock,” she says. “And then I had a drink. Remember, I’m Australian.” Derek BlasBerg

Friends and collaborators Adam Green and Binki Shapiro are soulfully intertwined, even if their debut joint efort is decidedly not for lovers “Don’t use this album as an instruction book for love,” says Brooklyn-based artist, singer, and man-about-town Adam Green of his latest release with former Little Joy front woman Binki Shapiro. “It’s about a dysfunctional romance—one that ends when the nighttime stops bleeding, or when daytime starts to clot and coagulate.” The duo’s biting and deceptively harmonic rumination on a broken, decaying relationship is a folksy and somewhat old-fashioned sound with a late ’60s pop feel—at times reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood’s psychedelic-infused kitch pop duets. Shapiro’s sleepy, smoky vocals and

Green’s periodic plucking are the perfect vehicle for slightly off-kilter lyrics, including those about a “pity, pity love.” The pair’s own relationship couldn’t be farther from the one their output envisions. “Adam and I sort of met randomly at a Mexican restaurant while our friends were having a midday margarita here in L.A.,” explains the waifish, Jane Birkin-esque Shapiro, from her home in Encino, California. “We just became best friends—he’s like a brother to me now.” Years later, Green joined Shapiro’s band, Little Joy, on tour in Brazil. Then last fall the 26-year-old singer-songwriter received a text from Green as she was boarding a plane, asking if she wanted to make an album together. “Writing the first song was a bit awkward, but once we got over that, we just sort of let the music guide us,” says Shapiro of their collaborative process. “We met every night at his apartment in New York, or mine—writing, shooting the shit, going out to eat, then writing again—and by the end we had something straightforward and maybe a little threatening, and we were bonded in a way that we weren’t before.” ASHLEY SIMPSON

New York–based artist Kaws blows up with a hometown float at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade Here I am wondering what this balloon is going to look like the next day when it’s in the parade. Companion is a character I first created as a toy thirteen years ago and have lived with every day since, but I know 99.9 percent of the people viewing the parade will have no idea what it is. One thing I feel certain of is that it’s the only character in the parade without a narrative. Macy’s contacted me over two years ago out of the blue to take part in their Thanksgiving Day parade. I immediately said yes. I wanted to create a balloon that’s representative of our times and how confusing and stressful it all can be. kaws 28

Public Art Fund presents Tatzu Nishi to the masses with temporary New York work Discovering Columbus This project centers on the Columbus statue, which has stood at the top of the column in Columbus Circle in New York City for 120 years. The idea was to build a living room around the monument, 70 feet above the ground, and invite the public inside. It’s a project to change people’s perspectives—moving something from outside to inside and making something public into something domestic. This is my first major project in the United States, and it’s especially exciting that it’s in New York, which is a center of contemporary art. More than 100,000 came to experience the piece. tatzu nishi 30

Goldin Girl “I was looking at cars, thinking about the speed and the materials they use for the interiors. It became a world of inspiration to me and everyone I work with,” said designer Louise Goldin backstage at her New York debut in September, understandably weary yet glowing from the buzz of her standout Spring collection. The British expat, known for her bold, eye-catching knits, returned to the runway after a brief hiatus, drawing from her body-con sensibility and British daring, to great efect. The collection was a cool mix of sexy dresses in fresh spring colors (cerulean, white, safron) with interesting but not too complicated patchwork in separates and layers. “New York is a great place to show for me now. I like the spirit. London is its own thing, but I’m here now.” The scene at the show was pleasantly insidery, with NY fashion Brits on hand to cheer for a hometown favorite. Until the arrival of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, that is. The duo brought the requisite flurry of camera snaps and whiplash turns from the surrounding rows—the kind of PR coup some designers hope for, but of which Goldin remained adorably unaware. The soft-spoken Norwegian—who has held top design positions at Yves Saint Laurent, Guy Laroche, and fashion-favorite Phi—is now bringing his streamlined sensibilities to Diesel Black Gold. Melbostad’s ofcial return was marked with a Pre-Fall presentation at the end of last year, with a more formal show to take place during New York fashion week, in February. “I like the irreverent attitude of the brand, and I am inspired by its brave and bold approach,” says the designer whose domination of svelte, European fit dovetails perfectly with the brand’s sexy, fun-loving aesthetic. “Diesel has very global and forward-thinking concepts for its products. This thinking shows in every aspect of the company and has created a unique and inspiring environment to work in.” cb 32

Novel Romance Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Lancôme has partnered with designer Olympia Le-Tan (she of the ever-popular book clutches that regularly sell out on Net-a-Porter and the like) on a run of 100 minaudières with hand-stitched mise en abyme covers—each of which takes 18 hours to make—touting the beauty behemoth’s signature lippy. Le-Tan, a voracious reader with an afnity for pinup-girl style, personally picked the box’s contents. The six Rouge in Love lipsticks and equally bright Vernis in Love varnishes are both available in updated shades, in honor of each line’s first anniversary. “I think Rouge in Love is a very good book title, it’s very romantic,” says Le-Tan, who cited vintage Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar covers as her design inspiration. “I want this to be used as a makeup box, and you can also take the things out and use it as a bag for evening.” What’s not to love? sarah cristobal

The list of adjectives one could apply to the annual Victoria’s Secret show is long: sexy, seductive, tantalizing, fabulous. But for Nadja Swarovski, head of the family dynasty, one of them sticks out: sparkling. Fair enough, as this year’s show—held this past fall at New York City’s Lexington Armory—utilized more than one million Swarovski Elements crystals, to adorn everything from the costumes and lingerie to the stilettos and accessories. The most staggering piece in the new catwalk lineup? A life-size bedazzled boa constrictor. Without a doubt, the Victoria’s Secret and Swarovski teams had much to celebrate. The show marked their tenth year of collaborating, with each camp continuing to inspire the other. “The design team pushes the level of creative to even greater heights with each show, and we are always thrilled to see how the crystal inspires their designs,” she explains. The show opened with Adriana Lima, one of the most famous Angels, stomping out in a barely-there suit of black lace lingerie, having birthed her second child only a few months before. (Every woman in the audience must have felt a twinge of envy, and what the gentlemen were thinking could easily be guessed.) Following Lima came several more of high fashion’s sexiest females, including Karlie Kloss, Candice Swanepoel, Joan Smalls, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Cara Delevingne, in a series of looks that ranged from Old Hollywood (think 1940s gowns, lavishly embellished) to Delevingne’s cutie candy striper. The show’s pièce de résistance—a 10th anniversary edition of the brand’s trademark wings—fanned out in glittery glory on the back of beauty Cameron Russell. The live entertainment produced star wattage of its own, with performances from Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, and Rihanna. To steal a lyric from the latter, the show shined bright like a diamond—with a little help from Swarovski, of course. Derek blasberg

Jurassic Jeweler Monique Péan, fashion’s favorite eco-friendly jewelry designer, is an unapologetic paleontology nerd. “Growing up, I was never as interested in jewelry as I was in dinosaurs and fossils,” explains the D.C. native and U Penn–educated business whiz. The fascination persists to this day: her most prized possession is a fossilized stegosaurus hip bone, scored while scouring the market for new materials. So it stands to reason that when she started her line of sustainable jewelry in 2006, the designer went straight for a cache of fossilized woolly mammoths, dating from anywhere between 10 and 150 thousand years ago. The material has since become her signature. This spring, Péan is stepping even further back in time— about 300 million years—using petrified dinosaur bone from the Jurassic era. “I love the idea that you can take something that old and make it into something new again,” she says. Sourced from the Colorado plains, the only area in the world where agatized dinosaur bone can be found, these specimens contain minerals and impurities built up over millennia, which give the bones their unusual hues—from lavender to yellow, black, rust, and gray—and repeating geometric motifs. “The patterns and colors are like nature’s abstract art. I think of a Rothko,” Péan says of their organic beauty. But pretty as fossils may be, they can also be tricky to work with. First, obtaining the artifacts is no easy feat: Péan works with a pair of paleontologists who contact her when they find small agatized bone fragments (larger, intact specimens generally go to museums), and then plunking down the money is risky. “You take a chance on each purchase, because you don’t know exactly what you’ll find inside,” explains the designer. Once a sale is completed, processing the stones presents the next challenge: dinosaur fossils tend to be soft, brittle, and difcult to cut. “Yeah, we broke a lot of them,” Péan deadpans. But the end result, a cut, polished, and diamond pavé–ringed fossil—a wearable slice of ancient history—is a piece of cocktail hour–worthy glamour, to say the least. Joanna roDger

Jeanesis Jeans mavens 7 For All Mankind have gone back in time, to the year 2000 to be exact, and brought back the pants that put them on the map. “Vintage 7,” a new collection out this month, is based on the original production and washes that the brand introduced in the last decade, but incorporates some style updates. Denim-philes will appreciate that each pair goes through a series of 20 handcraft treatments, totaling 16 man-hours. cb

“I have realized that you can close yourself of to life if you put walls up, but it’s a difcult thing. You can’t see over, people can’t see in, and you also can’t see out. So I’ve gotten quite comfortable with just being unafraid.”—Kristen Stewart

risten Stewart is nothing short of gracious. Upon walking into this interview a few minutes behind schedule, she profers a hug and an ofer to “stay until you get everything you need.” There are no publicists, handlers, ringleaders, or beefcake bodyguards hanging around, and she is dressed in 7 for All Mankind jeans and Converse kicks. For the world’s highest-earning actress—last year she dethroned Sarah Jessica Parker and Angelina Jolie at the top of the Forbes list, to the tune of $34.5 million—the lack of pretense is really quite remarkable…not that this is her favorite part of the job. “I really love people,” she says as she hops into a chair and folds her tiny frame like origami. “You can’t not as an actor. It’s just strange meeting someone and going, Okay, you start at square one and I will try and make up for what you already think you know about me.” The 10,000-pound gorilla in the room is of course that people—present company included—think they know a lot: how much she earns, whom she dates, and even more intimate details. Since her Twilight reign began, digging into Stewart’s personal life has become a bit of a blood sport. (To wit, a gossip rag recently splashed a photo of her with presumed boyfriend Robert Pattinson and announced that she’s pregnant. She’s not.) The Star Wars-esque emotional force field that she instinctually activates for self-preservation is palpable. In this instance, her armor is enhanced by pulled-back hair, glasses, and an oversize bomber jacket that serves as a kind of cocoon. There’s a slightly feral air to her presence—she’s jumpy and prone to pacing—but all the anxiety is kind of endearing. She’s young and excitable, and having weathered the highs and lows of 2012, she claims to feel stronger than ever before. “I have realized that you can close yourself off to life if you put walls up, but it’s a difficult thing,” she says. “You can’t see over, people can’t see in, and you also can’t see out. So I’ve gotten quite comfortable with just being unafraid. I keep saying the same thing: it’s not about being fearless but really just embracing the fears and using them.” It’s of little surprise then that she describes her latest project—the indie adaptation of On the Road—as “a fucking amazing experience.” Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel as seen through the lens of director Walter Salles features Stewart as the shy and somewhat guileless 16-year-old bride Marylou. Her husband, Dean Moriarty (brilliantly portrayed by Garrett Hedlund), takes her on a wild ride as they crisscross the country, living to the fullest and then some. The sparkling cast also includes Sam Riley, as Sal; Tom Sturridge, as Carlo; and Kirsten Dunst, as Camille. Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, and Terrance Howard make stellar cameos. “I would have done anything, I would have played any part,” says Stewart. “Marylou is remarkable because she’s got a tough core. When you’re a teenager, a year can be crippling to maneuver through. You’re just out there questioning things, and so to be completely okay with that and not think that there’s anything wrong with you, that’s something I’ve recently understood. I’m 22. Marylou started this whole thing when she was 15.” When it comes to the Beat Generation’s radical ideology of choosing the life you want to live versus succumbing to bourgeois expectations, Marylou is the perfect pilgrim. She expertly rolls and smokes joints, dances as if possessed by a divine spirit, carouses late into the night, and engages in threesomes with her beloved and his best friend, even efficiently issuing synchronized hand jobs while driving cross-country. But to hear Stewart tell it, the part is only slightly more provocative than some of her previous roles. “It’s a pretty fucking odd thing to want to pretend to be another person,” she says, “and then have a lot of other people who watch you do that. You have this experience of reading something, and if you don’t bring it to life, you’re basically deleting it. Every day of shooting you’re depriving the world of having that. The responsibility is amazing. “Until you really get to know the woman behind the character, it’s difcult to connect the dots,” she continues. “I’m a contemporary, sensitive, normal girl, and it’s difcult to try and

empathize with someone who seems to have a lack of empathy. She seems a bit callous in the book. She’s literally the farthest…I have never encountered a person that had their nerves so fucking close to the surface.” Any freshman psych student could draw parallels between the fictional Marylou’s demeanor and Stewart’s protective façade. Delicate and darling, the two of them are also tough as hell. But whether the actress realizes it or not, her defensive posture only makes her more beguiling, by revealing how susceptible she is underneath it all. “Oh, I could have worked with her all week, or done a movie with her,” says Inez van Lamsweerde, who with her partner, Vinoodh Matadin, photographed Stewart for this cover story a short while after compromising photos of the actress with her Snow White and the Hunstman director had surfaced. “We worked with her for a Gap campaign in 2006, and even back then she was extremely intelligent and questioned everything. You could say anything to her and she would respond in a wonderful way. She is that delicate blend of masculine and vulnerable. She is unbelievably beautiful, not just on the outside but also in her being. She gets right in, there is no in between.” The admiration is mutual. “When you find yourself with people like that, you can really thrive,” says Stewart of Inez and Vinoodh. “It was fun. I would follow them wherever they wanted to go. I had a really good time that day, I was kind of shocked by that.” Photo shoots and fashion in general have become an increasingly important part of Stewart’s evolution. Together with longtime stylist Tara Swennen, she concocts looks that consistently become much-ballyhooed fodder for the style blogs. Former Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquière, who hired Stewart to be the face of his Florabotanica fragrance, says that “she is never scared of strong fashion choices, which is very exceptional for an actress. For me she is a true heroine. The fact that we had the opportunity to work on an artistic adventure together is fantastic.” Fashion, of course, is a huge component of moviemaking, an art to which Stewart was drawn from a young age. She grew up on sets; her parents, Jules and John, still work as a script supervisor and stage manager, respectively. (“I started doing the job because I wanted adults to talk to me,” says Stewart. “I wanted to be on set in a different way than just hanging around.”) After starring in bit parts in film and television, she landed the role of Jodie Foster’s daughter in Panic Room. The Oscar-winner was impressed by the chutzpah and dedication of her younger costar, and has remained a fairy godmother of sorts as she learns to navigate the topsy-turvy world of Tinseltown. Stewart was even handpicked to announce that Foster would receive the Cecil B. DeMille award at this year’s Golden Globes. On the Road is perhaps the perfect segue to the new challenges on which Stewart is about to embark. There are rumors of a Snow White sequel, but with the Twilight chapter closed, one surmises she is ready to start anew, and she is clearly bracing herself for the next thing—in this case a comedy called Focus, in which she plays a young vixen who catches the eye of a veteran grifter in the form of Ben Afeck. “The script is really fun and I love the writers and directors, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa,” she says. Stewart has never conquered the Great White Way, but she’d be up for it. (“Theater is a completely diferent way of working, but, yeah, I would be very much down.”) She also tosses out the idea of being part of an ensemble cast that would ideally include fellow actresses whose work she greatly admires. (How many starlets do you hear saying that these days?) “There are so many cool girls out there!” she says, name-checking Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, and her best friend, Dakota Fanning. “I am not closed of to anything right now,” she says, smiling. “That is what I was saying about not having any more walls up. I don’t want to deprive myself of any bit of life.” By the end of our conversation, Stewart is a bit more relaxed—hair down, glasses of, bomber jacket removed—and cracking jokes aplenty. That nervousness she was experiencing before has apparently been channeled. Like a true Beatnik, she is embracing life as it comes.

hen celebrities buy homes, they typically do so in grand fashion, a giant apartment on Central Park West or a mansion somewhere in the Hollywood Hills. Lena Dunham, on the other hand, bought a modest one-bedroom in Brooklyn Heights. And as she tells it, one of her favorite moments since becoming famous was when a tabloid published a piece about celebrity real estate in which her closing price was reported. “It was this cheesy thing where they listed the prices people bought homes for,” Dunham recalls. “And it said something like, ‘Nicole Richie 5.3 million dollars, Lena Dunham 430 thousand dollars.’ It was my proudest New York real estate moment.” How could she not laugh about it, or turn it into something of a joke? For one, it didn’t make her look extravagant, when she was all of 25 and had just made it big. For another, she’s a comedienne, and the stock-in-trade of a funny-woman is always appearing to be a little less fabulous than the leading females around which she orbits. At this very moment, Dunham is sporting a pixie cut she’s been rocking for the past few months and sitting at a front table at Tea & Sympathy, sharing a rhubarb crumble with me. The place was her suggestion, a perennial favorite in a city that is turning into a nightmare of gentrification. “It’s crowded, no one’s respectful to you, and I love it,” she says. Dunham is in a bit of a rush, as of late she’s incredibly busy. She’s finishing up editing the second season of Girls, the runaway hit on HBO that she created and stars in, which returns to the air January 13. She’s been traveling constantly. There’s a memoir in the works (Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned), for which Random House has reportedly paid $3.7 million. And she’s due at dinner in an hour, with her mother and new boyfriend, whom she’d prefer not to leave alone with one another. Time is the one luxury success deprives you of. But keep talking to Dunham for a few more minutes and it becomes readily apparent that she’s still the same delightfully self-deprecating person she has always been, albeit with increasingly celebrity-like accoutrements. Here is Dunham with characteristic frankness talking about the onslaught of free clothes that has recently arrived: “I cannot deny it, and I cannot get over it,” she says. “And they actually send them in my size. No one’s being an asshole and sending them to me in a 4. They’re sending me clothes, they fit, and what people should know is that I always wear them. Somehow even if I wouldn’t have bought it, the fact that it was free and my grandma’s depression-era mentality make me think it is the most beautiful thing I ever owned, and I wear it for several days straight.” And here is Dunham talking about her recent friendship on Twitter with none other than Taylor Swift: “We have D.M.’ed. I’m a really big fan. She started following me, and here’s how you find out Taylor Swift is following you. You start hearing from all the insane Taylor Swift fans that are like ‘If Taylor Swift loves you I love you.’ So I sent her a message. I was like, ‘I just want to let you know that your albums have gotten me through a lot of very hard times.’ When I tweeted that her new album was amazing, every one of my Twitter followers was like, ‘I so hope that you’re joking.’ But I have no interest in liking anything ironically. If I wanted to be ironic, I’d grow a mustache.”

And here she is discussing a recent trip she took to India with her mom: “I hated India. I know you’re not allowed to hate India. But I did. I wasn’t happy. And I felt crazy. I’m a hypochondriac. I saw too many puppies that I thought needed me. So my mom and I got in a big fight and I left India. Early.” About three years ago, at the age of 23, Dunham debuted her first film, Tiny Furniture, at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, where it won the prize for Best Narrative Feature. It told the story of a woman who returns home from college, moves back in with her parents, and embarks on a romance with a man who does not fall for her. She’s whip-smart yet totally unsure of what to do with her life, not invisible to boys, but not the prom queen either. Soon afterward, IFC bought the film. And when it was released that November, raves followed in nearly every publication that counts. Portraying a character who was more than loosely based on herself (her mother, Laurie Simmons, a well-known artist and photographer here in New York, actually played her mother on-screen), the movie also resonated with Judd Apatow, the producer and director behind The Forty Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. He hired Dunham to craft an HBO show about four women, just out of college, living in Brooklyn and stumbling through young adulthood in a post-boom economy. On one episode of Girls, Dunham’s character finds out she has HPV and goes on a search to find out who gave it to her. On another, she loses a job after her boss sexually harasses her and she ofers to sleep with him. (He explains that he loves his wife and merely wanted to fondle her.) Again the critics swooned, finding in Dunham’s character a female lead who actually rings true, a representation of all sorts of women who are struggling to figure out what to do with their lives and coming up short with men. “It’s so trite,” Dunham says, “but I think so much of my worldview was formed by feeling isolated. If you go to school in New York, if you go to Saint Ann’s or Dalton, because there aren’t kids being shoved into lockers in the same way, you’re expected not to have that isolating adolescence. But from kindergarten onward, I was like, I don’t know what to do with people. First I was a tiny little kid and I didn’t have friends, and then I was a chubby teenager and I didn’t have friends. It was just this sensation that I didn’t know how to connect.” From time to time Dunham runs into former Saint Ann’s classmates and the image she has of herself as the freak who sat alone in the corner is rarely the one they reflect back to her. Still, she says, “I think we can all agree with the idea that the beautiful girls that get all the boys get written about. They don’t usually write.” Some of them, of course, wind up in Hollywood. But Dunham is increasingly fine with the fact that she’s diferent from them. “Now, meeting actresses who such a big part of their job is about what they look like, I feel so lucky to be freed from that prison. I ate cake for breakfast on the day of the Emmys, I ate cake for dinner, my workout didn’t require Spanx, and I still feel like I looked better than people expected me to. It was amazing. I could feel the envy of every woman in the Sunset Tower.” And on some level she no doubt is.
