A friend of the magazines we edit, and of mine, also among my professional connections on LinkedIn network, congratulated me on the 14 years I have already spent as Editor in Chief of Crystal Publishing Group! I thanked her, but still I was surprised. In this crazy-crazy world, we don’t even perceive the reality of the time passing. Caught between daily projects we don’t have the time to design our future, while introspections in our past years become increasingly scarce and superficial. I stopped for a brief recollection... In 1999 (which looks strange written, as if from another century... ), we used the computer almost exclusively as a more advanced typewriter, while the Internet entred its childhood. The graphics and editing software was far from what we have nowadays. We dedicated a lot of time to producing our magazines; but now, selecting from the zillion pieces of information that flooding us daily is the most time consuming activity. If back in ‘99 about 50% of the e-mail messages were well worth reading , today, only 2% is relatively useful editorial information. In 1999, the big issue was the Millennium Y2K bug. Nobody forecasted the end of the world, but the question of effectiveness of the computers, as a result of the two digit year abbreviation, was risen. Companies and organizations around the world have spent a huge amount of money checking records and modernizing their systems. The number of computer failures occurred when the internal clock turned 00, is still not known, but there is evidence of at least one bank which experienced difficulties. Few people, few indeed, asked if the significance of the problem was exaggerated! Nowadays, after we’ve past 9/11, the war in Iraq and part of the global financial crisis (not to mention the end of the world!), Y2K seems a joke of the past! Many predict for some time the disappearance of the printed media, shaken by online. It is a topic that I will address separately, in another editorial, but we forget that in Romania a past government gave the press distribution to some Arabs who bankrupted it instead developing, that the purchasing power of the Romanians is on a free fall and some stopped buying some newspapers, that during the last years occurred a severe deprofessionalization of the ‘professional’ journalists, that media marketing and advertising selling have regressed... and would be another thousand reasons. Redressing just some of them I strongly believe that this century we will still have in our hands printed media published! In the end a few words about Valentine, Valentine’s Day. This is not a celebration very close to my heart, but I cannot recognize the importance of every opportunity to spend romantic moments with your beloved person. So, Happy...

DEPARTMENTS 2. NEWS, EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS 36. THE LAST WORD

Bucharest in Top 100 Destinations I doubted the accuracy of different world tops and on January 21 it has been released a trustworthy one. It’s the Global market research company Euromonitor International study, Top 100 Cities Destination ranking, a list of the world’s top cities in terms of international tourist arrivals in 2011. Bucharest dropped one position from the previous year, ranked now 56, but the number of arrivals increased by 10% to 2.35 million. In Top 5 positions there are Hong Kong (with 21.83 million visitors), Singapore (19.82 million), London (15.1 million), Kuala Lumpur (13.32 million) and Macau (12.93 million). New York City is on the 9th place, followed by Istanbul, while Paris is 12th. Rome ranks 18 and Barcelona 20. Best ranked East European city is Budapest, ranked 25, with 4.38 million visitors. Prague is on 29th position, followed by Berlin and Vienna, while Madrid is ranked 34, and Warsaw 36. Bucharest is in front of Mumbai (India), Brussels, Johannesburg and Munich, while Athens is ranked 82. Bulgaria neighbor is present in the top with Burgas (no. 74, with 1.86 million visitors), Varna (no. 79) and Sofia (no. 96). According to Euromonitor International, the global growth recovery in 2011 contributed to higher demand in tourism, the number of visitors in the top 100 cities increasing by 7%. Emerging destinations in the Asia-Pacific economies have performed well due to their growth and regional tourism. Euromonitor International predicts that the number of visitors grew stronger in 2012. Vietnam has been a real performance, Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi cities registering increases of 40% for the second consecutive year. Due to economic uncertainties which persist in the global economy, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, growth will be sustained in the future especially by Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Lifting visa restrictions could lead to tremendous growth in the number of tourists by 2016

February brings Valentine’s Day - a Western feast adopted joyfully by some Romanians (especially by the youth), regarded with wariness by others who see it as a celebration of commercial, superficial - and Dragobete, traditional Romanian feast. Valentine’s story is still covered by the mystery of ancient Rome. The priest Valentine was imprisoned and sentenced to death because he defended the Christians and helped them to escape the terrible prisons of the Romans. Priest or doctor, or simply a defender of Christian love, Valentine became in time a beloved saint, expected and very popular worldwide. In the Romanian tradition, the day of love is Dragobete day. International Summer Camps The Best Way to Learn English

Shakespeare School Essay Competition encourages teenagers to create and write in English and opens new perspectives to Romanian students by giving them the chance to experience life and to study in a British top university campus. Shakespeare School Essay Competition is a national contest and already a tradition, this year’s edition being the fifth one. Since 2009 the competition reached 5,000 participants from more than 350 locations over the country. The main belief of the organizers, Shakespeare School Association for Education, is that Romanian students should be confident in their forces and should have high goals that can be achieved through study and creativity. Shakespeare School Essay Competition stimulates creative thinking, innovation and originality, and tries to motivate youngsters to improve their English. The competition is trying to open new horizons for Romanian students especially through the main prizes: two weeks long summer camps in some of England’s best universities, University College London and Harrow House College. The summer camps are a great opportunity to improve their English skills and also to make friends from all over the world. A typical day in a summer camp includes English classes with professors who are native speakers, plenty of sports and other fun activities in the campus, such as contests, karaoke or thematic evenings. Besides all the fun in the campus, the programme also includes visits to the main attractions in London and the surroundings: Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, London Eye or even Stonehenge. Other prizes for the top 20 candidates of the Essay Competition include summer courses at Shakespeare School, Cambridge exam fee vouchers, English books and dictionaries and other surprise gifts. There are also prizes for the professors: the professor with the most children in the contest can join the summer camp for free. Every student is rewarded with a certificate of attendance, and every professor with more than 15 students in the contest receives a certificate of merit, very valuable for their portfolio. There are two categories of participants in the competition: 1114 year olds and 15-20 year olds. Each year the subjects of the essays 4 Bucuresti what, where, when

What is the best way to learn a foreign language? The answer is pretty clear: the direct experience – living, eating and breathing in that language. And where else can you do that other than in the country of origin? Of course, language skills also depend, among other factors, on the period of time spent in a foreign country, but usually we don’t have enough to spare in our everyday life. For teenagers and young adults, who also have courses and exams impossible to skip, there is a solution for the lack of time, a more and more popular concept of learning foreign languages: international summer camps, organized in the summer in top universities. Native speaking professors offer classic lessons plus a variety of fun activities in the campus that enable the students to communicate. This is why the youngsters who join such an international camp are able to manage communication in English easily and the main reason for the popularity of English camps. Shakespeare School’s Summer English Camps are located in Great Britain, in England and Scotland, in great universities, such as Oxford or Cambridge, but there are also students who prefer to travel further, to the USA, where they can study in New York, San Francisco, or even Miami. UK camps bring together students from all over Europe, Asia and Africa, all learning surprising things about the British culture, but also about the differences around the world in a fun and friendly environment. Students return home feeling more open minded and more responsible after two weeks in a new country where they have had

to manage on their own. For every group of students, there is a group leader from Romania, a teacher of English usually, to handle any kind of situations. Students also get the chance to visit the surroundings during trips and they can choose from the main attractions, according to their interests. For example, for the summer camps in England, they can choose between London, Oxford, Portsmouth or Stonehenge. Quite impressive! International camps are a perfect way to experience life in a foreign country, in top universities and they are a very important step towards studying abroad. Shakespeare School in Bucharest organizes summer camps every year and many of the students who take part in these summer camps return to the United Kingdom to continue their studies. You can learn more about Shakespeare School’s International Summer Camps on www.shakespeare-school.ro and you can also sign up there.

CLASSICAL CAPITAL

IN THE YEAR OF THE ENESCU FESTIVAL Far from being just a big city with lots of shopping malls, luxurious hotels, restaurants and pubs, Bucharest is also a city of culture, and it can rightfully be considered the musical capital of Eastern Europe. Dozens of pop stars have come here lately and have given concerts which not only the Romanian fans, but also people from other countries have come to attend. Nevertheless, what makes Bucharest so special among the other capitals in this part of the world is its intense, rich, diverse and ever flourishing classical music life. The best known classical music event of Eastern Europe is, without any doubts, The Enescu Festival, that has become a cultural country brand and needs no further presentation for music lovers or, as a matter of fact, for anybody who has even the faintest idea about tourism or culture on the old continent. Taking place every other year, the great festival bearing the name of our national composer will alternate from now on with another one, The International Festival of Radio Orchestras (RadiRo), born 2012. But Bucharest is not waiting for festivals to enjoy classical harmonies. At the Atheneum, Opera or Sala Radio (Radio Hall), the public is delighted to see and hear our worldwide known artists, as well as famous guests from abroad, every night of the week, all through the year. A special place where you can listen to high quality music is the Romanian Atheneum. One thing never changes - a visit to this place will bring great pleasure not only to your ears, but also to your eyes. The circular building owes its shape to an older foundation that had been designed to serve to the construction of a circus. Inspired from the antique Greek temples, the edifice surprises at first sight by a historical colonnade which sustains a triangular gable. At the ground floor, the impressing marble hall englobes the twelve Doric columns supporting the concert hall. Four monumental spiral stairs in baroque style, made of marble from Carrara, leading to balconies at the intermediate floor, make the connection with the hall and with the annexes (offices, rehearsal rooms, cabins for soloists and conductors etc.). In the layout of the old Graeco-Roman amphitheatres, the almost 1,000 seats (three ground floor areas and two circular rows with 52 loges and central loge in the middle) offer a perfect view and an impeccable volume of sound. The fullness of the sound is due to the huge cupola, richly decorated, which “absorbs” the instrumental and vocal background from the podium in order to distribute it through 6 Bucuresti what, where, when

reverberation to the listeners, with the whole scale of harmonics, up to the finest timbral colours and nuances. The exceptional acoustics of the Romanian Atheneum has placed this concert hall among the best buildings of this kind not only in Europe, but in the entire world. The monumental fresco on the circular wall calls forth the history of the Romanian people in 25 episodes, but at the same time it creates a truthful image of the specific of the Romanian spirit, and it was painted in five years by the artist Costin Petrescu, in the “al Fresco” technique. The delicate fresco is a kind of counterpart of the warm tinges of red and gold in the luxuriant decoration of the cupola. Serving the beautiful idea that the national history must be presented as an open book, in which everyone can find something from the magnificence of the past and thus meditate upon the spiritual and moral values of our people, the Atheneum fresco is significant for the emblematic character of the monument. For more than half a century, the latter has become the headquarters of the “George Enescu” Philharmonic, and since 1958, the home of The “George Enescu” Festival. A temple of the Romanian art and culture, the Atheneum has been, in the 120 years since it was built, not only a building of the world heritage, whose architecture is representative for Romania and the Balkans, reminding of Greek antiquity, but also a symbol of the spiritual tradition of this people. Giving concerts on the podium of the Bucharest Atheneum is the equivalent of appearing on the stage of Scala in Milan in lyric art. You can listen to a high class concert while seeing all this beauty for 15 to 65 lei (3.5 – 15 Euro), the lowest prices in Europe! The most important event of 2013 is, without a doubt, The Enescu Festival. The XXIst edition, organized by ARTEXIM, will take place between 1-28 September and will house more than 150 events, of which 6 Romanian music concerts, 14 recitals and chamber concerts, 14 great orchestras with 28 concerts, 21 orchestra and chamber ensembles, 8 concerts in the series “Enescu and His Contemporaries”, 4 Opera shows, 2 ballet shows, 48 concerts within the

international contest, open air events in the Festival Square for 21 days, plastic arts exhibitions, the musicology symposium. Some of the most famous bands in the world have already confirmed participation, such as: Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam / Conductor: Maris Jansons, Staatskapelle Berlin / Conductor: Daniel Barenboim, Orchestra dell’Accademia Santa Cecilia di Roma / Antonio Pappano, Orchestre de Paris / Näme Järvi, London Philharmonic Orchestra / Vladimir Jurowski, Pittsburg Symphony Orchestra, Radio Berlin / Marek Janovski ( presenting the Wagnerian tetralogy ), Royal Stockholm / Sakari Oramo, Münchener Philharmoniker / Symion Bychkov, Saint Martin in the Fields / Sir Nevil Marriner, Evgeny Kissin, Muray Perahia, Pinchas Zuckermann, The National Russian Orchestra / Michail Pletnev, Fazil Say, Turls Mörk. Along with them, the following Romanian artists and bands will perform: Horia Andreescu, Cristian Mandeal, the “George Enescu” Philharmonic, the Cluj, Iasi and Timisoara Philharmonics, The Bucharest National Opera, The National Youth Orchestra and many others. The concert series „Enescu

and His Contemporaries”, with chamber works interpreted by young soloists and worldwide known ensembles, will continue, as well as the series „Great International Orchestras” and „Chamber Recitals and Concerts”. Due to the success of the previous edition, the series dedicated to contemporary music, „The Music of the XXIst Century”, will continue, and it will bring together the works of some Romanian and foreign contemporary composers. Like in the 2011 edition, a workshop of the young composers, master and Ph.D students from music universities in the country will be organised. The International Contest has been extended with a new section, following the discussions with specialists and participants. The five sections of the competition – (Wagnerian Voices), piano, violin, cello and composition – will take place between 1 and 27 September. They have been shifted, so as to allow the participation of the public and of the accompanist orchestras at a high level of quality, according to international standards. In Bucharest, the shows will take place in five locations: The Great Palace Hall (Sala Mare a Palatului), The Romanian Atheneum, The Bucharest National Opera, The Recitation Room of the National Museum of Art (Aula Muzeului National de Arta), The „Mihail Jora” Hall of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Society and in the Festival Square. More than 30 concerts will be organised in the country, in Arad, Bacau, Brasov, Cluj, Craiova, Dorohoi, Iasi, Oradea, Sibiu and Timisoara. Hotel Investment Concerns

PAUL MARASOIU PRES DENT & CEO - PEACOCK HOTELS / GLOBAL HOTEL MANAGEMENT

As a senior consultant in the field of investment and management in the hospitality industry, being directly and actively involved in developing and defining the hotel market in Romania in the last ten years, carefully observing the activities and concerns from the market in the past three years, I dare to draw attention about the limited and unprofessional manner in which they have addressed many hotel investment and subsequently their management, these being now in extreme situations, affecting their own interests, but equally the business environment, the local and national hotel market. The reason that causes this intervention is that a significant share of existing accommodation capacity in Romania, gradually over the last three years, was put up for sale in a “frozen” market, anyway. About eight - ten years ago, I drew attention about the rigor and specialization needed to address a hospitality investment, as the “keystone” of future business requiring an opportunity study, a market analysis of the time and perspective, thorough feasibility study, a detailed business plan, a realistic financial projection and a functional design that takes into account the needs and operational rigor in terms of a dedicated and serious hotel operator. Everything is normally continued with the option for a professional management, based on generally accepted principles, using terms, methods and procedures established in the field, income and expense budgets, specific indicators... For some years, many, too many of those who have not taken into account these minimum, but logical, needs of a sustainable investment are trying to sell without success, false tailored business from the start, but which “stole the start” due to an extremely favorable market context (2004 - 2007), but which, rationally, could not take too long. We now have “on the market”, on sale, many “units of tourists reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation” which, however, no one wants them. Guest to rent rooms are not so many and generous, and if they they’re opting for better looking units, which respect standards and have a management guests needs oriented, at rates which, however, decreased significantly in recent years. Moreover, those who intend to sell they over-evaluate their properties, as would have been constructed by the highest standards in the industry, and the business itself would be more than... thriving. It shouldn’t be disregarded that a real estate with hotel functions is evaluated in terms of how accurate and effective are the specific functions, what income can generate the “building”, at what cost, and whether the business is in operation, what market share has what stability. It is the 8

only way a building planned as hotel can have a value. Or not... To protect... the local investor from the hotel industry against... his own decisions, undocumented and hazardous, but subsequently affecting an entire market, not just his pocket or ego, it is appropriate that the new National Tourism Authority to collaborate with specialists in operation hotels field, with architects specializing in hotel projects, with local authorities and policy makers and with professional associations in the field in order to regulate the construction authorization only for those projects that fall into specific local architectural, that covers functions required in the area, which have a capacity correlated with the volume and types of tourist traffic in the area, which has accurate long development perspectives and may attract the necessary workforce from the area. The local authorities are primarily concerned to restore order in this regard, they cashing the local taxes. The more business is stable, the better for all. It is a great handicap and a real danger to a tourist market and its image, the freedom to build anywhere, anything and everything, regardless of the location, profile and capacity of the new property. We already have too many examples of “spectacular” failures after... “landslide” openings, all affecting in one way or another the structure of the hotel offer in the reference area. I dare to point out that the period during which the hotel investment obviously had to have a maximum number of stars, to necessarily be a reference in luxury... a local “monument”, ended long time ago. It is now time for efficiency, a pragmatic approach,

investment in a “means of production”, where costs are carefully controlled. The hotels segment called “budget” and “economy,” widespread throughout the world, is very poor present in Romania, despite visible enough demand for proper accommodation, decent but with limited service and with low prices. There is nothing degrading for an investor to take the initiative of building such a hotel, and not a five star hotel, especially if all initial evaluations show that a two star hotel in that location has an exploit efficiency index higher than the other. If the “smart” investor evaluates also the initial investment, which, for similar capacity may even be under a quarter of the necessary budget for a luxury property, he will be even more convinced of the justness choice for a “means of production” instead of a “monument.” In addition, the possibility of future sale is significantly higher. “Recipes” for these hotels are already present on the hospitality market in Romania through international hotel chains. In a relationship with an international hotel operator can be addressed different types of partnerships, including access to “turnkey” projects on a predefined concept, or support for adapting an existing design to the criteria

Centenary Cismigiu Hotel, Renewed Bucharest, 1912 - the launch of one of the most magnificent hotels in Little Paris - a symbol of interwar Bucharest: The Palace Hotel, later known as Cismigiu Hotel. Bucharest, 2012 - thanks to an investment of Euro 15 million of the Spanish company Hercesa, Cismigiu Hotel reopens! End 2012, December 19, the new Cismigiu Hotel had the official presentation. In 2004, the Spanish real estate developer Hercesa bought the Cismigiu building and launched a comprehensive reconstruction of the building, with the aim of bringing to life a building symbol of the city, a reference place for the social life of the Capital. Since the early work, the teams of architects and builders made their plans and actions based on an important idea: the building needed to maintain the same imposing and elegant look it had at the time of the inauguration, in 1912. Thus, the reconstruction preserved and restored the original facade, showing architectural elements from the early 20th century. The interior has been rebuilt from scratch and is equipped and furnished according to the modern requirements of comfort. The new Cismigiu Hotel respects the historical place, which gives a new life. The modern decor combines with touches of the old times and the atmosphere created gives a distinct personality and depth to the place. “Cismigiu building was the first acquisition of the company Hercesa in Romania. That is why it is our soul project and we are confident it will be a success and will regain its place in the heart of Bucharest inhabitants, travel agencies and tourists,” told us Mauricio Mesa Gomez, Hercesa director. “We see the hotel not only as a place where you can sleep some nights, but as a place where you can retire to unwind and prepare for the events of the following day. When you get caught between two destinations, with the busy schedule of meetings, you need the home comfort, safety and peace. A cup of fresh grinded coffee or a cup of aromatic tea, the dress or pants prepared for an important meeting, friendly and helpful service - these are the standards of Cismigiu Hotel in 2012. The hotel also complies with the rules of ecoresponsible behavior, while providing maximum comfort and relaxation to our customers,” said Georgeta Grecu, Cismigiu Hotel manager. of the concerned brand, and continuing with the franchise or operation and management complete solutions. Peacock Hotels search for evaluating projects on this niche market, with obvious operational efficiency and real prospects for national development. Peacock Hotels is the first company specialized in hotel management consultancy founded in Romania ten years ago. All this time has been involved in dozens of new investment projects, modernization and conversion, strategic or operational management, definition of concepts, punctual advice on various topics, personnel selection, analysis, evaluations and functional diagnosis. Peacock Hotels has also developed market studies whose conclusions were freely shared in the professional environment, generating currents of opinion, attitudes and trends, found in the hospitality industry developments in Romania. Peacock Hotels is a strategic partner for Romania for Golden Tulip - Louvre Hotels Group. Golden Tulip Louvre Hotels Group has over 1,100 hotels, with approx. 86,000 rooms in 50 countries, offering an unique franchise concept through eight European brands: Royal Tulip for fivestar hotels, Golden Tulip for the four-star category “business” or “resort,” Tulip Inn for the three-star superior category and Tulip Residence for apartment hotels. The portfolio is complemented by Louvre Hotels that brings four brands on the economic and medium class segments, respectively Premiere Classe for one-star, Campanile for two-star, Kyriad twostar plus and Kyriad Prestige for three-star.

Cismigiu building is now also a cultural landmark, as home for Cervantes Spanish Cultural Institute (classrooms, library, auditorium and exhibition hall) and for Humanitas bookstore. Gambrinus brewery is still undergoing renovation and it will reopen this month! The hotel has been rebuilt to the last detail to offer its customers both large and comfortable spaces and useful services. Its 60 apartments, with surfaces between 38 and 50 square meters, were designed for short- and long-term stays. Modern furniture and decoration, typical for an urban hotel blends perfectly with high-class services, honoring the beloved historic building. Cismigiu hotel is ready to welcome the businessperson, offering him the latest technology, but at the same time is designed to meet the demands of a family, even for long-term stays. Its Downtown location and 4 * classification guarantees customers an excellent quality - price ratio and a memorable experience.

THE COTROCENI PALACE

It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. Visiting hours: Nov.-Apr.: 09:00 - 17:00., May-Oct.: 09:00 19:00, every day, including Monday THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART

The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. Visiting hours: Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (May - September) 10 a.m - 6 p.m. (October - April) Closed: Monday, Tuesday THE OLD ROYAL COURT

During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

MARKETS IN BUCHAREST

One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

UDWIG GELOBTER

Dear Reader, Well, we have survived the Big Holidays, as well as half of winter. Now we are heading into what may be the worst month of the season. But, fear not! Turning our thoughts away from worries about wintry storms, we will be warmed by thoughts of celebrations soon to come. The early part of February will bring us the Chinese New Year, as well as Mardi Gras,

the Carnival Season, and those in turn will bring us right into Valentine’s Day. Yes, none of these are Romanian Holidays, but such are the effects and power of globalization and international marketing, that they have assumed a large and growing role in retail business.

While the second half of February will be calmer as we enter the Lenten Period, at the end of February we have the Romanian version of Valentine’s Day- Martisor, and the shops as well the street corners of Bucharest will blossom with red trinkets and flowers, the small signs of affection Romanians bestow upon their beloved ladies. Of course these days, many will be accompanied by chocolates and sweets, another boost for the confectionery industry. Our ladies will be recognized yet again in early March as we celebrate International Women’s Day. In the USA, the Army has just decreed that women are fully equal to men, and can take their place on the battlefield, along side male soldiers. I am not sure how I feel about that personally, but I do hope that the era of “battlefields” is behind us, and the decision will not need to be tested. On the economic front, the reduction of interest rates by the Central Bank and the concomitant availability of money will hopefully begin to bear fruit this spring, and provide a needed boost to the housing industry. If there was only a way to convert the hot air and noise produced by our squabbling politicians, as they fight over pieces of the ever diminishing public “pie” into energy, we could all stay warm this winter. But, I am afraid that the December elections only reinforce the old French proverb “Le plus ca change, le plus ca rest le meme”. To close on a positive note, if our ski areas are not overwhelmed with to much snow, this will be a great time to make a day or a weekend trip to the nearby ski areas, in Austria, Serbia or Bulgaria, get some exercise and enjoy the clean fresh winter air. Reasonable prices and short wait times for ski lifts await you. Enjoy your stay in Bucharest, and don’t forget to take a gift for your beloved back home with you Ludwig Gelobter, Publisher ludwig7254@gmail.com
