REAL ESTATE 5. NEW HOUSE VS. OLD HOUSE!

If I had been in Japan during this period, or even in Washington, I should have been directed to attend the feast of blossomed cherry tree, which every year enjoys the glances and souls of many tourists and resident. But in fact I feel myself more and more tourist in my country, because I cannot stop being amazed at what my eyes see every day here. Policy remains the mainstay of the contemporary Romanian reality, although it hasn’t brought us great achievements and joy lately. And we are in an election year in which if we get something, we will be asked back tenfold. Yet we fail to rid of the TV screen at political issues. There are families in which there are even disputes on the subject. Film would be the choice of the woman, while politics for the spouse, or the men would watch a soccer game, while his wife wants politics! We are lucky with this spring when we got rid of the snow, but many of us will forget to look at blossomed cherry trees, or whether we look we will not see the essence of the new cycle of life irruption with the triumph of the sun on the night. Again we need to thank the Lord (who else?), at least those who still have relatives or houses at countryside, and peasants, which wake us to real life. We visit them before Easter hoping to get a piece of lamb, organic style raised (!), or even a few slices of fresh cheese, organic also, and we find out from them that the vine has budded, the cherry or apple trees bloomed, while the onion and lettuce are rising! We don’t always understand those words, a sign that we have removed from the village too much, but for the moment we enjoy the joy of our relatives. We even remember that recently, during the winter, we have heard on TV on the economic growth from last year, due to the agriculture, and now we realize again that agriculture it’s also this, with the budding vine, blossomed cherry and apple trees, onion and lettuce which rises and grows! City tumult took us too far from nature and its simplicity, and a weekend in the mountains is not enough to return us to normal. A visit to relatives in the countryside before Easter is much more useful! We learn so that you can live with less politics and TV, because the Romanian peasant knows what is wrong (most times), or good, when it’s reality, most times in his wallet! Here I came, as in Tokyo and Washington, also to the essence of the blossomed cherry trees!

Also this year, Bucharest City Hall has supported Earth Hour campaign and urged city residents to put out the lights and electronic equipment being in stand-by on March 31, between 20:30-21:30. On this occasion, the City Hall has organized an exhibition of drawings by students of the School no. 2 “St. Maria” on Earth Hour theme in the lobby of Howard Johnson hotel, while in the second half of March, Bucharest City Hall promoted the event in 8 schools, offering students information on the importance of reducing power consumption and resource protection . In 2012, at least 41 cities in Romania celebrated Earth Hour, in all these cities, municipalities interrupting lighting at public institutions and iconic buildings, and promoting the idea of reducing energy consumption. In Bucharest lights went out, symbolically at: Parliament Palace, Romanian Athenaeum, National Opera, Central University Library, National Library, Bucharest City Hall, along with dozens of offices of private and public companies. Crispus band from Sibiu, came to Bucharest for a fire show with the occasion of Earth Hour celebration. In Izvor Park we witnessed a fireworks show with unique visual effects, made by Crispus - The Art of Fire. After he was appointed in 2009, Earth Hour Ambassador in Romania, in this fourth edition of the event, Zoli Toth (SYSTEM band member) has again advocated that Romanians should put out the lights to save the planet. In the context of the international campaign “I Will If You Will,” he promised to produce a song inspired by the Romanian folklore. “If we all Romanians shall work in the same team, is one small step for a greener future. I hope next year to celebrate Earth Hour on this new song, “said Zoli Toth.

following the first full moon after the vernal (spring) equinox was true in 325 AD, when it was established by the Council of Nicea. However, the course of history has modified the meaning of this instruction. Historically, Western churches used the Gregorian Calendar to calculate the date of Easter and Eastern Orthodox churches used the Julian Calendar. This was partly why the dates were seldom the same. Easter and its related holidays do not fall on a fixed date in either the Gregorian or Julian calendars, making them movable holidays. The dates, instead, are based on a lunar calendar very similar to the Hebrew Calendar. While some Eastern Orthodox Churches not only maintain the date of Easter based on the Julian Calendar which was in use during the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea in 325 A.D., they also use the actual, astronomical full moon and the actual vernal equinox as observed along the meridian of Jerusalem. Romania is in for a treat. On April 21, Romexpo Bucharest will be turned into The Ocean of White for the debut of Sensation Romania. ID&T has joined forces with local promoter Events Romania to bring here what promises to be an unforgettable night. Since the turn of the century, Sensation has been building an international dance music platform. Greeg & Onuc are two DJ’s that have been active in the Romanian scene for a long time now. They host a radio show on Romania’s most popular radio station and tour together, rocking clubs all over the country. Pete Tong has a career which mirrors the story of dance music over the last 25 years. For Pete, the past 2011 represented a significant milestone - BBC Radio 1 hold a special 12 hour takeover on the station celebrating Pete’s 20 years on their airwaves, in March he held his Miami Pool Party, and he’s released two new compilations, Future Underground and All Gone Ibiza ’11 on Defected. He also launched a Las Vegas residency at Encore Beach Club, re-launched his iconic FFRR label at Warner Music, headlined Glastonbury’s dance tent and curated his own tent at the world-famous and the UK’s coolest Bestival festival, launched the All Gone App and mixed Mixmag’s covermount CD to round off the year. It’s clear why Pete is often referred to as the worlds leading ambassador for electronic music. Fedde Le Grand, a regular at the Sensation events, knows how to please the Sensation crowds all over the world. This international superstar will light up the event once again! Eric Prydz, a well-respected DJ and producer, scoring mainstream and underground hits at the same time With numerous chart topping productions, he stormed the DJMag Top 100. Meanwhile he’s been steadily dropping credible progressive house and techno tracks on his own highly acclaimed labels, Pryda and Mouseville. Eric Prydz is about combining signature basslines with catchy hooks and enchanting melodies, ideal music for Sensation. Hardwell exploded on the scene last year. Being a rising star in Holland for several years now, he had his international breakthrough in 2011. Scoring a massive hit with Tiesto, remixing Martin Solveig, Dada Life and Taio Cruz and reaching the 24th position in the well known Dj mag 100, Hardwell is here to stay. real estate

New House vs. Old House! Market studies conducted by Promo Seconda, real estate developer of DaCasa Residence complex, shows that Romanians prefer to purchase a new home at the expense of one from secondhand market. Only 36% of this year respondents at Promo Seconda survey are still interested in buying an apartment built before 1990. The percentage is almost equal when it comes to buying a new home in a block or one house. More market researches conducted during the recently concluded year, gave real estate developers more confidence in the sales of new homes. Romanians’ preferences remained also in 2012, the purchase of apartments completed in recent years, even

if the number of homes sold was not much different from 2010. “From the information obtained through this year studies the company has clearly observed that Romanians still want a new home. But some obstacles, such as lending, which stops a better sale of the apartments,” says Mauro Lufino, CEO of Promo Seconda, real estate developer of DaCasa Residence complex. The first company survey showed that 64% of respondents are interested to buy a new home built after 2008, and only 36% are willing to buy an old apartment, built before 1990. Most (59%) of respondents in 2012 would be willing to pay up to 55,000 Euros for a new home (2-3 bedrooms). 27% can afford to pay between 56,000 to 60,000 Euros for the same apartment, while 11% of respondents could even pay 65,000 Euros and only 3% “guarantee” that paid 70,000 Euros for two or three bedroom house dreams. “I noticed that we fit perfectly into what they want our future and, why not our potential customers. Prices for apartments in the DaCasa Residence start at 42,500 Euros and reach 70,000 Euros,” says Mario Lufino. Company representative says also that the area of the apartments is between 57 and

85 square meters, and houses at the ground floor also have a garden between 14 and 91 sqm. The survey also shows that the percentages are almost equal when it comes to buying a home in a block or one house. 52% of respondents said they are looking for an apartment, and 48% dream of a garden house. In the complex DaCasa Residence central villas has a built area of 123 square meters and the side- has a built area of 130 sqm. The prices start at 91,500 Euros and reach 105,000 Euros. The survey conducted between January 9 to 16, 2012, for 992 people aged between 20 and 47, only in Bucharest. Promo Seconda company invest about six million Euros in the real estate complex DaCasa Residence, which construction will be completed in late 2013. The project is built on a total area of over 23,000 square meters, on Chitilei Road, just 10 km away from Bucharest and 30 minutes from the University area.

Everybody Enjoy Easter Traditions! 6 Bucuresti what, where, when

www.bucurestiwww.ro

Easter will arrive soon. Hardly recovering from the rush begun by a March full of flowers, “martisoare (a small traditional talisman given off on March 1, in Romania) and feminine presents , we already have to start preparing red or painted eggs and go shopping to get something new for Easter. Although I know that people no longer use to return to villages or to the middle of small communities where traditions are upheld and where Christian customs are reiterated every year, whether they are city dwellers or not, even today, people follow the customs and continue to guide their existence according to them. In a way, despite the fact that the forms are different, the customs and their

The Mythical Easter

symbolic significance are the same. Everyone participates as best they can and perhaps as best as they know how, but fundamentally, no one is left out of this celebration. In order to forget about the rush of our day to day lives and to feel the celebration, it is sometimes enough to enter the story and read a few beautifully crafted lines in a holiday atmosphere.

Red eggs, “pasca” (matzoh) and lamb, are well known ritual meals that accompany our Easter dinners. However, it is not food that matters for the most important Christian holiday, but the actions that accompany them and their meaning. Red egg tapping, bread dipped in wine almost automatically accompanied by the sign of the cross, that you taste after a night spent in church when you re-live the Passion. The bread and wine that grandma used to call “communion” would frighten and fascinate me all at once because, at that moment, it was the body of Christ, the glass of wine and the slice of “cozonac” (pound cake) whose clinks would bring our welfare, health and courage for the months to come. All these actions together would help bring tranquillity into our family and the lives of our dear ones. I do not refrain from believing that Holidays are the cultural part of each human being. We all have memories related to holidays and, aside from the great Easter, we all have our own Easter, our own personal mythology. Mine was with little red dresses, patent leather sandals (also red), white veil tufts my mother used to make for me, grandparents, new things and playtime while going under the table in church. Then Resurrection. The glass of red wine, the cracked red egg, the communion and the tender lamb roast and tripe and many stories around the never ending dinner table. This is why, this time, I went for something perhaps less conventional for most of you out there (conventional as in regular). Thus, I will tell you two stories that are very dear to me. One sounds very much like a legend and the other is a true success story. www.bucurestiwww.ro

Where Do Sacred Foodstuffs Come From?

I know that everyone, or most people, associate Easter traditions with the moment of Jesus Christ’s resurrection in Christianity. However, in Great Britain, many of the Easter traditions originate long before Christianity occurred. When trees would start blooming, pagan ancestors, or non-Christians - to be politically correct - would celebrate the coming of spring and would bake special patties for Eosturmonath (you pronounce it!). Eosturmonath were rituals marking the rebirth of nature. Eostre was the goddess of fertility for Scandinavians. The symbol of the goddess is none other than… the rabbit. This rabbit of the goddess is a sort of predecessor to the cute little Easter bunny. Nature, at that time was still dormant, and would not offer any greens, fruits or vegetables, and animals would not give an abundance of milk that people could use to prepare their meals. To find a solution for their food shortage, people would burrow into nests in search of wild birds’ eggs. And since back then, as well as now, things in the life of mankind were part of the ritual, children were the ones who searched for eggs, they were told that the bunny, the symbol of the goddess, is the one who hid the eggs from them. In Alsace, a large part of Germany, and even in Transylvania, the tradition that the small rabbit hides eggs from children is still maintained, and they must look for them, racing in real competitions. On the other hand, the egg is the most eloquent and the strongest symbol of fertility, of new and fragile life. And, through Christianity, it has become the central element in Easter holidays. Speaking of ritual food, the dough marked with the sign of the cross existed before Christianity as well, however, obviously with another meaning. People would mark the dough with this sign because it was supposed that it helped it rise better, except that the sign was not related to Christ, but in pre-Christian times, it represented the division of the year in its four seasons. It can thus be said that Easter eggs and Easter patties are actually contaminates; they are examples of the manner in which, in certain areas, Christianity has undertaken and adapted pagan symbols in its own rituals specific for the Easter holidays.

Easter Lamb

In predominantly Catholic European countries, the etymology of the word “Easter” comes from the Hebraic “pesach”, marking the moment when the Jewish people crossed the Red Sea. However, during the last dinner, Jesus told his apprentices that He was the Easter lamb, the sacrificed animal that Israelis ate on the “Passover” celebration. In Greece, a soup prepared out of lamb entrails is eaten on Easter. Greece and Russia are mostly Orthodox countries, similar to Romania, however lamb reigns supreme in festive Easter meals in Roman-Catholic countries as well. Such a wide spread custom indicates, without a trace of doubt, an extremely deep routed tradition, originating in an agricultural calendar. The egg and the rabbit certainly do not come from Christianity, irrespective of their forms, ingredients and their preparation as Easter food, ritual or not. For example, the French have a “sweet” Passover lamb, a sort of biscuit similar to ginger bread, shaped like a lamb, covered in a foamy marshmallow “fur”. The “egg fight,” a specific Easter custom is not only known, but still practiced today. In a medieval ritual, the Chester Bishop and the vicar would arrive at the cathedral on Passover Sunday armed with eggs to throw at the choir boys during sermon. The latter would in their own turn come well prepared to put up a fight against the “bombing” and then, after a good bath, they would all join at dinner with Easter eggs.

The Pride of the Easter Feast - Pasca

Preparing by lent and prayer for 40 days, Christians now welcome with joy the “greatest holiday” of all: the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. After having enjoyed the preceding moments of the great celebration, Christians celebrate the Holy Week, also called Passion Week, which brings about the long awaited celebration of the renewal of the spirit. Within this time interval, Christians receive the communion, they commemorate the dead, and they fast even more rigorously, since this is the time when Christ was betrayed, caught and crucified. On Good Friday, many people even hold the Black Fast. At the same time, there are completed the preparations for Easter Sunday and for the Bright Week, when the world celebrates the victory of good over evil. Paste, which is the Romanian word for Easter, comes from the Latin pascha, taken over, in its turn, from the Greek paskha, which is a translation of the Hebrew word pesah (“Passover“). The Jewish holiday dates back in the haze of time, and it commemorates the liberation from the Egyptian slavery, when Moses and the Israelites left towards the Promised Land, where they settled after a peregrination of 40 years in the desert. For Christians, Easter represents the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who suffered willingly and who was crucified for the purification from sins of all descendants of Adam, so that they could be given the chance of eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. In the Christian tradition, on the third day after the crucifixion, Jesus rose from the dead, and 40 days later, he ascended to heaven, at God’s right hand. In time, many cultural non-religious elements were included in the Easter celebration, and nowadays, Easter is no longer celebrated only by Christians. For Christians, the lamb, the Easter bread (Pasca, in Romanian) and the wine are symbols with new meanings: the lamb is Jesus Christ, who accepts the sacrifice. The Easter bread torn into pieces and the wine poured thereupon signify Christ’s sacrifice. The Pasca is the traditional pound cake prepared by Romanian women at Easter, from unleavened dough. The Easter bread is prepared on the eve of the Resurrection, on the Saturday before the Easter day, to keep it fresh. A legend from Bucovina says that, when Jesus Christ used to travel with his disciples, they spent the night at a peasant’s house, who filled their bags with food. The Apostles asked

8

Christ when Passover would come, and he answered that Passover should come when they find corn flour bread in their bags. Looking in the bags, the apostles saw that the peasant had given them pieces of corn bread, and they knew that Passover had come. Today the Pasca is made from carefully chosen wheat flour of the best quality. The unleavened pound cakes prepared for Easter may be round – reminding the linen of the baby Jesus – or rectangular – the shape of His tomb. Small pound cakes, called “Easter buns” are prepared for children. Eggs, cheese, sugar, raisins and cinnamon are a few of the ingredients used to prepare this special variety. The Pasca may be decorated with the Christian cross, but also with flowers, leaves, birds, made from dough and baked on the golden brown crust of this special cake (in Bucovina). Women bake it only for Easter. They usually insert cow cheese, rarely sheep cheese, salted and kneaded with yolk, wiped and smoothed with egg on top. The cake is taken to the church to be blessed by the priest during the Easter service. Traditionally, the Pasca is prepared to be taken to the church by cutting it into small pieces, wrapped in napkins. Thus, it is related in the orthodox tradition with the Eucharist bread, based on which the communion is prepared and from which the sacramental bread is cut into pieces at the church. The Pasca pieces are taken home and kept to help the faithful participate to the blessing of the Lord, since they have the power to chase away illnesses and troubles. With cheese and raisins, chocolate and almonds - nonconforming variants of the original, with milk and sour cream or nuts and chocolate chips, with vanilla, rum, orange or lemon, with figs or dates, or even rice, the Pasca represents, together with the lamb steak and the red-dyed eggs, the particularity of the Easter dinner, crowning the joy of the Paschal celebration.

Romania at Easter Time

Most Romanian Easter traditions are the same all over the country. Still, each region has some specific customs and practices. Typically associated with the natural beauty of the areas, some of them legendary, the Easter Holidays should encourage you to explore Romania. Are you going to be in Romania for Orthodox Easter this year? Then you could spend this holiday in a unique and unforgettable way. Although staying in Bucharest doesn’t mean you are going to be bored, as there are many places to go and a lot of things to do, few of the old traditions have been kept alive here. If you really want to experience Romanian Easter, you need to go to villages or small towns. In Muntenia, an old belief says that on Easter the weather will be just as it is on Florii. The popular name of this holiday comes from the Roman goddess of flowers, called Flora. In the countryside, peasants make big fires on top of the hills during the Easter night. The fires are called “watch fires”, and in some villages they burn all night, the fires can be seen not only on the hills, but also the valleys. The celebrants sit around the fire, re-telling stories from the life of Jesus. The boys and the young men jump over the fire, so that witches will have no power over them. A washing ritual takes place on Easter morning, the villagers put a red egg in a basin or, in some places, a silver coin, over which they pour fresh water brought from a well. All the members of the family wash themselves, while saying: “Let me be healthy, and may my cheeks be as red as the egg; let everybody want me and wait for me as are awaited red eggs on Easter; let me be loved like eggs on Easter Day.” Then they take the silver coin and, passing it over their faces, they say: “Let me be proud and clean like silver”. The girls add to that: “Let me pass from one hand to another while dancing, like money; let me be light like the egg-shell, which floats on water”. In some villages, they also put common basil in the basin, for they say that if you wash yourself with it you will be honored like basil. Having come back from church, the family sits around the table. After eating and toasting with glasses of drink, there comes the great moment: the knocking of eggs. The head of the family knocks first with his wife, speaking the traditional “Christ has risen!”, to which the response comes right away: “He has risen, indeed!”. Sometimes add: “Let us knock eggs so we may have a beautiful Easter next year as well, and after death meet each other again in heaven”. The other members of the family follow in turn, beginning with the elderly. According to popular belief, it is well to remember with whom you knocked first, because, if you happen to get lost in a forest, all you have to do is remember the person with whom you knocked eggs first on Easter, and you will find your way back. Lunch on the first day of Easter is a chance to reunite the family, following the entire ritual. On the Easter table you will always find, beside the red eggs, the green cheese, green onion and radish salad, kell and, of course, lamb steak. One of the oldest story about coloured eggs in Romania is of the Florentine secretary of Constantin Brancoveanu, Antonio Maria del Chiaro, who, around the year 1700, was amazed by the golden color of the dyed eggs from the Court of the Muntenian ruler. The colors used for dying eggs correspond to certain symbols: RED – the symbol of blood, sun, fire, love and joy of life. BLACK – absolute stability, eternity YELLOW – light, youth, happiness, harvest GREEN – revival of nature, freshness, hope, fertility BLUE – sky, health, vitality VIOLET – self control, patience, confidence in justice A long time ago, the eggs were dyed using vegetal colors, but today chemical dyes are more typical. Vegetal colors were prepared following old recipes, passed on from one generation to another, with a great variety of methods and techniques. The materials and utensils used in decorating the eggs are extremely diverse, ingenious and vary in the different regions of the country. In some areas people boil the eggs, in others, they make a small hole and suck out the contents. Decorative eggs are also made with colors in relief (Vrancea, Putna Sucevei), embellished with glass beads (Bucovina), of wood (Neamt), of clay (Corund-Harghita) or even of plastic (Bucovina). The ornamentation of the eggs includes geometrical, vegetal, animal, anthropomorphous, as well as religious symbols. www.bucurestiwww.ro

The International Wine Fair VINVEST Timisoara 9 The International Wine Fair VINVEST Timisoara, planned this year from April 6 to 8, it’s already a traditional one for the professionals and for the public. There are already nine years since in the city crossed by Bega River gather exhibitors from Romania and from abroad, who present their products to a larger public every year, public attracted by the special events scheduled especially for them.

VINVEST Timisoara is the most comprehensive event dedicated to wine industry in Romania. In the exhibition’s space from the Regional Business Center Timisoara important representatives of this important segment promote their products both to the connoisseurs and wine amateurs, and to those who want to learn how to properly taste the wine, which are its qualities or how you match a wine with your preferred food.

The VINVEST Timisoara fair tried to bring every year with novelties. From marketing through two-dimensional codes (CODE2WINE) to the wine tourism map, all editions had at least one new element.

Romanian wines attraction

In 2012, in its ninth year of existence, VINVEST focuses on attracting the public to the Romanian wines. How to grow more the confidence in the quality of the local products if not through direct contact of the consumers with the winery, the producer, or with the wine? The first novelty of this year is the event of tasting the wines present in the fair. Over a hundred special guests attended on March 15, a special evening of wine tasting for the products participating in the ninth edition of the International Wine Fair Vinvest Timisoara. In the Europe Hall of the Regional Business Center Timisoara, consuls, managers of companies with Romanian or foreign capital, leaders of institutions and journalists could test the preview of 70 wines offered by 15 Romanian and foreign producers. From these 70 wines offered, 15 were from the 2011 production. These wines, along with many others from 24 producers and distributors, will be tasted in the three days of the International Wine Fair Vinvest, from April 6 to 8, also at the Regional Business Center Timisoara.

Wine tourism west-Romania

The second novelty in VINVEST will take place during the fair, April 6-8. A group of Romanian and foreign journalists specialized in tourism will arrive in Timisoara in a working visit to participate at the fair, but also to visit the cellars from west-Romania. The journalists will also attend a scheduled press conference after the official opening of the fair, on April 6. Because one of the involvements of VINVEST organizers was the promotion of the cellars as tourist destinations, the journalists specialized in tourism will be able to find news and recent changes in the wine tourism.

Face the best wines and spirits

Although no longer a novelty, but rather a reference to tradition, VINVEST announce that this year will also organize the VINVEST National Wine and Spirits contest, on April 4-5. As one of the few competitions that managed to preserve continuity and to comply with regulations imposed by the International Vine and Wine Organization (OIV), VINVEST competition remains a landmark in promoting quality wine and spirits.

MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE PARLIAMENT PALACE

THE COTROCENI PALACE

It is a part of the Cotroceni National Museum. The Cotroceni Palace, church and monastery reflect a three-century old history that interweaves political, military, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects, with the general evolution of Romanian society. The palace was built in the 17th century by the Prince Serban Cantacuzino. The Cotroceni National Museum exhibits a rich range of objects of art, illustrative of the Romanian decorative art. The Cantacuzino space is most suitable for organizing presentations of old art objects that can only outline the exceptional artistic accomplishments of a distant epoch.

It is the second largest administrative building in the world (after the Pentagon) in terms of all-out surface: 330,000 m2. It was built between 1984 and 1989 by a team of architects led by Anca Petrescu. and was destined for the members of the Communist Party; Besides offices, Ceausescu planned to make personal living places, so the Palace’s surface would have been bigger. The building currently houses Romania’s Parliament. Visiting hours: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday (By appointment only)

APRIL 2012

Supplement of Bucuresti what, where, when magazine

Feel the Rhythm There are an increasing amount of foreign people arriving in Bucharest to simply have fun and enjoy themselves. Many European travellers can testify that some of the greatest and cheapest nights can be had here. Lipscani, the historic centre of the town has witnessed a recent revival with many of the older clubs being refurbished or completely rebuilt. Many of these new venues would not seem out of place in Paris or London. Like the most International cities, Bucharest has a good selection of bars, clubs, cafes, theatres, casinos and many other places of entertainment. Other Bucharest districts are also quite animated, with lots of people on the street late into the night. If you want to have a perfect night, you can start with a romantic dinner in one of the restaurants around the old centre. “Caru` cu bere”, for instance, is one of the most representative restaurants of our capital, it is a true living legend and also one of the oldest beer houses in Bucharest. It was opened for the first time in 1879 and it is one of the few places in Bucharest where it seems that nothing has changed. After that, you can continue with a show or play at Rapsodia Theatre. Then… enjoy your night in a club or in a bar with your friends. There is a wide variety of bars and pubs scattered all over the city and it is not always easy to choose between Irish, English, Latino or the more exotic among the range of watering holes available. There are also traditional Romanian bars and restaurants. Cyber cafes are becoming

ever more popular in Bucharest and these are generally open quite late. There are plenty of nightclubs catering for all tastes and smart dress is not necessary, jeans are acceptable. Clubs and bars serve alcohol until 5 or 6 in the morning and the minimum age for drinking is 18. Despite much recent renovation a real sense of history remains, many of the older inns or taverns have become pubs and clubs, but walking around this area can still transport you into the past, to the true beginnings of the city and its nickname, ‘Little Paris’. Now you will find here coffee shops, restaurants and bars where you can drink a hot tea or a good coffee.

You can choose a bar where you will listen to traditional Romanian singers like Maria Tanase. The atmosphere is quite calm here in the night, perfect for relaxing with friends. As far as clubs are concerned, from electro to live rock, you will find anything you wish in Bucharest! They are the best and their secret is that they never let you stop dancing, all night you feel so good that you believe you are the greatest dancer in the world. When you visit Bucharest to find some fun, you will feel an explosion of happiness, everyone is friendly because everyone is dancing with a beer in their hand. www.bucurestiwww.ro

Copenhagen, Geneva or Bucharest An Expat’s Point of View

A

lthough there are some important aspects that have not changed in the Romanian Capital in the last years (sidewalks are still not clean, there are no bicycle tracks, there isn’t enough lighting on the streets, nor enough parking places), Bucharest occupies the 14th place among the top of European cities which are preferred by the citizens of other countries who live there, as Roxana Lupu tells in her article in “Evenimentul Zilei”, titled “The Capital, More and More Loved by Expats”. The city is more and more appreciated thanks to the quality of security, housing and health and this is the reason why expats want to work and even settle here, the same thing being true for another East-European city, Bratislava, the Capital of Slovakia, as shown in a study by ECA International, a Human Resource company. “There are better restaurants, more concerts by international stars, more shopping. Life has improved considerably”, says Tom Murray, who came to Romania 15 years ago and has become a successful businessmanin the textile industry. He also believes that, even if prices have gone up a lot recently, life is still cheaper here than it is in Western Europe or in the United States, and Bucharest has the charm of a European Capital. Nevertheless, in Tom’s opinion the cost of basic goods is a major problem. The things used by the middle class now carry the price of luxury goods, and the cost of utilities has increased dramatically. For the Romanians, as well as for the expats, the quality of life depends on the wages they earn. If the wage is one of thousands of Euros per month, they can say they live well, but if it is a middle income one, even an expat faces the tough realities of daily life, thinks Tom: “If you have money, you can do anything you want in Bucharest: you hire people to manage your daily business, you eat in the best restaurants, you travel overseas or to other Romanian cities on weekends.” Nevertheless, he thinks that Bucharest cannot be considered the most sophisticated European Capital yet. Another businessman, Christopher Troxler, who has lived in Romania for five years, fell in love with Bucharest as soon as he got here. “It was love at first sight”, he says. “I simply liked the atmosphere.” Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark, holds the first place among the preferences B Bucuresti what, where, when

of expats, shows the study mentioned above. In the top ten places are cities in Switzerland and Germany, such as Geneva, Basel and Bern, and respectively Dusseldorf, Bonn and Munich. The expats coming from Asia have their own top list: Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, in Australia, as well as two regions,

from Japan, Kobe and Yokohama. Hong Kong and Shanghai, in China, occupy places 15 and 78, respectively. In the Middle East, expats prefer Manama, the Capital of Bahrein, and Dubai and Muscat. Bagdad, the Iraqui Capital, holds the last place in the world, number 300, because of the precarious security level.

Massage: Relaxation & Healing

M

assage involves systematic stroking, rubbing and kneading of the soft tissues of the body in an effort to induce a state of total relaxation. Despite some misconceptions, massage has become more accepted as a means to relieve minor physical problems. Although massage has sometimes been discredited, by advocates of modern medicine, it has recently been growing in acceptance. Massage has been shown to help maintain stability and enhance performance in nearly all of the body’s major systems. The muscular, skeletal, circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems can be positively affected by massage. The theory behind massage is the relief of muscle tension, and that relaxation of the body will allow for a faster healing process. Massage can increase and improve circulation to damaged tissue areas. People who play sports know that it is important to stretch and relax muscles for peak performance, and the same idea underlies the massage process.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of massage, as any amateur can confirm, is the relaxing effect it can have on tense muscles. The smooth stroking motions and the kneading of muscles relieves tension, loosens joints and improves circulation, all of which are beneficial for good health. Of course it is recommended that people not replace necessary medical treatment with a massage. Sometimes medical conditions that could easily be cured by a simple medical treatment are identified as a simple tight muscle or something similar. Although massage does have positive medical benefits, in most cases it is not a replacement for modern medicine. The history of massage dates back almost as far as recorded history. For thousands of years some form of massage or the “laying on of hands” has been used to helpl the sick. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, massage was one of the principal methods of healing and relieving pain. Generally, if you are in good health and just feeling a little tense, a massage may be a good way to go.. www.bucurestiwww.ro

The City Offers

s much as work and stress as may represent your usual day, as much as you may feel that you are lost between meetings, important decisions, projects and work plans, you must admit that you sometimes think about possible moments of relaxation, with everything that might include. Whether a comfortable sofa suddenly comes to your mind, or you imagine yourself in front of a promising and dynamic TV or movie screen, or you think of the future coffee on a terrace

with a dear companion, or new clothes to choose or to try on, the fast workflow is interrupted by such flashes. I would gather this entire complex into a single word: entertainment. There may not be many people who ask themselves “What does entertainment mean today”. Once the word covered something far less complicated than today. It designated a way of spending spare time in a pleasant and relaxing way. But now, when everything is compacted into smaller and smaller time units, the appearance of things changes daily, and the idea of spare time is more and more vague and almost about to be extinct. So it’s no wonder that anything that suggests spending time in a different manner than working can be considered entertainment. Especially if you leave your home for one, two or several days. What is called “business tourism” today does not exclude the desire for some time pleasantly spent. And once having arrived at a new destination, the search begins. The possibilities are, as many and as different, on all the levels and underground D Bucuresti what, where, when

structures of a city, especially if we are talking about a Capital. A living, constantly moving and changing Capital, such as Bucharest, a town in action that offers many things, but also requires a lot of tenderness. So let’s take things one step at a time. A trip to an unknown place forces you to change the stereotype move with a slower walk, combined with gaping and watching new things. Music is everywhere. And you should listen to it. Whether it is the music in a bar, or the pocket of the kit bag filled with CD’s or an mp3 player hung around your neck, music is everywhere. For those who love concerts, while the clubs gather the most renowned DJ’s of the moment to satisfy all tastes,. For many people, nightlife means lifestyle. In the ancient centre of town we can find the greatest assembly of new and cosmopolitan places, for all tastes and pockets. There is also the Green Hours formula, a brand already, where theatre, books and jazz are served together with cocktails and exquisite drinks. Bucharest is still a Balkan fair, with the same old air that mixes the Orient with the Occident, with visible and invisible faces, but it is also a European city, where more and more people come to visit. Today we have reviewed what spending your spare time can mean, and also where and how you can do it. Starting with the next number, I shall stop longer on one of the pieces of this puzzle.

MUST SEE IN BUCHAREST THE VILLAGE MUSEUM

Nestled on the shore of the Herastrau Lake, the museum displays 85 peasant homes, barns, churches and mills relocated there from all over Romania. Tall-roofed Transylvanian houses with beautifully crafted shingles sit alongside rustic wooden churches to form a unique neighborhood. The overall impression is that Romanian peasants take great pride in their work and homes. Everyday accessories: tools, butter-churns, hay forks, beer kegs and clothes are displayed inside the house. This museum can take a whole day to explore and, in fine weather, families settle down for picnics in the scenic grounds. Visiting hours: Nov.-Apr.: 09:00 - 17:00., May-Oct.: 09:00 19:00, every day, including Monday THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART

The museum is hosted by the former Royal Palace and is the most representative art gallery in Romania. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Romanian kings. Its current facade was given the finishing touches in 1937 when Carol II was King of Romania. The National Art Museum Palace is located in downtown Bucharest (in the so-called Revolution Square). The Palace displays an extensive collection of European and Romanian fine art. The European Art Gallery offers an overview of teh most important artistic movements that marked art history from the early Rennaissance till the first decades of teh 20th century. The Romanian Modern Art Gallery illustrates the development of Romanian fine arts from the first decades of the 19th century till the second half of the 20th century. Visiting hours: Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. (May - September) 10 a.m - 6 p.m. (October - April) Closed: Monday, Tuesday THE OLD ROYAL COURT

During the early Middle Ages, Bucharest became a commercial center; important enough to enable the XIV century princes to build the Princely Court – nowadays known as “The Old Court” - which formed the development core of the medieval town. The first written mention of the name of “Bucharest” dates back to September 20, 1459: it appears on a document issued from the chancellery of the famous Prince Vlad Tepes (the Impaler). By the year 1599, a new Princely Court was built. Matei Basarab (1632-1654) renovated the Old Court. By 1640, because the prince’s relations with the Turks worsened, Matei Basarab moved his Capital back to the town of Targoviste. Bucharest still remained a princely residence. In May 1654, Prince Constantin Serban Basarab (1654-1658), Matei Basarab’s successor, left for Targoviste after a rebellion of his mercenary troops, and he ordered the Old Court to be set of fire. The Old Royal Court is an outdoor site that can be visited any time. THE ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM

Is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest and a landmark of the Romanian capital city. Opened in 1888, the ornate, domed, circular building is the city’s main concert hall and home of the “George Enescu” Philarmonic and of the George Enescu annual international music festival. It has the aspect of a Greek temple with Ionic columns at the entrance. The wonderful interior with round frescoes depicts important events in Romania’s history. Extensive reconstruction and restoration work has been conducted in 1992 by a Romanian construction company and restoration painter Silviu Petrescu, saving the building from collapse. Visiting hours: every day, unless concerts or rehearsals are held.

Old department stores in Bucharest are in a transition period. Besides specialized departments, it is not unusual to find a large number of small private “Turkish-bazaar” type stands inside. Crowded but convenient because of their diversity, the Bucharest department stores offer low- to mid- sometimes even high- quality products. Galeriile Victoria 6D : 17, Calea Victoriei Bucur Obor: 2, Soseaua Colentina SUPERMARKETS There are stores in each section of town that present a complete range of products, from European to American, Arabian and Asian. Many world-wide brands are available. Prices may differ slightly because of the location of the store (downtown – periphery) or the availability of products. MARKETS IN BUCHAREST

One of the unique and more pleasurable forms of food shopping in Bucharest are the outdoor markets. Due to transportation difficulties, supplies are often copious at one market and non-existent at another. Of the markets listed here, Amzei market has the best selection and prices. It is advisable to bring your own shopping bags when shopping at the outdoor markets.

PIATA OBOR 5D : A huge covered market located behind the Bucur Obor Department Store at the intersection of Calea Mosilor and Calea Stefan cel Mare. Although the selection of goods is big, the market is crowded and appears dirty. Watch your pockets and bags. If you’re looking for a truly Romanian market experience, this is your spot. Pets, including aquarium supplies, are available, as are fishing needs (including live worms, poles, lures). Wooden and woolen goods, ceramics, clothing, as well as plants cut and growing, are available. A large pedigree dog and cat market at least once a month on the street nearest Mosilor is a fun experience. PIATA 1 MAI 5D : Located near La Fourmi on Ion Mihalache Blvd. It is a small market but has a good selection of fruit, vegetables and flowers. As with all the above markets, clothing, shoes, and household items for cleaning and cooking may also be found. Honey and other bee byproducts are a national pride of Romania and are found at all of these outdoor markets. PIATA DOROBANTILOR 5D : Located indoors on Calea Dorobantilor north of Calea Stefan cel Mare. It offers produce and flowers. The quality is better than Amzei, but the prices are olso higher. Out of season exotic fruits and vegetables can be found here. There are several other stores in this area. The meat market inside is particularly good.

much of the repertory is in Romanian, they of course also present plays in Yiddish and occasionally English. Give them a call if you have a free evening, and you too might be lucky.

An interesting aside, besides the fact that in one incarnation or another, the theater has been in existence for over 100 years, is that their website has not been updated since 2004! Ah, the luxury of being a State supported institution!

the last word

Dear Reader, You have to know how to pick your schedule, or maybe just need some luck. I am told this has been one of the worst Bucharest winters in a long time, with lots of snow. All I saw, as we were landing, were a couple of dirty snow mounds which had been pushed off the runway at Otopeni. During the few days I have been here, I have experienced beautiful spring weather. Since my last visit, the network of BIKE PATHS, has been vastly expanded, and the path actually connect to each other. There are places where you can rent a bike, and there is no better way to explore the City at your own pace than to take a leisurely bike ride from one park to the next. I was lucky in another way as well. I have wanted to see a show at the JEWISH STATE THEATER for the longest time, but my schedule and their performances had not meshed until last night. I saw a beautifully acted, professionally presented, and thoroughly enjoyable show, in a classical well maintained theater, and my ticket cost less than to see a movie in the USA. Although

Then there is the inexorable march of progress. When we first moved into our office, some 15 years ago, there was a small neighborhood market down the street from us. Family run, they recognized you as a steady customer after two visits. About three years ago, a somewhat larger supermarket opened down the street from them. It offers a bigger and more easily accessible selection of groceries, but more impersonal service. Then, a few months ago, the ubiquitous Mega Image (there seems to be one at every tramway stop), a sort of in-between store, bigger than a typical neighborhood grocery store, but not the kind of huge supermarket you find in a mall, opened across the street. So far there is “peaceful co-existence”. It will be interesting to see who survives, and for how long. Enjoy your visit more, come to one of our parks, as the flowers begin to bloom. For all of our traffic jams and polluted air, Bucharest is a green city.
