Lorenzo Trujillo: A man on a musical mission By Roxana A. Soto

reserving the music of early Colorado and New Mexico has been musician Lorenzo Trujillo’s life mission. But in the age of rap and hip hop, it’s unclear if the next generation will be as zealous as he is of sounds that go back almost two centuries. “It’s not something that is popular out there. It’s a niche area of music,” said Trujillo, an award-winning violinist. “It’s from a time in history that people don’t necessarily relate to.” Even though Trujillo – who is also an accomplished lawyer and educator – believes this music is “going to go away,” he’s still passionately devoted to preserving and presenting the rich cultural traditions of his ancestors, and to educating others about them. To that end, over the past 40 years, Trujillo has presented thousands of concerts, lectures, and demonstrations and has written extensively about the music and dance of the Southwest. He has also recorded seven CDs. Many of them include music that has never been recorded, like “Las Cuadrillas,” a five part traditional suite featured in his latest CD “The Golden Age of the Southwest: From 1840 to Hollywood.” “Some people play golf, some people watch every sports game on TV. I spend my time on this very passionate mission to leave a path, leave footprints in the sand that say this is who we are based on who we were,” said Trujillo. Since he can remember, Trujillo has been surrounded – on both sides of his family – by music and dance from the “period when Colorado was being settled.” His grandmother, on his mother’s side, lived in Arroyo Seco, New Mexico, and she would always want to have her grandkids dance with her. So, from an early age, he learned to dance cuadrillas, waltzes, polkas – all dances from the 1800s that were staples at family gatherings, he said. “It was something we did as a family,” he added. “That’s what the key was.” His father played the guitar and his mother was a folk dancer. But it was his aunt, Eva Nuánez, whom he remembers always singing.

Manuel Martinez “My aunt was one of the most prominent and notable Latina singers and violinists in Colorado for many years,” Trujillo said. “Growing up, I learned my songs from her. We’d be in the kitchen and she’d make us warm tortillas with mantequilla and jelly and she’d sing to us and, of course, we’d start singing with her.” As he reminisced, he couldn’t help singing: “Muñequita linda, de cabellos de oro… To this day, (that’s) one of the songs that really warms my heart,” Trujillo said. Comfort music is what he calls it, and somehow it stuck with him. But, he said, “This is not a big money maker, this is for the love. This is a love and a passion.” Those two motivators pushed Trujillo to pursue a master’s degree in arts at the University of Colorado, where he established a folkloric dance program with a grant he received from the National Endowment for the Arts. From there, he went on to become a touring performer and traveled across the country singing and dancing. Through the years, he’s created and directed several folkdance companies, including Southwest Musicians and Mariachi

Alegre. In his late 30s, he decided to go back to school to add to his already impressive list of degrees. But this time, he went a completely different route by becoming a lawyer. “I came to realize that I love the arts and the arts are a way to transcend culture and reach into people’s hearts – not only Latinos, but mainstream America,” Trujillo said. “But I also knew that there were two places of true change, and that is in education and law.” Trujillo has been incredibly productive in both. As an educator, he served several years as the assistant dean of students and professional programs at the University of Colorado Law School. As a lawyer, he has received many distinguished awards for his work, including the National Hispanic Bar Association Latino Lawyer of the Year in 2007. Still, his heart is in his music. “It’s been a part of my inner soul that has always fed me, and I like it, so I still do it to this day,” he explained. Today, he is highly involved with Tesoro Cultural Center at The Fort in Morrison, which is dedicated to celebrating the rich heritage of the Southwest through lectures, workshops

and events, including its famous annual Spanish and Indian markets. He also devotes a lot of his limited free time to Hilos Culturales, an organization created to “encourage and promote the celebration of Spanish and Colonial folk music” of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. Trujillo helped create both foundations and sits on their boards. In fact, he has been involved in the creation of the majority of Colorado’s Hispanic cultural organizations in one way or another. “The music he plays, the songs he plays, the instruments they use, the way they sing reminds me of many of the performances I heard as a child in my small little hometown,” said Vincent de Baca, a history professor at Metropolitan State College of Denver whose family hails from northern New Mexico. “He’s on a mission to teach young people about the meaning of this music, which is important because it connects us with our past,” de Baca said. But both de Baca and Trujillo believe the music is dying and worry about the effects that will have on future generations. “If we’re not connected to our past, to our ancestors, we lose our identity, we lose our sense of self,” de Baca said. “Without roots, we have no anchor.” Trujillo agrees. “We have all these Hispano-Latino kids that are lost. It’s important that they know they have a rich history, a beautiful history, one of successes, achievements, prominent individuals,” he said. “We’re not just a bunch of people that have no past. sonidos que se remontan casi dos siglos. “No es algo que es muy popular. Se trata de un tipo específico de música”, dijo Trujillo, un premiado violinista. “Es de una época en la historia con la que la gente no se relaciona”. A pesar de que Trujillo – quien también es un exitoso abogado y

educador – cree que esta música “va a desaparecer”, todavía está apasionadamente dedicado a preservar y presentar las ricas tradiciones culturales de sus antepasados, y educar a otros acerca de estas. Con ese fin, durante los últimos 40 años, Trujillo ha presentado miles de conciertos, conferencias y demostraciones, y ha escrito extensamente sobre la música y la danza del suroeste. ore than 200 people attended the third annual public policy summit of the Colorado Latino Forum and the Colorado Latino Leadership Advocacy and Research Organization on Jan 7. The goal of the summit was to bring activists and community leaders together to form a public policy platform to be implemented in the coming year in areas including immigration, education, criminal justice and health. Attendees also elected board members for the CLF. Attendance at the event doubled from the year prior and included Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia, who offered opening keynote remarks, former Mayor Federico Peña, Sen. Angela Giron, D-Pueblo, Rep. Crisanta Duran, D-Denver, Denver Public School board member Arturo Jimenez and many others from the public and private sector all over the state. Olivia Mendoza, executive director of CLLARO, credited the momentum from other summits and the tough legislation

affecting Latinos in 2011 for higher turnout this year. “People really care, they just don’t know how to express it. We give them a way to do that with the forum,” she said. To decide what key issues and actions would be on the agenda in the coming year, the crowd separated into smaller groups where they focused on only one area, such as economic development and media/communications. “I loved it,” said Sonrisa Lucero, a three-year CLF board member who moderated both the LGBTQ and the energy and environment groups. She praised the level of discussion. “Everyone in these rooms is a leader. This is not a passive group.” In the LGBTQ group, one objective that rose out of the discussion was to provide community outreach and support for LGBTQ youth. Other groups focused on objectives such as pushing for the regulation of for-profit colleges, encouraging advertisers to support Latino media and stopping the hypercriminalization of Latino youth.

Janet Murguía, president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza, was one of the keynote speakers at the event. She received a standing ovation for her speech about coming together as a community to better the lives of Latinos. “I don’t want to wait for the inevitable demographic tide to bring our community to shore. I want to embrace that future now, and we need to work together to achieve it. But it can be done,” she said.

Murguía added that Latinos cannot rely solely on Democratic or Republican lawmakers to create change because both parties have taken the Latino community for granted. “We must remind them that the road to the White House runs through the Latino community.” Para leer la historia en español:

Para cuando termine el evento el 22 de enero, el 106º National Western Stock Show (exposición ganadera, equina y rodeo) habrá atraído a más de 600.000 espectadores, cientos de animales y algunos de los mejores vaqueros y animales para el rodeo diario. Cada día es distinto. Consulte el calendario de actividades y planee con anticipación para aprovechar el día al máximo con distintos tipos de rodeos, animales o eventos para niños o adultos. Este año, la exposición comenzó con dos nuevas adiciones. El sábado, los vaqueros se enfrentaron con algunos de los mejores competidores en el rodeo “Colorado contra el Mundo”. Y el Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza se llevó a cabo el domingo para celebrar la cultura mexicana. WASHINGTON – The Obama administration wants to more quickly reunite Americans with their illegal immigrant spouses and children in a move long sought by advocates but panned by Republicans as a way to push unpopular policies around Congress. Currently, many illegal immigrants must leave the country before they can ask the federal government to waive a three- to 10-year ban on legally coming back to the U.S. The length of the ban depends on how long they have lived in the U.S. without permission. On Friday, the Obama administration proposed changing the rule to let children and spouses ask the government to decide on the waiver request before they head to their home country to seek a visa to return here legally. The illegal immigrants would still have to go abroad to finish the visa process, but getting a provisional waiver approved in advance would reduce the time they are out of the country from months to days or weeks, said Alejandro Mayorkas, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The purpose is “to minimize the extent to which bureaucratic delays separate Americans from their families for long periods of time,” Mayorkas told reporters. It currently takes about six months for the government to issue a waiver, he said. The waiver shift is the latest move by President Barack Obama to make changes to immigration policy without congressional action. Congressional Republicans repeatedly have criticized the administration for policy changes they describe as providing “backdoor amnesty” to illegal immigrants. The proposal also comes as Obama gears up for a re-election contest in which the support of Hispanic voters could prove a determining factor in a number of states. The administration hopes to change the rule later this year after taking public comments. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, on Friday accused the president of putting the interests of illegal immigrants ahead of those of Americans. “It seems President Obama plays by his own rules to push unpopular policies on the American people,” the House Judiciary Committee chair said in a statement. Immigrants who do not have criminal records and who have only violated immigration laws can win a waiver if they

can prove their absence would cause an extreme hardship for their American spouse or parent. The government received about 23,000 hardship applications in 2011 and more than 70 percent were approved. About 75 percent of the applications were filed by Mexicans, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Immigrant advocates have long complained about the current system, which can split up families for months or years. And since there’s no guarantee a person will win a waiver to return, many immigrant families refuse to take the risk of going abroad to apply for one. Laura Barajas, a 42-year-old stay-athome mom in Orange County, Calif., is due to travel to Ciudad Juarez in two weeks to try to get her papers. She and her U.S. citizen husband are trying to stay positive, but she is afraid to leave him and their two young children behind. “I don’t want to be separated for a long time from my children,” said Barajas, who came to the U.S. illegally to find work, then met her future husband and stayed. “I’m not going to risk taking them to a place that I don’t even know after 18 years.” Pro-immigration activists and lawyers embraced the change, saying it would keep families together and encourage more people now in the United States illegally to emerge from the shadows and apply for visas. Some said it could even save lives. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., recalled the case of Tania Nava Palacios, who went to Ciudad Juarez — a hotbed for drug-fueled violence — with her American husband and son in pursuit of a waiver. Drug cartel members killed her husband last year, his office said in a statement. Kelly Alfaro, of Washington state, said her husband, Guillermo, waited in Mexico for eight months last year after he had his visa interview in Ciudad Juarez. “I was terrified for his safety because I know how dangerous it is there, and I had no way of knowing how long he would have to stay in Mexico,” she said. Democratic lawmakers welcomed the Obama administration’s move to change the immigration system by rulemaking after efforts at a legislative overhaul failed. “Has it taken a while? Yes. Is it happening? Yes,” said Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., who has encouraged such changes. “Am I looking forward to telling people to vote for him? Absolutely.”

And these options land squarely in three categories: high-efficiency incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs, and light-emitting diodes. “For the first time in a long time,” Paulsen says, “customers are actually going to have to think about how to buy a light bulb.” High-efficiency incandescent bulbs, also called energy-efficient halogen bulbs, are 28 percent more efficient than their predecessors, according to Paulsen. LEDs come in a variety of shapes and sizes as they have long been considered best for directional lighting. “When you’re thinking about a table lamp, you need to get a little more creative with how you design the (LED) product,” Paulsen says. “But LEDs have been received very, very well. It’s by far the most popular new bulb product.”

hile the lack of a veteran starting pitcher has left many Rockies fans uneasy about the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rotation, the progress of Juan Nicasio has been a bright spot. The right-handerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarkable recovery from a broken neck has continued in the Dominican Republic. Five months after a line drive off his head and a subsequent fall broke his C1 vertebra, Nicasio has begun facing hitters, leaving him on pace to compete for a rotation spot in spring training. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been throwing to hitters with an L screen (that provides protection),â&#x20AC;? said Rolando Fernandez, the Rockiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; director of Latin America operations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doing good.â&#x20AC;? Nicasio, 24, is throwing only fastballs and

changeups, typical of pitchers this time of year who eschew breaking balls. If there are no setbacks, Nicasio will face hitters without having a screen to protect him before spring training. Pitchers and catchers report to Rockies camp on Feb. 19. Nicasio would be a welcome addition for a rotation that will be young and inexperienced. Once viewed as a future closer by some in the Rockiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; front office, Nicasio changed minds last season by going 4-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 13 starts. More impressive, he was 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA at Coors Field before his season abruptly ended Aug. 5, when Ian Desmondâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s line drive struck him in the head, knocking him out on his feet. Surgery was required, and doctors placed a permanent metal plate in his neck for stabilization. Nicasio has shown outstanding velocity this winter, critical for a pitcher who reached

the major leagues last season because of his ability to command a fastball that regularly reached 96 mph. He has repeatedly told friends and teammates that he will return to the big leagues. If he is able to get over the mental hurdles, he would be a strong favorite to make the rotation. Footnote. Outfielder Larry Walker, a longtime Rockie and the 1997 NL MVP, received 22.9 percent of the Hall of Fame vote, falling far short of the 75 percent required for election.
