Couple bury son ‘twice’ Quality check apparently reason for wrong body given to parents Marti Will mwill@volksblad.com
The unthinkable happened to a young Kutlwanong couple when they had to bury their deceased new-born son, not once, but twice. Agnes Ncaphayi (19) and Daniel Chavango (23) have sought legal counsel after the emotional pain and trauma they had to suffer when the wrong baby was given to them to bury. They are suing the hospital
concerned for delictual fault. Their son died on 3 September, a day after he was born in the Thusanong Hospital in Odendaalsrus. A hospital official handed the body to a funeral undertaker, and the bereaved parents buried their son on 5 September. In mourning, and her son’s death still being a raw emotion, Agnes was told to be at the hospital on Wednesday, 19 September. She was then informed that her dead baby
was still in the hospital’s mortuary, and that she had been given the wrong baby to bury. She immediately phoned Daniel and gave him the inconceivable news. “It was a big shock. We are both very traumatised. We have lost our son twice. It is very cruel,” Daniel told Vista. Daniel, for the second time in less than a month, went to buy a tiny coffin. But the trauma was not yet at an end. The couple was only
given the body the following day (20/09), as the family of the child they had buried on 5 September had to be informed of the sequence of events. Daniel and Agnes buried their son that same day. “Agnes and I are stunned. It is difficult to process what has happened. We believed that our baby was buried. “We are in mourning and then we had to hear that our baby’s body was still in the mortuary. It was a big shock to see his little body lying there,”
says Daniel. Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Health, says the incident is regrettable and unfortunate. “We are aware that this is a quality check problem, and as a department we do not want to apportion blame on either of the affected parties,” says Mvambi. He says an internal hearing will be held and measures will be put in place to ensure that this error does not recur.
