Chocorua Camping Village welcomes well-behaved pets and their responsible owners. Our large, fenced dog park has an agility course and day-care kennels. A dog beach and 5 miles of nature trails provide a fetching good time for you and your pup.

e are a very pet friendly park offering accommodations to make it fun and easy for your family to include your pet in your camping adventure. We provide a large Dog Park area with agility equipment that’s fully fenced and ready for dogs to run and play! Our staffed Day Kennels are available 9am - 6pm daily during July and August if you want to board your pup while you explore the local area. (Fee for Service) Our dedicated Dog Beach is just over the third footbridge at the entrance of our nature trails and Wabanaki Lodge. Toss a stick and your four-legged friend can run and swim to their delight. Just beyond the Dog Beach we have 5 miles of nature trails for you and your pet to walk and explore along the Chocorua River and forest. Have a snack at the picnic table on River Run Trail.

Counting the days to our annual trip!

We love Chocorua! We have been going about twice every summer for about five years now. Always rent a supersite (we switch between sites 46,48,and 50.) The kids (now 9 and 7) and our dog Lucy would love nothing more than to live there all summer! The kids are old enough now to go off on thier bikes up to the camp store and to the arcade.

Nights are spent catching frogs by the pond, and walking through the woods to the boardwalk over the marsh to see shooting stars.

Chocorua KOA is the right place to be

...if you love camping in the woods with a social environment.

The people who live, work, and camp are wonderfully diverse and pleasant. The family that owns the campground does a great job at maintaining it along with regular improvements (these have included a new pavilion and new hiking trails). Now if you are looking for a big open field full of giant RVs, then this is not the right place. There are some cool giant RVs, lots of old fashioned tents, and everything in between. CCV (the initials) is also very dog friendly with a dedicated K9 agility course, off leash area, and isolated dog beach for frolicking pups.

Wabanaki Lodge

A Unique Family Experience

estled in the pines along the banks of Moore’s Pond and the Chocorua River, Wabanaki Lodge is a community of 6 rustic cabins, available for couples, families or groups.

These cabins offer a natural and peaceful setting for relaxing and getting away from everyday commotion. At the lodges there are no cars, no telephones, no electricity; the cabins are only accessible by footbridge or boat.

Wabanaki guests have access to a private beach and dock, playground equipment, and a community fire pit, as well as Chocorua Camping Village’s recreational activities and equipment.

Each of the cabins has its own Native American name and camp charm. All the cabins come with cold running water, stove, refrigerator, cooking / eating supplies, oil lamps, and of course “out“ buildings!

All but one have either a woodstove or fireplace for warmth and enjoyment.

Adahi ~ Meaning ‘by the water’ is our smallest cabin, perfect for couples or families with small children. This cabin has one double bed and two twin beds. It has large curtain windows for a great breeze.

Kamaki ~ the ‘friendship’ cabin is an all time favorite. Wood planking and exposed rafters make this cabin a great family or group retreat. One double bed in the loft, another double in the “master” room, single bunk beds and another single in a room off the kitchen. One of the largest cabins Kamaki sleeps 7 people. The granite and slate fireplace makes for

pleasant night chats and warm lazy mornings.

Talaki ~ the cabin ‘in the woods’ is one of our two rustic lodging with hot water, shower and toilet facilities. It’s a cozy little lodge with a woodstove, one double bed, a set of bunk beds, and a single bed.

Great for families, Talaki sleeps 5.

Tepee ~ ‘Native American home’. Our expanded ‘A-frame’ cottage has a large loft with sliding glass door which opens to a private deck. The loft has a double and two single beds. There is also a separate downstairs bedroom with a double bed. Thus the cottage can sleep a maximum of 6. Tepee has a fireplace and a bathroom with a shower stall. The front 12’x20’ deck with benches and picnic table allows for pleasant outdoor gatherings, as does, the outdoor campfire fireplace.

Woronoake ~ Named after a ‘Tribe of Indians’, this cabin is a favorite for its porch bedroom. It has one double bed, bunk beds and a single bed.

A woodstove will keep you toasty on cold nights.

Natseke ~ ‘In the pines’ has a wonderful open airy living room overlooking the pond. It also has a porch – like bedroom with a double bed and a bunked room. Large windows let plenty of light in, and there is a woodstove to keep you nice and warm.

Wabanaki is a vacation tradition: swimming, bonfires and s’mores, star gazin’ and contemplatin’.

Super Sites

Our Super Sites will give you plenty of space to set-up camp and most are right along the waterfront.

Don’t worry about bringing camp chairs or a grill, all Super Sites are equipped with a Weber Gas Grill, and patio furniture for relaxing on your deck overlooking the tranquil Moore’s Pond. These glamping sites will have you reserving your next stay before you head home! All Super Sites provide 50/30 amp electric service, septic connection, cable and Wi-Fi, as well as a fireplace.

Waterfront & Tent Sites

Tenting at Chocorua Camping Village maybe the best way to experience the great outdoors. Spend the day biking, and hiking our 5 miles of nature trails. Rent a paddle-board to explore the lake, join a volleyball game, and grab a pizza at the camp store. Relax and nap by the campfire to the sound of peepers, birds, and breeze on the water. We have over a dozen sites for Tenting and self-contained campers under 20’, most are Waterfront Sites with Water & Electric hookups and gorgeous views. These are some of our most popular sites, and are perfect for pop-ups, truck campers, and tents. Our tent and water/electric sites all provide a fireplace and picnic table.

Full-Hook-Up Sites

Our Prime Sites provide 3-way hook-ups for camping units of all sizes. These wooded sites are back-in or pull-thru and will comfortably accommodate your 40’ Motorhome, travel trailer, fifth wheel, or hybrid.

e hope you will have a memorable and enjoyable camping vacation with us. To enhance your stay, please let us know how we may help. Please assist us by discussing the following guidelines with all members of your party. A more complete set of policies and regulations is available at our office and posted, on the bulletin board, in the Recreation Center.

To protect our woods and your vacation spot, Chocorua Camping Village KOA (CCV) has taken a strict stand on the issue of moving firewood. Absolutely no firewood, of any kind, from anywhere, can be brought into CCV by campers. CCV defines firewood as any type of wood that you will burn in a campfire or wood

stove, including kindling, pallets, and construction boards.

■ Check-In; for campsite is after 1 pm; for rentals after 4pm. Check-Out is before 11 am.

■ Please respect the tranquility of neighboring campers, QUIET HOURS: 10 pm to 8 am.

■ Alcoholic beverages may be consumed, in moderation, on your campsite ONLY. Please, no alcohol in any public areas of the park.

■ The use of firearms, bows and arrows, slingshots, sparklers or fireworks of any type are not allowed on park grounds.

■ Our town-issued fire permit requires that fires be restricted to fireplaces, and that flames at no time extend more than a few inches above the top of the fireplace. All fires must be completely extinguished before you retire for the evening or leave the campsite, or by 12 midnight at the latest.

■ Please do not cut or damage any trees or vegetation within the park.

■ Children under six must be accompanied by an adult in restrooms, rec. center, store, toddler’s

■ Bicycles may be used on park grounds from

dawn to dusk (when park roadside lights are turned on). Bicycles should not be ridden at a speed greater than a brisk walk at any time with in the park. Children under the age of 16 are required to wear helmets when riding bicycles on the campground and helmets are available in the camp store and rec. hall. At no time should children ride bicycles down the hill by the main entrance of the campground. Please ride only on roads or trails.

■ Boat rentals may be used from dawn to dusk.

■ Youth who are accomplished swimmers over the age of fifteen may enter the pool or beach areas, all other children and youth MUST be accompanied and supervised by a parent or adult at all times at the pool or beach.

• Blue Route: 13-mile loop, moderate. Start at the entrance of the campground for this nice ride on country roads through the town of Tamworth.

Cross Rt. 16 diagonally to the left onto Maple St. Take the first right onto Turkey St. Continue for about 3 miles until you reach Page Hill Rd. Make a left and enjoy the sweetest downhill! Continue on until you come to Rt. 113. Cross Rt. 113 into downtown Tamworth. There are a couple of nice country stores here where you can get a beverage, snack or ice cream treat. You will see the oldest playhouse in NH, Barnstormer’s Theatre, and Remick’s Country Doctor and Farm Museum on your right. Continue on Rt. 113 until you come to Depot Rd. on the left. Take Depot Rd. to the end at Rt. 16. You can take a left here and be back to CCV in 2 miles. In heavy traffic, we recommend you take a right onto Rt. 16 for a short 1/8 mile, then cross onto Rt. 41 at White Lake Pizza. Head north on Rt. 41, there is less traffic and you can

ust a short “buggy ride” away from the KOA, and nestled in quaint Tamworth Village, you will find the historic Remick homestead and farm. The property, settled over 200 years ago by the prominent Remick family, is now known as Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm. This unique attraction offers all generations of visitors a glimpse into the important contributions once made by country doctors, guided tours of each aspect of the Museum & Farm, and hands-on learning activities about the agricultural way of life in New Hampshire, from 1790 to present.

A visit to the farmstead offers the opportunity to surround oneself in the daily activities of a historic farm and imagine life as it might have been lived by the two country doctors who owned and lived on the farmland: Dr. Edwin Remick and his son, Dr. Edwin “Doc” Crafts Remick. Together they served the rural community where they were born and raised and provided 99 years of continuous medical care to Tamworth and surrounding towns.

Six generations of the Remick family worked the family farm, with each generation prospering and active in the town’s history. Before his death in 1993, Dr. Edwin Crafts Remick created a foundation to preserve his home, farm, and family history in a way that the public could learn from and enjoy.

There is much to do at Remick, and it is easy to spend an entire day enjoying daily summertime activities (listed below). Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic; covered and openair picnic tables are located on the grounds, including the bank of the Swift River. While visiting, you can see, feed and interact with sheep, goats, cows, steers, chickens and pigs, and a miniature horse named Sadie. Heirloom crops and vegetables grow in a slope-side garden, a quiet memorial flower garden offers a place to imagine a simpler time, and wild plants and flowers grow abundantly over the entire farmscape. There are several working and history-filled structures on the homestead to view or explore: a cattle barn, milk house, icehouse, maple sugar house, stable, and a historic English barn. A walking trail allows for spectacular views of the pastoral land, pond, distinctive Mount Chocorua and the Ossipee Mountain Range, with other trails located along the Swift River and at offsite locations.

Bird lovers will find many species to enjoy and photographers will find abundant subject matter.

The Museum Center is largely located in the farmhouse Dr. Edwin Crafts Remick shared with his wife, Marion Ella Miles Remick. Today visitors can walk through their modest living quarters, which is largely unchanged from the time they called it home. You can also take in an exhibit of Remick family history and learn about country living traditions and practices.

New in 2016 is the Our Medicine Through Time exhibit, which helps visitors understand how medicines progressed from the backyard to the local pharmacy. This extensive exhibit includes a visit to a simulated soda fountain counter, once common in drug stores.

The Museum Store sells farmfresh eggs, farm-raised ground pork sausage meat, ground beef and lamb, farm-produced herbal remedies, dried herbs and teas, RemickMade maple syrup and locally produced honey. There are many informative guide booklets available on a wide range of topics related to farming and historic traditions, as well as farmrelated children’s books and locally handcrafted gifts. Fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers may be found at the farm stand during the growing season.

All ages will find much to explore, rediscover and learn, and the “back-intime” admission price of $5 per person (free for ages 4 and under) makes it an affordable outing for families. As a Blue Star Museum, active-duty military (including Reserve and National Guard) and their family members enjoy free admission from Memorial Day to Labor Day, which the Museum & Farm extends to veterans and their guest. id you know not far from CCV, the town of Tamworth has an open air farmers’ market every Saturday through Columbus Day weekend?

Jot down your list or just come by and be inspired.

Run by Peg Loughran and Bob Streeter, with a dedicated core of vendors.

The Tamworth Farmers’ Market (TFM) seeks to encourage buying local produce and goods to help support local farming and related enterprises. TFM is celebrating its 10th year supporting local New Hampshire farmers, bakers, brewers and even candlestick makers at the crossroads of 113, 113A and Main St. in Tamworth Village. The market is held 10am-1pm in the parking lot of the Unitarian Universalist, which presents picturesque views of the Behr Farm and the Ossipee Mountains in one direction and Mount Chocorua in the other. You can browse tents or find a seat under a shaded umbrella while listening to local music and

having a late breakfast or a quick lunch. Of course, if you’re looking for the best selection it pays to show up early!

The market has 20-25 regular vendors who specialize in seasonal crops, berries, and fruit.

And already, the market is bursting with a rather long list of offerings: Home-raised pork, lamb, beef, chicken, vegetables, herbs, plants, sheep cheese, yogurt, kefir, maple sugar and syrup, honey, preserves, breads and baked goods, prepared lunch, take- home specialties and new this year, mushrooms both cultivated and foraged. You really can get everything you need for your regular meals or for an impromptu picnic or cookout. The church itself brews Fair Exchange coffee and runs a thrift store with all kinds of treasures and necessities.

Big Pine Natural Area & Fire Tower - Tamworth he Hemenway State Forest, just T under 2,000 acres, consists of glacially carved foothills, scenic vistas,

and thickets of forest. This preserve land lies northerly and centrally within Tamworth. Great Hill, Duck Pond and the 135 acre Big Pines Natural Area are located within the forest. The park’s many trails provide access for walking, hiking, bird, and wildlife observation.

The outstanding view from Great Hill fire tower can be obtained either via a short jaunt ( @ .75 miles round-trip) from the Four Corners parking area on Great Hill Road, (take Great Hill Road from Tamworth Village). The parking area is a few miles up once the road turns to dirt. The trail to the Fire Tower starts at the orange gate on the uphill (right) side of the parking area.

On your way back to the campground stop at the Other Store for a Milk Shake, or The Tamworth Lyceum for a fresh cup of Joe. The Tamworth Farmer’s Market takes place on Saturdays at the town center’s church parking lot, from 9am - 12 noon. The Barnstormer’s Summer Theatre, and Remick’s Country Museum are also right in town of Tamworth, along side the Swift River. See page 12 for Remick’s Events and Happenings, and the ad on this page for Barnstormer’s wonderful performance schedule.

For a longer leisurely, woodsy, and picturesque trek, access the Spur Trail; a mellow 2+ mile round trip that brings you through a stand of ancient white pines and hemlocks with some impressively large trees, and ends up at the Tamworth Fire Tower with a magnificent charted view of the Sandwich Mountain Range. A large sign marks the parking spot for the Big Pines Natural Area on Rt. 113A, 2.9 miles from Tamworth village.

At the entrance of the signed Big Pine Natural Area, you will immediately head into the deep softwood forest. At 0.1 mi.

the trail descends to cross the Swift River on a sturdy footbridge. This bridge and the trails in this area are all the work of the Tamworth Conservation Commission. A routed sign shows the trail network. Take the R (W) fork of the Betty Steele Loop Trail, which wanders upward through those big pines, one reportedly over 14’ in circumference!

From the upper loop junction continue south on the signed Peg King Spur Trail.

The last pitch of the trail up to the summit of Great Hill is fairly inclined. The Great Hill tower was built in 1933 by the Chocorua Conservation Commission, and was taken over by the town of Tamworth in 1977.

The Tamworth Conservation Commission continues to maintain it, primarily for recreational purposes and have added a vista panorama to identify the mountain ranges at the top of the look-out . Be sure to bring your camera to capture some great scenic views, family fun, and maybe some wildlife Water, and a picnic lunch would be recommended to make a day of it!

t Chocorua Camping Village KOA, the owners and staff alike desire to not just “Make it Great”! but, “Make it Great & Make it Green!”

It is important for us as an outdoor adventure business to take responsibility for the affect we have on our environment. We are passionate about taking a progressive long-term managed effort to reduce our impact on our surroundings, while sustaining and improving our beautiful natural ecology for all our family, and guests to enjoy.

Our community garden was lovingly planned and built to allow children and adults alike to come together, grow a bountiful harvest, expand knowledge and enjoyment of our natural and managed landscape.

An herb garden will be added, as well as benches for relaxing, a chalkboard for daily growth updates, and our very own composter!

If everyone pitches in and sets aside their natural waste; vegetable and fruit scraps, cut up newspaper, shredded cardboard, wood ash, pine needles, leaves, coffee grinds, cups and ice cream smorgasbord bowls from our Camp Store, all compostable, we will be able to create our own fertile soil to improve and expand our gardens and flower beds every year!

There will be marked containers for collecting compost or if you are near the garden, by the Dog Park, you can stir in your natural refuse and watch the worms work their magic.

Thank you so much for caring for our environment as much as we do! Composting saves reusable scraps from clogging garbage fills, and as an extra added bonus provides us with money-saving fertile land enhancement.

Together we can make a difference. Join us and watch our Community Garden grow!

Start your day off right with a short journey to the home of Betty Schneider. Betty owns and creates Scandinavian Baking at 12 Deer Hill Rd in Chocorua. Take a right off of Rt. 16 at the blinking light junction of Rt. 113, going towards Madison. There at her home she bakes delightful cakes, breads, cookies and muffins. Betty holds a traditional 10am and 2pm serving of Cardamom Coffee Cake or Swedish Coffee Braid. Open Tuesday thru Saturday from 7am to 4pm, stop in and have a coffee and fresh baked treat. Betty recalls her grandparents and mother saying often in their home country of Sweden, “food should be prepared with love and butter.” We think you will wholeheartedly agree! A trio of friends, one a theatre arts major from Maine, one a bagpipe playing archaeologist, and one photographer and amateur astronomer, came together in 2012 to start the exciting and expanding warehouse of mycological wonders. Well known throughout the region and especially in fine dining establishments from Portsmouth and Portland, the New Hampshire Mushroom guys have dialed in their proprietary growing medium to produce some amazing and delectable fungi. From

Oyster mushrooms to Chestnut mushrooms, Lion’s Mane to Chanterelles, each exotic variety is organically grown in climate controlled chambers. Tours are on Sundays at noon, or can be arranged for groups by calling (603) 323-0097.

In downtown Tamworth, next to the library and across from the nation’s oldest summer theatre, is a duo of businesses that are country simple, yet complex by nature.

The Lyceum is a coffee house with an upscale flavor that hosts local musicians on the weekends, and the Tamworth Distillery is a fount of locally-sourced-ingredient alcohols of the gin, vodka, and liqueurs variety.

With lots of knowledge about the process, the sampling will surely spark your taste buds and have you concocting cocktails with cordials such as Tamarind and Black Trumpet Blueberry.

One of my new favorite hangout spots is the Sap House Meadery in Center Ossipee. Located just 10 minutes from the campground, at 6 Folsom Road, this wonderful entrepreneurial business produces tasty wine from honey. Mead is possibly the oldest alcoholic drink in history and the Sap House Meadery has perfected the ancient recipe in many alluring flavors. Stop in for a taste testing of all their seasonal favorites, sit down for a mead cocktail, and enjoy a locally sourced cheese plate. Their Maple Mead is a fantastic New England gift and their tapas soft tacos are artfully chef prepared. The Meadery is open Wednesday-Friday 3-8pm, Saturday 1-8pm, and Sunday 1-5pm.

On the Water ~ Kayak, Canoe, & Paddle-boarding Flat water -

• Moore’s Pond - From our rental boat dock, a short paddle to the south bend of Moore’s Pond will bring you to the peaceful rubble of our historic granite dam. A beauty to behold, the hydro-electric dam has been out of operation since the flood in 1914. Paddle amongst the giant blocks of granite where Bass can be seen hovering around the scattered piles of fortitude.

An allusive fish to bite, you may have luck on the line with a worm at dusk or dawn. A small coveredbridge behind the dam lends itself as a picturesque backdrop to a relaxing experience in nature, paddle in hand.

• Chocorua Lake - A bountiful feast for the eyes and calm for the soul, to float and paddle, peacefully surrounded by forest and Chocorua Mountain majesty. Accessible and sandy bottomed, this nonmotorized lake is heralded for its unspoiled, pristine environment as well as its refreshing cool rinse from the summer’s heat. At the base of the rock crested peak, you can take in all of Chocorua’s timeless grandeur, caressing its waters with your self-powered vessel. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch, and camera to capture this astounding New England panorama.

Rapids -

• Ossipee River - A mellow, wide-river rapid experience can be had in a day with a drop off at the beginning of the outflow of Berry Bay in the village of Effingham Falls. The put-in for this Class 1 to Class 2 river is off of Rt 25 heading East towards Porter and Parsonsfield, Maine. Take a left on to Rt 153 ( Green Mnt / Eaton Rd ), cross the river via bridge and take the next left on to Parsons Rd. Put-in Location GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 43.79428 Longitude: -71.06018 Take-out Location GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 43.80644 Longitude: -70.88902

• Bear Camp River - A 26.3 mile tributary of Ossipee Lake that leads to the Atlantic Ocean. The Bear Camp River rapids are a good challenge for an intermediate paddler. Meandering to racing, the white water rapids are Class 2 to Class 5 throughout the Saco River watershed. Rising at the Sandwich Notch, Bear Camp flows southeast, careening over Beede Falls, and running along Rt 25/113 to Tamworth, NH. Access for a 3.5 mile kayak adventure begins on Rt NH 113 - Jackman Pond Rd, at the bridge, approximately .2 miles off of Rt 113/25.

There are 7 notable rapids in the short stretch beginning just after put-in at the bridge. Cold Brook Rapid will start you off with a rigorous Class 3, followed by the Bear Camp Gorge where the river splits around an island. The left channel is recommended for ease, the right is a true Class 4 with drops up to 6’, eddies,

and a powerful exit hole that guarantees a roll.

The Bear Camp Dam, removed in 2003, is another tricky Class 4 rapid with a dramatic drop on the far left route, or a smaller drop hugging the river bed to the right. Nearing the end of the trip, a playground of Class 2 + rapids of the Ossipee Surf are fun to paddle and dip around in. The largest drop of the ride will be awaiting the experienced paddlers on the right. Most intermediate kayakers will want to skirt the hole by sticking to the left bank.

The Whittier Rapids at a Class 3 will finish the paddle excursion with a take out at Rt 113 - Tamworth Road Bridge.

Mount Chocorua White Mountain National Forest Please consult a good trail map before you hike Mt. Chocorua. The following information is intended to provide an idea of lengths and variety of trails only. Any of the round trip options to the summit are over 7 miles and a will take 6 hours or more.

Hiker Responsibility Code: You are responsible for yourself, so be prepared.

Remember the ten essentials: Map, compass, warm clothes, extra food and water, flashlight or headlamp, matches/ firestarter, whistle, rain/wind gear, and pocket knife.

The White Mountain National Forest requires a recreation fee at most trailheads and developed recreation areas. There are self-serve pay stations at these locations. Single bills are recommended for pay envelopes.

To reach the trailhead, turn on to Chocorua Lake Road off of Rt. 16, between Big and Little Chocorua Lake. Follow this dirt road and turn left onto Fowler’s Mill Road. Continue on Fowler’s Mill Road to Paugus Mill Road where you will see a sign on your right for the Liberty, Bolles, and Brook Trails. Please respect private property on the way to the parking area. Trail distances and estimated hiking times from trailhead: Junction of Hammond trail: 2.7 miles, 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Jim Liberty Cabin: 3.3 miles, 2 hours, 40 min. Brook Trail: 3.6 miles, 3 hours Mt. Chocorua Summit (via Brook Trail)

3.9 miles, 3 hours, 20 minutes Elevation Gain: 2,500ft.

Trail narrative: Leaving the NE side of the parking lot, the trail ascends at a steady, moderate grade along an old bridle path. The Durrell Brook is crossed at 1.1 miles, one third of the way to Jim Liberty Cabin. The Hammond Trail enters to the right 2.7 miles. The Liberty Trail continues to Jim Liberty Cabin at 3.3 miles. The Liberty Trail meets the Brook Trail on a ledge at 3.6 miles. Continue on the Brook Trail another .2 miles to the summit of Mt. Chocorua. (The Beeline enters 10 yards from the Liberty and Brook Trail junction.) The summit of Mt. Chocorua is .2 miles farther via the Brook Trail.

Loop Hike Options: The Liberty Trail and the Brook Trail can be combined for an excellent day hike loop.

Brook Trail

Follow directions to Liberty Trailhead above. Trail distances and estimated hiking times from trailhead: Claybank Crossing: 2.5 miles, 1 hour, 40 minutes.

Liberty Trail junction: 3.4 miles, 3 hours. Mt. Chocorua summit: 3.6 miles, 3 hours, 15 minutes. Elevation gain: 2,300 feet. Trail Narrative: With its steep ledges the Brook Trail is more challenging than the Liberty Trail. It has excellent views on the rocky ledges near the summit of Mt. Chocorua . The trail can be hazardous in wet or icy conditions. The trail begins by following a gravel road beyond the parking lot gate. The trail leaves the gravel road on the right at .4-mile and follows south of Claybank Brook. The trail passes to the

junction with the Bickford Path and continues to the first ledge at 3.0 miles near where the new Beeline relocation enters on the left. The trail climbs the steep, open ledges of the Farlow Ridge with cairns and yellow blazes to mark the way. The Liberty Trail enters from the right at 3.4 miles with the summit of Mt. Chocorua another .2 miles via the Brook Trail.

Piper Trail

The trailhead is on Route 16, 6 miles south of Conway behind the old Davies’s General Store.

Trail distances and estimated hiking times from trailhead: Nickerson Ledge Trail: 1.2 miles, 1 hour Chocorua River Crossing: 1.8 miles, 1 hour, 20 minutes Camp Penacook Spur Trail: 2.8 miles, 2 hours, 15 minutes Mt Chocorua summit: 4.3 miles,

3 hours, 30 minutes Elevation gain: 2,700 feet Trail Narrative: The trail starts on a gradual grade following an old logging road. The Weetamoo Trail turns off to the left at .08 miles and the Nickerson Ledge Trail turns off to the right at 1.4 miles. The Piper Trail ascends moderately past a cleared outlook to Carter Ledge. It than becomes steeper and changes in to a series of switch backs, stone steps and paving. The Camp Penacook Spur Trail at 3.1 miles branches off to the left and ascends .2 miles to the shelter. Open ledges are soon discovered giving great views to the north, east and south.

The Champney Brook Trail comes in on your right at 3.9 miles and .2 miles further, the West Side Trail comes in on your right. The Piper Trail continues following yellow blazes over open ledges to the summit.

Our Namesake... Mount Chocorua The Legend...

Part of the Sandwich mountain range, Mount Chocorua, stands picturesque, framed by sky and tree.

It is one of New Hampshire’s most beloved mountains for its great hiking trails and beautiful familiarity.

Mt. Chocorua received its fame after 1725, when the Pequawket Indians and the settlers of the area, under direction from British Army Captain Lovewell, fought against each other in the first and last battle of the White Mountains.

Men on both sides were killed and the Pequawket tribe picked up their village and moved to the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Canada. Only one proud and bold Indian chief stayed behind; Chief Chocorua. Chocorua kept his young son Tuamba with him in the mountains, teaching him to hunt and instilling the love, resource, and pride of nature within him.

The Chief befriended a settler family, the Campbells, in the town now named Tamworth. Cornelius Campbell, his wife Caroline and their ten year old son Cornelius Jr. agreed to care for little Tuamba while Chief Chocorua was called away to a Pow Wow in Canada.

Tuamba loved playing with Cornelius Jr. and very much enjoyed Caroline’s cooking. He acquired a curiosity of the different tastes of the settler’s kitchen, one day trying a dish that was meant to kill the wolves attacking the Campbell’s cattle. It was strong poison meant for large animals; Tuamba became very ill and died. With heavy hearts, the Campbells buried Tuamba in their farm field.

Two months later, while Cornelius was away from the farm, Chief Chocorua returned to find his little son dead and buried. Agony and betrayal coursing through his blood; he slit Caroline’s throat, mortally wounded her son, and ran off screaming to his mountains.

When Cornelius returned to his cabin and found his family slain, he knew it was Chocorua. He grabbed his musket and ran to the mountains to avenge his family. He pursued Chocorua to the highest peak of the mountain.

Chocorua stood on the edge of the highest boulder, looking at the only white man he’d called friend; he knew that Cornelius would kill him, so he raised his arms to the sky and shouted “Evil spirits breathe death upon the

cattle of the white man. Wind and fire destroy your dwellings. Panthers and wolves howl and fatten on your bones. Chocorua goes now to the Great Spirit.” And he leapt off the mountain, crushing his body and releasing his legend on the rocks far below.

Exactly two years later the body of Cornelius Campbell was found in the woods near his cabin, partially eaten by wolves; no explanation of his demise evident. The mountain people believed in the curse of Chocorua, and dissuaded many farmers from settling the area of Tamworth and Conway, New Hampshire. One hundred years to the day of the Pequawket Chief Chocorua’s

death, a devastating plague killed all the cattle from Albany to Conway, New Hampshire.

Remember this haunting legend when you reach the peak of Chocorua.

Look out over the mountains he called home, imagine the inner struggle he must have felt as he sealed his fate, creating a legend to last throughout time. To summit Mt. Chocorua is not only achieving a New Hampshire classic, but is also delving into the history of events that entices us to gaze over the mysterious, majestic White Mountains.

Hoss the Dog Whisperer Bob a.k.a. Hoss our own “dog whisperer”, has been with CCV for 39 years. His story is as interesting as the Legend of Chocorua. Many moons ago, his car broke down near the campground and he decided to stay the night in our little village. Since that time, the call of the wild keeps calling him back to the campground, and he has made the campground home for 39 years.

Lee and Pam - have been full-time RVers for 3 years. They enjoy spending their spring and summer in New England visiting family and friends, and head south to become snowbirds for the fall and winter. You will meet Pam in the camp store and Lee fixes all things mechanical. We are excited to have them on our work camping team!

Fred and Cindy - are returning for their second year work camping and are looking to settle in the Chocorua area.

When they are not working, they spend their time traveling and catching up with their 5 children who live all across the country. Before retirement, Fred used to be a State Trooper in Florida, and Cindy a Respiratory Therapist. We are excited to have them here, working in Security and Housekeeping.

Dave - a resident of Tamworth, is back again for a second year to help on grounds and housekeeping. He is great at fixing things, has built three houses in his life and claims he has never had more fun. He rides a sparkling blue motorbike and also has a passion for sailboats. We are very happy to have him join us this season and put his skills to work.

Gwen - will be returning this season for the busy summer months, and is looking forward to seeing familiar faces. You meet her mainly in the office, but she comes from a nature conservation background and will be glad to share her passion and expertise for nature with you. Want to know about our resident

Boyd and Jill - from San Diego, California, have been all over America in a pop-up trailer for the last six years. Having worked at State Park Campgrounds in Florida and Vermont, they were not afraid to meet wildlife and have even made friends with a bear. They are avid hikers and try to hike at least 2 miles a day. As real outdoors people, they will help us on Grounds, and Jill will use her gardening skills and embellish the campground with flowering plants.

She has 3 children and 4 grandchildren to keep her busy. Nancy loves her KOA family and we are blessed to have her on our team for the second year!

This wonderful couple started dating in High School and have been married 55 years now. They have 5 children, and by now, their main passion is traveling.

Shawnee - Originally from central New York, Shawnee has been traveling quite a bit lately. She most recently returned from a winter with her sister in Colorado. This is her 2nd season with CCV KOA and we hope she becomes part of our permanent team! You will see Shawnee in the office, store, and here and there as she becomes a master of all trades. Shawnee is looking forward to kayaking and movie nights with the CCV gang at the Rec Hall.

Nancy - Living in Ossipee, Nancy is just a short drive away. With a great knowledge background from Home Depot, Nancy lends her expertise to many projects and works with Helen and Mike in housekeeping. She enjoys hiking, fishing, gardening and anything in the outdoors. Nancy states “Life is good! Always stay humble and kind.”

Austin - Hailing from Fort Collins, Colorado, Austin is almost ‘part-ofthe-family’ as he has been dating our granddaughter/niece Bethany for several years. Austin is very outgoing, enjoys the outdoors and spicy foods. He is pursuing a career in forestry, wildlife, and natural resources and craves learning and gaining new life experiences. We are excited to have Austin join our recreation team, and we will keep him busy working on the nature trails.

Dekota - Originally from Salem, MA, Dekota has grown up locally in Ossipee, NH. He loves dogs, and most animals.

Enjoys fishing and all outdoor activities.

Dekota is a hard worker and likes to help others. One of the youngest of our team, Dekota will soon be turning 20!

Ethan - The whipper-snapper of our 2016 team, Ethan is back for his second year. Part of the family, Ethan is a cousin to the Spencers, and Barry is his Uncle.

Ethan is a good sport and helps out with the boat rentals and most often cares for the dogs in the daycare kennels. We can’t wait to hear Ethan’s rendition of a Beatles song at Karaoke this year.

Donna and Lynn Luther come to us from Houston, TX. She enjoys the outdoors, travel, reading, and RV life. As a retired math teacher, school librarian, and education administer, Donna now loves meeting new people, taking hikes, and walking her dog! Lynn is a retired Texas public school educator/ administrator with 38 years of education experience. They love to travel, see new places, and meet new people. Donna and Lynn have two children, Emily who lives in New Hampshire and Nathan who lives in Austin, TX, and one twelve year old Australian Shepherd (Sugar).

Once over the mid-section, the totter landing can be a little shocking; keep your tone upbeat, praise your furry friend to the highest and she will be ready for a repeat performance.

Next up, around the bend, is a small A-Frame for the vertically challenged pups. Shiatsus to Chihuahuas will be at

the top of their game on this miniature mountain.

A short jog further will bring your cherished companion to our largest piece of entertainment; the regulation sized Dog Walk, a full 36 feet of prancing pleasure. Whilst strutting their stuff on the 12 foot eye-level plank your courageous canine will be the ruler of the course! How C.C.V. Came to be...

A Brief History of your Favorite Vacation Spot

A

s you stroll the grounds of Chocorua Camping Village and our activity trails, we hope you enjoy the natural camping environment as much as we do.

It doesn’t take much to imagine back over 400 years ago when the land was untamed and just starting to populate and be divided into the original Tamworth town lots. Back in the 1600’s this area was discovered and utilized by homesteaders to farm and graze their cattle on the nutrient rich hay of the marsh. Moore’s pond was so loaded with trout, it was noted, that the area fisher folk netted up to 50 bushels a day. If you want to try your hand at catching some of those tasty ancestors, line and bait your pole and get ready to enter our fishing derby!

Around a century ago, the quick flowing Chocorua River, entering in and exiting out of Moore’s Pond, sparked the interest of the Chocorua Innkeepers. They purchased the existing granite mill dam at the southern narrow of the pond, where the river converges. In 1912, the owners of the Chocorua Inn converted the mill dam into a hydro-electric operation hoping to supply energy to part of the town. A year or so later their hard efforts were demolished in the infamous Hundred Year flood, never to be reconstructed. As the eastern portion of the dam was breached, the levy broke and released two thirds of the pond in a few short hours. The 15 foot drop in water level increased the acreage, extended the waterfront line, and allowed the marshlands to thrive again.

The remnants of the old granite dam are a beautiful portrait to New England’s resourcefulness. We encourage you to take paddle up the narrow in a kayak or canoe and wonder at the ingenuity and tenure it would have taken to cut, haul, and place the huge granite blocks that comprised the picturesque dam. Don’t forget to bring along your pole and worms, the bass love to hide in the shade of the underwater rubble.

Years later in the late 1940’s, Pastor Edward Hayes, of Chocorua Village Church, admired the land along the Chocorua River and Moore’s Pond as he walked the woods with his wife Ruth. After consideration and some ample bargaining he secured the 185 acre parcel for just a dollar an acre! He started construction on the community of seven rustic cabins in the 1950’s, naming

them Wabanaki Lodge after the Native American Tribe. All building materials and eventually Lodge guests had to be ferried in by rowboat. In those times vacation was a family affair, often lasting all summer, and at Wabanaki Lodge the retreat came complete with a to-do list of projects and chores for the guests to accomplish during their stay!

The early 1970’s brought a young Spencer clan to the Tamworth area. Leo and Shirley Spencer had heard through family rumors that the land and lodges of Wabanaki were up for sale.

Having spent memorable summers at the pond side cabins, the Spencers purchased the lodges and undeveloped property from Leo’s Uncle Ed Hayes in 1973.

With a 1969 CASE tractor, Lee started the gradual and continual process of road and site construction, keeping the natural environment intact as much as possible. After some harrowing rowboat experiences with 2 young children, a baby, and 2 eager swimming dogs, to get to the main cabin at Wabanaki, the Spencer’s residence, a series of bridges were built to access the Lodges. Chocorua Camping Village opened up to the public with 10 sites and a comfort station (bathroom facility) in 1975. While Leo designed and constructed the Rec Hall and Camp Store, Shirley, a 6th grade teacher, spent her summer breaks working the office, maintaining the cabins, and creating the business infrastructure of Wabanaki Lakeside Vacation Corporation.

Together, with family and staff they have created nearly 35 years of family vacation opportunities and memories. Chocorua Camping Village continues to grow and improve every year. The Fishing Line M oore’s Pond and the Chocorua River are a fisherperson’s delight! About 50 acres in size and up to 38 feet in depth, our aquatic environment is home to several species of game fish including: Bass, Rainbow and Brown Trout, Pickerel, Perch, Pike, Sunfish, Shiners, and Hornpout.

A cast line with a worm, crawler, lure, or a fly is sure to hook a live one. If it’s too small, remove the hook and try again. You’ve got all day and a great tan to catch also.

Walk on the Wild Side...

Hiking along our nature trails is fun and relaxing! But here’s a peak at the wild side!

Listed below is a guide to help you identify some of the critters you might encounter!

The Eastern Chipmunk is a small ground squirrel.

It has reddish-brown fur with a white belly and a white stripe, bordered by two black stripes, on each side.

They grow up to eleven inches long.

This animal lives in open woods, forest edges, and brushy areas. They dig burrows up to ten feet long.

Usually the main burrow has enlarged cavities for storing food. Inside the burrow, chipmunks will build a nest with leaves.

The entrance to the burrow is a hole about two inches wide.

Eastern Chipmunks breed in early spring.

They only have one litter of three to five babies.

The red squirrel is a small squirrel with reddish to reddish-gray fur on top and a white or cream underside.

It has white around its eyes. Its tail is not as long or bushy as the tail of other tree squirrels.

In the summer, the red squirrel may have a black stripe on its sides. It’s curved front claws and powerful hind legs make it a very good climber and jumper!

The red squirrel eats a wide-variety of foods including insects, seeds, bark, nuts, fruits, mushrooms and pine seeds or cones. Sometimes it eats insects, young birds, mice and rabbits.

A large part of its diet is made up of pine seeds.

In the fall, it will cut green pine cones from trees and store them in the ground. It also stores nuts and seeds in piles or middens under logs, at the base of trees and underground. It doesn’t always find or eat all of the seeds and nuts it has stored. Because of this, the red squirrel fills an important niche in spreading seeds in the forest.

The beaver is North America’s largest rodent and is built for life in the water. Adults can be up to four feet long and weigh over 60 pounds.

The beaver has webbed hind feet and a large, flat, nearly hairless tail. It uses its tail to help maintain its balance when it is gnawing on trees.

It will also slap its tail against the water to signal danger or to warn away predators Most of the beaver’s diet is made up of tree bark and cambium, the soft tissue that grow under the bark of a tree.

They especially like the bark of willow, maple, birch, aspen, cottonwood, beech, poplar, and alder trees.

Beavers mate for life, but if one mate dies, the other one will find another mate. Beavers mate when they are about three years old. Females have one litter of kits a year between April and June. Before birth, the female will make a soft bed in the lodge. The baby’s eyes are open when they are born and they can swim within 24 hours of birth and will be exploring outside the lodge with their parents within a few days. They will stay with their parents for two years. Beavers can live to be 20 years old. When beavers build dams, they create new wetland environments for other species.

These wetlands can help slow erosion, raise the water table and help purify the water. Beavers can play a major role in succession, when beavers abandon their lodges and dams, aquatic plants will take over the pond and eventually, shrubs and other plants will grow and the area will become a meadow. The shrubs in the meadow will provide enough shade to allow tree seedlings to grow, once the trees grow, they will take over and the land will turn into a woodland area.

The raccoon is often recognized by its black mask and tail covered by white rings. The name “raccoon” come from the Indian word “arakum” which means “he scratches with his hands.” Adult raccoons may be up to 3 feet long and weigh up to 30 pounds, although some male raccoons can weigh up to 40 pounds!

Raccoons are found across most of North America.

Raccoons are omnivorous and have an opportunistic diet dictated by seasonal protein and energy needs and food availability. Breeding occurs between January and March, and peaks in February. Raccoons pair only to mate, and do not form long-term pair-bonds.

White Tail Deer- referring to the white underside of the tail, which is held conspicuously erect like a flag when the animal is alarmed or running.

W h i t e tail deer have good eyesight and acute hearing, but depend mainly on their sense of smell to detect danger.

Bucks develop a pair of spiked antlers by the fall of their second year, when they become fierce fighters for the autumn mating season. Winners of head-on clashes are awarded mating privileges with the does in the vicinity. Male’s antlers are shed from January to March and grow out again in April

or May. Mating occurs from October to December.

At birth, fawns are spotted with white and weight between 3 and 6 lbs.

White-tail deer feed on a variety of vegetation, depending on what is available in their habitat. They are browsers feeding on twigs, leaves, bark, shrubs, the fruits and nuts of most vegetation, as well as lichens and other fungi.

White-tail deer wave their tails characteristically from side to side when they are startled. White-tail deer may bound at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour through tangled terrain in a forest. White-tail deer are good swimmers and often enter large streams and lakes to escape predators. White-tail deer are the most nervous and shy of our deer.

Moose- Moose generally live in forested areas where there is snow cover in the winter, and prefer moist conditions where there are lakes, ponds, and swamps.

Standing six feet high at the shoulder a n d weighing over one thousand pounds, this giant commands respect.

T h e Algonkian Indians had an appropriate name for this magnificent animal.

Their word “mons” or “moz” (depending on the dialect) means “twig eater”.

Although moose lack teeth in the front of the upper jaw, they have little trouble dealing with the woody plant material that constitutes much of their diet. Willow and Birch are it’s favorites but aquatic plants, particularly water shield, yellow pond lily and pondweed, constitute a preferred and important part of the moose’s diet in summer.

A moose in its prime has little to fear from most predators, for few animals apart from man possess the ability to kill it.

Mating takes place in September and October.

Fe males attract males with their long, moaning vocalizations, which can be heard up to 2 miles away.

They also emit a powerful scent. Rival males compete for access to females during the breeding season. Males may simply assess which is larger, and the smaller bull retreats, or they may engage in battles that can become violent. There is an eight month gestation period and females give birth during late May and early June.

Few Bull Moose survive longer than 15 years in the wild and the oldest recorded cow moose was 22 years old.

Moose are active throughout the day with activity peaks during dawn and dusk. Moose are good swimmers, able to sustain a speed of 6 miles an hour.

They move swiftly on land. Adults can run as fast as 35 miles per hour.

Moose have poor sight but their hearing and sense of smell are excellent. Their large ears can be rotated 180 degrees and their keen noses find food below deep snow.

Always remember to respect our fellow creatures and give them lots of space. Never try to approach or catch our woodlands friends as you may end up with way more than you bargained for. And remember, you can always join us for a nature walk to learn more about the species in these woods!

Birds of a Feather...

B

irds are an integral, interesting, and beautiful part of our ecosystem here at Chocorua Camping Village. Similar to bees, bats, and frogs, birds are indicators of positive, and negative affects humans are having upon our environment. Not only a joy to observe, and listen to their song, birds help keep down insect population, propagate crops and flowers, and can show signs of dangers in natural balance.

Below are a handful of birds you may sight, walking our trails, boating on Moores Pond, or relaxing at your waterfront site.

The Loon ~ Gavia immer - Believed to be closely related to one of the most primitive aquatic birds, Hesperornis, from 100 million years ago, Loons are strikingly graceful and fascinating to watch.

Easily recognized for its shiny, black body with white speckles, white and black rings around its neck, red piercing eyes, and its memorable, eerily cry of the Loon.

Loons breed and live in regions as far North as Greenland, and as far South as NH. They can be spotted on secluded lakes, ponds, and estuaries. Loons are a diving bird that feed on Perch, Trout, Sunfish, and young Bass. Loons are monogamous, and form long-term bonds, often calling out to an absent mate with its ‘woman’s wail’ call.

The male Loon chooses a location to mate, and the female follows to lay eggs between late May and early July. New Hampshire was the first state to ban lead weights for fishing for the direct link to a large number of Loon deaths by poisoning. The majestic Loon can be seen and heard throughout the Spring and Summer here on Moores Pond.

Whip-Poor-Will ~ Caprimulgus vociferous - One of the most distinct calls, a WhipPoor-Will is a nocturnal-singing ground bird.

Fitting inside of a large hand, this endangered Pheasant-colored bird feeds on moths and insects.

This vociferous bird is very specific about where it habitates, and feeds. It nests in forested areas with young brush, and forage in open areas, such as gravel pits or power lines.

Whip-Poor-Wills prefer Pine Barrens, particularly those that are recovering from a disturbance of fire.

Whip-Poor-Wills are in serious decline since the 1970’s and are being studied in the only two-known populated areas recorded. One is the nearby Ossipee Pine Barrens. Listen for the call of the Whip-Poor-Will when out on a night walk. It is something you will not forget.

Great Blue Heron ~ Ardea Herodias - The largest of its species, the Great Blue Heron has a wing span of 6 feet, moving gracefully with its 4-foot lithe body. Great Blue heron can be found in a variety of aquatic environments that provide the large avian with plenty of fish, frogs, insects, small rodents, and even other birds.

Choosing new mates every year, the male and female cooperate in gathering sticks, making a nest, and trade off sitting on the 4-6 light blue eggs. You will see this entrancing bird in our marshlands off the Long Bridge, stoic still, or wading patiently in search of prey.

Red Wing Black Bird ~ Agelaius phoneniceus - These remarkable vibrant birds are one of the first to migrate back to New Hampshire in early Spring, often when there is still snow, and leafless trees.

Males migrate first to find prime foraging and breeding grounds by bodies of water, marsh, and wetlands.

The males are small, dark, and shiny black with a deep red, flashy patch rimmed with a yellow wing bar. These distinct patches, called epaulets, and their “Oak-a-Lee” call make these song birds a delight to observe. The larger the epaulet, the larger the ‘harem’; and these guys are very territorial when guarding their brown and speckledwhite nesting females.

Feeding on primarily insects and seeds, the Red Wings can be spotted by the Cattails off the Long Bridge.

Mocking Bird ~ Mimus polyglottus - The Mocking bird can be heard loud and clear singing its little heart out to whatever succession of other birds’ calls and songs it can. They are the original natural mix masters. Grey on top, and white on its underbelly, the Mocker’s plumage is tipped with white, giving an image of bars across its back.

Mocking Birds are very aggressive in defense of their territory and have been known to attack cats, hawks, and even raccoons to protect their brood.

Feeding on insects, seeds, and berries, these birds forage often to fuel their song. A male Mocker can sing as many as 200 distinct songs, and will repeat patterns throughout day and night when looking for a mate.

Robert Frost 1917 Written at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH Lady Slipper ~ Cypripedium acaule - Growing in moist, rich soil, this moccasin flower is New Hampshire’s official state wildflower. Most commonly pink, sometimes white, the Lady Slipper flourishes in acidic forest conditions, like that of our White Pine barrens.

A member of the Orchid family, this wildflower is regaled for its solitary blossom stemming from two to three glossy, ribbed leaves. It is a historically protected flower, and should be admired, photographed, but not disturbed.

flowers gain from both mushrooms, and roots of White Pine and Beech trees. Used by Native Americans and Colonists alike for eye infections and forms of epilepsy, giving it its historic nickname, ‘fit root’.

Queen Anne’s Lace ~ Daucus Carota - known as wild carrot, these attractive, tall wildflowers proliferate in dry fields, and gravelly trailsides. The delicate-looking, flat white clusters grow in compound umbrels on a single stem, giving the appearance of intricate round lacework. A tiny red or purple floret hides in the center, considered to be the ’pin-prick’ from Queen Anne. While the tap root is from the original carrot family, the leaves are extremely toxic, and should not be ingested.

Red Trillium ~ Trillium erectum, also known as wakerobin, purple trillium, or stinking Benjamin, is a species of flowering plant native to the east and north-east of North America.

It is a spring ephemeral, an herbaceous perennial whose lifecycle is synchronised with that of the deciduous forests where it lives.

This plant can tolerate extreme cold in winter, surviving temperatures down to -31 °F. Like all trilliums, its parts are in groups of three, with 3-petalled flowers above whorls of pointed triple leaves. The leaves contain calcium oxalate crystals and crystal raphide, and should not be consumed by humans. The flowers are a deep red

Indian Pipe ~ Monotrope uniform - is a true flower but without chlorophyll; it is ghost white, deriving its nutrients in a mutualistic relationship (known as mycorrhiza) with fungi in the surrounding soil.

Growing in our shaded wilderness, in rich, decaying soil, these mesmerizing

colour, though there is a white form. The flowers have the smell of rotting meat, as they are pollinated by flies.

Red Clover ~ Trifolium pratense Blooming from May thru September this dense, rounded, magenta ground-flower is part of the pea family. Found in meadows, pastures, and forest fields, this edible wildflower was widely used by Native American and traditional Chinese medicines. A tonic of clover was utilized for colds and respiratory conditions, and a salve for skin eczema. Below you will find a recipe for Clover syrup, wonderful over fruit, pancakes, and to sweeten tea.

Clover Syrup

- 4 Cups Red or White Clover flowers - 2 ½ Cups of water - 2 Tbsp Lemon juice - 3 ½ Cups Organic cane sugar Boil flower heads for @ 10 minutes, until color steeps into the water. Strain, and reserve 2 ¼ cups of the colored water. Add lemon juice and sugar to reserved water. Bring to boil, reduce heat, simmer and stir until syrup thickens. Store in sterile glass jar in fridge for up to 6 months.

The Geological Wonder of Madison Boulder T

he Madison Boulder is a huge granite erratic measuring 83 feet in length, 23 feet in height above the ground, 37 feet in width, and weighs upwards of 5,900 tons! The 17-acre site was acquired by the state of N.H. in 1946 and in 1970, Madison Boulder was designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior given that the enormous rock is; “ an outstanding illustration of the power of an ice sheet to pluck out very large blocks of fractured bedrock and move them substantial distances.”

Madison Boulder is made of fine-grained feldspar and larger quartz crystals that welled up under great pressures from a molten mass deep in the earth over 200 million years ago. Upon cooling, the molten rock hardened. Over the millions of intervening years, softer materials on the earth’s surface were removed by erosion from wind and water while the hardened granite of Madison Boulder remained.

Most authorities trace Madison Boulder to the Whitton or White Ledges, 12.5 and 4 miles respectively, to the northwest. Still a few maintain that the boulder so closely resembles one of the four types of rock that form Mount Willard in Crawford Notch, 24 miles to the northwest, that the ice sheet

must have brought it from there. Madison Boulder lies on ‘glacial drift’; unsorted sediments left by the retreating ice sheet.

Thousands of years ago New England was blanketed by a great sheet of packed snow and ice.

The ice pack moved slowly across the landscape, some¬times advancing, sometimes retreating.

More than a mile thick, it flowed across even the highest mountains in a generally southeasterly course. As the ice passed over rock outcroppings, blocks of otherwise resistant material, were broken from the parent rock along naturally occurring fracture lines.

Usually the fragments were carried only a short distance allowing their source to be easily traced.

To journey to the Madison Boulder Natural Area, drive to the end of Boulder Road, off Route 113 in Madison, NH. Bring a picnic lunch, camera, and adventurous spirit, and get ready to be impressed with this huge glacial erratic rock, a legend of New Hampshire’s geological past.

Outdoor Adventures in Sandwich

H

olding the picturesque Sandwich Mountain range, Mount Israel at the center, and the natural habitat of Squam Lake to the southwest, as its crown jewels, the White Mountain National Forest is easily accessed in Sandwich, NH, for both beauty and recreation.

The White Mountain National Forest encompasses nearly 800,000 acres in New Hampshire and western Maine.

The mountain ranges, woodlands, rivers, waterfalls, flora, and fauna make it a natural attraction for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. On all hikes and adventures in the wilderness, one will need at hand: a trail map, and or GPS of the unknown area, water, and snacks. A light jacket for brisk mountain peaks is recommended.

If you and your family want to explore, climb rocks, and enjoy a short jaunt to a waterfall pool, head over to Sandwich Notch Road, the base for many hiking trails. Traveling from the intersection of Routes 113 and Main St. (Rt 109) in Center Sandwich, go northwest on Diamond Ledge Road for about 3.5 miles.

Along the way, it becomes Sandwich Notch Road, a narrow and steep dirt road.

The parking area for the Beede Falls will be on your right, indicated by a sign.

If you desire a little more challenge, a short hike up Mt Israel on the Wentworth Trail, 4.1 miles roundtrip will make a nice day trip. Tranquil and scenic with views of Squam and Winnipesaukee Lakes, the trailhead starts at Mead Base, a Boy Scout camp. Located on Diamond Ledge Road, traveling from Rt 113, turn right onto Main St (Rt 109) which turns into

Grove Street, then bear left onto Diamond Ledge Road, and park in the dirt lot to the right. Access to the trail entrance can be found behind the historical main building. Follow signs behind building to Wentworth Trail.

A longer, but mellow-grade hike to the serene Flat Mountain Pond can be enjoyed in a long day trip. The roundtrip trail is 10 miles, mostly along an old railroad bed, and does have 2-3 river rock crossings. To access the trail, follow Bennett Street (not far left off of Rt 113A), you will come to a narrow, gravel part of the road. There is a parking area to access the entrance of the first trailhead, Bennett Street Trail. Hike along the Pond Brook with many wonderful views of the river and rock cascades. At about 2 miles in from trailhead you will connect back with Flat Mountain Pond Trail on the old Beede River logging railroad. At about 5 miles into the trail you will come upon the mile-long Flat Mountain Pond, and the White Mountain National Forest shelter overlooking South Tripyramid Mountain, in the Sandwich Mountain Dome range. The return trip can be taken same as the hike up, or you may vary a bit by following the Gleason Trail which finishes lower on the Bennett Street Trail.

Whatever your desire, or ability, the neighboring town of Sandwich has abundant outdoor excursions to bring you close to nature. Admire the peace and beauty, while breathing in the fresh mountain air on your New England camp vacation.

Playing Along the Scenic Kancamagus Highway T

he Kancamagus Highway is one of the most scenic roads in New England, and your gateway to a natural playland of pristine rivers, majestic waterfalls, breathtaking scenery and endless hiking. The “Kanc”, as it is referred to by locals, is a 34-mile long route between Conway and Lincoln, only 12 miles north of Chocorua Camping Village on Rt. 16. Go for a couple of hours or a whole day, but don’t miss this spectacular natural wonderland.

Start your “Kanc” adventure with a stop at the Saco Ranger Station, on your immediate right after turning onto the highway from Rt. 16. Rangers are on hand to answer your questions about everything from hiking and sightseeing to fishing and wildlife. Pick up brochures and maps here and you’ll be all set.

Some notable sights and stops along the way are listed below, with mileage starting at Saco Ranger Station.

• At 5.9 miles, Dugway Road leads to Conway via the Albany Covered Bridge. Stop here to see this historic bridge, and park for the Boulder Loop Trail.

This trail offers spectacular views on a moderately challenging 3-mile loop.

• At 6.6 miles, park for Lower Falls (fee parking area). This is nature’s own water park, with minirapids, flumes, rock slides and pools both deep and shallow. Kids and adults will have hours of fun here

on a hot day. (Water shoes are recommended, rocks are slippery.)

• At 8.3 miles, Rocky Gorge Scenic Area takes you down to the Swift River. The path leads you over a wooden footbridge with scenic views.

• At 11.4 miles, you will see the parking area for Champney Falls Trail. This is a fairly easy hike for all ages, 3 miles roundtrip to scenic waterfalls.

• At 11.7 miles, Bear Notch Road turns off to Bartlett (9 miles), winding through the forest and passing scenic overlooks.

• At 12.2 miles, park for the Passaconaway Historic Site and visitor center. Built in the early 1800’s, the site offers brochures detailing the history of the place and staff dressed in period costumes.

• At 14.8 miles you will find parking for Sabbaday Falls. A short walk (4/10ths of a mile) will bring you to a series of beautiful falls cascading through a rocky flume.

• At 16.8 miles, pull over for the scenic overlook, featuring views of Sugar Hill and other mountains to the east and south.

• At 18 miles, stop at Lily Pond and see if you can spot a moose by the pond.

• At 20.4 miles you will go over Kancamagus Pass, the highest point on the highway.

• At 20.8 miles, the scenic overlook features a view of Mt. Osceola.

• At 25.7 miles, park at the Otter Rocks rest area and cool off in the swimming hole. (Rest rooms here.)

• At 28.7 miles, stop at Lincoln Woods for river swimming and a walk across a long suspension footbridge.

• At 34.3 miles you will be at the White Mountain visitor center, and you will have completed a one-way tour of one of the most scenic areas in our country. If it’s early enough, continue on and check out some of the many attractions of the Lincoln/Franconia Notch area. If it’s getting late, head back to CCV, fire up the grill and relax around the campfire, reflecting on a day in Nature’s Playground!

Make your way to Wabanaki Lodge parking area, follow the pine needle trail to your right, and you’re on your way to peace and quiet. The long bridge will come up to you like a vision in a movie.

the early morning, deer can be observed nibbling on reeds. Blue Heron gather brush to nest in the afternoon light, while cranberries and wild iris flourish in the nutrient rich boggy water. A branch of the Chocorua River flows under the bridge, its current carrying trout and perch to Moore’s Pond as it ripples the vibrant watergrass like a mermaid’s mane.

Across the 3rd bridge, a favorite doggy swim hole, and diligent beaver dam construction site, bear to your left and enter the woods of River Run Trail. Like Dorothy following the Yellow Brick Road, the pine needle path will unveil a forest of mystery and abundance. You will be transformed into a believer as the sun rays dance through the maple leaves; ladyslippers unfold from the decay and the scent of balsam elicits a sigh. The fairies are dancing with the shadows, the gnomes are just around the bend saddling up the fox for a 20’ clock tea time rendezvous with Aunty Em and Toto.

The rest is up to you. Do you continue on River Run Trail to picnic at the table and take a dip in the sandy bottom swim spot, or venture up the way to berry on Knowles Hill. Just a bit beyond you’ll discover an amphibian habitat at the vernal pools of Moose Pond Trail or scoot, bounce and scale the varied remnants of the glacial playground on Boulder Hill. It’s your adventure. Pack a lunch and bring along a blueberry bucket for the 1 acre clearing on Hidden Valley Ridge Trail or bring a journal and a camera to create your very own fairy tale. You could spend the whole day exploring amongst the aspen, birch and fern!

Whichever route you choose, may the force of nature be with you, and may you meet the emerald pine city with the wonderment of a new world discovered.
