Romania used to be a country of temperate climate or so the meteorologists used to say. There used to be four seasons, none to harsh or extreme and because this land is rich and diverse, it has been a joy to experience it any time during the year, be it spring, summer, autumn or winter. Each season came in many different colors and temperatures and sometimes cheekily surprising you. This year the pleasantly warm October and beginning of November, we expect, suddenly may give way to a frozen winter. Still, winter is unmistakably approaching and it will soon quiet all nature except for the city and its people. Let’s hope for a gentle winter, but we have a saying “Long Autumn, Hard Winter!” Until the time when the city will grow quiet there are some more pleasures to experience – the end-Autumn Fests, both in Bucharest Downtown and in the surroundings of the city. We use to eat grilled mutton pastrami and must (fresh grapes juice), starting with the Harvest Day and until after the feast of Saint Demetrius, the patron saint of Bucharest. And we invite you to taste it also. You could also try walking in Cismigiu or Herastrau Parks on one breezy morning or around the main boulevards, from Piata Unirii to Piata Victoriei in the evening and you will understand, once more perhaps, the amazing powers of transformation that nature still has. Bucharest, the Capital of Romania, is a large and busy city where far too often cars and people overcrowd in the streets, shops and restaurants. This can be unpleasant and stressful but it might also be a sign of the fact that Romanians live a bit better than they used to, that they are learning to enjoy life more as time goes by.

DEPARTMENTS 2. NEWS, EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS 36. THE LAST WORD

Long Autumn, Hard Winter!

So Easy Being Green… The long summer we faced is finaly at an end but we have to take a look around us at this drastic climate change. Nowhere is more appropriate than in a country such as Romania, with its industrial past giving way to a modern future. But who is going to pay for this seeming dream? We need to look no further than the EU’s green tax credits. For Romania and its business climate GREEN is the wave of the future – a Green Future. With over 6 million hectares of commercially exploitable forest, according to EU figures, this forestation corresponds to 25% of Romania’s entire surface area. Romania has a long lasting tradition and a vast experience in forestry map drawing. The first forest map appeared in the late 1860’s. During the 1940’s a complete forest map of Romania at 1:800000 scale has been published, and later, between 1950’s-60’s a new forestry map at 1:200000 scale was elaborated. Recently (1996), a new forest map was issued to cover the distribution of main forest areas in Romania. This highly detailed map underlined the ecological specificity and biodiversity of Romanian forests and plays the role of a fundamental work in the implementation of an ecological policy for sustainable forest management. The basis of these credits begin with ETAP, the EU’s Environmental Technologies Action Plan - which began in Romania with the Promotion of Sustainable Forestry in Germany and Romania. ETAP says which are initiatives by two completely different European Member States. The methods are said to show the way ahead for the promotion of sustainable forestry. It is Germany which makes use of the public procurement lever while Romania chooses tax incentives. The difference of these two approaches is telling as to the state and condition of their various industries. In studying the Romanian environmental policies, it would seem that successive government’s primary objectives in the area of EU Green Laws is to transpose current EU environmental legislation and mimic it in national legislation. It is then applied it locally – always the safest bet when a new country enters the EU. In Romania, European Council has recognized the potential for new technologies to create synergies between environmental protection and economic growth. It is a principle that has been applied to the business sector in a manner that strictly links financial advantages available to companies with environmental protection by laying down specific conditions that companies must fulfill which function to protect the environment.

Contemporary art can be created from any material that an artist can put out. If we combine art and recycling, the best! This made the Red Bull Art of Can project, activating the non-conformist artists, designers or simply enthusiastics to make true works of art using as raw material the aluminum can of Red Bull. 425 artists have joined the project, but only 50 works are exhibited in the gallery.

Vintest – The National Wine Fair of Romania October 27 to 30, Romaero, Bucharest

Romania has exceptional wines, recognized by international specialists, but not sufficiently promoted nationwide and worldwide. The lack of promotion of the wine in Romania led to a low consumption compared to beer, despite the fact that wine is on the domestic and abroad list of foods. Wine producers, importers of accessories and wine quality specialists are those who must make a common front to promote Romanian wines and to educate consumers in the spirit of tradition that Romania has in the field, to pick up the wine at the rank that deserve.

A single event that gather wine producers, distributors and manufacturers of accessories, or tourism agencies to establish bridges of communication to raise the wine sector, to educate consumers and to export a positive image of Romania in the perspective of the wine it’s a must. Vintest wishes to be the first salon devoted to the Romanian wine held to the

international criteria standard. Business promotion of the direct or related to wine activities will lead to an economic growth of this sector and hence to a growth of the society. Educating people, especially the younger generation, to engage in the promotion of Romanian products, be it wine, or wine tourism areas it’s another must of this fair.

Who are the organizers?

Launched in 2005, the International Wine Fair VINVEST soon became a center of reference for the wine sector. Vinvest managed to convince through professionalism and consistency. The eight editions organized in Timisoara have created an unprecedented way for the Romanian wine, detaching it from all other similar events in the quality of the organization, becoming the first International Exhibition of Wines from Romania to European standards. Vinvest started also the National Contest of Wines and Spirits, and after six years it has reached a milestone in the field. The same organizers are coming now in Bucharest and addresses to manufacturers and distributors of wine, to producers and distributors of equipments, materials, accessories, packaging, storage, seedlings, crop protection products, fertilizers, machinery, specific furniture, business processes analysis firms, software systems, project management, implementation consulting, support, training and advertising of wine growing, to wine organizations and professional associations, to consumers and lovers of wine, to travel agencies and tour operators and also to the restaurants, hotels, cellars. Vintest is organized on October 27-30, in Romaero, in a 2,500 square meters exhibition area, with parking, easy access to public transport, subway, bus, etc. At Vintest will be held wine tastings, launches of new range of wines, gastronomic shows, “taste” competitions, contests and sweepstakes for professional audiences, media and guests, bartending - competition for waiters and bartenders and will be presented wine tourism offers, top wines - competition organized by the associations, delicious food - contests on gastronomic themes, pastry, confectionery, wine shop – where you may purchase the wines tasted in the stands, while the library will stimulate the tasting art and the tourism (store for gastronomy, wine and wine tourism guides). Your presence at Vintest is absolutely necessary because Romania has a great potential in wines, because there is no National Wine Fair of Romania event on the market, to raise to the European standards, because the image of Romania wins from such an event, because the public in Romania needs to know the value and quality on the domestic market and for Romanian producer has invested in technology and quality and deserves to stand in the eyes of his audience. www.vintest.ro , Ph.: 0372-731-830, fax: 0372-870-579, office@vintest.ro

Green Autumn in the City 6 Bucuresti what, where, when

Romania is a country of temperate climate or so the meteorologists used to say. There used to be four seasons, none to harsh or extreme and because this land is rich and diverse, it is a joy to experience it any time during the year, be it spring, summer, autumn or winter. Each season comes in many different colors and temperatures and sometimes cheekily surprising you. This year the pleasantly warm October it would prolong its high temperatures to the beginning of November, when the sun decided it wants a last dance up into the 20C. It is beautiful and exciting, we may be quite happy with this nice weather in a city that looks more green that it’s normal, but we remember suddenly that the next is winter.

Y

ou could try walking in Cismigiu Park on one pleasant autumn day and you will understand, once more perhaps, the amazing powers of transformation that nature has. Always when I’m “in the area”, I decide to stop in Cismigiu for a walk. Here, this still enthusiastic late autumn spread joy to all its visitors. As I am walking through the oldest public garden of the capital (17 hectares) I discover always the statues with their own histories, the children playgrounds, full of joyful kids; and then, a place more isolated, as if it was especially created for the lovers; La Cetate (By the Fortress), a corner for retired persons in the first place, but for all who love board games and chess: the Corner of the Chess Players… As I continue my walk on the alleys bordered by trees, I pass near Eminescu’s spring, where people still come for water, and I reach the

main entrance of the garden from the Elisabeta Boulevard, across which the City Hall of Bucharest (now in renovation) is located and on the left, another boulevard, Schitu Magureanu, bordered by the building of Gheorghe Lazar high school, an old, high level school of the city. The sun is still mild and friendly and the park it’s beautiful, I wouldn’t want to leave anymore… I continue my walk through the nature which is continuously changing. The history of the park it’s described on an interesting panel, with the location of this park, in the age of Alexandru Ipsilanti, there was an enormous moor, called the Moor of Dura the Merchant. The current name of the park was taken over from the chief of the works – Cismigiu, who lived near by. In 1847, supervised by the Viennese landscaper Carl F.W. Meyer, the arrangement works were started, and in 1854 the official

initiation took place. The moor was transformed into a lake, in the middle of which a beautiful spring-well is located. On the alleys marked around the lake by the landscaper more than 30.000 trees were planted, from native species (maple, linden tree, fir, elm), as well as from rare species (red chestnut, sycamore tree). Also, small caves and bridges over the lake’s channels were built. To the end of the 19th century, one of the first newspaper kiosks in Bucharest was set at the main entrance in Cismigiu. Today, the restored kiosk may still be admired. A special attraction in Cismigiu is represented by the Romanian traditional restaurant built by the architect Ion Mincu and called Monte Carlo. Nowadays, the place with the terrace near the lake continues to attract many people offering season’s menu. On the side to Schitu Magureanu Boulevard a rotunda was set up, in the middle of a green space, which may still be admired today: the Roman Rondo. Officially opened in 1943, the rotunda contains stone hand-carved busts on high pedestals, rendering the faces of famous figures of culture: Mihai Eminescu, I.L. Caragiale, George Cosbuc, Ion Creanga, B.P. Hasdeu, Nicolae Balcescu, Vasile Alecsandri. On the alleys you may admire more statues, of Sister Smara, of George Panu, the Monument of French Heroes, Sissi Stefanidi Spring – a mother in deep suffering after the death of her daughter pours water with the mug. You may always be amazed by all the new information you get after a walk on the alleys of this green corner of Bucharest, even if you pass it daily! On the lake, delicate swans ignore you with their splendor… This life fragment reveals to you the eternity of this garden, where everybody feels good. You can roller skate, skateboard, relax, even sleep on a bank or you can sometimes have your future foreseen, from tickets extracted from a box by a very colourful parrot. Cismigiu is never deserted, this is the conclusion. The 8

first snowdrops, the colours of autumn, the freezing of winter and, last but not the least, the summer sun, always attract us on the alleys of this immortal garden, to visit it over and over again.

Go North, to Herastrau!

After Cismigiu Park, one of the oldest and most beautiful of Bucharest, I invite you in Herastrau, the largest park and garden of the Capital. Located in the north of the city, on an area of 110 ha, the place was, before 1930, a marshy area that would be drained during 1930-1935. Also called Carol II Park, the Herastrau was a promenade place even in the eighteenth century. Princes and their wife used to walk with the ladies of the Court suite, with a large boat on the lake, on the music accompaniment. Old Herastrau had two theaters, one for adults and one child, two exhibition halls, libraries, reading and chess arbor and a landing place for boats. For flowers lovers, each season the park turns into a paradise. Maple, poplar, willow, linden and ash, Expoflora area… are always full of color, the colours of the season. In the garden also live over 50 species of birds that delight in color and song. Herastraul it’s also renowned for the Village Museum, which includes a great variety of country houses displaced here, churches and wind- or water-mills, and inns, barns… Basically, it is a miniature universe of the Romanian village, especially for tourists. Another interesting museum you can visit in the same park is the one of the locomotives and trains, while Elizabeth Palace, the residence of the former king of Romania, is another key point with its elegance and grave architecture. If the children are with you, do not miss the fun park, full of life and youth. Mountain coaster, cars, horses, chains, swans, carting, all are to delight little ones, but also for grownups. You are an enthusiast’s skateboarding?

Do you like roller bike lanes? Herastrau has a special corner set up for that. Warning! The place makes no warranties against falls! For perfume and color, I highly recommend the Japanese Garden with its bridges over water, stones arranged in all kinds, rustic wooden benches. Statues of important people of national and international culture add to the appeal of the park. Another garden that enhances picturesque I consider to be the corner of the painting, a special place where you always find a painting or drawing exhibition. The only sailing club in Bucharest and most active of the country is still here - Yacht Club Sportul Studentesc. But what surpasses all existing beauty here is a boat ride. During autumn, in any full of warmth day, people of all ages do walk in the sun. Terraces and restaurants located on the waterfront are full. Reasons to go to this park? If those above did not convinced you, just walk up there: the old romantic air, the green, so much even now, trees like in stories, skate and the Village Museum, beautiful lake and a walk around, or the amusement park… Even in the evening the park is beautiful with its lights. At late hours you find amateur and professional rollers and bicyclers and those who choose to relax by jogging. So yes, it’s worth going through Herastrau! Beside these two important parks, the sixth sector encircle Lacul Morii (the Mill’s Lake). This accumulation lake was built in order to prevent the flooding generated by Dambovita River that enters the city through north-west. The 246 hectares water surface was built in the communist period (together with the river rectification) and have changed for today’s and tomorrow’s generation the appearance of these places. In fact, each sector of Bucharest has its big green area, but also smaller green corners, increasingly every year. Just half an hour drive from the Capital, other special places await for you…

U.S. Embassy Moved to New Chancery in Baneasa The U.S. Embassy in Bucharest opened mid-September, its new location in Bucharest at 4-6, Dr. Liviu Librescu Blvd. The 4.5 hectare site is located just north of the Baneasa mall and adjacent to beautiful Tunari Forest. The main phone numbers for the embassy remain the same. The current U.S. Embassy at 7-9, Tudor Arghezi St. closed.

The street location of the new embassy is named in honor of Dr. Liviu Librescu, a distinguished Romanian-American scientist, professor, and Holocaust survivor. During the Virginia Tech massacre in April 2007, Dr. Librescu gave his life for his students, heroically holding off the gunman to allow his students to escape.

Green Design Reduces Environmental Impact

The U.S. Department of State is a leader in the design and construction of green buildings. The new embassy meets the strict guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council and its Leadership in Energy and Design Program. The embassy’s design incorporates innovative technology to promote efficient water use and energy performance. Ecological paint and construction materials were used

to reduce heat and chemical emissions. Approximately three quarters of the site is a green space incorporating drought tolerant species to reduce water consumption. Over 200 trees such as flowering cherry, honey locust, and weeping birch have been planted. The building’s modern design emphasizes an open floor plan to promote communication and seeks to take advantage of natural light. The RATB has placed an additional stop for the 301 bus line near the embassy to encourage the use of public transportation.

Construction Employs Romanian Materials and Workers

In accordance with U.S. law, the building was designed and constructed by a U.S. company, American International Contractors. Several prominent Romanian contractors

and construction firms, such as Bog’Art, Sommering, Apolodor, CamServ, MasterBuild, Green Shop, Alusystem, NM Construct, Lafarge, Schindler-Romania helped to build the new embassy. Up to 500 Romanians worked daily on the new embassy with an impeccable safety record, directly contributing USD 60 million to the Romanian economy and employing 1,500 Romanian specialists and workers overall.

Construction Safety Record

Romanian construction companies and employees embraced a very strict safety plan working 2.2 million labor hours without a major injury. All workers were trained on the use of protective devices and followed the safety program with support from their construction companies. The safety results on this project surpassed the average for the U.S. Construction Industry. The Romanian Association for Occupational Health and Safety recognized Bog’Art with a Best Practices in Health & Safety award during a recent conference.

Artwork Emphasizes Shared Values

The embassy will feature paintings, photography and sculpture by Romanian and American artists reflecting the strong bonds of friendship between our countries. The atrium features a mural called “Drafts and Open Windows,” a project of the Art in Embassies program that is a collaboration between U.S. artist Maggie Michael and Romanian artists. Being ever since her childhood years very fond of painting and drawing, a passion that would later focus her gift towards garment illustration, the pursue of a formal education in arts was an understood step for young fashion designer Diana Nita. After graduating the Nicolae Tonitza Art High-School, Diana turned towards the Faculty of Decorative Arts and Design at the National University of Arts, an academic institution

where she would find a loose and dreamy world in which she could better develop, as she confesses. The atmosphere of creativity, dare, seeking and relaxation, particular to an Art campus is among the things she is grateful for as she recalls her formal education, deepened by a Master program in Fashion at the same academic institution. Along the Art studies’ syllabus, any student wishes to gather experience, as by each step taken in

materializing a collection he would receive great knowledge, unequaled by any course. From this perspective, Diana was among the lucky few, as her creativity and vision helped her make her breakthrough at the first edition of the Cluj Fashion Week, where she would learn some valuable lessons when sketches transformed into appreciated garments. For Diana, this step was the confirmation of a dream came true, as she would complete her

knowledge and get closer to the true work of a designer. Before drawing a sketch, she seeks a connection to the Universe, the each perceived dimension, as the challenge of a futuristic vision becomes her greatest inspiration. This continuous search for what the surrounding space has got to give concretes itself into a signature style through which Diana tries to induce the thought of what future might bring. Garments created by her carry a message of detaching one’s self from the plain daily existence and meditate on our role in the Universe and our possible future. This perspective is reflected in a brilliant introduction of a sportswear aura to couture, into a futuristic appearance strengthened by vivid contrasts such as silver or grey and orange. The women that wear Diana Nita garments can be seen as modern amazons, that appreciates the mix between style and mobility. Her approach was somehow announced by her graduation collection, which evoked the daring style of Andre Courreges, who started a craze in the late ‘60es with his psychedelic prints and spatial-inspired lines. This unique creative vision that reaches serious and perhaps intimidating concepts analyzed by philosophy, esoteric and science also, carries the daily life as a source of inspiration. Diana’s vanguard aesthetics is in fact an interpretation of her states of mind, the wonderful people she encounters and of everything that reaches her soul and spirit. As she is touched by the beauty that stands before her eyes, she enjoys by traveling a greater inspiration that is captured in each drawing or painting. She confesses she feels connected to nature and its fascinating flora and fauna and more than that, she believes in a liaison between our surrounding environment and the act of creation, a bond that generates ideas and aesthetics. www.bucurestiwww.ro

Member of an Arts’ Devoted Family

Growing up in an artistic environment, as the daughter of a glass sculpture, accessories designer Romana Topescu manifested a deep bond with the act of creation even from a young age. Refining this gift in an art high school, she turned towards the Faculty of Graphic Design at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Looking back, she is grateful for the strictness found in this academic institution, a valuable feature that will lead students to a greater attention paid to education, formal or not. The following step in her professional training brought her to Milan, a modern cradle of creativity, where she graduated a Visual Design master program at the Scuola Politecnica di Design. This bond she enjoyed with art has leaded her first towards advertising but after she found in jewelry design a true form of expressing her creativity. Beginning with a passion followed by creative experiments, curiosity and research, Romana’s designer career gained consistency after participating at exhibitions and fairs for some years. Even so, with wisdom and modesty, Romana is still considering herself a somehow debuting designer, as she views the long path that her career will face. Following Her daring and different style helped her mark important steps in her career as she got to work alongside Maria Lucia Hohan, a famous Romanian designer that has earned international recognition and highly-appreciated fashion stylist Laura Vargalui. This experience helped her explore a wider horizon in the fashion industry, an advantage that strengthened her courage to start on her own. Receiving the support of critics and independent bloggers, Diana gained notoriety which later transformed into appreciation. After an attempt to open a shop in Cocor, Diana is now waiting for her clientele in her workshop, a place where one can also find customized garments. A great challenge that had broaden her creativity into other directions was approaching bridal wear, a segment on which a designer standing through Diana’s artistic vision can hardly adapt. Another predictable and admirable step in a designer’ career is the approach of the accessories segment by offering customized items to her clientele. A very pleasing surprise that gave Diana the confidence to seize for an international career was finding many customers from abroad that showed interest in her designs. Regarding such an opportunity, Diana expressed her support for all young designers but highlights the fact that they would find wider perspectives abroad. Looking forward to the development of her career, Diana is wisely considering the normal course of this process, but among her future project, with which she will delight those touched by art’s beauty and depth is organizing a concept exhibition. Her creations can be admired and purchased on her personal websites www.diananita.com and http:// diananita.tumblr.com/ . 12

a plan, and believing in hard work and in a strong implication in her activity, which will bring exposure as a consequence, she doesn’t believe in the idea of turning points. After gaining this professional experience through her presence at international fairs and exhibitions, she doesn’t see creating a name as a designer a difficult task. The true challenge, as she confesses, is positioning and defining this name is an amorphous mass of vintage, hand made and design items, while confronting with a poor visual education coming from the targeted public. Respecting the rules that govern art, regarding composition, rhythm and harmony, Romana’s jewelry carry the same story found beyond artworks. “There’s a fine borderline between design and art, established somehow by the functionality value that can disappear for example, when we talk about haute couture”, she mentions. Romana considers the importance between the certain compatibility of a piece of jewelry and the personality and mood of the wearer, otherwise one would look ridiculous regardless of the accessory’s appearance. Viewing an accessory as another type of communication support, she admits that these items complete or intensify a side of your personality, by transmitting your mood. This personal feature of jewelry that she respects has lead her to the decision of gathering

in all things that come across their sights, Romana finds inspiration in everything that surrounds her, believing that all that matters is being open and ready to receive it. “I’m inspired by what I found around me, by the micro- and macro-cosmos, by the fluidity of movement, in the organic side of material and in my sketch notebook”. Being very attracted by arts and design, she also enjoys reading, traveling and meet enchanting people, finding a source of inspiration in the wisdom given by this experience. Besides design, she feels close to all arts, visual, cinematography, theatrical or of any type. Romana is now looking forward to offer her collections is an art and design gallery located on Icoanei Street. She will reveal the gallery launch date on her website. Until then, her marvelous accessories can be admired and purchased on her personal website www. her work considering moods and sources of inspiration and not on a seasonal base. Even though she finds that her jewelry don’t carry a message by themselves, leaving the wearer send one through it, she confesses with modesty that her accessories respect values proper to each artwork, such as chromatics, contrast, volumes, etc. Still, by looking at her creations, one will think of the unexplored miracles of nature, as her work induces a certain feeling of vitality, being very often described as carrying an organic dimension. Aspiring and succeeding in offering unique designs, by following a controlled fluidity as a technique and by using an atypical palette of materials that include plastic, glazed

paper, semiprecious stones, coral and glass. Of those, the main support is plastic, a great challenge for many designers that go towards leather, metal or stones, which she manages to control and model through a personal technique that she will register for copyright. The center piece of her work are necklaces, that inspire her due to a somehow static positioning, as one’s neck is not involved into movement such as the case of hands or fingers and also, due to the generous size possibilities that challenge her creativity. Also, as being very close to the wearer’s face and eyes, these pieces receive the greatest attention. As many gifted spirits of all arts that have the power of perceiving special features

romana-accessories.tumblr.com and on www.endra.ro . Confident and full of energy, Romana is focusing on developing her brand. Her future projects that include participating to art and design fairs and exhibitions will strengthen the notoriety and help her establish a name that equalizes her talent. Diana Nita and Romana Topescu are just two examples of gifted debuting designers that have chosen small but wise steps in building a career, demonstrating that the exposure of talent is a brilliant way of gaining the proper recognition. www.bucurestiwww.ro

Copenhagen, Geneva or Bucharest An Expat’s Point of View

A

lthough there are some important aspects that have not changed in the Romanian Capital in the last years (sidewalks are still not clean, there are no bicycle tracks, there isn’t enough lighting on the streets, nor enough parking places), Bucharest occupies the 14th place among the top of European cities which are preferred by the citizens of other countries who live there, as Roxana Lupu tells in her article in “Evenimentul Zilei”, titled “The Capital, More and More Loved by Expats”. The city is more and more appreciated thanks to the quality of security, housing and health and this is the reason why expats want to work and even settle here, the same thing being true for another East-European city, Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia, as shown in a study by ECA International, a Human Resource company. “There are better restaurants, more concerts by international stars, more shopping. Life has improved considerably”, says Tom Murray, who came to Romania 15 years ago and has become a successful businessmanin the textile industry. He also believes that, even if prices have gone up a lot recently, life is still cheaper here than it is in Western Europe or in the United States, and Bucharest has the charm of a European Capital. Nevertheless, in Tom’s opinion the cost of basic goods is a major problem. The things used by the middle class now carry the price of luxury goods, and the cost of utilities has increased dramatically. For the Romanians, as well as for the expats, the quality of life depends on the wages they earn. If the wage is one of thousands of Euros per month, they can say they live well, but if it is a middle income one, even an expat faces the tough realities of daily life, thinks Tom: “If you have money, you can do anything you want in Bucharest: you hire people to manage your daily business, you eat in the best restaurants, you travel overseas or to other Romanian cities on weekends.” Nevertheless, he thinks that Bucharest cannot be considered the most sophisticated European Capital yet. Another businessman, Christopher Troxler, who has lived in Romania for five years, fell in love with Bucharest as soon as he got here. “It was love at first sight”, he says. “I simply liked the atmosphere.” Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark, holds the first place among the preferences B Bucuresti what, where, when

of expats, shows the study mentioned above. In the top ten places are cities in Switzerland and Germany, such as Geneva, Basel and Bern, and respectively Dusseldorf, Bonn and Munich. The expats coming from Asia have their own top list: Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, in Australia, as well as two regions,

from Japan, Kobe and Yokohama. Hong Kong and Shanghai, in China, occupy places 15 and 78, respectively. In the Middle East, expats prefer Manama, the Capital of Bahrein, and Dubai and Muscat. Bagdad, the Iraqui Capital, holds the last place in the world, number 300, because of the precarious security level.

Massage: Relaxation & Healing

M

assage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an effort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively affected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar. Although massage does have positive medical benefits, in most cases it is not a replacement for modern medicine. The history of massage dates back almost as far as recorded history. For thousands of years some form of massage or the “laying on of hands” has been used to helpl the sick. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, massage was one of the principal methods of healing and relieving pain. Generally, if you are in good health and just feeling a little tense, a massage may be a good way to go.. www.bucurestiwww.ro

The City Offers

s much as work and stress as may represent your usual day, as much as you may feel that you are lost between meetings, important decisions, projects and work plans, you must admit that you sometimes think about possible moments of relaxation, with everything that might include. Whether a comfortable sofa suddenly comes to your mind, or you imagine yourself in front of a promising and dynamic TV or movie screen, or you think of the future coffee on a terrace

with a dear companion, or new clothes to choose or to try on, the fast workflow is interrupted by such flashes. I would gather this entire complex into a single word: entertainment. There may not be many people who ask themselves “What does entertainment mean today”. Once the word covered something far less complicated than today. It designated a way of spending spare time in a pleasant and relaxing way. But now, when everything is compacted into smaller and smaller time units, the appearance of things changes daily, and the idea of spare time is more and more vague and almost about to be extinct. So it’s no wonder that anything that suggests spending time in a different manner than working can be considered entertainment. Especially if you leave your home for one, two or several days. What is called “business tourism” today does not exclude the desire for some time pleasantly spent. And once having arrived at a new destination, the search begins. The possibilities are, as many and as different, on all the levels and underground D Bucuresti what, where, when

structures of a city, especially if we are talking about a Capital. A living, constantly moving and changing Capital, such as Bucharest, a town in action that offers many things, but also requires a lot of tenderness. So let’s take things one step at a time. A trip to an unknown place forces you to change the stereotype move with a slower walk, combined with gaping and watching new things. Music is everywhere. And you should listen to it. Whether it is the music in a bar, or the pocket of the kit bag filled with CD’s or an mp3 player hung around your neck, music is everywhere. For those who love concerts, while the clubs gather the most renowned DJ’s of the moment to satisfy all tastes,. For many people, nightlife means lifestyle. In the ancient centre of town we can find the greatest assembly of new and cosmopolitan places, for all tastes and pockets. There is also the Green Hours formula, a brand already, where theatre, books and jazz are served together with cocktails and exquisite drinks. Bucharest is still a Balkan fair, with the same old air that mixes the Orient with the Occident, with visible and invisible faces, but it is also a European city, where more and more people come to visit. Today we have reviewed what spending your spare time can mean, and also where and how you can do it. Starting with the next number, I shall stop longer on one of the pieces of this puzzle.

The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. Visiting hours: Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (May - September) 10 a.m - 6 p.m. (October - April) Closed: Monday, Tuesday THE OLD ROYAL COURT

During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

MARKETS IN BUCHAREST

One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

is sound, and I am sure it will host many memorable sports events in the coming years. Fall brings great opportunities for walking the mountain trails of Prahova Valley, but even a walk in some of the City parks like Cismigiu or Herastrau will be rewarding. Since we now do have a few companies renting bicycles, if you are here over a week-end, with the summer heat finished, and the week day traffic gone, it’s a great way to get around town and see some of the sights.

Dear Reader,

the last word

Another year is almost over. Time seems to pass more quickly as you get a little older! Yesterday we were heading to the beach, and now it’s almost Christmas time! The theater season is in full swing, with the Enescu Festival leading the way. I hope you were able to attend some of the exciting September events. The opera season started with a major premiere, and continues with an exciting program. I cannot recommend this enough. Not only can you see world class productions featuring international stars, but the ticket costs make the opera affordable to all. And, since late September, you can even buy your tickets on line. Don’t miss this opportunity. Fall always brings us some visits from international stars, stopping here on their World Tours. Keep an eye out for some of the posters and you might get a chance to see someone here, whom you would never see back home. The new National Arena sports stadium was inaugurated, with the first major game bringing some controversy and embarrassment. But the structure

I am afraid that for all the optimistic forecasts from 2010, this year has not seen any significant improvement in our economy. As the EU founders, trying to solve the “Greek problem”, Romania is stagnating, with almost no new foreign investments, and our own austerity program is bringing pain, but no meaningful improvements. It promises to be a hard winter, especially for people on fixed incomes. We are entering the busiest retail period of the year, so we will soon learn how the Romanian consumer has held up so far. With new hypermarkets opening all over the country, the major retailers are showing a great deal of confidence in the future. Let us hope it will prove to have been justified. Whether you are here for business or pleasure, Bucharest has a lot to offer, and I hope you enjoy it to the fullest.
