WHEN CHANGES CAN BECOME CHANCES The VIV Europe grand opening conference on day two was a great success in inspiration. Gordon Butland, director G&C Agri Consultant and chairman of the conference, introduced three speakers with valuable presentations about the future of our industry. Disruptive technologies in Agrifood Aidan Connolly, Chief Innovation Officer & Vice President Corporate Accounts at Alltech, spoke about the big evolution in technologies in the past years and years to come. Due to all these technologies the feed landscape is changing with regards to safety, transparency, sustainability, government regulation and prosumers. He showed the audience how new technologies can and will be used in the feed landscape. The crop side is 10 years ahead of livestock farming, Aidan Connolly points out. Nine technologies have the power to transform Agriculture: robots, drones, sensors, 3D printing, blockchain, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and, in the centre of all this, the Internet of Things. But how do you choose what technologies to use? Aidan Connolly’s advice: Compare costs versus benefits, understand the ancillary costs and understand if the technology will be long lasting. He concludes that the nature of innovation has changed and that technology may come from smaller new-tech companies, not just the big ones. These smaller tech companies, however have to be guided with the knowledge of the Agriculture.
UK’s largest food retailer responds to welfare challenges John Kirkpatrick, Agriculture manager for Poultry and Eggs at Tesco PLC, described the retailer’s actions to ‘drive improved performance in a competitive retail environment’. The challenges faced by UK-based food retailers at present include the effects of Brexit, disease risk, the transition to non-cage systems and pressures from welfare extremists. Tesco will remain focused on serving customers better every day and sees opportunities in quality, value, innovation and service. It works intensively with its suppliers on data analysis. Kirkpatrick emphasised the importance it attatches to maintaining the trust of its suppliers, as well as of consumers. His conclusion: the future is one of challenge and ultimately opportunity. PERSONALITY AWARDS At the grand opening conference on Thursday 21st of June, Positive Action Publications announced the winners of the personality awards 2018. The International Hatchery Practice - VIV Europe Breeder Personality Award 2018 goes to HatchTech’s founder Tjitze Meta. He received this award for his pioneering work on breeding, chick transportation and brooding since he started his company 20 years ago. He helped many PhD student with industrial placement in his company and is never happier than the moment he can talk about incubation with customers, students or the media. The International Poultry Production - VIV Europe Poultry Personality Award 2018 goes to Theo Hoen. He received this award for his work as CEO of Stork and later Marel, leading the launch and further development of the Nuova System and the Revoproportioner. In 2013 he became CEO of Vencomatic where he formed foundations for the next generation of the family owning the company. He was also a strong initiator of the Big Challenge, a charity initiative for cancer research. The International Pig Topics - VIV Europe Pig Personality Award 2018 goes to Alex Eggen. He received this award for his almost 30-year career at Intervet. Whether it was in the Dutch pig industry or up country in Thailand or China, he was always happy to share his knowledge with veterinarians and pig farmers. After his retirement he continued this willingness to share
his wisdom and expertise when he accepted a leading role in the European Symposium for Porcine Health Management. The VIV worldwide Lifetiime Award 2018 has gone to Dr. Pearse Lyons. He passed away in March 2018. Dr. Lyons was well-known as founder and President of Kentucky-based Alltech. He was widely regarded in the agribusiness sector as an innovator and industry leader. Alltech Vice President Aidan Connolly received the award on behalf of Dr. Lyons, “with regret and pride”.
Poultry ventilation in the spotlight Exhibitors at VIV Europe 2018 who supply housing systems to poultry farms internationally have been demonstrating solutions for customers in Europe and other regions who are installing semiopen houses and require a different type of ventilation. Until now, most European installations have featured under-pressure ventilation for completely enclosed buildings. The latest layer houses tend to allow the birds some outside access each day and therefore the ventilation system needs to be appropriate for that.

ONLINE MARKET PLACE FOR SELLING EGGS VIV Europe loves to present cool initiatives. Jarrin Snetselaar started a new online platform for selling and buying eggs: eggstrader.com. “From my early youth I had a ‘thing’ for eggs. When I was twelve years old I bought eggs from farmers and sold them to my neighbours. My friends biked around with newspapers and I had eggs”, tells the enthusiastic founder. He loved the trading part of is his tiny egg business and he choose to do it online. eggstraders. com offers a big sales platform for poultry farmers and packing station in several areas. The system is simple: sellers and buyers register for a free account and find each other in de online. They decide on the price and conditions and make their business deal.
OEREI: TASTY DUE TO INSECTS Feed insects to hens and their eggs will be more tasty. That at least is the philosophy of OERei. The insects are part of the natural dinner of chickens and, it gives a better taste to the egg, according to the founders. Their free range chickens have a special diet of grains, seeds and insects. According to the company this diet has several advantages. Because of their insect dinner, the chickens are stimulated in their natural behaviour, and therefore are kept occupied and interested. The insects (fly larvae) are produced locally and the accompanying seeds and grains are from Europe, no soya is used.
MSD ANIMAL HEALTH AND VINOVO WORK TOGETHER TO RAISE POULTRY HEALTH TO A HIGHER LEVEL Thanks to the combination of a broad vaccine portfolio and an innovative vaccination technique, chicks are protected efficiently and effectively against highly contagious poultry diseases. On the first day of VIV Europe, MSD Animal Health, one of the world leaders in animal vaccines, announced a cooperation agreement with Vinovo BV, specialized in hatchery automation and in-ovo vaccination technology. This synergistic collaboration, announced at a signing ceremony at the VIV Europe World Expo, will bring together the unique broad vaccine product line from MSD Animal Health and Vinovo’s new in-ovo vaccination machine to deliver a new standard for safe and effective in-ovo vaccination . This will lead to improved animal welfare, a reduction in the chance of unwanted vaccination reactions and a better protection of the vaccinated animals.
SHARING DATA = BETTER PIG PRODUCTION Data stream developments in the poultry chain are being adapted to also apply to pig production, Netherlands livestock health solutions supplier GD Animal Health has told visitors to the first day of VIV Europe 2018. Dr. Manon Houben, chief veterinarian in the company’s pig health department, reported that the first pilot trials of a pig version of its Plexus healthmonitoring software are planned to start next year. Plexus for poultry was launched in 2017, allowing large integrations in practicular to register a large variety of data in one place for analysis and to provide insights. The version being designed for pigs will analyse batches and pig flows according to clinical signs, with its data-gathering set to include the observations and treatments recorded by farm stock attendants using their cellular mobile phones. One intended output is the monitoring of antibiotic use.

ROBOTIC FARMING
A popular feature with visitors to VIV Europe 2018 has proved to be the Innovations Gallery located in the main entrance hall. Thirty innovations star in this feature. The Gallery allows visitors to look at a summary of information about each innovation in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
One of the next steps in robotic dairy farm operation will be the 3D printing of machine parts on the farm, predicted Alexander van der Lely, CEO of Lely International, at the Global Dairy Farmers Congress held on the first day of VIV Europe 2018. Robotic farming requires systems to operate 24 hours per day so that the farmer can concentrate all of his time on management matters, he told the congress. Having spare parts farm-printed as required will be just one part of the approach aimed at eliminating downtime periods.
POULTRY TAGS WIN INTERNATIONAL SALES Ever increasing demands on traceability of poultry products has brought growing international sales for Italsystems of Italy, said the company at VIV Europe 2018. Managing director Giovanna Martinelli described the delivery of customized identification products to poultry-sector customers including major groups in Bolivia and Greece, which use the company’s arrow tags to identify fresh chicken by origin.
