The hot summer forecasted for this year didn’t reach yet Bucharest, and this June, with “softer” prediction, it’s in front of us. May was still a quite capricious month and the terraces Downtown Bucharest just started their activity, still waiting for guests. The strange weather that the Bucharesters who remain in town for various reasons will endured will be sweetened only by the music that would delight all the fans with less known performers or most famous, and I take into account only the Patricia Kaas and Uriah Heep concerts! And by the beer, beer flowed in waves this June, both in the city’s terraces and in our homes. In fact, not only the beer will quench our thirst during this soft June! We’ll also have the chance to taste last autumn’s wines and give a lap at renowned wineries in Romania. The road is shortened with the help of Vintest, international wine trade fair, this year organized also at the Palace Hall, downtown Bucharest! I’ll keep you informed, it really is an event not to be missed! The sun installed itself over Bucharest and the city is much more enlightened. The beautiful Bucuresti women, still in the city, have of course their merits, the fact is that our self-confidence is significantly increased! And if it is late spring and we still have free time, a beer with our friends is appreciated of course. Our habits return to normal and we begin to prefer meeting our friends instead of watching the TV screen. After the last summer Olympics TV therapy. City terraces testify that I am not the only one who thinks so. The business is meaningful for the owners of such “entertainment places.” Starting with some old terraces they replaced them in time with elegant restaurants allover the city. But is not the role of these lines to give an economical judge. I just try to enjoy along with tens of thousands of Bucharesters that we can meet with our friends for a beer. I am glad that young people are also back on the terraces (preparing to start for the Coast), preferring them instead to computer games rooms, ‘mechanical’ games... To the terrace we put together or dismantle almost everything - politics, football, business, small or large, a summer love and the love of a lifetime... We have or we do not have money to go to foreign beaches, to mountains or in the islands, for a beer at the terrace we find the necessary resources in our pocket or in friends’. That’s why friends are friends to pay us a beer! Do not mess with Bucharesters habits! If he didn’t take his beloved with him, she’s forgotten at a beer with friends. The problem is your lover has to come after you if she wants to fully recover you only for her! With as many impatient for terraces and a beer, turned up the terraces “enclave” in Bucharest Old Center of the City. Who has not opened yet a place on Selari, Smardan, Lipscani, Gabroveni streets... almost doesn’t exist. All restaurants and pubs owners have opened “branches,” feeling the business... And in terms of consumers, unless you show yourself in the Old Center you do not exist! Dorobanti became oldfashion, crowded terraces and places in the Old City calls us now. Some arrive even with their motorcycles to show them, the advantage of moving on two wheels between cars made barriers! We expose everything! But I’m already thirsty and my friends call me. See you at a beer!

Uriah Heep rockers returns for the Romanian fans for a great concert in Bucharest. The British musicians reunion with the local fans will be on June 11, in the Arenele Romane, starting at 20:00. With a career spanning almost 45 years, the British are considered to be one of the greatest hard rock bands of the ‘70s. Uriah Heep has 23 studio, 13 live and 16 compilations albums, sold in millions of copies worldwide. Although the band has undergone countless changes over time, Uriah Heep made history in the music charts with songs like “Lady in Black”, “July Morning”, “Gypsy” and “Easy Livin ‘. The first Uriah Heep concert in Romania took place our 21 years ago during Rock Festival ‘92, and ten years later they sang with Iris, on Baneasa Airport, at the “Iris - 25 years” concert. The most important fashion event in Romania - Bucharest Fashion Week will take place on June 11-13, at Ambasad’Or Events & Leisure. Movie professionals, independent ones and enthusiasts can submit their films to the event which will take place on the Stadium of the Transylvanian City, June 14 to 16. Feature films or documentaries on ethnographic subjects can be submitted without time restrictions, even if they participated in other film festivals. “FIFE” comes with the opening of the “Cultural Center for Visual Arts” which includes a local movie and photo club, where young people can learn movie image, film editing, film directing and photography under the guidance of specialists. The first edition of the International Festival of Ethnographic Film Zlatna aims to propagate Romanian culture and traditions through promoting young artists. This festival helps training and educating the independent movie producers, is to discover new talents and promote the exchange of cultural values with other countries. Chianti Emotions On May 29, in the “Le Diplomate” hall of Bucharest Athénée Palace Hilton Hotel, within the fifth edition of the Italian Festival (www.festivalitalian. ro), has been organized the event “Chianti Emotions”, dedicated to the presentation of the famous Tuscan agro-food and agro-tourism products, from the region of Chianti Fiorentino. The presentation was organized by the Italian Embassy in Bucharest, Bucharest ICE Agency and the Italian Chamber of Commerce for Romania, in collaboration with the Region of Tuscany and municipalities in Barberino Val d’Elsa, San Casciano Val di Pesa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. The event highlighted the region and products of the Chianti Fiorentino companies participating in the event, the event facilitating meetings between these companies and Bucharest companies from the Restaurants, distribution and gastronomy area, the food sector and also meeting with tour operators for agro-tourism. The event ended with a cherished wine, olive oil and other typical Italian products tasting, followed by B2B meetings.

Patricia Kaas returns to Bucharest on June 23 at Sala Palatului, where she will present songs from her latest album - “Kaas Chante Piaf”. Patricia Kass brings tribute or Edith Piaf, singing live in front of the Romanian fans songs as “Non, Je ne regrette rien”, “Paris”, “Padam, Padam”, “Milord” and many others. The Bucharest concert is part of a tour which promotes the album “Kaas Chante Piaf”, released on November 5, to commemorate the 50th celebration of the death of the great artist Edith Piaf. The tour covers over 45 countries and will end at the end of this year. Patricia Kaas had her first concert in Bucharest in June 2004, and then in June 2009, in the show titled “Kabaret”. The Catalogue of Guesthouses in Romania The National Foundation of Young Managers (FNTM) has recently published the Catalogue of Guesthouses in Romania - 2013. The publication has two editions, in Romanian and English, and will be released for free nationally and internationally. The source of the catalogue, the site www.cazarelapensiune.ro, gathers over 3,400 guesthouses and businesses related to the tourism sector, creating this way the community of guesthouses tourism Cazarelapensiune.ro. Its members recognized the value of associating and promoting their image through this instrument, in order to attract tourists. The catalogue presents over 2,000 guesthouses, organised by the nine historical regions of Romania. The initiative is part of the national strategic project “Entrepreneurs in Tourism – Guesthouses in Romania”, implanted by FNTM in partnership with the National Association of Rural Ecological

The Escalating Eastern European E-Commerce Craze Rapid growth in Internet usage and consumer demand has seen the Eastern European Internet retailing market, whose value expanded by 107% in real terms over 2007-2012, enter the mainstream. Stronger supply links between e-commerce businesses and cheap manufacturing markets, and a more tech-savvy consumer base have been factors driving this trend. However, a lack of electronic banking integration and high competition in some segments are proving challenges to e-tailers.
The increasingly low start-up costs of running an online retailing business have encouraged private enterprises to mushroom across Eastern Europe. Willing consumers looking to make savings in an environment of a global economic slowdown have boosted the segment. Russia is home to the largest Internet retailing market in the region, with a value of almost US$ 10.5 billion in 2012, while Romania, not present in the graphics, is placed with almost the same figures like Czech Republic. Nonetheless, the emerging nature of regional economies means that some aspects of e-commerce remain underdeveloped, with electronic payments still underutilized and the sector generally unregulated. A lack of consumer trust therefore still exists, and segments such as digital communications, which tend to offer proven brands, often perform better than others. Consumer electronics and video games hardware made up the largest share of Eastern European Internet retailing in 2012, excluding other Internet retailing, at 23.7%.
Implications
The popularity of e-commerce has helped spawn offshoot business opportunities in the region, even though a cash economy continues to dominate in the sector: • The integration of the post-communist Eastern bloc into the global economy has seen Internet retailers reach out to cheap manufacturers abroad, in a bid to increase profit margins. The inflow of cheaply produced goods in segments such as communications, clothing and accessories has flooded the regional e-commerce segment and provided consumers with significant savings compared to in-store retailers. Imports from China to the region amounted to over US$ 100 billion in 2012; • The twin impacts of growing disposable incomes and greater telecom penetration have driven the 4 Bucuresti what, where, when

Internet retailing boom. The take-up of social and digital media, which have provided the necessary marketing platforms, has also increased traffic to retailers. Eastern European per capita disposable income expanded by 20.6% in real terms over 2007-2012, while the percentage of the populace using the web almost doubled from 28.4% to 52.1% over the same period; • However, low-level electronic banking penetration means most consumers prefer to pay by cash, limiting the efficiency of operations for retailers. Nonetheless, a burgeoning number of payment gateways are offering consumers alternative methods of payment, which is attracting a greater number of willing shoppers; • The region’s less saturated Internet retail markets are seeing the most rapid expansion in e-commerce, as Internet penetration catches up with the commercial potential. Opportunities are extensive for e-tailers to tap into urban markets in countries such as Albania, Macedonia and Lithuania and benefit from a growing middle class, which is becoming increasingly accepting of online transactions. Albania saw the fastest rise in Internet retailing value in 2012, at 23.6% in annual real terms; • More advanced markets in Eastern Europe - Poland, Russia and the Czech Republic, are already extremely competitive, especially in in-demand segments such as communications. This is benefitting consumers on the ground as discount wars between established online retail brands are driving down prices.
Prospects
• The Internet retailing boom is set to continue in the region going forward, boosted by rising web usage via mobile wireless devices, the continued substitution effect of e-commerce goods and services for bricks and mortar stores, and progress in technology allowing for server costs to decline. Serbia is set to see the fastest expansion in Internet retailing value in 2013, rising by 21.8% in annual real terms, while Russia will continue to be the largest market by virtue of its massive population size; • The ability of online operators to minimize the payments of bribes or protection money to corrupt officials is set to be a big driver behind the e-commerce movement. The lack of a physical storefront makes it significantly harder to be exploited by shadow economies, which are still in operation across many Eastern European markets. • However, the primary consumer group utilizing online retailing services remains the under-30 section of the population, partly a result of low-level Internet usage among the older demographic. Online businesses that can market their products to older brackets, which are expanding due to rapid population ageing, and get them using the web can unlock considerable opportunities among this sleeping giant. By 2020, only around 55.0% of Eastern European households are expected to possess a broadband Internet enabled PC. ESCAPE THE CITY
The point of these lines is to strategize a game plan for those stationed in this beautiful city for the next hot months. Summer in Bucharest can get hot. I don’t mean ‘warm’ or ‘humid’ or even ‘slightly uncomfortable’, I mean ‘blisteringly’ hot, ‘surface-of-the-sun’ hot.
The easy answer may be to just position yourself directly under the nearest air conditioning unit and not move for a couple of months, but for many this is simply not an option. For the vast majority, daily actions such as work, shopping and socializing must continue. Many Bucharesters will simply head for the mountains or the Black Sea Coast. Bucharest, you see, sits in the middle of a large flat expanse of land with a mountainous region to the north and a coastal region to the east. The mountains, offering beautiful scenery and wildlife also offer a much cooler climate due to their positioning above sea level. The coastal
region with its main town Constanta and its neighboring holiday resort Mamaia, or going South Mangalia and the numerous connected resorts, offers a large expanse of sea front with cooling light winds and of course the ability to take a dip in the Black Sea to cool off from the ever prominent heat. There are endless terraces and bars to choose from to sit and relax with your favorite iced beverage and you’ll find Djs playing the latest music on the beach front whilst holiday makers frolic amidst the waves. Both options, be it the mountains or the beach contain numerous Hostels, Inns and Hotels which can rapidly become full over the weekends, so keep that in mind when planning an escape from the city. options ensure a relaxing weekend, they do not solve the problem of the weekday grilling you may feel you’re receiving in the city between Monday and Friday. Many warm summer evenings I’ve found myself in one of the city’s numerous shopping malls, not only do they offer a plethora of shops, cafes and restaurants, but they nearly all benefit from being very well ventilated, helping to keep you at a pleasant temperature. One trick that worked for me last year was to escape the heat of the afternoon by venturing to the cinema. Again, the majority of cinema screens at a very tolerant climate and I found it a great way to keep up with the endless stream of summer blockbuster films whilst not feeling like my blood was literally boiling in my veins. Another option is to head for the tranquility of one of the city’s parks. Whilst there is no direct evidence that the temperature is any cooler than the street, the simple act of sitting under the shade of a tree, or on a terrace, can have wonderful results. My favorites are Cismigiu and Herastrau, although Parcul Carol and Parcul Tineretului, both slightly south of Unirii Square, are equally cooling and attractive. If you try to meet a friend at a terrace, maybe Downtown, the so called historic centre, try to avoid the peak times (between 8-10 am and 5-7 pm) when overcrowding is common in all public transportation means. Assuming you’ve escaped at least the worst of the heat and are sitting in a shaded café, bar or terrace, must be, ‘what to drink?’ What one drink could possibly quench your thirst whilst cooling you down? For this there can be only one answer, Romanian ‘Lemonade‘. You may find here the most refreshing, simple iced lemon beverage known to man. Once you’ve tried it you know there is no going back to your favorite brand of soda. Usually mixed by hand with fresh juice, the lemonade not only takes the sting out of the midday sun but also serves you up a generous dose of C vitamin. Scan the menu for popular alternatives such as lemonade served with mint, or often with orange and lime, delightful alternatives on the classic recipe and equally delicious. With these hints and tips it is possible to enjoy all Bucharest has to offer this summer, whilst maintaining a regular temperature and cheery disposition.
The Romanian Tourist national authorities all say they do not have the means to make Romanians travel more and to bring more foreign tourists in Romania. Why not to follow the German model, since the German National Tourist Board and Stuttgart Region recently welcomed international trade professionals from the tourism industry. The Stuttgart Region hosted the 39th GTM Germany Travel Mart 2013. At the invitation of the German National Tourist Board (Deutsche Zentrale für Tourismus (DZT)) welcomed from May 5 to 7, more than 610 buyers, tourism professionals and journalists from 42 countries to the GTM, and more than 350 German providers from the hotel, inbound and transport sectors, as well as local and regional tourism organizations. GTM, the biggest inbound workshop for the travel destination of Germany, is staged each year in Germany, in 2013 this B2B event bringing tourism experts from all over the world to Stuttgart. “The GTM can look back on a long and successful history and is of major importance to the German incoming tourism sector. I’m convinced that the Stuttgart Region tourism destination will be a professional host,” told us Petra Hedorfer, Chief Executive Officer of the German National Tourist Board. “Stuttgart is one of Germany’s most dynamic economic regions. It has also undergone very positive development in recent years as an attractive tourism destination. The fact that Stuttgart has been chosen as the venue for the 2013 GTM underlines our importance. We will be proud to do justice to our role as host,” affirmed Michael Föll, Chairman of the supervisory board of the Stuttgart-Marketing GmbH and Regio Stuttgart Marketing- und Tourismus GmbH and Deputy Mayor of the
city of Stuttgart. “The event is an ideal sales platform and a unique opportunity to present the attractive Stuttgart Region to tourism experts from all over the world and convince them of our tourism offers,” said Armin Dellnitz, Managing Director of the StuttgartMarketing GmbH and Regio Stuttgart Marketing- und Tourismus GmbH. The two-day workshop has been organised by the GNTB in Stuttgart for the third, following 1988 and 2002. During the event, cooperation has been cultivated with tour operators from abroad, contracts signed and valuable acquisition contacts strengthened. International tourism holds a great deal of potential for the Stuttgart Region; it has already become a mainstay and still offers plenty of scope for development. The proportion of German and foreign overnight visitors wass 76:24 (in 2012). There has been a sharper rise in the number of incoming visitors from abroad compared with domestic tourism, certain foreign markets showing an aboveaverage rate of growth. The GTM presented a unique opportunity for the Stuttgart Region to take another step forward in the expansion of its international overnight tourism. During the workshop, the entire Stuttgart Region presented itself as a firstclass host, the guests looking forward to a varied, top-caliber touristic supporting program. The choice of venues was strategyoriented and has fallen on the Stuttgart Region’s main visitor attractions: a reception in the New Palace, informal networking at the evening welcome reception with Swabian cuisine in the heart of Stuttgart, a big opening ceremony in the “Forum am Schlosspark” in Ludwigsburg followed by an impressive celebration in the Baroque former royal residence of Ludwigsburg Palace, an exclusive evening event in the spectacular MercedesBenz Museum and a concluding visit to the Stuttgart Spring Festival or a shopping trip to the Outletcity Metzingen. All the different facets of the Stuttgart Region has been shown: an automobile region with a 127-year history, a metropolis with first-class art and culture, traditional festivals and magnificent palaces. “An event like the GTM gives an immense boost to the region’s self-awareness,” confirmed us Andrea Gehrlach, authorised representative of the Stuttgart-Marketing GmbH. “Partners from the region can lodge their offers and products directly with the tourism professionals through an emotive experience.” Stuttgart hosted around 1,300 participants from all corners of the globe, between them 130 leading international journalists, who have been introduced to the Stuttgart Region’s highlights with programs devised especially for the press. We could experience “live” that the Stuttgart Region is an international metropolis that is well positioned as a tourism destination, quite apart from being home to global brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Bosch. Vintest - Recognition & Appreciation for the Romanian Wines This late spring, Bucharest will host the third Romania’s National Wine Trade Fair, Vintest. On June 6-9, at Sala Palatului, downtown Bucharest, the Romanian wine industry joins one of the most elevated events dedicated to wine. The location chosen again for this third edition is downtown Bucharest, and it’s known over the years as an important cultural institution, hosting many international congresses, concerts, festivals, performances, film screenings, national and international exhibitions. Wine producers and related services, distributors, or wine tourism companies, will join public figures, ambassadors, expert tasters, sommeliers, celebrities from show business and many wine lovers. Eng. Lucia Pirvu, expert taster, Vintest organizer, told us: “Vintest aims at testing the Romanian wines by domain experts and enthusiasts, and learning local wine by the informed public. Knowing the story of wine from vineyard to bottling, recognizing the quality of a wine with the help of expert tasters, visitors will realize how wealthy is the Romanian wine variety and how important they are for promoting Romania’s image in the European and global context. Vintest is a real chance where Romania can prove the traditional Romanian products, the beauty of the areas housing cellars, complemented by reputed Romanian hospitality. For us it is important to convey both technical skills and abilities in wine tasting, knowledge of Romanian varieties, flavoring the wine with food, and the beneficial effects of wine on health. “The objectives that remain in the attention of the organizers refer to attract strategic partners, to showcase the recent products, business relationships, promoting small producers, and Romanian wine presentation in front of diplomats, presenting Romanian and foreign
journalists the wine quality, wine tourism, wine tasting promotion as well as public education. Vintest follows a national overview of wine regions, vineyards, producers, local wines, wines with a protected designation of origin and geographical indication, the potential and quality of their production. During these four days, the Bucharesters and tourists in the Capital are invited to taste wines, test new range of wines, to plan vacation in one of the beautiful places in Romania where there are wine cellars prepared for wine tasting, to admire the skills of the bartenders and to taste traditional Romanian food prepared by chefs. Vintest third edition will be a real festival of the presence of wine producers in Romania, who will meet the delegates of the 36th OIV Congress, World Congress of Vine and Wine. After 45 years (since 1968), the Congress will be held again in Bucharest. The international event will bring together the 45 OIV countries and, as every year,
leading researchers in viticulture, winemaking, economics and law, to discuss the latest innovations in the wine sector, including in the program technical sessions. “We will try to offer a favorable and pleasant ambiance, so that the 45 presidents of Vine and Wine Industry to find out both large and small wine producers, and the performance in the Romanian wine quality,” added Lucia Pirvu. Vintest event is created by Vinvest team, who also organizes for ten years the International Wine Show - Vinvest Timisoara. The main partners of the event are the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Romanian National Authority for Tourism. THE COTROCENI PALACE
It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reflect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.
It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The museum is a component of the European family of Museums of Popular Art and Traditions. A national museum, under the Ministry of Culture’s patronage, it has an especially rich collection of objects, hosted in a Neo-Romanian style historical monumentbuilding close to Victoria Square. The museum developed a highly original museography honored in 1996 by receiving the EMYA – the European Museum of the Year Award. The originality of the exhibiting style is continued in the Museum’s publications, in actions such as the Missionary Museum, the Village School, concerts, conferences and exhibition openings. assage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an effort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively affected by massage.
The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process. Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar. Although massage does have positive medical benefits, in most cases it is not a replacement for modern medicine. The history of massage dates back almost as far as recorded history. For thousands of years some form of massage or the “laying on of hands” has been used to helpl the sick. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, massage was one of the principal methods of healing and relieving pain. s much as work and stress as may represent your usual day, as much as you may feel that you are lost between meetings, important decisions, projects and work plans, you must admit that you sometimes think about possible moments of relaxation, with everything that might include. Whether a comfortable sofa suddenly comes to your mind, or you imagine yourself in front of a promising and dynamic TV or movie screen, or you think of the future coffee on a terrace with a dear companion, or new clothes to choose or to try on, the fast workflow is interrupted by such flashes. I would gather this entire complex into a single word: entertainment. There may not be many people who ask themselves “What does entertainment mean today”. Once the word covered something far less complicated than today. It designated a way of spending spare time in a pleasant and relaxing way. But now, when everything is compacted into smaller and smaller time units, the appearance of things changes daily, and the idea of spare time is more and more vague and almost about to be extinct. So it’s no wonder that anything that suggests spending time in a different manner than working can be considered entertainment. Especially if you leave your home for one, two or several days. What is called “business tourism” today does not exclude the desire for some time pleasantly spent. And once 22

having arrived at a new destination, the search begins. The possibilities are, as many and as different, on all the levels and underground structures of a city, especially if we are talking about a Capital. A living, constantly moving and changing Capital, such as Bucharest, a town in action that offers many things, but also requires a lot of tenderness. So let’s take things one step at a time. A trip to an unknown place forces you to change the stereotype move with a slower walk, combined with gaping and watching new things. Music is everywhere. And you should listen to it. Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM
Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.
