Die fotograaf van Virginia wat in hegtenis geneem is op aanklag van seksuele teistering, verkragting, seksuele aanranding, die besit van pornografie en die besit en vervaardiging van kinderpornografie en intimidasie is Dinsdag (21/08) op borgtog van R5 000 vrygelaat. Jaco Roets (38) is op 26 Julie in hegtenis geneem nadat dit aan die lig gekom het dat hy ’n minderjarige kind van die dorp geteister en geïntimideer het. Roets se prokureur, Matt Willemse, van Haasbroek-Willemse-prokureurs, het aangevoer dat die staat nie genoegsame bewyse kon lewer om Roets borgtog te weier nie. “Hy woon by en versorg ook sy bejaarde ouers. Daarby is sy pa baie sieklik en hy het Roets se ondersteuning nodig,” het Willemse aangevoer. Roets staan nou op 12 verskillende aanklagte tereg, asook vir die besit van ’n onwettige vuurwapen en die intimidasie van slagoffers met ’n onwettige vuurwapen. Roets was voorheen getroud, maar is geskei en het geen kinders nie. Hy woon by sy bejaarde ouers in Virginia. Hy is volgens Willemse die hoofversorger vir sy bejaarde ouers en is dus nie ’n vlugrisiko nie. Landdros Ashley Pillay het klem daarop gelê dat daar in Roets se geval nie juis buitengewone omstandighede is sodat hy borgtog geweier kan word nie. Hy het ook die benadruk dat die borgtogaansoek ook glad nie die fisieke hofsaak is nie. Pillay het Roets gewaarsku om streng by sy borgtogvoorwaardes te hou om te voorkom dat hy nie dadelik weer in gehegtenis geneem word nie. Roets sal weer op Dinsdag 25 September in die landdroshof in Virginia verskyn.

The police in Thabong are looking for more than ten suspects who were involved in an armed robbery at the Tosa College in the early hours of Tuesday (21/08) morning. The suspects stole more than 50 computer towers with an estimated value of R400 000 and two two-way security radios. Media coverage shocks Chopo Teleki, Jan Celliers Park, Welkom: I was disappointed to realise that the registrar of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) encourages and promotes adultery in the name of the Constitution (Act 104 of 1996). This came to the fore after I lodged a complaint that the television programme 7de Laan is explicitly showing adultery and harlotry. The BCCSA defended this by referring to the Constitution. To my view, the provisions of section 16 were interpreted wrongly. For instance, section 16(1)(c) of the Constitution provides that everyone has the right to freedom of expression, which includes the freedom of artistic creativity. I do not see that people have the right to publicly display adultery. Nothing in the above-mentioned section alludes to adultery. Secondly, adultery is incompatible with section 16(2)(b) in that it could result in violence and divorce. My assertion is proven on the balance of reasons and probabilities, while the South African courts have proven this on reasonable doubt. How many women have poured boiling water on their lovers or husbands because of adultery? How many men have killed their lovers or wives because of adultery? Is the registrar of the BCCSA not satisfied that our beloved country has been messed up in the name of the Constitution enough? Another woman shocked me on Women’s Day (9 August). This person was being interviewed by Mmasechaba Motolo on SAfm around 10:00. The woman vehemently defended the

selling of sex by women, and she referred to the women who do this as sex workers. I was shocked to the marrow to hear an adult saying that. Since I was accompanied by my grandchildren, I had no choice but to switch off the radio. I could not understand why the person – a woman for that matter – was not talking about the industrial revolution instead. That is something that could afford every woman the opportunity to earn a leaving. Likewise, the woman encouraged and promoted prostitution in the name of the Constitution. Does she want all the children in South Africa to be prostitutes? Prostitution, which she encouraged on national radio, is not in line with the provisions of sections 24(a) of our Constitution. This section says that every person has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being. However, the moment a person is in a sexual relationship with a prostitute, both find themselves in an environment that is harmful to their health, seeing that they may contract HIV and AIDS. In addition to this, a prostitute contravenes section 14 of the Constitution in that she exposes herself to everyone and anybody. To crown it all, prostitution infringes on the right to human dignity and respect (cf. section 10 of the Constitution).

Hospice benefits from golf day: The annual Flamingo Rotary/ Goldfields Hospice golf day was held for the 29th time on Thursday, 9 August, at the Oppenheimer Park Golf Club. “Once again this proved to be a successful day, which was well supported by local businesses and players. Funds were raised for Goldfields Hospice to be able to continue their free service in the Goldfields. We strive to improve quality in life, dignity in death and support in bereavement to all those suffering from cancer and other terminal illnesses. It is only through the generosity of people that we are able to continue to provide a valuable service to the patients in our own communities,” said Marli Young (general manager of Hospice). game-format quiz has challenging perspectives on the curriculum and related topics. The project competition will be open for free public viewing

Show a nostalgic journey The Matjhabeng Publicity Association is proud to present the Bloemfontein Philharmonic Orchestra with Thank you for the Music – an ABBA Tribute. The show will be held at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre on 15 September at 19:00. Featuring the soloists Kyle Seconna, Juju Domingo, Corneil Müller and Helene Henn, and conducted by Paul van Zuilenburg, the orchestra will take the audience on a nostalgic journey through the Swedish group’s music that changed the international music landscape of the 1970s and 1980s. People can look forward to hits like “Mamma Mia”, “Money Money Money”, “Super Trooper”, “Knowing me, Knowing you” and “The winner takes it all”. Ben van Wyk’s artworks will be showcased at the exhibition. He is from Parys.

Artworks come alive at exhibition To mark the opening of this year’s Artbeat of Central South Africa exhibition, a cocktail function will be held in the Ferdie Mayer Hall in Welkom on Monday, 3 September. The event will start at 19:00. The theme of the cocktail function is “Gatsby”, and five artworks will be auctioned off for charity during the function. The exhibition will last until Saturday, 8 September.

According to Mari Strydom, organiser of the event, Henna artists will be at the exhibition every day to make women a living part of their art. Launched in Welkom three years ago, the Artbeat exhibition had humble beginnings. It initially gave artists from the Goldfields a platform to exhibit their work, but before long artists from all over South Africa heard about the exhibition.

Since then, artists have vied for a place at this ever-growing event. Top artists’ work from all over South Africa will therefore be seen at the exhibition. Roads closed for night race

The map for the 5 km route of this year’s Mediclinic Vista Eskom Athletic Club Free State Night Race.

The map for the 10 km route of this year’s Mediclinic Vista Eskom Athletic Club Free State Night Race.

On Friday (24/08) the annual Mediclinic Vista Eskom Athletic Club Free State Night Race will take place. Motorists are requested to use alternative routes from Thursday (23/08) due to the closure of roads. Closure will be done as follows: ) Section 1 will be closed from Thursday at 18:00 until Friday at 23:00. This affects Meulen Street from the corner of Petrus Bosch Street towards Lategan Street, and the front of the main gate at Mediclinic. ) Section 2 will be closed on Friday from 11:00 until 23:00. This involves Lategan Street (both sides of the street) from

the emergency entrance of Mediclinic towards Tempest Road. The St. Helena Hospital circle will be closed. ) Section 3 will be closed on Friday from 11:00 until 23:00. This affects Unicorn Road (both sides of the road) from the Lategan Street corner towards Doornberg Street. Also, Kok Street leading into Unicorn Road will be closed. ) Section 4 will be closed on Friday from 15:00 until 23:00. The Welkom High School and the Riebeeckstad High School will be challenging each other at this year’s race, and they challenge all the schools in the Goldfields to also participate in the race. On Friday (17/08) the Department of Labour in the Free State held the National Day Against Child Labour at the Frikkie Cronje Stadium in Wesselsbron. The department invited 400 children aged between 10 and 14 years from villages and farm schools around Wesselsbron to attend the day. The children were informed of their rights and responsibilities as children in a labour environment.

The theme of this year’s event was “Let me be the child”. This theme was derived from the child’s right to education, playing and doing the things children must do to enhance their mental, physical and emotional well-being. The children were treated to meals and goodie bags. Entertainment ranging from drama to dance, poetry and singing formed part of the programme. Albany Bakery sponsored food parcels, beanies and T-shirts for all of the participants in the day’s programme.

Semoné Rademeyer (18), ’n gr. 12-leerling aan die Goudveld-Hoërskool, is gekies as Vista se SuperSport Let’s Play Sportster van die Maand vir Julie vir haar prestasie in hokkie. Semoné het vyf jaar agtereenvolgens die provinsiale span gehaal en sy speel reeds vier jaar vir die Goudveld-Hoërskool se eerste hokkiespan. Sy is ook een van die onderkapteins van haar skoolspan. Semoné het drie jaar agtereenvolgens die skool se trofee as die beste hokkiespeler in haar ouderdomskategorie ontvang, asook ’n trofee vir die beste vordering in haar ouderdomskategorie. Sy is ook as ’n topdeelnemer aan die Elsie Coetzer Hokkieskool (ECHS) se hokkiekliniek en -toernooi aangewys.

Semoné is deel van die span wat van 30 September tot 11 Oktober ’n gespesialiseerde hokkietoer na Duitsland en Nederland sal onderneem. Sy het groot drome om eendag professioneel hokkie te speel, en om internasionaal en plaaslik af te rig. Meer oor Let’s Play SuperSport het opgemerk dat die ontwikkeling van kinders gestrem word omdat vaardighede wat geleer word deur speel, liggaamlike opvoeding en sport ontbreek. Die Let’s Play-projek is in November 2005 gestig om speel, fisieke aktiwiteit en sport in skole aan te moedig. Night race held The Harmony Striders Virginia will be hosting its annual Makiti Night Race on Friday, 31 August. The Goldfields recently sparked with excitement during the International Federation of Model Auto Racing (IFMAR) World Championship. This event took place from 11 to 19 August at the newly built Welkom Radio-controlled

Car (RC) Arena. Racers of radio-controlled cars from South Africa and around the world took part in this event, which was hosted in Welkom for the first time. The last time such a world championship was held in South Africa, was in 2002. The event commenced with several races and the final

race took place on Sunday (19/08). Visitors and supporters were entertained with exciting races throughout the week. The dream of Antonio Caroli, owner of the arena, came true when they started construction on this world-class race track, which is situated on the corner of Neser and Newby Street in

Dagbreek, Welkom, in July 2017. Caroli, who is a fanatical RC racer, held the official world warm-up race at the end of April this year. “This is an amazing worldclass facility, with an absolutely brilliant layout and 23 second laps are every racer’s dream,” says Ronald Volker,

reigning 1:10 RC world champion. This year’s title was won by Bruno Coelho from Portugal. The on-road gas nationals will take place on 6 and 7 October, and the off-road nationals will be held on 13 and 14 October at the Welkom RC Arena. No entry fee will be charged.
