WELCOME
PROF. DR. LÁSZLÓ BORHY RECTOR OF ELTE
Dear University Students, Dear Sportsmen! Students of all times find it challenging to create a lifestyle that is beneficial for them, and that support them in achieving their goals. We should not make a compromise in this issue as our lifestyle defines our days and influences the quality of our whole life. As rector of the university one of my main goals is to make our institution, this important scene of university life, offer a broad variety of services that help young people build a successful future. Sport has an outstanding role in this, as it contributes to physical and mental health, develops one’s character and teaches endurance, assiduity and humbleness. It is not only a leisure time activity, but at the same time it also helps us better connect with ourselves, develop our skills and become aware of our limits. You can profit from the knowledge gained with sport in all the areas of life, and the community experience of doing sport provides opportunity to build new connections and strengthen present ones. It is worth making physical activity part of our everyday life. This brochure gives you all the help you need. I wish you a successful search and a lot of good experiences in sport!
DR. GYULA SCHEUER CHANCELLOR OF ELTE
Dear Students, dear members of BEAC! Loránd Eötvös founded the university sports club, Budapest University Athletics Club with the aim of teaching young people endurance and developing their willpower and fighting spirit. This is the most important goal of BEAC today as well: the club aims to pass on the values phrased by the founding father and ensures that students could evolve with their talent and assiduity in the appropriate environment and venue. The club raised several remarkable top sportsmen and Olympic champions in its 120 year long history. Nowadays the expectations have been rising, and that is why it is inevitable to create, run and constantly develop the infrastructure according to 21st century standards. We are happy to look back at last year’s success stories in university sport. We hope that investments in the upcoming years will contribute to more excellent achievements and a more colourful, vibrant university life. ELTE and BEAC aims to cooperate even stronger in the area of sport infrastructure and services provided for students. We also would like to achieve that the service provider function of the university - including sport possibilities - could mean an equally important role for students and employees as scientific life. In the future we are going to work together with the club to allow students gain a lot of experience in a sporty community during their university years. These were the values laid down by the founder, Loránd Eötvös. Let’s build university sport together!

WELCOME
MIHÁLY HORVÁTH PRESIDENT OF ELTE STUDENT UNION Dear Fellow Students, Let me congratulate you on your successful university admission and welcome you among the first people in the colourful and exciting community life of ELTE students. Besides sharpening your mind, sport should also be at an important place. During university years, young people willing to do sports can choose from a number of opportunities. It is worth taking advantage of that, as you could become a member of a community that will stay with you all your life. If you were active in sport previously, time to keep going under the flag of ELTE. If you are a beginner, this is the perfect time to immerse yourself and find the most suitable sport discipline for yourself. The 120 year-old BEAC is open for all university citizens, you just have to take the chance. Besides traditions and classical sports, we have to keep up with recent development. Our club was the first in the country to create a department for cheerleading. Several members of the department participated in the national team and became European Champions at the beginning of July. But do not forget about sports that are getting more and more popular, such as polefitness, modern jazz dance, aerobics or fitness sports. With these, we open a new and exciting chapter in the history of university sport. With the representatives of the The Student Union and BEAC staff, we are working non-stop on building a community of which it is worth being a member. We are looking forward to welcoming you in the team!
GÁBOR SIMON DIRECTOR OF BEAC Dear ELTE citizens! BEAC has been operating for 120 years as a club of ELTE. We are open for everyone wishing to do sports. Year after year more than 5000 people train with us. Our credo is to protect the heritage of the 19th century Hungarian sport that was based on Anglo-Saxon values, and to provide quality sport opportunities for you in the university community. BEAC is pioneer in naturalising new sport disciplines. You can try the most fashionable sports in our club, for example the brand new fitness sports and martial arts, not to mention dance sports and cheerleading. During the term, you can have fun at several sport programs starting with ELTE Sport Week between 10-14 September, where you can try all sports that we offer. This event is followed by the International Day of University Sport on the 20th September where you can choose from a number of activities all day long. Regardless of levels and goals, you can find what suits you best in our club. You have the opportunity to train together with enthusiastic amateurs and even with Olympic athletes. You may choose from about 40 recreation sports, enter championships, take sports as a credit course and the world of competitive sport is also open for you. Our professional coaches do their best to help you gain unforgettable experiences in the university atmosphere. Besides being active as sportsmen, we also count on you as fans at the matches of our first class women basketball team, but we welcome you as organisers and coaches too to the team of BEAC. University sport is for everyone!

WE DO SPORTS AT ELTE TOO
CSABA BURJÁN
STUDENT OF ELTE TTK OLYMPIC CHAMPION SPEED SKATER OF PKSE I always dreamt of becoming Olympic champion. My elementary school teachers were joking with me when I started going to trainings form Pécs to Budapest at weekends “oh, sure the time when we will cheer for you in the Olympic finals”. But I always said, okay, but the men relay never got to the Olympics before and Hungary has never won any medals in this discipline. Of course before the competition, the whole country was dreaming about it. When we qualified for the finals, we felt ourselves closer to it, but I thought a silver or a bronze medal would be more realistic. The Koreans are strong, but fortunately they were out of the picture and our dream came true. When we won the Olympics, the feeling that came over me couldn’t be compared to anything! We won the first Hungarian gold at the Winter Olympics! We made history, and couldn’t even understand what it meant. Besides sport, studying takes up my time. I study Mathematics at the Faculty of Science of ELTE. I choose this because I was interested in this filed in high school, I was good at it and I tried to find a university where I can develop in Maths, this is why I came to ELTE.
GÁSPÁR CSERE
ALUMNUS OF ELTE PPK MARATHON RUNNER OLYMPIC ATHLETE OF BEAC I’ve been in competitive sport since childhood. It was hard to imagine myself in anything else but sport. I felt it was my career and I’m happy that my environment supported me in continuing my education in this field. As my sisters studied at ELTE, it seemed so prestigious for me, and it was evident to follow in their footsteps. To the advice of my coach, I applied for the sports organiser department. I achieved a special harmony by becoming an ELTE student in 2010 as being already a BEAC athlete. I was proud to be able to study in one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the country. It was at ELTE that I started loving to study, and that is where I learnt about myself, my fundamental career goals were formed. During the university years I managed to learn effective time management and conscious fighting to achieve my goals. Meanwhile I was gradually moving forward in competing and right after my bachelor’s degree, a major breakthrough came: I could represent the country in marathon running at the Rio Olympics. It was a long way: almost 18 years of training at the 120 year-old BEAC! But there’s no stopping, the next Olympics is not far away, and I also need to make progress in my studies. In light of this, I went back to school again, I started my doctorate.

HOW CAN I JOIN SPORTS?
SPORT FOR DISABLED PEOPLE An extensive cooperation was formed at ELTE in 2016 for developing sports opportunities for disabled students at the university. Thanks to the cooperation between the Hungarian Paralympic Committee, ELTE Office for Students with Special Needs, ELTE Sports Office and BEAC, para sports received special attention at the university. The actors are trying to offer opportunities for everyone including students with disabilities. On the 20th of September, at the International Day of University Sport ELTE and BEAC will organise the Inclusive Sports Day for the 3rd time in which hundreds of able and disabled children and university students and staff can do sports together. The aim of the event is to bring able and disabled people closer to each-other with the help of sport.
The extension of integrated sporting possibilities include credit courses such as goalball and mute salsa courses, which is unique to our institution, and it allows for able and disabled people to move together. Moreover, there is a broader selection of credit sports courses for disabled students. Swimming for the disabled is an option for students with any physical and sensory disabilities. They can learn to swim or develop their swimming skills with the supervision of a professional coach. Apart from credit courses, BEAC was the first in Hungary to organise university bench press team for the disabled with the cooperation of the Fitness and Physical Performance Department.

ARGENTINE TANGO
ANDRÁS BALOGH LUCA ESZTER BALOG HEAD COACHES
The original Argentine tango - that we teach at our courses - is a refined dance where we follow each-other rather than the outside world. It is also marked by the fact that we talk about embrace in tango as opposed to posture and hold in other dances. The man (leader) and woman (follower) role are sharply distinguished, but this does not entail a subordinate relationship. By the end of the year, participants get to know the history and etiquette of tango and gain knowledge that could be used in milongas (tango dance-houses) and they will be able to experience the magic of this dance and express themselves.

I first tried table tennis at the age of 6. My enthusiasm has been unbroken ever since as all games mark the beginning of a new friendship. Table tennis is a sport that everyone has tried before. Some people took less time, others took more time to immerse themselves in its challenges. No matter if you would like to have fun and learn the basics of this sport or participate at team championships, our team is waiting for you in a really friendly atmosphere. You can keep fit at our trainings in a great team while developing your technique, concentration skills, reflexes and balance. Keep the ball popping!

BALLANCE TRAINING
KATA DÖMÉNY COACH
The aim of BALLance trainings is to develop stability and stamina and create the highest possible consciousness over the body and to treat strength and flexibility as a whole. To achieve this, we have different types of classes which have a mission on their own as well. The flow class is based on yoga asanas (poses) which flow from one asana to the other. Finally we build a flow routine by the end of the class and we keep repeating them. HIIT is a high intensity class where you are able to work the deeper layers of your muscles with the help of the balance ball. Similarly to circuit trainings, there are 5-6 repetitive routines that we practice at a given class! In the spinal flow classes, we work the spine from all directions and strengthen it. The class is not only devoted to the muscles around the spine, but we also train our whole body.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a modern combat sport based on ground fight. It is considered one of the most effective martial arts. This sport includes takedowns, scrambles, rollbacks and techniques to force the adversary surrender. During our trainings, we develop agility and strength besides learning the techniques and the fight. I recommend the training for beginners and advanced sportsmen, for those who would like to learn self-defense, do sport at competitions or for fun at a training that moves the whole body.

Cheerleading is a sport composed of dance and acrobatics. Regardless of pre-training, everyone can find the suitable exercise for themselves in cheerleading. Our team was founded in 2009 with only 6 people and until today this number has multiplied tenfold. We put great emphasis on strengthening, stretching and the dance team learns different types of ballet-based spin and jump combinations. This sport discipline develops stamina, strength, flexibility and velocity. I recommend it to everyone who would like to spend their weekday evenings in a cheerful, fantastic team. Members of the cheerleader team represent our university at various prestigious events and there are competition opportunities for those who take the trainings seriously. TRX is a fitness tool developed by the American Navy, which has become the most innovative method for developing the stabilising/core muscles and increasing efficiency. This training tool is very easy to transport and it uses everyday movements to work the whole body consciously and to make you able to do a coordinated effort against your own bodyweight. When training with this tool, all the muscles of the body work from several angles and its applicability is really wide among men and women as well!

GÁBOR ERDŐS ELTE SPORT SCHOLARSHIP HOLDER
If you like new challenges and you expect more from a sport than developing stamina, come and try climbing at university trainings. You can climb on rock or artificial wall, with or without rope, this sport also trains coordination, strength and willpower. You can try the low height bouldering in a friendly atmosphere, and we organise rock-climbing trips where you can experience the exciting open-air rope-assisted or boulder climbing. You will find your place in our small beginner or advanced groups. We start the training with the warm-up and so-called stunts (climbing routes planned for you), go on with strengthening and stretching, and we put great emphasis on the basics and develop thematically during the semester. I recommend climbing for almost everyone. No matter if you want to develop on dangerous routes or in safe environment (close to the ground), you will find the kind of climbing that suits you most.

Running is one of the most effective body shaping sport, the basis of all exercises. It gets your thoughts of problems, and is a very healthy sport. You only need a pair of shoes and let’s go! Running develops stamina, muscles, friendships, all in all, everything. At the beginning of the trainings, we discuss the given stages. If somebody is tired or destressed, they can turn back earlier, do less repetitions but everyone has to run together with others, never alone. I recommend it to everyone who would like to live a healthier life, sleep better, also for those who love challenges and want to stand under the shower satisfied after the training.

During my high school years I discovered this sport in the citadel of Hungarian volleyball, Kaposvár. I joined ELTE Volleyball Community that was transformed into a department in January 2012 when I became head of the department. Volleyball is a spectacular and popular sport all around the globe. The simple it looks, the complex it is in reality. You are working 400 different muscles while playing volleyball. It develops coordination skills, it demands ability to think in a team just like all other ball sports. Our trainings are available for all students looking for physical activity, everyone will find the level suitable for them from beginner to advanced. The trainings incorporate physical performance development and ball techniques- Students who would like to go to competitions can participate at our department tournaments and they can be admitted to competition teams. Why do I recommend it? Movement, community, game, passion, competition. Some members of our team used to watch the trainings from the gym and joined, others found a new sport love and many had volleyball present all their lives. ORIENTEERING
CSILLA HAJAS DEPARTMENT CONTACT PERSON
Orienteering is a combination on orienting and running. This is a sport in which not only physical but mental fitness is also important. With orienteering, you can develop your stamina and mental capacity at the same time. This is not only a sport but also a lifestyle that teaches you to fight, make quick decisions and focus your attention. All age groups can find the suitable category for themselves. At competitions, runners have to find a definite number of checkpoints with the help of a map and a compass. The order of arriving to the checkpoints is set but between the checkpoints you can select the route. Time is measured with an electronic chip. Orienteering is a hard sport, but it helps you fully relax and put your mind off problems. If you like nature and wish for an inclusive, nice community, this is where you want to be.
