New York Intro New York City, is the most densly populated city in the USA. With an approximate population of 8,550,405 in 2015 this population is distributed over a land area of around 300 square miles. New York City exerts a significant impact upon the USAs economy through the famous Wall Street, and general commerce. Home to the headquarters of the UN, therefore being an important center for international diplomacy and has also been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.

One main contribution to New Yorks sucess is being placed on one of the world’s largest natural harbors. New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State.The five boroughs include Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island they where all consolidated into a single city in the 1890s. The city and its metropolitan area are the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States.

Brooklyn Bridge Brooklyn Bridge is the most renowned bridge in the state of New York conecting Brooklyn to Manhattan. The estimated total cost of the construction was $15 million dollars. It took fourteen years to build the Brooklyn Bridge and required the labor of over 600 men. The construction crosses the river by a single span of 1,595 feet suspended by four cables. The cables a re 15½ inches in diameter and each cable is composed of 5,434 parallel steel wires.

Attractions Empire state - The New york Skyline would be very different if there was no Empire state building. Taking 11 months to construct, the 1,454-foot-tall emblem became the city’s highest building once completed in 1931. Visitors are presentend with a stunning veiw of the New York city skyline.

Brooklyn Birdge - Contecting Brooklyn to Manhattan the suspention bridge is the most iconic bridge in the state of New York. By talking a walk acroos the bridge you are able to whitness first hand why this piece of architecture took 14 years to build. More info can be found on Pages 4-5 Central Park - With 843 acres of green surrounded by 20 story sky srapers it obvious why Central Park is one of the most filmed locations in the world, and attracts up to 40 million visitors per year. Therefore makin this a must see location.

The Statue of Liberty - A gift from the people of France to the United States this statue is said to be the first thing inwhich inmigrants will set there eyes on.

Made of copper the statue has gradualy turned green due to the oxidisation.

The attraction is most accesible by boat tour allowing visitors to step of and enjoy the veiw of this breathtaking sculpture.

Transportation Public transportation within the city is relatively inexpensive, convenient and efficient. The present fare for a subway or local bus ride is $2.75 with a MetroCard.

MetroCards can be used interchangeably on both subways and buses.

Taxi The taxicabs of New York City are widely recognized throughout the world due to there presents within movies and TV. They come in two varieties: yellow and green. Taxis painted yellow are able to pick up passengers anywhere in the five boroughs. Those painted green, which began to appear in late 2013, are allowed to pick up passengers in Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens. Both types have the same fare structure. Taxicabs are operated by private companies and licensed by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission.

The Subway New York’s underground subway system is the fastest mode of transport within the city. It is used daily by millions of New Yorker’s. While cabs and buses get stuck in traffic, subways almost always run faster and usually on time. Maps are clearly visible throughout the subway stations.

The train lines connect virtually all of the city’s major destinations. The subway runs twenty-four hours a day, three hundred sixty-five days a year therefore making it the best mode of transport through New York city and it even runs to brooklyn.

City Buses Bus routes cover all major areas of the city and, however they are not as fast as the subway system due to city traffic. They provide an inexpensive alternative and another great way for the visitor to get around the city.

Design New York’s large residential districts is often defined by the architecture within the city from the elegant brownstone rowhouses, townhouses, and tenements that were built during a period of rapid expansion from 1870 to 1930. And in contrast, New York City also has neighborhoods that are less densely populated and feature free-standing dwellings. In the outer boroughs, large single-family homes are common in various architectural styles such as Tudor Revival and Victorian. Split two-family homes are also widely available across the outer boroughs, especially in the Flushing area.

The 9/11 Memorial is located on the site of the former World Trade Center complex and covers about half of the 16-acre site. The Memorial features two large waterfalls and reflecting pools, each about an acre in size, set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers. The Memorial plaza is one of the most eco-friendly plazas ever constructed. Surrounded by more than 400 trees with the reflecting pools in the centre. Its design conveys a spirit of hope and renewal, and creates a contemplative space separate from the usual sights and sounds of New York City. The constant flow of water is said to represtent everlasting freedom.

Brooklyn Bridge Although the Brooklyn Bridge is technically a suspension bridge, it uses a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge design. The towers are built of limestone, granite, and Rosendale cement. The limestone was quarried locally at the Clark Quarry in Essex County, New York. The granite blocks were quarried and shaped on Vinalhaven Island, Maine, under a contract with the Bodwell Granite Company, and delivered from Maine to New York by schooner. The bridge was built with numerous passageways and compartments in its anchorages. New York City rented out the large vaults under the bridge’s Manhattan anchorage in order to fund the bridge. Opened in 1876, the vaults were used to store wine, as they were always at 16 °C. 11

Top Of The Rock The top of the rock is located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza it is an American Art Deco skyscraper that forms the centerpiece of Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, New York City. Previously called the RCA Building from 1930 to 1988, and later the GE Building from 1988 to 2015, It was renamed the Comcast Building on July 1, 2015, following the transfer of ownership to new owner Comcast. Its name is often shortened to Top of the Rock or 30 Rock. The building is most famous for housing the NBC television network headquarters. At 850 feet high, the 70-story building is the 14th tallest in New York City and the 39th tallest in the United States. It stands 400 feet shorter than the Empire State Building.

The building underwent a US$170 million floor-by-floor interior renovation in 2014.

The renovation included new Comcast signage atop the building; new ground-level signage that reads Comcast Building; and, for the first time, the display of the iconic NBC Peacock logo on the building’s exterior.

Museum of Modern Art The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is an art museum located in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

MoMA is most renowned for its development and collecting of modernist art, and is often identified as one of the largest and most influential museums of modern art in the world. MoMA’s collection offers an overview of modern and contemporary art, including works of architecture and design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books and artist’s books, film. The most reconisable piece within the museum at the time of my visit was The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh.

The MoMA Library includes approximately 300,000 books and exhibition catalogs, over 1,000 periodical titles, and over 40,000 files of ephemera about individual artists and groups. The archives holds primary source material related to the history of modern and contemporary art.

Artist Bio

I am a British freelance landscape photographer, based in Cambridgeshire.

At present I’m exploring my passion by visiting various countries, including France and America. I have the ability to capture the multiple different moods of nature whilst adding my own artistic touch. I am devoted to producing contemporary digital art which is pleasing to the eye.

My educational background has been somewhat formal; I began with photography as a hobby but decided to pursue it in more depth 2 years ago. I am currently in my last year of study at Cambridgeshire Regional College. I am now in the process of applying to University.

I use a mixture of telescopic and wide angle lenses to create different outcomes depending on the scenery or subject. I have a broad experience using Adobe Software such as Photoshop and Lightroom. I have had experience working with commercial business, taking stock images for use within catalogues as well as working with clients who require specific images that need to be tailored to their needs. Working primarily with digital photography has allowed myself to express multiple images using a variety of techniques for example I tend to use the long exposure technique due to the nature of the process the outcome varies greatly.
