For 24 years, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) has been ensuring access to justice for people experiencing poverty, providing life-changing legal services that stabilize families and create lasting impact. As New Jersey’s statewide leader in pro bono, VLJ helps those with unmet civil legal needs parents and children facing eviction, veterans burdened by debt, survivors of human trafficking, and others confronting complex legal battles have a fighting chance at justice.
But today, that fight is growing harder. Vital services are facing funding cuts. The rule of law is being tested. Communities historically underrepresented and under-resourced are at greater risk than ever. Despite being one of the most powerful tools for breaking cycles of poverty, civil legal aid remains the least funded human service in the United States. Access to justice isn’t just an ideal. It’s a necessity.
The return on investment is undeniable: studies have shown that for every $1 donated to civil legal services providers like VLJ, $5-7 in economic benefits are returned to local communities. And with pro bono attorneys contributing an average of $2 million in free legal services to VLJ each year, we are transforming lives throughout the state impacting over 4,500 people annually
