JEAN BENECKE, ’n oudleerling van die Goudveld-Hoërskool, het pas een van die jongste mense nóg geword om in Suid-Afrika as kommersiële vlieënier te kwalifiseer. Dié talentvolle jong man het boonop al sy vakke met punte hoër as 80% geslaag en sy kursus met lof voltooi. Jean is 20 jaar oud en het in 2011 matriek aan die Goudveld-Hoër-

skool voltooi. Volgens Jean se ma, Yvonne , het Jean van kleins af net een droom gehad en dit was om ’n vlieënier te word. Noudat hy een van sy grootste ideale verwesenlik het, beplan hy om verder te studeer en eendag ’n vlieginstrukteur te word. Jean het reeds in gr. 11 met deeltydse vliegopleiding in Bloemfon-

tein begin en hy moes baie hard werk om in matriek al sy skoolvakke, asook sewe vliegvakke, te slaag. Hy was op skool ’n uitblinker en lid van die skool se verteenwoordigende leerlingraad. Jean is ook ’n baie goeie klavierspeler en was by die Goudveld-Hoërskool se musiekskool betrokke waar hy in twee musiekopvoerings betrokke was.

THE most coveted award in civil aviation, Gold Wings, was awarded to two Goldfielders, Brian Emmenis and Klaas Goudriaan, at a prestigious event at the Wanderers Club last week. The Annual Aero Club of South Africa Awards event is held to recognise and celebrate the achievements of aviators in all the various sections of aviation in South Africa. At the same award function special recognition for an airshow was awarded to the KZN Winter Air Tour which was accepted by Emmenis and Chris Briers. Emmenis and Goudriaan were the only Free Staters to be awarded at this prestigious event. Emmenis was honoured for his dedicated promotion of aviation in South Africa. This includes his commentating at air shows, not only in South Africa, but also the whole of Africa. “It is a great honour to receive the award for 30 years of dedication to the promotion of aviation in all sectors in South Africa, as well as for my achievements as an internationally-recognised air show commentator working on the world circuit,” says Emmenis. Goudriaan, a gliding legend, was awarded the Gold Wings for his life-long involvement and dedication, not only as a competi- tior but also as an ambassador to gliding in South Africa and abroad. Emmenis is currently organising an event on Durban’s main beach which will be on a par with the international Red Bull Air Shows which attract millions of

spectators annually. He said in March next year Capital Sounds, his international air show broadcasting unit, would be bringing five of the world’s top pilots to compete against the best pilots in South Africa.

HAAR voete is in Welkom vasgemessel en sy sal nooit op ’n ander plek kan bly nie. Só sê Trina Bezuidenhout, ’n pionier van Welkom wat in 1946 hier nes geskop en Saterdag haar 90ste verjaardag gevier het. Dié merkwaardige vrou het diep spore in die Vrystaatse Goudveld gelaat. Sy was veral vir haar blommerangskikkings en spyseniering bekend. Daarby was sy voorsitter van verskeie verenigings. Sy was in 1980 ook ’n stigterslid van die Goudveldse Blom-en-tuin-klub. Om geld vir die klub in te samel het sy die eerste blomsafari in Welkom gereël. Trina en haar man, Jan, het in 1946 hul intrek op die plaas The Prairie geneem. Jan het werk by ’n sekere De Villiers gekry. Hy moes klip by Helgaardkoppie naby Theunissen vir die bou van mynhostelle losskiet. Met sy aftrede was hy hoofskagsinker van Anglo American Corporation in die Goudveld. Trina, wat as die blommevrou van Welkom

bekend gestaan het, het haar liefde vir blomme by haar ma, Magdalena Botha, gekry. Magdalena het blomme in Krugersdorp verkoop. Sy het die “Poppy Lady” geheet. Trina was onder meer voorsitter van die VVLU en die plaaslike tak van die Suiderkruisfonds. Sy was ook by noodhulp betrokke en het vir 28 jaar in ’n plaaslike koor gesing. Dié koor het in 1985 saam met Manuel Escorcio op die Goudfees in Welkom opgetree. Trina het met haar rangskikkings ook oorsee naam gemaak. Sy het onder meer in Bath, Engeland, ’n tweede plek vir een van haar rangskikkings gekry. Haar talente hou egter nie by blommerangskikkings en spyseniering op nie. Sy het ook in houtsneewerk en koekversiering klas gegee. Daarby het sy verskeie vroue geleer hoe om lappoppe te maak. Op 90 loop sy sonder ’n kierie. Sy gebruik net ’n leesbril en sy is versot op sport. Van krieket en rugby kan jy haar niks vertel nie. Trina hou van gesonde kos.

Kaartkuiertjie week se hoogtepunt Marti Will “LEEF so voort, vriendinne, lede, dit is my wens aan julle almal.” Só sê tannie Elsje Odendaal, stigterslid van die Donderdag-kaartklub vir penioentrekkers. “Ná my uittrede as onderwyser aan die Laerskool St. Helena het ek my voorgeneem om nie by die huis te

gaan sit en niks doen nie, ook om nie te sit en wag vir wat mag gebeur nie. Ek het besluit om met al my pensioenvriendinne ’n get together te reël,” sê tannie Elsje. Die voorneme het ’n werklikheid geword en in 1992 het tannie Elsje ’n lekker Donderdag-kaartspeelbyeenkoms vir vroue gereël. Die klub het met tien lede by die Ro-

vers-sportklub in Welkom begin. “Ek was verheug oor die toestemming wat Rovers se bestuur ons gegee het om die geriewe vir ons weeklikse byeenkoms te gebruik waar ons geselligl saam kan kuier.” Tannie Elsje sê die weeklikse saamkuier voel soos ’n vakansiedag so in die middel van die week. “Dit is vir ons waardevol. Ons deel

mekaar se geluk, ongeluk, siektes en probleme, asook grootouers se liefde vir hul kleinkinders, en sterftes. behoort nog aan die klub en daar is boonop ’n waglys van ywerige Canasta-spelers op die kantlyn.” Lenie Booysen, een van die lede, beskryf haar Donderdag-afspraak as ’n lekker skinder-dinner party en ’n nuwe lid, Sophia Prinsloo, wat ’n beginner is, sê dit is vir haar baie lekker. Tewens, sê al die lede, dit is die hoogtepunt van hul week.

Officials show no loyalty T.M. NGESI (writing in my personal capacity), Matjhabeng: I WOULD like to register my disappointment at the manner in which Matjhabeng Municipality administrators waste the money of ratepayers (taxpayers) and at the same time have the audacity to place a full two page advertisement in the Vista (to justify their deed). Whilst we are not told as to how much ratepayers (taxpayers) have paid for their holiday in Durban, the municipal manager has the guts to tell us that funding was sourced from the National Government Training Fund. All South Africans know that South Africa

is one country and there is no justification to waste money simply because it came from the national fiscus. If the money was spent in Matjhabeng, just imagine how many local businesses could have benefitted. It is clear that we are run by officials who do not have any loyalty to our local economy. My conclusion is that the Durban trip was a vote catching exercise for the 2014 elections as there are no similarities between Matjhabeng and the Durban Metro. It is a pity that Matjhabeng officials feel justified to go on holiday using poor people’s money at the same time deny this poor people basic services.

IN the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, the Goldfields region of the Free State did not only produce gold but it shaped top track and field athletes and cyclists, with world-class facilities at mining houses like Harmony, Western Holdings and President Steyn. Offspring from the neighbouring mine villages (Skomplaas), were groomed to become athletes at an early age and were trained by capable and experienced mentors. Their planning was long term. Such products shone at their post-primary school institutions both here at home or at boarding schools. What prompted me to write this letter is the South African team that emerged from the recent International Armature Athletics Federation (IAAF) Championships held in Barcelona having registered a single bronze medal from Johan Cronje in the men’s 1 500 m recently. We have failed in the past to win medals at the World Championships, but the scarcity of South African athletes in finals and the failure of up-coming talent reinforces a deepening thought that South African athletics is fast becoming obscure in the global stage. This is an underachievement given our relative resource-wealth. Most sports, particularly the Olympic codes, fight the same battles. Every second year our performance result in the same acquisitions in Commonwealth Games and Olympics. A solution does not lie in the current spor-

ting underperformances, but it is in the present-day practices. This explains our 2013 World Champions solution will be a decade in the making. The problem regarding our sport as a nation is that we neglect athletes between the ages of 10 and 15. Like in the mining industry in the past, that is the generation that must be trained at proper facilities with relevant training outfit. Money is part of the game, but cannot be an answer to everything. That means today’s problems cannot be solved unless we change our thinking and attitude. We are the first to boast about big money sponsorships. That in itself is not an answer. Kenya and Jamaica are under-resourced but always win 10 medals each at major athletics events.

Murderer sentenced to 16 years in jail

Abel Moeketsi (21) will spend 16 years in prison after he had received a 19 years’ prison sentence of which 3 years were suspended for murdering a woman in Phomolong. Die polisie het onder meer op 18 messe, 3 handgemaakte pangas, knopkieries, 95 liter sorghumbier, ’n vervalste R100-noot, 22 voertuie, 43 beeste, verdowingsmiddels, 83 vervalste DVD’s en CD’s, ’n rekenaarstelsel en ’n DStv-dekodeerder beslag gelê.

Support annual Blood Bonanza Alet van der Walt THE Welkom Business Blood Bonanza aims to increase the awareness of blood donations ahead of the festive season. Last years’ Business Blood Bonanza, with 511 units donated, was a huge success and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) hopes to increase it to 550 units this year. This year the Welkom Business Blood Bonanza will be spread over the whole of November and businesses are welcome to make their dona-

tion at the SANBS at The Strip, Shop 36, Stateway, on the time and date that suits them. Businesses can also arrange for a bleed at their premises. The Blood Bonanza will ensure that the Goldfields and surrounding areas have enough blood during the festive season. Businesses, schools and other groups of five or more donors will receive a framed photo. Businesses can also help to sponsor items in the SANBS goodie bag. Regular lucky draws will be held du-

ring the November blood drive. Donors can support the minibleed on 29 November at MediClinic Welkom in the foyer from 10:00 to 16:00. Some interesting blood facts to remember are that a blood transfusion takes place every 35 seconds. A single blood donation can help up to three patients, because blood is separated into plasma, platelets and red cells. Altogether 26% of blood is used in gynaecological cases and 4% goes to trauma patients.

Die twee lede, Johrné van Huyssteen, ook lid van die bekende Afrikaanse groep Ddisselblom en nou omroeper op ’n radiostasie, en Pieter Venter, voorheen van Welkom, wil nie as ’n band bekend staan nie, maar verwys eerder na AfriKoesties as ’n projek. “Ons beplan om ook met bekende Afrikaanse kunstenaars saam te werk om hul musiek in ’n akoestiese weergawe ten toon te stel,” sê Johrné. Die gehoor kan uitsien na sommige van Ddisselblom se oorspronklike liedjies op kitaar, maar so ook na heelwat oorspronklike liedjies, elkeen wat ’n intieme storie vertel.

“Musiek van Afrikaanse legendes soos Lucas Maree lê ons ook na aan die hart,” sê Pieter. Die vertoning sal op Donderdag 14 November om 19:30 in Die Bekfluitjieteater in Welkom plaasvind. Kersopvoering trek ’n ander baadjie aan DIE Kersopvoering Krismis in Afrika met Belia Lourens en Frans van Rensburg word Saterdag in Welkom in die NG Moedergemeente se kerkgebou opgevoer. Belia is ’n professionele sanger en Frans is ’n professionele dramaturg met ’n doktorsgraad. Van Rensburg het gedeeltes uit Mattheus in Tsotsi-Afrikaans oorgeskryf en daarmee saam ook 60 Jesus-gedigte geskryf. Die verhoogstuk Krismis in Afrika is spesiaal vir die einde van ’n jaar uit die toepaslike ge-

deeltes van die Tsotsi-evangelie aangepas om aan die tradisionele Kerssangdiens ’n kreatiewe benadering vir die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks te gee. Die opvoering in Welkom is deel van ’n landwye toer. Thusanang needs help to keep caring for the disabled Alet van der Walt

SIX years ago the Thusanang Day-care Centre for the disabled in Ventersburg was launched as a community project to cater for the mentally and physically disabled. Thusanang also provides educational pro-

grammes to the community on HIV/Aids and the dangers of drug abuse. Although there is only space for 12 patients at the care facility, the project caters for 27 patients. The centre only consists of a shack and an outhouse – these are not suitable for the dis-

abled. At the start of October a Dutch volunteer group known as the SA Volunteers, with the support of some local businesses, donated five wheelchairs and some food parcels to Thusanang. The centre only receives minimal support

from government and is still in desperate need of more donations to build a proper day-care centre as well as a classroom for educational purposes. Members of the public who want to support the project can call Michael Bester on 073-2273801 or send an email to md@mangaza.co.za.

TWO very old animals have been rescued by Claws and are in desperate need of loving homes to retire to. The sevenyearold Border Collie was dropped off by its owner, without any food or even a donation. “I am good with other pets and people. I need a home where I can retire. I am free to a good preapproved home.“ The very old sterilised female dog was found on a sand road between Virginia and Welkom, she doesn’t belong to any of the farmers in the area. ’n AFDAK en plaveisel van sowat R237 000 is by die Baitedi-sentrum vir gestremdes in Kgotsong naby Bultfontein opgerig. Dié verbeterings is deur die Ontwikkelingstigting van Eskom moontlik gemaak. Die sentrum het in 1991 tot stand gekom en sien na sowat 20 gestremdes om. Dit sluit in dowes, blindes, liggaamlik en verstandelik gestremde mense en mense wat aan epilepsie ly. Die gestremdes word opgelei om selfstandig te word en na hul eie behoeftes om te sien. Hulle maak onder meer klere, gordyne, skoene, tafeldoeke, petroleumjellie en vloerpolitoer. Baitedi het ses naai- en ses omkapmasjiene waarmee die gestremdes kan werk. Daar is ’n groentetuin wat gedy en heelwat vrugtebome. Water word in tenks opgevang en

groente word in ’n tonnel geplant. Een van die probleme waarmee die gestremdes ondervind, is dat hulle sukkel om ’n behoorlike mark vir hul produkte te kry. Die sentrum het ook ’n rekenaarsentrum waar onder meer CV’s getik en druk- en lamineerwerk gedoen word. Daar is nege rekenaars. Eskom het in Maart geld bewillig om die verbeterings aan te bring. Voertuie kan onder meer onder die afdak geparkeer word, terwyl die gestremdes in die somer daar in die koelte kan sit. Die mense wat daagliks na die sentrum gaan, bly in Kgotsong. Vir sy uitstekende spel is hy met vyf van die ses belangrikste eerbewyse vereer. Hy is onder meer as die rugbyspeler van die jaar, asook die beste agterspeler aangewys. Japie het die afgelope seisoen tien drieë gedruk. Danie van der Merwe is onder meer vereer as die Vodacom-voorspeler van die jaar, Chris Ehlers as die Curriebeker-voorspeler van die jaar en Inus Kritzinger as die Curriebeker-agterspeler van die jaar. Werner Griesel het vanjaar sy 100ste wedstryd vir die Griffons gespeel. Oersond Gorgonzola het op die geselligheid gesê die Griffons het vanjaar nie al hul doelwitte bereik nie. Beserings het die span gekniehalter. “Dit was deel van ’n leerproses en ons sal al die probleme probeer uitstryk.”

Tuis in water JAPIE NEL (regs) wat vyf van die belangrikste eerbewyse ontvang het op die jaarlikse prysuitdeling van die Griffonsrugbyunie in Welkom.
