FOREWORD BY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR After the founding of Port of Rijeka Authority on 28 May 1996, a new modern era began when the Rijeka port area became a port of special national interest in the Republic of Croatia.

Port of Rijeka Authority, from its foundation until today, has harbored a strong and consistent ambition to continuously grow and develop the port infrastructure in order to strengthen its competitive position in the region and reach the status of an efficient, safe, and sustainable seaport in accordance with European standards. Therefore, in the last period that began on the eve of the 21st century, rapid development of logistics, sustainable transport, international security and surveillance, environmental protection, and the development of intermodal connections with the hinterland became new “port” topics.

In order to explain the changes that have occurred in the way Port of Rijeka conducts business, it should be recalled that, back then, a new state institution took on the role of managing and concern over the use and development of the Rijeka port area, which initially included the Rijeka Sušak basin, Bakar and Raša basin, and later, in 2003, the port area under the management of Port of Rijeka Authority became connected to the terminal for liquid cargo in Omišalj.

The mentioned year 2003 is particularly important for Port of Rijeka Authority. The signing of the Loan agreement between the Republic of Croatia, Harbor Master´s office, Croatian Roads, Croatian Highways and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development marks a new beginning which has enabled the implementation of one of the most complex development project in the history of Port of Rijeka called Rijeka Gateway Project, without which it would not have been possible to fully solve the problem of the insufficient capacity of the former port infrastructure.

Ten years later, in the middle of 2013, Port of Rijeka Authority was presented with a new opportunity that emerged in the moment when the

Republic of Croatia became a full member of the European Union. Port of Rijeka thereby became the first port of call for the European Union in the northern Adriatic, and the Rijeka traffic route became an intersection of traffic coming from the Far East towards Central Europe, which confirmed the undeniable role of Port of Rijeka in both the national and European transportation strategy. Port of Rijeka also became a core port, i.e. a key port on the European Mediterranean corridor allowing for the improvement of transportation links with the hinterland, especially by rail. The European transportation network offers better transportation solutions that will further impact the development of the port infrastructure and port modernization. The possibility of receiving funds for co-financing developmental and transportation infrastructure projects from the available European funds has been recognized by Port of Rijeka Authority, which has used all available resources both in the pre-accession programs and the structural funds. This promotes the realization of capital projects of Port of Rijeka and achieves significant momentum needed to continue the accelerated infrastructure development.

The past twenty years of Port of Rijeka Authority have been marked by an extremely difficult post-war period, which was followed by the changes in worldwide port technologies. We should not forget the year 2009 when the effects of the global economic crisis affected the port business. In particular, the impact was visible through a sudden drop in the total turnover, followed by a period of a steady traffic growth.

It is certainly necessary to look back at all the difficult and challenging times, but also at a number of possibilities that have been successfully and diligently explored. First and foremost, all the staff members should be thanked who have made the greatest contribution in the implementation of the projects - those that are active today, as well as those who are no longer working with us but have given their contribution over the past twenty years.

All the current and previous members and presidents of the Governing Council of the Port of Rijeka Authority should be thanked for all the sometimes difficult, but successfully implemented decisions.

The ideal geo-transport position of Rijeka, which greatly shortened the land route to the markets of developed European countries, did not present an important strategic advantage any more because with the application of new technologies natural and geographical conditions, essential for the port development, could be compensated with technical procedures.

PORT OF RIJEKA AUTHORITY BEGINNINGS In 1999, Port of Rijeka Authority in cooperation with the shipping company “Lošinjska plovidba - Brodarstvo j.s.c.” and a grant from the Ministry of Maritime Trade, Aviation and Communication of the Republic of Croatia launched the first Feeder service, which marked the beginning of the revitalization process of the container traffic in the Republic of Croatia.

The Feeder service set out form the Croatian ports of Rijeka and Ploče towards the ports Gioia Tauro (Italy) and Malta. Since this service showed sustainability and accuracy, it attracted numerous users. Along with the logistical support from users, competitive prices, and a high service quality in traffic routes, the container terminal also ensured two commercial weeks of Feeder service (CMA-CGM and UFS) and two weeks of calls for the so-called mother boards (ZIM line and Lloyd Triestino). With time other global container operators such as Hapag Lloyd, Evergreen, Maersk Sealand, UASC, and others expressed their trust in the Feeder service.

Container traffic of the Feeder service marked an annual increase by 60%, and from the initial 6,000 TEU it reached 30,000 TEU in 2003. The first ship that launched the feeder service was called Lipa.

Necessary procedures were made to eliminate the existing shortcomings, create conditions for capital financial investments, and improve the development of the port area. Changes that occurred in the transport of good are most evident in the increase of efficiency, faster cargo handling, and shortened waiting periods for transhipments in the port.

PORT OF RIJEKA AUTHORITY FIRST CONCESSION HOLDERS The newly founded state institution took over the role of the management and concern over the utilization, granting concessions, and development of the Port of Rijeka region, which initially included the Rijeka and Sušak basin, Bakar and Raša, and later on the Omišalj terminal for liquid cargo. This ensured the control over the activities of private operators based on the practices of other global ports due to the fact that business plans and their implementation are an integral part of concession agreements.

The first operator which was awarded the so-called “priority concession” – because of the historical heritage, continuation of business and continuity of providing port services, preservation of social peace and jobs – became the company Luka Rijeka j.s.c., which offered services of transshipment, handling, and storage of general and bulk cargo. In addition to specific types of concessions, the former public company had, so to speak, another “privilege” and that is the very name “Port of Rijeka.”

On 11 September 2001, the concessionaire “Luka Rijeka j.s.c.” established a daughter company Jadranska vrata j.s.c., whose ownership structure was expanded by the strategic partner ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services Inc.), headquartered in Manila, the Philippines. ICTSI became the majority shareholder with 51% of shares and Jadranska vrata continued its operations on the container terminal Brajdica for which they were given a thirty-year concession (by the year 2041). Along with Jadranska vrata, the name Adriatic Gate Container Terminal came into use.

Besides Luka Rijeka j.s.c., which provides services on terminals for general and bulk cargo, cattle and wood in Rijeka, Bakar and Raša, the largest concessionaires in the area managed by the port of Rijeka are also JANAF j.s.c. in Omišalj, Jadranska vrata j.s.c. on Brajdica, Exportdrvo j.s.c. and Šerif export-import j.s.c. on the terminal for wood in Raša.

In addition to concessions for the supply of port services and use of the port infrastructure and superstructure, Port of Rijeka Authority grants concessions and supports other activities that are closely connected with basic activities such as: port towing, fumigation and pest control, control of the quantity and quality of goods, ships supply, fuel delivery to ships, washing of ship equipment, handling solid and liquid waste, mooring and unmooring of ships and the like. In May 2016, there were eighty concessions of this sort in the port area.

PORT OF RIJEKA AUTHORITY DEVELOPMENT SPURT The main objectives of Port of Rijeka Authority, besides managing the port area (placed on four separate locations: Rijeka, Bakar, Omišalj, and Raša in Istria), are the strategic development planning and modernization of Port of Rijeka. A unique and motivating goal was to strengthen the competitiveness of Port of Rijeka and the Rijeka economy as a whole in order for the port to achieve high efficiency and the status of a key hub-port for connecting the Far East with Central European markets.

This would further increase the efficiency by continuous improvement, which positively affects the development of the city, the region, and the entire country.

First changes had a positive impact on business operations, which marked the beginning and successful completion of invaluable projects: Samsung Project – equipping the container terminal and the bulk cargo terminal, and one of the most comprehensive projects in the recent history of the Rijeka port known under the name Rijeka Traffic Route Redevelopment Project, i.e. Rijeka Gateway Project.

DEVELOPMENT RIJEKA GATEWAY PROJECT Rijeka Gateway is historically the most important project of the overall revitalization of the coastal area of Rijeka, which was initiated by the Croatian Government in cooperation with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). Despite the negative circumstances of the world market policy, Rijeka Gateway Project is being successfully implemented with the goal of modernizing the port of Rijeka.

Based on the Guarantee Agreement signed on 12 July 2003 between the Republic of Croatia and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, on the one hand, and the Loan Agreement between Port of Rijeka, Croatian Highways as the borrower and IBRD, on the other, funds were provided for the implementation of the project. This completely solved the problems of insufficient capacity of the existing port terminals, separation of the port and the city road traffic, and it created a number of attractive coastal areas for public life.

Project components were initiated which accelerated the construction and modernization of the port area, improved its financial condition, upgraded the port/urban infrastructure, and improved the environmental conditions in the port of Rijeka. Also, more complex construction works, reconstructions of terminals and berths, operational, road, and railway areas were carried out, as well as other interventions. The continuation of the Rijeka Gateway program, aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the city of Rijeka as a port city that is strategically situated on the Mediterranean Corridor (ex Vb), one of the major TEN-T transport routes, was achieved with the Loan Agreement that was signed on 17 April 2009. This project was called “Rijeka Gateway Project II” or “RGP II.” The total value of the port component of the projects Rijeka Gateway I and II (RGP I and II) amounts to 186.8 million EUR, of which 145 million EUR relates to funds from the World Bank (IBRD), while 41.8 million EUR are the resources from the Croatian national budget. The total value of RGP I and II was reduced from the original 199 million EUR to 186.8 million

EUR, as Port of Rijeka Authority successfully applied for a grant from the available European Fund (CEF) to finance part of the railway infrastructure at the Brajdica container terminal. Funds, which have to this day been used for the port component of the project, have amounted to 111.6 million EUR, accounting for 60% of the total value of the project.

Since its establishment until 2015, Port of Rijeka has invested more than 200 million HRK of its own funds in the construction and maintenance of port infrastructure facilities, while the total investment of Port of Rijeka, including the funding from the Croatian national budget and loans from international financial institutions, were in this same period around 1.47 billion HRK (190 million EUR).

The first projects to be fully accomplished from the World Bank loan were the reconstruction of the Vienna pier and the construction of a new road bridge over the Rijeka breakwater, which preceded the construction of the maritime passenger terminal. In addition, purposeless warehouses in the areas Delta and Porto Baroš were destroyed in order to redevelop the port area, and a social program and means of providing for redundant workers in Luka Rijeka j.s.c. were created.

IDEAL POSITION The Republic of Croatia is situated on two corridors of the basic transport network: the Mediterranean corridor and the RhineDanube corridor. The Mediterranean corridor connects the south of the Iberian Peninsula, passes through the Spanish and French Mediterranean coast, then through the Alps in northern Italy, then enters the Republic of Slovenia and continues on to the HungarianUkrainian border. This is a road and railway corridor, and forms an integral part of the Rijeka-Zagreb-Budapest route. The basic transport network is part of the comprehensive transport network, which includes a complete transportation infrastructure of the European Union.

DEVELOPMENT CONSTRUCTION OF THE MARITIME PASSENGER TERMINAL The maritime passenger terminal was put into use on 6 October 2009.

Located at the root of the Rijeka breakwater, it was designed to improve passenger services in the domestic and international maritime passenger traffic. The construction of the terminal building, reconstruction of the operational shore, and a complete reconstruction of the ground and walkways in the area of mooring were not the only reasons for the reconstruction. The connecting road raised the quality level of maritime passenger terminal and increased the flow of vehicles in this part of the passenger port. An important part of the passenger terminal comprises a well-equipped port control center for monitoring ship traffic, which enables both supervision of their movement and safety, as well as prevention of sea pollution.

Preliminary work in the area of the construction site began on 21 August 2014. Works related to the creation of submarine dike were completed at the end of 2015, while the continuation of work is carried out by building and protecting the underwater embankments, production of handlers and their installation into their final positions.

The second phase envisages the extension of the Terminal to the total pier length of 680 m, which would achieve a capacity of 400,000 TEU per year in the first phase, i.e. 650,000 TEU per year once the terminal is built in its entirety. The installation of STS container cranes is planned with 22, or if necessary, 23 lines for the seaside.

The construction of the new container terminal on the Zagreb pier is convincingly the biggest investment in transportation infrastructure within the area of Rijeka and one of the largest in Croatia. The Croatian Government also recognized the importance of the container terminal construction on the Zagreb shore when it declared the “Zagreb Pier Container terminal� project in May 2014 a strategic project of the

Along with other components including the expansion of the Brajdica container terminal and the construction of the new container terminal on the Zagreb pier, the Delta and Porto Baroš areas represent an urban component whose aim is that the current port activities, primarily the manipulation of general cargo, is moved away from the port area located in the city center to another suitable location, and that a residential, commercial, and recreational center are developed in this attractive area.

On 9 November 2011, a two-day conference “Open Days” was held, an event that brought together the world’s leading developers and representatives of local experts, as well as national, regional, and local institutions in order to address the issues of basic infrastructure, legal issues, and urban solutions in order to thoroughly prepare the international tender for concession grants, i.e. for the selection of investors-developers-concessionaires for the repurposing/development of the Delta and Porto Baroš port areas into public commercial areas along the coast.

In 2013, Port of Rijeka Authority, the City of Rijeka and the Rijeka Architects Society announced the results of the tender for drafting urban-architectural designs for the Delta and Porto Baroš areas. 56 projects (of which 24 foreign) were submitted at the public, international, open, and anonymous survey competition for designing preliminary urban and architectural solutions. On 17 November 2013, the jury unanimously adopted the decision to award three equal first prizes to the projects of architectural offices Studio 3LHD Ltd. in Zagreb, PORTICUS Ltd. DEVELOPMENT ID CARDS AND VIDEO SURVEILLANCE The project included the implementation of video surveillance systems at the basin perimeter and in the northeastern part of Brajdica. The project aimed to increase the safety of the port area under the management of Port of Rijeka Authority and to provide better control of facilities access, as well as a possibility of events reconstruction by using video and database access control. So far, the system of access control to the basins Rijeka, Sušak, Bakar and Raša has been established. Video surveillance of the entrance is set in these locations, as well as a control center.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE STATE ROADS D-403 AND D-404 One of the important goals of the Rijeka traffic route is the construction of the state roads D 403 and D 404, which allow the connection of the western (D 403) and eastern (D 404) parts of the Rijeka basin to the Croatian highway network.

Road D-404 connects the Rijeka city center from Delta with the eastern part of the Rijeka bypass and allows connection to the highway towards Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Dalmatia. The route comprises two tunnels, one bridge, and five viaducts, an exit to a shopping center and two exits for pedestrians. The state road was opened for use in May 2011.

DEVELOPMENT INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDS After the Republic of Croatia became a full EU member in July 2013, Port of Rijeka Authority continued to use EU funds by participating in new projects as a lead partner or by actively preparing and applying new proposals to the calls announced by the European Commission.

Soon, Port of Rijeka Authority became the first Croatian port in history to lead a European project of great importance for the ports of the northern Adriatic. One of the projects being developed through the work of the North Adriatic Ports Association (NAPA) is “Development of multi-modal connectivity ports in the northern Adriatic and their successful integration into a central network - NAPA study.” Port of Rijeka Authority is the head of the project that is supported by the European Union with 50% of funding in the amount of 2.8 million EUR. “NAPA studies” refer to the project of reconstruction development of the Brajdica railway station, and the development of the construction project of the Rijeka railway freight station in the context of a strategic project of the new container terminal on the Zagreb pier.

DEVELOPMENT TRAFFIC CONNECTIONS - DEVELOPMENT The greatest challenge in the Rijeka traffic route is the necessary development of the railway network, which is an important factor in the modern transportation of goods. This is why it is not surprising that the future of the port of Rijeka after the modernization of its terminals is turning towards the construction of a railway station. Therefore, upon the revised procurement plan under the Rijeka Gateway Project it was decided that the railway station for containers and service activities would partly be built within the existing container terminal and partly on the present Brajdica railway station.

For this purpose, the concessionaire Jadranska vrata j.s.c. has developed a design concept for which it has obtained a location permit. The project for the reconstruction of the Rijeka-Brajdica railway station includes five functional units for which five building permits will be obtained. These will be a track reconstruction (construction works), contact network reconstruction (electrical works), installation of a signaling and security telecommunications system, construction of tunnels and dead end tracks in the tunnel with all the necessary equipment.

The main objective of the project is to raise the efficiency of the Brajdica container terminal in shipping containers by rail, and, in essence, this refers to the construction of new and the expansion of the existing Brajdica tracks in order to form container block-trains towards the hinterland. The mentioned assets will be realized in the first phase of the project, whereas additional tracks will be arranged in a relatively short period. During the construction process, it is planned to organize the construction site in a way that works do not affect the efficiency of the terminal. The final part of the project includes plans to build a dead end railway tunnel on Brajdica, which should be completed in 2019.

PORT OPERATIONS TERMINALS Port terminals are equipped for handling all types of cargo at six different locations, including specialized terminals for containers, general cargo, and timber in the Sušak basin, as well as general cargo, grains, phosphate, and fruits in the Rijeka basin. Bulk and ro-ro terminals are located in the Bakar Bay, the terminal for oil and petroleum products in the Omišalj Bay, while general cargo, livestock, and wood are handled in the Raša basin in Istria.

TERMINAL FOR OIL AND OIL DERIVATIVES The port basin covers a part of the Omišalj Bay and the Adriatic pipeline terminal. The JANAF system was built as an international crude oil transportation system from the port and the Omišalj terminal to domestic and foreign refineries in Eastern and Central Europe. The designed capacity of the pipeline amounts 34 million tons of oil a year (MTG), and the installed one 20 MTG. JANAF has the capacity to store oil in the amount of 1,540,000 m3 and 202,000 m3 for the storage of petroleum products.

The terminal includes two berths with a depth of 30 m, which can take VLCC tankers. At each berth there are four unloading arms for crude oil and two for oil products with a loading capacity of 5,000 m3/h each, and 20,000 m3/h of oil a berth. Tankers can load and unload oil 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The terminal is operated by a concessionaire, company JANAF j.s.c.

PORT OPERATIONS BRAJDICA CONTAINER TERMINAL Jadranska vrata j.s.c./Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) is a concessionaire which provides primarily services related to the handling and storage of containers at the Brajdica container terminal, but also additional services such as CFS services (Container Freight Station - filling and emptying containers).

TERMINAL FOR GENERAL CARGO The terminal is located in the area of the old port core of Rijeka. It has 11 berths, it is equipped with a considerable number of shore cranes with a capacity of 5-84 tons, 4 mobile cranes with the capacity of 40-63 tons.

It has the ability to accommodate vessels up to 30,000 DWT. Adequate storage facilities, 6-100 t of truck capacity, a large number of forklift trucks, tractors, trailers, etc., as well as specialized personnel allow the terminal simultaneous operation of all ships moored in the port. The terminal is designed for transshipment and storage of general cargo, but it also includes specialized sections for handling paper, wood, metal products, dangerous cargo, heavy cargo, frozen and conditioned foods, as well as facilities for final processing. The terminal is operated by a concessionaire, company Luka Rijeka j.s.c.

PORT OPERATIONS GRAIN TERMINAL The grain terminal is equipped for handling and storing wheat, soy, and other grains and oilseeds. Located in the Rijeka basin, it has an operational pier that can accommodate vessels up to 60,000 DWT, while a transfer bridge has the capacity of 400 t/h. The terminal comprises modern equipment for drying, ventilation, weighing, and pest and rodent control. The terminal is operated by a concessionaire, company Luka Rijeka j.s.c.

BULK TERMINAL The bulk cargo terminal is equipped for handling and storage of iron ore, coal, and other bulk cargo. Its special value lies in the fact that it possesses an operational pier with an 18-meter-depth of the sea along the coast, which allows ships up to 150,000 DWT. The total annual capacity amounts 4,000,000 tons. The terminal is operated by a concessionaire, company Luka Rijeka j.s.c.

PORT OPERATIONS MARITIME PASSENGER TERMINAL The maritime passenger terminal in the Rijeka breakwater is a project that was launched in order to improve passenger services in the domestic and international port passenger traffic. It also contributes to a more beautiful townscape and enables citizens of Rijeka a city view from the sea thanks to the promenade along the entire pier.

The works included removing the old dock of the shipyard Viktor Lenac, demolishing the old hall, offices, and workshops in the area of the former shipyard on Rijeka breakwater and the construction of a new road bridge.

A port passenger terminal building was built with all the necessary infrastructure, as well as a 260-meter-long pedestrian zone m, a 200 meterlong long quay wall with a floating ramp for unloading/loading of vehicles on the ship was reconstructed, the track was repaired, and a new water, sewage system and electric grid supply was installed.

The next stage included intensified work on the infrastructure adaptation and enrichment of content by adding more power connectors on the Karolina RijeÄ?ka pier and the Boduli waterfront. The service has been significantly improved with the introduction of wireless Internet. With the acquisition of new benches and trashcans, marked bicycle paths on the pier and a joint project with the company Autotrolej j.s.c., facilities have been enriched with the supply of electric vehicles and the first ten public bicycles. Old dysfunctional port cranes at the Rijeka breakwater, which represent a valuable industrial heritage, have been restored and illuminated. There are also three containers near the cranes specially procured and installed for the purpose of public associations creative activities.

PORT OPERATIONS DEVELOPMENT OF THE PASSENGER PORT Action plan for the development of cruise tourism - according to the recommendations of the Action Plan for Rijeka’s development as a tourist destination with a focus on cruise tourism, in 2014, after all the activities and planning done in the previous years, Port of Rijeka Authority began with the implementation of concrete actions aimed at defining areas for receiving cruise ships, devising a model of destination management, and sales and marketing destinations.

In cooperation with the City of Rijeka and the Rijeka Tourist Board a committee was founded that has carried out numerous activities. Three possible accommodations of ships of various sizes were defined - the passenger terminal located on the Rijeka breakwater, anchor, and the occasional berth on the west coast at the Brajdica container terminal near the city center, thus providing mooring of largest cruise ships.

The aforementioned was also achieved with the concessionaire at the Brajdica container terminal – Jadranska vrata j.s.c./AGCT. Since 2015, first multiple cruise arrivals have been recorded, while the announcement of cruisers of various shipping companies is increasing each year.

Port of Rijeka also represents a starting/finishing port for smaller tourist boats for more than ten years - sailboats on their cruise along the Croatian Adriatic coast whose numbers are increasing from year to year.

Action plan for the development of yachting - a great interest in Rijeka as a port for mega yachts has been noticed, thus it has been started with intensive work to facilitate the ability of mooring a larger number of vessels by setting up a pontoon passenger port along the Boduli waterfront. The production and installation of pontoons in the passenger port envisioned the construction of a pontoon pier, which is made up of four 20-meter-long pontoons. The pier is tied to the massive coastal construction of the Boduli breakwater. The necessary electricity and water supply network was also built, enabling a better service.

Setting the pontoons is a part of the revitalization project of the

passenger port that is to be continued. The project enriches the area from the Boduli breakwater to the Karolina Riječka pier on one side and the root of the breakwater on the other side. Pontoons have also been made on the west side of the Adamić pier, stone vases and benches have been built, and the coastal edge has been planted with greenery. The whole area is covered with a high wireless Internet connection.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION Strengthening the competitiveness of Port of Rijeka, improvement of the transport infrastructure, cooperation with the local community and environment, creating a port policy and long-term development strategy, concerns for the environment, safety and business responsibility are just some of the more important goals of international cooperation of the Port of Rijeka in a series of projects, which are conducted in collaboration with international professional associations. Membership in international organizations allows the Port of Rijeka an equal access to strategic and promotional activities that ensure an increased competitiveness and representation on the international market. Insight into European projects in which the association is involved also provides a good root position for the preparation of our own projects that can be financed from EU funds.

For the City of Rijeka it is particularly significant that it is located on the European corridor after being named one of the basic, fundamental ports – the so-called core port on the map of a comprehensive European transport network TEN-T. Port of Rijeka Authority is actively involved in the Meditteranean Core Network Forum and the Working Group of Ports that are located on that same corridor. The goal is to remove bottlenecks and improve the previously established infrastructure projects within the basic network in the transport sector of the European Union.

PORT DIVERSITY Port of Diversity - Rijeka - European Capital of Culture Port of Rijeka as a project partner, has participated in the application for candidacy of the City of Rijeka for the European Capital of Culture.

In March 2016, the City of Rijeka was declared the European Capital of Culture for 2020, and the very name “Port of Diversity” speaks for the impact and importance of the development of the port for its immediate community. In this project, Port of Rijeka participates in a program called “Sweet and Salty” in cooperation with local partners such as the Society of Architects of Rijeka, Centre for Industrial Heritage at the University of Rijeka, civil associations Drugo more and Platforma 9,81. A number of regulations govern the obligations of ports that are open for international public transport in terms of the environmental protection in port areas. A system of environmental management has been established which coincides with the requirements of environmental monitoring during the implementation of the Rijeka Gateway Project.

A suitable and appropriate environmental management system is created with the implementation of the project including the monitoring of specific indicators to measure the condition of the environment, as well as informing the public about the condition of the environment.

Sampling and analysis of marine sediments was carried out at ten locations of the port of Rijeka and Sušak in cooperation with the Institute “Ruđer Bošković.” Results of the conducted research and analyses were used in all areas of use of the port area in such a way that the monitoring of the sea and environment protection is carried out on a regular basis.
