Carpathian Golden Bear The movie “Pozitia copilului” (Aka. Child’s Pose), directed by Calin Peter Netzer, received the Golden Bear trophy for the best film end-February, at the 63rd International Film Festival in Berlin. The reward was received by director Calin Peter Netzer and producer Ada Solomon, from the legendary filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, chairman of the jury of this year’s Berlin Film Festival. “Child’s Pose” was in Berlinale 2013 official competition alongside 18 other films, while in the official competition jury of the International Film Festival were part Wong Kar Wai (Chairman), Susanne Bier, Tim Robbins, Shirin Nesh, Athina Rachel Tsangari, Andreas Dresen and Ellen Kuras. After receiving the Golden Bear trophy on the Berlinale stage, the Romanian director Calin Peter Netzer said: “I’ll try to say something, although I am speechless. I thank Berlinale which invited us here, thanks to the festival director Dieter Kosslick, but also to Razvan Radulescu, the co-writer of the screenplay for this film “. In turn, the producer of the film, Ada Solomon said: “I thank our main actress, Luminita Gheorghiu, this award is for the most part her prize. Of course I thank Calin Peter Netzer, who made this film.” “Romanian politicians should be more attentive to the Romanian cinematography and to the Romanian filmmakers, who are some remarkable ambassadors for Romania,” continued Ada Solomon. She also thanked to all strong women in Romania, those working in the film industry, but also to the Berlinale, a festival that she considers “a talents’ workshop”. The Grand prize, Golden Bear trophy, received by “Child’s Pose” at the festival’s gala came after Calin Netzer’s film received, the night before, also the International Critics’ Prize - FIPRESCI (Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique) at the same International Film Festival in Berlin.

13 Cities for Earth Hour 2013 13 cities have joined the race for the title of Earth Hour 2013 Capital in Romania, a competition organized by WWF-Romania in the context of the event Earth Hour 2013. Scheduled for March 23, between 20:30 to 21:30, Earth Hour, the largest environmental event in history, continues the tradition already known to turn off the lights symbolically, but also the Earth Hour competition for its Capital, which is for the second year. Cities that accepted to accepted this year the WWF challenge to prove that they can build medium and long term strategies for the benefit of citizens and nature are Adjud, Botosani, Buftea, Bucharest, Constanta, Giurgiu, Hunedoara, Iasi, Pitesti, Ploiesti, Roman, Slatina and Timisoara. Municipalities participating in the contest on behalf of their communities have field a dossier detailing the projects and initiatives conducted regarding environmental protection in recent years, and those to be implemented in the near future, including plans for organizing Earth Hour 2013. The areas considered are: environmental infrastructure, energy saving and renewable energy investment, management and expansion of green spaces, education and communication in this field, improvement / development of transportation, biodiversity conservation and the implementation of good environmental practices at the City Hall. The jury for the Earth Hour 2013 Capital gathers the WWF-Romania Director, Greenitiative association founder and director, Ecoteca association Program Manager and the Romanian Council for Green Building Director. The competition for the Earth Hour Capital title is not only between municipalities, but also between the inhabitants of the competing cities who will make the difference. According to the rules, cities, following assessment dossiers, which will get top three scores will enter the final competition for the capital of Earth Hour. In the final residents of these three cities are invited to bring in a place which will be communicated by the municipality, as many PET. The city where will be collected the largest amount of PET will be designated as Earth Hour 2013 Capital in Romania.

Amfiteatru Foundation in Bucharest organizes the second edition of the International Forum for Responsible Tourism, during March 29 to 31. Initiated in 2012, the National Forum for Responsible Tourism was conducted in partnership with the Romanian Academy - Centre for Industrial Economics and Services and is mainly aimed at promoting the concept of “responsible tourism” in all environments tourism promoters. Saint Patrick’s Day Festival To mark the Irish presidency of the EU Council, the Embassy of Ireland in Romania, in partnership with the Centre for Cultural Projects ArCub and Ireland Romania Network Association will organize between March 15 to 19, in Bucharest, the largest St. Patrick festival ever held in Romania.

The Ireland’s national holiday dedicated to its spiritual patron Saint Patrick, celebrated on March 17, brings Bucharesters Irish music concerts, a parade with pageants, Irish dance performances, balls and official receptions. Place of History and Legends

The Land of Upper Arges About two hours from Bucharest, going North-West, up on the Valley of Arges River… Three days in the mountains, at the foot of Fagaras Mountains, in Valea cu Pesti Hotel (Fish Valley) and in the whole area full of natural beauty, contemporary achievements or Romanian history relics, was an it is a great idea for a prolonged weekend, but also for a longer stay. Dumitru Grecu, chairman of the company managing the new 4-stars Valea cu Pesti hotel (for those who remember the old cottage, it remained only in our memories...), invited us to a special info-trip, in which the hotel that he is in charge of was only the accommodation place and for other indoor recreational activities (as it has a pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, bowling, billiards, table tennis, games room and outdoor lighted soccer field). Moreover, of course, how could I forget the great lunches and dinners offered, where the first class Romanian food was on the first place? Otherwise, he astonished us with his modern vision on tourism, giving us visits in all surrounding places, at the dam Vidraru, at Capataneni Hydroelectric Plant and at the Poenari fortress, a Transfagarasan (one of the greatest mountain roads in the world) trip up to the alpine area where the road was snowy. At the departure to Bucharest, we stopped in Curtea de Arges, visiting the Royal Church of Curtea de Arges, with original frescoes unique in the world (14-th century), a visit to a traditional modeling clay workshop (producing Arges traditional ceramic), a lunch at Casa Domneasca Pension in the same city, and a great visit to Curtea de Arges Monastery, also known as Master Manole Church! After we traveled 4 km from the dam Vidraru, still 25 km away from the Curtea de Arges city, it was impossible to fail to notice Poenari fortress, that high on the Cetatuia mountaintop fortress, benefiting from its natural fortification, and that today guards the dam. Worth going up, regardless of the season, the 1,480 concrete steps that wrap around through the beech forest. At 850 m altitude, you get to this really “Eagles Nest”, part of a chain of fortifications that defended northern border of the Romanian Country, the Southern territory of the actual Romania. Poenari fortress, refuge of Vlad Tepes head of state, remains even today almost an inaccessible fortress. It was the last refuge of the Prince before leaving in Transylvania. The fortress, in its original form was linked with Curtea de Arges town. Night lighting a torch in its tower, the light signal 6 Bucuresti what, where, when

could be seen from the bell-tower from the Church of San Nicoara and vice versa. Nowadays, the climbing to the fortress is worth doing because you seriously test your psychical resources, while the landscape that unfolds you is the prize you get. The Church from the Royal Court Complex of Curtea de Arges still has much to reveal, secrets kept well preserved for over 650 years! Nevertheless, worth a visit for its stunning interior paintings, while between the enigmas you may include the tombstone of the unknown ruler, right in the nave of the church, by itself producing new mysteries with its carved symbols. Curtea de Arges Monastery, founded by Neagoe Basarab (in 5 years, between 15121517!), dedicated to the Assumption (15 August), is the monastery that surpasses in beauty all that was done on this lands until the sixteenth century, by its location and natural, architectural and artistic charm, and is the culmination of a ﬂourishing era for architecture and art.

Neagoe Basarab found the ancient church, the Arges Metropolitan Cathedral, demolished and uncured… “A left wall... and unﬁnished... in a green-hazel place...” Now more than 460 years ago, the Prince decided to build this great monastery, which was to surpass in beauty all that had been done before. Curtea de Arges Monastery building was due to Master Manole, along with “nine great masters, journeymen and masons,” who worked with him, but also to Manole’s wife, Ana, built in the monastery’s wall, so it to last forever, as the legend say. However, Curtea de Arges Monastery is not a legend, today is a reality that produces joy only when you get close to it. You understand what famous travellers said describing it, that is not so great as the Temple of Solomon, or as Saint Sophia made by Emperor Justinian, but that its beauty is “over those” ... You deserve at least one day of your time for a cultural and spiritual trip to Curtea de Arges. The monastery is not only a holy place of the Romanians, as well as an open history lesson, with the narthex tombs, of the main founders: Neagoe Basarab (+1521), nun Platonida - Queen Despina (+1554), wife of Neagoe Basarab, tombstone of Queen Stana (Sofronia) (+1531), daughter of Neagoe Basarab and wife of Stefanita Voda of Moldova, of the Prince Radu of Afumati (+1529), husband of Queen Ruxandra, another daughter of Neagoe Basarab, as well as the tombs of Romania’s kings Carol I and Elisabeta, Ferdinand and Maria. In the courtyard of the monastery is located, separately, the tomb of Carol II. In the center chapel of the Archbishop’s palace are preserved the relics of the Holy Martyrs Filoteia, while the wooden church behind the palace is itself a special place... Are you surprised at the monastery by its oriental laces? These are just a door open between East and West, which perfectly ﬁts into the Romanian Orthodox Christian line! Again on the road, and almost immediately a stop at Basarabov rock monastery, where they were found the relics of St. Dimitrie Basarabov, Saint Dimitrie the New - patron saint of Bucharest! Wine Promoting Prestigious Landmark • The Tenth Annual International Wine Fair - VINVEST Timisoara From April 19 to 21, Timisoara will host the tenth edition of the International Wine Show VINVEST. For three days, the resident, the tourists, and a lot of guests from all over the country, will stopover at the Regional Business Center Timisoara to taste the best Romanian and international wines. THE COTROCENI PALACE

It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reﬂect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.

It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides oﬃces, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The museum is a component of the European family of Museums of Popular Art and Traditions. A national museum, under the Ministry of Culture’s patronage, it has an especially rich collection of objects, hosted in a Neo-Romanian style historical monumentbuilding close to Victoria Square. The museum developed a highly original museography honored in 1996 by receiving the EMYA – the European Museum of the Year Award. The originality of the exhibiting style is continued in the Museum’s publications, in actions such as the Missionary Museum, the Village School, concerts, conferences and exhibition openings. Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in ﬁne weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The ﬁrst written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of ﬁre. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. Recycling requires an active and conscientious municipal government to facilitate and promote it, as well as municipal residents who are willing to suﬀer some minor inconvenience for the sake of an yet intangible and invisible good. Unfortunately, here in Bucharest we seem to have a limited supply of both. Yes, we do have a few dedicated recycling containers on a few major street corners, but they look

Bucharesters are nice people, friendly and helpful. Always ready, though not always correct, to help with street directions and advice. In their home buildings though, we can see the remnants of the communist era. Walk into any of the older communist era buildings, and you will find the front door shabby or broken. Of course, the “interphone” works, as it affects our individual personal safety. Nevertheless, the halls, stairwells and elevators are likely to be dirty and in need of a paint job. Look instead at the entrance doors to the private apartments. Most of them are new, clean and well maintained. And, as you enter the apartment itself you will find it neat, clean, nicely furnished and well maintained. The apartment belongs to a specific individual or family. The halls, and stairs belong to everyone, SO NO ONE cares or takes care of them “Its not my job”. This is not just a Romanian syndrome, I have seen similar situations in the United States and elsewhere. I sincerely hope that the generation of young people now coming of age will begin to understand that keeping our cities clean, recycling and saving energy is everyone’s job, and that they learn it before its too late. A few short years ago, we were able to hide our head in the sand, and think of climate changes as something which MIGHT affect our grandchildren. But after the recent series of violent winter storms, floods in one area and droughts in a neighboring one, no rational person can deny that climate change is upon us, much quicker than we anticipated. The time to act is NOW! So please enjoy springtime in Bucharest, but also, please help us keep our City clean.
