PUPILS from 22 schools competed at the Welkom Regional Eskom Expo for Young Scientists held at CUT Welkom over the past weekend. The expo aims to encourage learners to explore science and get them interested in careers in scientific fields. The competition had three components: the physical science quiz, two building competitions for a team of five gr. 6-11 learners and scientific research projects done by individuals or a team of two scholars. The physical sciences quiz involved 14 teams of two members each who were kept busy with various activities for three hours, which tested their knowledge to the utmost, with quiz master Adele Smit and Mandy de Vries as record keeper. The competition was tough, with Mafanti Mpho and Skalk Tlodiso from Lephola winning the challenge. The second place went to the team of Kgosimore Lesego and Macamo Malehlohonolo from Teto High, with Kobus Matthee and Tumi Sefo from St Andrew’s taking third place. All of these learners went home with a neat cash prize each, compliments of Eskom. Building competitions involved 27 teams from nine different schools. Teams had to construct towers and kites with specific resources given in a limited time. The award for the highest tower with the best construction went to Mohobo Primary School. Second place went to GoudveldHoërskool, with Hanipark Primary School taking third place. The award for the kite with the best design went to Mohobo Primary School. Second and third place went to different teams from Hanipark Primary School. Altogether 146 research projects were entered in 24 categories, with levels for gr. 5-7, gr. 8-9 and gr. 10-12. A total of 45 judges used the national rubric to evaluate each project in terms of scientific standards, creativity, written work and the oral presentation. For the first time, 15 junior projects from gr. 1-3 learners were presented at the Eskom Expo. The day ended with the prize-giving of the research projects as the climax. Priscilla Moodley (International Science Fair Director) and Junior Bancram (WHS) were the guest speakers. A total of 36 projects received bronze medals, 24 received silver medals and five were awarded gold medals. The award for the best Eskom project done by a female participant went to Bianka Reyneke (Gimnasium) for her project titled I found the link. The Eskom best energy project was awarded to Wesley Delport (Gimnasium) for Hydro-powered. The best Eskom development project was done by Katleho Tsotsotso (Gimnasium) for Forensics: How does it matter? Gold medals were received by Bianka Reyneke, Wesley Delport, Katleho Tsotsotso (Gimnasium) and Jako Briel and Kaylim Harker (St Andrew’s) A team of 11 projects consisting of 13 learners will compete at the International Eskom Expo for Young Scientists from 4 to 7 October, at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Johannesburg. The delegation leader will be Mr Org Prinsloo (Sentrale Volkskool, Kroonstad).
