enezuelan born in 1977 as Gustavo Ferrero Moya, he graduated from a Superior Degree in Architecture in 2003, and continued working as an architectural collaborator, freelance outsoucing and architectural digital artist, both in 2D and 3D. He has participated in numerous architectural projects, both as collaborator, designer, and technical coordinator and renderer. He has had the oportunity to be a leading architect of at least three mayor projects including industrial, residential and sport facilities. But working as an architect did not take him away from his pasion for automotive and product design. In 2007 he won a third place in the International Peugeot Concourse P.L.E.A.S.E. Innovate, out of 4000 entries worldwide, chosen partly by international internet audience. The Allscape HD prototype was on the front cover of the Maxon Cinema 4D official site, the very software in which the prototype was developed, a 3D european standard software for media and design, often used by Audy and BMW. Maxon computer, asked him to offer his 3D scene as a standard for Cinebench testing hardware program. Now he is a member of both the official automotive design and engineering gallery of Maxon computer, and has a CG Choice award from the CG Society. His work has been published in many websites, including Car Body Design, and C4DES, the most important specialized magazine in the spanish language. Vito is also a Master Practitioner in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and has just finished a one-year especialization in Creative Writing at the UNIMET. As alternative activities, he does digital art and vitual sculpture. He also loves to teach both english and comic art to children, writes, illustrates children books, and compose and play music for children. From these activities he decided to use his nickname Vito, as an artistic name. Nowadays he has a growing interest in art therapy, and the possibility to make equipment for the creative expression of the dissabled. He is looking for new horizons outside of Venezuela to expand his capacities and service, wanting to step into Industrial Design to be able to make reality many ideas at his desk.

not only foresee evolutions in already seen paths, but giant leaps, in almost all fields, giant changes of direction and even opening to new dimensions of thinking and feeling, that need to be created in order to see real positive changes.

A world of contrast.

No consciousness means no capacity for risk taking, no sacrifice, no higher values, no love, no inspiration. And off course no capacity for self correcting in a meaningful way.

Engineering, urbanism and architecture, play a key role in this responsability we have to our enviroment. And of course a mayor impact comes through industrial design, including industries themselves, products of all kinds, especially the transportation industry wich is the responsible for most of the pollution nowadays.

ne of the characteristic of the corporate world is the conception of production as a machine. The problem with a machine, no matter how beautifully designed, is that it has no consciousness.

There are many industries and corporations founded under certain higher values like effitiency, respect, delivery on time, certain ecological concearns, “innovation” (standing for steady evolution of proven facts), but the thing is that the machine that is meant to deliver those values to the masses, often outstands the capacity for any individual to change the allready in-motion, never stopping machine, even for the often well-meaning founders or individual developers.

Industry creators and leaders have a tremmendous responsability over the planet´s state. And if profit is going to be the only priority, in an almost childlish race for “being more succesful than others” in the years to come, well, the planet will not take it as joke. Animals are dying, the water is being polluted, and the very air that we breathe is being poisoned with an excess of carbon.

Off course this is not new, I am stating it because I feel it is not the only way to go.

There are certain companies that show a tremmendous momentum, led by relatively young people, that are making a difference. Nevertheless they also can be the monsters of tomorrow and also can be the ones that are not interested in innovation or risk taking anymore, but only concetrate themselves in putting others down. That´s why I sense that a whole change of spirit is needed in the productive apparatus, be it the industry or the corporate world, if we want to still have a planet for our children to live on.

I

Our Childlish Arrogance

The power and economic elites, attached to their ways of living and thinking, in their incredible arrogance, think they can continue to delay mayor innovation. Do not get me wrong. This arrogance that they show is similar than the arrogance of a little child, that thinks he knows everything.

It is not a matter of evil, it is matter of being profoundly asleep or deluded. The same arrogance is shown by the ignorance of a consumer that buys whatever is easy, delightful, tasty. Beautiful exteriorly, but in complete lack of consciousness of the consequences of his or her choice. So consumers pamper the industry, and the industry pampers consumers. Who is going to awake first?

One example of this phenomenon is depicted in the magnificent movie based on Dr. Seuss´ character “The Lorax”. For the ones that didn´t see the movie, I highly recommend it. ✳Also in the Pixar Movie “Wall.E.” But the forced delay of change cannot be forever, and the forces of life itself are going to show us that no matter how beautifully designed is our self created world from the outside, there are major flaws, that make us unhappy and empy inside at the end. There is tremmendous inequality in the world nowadays, and the levels of consumtion are ridiculously contrasting.

Nevertheless I love beautiful things, and I love sharing them with others, so I think that design can make a difference in all scales of human experience and production. Does this sound naive? I think if the Wright brothers did it, all dreams are

n this world of contrast, some live in the human transit of limitation, economical uncertainty and lack of hope. This ones suffer mostly phisical limitation. Others, on the other hand, live in what I like to call, the “confortability prison”, in which everything around them is so designed, so prepared, that their entire lives are on a fast track to a predefined destination, preventing them to discover even their own individuality and expression, taking away any risks, hindering the development of their own talents or their own discoveries of new land. Silly isn´t it, that one of the places this tends to occur the most nowadays is here in America (among many other rich nations), among the very people that should stand for truth, happiness and freedom. Off course this is the free choice of each person. Allthough I think you can never make a free choice out of ignorance.

The Question We Cannot Formulate Yet So, this confronts ourselves with a dilemma. Is not design to ease our lives?

Do our lives actually get too confortable to the point that we get asleep? What is the sane balance in between? Or maybe: Is there another question beyond, that we cannot even formulate yet, but that could lead us to a leap answer?

That question we cannot formulate yet, is the key to my work.

The question we cannot formulate yet is a maningful one, the one that can lead to something new.

The question we cannot formulate yet is a silent question, and it cannot be known but felt, mostly in our hearts. Then the answer can come. Out of “nowhere”.

Heart is that wich the machine does not have, but we, human individuals do. Industries can be amazing, corporations can be fantastic, but over those wonders we need greater ones. Those are human individuals. Whole individuals, from all over the place, to keep inventing better

ways. It is not a matter of reinventing the wheel or unnecesary discarding already well done things. It is a matter of going further and questioning everything. I feel it is time to create a better product, new, better, affordable, beautiful, and conscious.

Blend In/Stand Out

It is time we take responsability for what occurs around us.

But before that, we ought to take responsability for ourselves.

Do not blend in out of cowardice nor stand out because of vanity.

Responsability for oneself.

This is why, being a graduated architect, I want to step into industrial design. Mainly because I want to take responsability for myself and my potential to do good. I want to do it because I have a clear vision of what I want to do, and the passion and commitment to achieve it, no matter the scale it will have in the end.

I have ideas for toys, teaching equipment and games. I have ideas for vehicles, houses and communities. I have ideas for clothing, art, products. And also I would like to develop beautiful equipment for the artistic expression for the dissabled.

The momentum to aquire the knowledge to develop all those projects is here. It is my wish and duty to bring them to life.

I have a passion for art, architecture, design, drawing, materials, 3D design, and geometry.

A passion for teaching, language and communication, the enviroment, and sociological perspectives.

Blend in out of consideration and stand out because of valor.

Stand out because of Presence, because of Beauty, because of Strength.

Stand out because of necesary change when things are no the best.

Once you´ve done your work standing out, then you can blend in again.

Being tree, flower, fruit or seed Only stages of the path you heed.

Normality Modern Civilization binds us to certain standards

that in some practical sense are wonderful but in other areas are turning into a nightmare we get so used to

that we think it`s normal. They certainly are normal

because the term is relative.

The normal thing for a woman in central europe in the sixteenth century

was that delivering a baby was a 40 to 50% death probability.

Now our sense of “normality” has changed, hopefully in most places, but nevertheless,

concearning design and technology,

we could ask certain apparenlty childlish questions

about our “normal” world such as: Why airplanes have to be

Why do they need a long runway to take off? Is there a real need for them to be so noisy?

so huge? Why buildings have to be square shaped? Why we must spend hours and hours in traffic jams? Part of the answer is what I like to call mass consciousness:

A kind of inertia of how a mass of people think about (or rather, try not to think about) certain things

without questioning.

For now, lets say again that everything is a matter of relativity. VF.

A lightbulb symbol for an idea.

Once upon a time, there was

a lowerly class condo in a very poor nehiborhood, that had the “uncommon” luxury of a common lounge for gatherings, and they were very proud of it. The people that lived there were so poor that literally every penny for them was like gold. Someone that had planned a party for his son´s birthday wanted to celebrate in the lounge, but he found out there was no lightbulb on the ceiling. The man was mad. He told the housekeeper: Whose responsability is this lightbulb?

The man gathered a certain number of neighbors and they started to shout at each other, not wanting to give a penny for the lightbulb. The birthday hour was approaching and the children were about to come, but the men did not stop arguing. The mother of the child came, and offered everybody a tiny piece of cake.

While the men were distracted eating the cake, the woman stepped into a chair and put a lightbulb from her dining room.

When the men finished the cake, they realized they were in perfectly lit room. The children arrived and they forgot about the incident. From that day on nobody complained about the lightbulb in the lounge, but everyone put their own from their dining rooms. THE END.

Yes, it is a simple story,

but from it we can extract certain facts.

The lightbulb was not that expensive, nevertheless the people at the condo felt it was a matter of honor to DEFINE a responsible to pay for it. They wanted to save their money, but none of them realized they ALREADY HAD a lightbulb in their house that they were not using at the time. What they did not want to give up was not a lightbulb but an IDEA of how to use a lighbulb. I can bet that even yourself the reader may be hearing a voice in the head saying: “But all Lightbulbs must be in place all at the same time so everything works perfectly.” But this people were so poor they had to manage to get through the month, paying the rent, and scarcely eat something. Maybe they had problems in their families, ignorance, you name it. So even having a small common lounge was a luxury for them. But the simple solution to a simple immediate problem was

at hand: they had simply to CHANGE A HABIT, but they couldn´t, they were inoperant. The mother on the other hand, did not argue but simply lit the room with A NEW IDEA. The same occurs with the industry and the enviroment. Our global industry has been funded on a lot of knowledge, but also on a lot of ignorance.

It may sound as a contradiction but it isn´t. I mean not ignorance of knowledge wich we have plenty. I mean ignorance of wisdom.

Wisdom comes from the heart and knowledge comes from the mind.

Wisdom should lead and knowledge should follow.

So returning to our story, we see the difference of perspective in giving an object a certain value. The lightbulb is a symbol.

If I think like I have to buy a new lightbulb, it is a symbol of defeat: Someone made me buy this thing NOT WANTING TO DO IT. But if I have it in my house it doesn´t matter because it is MINE. On the other hand If you think about it in terms of simple use, there is no problem to get my own whenever it is not used AND USE IT TEMPORARELY, in another place. Even the design ofthe lightbulb could changed to meet this new use, and instead of a screw like fixation, it could be just a snap/put.

I believe this is the central paradigm shift that would get rid of traffic jams all around the globe, and one good way to step into it is to integrate architecture and transportation in a more fluent way. Precisely a NEW IDEA, in which a considerable amount of people would have to change a habit.

The other problem I see that hinders us, is lack of creativity, through the fear of initial financial failure. Habits are cemented into our brains through advertising, which works with the subconscous mind to manipulate the most prmitive part of our brains. We are subtely bullied by social pressure forces, into elite dominated trends. So mainly the obsesive cathegorizing and naming of things, is what limits the imagination and the flourishing of new ideas.

Lets say we live in the early eighties. And we say well... I want to study about electronics, computer technology and graphics, design, caligraphy, music and music distribution, and lets say... telephone technology.

A “normal” person in the early eighties would say: “Hey pal, I think you are hallucinating. What do any of these industries have to do with each other? They all are perfectly developing in the hands of great companies with the best experts in their fields working on them. They don’t have anything in common! Certainly you are not going to find a job.” Yes, he didn’t find any, because he WAS THE JOB. The thing was that the “device” market was not created yet. You only had a man with hunches and the ability to merge disciplines and talents of people to produce wonderful new products. Let me adventure myself to point out that those hunches were comming through the heart and LATER implemented by the mind.

Now I´d like to take this to another place in history when the Wright brothers inteded to make a flying machine. ¿Was it not common to hear people say those days: “If God wanted us humans to fly he would have given us wings”?

A pretty biblical statment!

The Wright brothers cut through a solid mass delusion, that for some, was extended not only to the phisical/practical but limited ourselves also on a spiritual level. For some in those days we did not even have the god given right to fly in the first place! So the most incredible achievement of the Wright brothers (And all the enthusiast that were giving their minds and hearts to the task of powered flight) was to transcend a cemented cultural belief. In that sense we could say they were real experimental scientists, cultural leaders, and practical visionaries. VF

I´ll just give an example from someone that I am sure is recognized as one the most evident visionaries in design and technology: Steve Jobs.

All these phenomena are the result of lack of creativity. And I am not only talking about creativitiy in the arts, or the sciences, or industrial design. This a matter of creativity in all aspects and walks of life, especially on a political level.

here it comes an- Mind Collaboration and the els of quality and security wich other key to my work in Knowledge-Wisdom Balance, I are perfectly commendable. The design, be it architectural, or would like to add that the linear, problem arises when those laws

vehicles, or other kinds of products, and it is the limitations of the human mind.

Our minds, especially in the western part of the world (that ironically includes japan, corea, malasia, and now china among others) are set in “comparison mode”.

This competitive-analitical mode only can set its images in hierarchy, in a linear way, that is limited in only one dimension, or at least one dimension at a time.

Then this comparison mode generates a state of mind in which people are put in line and judged “digitally”. 0-1, Yes or No, Good or Bad, Better or Worse, Black or White.

This is what I call “binary thinking”. This kind of thinking can sometimes be great for business but it is terrible for enjoying life and thinking in a creative way. It also appears that the very structure of language itself is set on this mentality, so when it comes the time in life when we are comfronted to great experiences of beauty or love, we simply are left speachless.

Then the most adventurous and sensitive start to feel need to do poetry, and painting, to express those things in which words are simply not suited. Also in front of new things we can be forced to be creative enough to invent a new word such as “internet”.

But back to stadards, if someone creates a wonderful product that meets a need or a demand based on transcendance, or a widening of thinking, the not so creative people around will tend simply to copy it and improve it in their own one dimensional-comparative way.

In this regard, they would create something that could be maybe a little more affordable and a little enhanced, without the risk taking, the hard work and the geniality of creating someting based on hunches, risks, investigation and trial and error out of nowere.

The classical case of Apple and Samsung.

So wich one is better? The linear mind will not rest until it finds the answer and entrenches it into a political possition. For the rest only our heart can have a more profound answer than a simple, aritmetical evaluation.

Lack of qualitative creativity also hinders the industry in the sense that when a lot of people want to do the same thing at the same time, disputes arise and the law has to intervene. So limitation in the form of new laws and regulations start to build boundaries around innovation. Don’t get me wrong. Laws and regulations are

So legislation and a slumbered culture can be a big and sad limitation to the creative expression of society as whole.

So I forsee a new wave of creative and adventurous legislators and polititians, industrialists, venture capitalists, and investors, bankers and enterpreneurs of all walks of life that can change many social and individual problems into oportunities in the not so far future.

Creativity is not a monopy of the artists or designers, but also a merit of the ones that give opportinity, support, understanding and space to the arts, and new ideas all over the world.

So part of the responsability to widen the standards of life in creative new ways, lies on the hands of the powerful, because those are the ones that have the boldest opportunity to be the forerunners for progress, not only for a fiew, but for all people under the sun. VF.

The Cost of Technology So at first the main source of fear, to implement a new idea, besides being ridiculed, rejected, or left alone, is the fear of economical shipwreck.

That´s why any good enterpreneur needs allies from all walks of life, especially if that enterpreneur is design-oriented. At first there has to be a considerable ammount of capital to start a new technology or develop a new idea. One intelligent move can be offering the new idea as a toy for rich and/or famous people, and then to not so rich people, and with all the money gathered by those activities finnally standardizing the new technology to lower the cost as much as good quality and investigation can allow.

Designing the Industry, Complexing-Simplifying Paradigms.

I feel (should I think it also?) That creating a really innovating new product, is equivalent to create a new industry. The materials are going to gather suppliers, the design is going to need robots and humans to assemble them, the mounting can honour the assembly line logic to optimize processes, the integration of internal parts can minimize production time. Also designing the way in wich the products are selled, used in a certain timespan and discarded in a safe way, can be greatly thanked by the environment.

Consumerism vs. Enjoyerism.

A Matter of Mentality.

I heard someone (deliberately not saying his name) say that thinking to solve a problem, especially in design, was done in two ways: The first one was by annalogy and the other one was by first principles. This two ways of thinking are necessary to go through life but only one leads to true innovation. Thinking by analogy is to see what you neighbor is doing, and slightly and gently modify it, so it is easy to understand and also probable to improve in a linear way. But imrpovement is not the same as innovation. On the other hand, thinking by first principles, leads you to ask meaningful, core questions, about a problem, and really aim for the natural principles that govern the problem to solve. So we can see that the real nature of a problem is phenomena, but a “political� opinion is only an image of the phenomena.

The opinion of a human being is not going to change the principle that the earth attracts the mass of his or her body to the earth.

Natural phenomena has to be dealt with the same way. This difference in approaches is the core of our enviromental problems, but also the key to overcome them in record time.

A Spiritual Law of Business?

So I believe in business, there is a spiritual law. (Another statement that can sound paradoxical) The most capital you risk based on deep hunches about the future, the more profitable your industry turns to be.

In Disneyland.

Ok, so some could say I live in Disneyland. Yes, I answer. And my answer extends a bit. Disneyland, and Disneyworld, as all the Disney industries are one of the most profitable corporations in America and the world. They are an example of success, geniality and impulse. Mr. Disney is going to be hardly substituted, ever. The corporation has diversified, has buyed other companies and continues to produce excellent films and hours of uplifting entertainment to the world.

The Cost Priority vs. the Transcendant Priority.

But in the case of other industries that does not implement as much imagination, there will be allways a question about the subject of purpose.

Do you think Mr. Walt Disney did what he did because he wanted to make money? Or maybe security for his retirement? These are not bad things, but maybe he had other priorities. Some will say: “Off course he did it for money!” Others could say: “He did it because he had a big ego and he wanted to name everything with his name!” or maybe: “He did it because he had a purpose in life.”

I think Mr. Disney was a visionary, an artist and a responsible enterpreneur.

He knew he could have an impact on the American culture. He knew he could achieve great things and he did not think small. He had talent, and also the humility to gather the most talented artists and work with them. And I think something that, to some will sound a little strange: he loved money, he did not wanted it. He did not wanted it because of greed but loved it because of the possibility to expand his service to America and the world. With a responsible administration of money, he created and developed an industry that did not exist before!

Imageneering Is Not Only for Theme Parks.

We go to disneyland for vacation. A time when we rest from “reality”. There, the seed of the bold American spirit is expressed while the original european legacy of the classical stories of the Grimm Brothers, and Hans Cristian Andersen coexist with the peaceful influence of the cultures of the world. It is a place where childhood is king, (or maybe queen), and adults remember their childhood in their children´s smiles.

But what if we needed not a world of illusion to feel that way? What if we had cities less serious, less intimidating? What if authorities were not to punish but only to provide peace? What if buildings were playful and gentle, what if there was a place for everyone on this planet? VF

Spiritual Rights in Foresight All kinds of people´s spiritual needs can be in the future be turned into civil rights.

I think, that people have certain rights, and in the development of those rights America is a forerunner to the world. Nevertheless I think things could be better and I think, that there are certain rights not yet recognized by mainstream culture in general. Not long ago being a free individual was a luxury that african american people lacked, just beause of their race. Now many people take it for granted. Nevertheless things have changed because someone said: “I have a dream”, and gave his life for it. Now there is a more fair society, but other human rights are not yet even discovered. Those rights, as freedom, I believe are of a spiritual nature. Of all this rights that I also dream, I can name some: The right of inpiration. The right of beauty. The right of committing mistakes and correct. The right of oportunity. The right of getting out of ignorance wich in the end is the only way to true freedom. I see America as great place for these rights to develop into higher and higher levels of achievement.

The Wonderful Legacy of America.

So in part this is why America inspires me so much. My very country, Venezuela, was a dream of a very rich men who had a purpose. Simón Bolivar among many others admired the founding fathers of America, and wanted to reproduce the innovative experiment of a free nation in his land, for his people to be free of the spanish rule, and in his eagerness for freedom he fought and liberated four countries. This is the extent of what America has inspired other nations.

Now I come to (north)America and it is like I am at the very source of this liberating dream. A place where there is a general respect for the law, honour, and hard work. (And also contrasts of the human experience and things to improve as any other part of the world, including the not sogood stuff.)

America is also to me, somehow a drama, in which a very wealthy child of a high lineage, that has become to some extent, lazy and spoiled, struggles with a worried and troubled father. Here the hard- to-change contaminating industries and the willfully ignorant consumers, cohexist with the responsible forerunners that give their lives and effort for a new sustainable paradigm for the future.

America has much more stars than the ones appearing in her flag .

The greek empire and the roman empire, are present in America. The first tribal settlers are also present. The English and the Scottish, and the Irish are also present. South America, Africa, and Europe are present too. Far east is also present. The polinesian culture is also present, and the spanish empire is also present. Middle east is here also, and the Mediterranean. America also has some stars of the future, maybe from Mars. How can all these peoples from the world coexist and create this rich mixture?

Many think America is rich because of money, or her military power.

But I think otherwise. America is rich because of people, because spiritually, american is somehow the one that stands for thuth and freedom, for enjoyment, innovation and lightness, even if he or she comes from any part around the globe. VF

References in Design Work.

The word critizism comes with a certain bitterness. A simple observation and a constructive comment can save a project from failure or help improve it. In that case would we call it critizism or contribution? The source of our comment is in our heart, and the consequences can be a great experience or an exhausting one. “By the fruits you will know them.”

The need for balance and self reliance.

So I think that the analisis and the references are necesary and useful. They have to be inteligently processed and baked in the “oven” of an intuitive mind. They have to be checked from time to time once they are inside, and then, you take them out. A tasty cake of integrated new ideas comes fresh out of the oven! So baking takes its art and experience. The cake, to be really good, must not be overdone, nor having more or less ingredients than needed.

In “reference” to this, I have to say that it seems to me there is an oportunity for everyone to express themselves culturally, outwardly through architecture, art and industrial design in general. The west coast and its somewhat more relaxed fashion and spanish influence, passing through the “kitch” extravaganza of Las Vegas, to the most conservative expressions in the south and east coast. That’s the beauty of it: There is a space for all. Hopefully there will be space here for the following works too, and maybe in some other parts of the world !

So before displaying this portfolio of works, ideas, likes and hunches, I ‘ll show some references in which I inspired myself. Maybe they can be ingedients of another baker’s “cake” as well. Also I’ll place what I call “self references”, which are certain conceptual resources in which I find interest and help. VF

Reuben Margolin’s Works,

inspire me because they have deep philosophical implications. They are based on natural law and mathematics and geometry at its best. Just observing a moving piece is delightful. I admire him so much because he really took risks in his life to achieve this kind of maturity of proposal, and also he had the patience, and the humility to commit mistakes and to do his work with his own hands, even calculating complex data just with paper and pencil, no computers involved. Now he has partners, highly sophisticated, that help him achieve outstanding and great format moving structures. He inspires me because he is an example of achieving something not done before.

An example of dedication and hard work, persistency and faith in oneself. Also he takes his own genious very lightheartedly, and shares his insights with simplicity and humbleness. He is joyous about his work, so for me he is a very good example to follow. Offitially an artist, he takes a serious walk through areas of design, mechanical engineering, science and philosophy.

Markus Kayser Sculptor/Artist

Markus Kayser’s latest works are so inspiring to me.

He uses a technique of rough 3D printing using solar energy in the middle of the desert, to create the most incredible pieces. The sand is melted into rough glass/ carbon substance and layer by layer, it solidifies into a very rigid and hard material. The solar light is condensed through four fresnelled transparent acrillic pannels into a relatively small point on the surface of a moving sand container which movements are controlled by computer.

The layers are done in aprecise manner tracing a line, much like normal 3D printers. (An obsession that I have) This possibility to “prototype� art in such a pure way, seems to me very exciting. The possibilities are endless and later I will show some ideas I have derivated from this initial spark.

This gives us a sense of security that is somehow illusory. Nevertheless the human experience is deeper than that, and when life itself confronts us with unique phenomena, with risks and unknown things, our mind feels fragile and powerless, because “something” is not “procesable”. This is part of human nature, but not the only one possible. We not only have minds but also hearts to rely on. We can grasp possiblities, sense certain mysteries, and navigate wisely through uncertainty. We also are capable of learning, to modify our own slots, and to widen our perception of life, events, and people as we grow. So I finish this article reminding ourselves that if we don’t grow every day, we start to die slowly, and to grow steadily or variedly we need to stretch, and be flexible! :) VF

in Design

To me, in life we can have only two basic, core motivations: one is fear and the other is love. So I think designing is a joyful process, when it is lead

by Love. All design done with fear, be it of rejection, of harm, or any other fear, will be a limiting design, that in the end will cut, in some way or another, the expression of life. On the other hand every design that is inspired in love, affection, protection, courtesy, consideration and service, is a design correctly founded, and in that sense it is a fruitful one.

Sometimes the act of correcting a design by fearful situations, can be very frustrating. Comfronting new ideas (or simply any idea) to fearful people, can be annoying and painful. The main motivation of predominantly fearful people is for security. And in that sense I want to add that there is a difference between security and protection.

Protection is loving, but security is fearful. Protection is compassionate but security is waiting to attack back. So in that sense fearfulness does no lead to any beatiful, meaningful or transcendant result. On the other hand, love is constructive, passionate and fruitful in the end. Loving takes risk. Risk of rejection, risk of ridicule, risk of being wrong, risk of losing what you percieve as yours.

But the reward is worthwile any pain. As everything in life, any fullfilling design is based in love.

Designing in love is intrinsically joyful. That’s why I say joy is the main energy source of any meaningful design. VF

Tolerance vs.

Acceptance

Upbringing, establishes the base platform in which we tend to percieve the world. And based on that upbringing we learned to name things around us. Those names, later are complemented with adjectives, and subtely we attach those adjectives to the names in a somwhat unconscious manner. The attachment between names and adjectives is stronger in cultures that are more isolated, in one way or another, but is more flexible in cultures that are more open to new things. Openness to new things implies the flexibility to interchange or even discard the previous attachment that we had between the names and the adjectives. Everyone has his or her limitations concearning flexibility and openness, but in the end wha counts is the wholeheartedly intention of improvement in the right direction. So in this sense i want to point out that personally I sense a big difference between tolerance and acceptance.

Tolerance is a situation when I o not accept something I do not like or understand, but I force myself to stand it, because of a certain artificial or imposed rule that to me seems important. Acceptance on the other hand does not come from a self imposed mind, but from the heart, and it leads to peace, and long lasting harmony. Acceptance calls to inform ourselves, to face ourselves with that wchich we could hate, fear, or simply find anoying. In that facing, a certain alchemy can occur, and hopefully a new door opens to happiness and peace.VF

Peugeot ALLCAPE HD An exciting adventure in design.

While working at my first serious

job at an architectural office in Caracas, I was told about the 2007 Peugeot Design Concourse. I had some designs of my own including a new version for a 330 series for BMW, completely fictional, purely for the pleasure of designing and rendering. At first, I began the design as a fictional entertaining, but as I became enthusiastic, ideas began to flow smoothly.

Step by step the design took shape, and finally I decided that this was for sure. I had to enter. I recieved the backup of many wonderful people, including the firends at Agell TA, my family, friends from school who did a wonderful job at advertising the concept, and above all, support of all kinds from my then girlfriend, now my wife, Ana Gabriela.

The Peugeot ALLSCAPE HD came from a dream that I had, (and I still have it) that a sportive car should be also very

ecological. The carbon footprint of a green design, should be minimal, especially for a suburban vehicle. This concept is very unusual. It is inspired on motorcycles, mountain bikes, motocross motorcycles, yatchs, rally cars, high tech furniture design and believe it or not, sporty baby strollers.

The need for personality and sportiveness, united with a certain tough character, also made me think about taking other references like the G/Shock watches from Casio and gear and equipment from CAT and Victorinox. The need for toughness was in part because of an intetion to make a statement in which green products are not for “pussies� and that taking a stand for the enviroment, does not necessarily involves being a tree hugger. (Nevertheless I highly recomend hugging trees :) The posiblity of a vehicle with interchagable tires, and variable suspension, also seduced me.

I thought that the maximum efficiency could be achieved through light and strong materials, and somehow, like Leonardo Da Vinci, I could inspire myself in nature to achieve a goal. What better for an ecological vehicle? So what if this car had bones like an animal? If I wanted it to be like an animal, potent, free, indomable and fast, I should use bones to give it strength. Then, if it had bones, he needed also muscle, so I thought about the power train. I thought about a Hibrid System, (HD) in which the main source of power was not centralized but evenly distributed between five sources:a frontal positioned V4 natural gas engine and four 25kw electrical motorbrakes. So the main effect should be achieved by the Power weight ratio, bacause the main load in this cars were the passengers. The rest was an aluminum alloy core, and a carbon fiber bone body. So once having the muscle, I started tho think about the legs, o then

my passion for BMW Motorcicles came to me. I would do the frontal suspension like the one of a formula one car, in incremented-section carbonfiber, but the rear transmition, would constitute also the suspension system. So I crafted two diagonal paralever systems for each rear wheel, giving the car very interesting properties in its internal architecture.

So, my animal already had Bones, muscle and legs, but he needed also skin to gain elegance , better aerodynamics,and a certain presence, so I though about high density plexiglass to cover it. This would give me the opportunity to provide

the driver and passenger with complete views of the outdoor envronment. These skin would be done in plaques or pieces, like if it was a rhinoceros or a dinosaur.

The plaques, could be removable, interchangable, and recyclable. The possibility to change the look and aerodynamics of the car through them was in my mind, but timing and effort economy leaded me to leave that possibility to a later time. So the next tasks were developing an interior, and designing a set of wheels good enough for this athlete.

So I saw many designs from NIKE, and many car interiors, like the one of the Bugatti Veiron. All seemed excellent to me but I had an idea very particular. In those days, cars did not commonly have an infotainment unit. They also did not have usb ports or digital dashboards. so I put all those features. There was not a shift changer but levers at the drivewheel. Allso the need to present the engine and motorbrakes went on so I spent

hours and hours making tests on the appearance of the Peugeot Insignia over the “hood� while showing the V4 sign. A very tough decision came when I did the two-brace branched rims. nevertheless did it and I think part of the succes of the design is on its innovative and strange appearance. So, once I had in my mind all these design concepts and decisions I started to draw technical drawings. i did a fiew measures on Autocad, and VectorWorks over sketch references.

The design was finally comming to life.

From that I started to position the plans in 3D space on Cinema 4D, and using the wonderful Hypernurbs feature, step by step the modeling came to reality.

The time pressure was very hard, and I had to use every single day including weekends mostly at night hours, while still working at the office regularily. To meet al those goals I had to use rigurous use of time through project mangment techniques I learned at the University.

o the model had to be developed based on the desired views and adjusted on the go. Each single part was sheduled to be finished in a certain time. For the whole project I had three months, and from those three months I just had three four-hour sessions a day for weekends and one on weekdays. I worked Monday to Friday from eight o’clock to twelve o’clock am and on weekends I worked on morning from 8 in the morning to noon, on the afternoon from two to six, and at night from eight to midnight. The three months were divided in percentages. The subdivision was, a golden formula I use for every conceptuel work I do. It is the result of multiplying the whole time available by 0.618 (Inverse Golden Ratio) and the bigger resultant part again by the same number, the results are irrational numbers but making n average they result 40:40:20.

So it is 40% Purely conceptual work, 40% developement, modeling and rendering, and 20% Postproduction and presentation.

So it was hard work. I dedicated

myself so much because the oportunity was incredible. The first prize was a trip to Frankfurt Automotive Saloon, and the Peugeot prototyping team was going to reproduce a full scale model of the winning entry to present it as part of the showroom. I had an eagerness to win and maybe find some opportunity in Europe be it to study or work at some internship. Unforunately my eagerness developed into a deviation of Peugeot “cahier d’exercises”. Ultimately, I did not take into account many of the requirements of the contest, and they told me, even developed many aspects that were not required. The thing is that I took this project as being alive, and I could not cut its natural development. Peugeot’s president talked about the entries in the podium and said that the ALLSCAPE HD had extraordinary qualities and they wanted to recognize that effort. nevertheless they could not make it win because it lacked simplicity, which was a key requirement for winning. Unfortunately, my prototype being inspired by motorcycles, showed openly its mechannical parts, and honored the internal engineering logic of the poer train and the structure. So I felt really sad about not winning, but then really happy at the reality of how far this work went. Nevertheless the Allscape attracted numerous attention in internet, it was on the main sites about car design, and even Maxon Computer, the maker of Cinema 4D, -software that I used for modeling and rendering-, was interested in the images. So the ALLSCAPE HD ended being the front cover for the MAXON Cinema 4D official site in the engineering and indutrial design section, and they asked me for the original 3D scene to be the standard CINEBENCH hardware test program that year.It is to this day an official member of the automotive and the engineering galleries on the site. Also, C4DES the magazine we see left, did a very nice interview on the -making ofamong others. They asked me if they could collaborate with me making new renders to make the article more attractive. I said yes. in collaboration with C. Agell, wonderful new renders were done. Also Tavy Pasieka from 3D attack gave me an interview in the site and the on-line publication. Later the work was awarded with a CG choice award from de CG Society. I am so thankful to all the people that helped me in this effort, that hopefully, will open more doors to the future. VF

Also it was a first serious attempt to model a full conceptual preproject in 3D which at the time was not required at all. I did it because of the joy of visualizing my first architectural work. Design III/Duplex-Semi

Leveled Apartments

This project was an introduction to urban variables, areacost restrictions and the apartment-housing subject. It was a lot of fun for me because I explored semileveled floors, spatial relationships and interesting structural solutions.

Also I played with a certain facade composition. Using computers was “not allowed�, but I managed to make a simple model , print a basic render and then handraw over them. Here we have the references I used.

Design V/Office

Tower & Convention Center

This project was an introduction to high rise urban variables, intensive area use and the office/services/commerce subject. It was challenging for me because I comfronted many limitations, under a very strict and stern proffessor. he tought us the rigurous practice and responsability over capital and the need for effectiveness, clarity of purpose, and optimal revenue. I inverted my priorities then from plasticity to a very pragmatic design philosophy. To my suprise, the result was the most elegant tower.

Design V/Luxury

Apartment Building

This project was an introduction to the apartment subject at a much higher level. Here I explored also with level relationships in amore mature way. In this project I did not modeled anything 3D in the computer, but only rigurous analisys in 2D. Then I turned obsessed with making a very appealing model, very precise to express every detail. Unfortunately i lost th track of time and my energy resorces so when I finished the model I was completely exhausted.

I did not have time to finish appropriate plans so I had to draw very rough ones by hand.

Design VI/Historical

Plaza Renovation

This urban intervention was an introduction to the urban renovation-landscaping subject. At the time we did this, Plaza la Pastora was a place in Caracas that had suffered deterioration and a certain identity loss. The idea was to take this plaza in front of a relatively old church and revitalize in a modern but respectful way, honouring certain local memorials and at the same time improving a very tortured existing vehicle circulation. Here we see the resulting model.

Design VII/Urban

Mall

This urban mall was a deepening of what we alredy knew about commercial buildings. This time we had a spetialized commercial architect, Prof. Astorga, as a guest professor, who knew every inch of the process, from talking with clients to detailing in site. It was really a pleasure being tought by him. We developed skills in area managing, proximity, pedestrian paths, security and commetial standards, technical and logistical issues of all kinds, vehicular impact, and also structural concearns. I felt very satisfied and thankful with the results.

Design VIII/Massive

Urban Developement

This complex was an introduction to the concept of massive urban intervention, office/commercial/convention complexes, and the concept of urban front composition, masive pedestrian flow and urban interconnection. We had to fit these huge project imbricated with the existing subway lines, and respond directly to significative places like Plaza Venezuela. The results for each one of us were dramatically different. We were given much freedom to propose, since it was a site with special urban variables.

The main components of this project was: 1) A huge mall that interconnects directly underground with a massive (The Biggest in Caracas) subway station. 2) An institutional building to hold certain goverment buildings. 3) Big convention center. 4) Three office towers. 5) Place for high density parking. So the main idea was to create a big walktrough between the exit of the station under and over ground, and take all these pedestrians to the other side of the lot. To do that a high density attraction center was placed at the other end, and in the middle a green, progressively sloped terrace, that went through very clear commercial clusters.

To the left of this possible path, three L shaped office towers, provide rithm while holding over them, as pillars of a bridge, a gigantic and panoramic convention center.

Design IX/Museum

of Sacred Art Addition.

This exercise was an introduction to the concept of institutional and historic responsability. Also it was about expositive spaces and its rigurous requirments. We had to provide an urban front for the most historic plaza in Caracas, and probably the country, namely, Plaza Bolivar, previously Plaza Mayor. This place is the very foundational point for the whole city, by its very founder the spanish conqueror, Diego de Lozada, in 1567. So the commision was to develop an addition to the existing Museum of Sacred Art, providing a very serious and respectful space to hold the countrie’s both antique and contemporary sacred art collections. The building had to implement a touristic attraction vocation, and also should serve as a place for pilgrimage to christians, especially catholics from all over Venezuela and abroad.

Here I show the model and the renders of the interior spaces. The plans (not showing them here) were realtively simple, but arduous to achieve at that time. The building had a contrasting appearance, sticking to a modern, very contained character. The main articulator was a central ramp that connected the main levels. Every gallery had its own distinctive form, proportion and sequence, in a way that would not lead to boredom, but also in a very serious way, to preserve sobriety. Facing the busy street there was a museum shop, while the corner was treated as a negative volume for pedestrians to pass through.

Design X/Graduate

Students Residence USB Sartnejas.

This exercise was a rigurous exercise about costs and institutional presence. Also we were facing many topography challenges that had to be creatively dealt with. The program was to provide accomodations to graduate students, at a reasonable cost, but appealing enough. We were required to show some sensitivity regarding the looks and certain “luxury� features to provide graduate students, both single and married. So we had to separate both kinds, and also save space for a certain amount of especial suites for regular and international professors. Areas were tightly controlled, but there was freedom on other aspects. The project is organized in two service modules with varied uses and three sloped residential blocks. Each two appartments constituted a cube, wich was then arranged in an escalator, like pattern to resolve the difference between the optimal view and the inclination of the terrain. This was my first intensive 3D model ever, and given the power of available technology then, it was a great, great achievement.

Every render was patienly waited and every pixel, every vector was carfully and economically managed.

Also the use of time was a very good experience. I had it on time, all plans, models, and renders at a reasonable quality, meeting all requirements. It was a great phisical effort to finish it, but at the same time, it was a pleasurable experience.

The project is located in the same site were still today lies the current building for the architecture career of USB Sartenejas.

The actual building is somewhat precarious although noble in terms of its long years of service, nevertheless it is a recycled industry barn, very old and in need of renovation. I thought that I could design a whole new idea for a complex, rich in terms of variety and services, not only for architecture but for alternative activities for the other careers. I thought also about how inspirational a place to study design should be. It responded to a need for a more artistic approach, in contrast with the stern character of the rest of the buildings in the campus. USB is a very technical institution, more like a technological Intitute.

The new building would provide a contrasting and balancing experience for holding architecture as a more humanistic discipline. Nevertheless, I desired that the complex had also a very balanced expression, a gentle appearance, but at the same time character and presence.

As we see in the images, the ground level is reserved for parking. gathering pedestrian traffic mostly at its “spine” were we find stairs and long ramps at the terminals. The first level consist of a series of galleries for displaying design or artistic work, open to the public that can be circulating thriugh the “spine” half a level above,. On the other side of the spine there are more aompartimetalized spaces like auditoriums, correction rooms, modeling workshops and classrooms. On one end we find bigger classrooms and at the other a covered plaza that gathers a cafeteria, toilets, a big exposition room and administrative offices. This images were accompanied by very detailed plans and elevations. Unfortunately digital copies were lost, the only reference left are very large printed versions.

Classrooms So the concept was to “design” on one side of the wall, to “circulate” in the middle, and to “show and discuss” on the other side. Below more serius and methodical prectices as well as complemmentary courses for other carrers could take place.

Another great feature was the covered plaza, which gathered the main authorities with students in a friendly way. Also the complex could be used for movie projections, expositions and events not necesarily in direct relation to architecure but as a service provided by the Department. The Coordinator office, equivalent to a principal or a president of the Architecture Career, had a great panoramic view over the main terrace

It consists in a multi/leveled, panoramic, central circulation device, from wich the material displayed at the galleries below is evident. The permeable enclosure is made of imbricated wooden scales, that provide shade and shelter, while permitting air circulation. This is ver important because in Venezuela the weather is tropical and relatively confortable throughout the year, tending to high tempreatures. Ventilation keeps the air cool inside and the little holes, on sunny days, proyect light dots all over the spine’s floor.

The first four works displayed here were done when I was still a student. Ne eling and rendering was not widespread those days in Venezuela and had gr and on place. Some works done during this period are not shown because o 2002/PDVSA Situational Room Interior Design A preproject done in team with my friend Arch. Carlos Rengifo. We were students at the time, but we were fortunate enough to design for one of the leading oil companies in Venezuela. We had to propose furniture and acoustic finishes, milti-media backup and a certain luxury styling.

2003/ 3D Modeling & Renders/ Sidewalks and Urban Firnishing/Av. Fco. de Miranda Caracas/AlcaldĂ­a de Chacao, Caracas.

This was my first job as a graduate student. In team we modeled new wide and sectorized sidewalks for the Fco. de miranda Avenue in Caracas, as well as urban furniture, signs, kiosks, lightposts and human scales. It was also my first contact with Cinema 4D sofware.

2003/High-Res Photographic Composite/ Fco.

This was a second comission, in team with a senior architect and three more graduate students, we did the complete photographic survey in high resolution of the Fco. de Miranda Av. urban front, for the mayoralty cathastral services. For this job I was systematically trained in photoshop software , and gained a deeper comprehention and capability.

2004 Vehicular-Pedestrain Bridge in Valencia-Venezuela /for Grupo AM/Arch. Roberto Ameneiro.

Still in 2004 Venezuela did not have widespread access to 3D technology, so I was a rare case of someone that worked entirely in 3D. So Arch. Roberto Ameneiro called for me, to develop a model of a circular-section bridge with variable helix development and tilted section. All these dificulties I had to get perfectly fit because the model was not only for renders but to actually construct the bridge.

From the model, wich had a high level of precision, design decisions, sections & elevations were taken.

evertheless I was given sometimes great responsabilities, because 3D modreat demand by some architecural firms. So I had the grace to be on time of lack of images, although they are mentioned in the resume.

2003/House Back-Terrace Renovation

This was my first job as independent. I was commitioned by a friend’s family to renovate the Back-Terrace next to a pool they had. Unfortunately, they did not know the costs of their wish-list, and I did not have the experience to manage the situation. They aproved the proposal, but later were offended by the construction costs which I did not asked for as budget previously. So the project was never constructed, and my relationship with the family took time to heal. This was a first frustrating experience that later would lead me to study NLP communication models.

2004/IBM of Venezuela “On Demand Day” Ser-

vice Stand/Grand Meliá Caracas Tech-Expo

This job was the fist after my graduation. An already graduated friend called me to help him because they were flooded with work in their newly established architecural office. So I joined the team and proposed in flash time, (Almost just a day) a concept for a stand to promote a new service IBM branding was offering called “On demand Day”.

Also we were commitioned to construct it and transport it to the expo on time, so this was a very exciting, short, and also exhausting job. Despite the rush we had it on time!

Late 2004-2005/Luxury Housing Devolpment at Alto Hatillo Caracas.

The same architectural office that hired me as a student to work on the Fco. de Miranda photographical survey called me again, a little later, some moths after my graduation to work on this then new exciting project they had. It was a luxury housing development in private site which holded a relatively old house that had to be preserved. The project implied a huge landwork interventionwith great contention rock walls, water treatment, reforestation and lansdcaping.

On this job I had to do the landwork survey analitically, to feed a GPS based site implementation, an innovative practice then. So I learned to work with great precision in AutoCAD, coordinating with all engineering disciplines. Also I aquired a great sense of scale, since I could relate the dimensional perception in site with the technical drawings at office. I supervised (witnessed would be more appropriate) all site works, machinery and human realtions at site.

Also my knowledge in Cinema4D Software and Potoshop deepened, counting with unconditional support by my coworkers. A huge learning experience. I’ll be thank ful forever with my friends Carlos Agell Sr. and Jr. for their willingness to teach, help and share every experience they had at their architectural practice in Caracas.

Ferrero Tamayo Associated Architects 2003/3D Model and Renderings/Industrial Dining Facility/INTEVEP Research Center.

While I was working at Agell TA, my father, Arch. Gustavo Ferrero Gomez called me to make some renders and presentation material for an exposition he had.

I was reluctant to work at or for my father’s office at first.

My vision of architecure and design is completely different that his. Nevertheless this first job together turned to be a very pleasant one, and he was very satisfied with the looks of his design. It was the first time in my life in which I saw my own father as a “client”.

2007/ Instituto Agrónomo Jesus Obrero

This was a beautiful project I did in association with my father. I could write an entire article about this project.In this opportunity, I participated actively in the Masterplan and the development of each one of the buildings. Teamwork flowed smoothly. Also the client was very special, the Jesuit Comunity of Venezuela, they were creatiing an agronomical institute for the devlopment of a poor area. The professional fees for this project were partly donated by us. The final designs resulted incredibly affordable and functional.

The client was very happy. I hope for this institution the biggest success in their social service for people in need.

Late 2007-2008/Montego Bay Stadium Jamaica.

A project for a sports complex that included a Grand Stand and diverse complementary services. I was commisioned to design and develop those complementary services such as entry features, tiket booths and on-the-way shops, all three shown right. Electricity, piping, security and data had to be coordinated and checked also. The service features repeated themselves throughout the complex.

I did also a set of basic 3D models and renders.

TST Projects & Constructions Late 2007-2011 Fluvial Port Facilities/ INEA (Insitute for aquatic Spaces in Venezuela) This project consisted on three small fluvial port facility complexes, mainly to establish military and human presence in endangered zones of the Amazon. I started participating as a collaborator, but in time, I ended being leading architect. At the time the communist political climate in the country was boiling and the project was subject to many power struggles inside and outside INEA. Due to this political pressures, the project was progressively turning economically inviable until my superiors decided to abandon it at great cost. Nevertheless this project was finished under a high level of excellence and great professional good will.

2010-2012 GellatterĂ­a4D Agencies

These were a series of small projects and executions for relatively small Gellatteria4D icecream factory agencies. I participated directly as head designer in two of them, once that I had the experience to manage all the standards. the responsabilities included models, renders, technical coordination, some budget work, material purchase and permits, supervising construction, and hold responsability to the owner. The agencies were finished on time, but the experience was exhausting since the newly constructed mall pressured at maximum to be able to inaugurate. A great larning experience on timing, logistics, human relationships and stress managment.

Working on this project deepened my knowledge about ports and its subtle technical considerations.

Even when I did not participated in the design process, much explanatory imput was given to me to be able to interpret the complex, not so friendly engineering plans.

All equipment and vehicles depicted here, were modeled “by hand� from the ground up, including the cranes, containers, trucks and ships. Especially the cranes were modelled at a high detail level. The original plan was to show them more close up, but time was used to the limit and no more images could be added.

This project was an international design competition to build a new cargo-port in Bilwi Town, Nicaragua.

The presentation project was done in record time, meeting multiple conflicting requirements.

To do it, tons of planimetric data had to be analized and discerned.

Also they asked for a complete infographic explanation of the construction process. Due to the solidiy of the proposal and the clarity of the presentation, the company won the multi-millionaire contract.

Complementary Activities

In 2011, when I showed

up at work the first working day in January, my boss told me that our main employer: Banco Federal was intervened to be dissolved by a government agency.

Apparently the bank was in perfect shape, but this maneuver

was said to be done as a kind of political revenge. It had to do with a psudocommunist agenda to get the banking sector in Venezuela down to their knees. This bank was the main jobprovider to the office I worked for. My main everyday job was to supervise and collaborate in the design of a continually growing net of agencies throughout the country. The company had some unpaid projects from the government, who did not pay them. Political climate was boiling and uncertainty devoured us. Also my father at his office did not have any projects at all. All capitals were stagnant, waiting for the situation to be calmed again.

So for the first time in my life I was left without a job. I was reciently married to my wife Ana Gabriela, funded on the great hope and solidity I had on the job at TST, that seemed to provide some security. Nevertheless, being jobless, I felt the pressure to do something immediately. I asked myself: “What else do I know that I can do something immediately? Well, I know English and Comic Art!”. Even the idea was somewhat dangerous for my “architect ego” but I decided that I was going to set aside prejudices and regidity of mind. I would become an “improvised” English & Art teacher. I bought some wood pieces and constructed myself a table. Then I went to buy teaching materials and books. I studied teaching techniques and evolutive pedagogy. Suddenly our porch had a clock, a whiteboard, and lots of color pencils and paper. I did some publicity

through local internet media and printed flyers. I was expecting that some adults and teenagers were comming but in less than two days at least 13 eager families brought their kids wanting English & Art Classes. In a month more, more kids came and I was doing more money than my paycheck back at troubled TST! And another thing happened: I was HAPPIER! Those kids brought to me the joy and teachings about life. A tenderness and sense of gratitude that I had lost over the years.

I lived solely through this activity for almost nine months, until some architectural jobs and NLP contultanships started to come again. But I could not leave the kids alone just like that! At first I had to reduce progressively the hours with the little ones, and distribute time for incomming, freelance architectural jobs. Then as economy scarcely recuperated, some bigger commitions were comming that required attention. So for a time there was a ping-pong dynamic between the two activities. Finally, even if I had a “full time� job again as an architect, I could not leave my service as English and Art Teacher, so me and my wife organized summer camps, single workshops, weekend activities etc...

The kids loved us and we loved them.

From these years tons of creative material for children were done that are not shown here, including music, children stories and illustrations, activity books and games, ideas for toys and even the dream of creating new services for families with children. All this served as an inspiration for a whole new sense of purpose and service in my life. So now I even thank for any adversity I could have encountered, because it is not what happens to us, but what we decide and who we choose to be in front of it what makes the difference. VF.

Remembrance of the Future/ Catalog of I “Be like the Rain”

Once unpon a time, in a far away land, lived an old man that quarrished and complained about every little thing. He was very stingy and he sticked to his carefully controlled possesions. He lived in a small town near a dessert and he owned the only water well available. Instead of giving the water freely, or at least affordabily, he exploited the townspeople selling the water at high prices. He controlled the entire town and was fearful that someday rain could come, since his fortune was based on the water. He was always saying: There is not enough water to go around! Beware beware!

Buy your water now! A little child that was hearing, said to him with a big smile: “Today, old man, is going to rain abundantly.” The old man answered: how you dare, insolent kid to talk to me? The child answered: “Who more insolent that the one that thinks everything should belong to one man? I tell you, rain is your teacher.

Be like the rain. Then the little child disappeared. It was an angel. The man trembled while the sky turned grey, bursting with thunder and lightning. It rained heavily the first time, so the earth softened. Then, it rained almost every day for eleven months. The soil turned to be fertile, and some men started to sow. People from other countries came to that town to teach how to sow, water and reap. In one more year the town was prosperous and bursting with all kind of people that wanted to live nearby. The old man could not sell his water anymore, but some country men came to him saying: “Old rich man do you want to change your business? They were holding fresh carrots in their hands. The old man heared a voice in his head saiying: “Better dead than abandoning MY well” but then he heard the voice of a child in his head saying: “Be like the rain”.

The old man struggled to repond to any of the voices. The men told him: “Are you allright sir?” “Yes.” He answered smiling. Let’s go and have a talk!”. VF. 50

Ideas & Hunches Remembrance of the Future

Plato believed that everything manifested in the material world had an idea or “archetype” as its original source in a world of pure ideas, or pure potenciality. I believe that this “archetypes”, somehow transcend time and space, so litterally one can have a “remembrance of the future”. The ideas that I am going to present here, constitute my remembrances of a longed future, that “is already manifest” in the the future world, if we do our job right. I know this ideas can come through me, and I can “be like the rain” and have a talk with you about them, because I cannot do nor enjoy them alone. Ya’ know?

These Ideas I have in my desk, with the the dream not only for development at ed, economically viable and operative in every level. I dream of their economi to enjoy. I hope my sharing with you will lead somehow, in time, to progressiv 1) The DinerPod

This is a concept in which I base the next couple of works. It is basically a curvy, taperered, trunked cilinder. This particle hold space for six couples or a family up to six (plus maybe a small child). The Pod can be designed to hold more or less people depending on requirements. The idea is to provide a micro space, very cozy, in which people can feel integrated. Also the pod has windows 360 degrees around and three accesses. It is a somewhat decorative element, vehicle-like, but it proves itself fully functional applied to diferent uses be them static or dynamic.

2) The Uncovered DinerPod

This is is the same Diner Pod concept, but “convertible” for outdoor or indoor areas like parks, restaurans, malls, convention centers, airports, train stations, etc... The plan arrangement philosophy is the same, and can be adapted to any desired variation.

The pod can be static, rotating or it can be a drone with computer controlled wheels and motors. Acertain number of Diner Pod Drones can be arranged to an area and they gently and very slowly can play a dance, performing movements and holding different arrangements.

3) The DinerPod Disk

This is a concept for a compaund Diner Pod unit. The Pods can be arranged in a disk fitted into the floor or landscape in three to seven pods per disk. Can be used also for outdoor or indoor areas. They are meant to be very slow motion, but the idea is to be able to vary the speed ‘s “slowness”, generating a soothing, gentle, relaxing mood. They could also be used in special sites with outstanding views, so for example the pods can turn or alternate themselves for the main position between a forest and a sunset.

4) The Sloped DinerPod Disk

The same concept of the disk but with the added difficulty (and beauty) of sloped action. This can be fitted into sloped terrains with views to the sea, lakes, rivers, valleys or cities.

5) The DinerPod Water Front Loop

This concept is based on cablecar technology. The slow rotating pods are put ona rail, possibly on wooden deck that extends throughout a topographical border such as a waterfront, a beach, a club’s lagoon or any other “view border”. The restaurants or cafes can be put at any point of the loop. In this sketch we see them at both ends. Tons of situations and technical challenges, as well as opportunities come from this idea.

I long for the knowledge and power to make this possiblity a viable reality.

6) The Floating DinerPod Drone

Now imagine the DiningPod as a little boat that floats gently like a japanese lamp in the calmed waters of a lake. Then imagine how a certain number of these lamps arrange themselves in a perfectly coordinated formation. Think of the effect this could have especially at night. I think this can be achieved. The drones can be controlled wireless from a central computer in land or orchestrated with in-board ones. They can be self-solar powered, or previously charged in land with swappable high density batteries. They could move with hidro/jets, stabilized with computer controlled laster tanks, and gyroscopes. They could be air conditioned or heated with natural gas. Also tons of technical and security situations to think about. But nothing impossible.

7) The Overhead Bridge Deck DinerPod Loop

What if we could cross a river through a bridge in an overhead deck, on board of a slow rotating DiningPod? What if we could read a newspaper, have a snack or coffee for brakefast, lunch or supper while crossing? What if we could simply sit in a DinerPod and enyoy the view around? What if this activity turned into a touristic attraction for depressed or underdeveloped areas, reactivating the economy and creating jobs and prosperity? Those questions I would like to answer. I also dream about the possibility of constructing a bridge especially for slow rotating pods, so its very design could be very appealing and enjoyable.

8) How a DinerPod May Look Like

These pieces are much more that simple transport devices, or leisure ones. They are somhow at an intersection just as an iPhone is not only for work but for enjoyment as well. In this regard, the look and feel of the pod can vary from irreverent brigh colors, plastics and composite materials, to wood, bronze, leather and fabric. Also the structure can be made out of wood, aluminum, carbon fiber, steel alloy, or fiberglass.

Depending on the use, the concept could evolve change, adapt. it could be utterly luxurious, or fresh firendly and affordable.

The Art Therapy Line. Equipment for the artistic expression of 1) The Head-Artist Gear: The intention with this de-

vice is to add more grip to the head-artist, using more durable materials and giving the product a nice production appearance.

Also it could be used as a standard device in hospitals.

Left we see a headset as used in Art therapy express, a wonderful institution in Delaware. The device, to a certain extent improvised, is fully functional but is not adaptable to all heads.

2) The Snap-Brush System: The beneficiaries of art

therapy vary from normal stressed people to seriously injured ones, people with mental disorders, motion limitation, etc... So every person has its own needs. One of the differences they can have is motricity. Some can grab and even paint with ease, but others cannot even oppose a thumb or apply pressure. In art express, often they have to attach brushes to other apparatus, using wraping tape. This gave me an idea of a universal way to attach a set of predesigned plastic-foam brushes to any other grabbing device suited for all kinds of hands and abilities.

3) The Shoe-Brush Systems:

This can be a device to offer another experiences to an impaired foot. For those whose possiblity lies in using their feet, here there are two types of shoe brushes, and two types of shoes that can be useful.

This, only in case one of them did not like to use bear feet. They both use the SnapBrush system.

4) The Tabletop Stackable Art Station: This idea

came to me when I visited someone at the hospital. There were especialized mobile gear for everything. May there could e gear for art therapy in hospitals! So, what if administrating a meal could be simlar to administrating an art therapy session? What if there were a station, tupperware-like, stackable and easy to clean for children and even adults to paint over their bed? What if instead of whatching stressful news on tv, or read a book, one could paint for a while as a relaxing activity? This could be used also in schools and art therapy institutions.

The Mobile/Stackable Art Station: What if we could take the idea of the stackable art station a bit further? What if the station was height graduable, mobile and stackable like a shopping kart? I am Sure it would be a challenging design opportunity! Also this could be a device more suited for people with no motion injuries, like psichiatric patients, autists, and others who may like sometime paint standing up.

The SnapBrush Menu: What if we had a system in which we could easily choose from multiple foam brushes that had varied shapes and sizes? This could add more fun to the experience, and also a certain order to the therapist, who sometimes has to attend several people in one turn. Also the menus can be attached to the stackable stations with a specially designed slots.

The Suspended Art Device: This device, is simply a modified tripod with a suspended chair, like a swing. It is mobile and with a certain off-road capability. The idea is to provide impaired people who need to paint with their feet suspended (like the photograph on idea number 3), with the posibility of outdoor art experiences, and to provide also a little more flexibility on indoor areas such as an art therapy institutions or private homes.
