We made it to issue 2!

Initially I was hesitant to continue this zine but seeing the reaction and support, I knew I had to try and make another one. I would say it is new and definitely improved.

Even with classes starting, I have so much excess creative energy I need to get out. I still have so much music I want to share and this seems to be one of the best ways to do so. This zine FOUNDER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF + DESIGNER isn’t meant to go on forever but I’m hoping to get to at least 4-5 issues to make up a volume. Then once I accomplish that, there may be a possibility that I print out a physical copies of the entire first volume! Thanks for the constant support my dudes. Hope you enjoy.

Interpretation 1: It's an early morning in spring, you run off the dock and jump into the clear glassy lake. You're floating on your back staring at sun until you see spots. You dive underwater and start swimming with colorful fish. When it's time to get out, you grab your towel and walk back towards the cabin.

Interpretation 2: Colorful lights flicker and the space fills with your laughter.

You’re dancing with someone you love and no one else is in the room. It’s just fun and time moves slowly.

Interpretation 1: You are driving along the coast in your jeep with the top off.

You have flashbacks of when your ex was in the passenger seat next to you, hand on your leg, hair blowing, laughter. You reminisce on these good times and get sad. The sun starts to set and you find content in the sun's rays through the clouds. You drive home.

Interpretation 2: It’s a blast to the past, and I’m driving along the backroads of my hometown with my closest friend. The fall air is crisp, and the leaves have started changing colors. My windows are down, and we’re headed to our high school’s football game to celebrate the end of a long week.

Interpretation 1: He’s going through a car wash; the colorful soaps smear and swirl on his windows. He knows that no one can see him, so he starts grooving. Cracking up at himself, he sings and dances without inhibition. This is wholesome happiness.

Interpretation 2: Dancing on the dance floor. Cute witty bantering back and forth with your partner.

People start to form a circle around the both of you, loving your moves.

L CAESAR Daniel Caesar, with his ever-so-smooth and silky vocals, burst onto the music scene this year partnering with Kali Uchis on the track “Get You.” With the help of Soundcloud reposts and Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlists, the song gained traction in no time.

Though he’s had several single

releases in the past as well as a short record entitled “Pilgrim’s Paradise” in 2015, Caesar hadn’t released a full-length EP until this year. Featuring collaborations with female powerhouses and a renown choral collective, his debut Freudian sets itself apart from the rest with instrumentation that takes you to church, lyrics to make you swoon, and vocals that sound like pure honey.

The instrumentation throughout Freudian is unique as Caesar and his fellow producers, Matthew Burnett and Jordan Evans, meld together a plethora of live instruments with refined postproduction effects and amps. In the first ten seconds of “Hold Me Down,” they insert static distortion and distant vocal samples. This segment is followed by crisp electric guitar plucking and lines in the verses are broken up by short riffs from the guitar and synth sequences.

Other tracks on the record employ a very gospel-like style of instrumentation, which is most evident in the track “We Find Love” and pays homage to the gospel tradition he grew from in Toronto. The song starts with a

gospel piano progression, made especially reminiscent of Sunday mornings in church with the soulful sound of crushed notes.

Caesar transitions between his deep chest voice and fluttery falsetto, backed by the angelic voices of the gospel collective CaDaRo Tribe. In the bridge, he alters the lyrics to Amazing Grace and sings, “what once was lost cannot be found.” This is followed by a repetitive section where Caesar and the women of CaDaRo sing the same lyrics until the end of the song broken only for a few seconds where his isolated vocal sings, “heaven help us.”

This skillful and symbolic instrumentation is apparent in every track on the record and the style of each track is slightly adapted for collaborations with other noteworthy vocalists such as Kali Uchis, H.E.R., Syd, and Charlotte Day Wilson.

Daniel Caesar’s ear for instrumentation, gift of songwriting, and attention to coherence shines through in every note and phrase of Freudian. The LP as a whole exudes effortless grace in every aspect, and will no doubt become the soundtrack to his three million listeners’ warm Sunday mornings.

R AT I N G S U M M ARY Production: Caesar and producers Matthew Burnett and Jordan Evans share a specialized ear for instrumentation and production that elevated Caesar’s lyrics to another level. The use of organs, tambourines, and a gospel choir in certain tracks versus the use of simple synths in others made this record stand out.

Lyrics: The lyrics of Freudian range in sophistication from song to song. In tracks like “We Find Love,” Caesar’s use of symbolism and allusions to Christian anthems is noteworthy. However, in other tracks like “Best Part,” he and his cowriters do fall to the repetitive and somewhat predictable nature of love songs.

As the star of his EP, Pilgrim’s Paradise, this track shows off Daniel’s guitar skills. From this song on, it is clear to see the stage he is setting in with his music.

The first version was even written when he was in still in high school.

violet The single has a strong beat that starts it off. With only one verse and the chorus, it is short but powerful.

The entire vibe of the song is ambient but with a distinct groove without being too overwhelming.

we find love

Somehow Daniel Caesar’s voice overrides any cliche’s in his lyrics. Such a simple message in this song that is in any typical love song but the way he carries it out is truly something special.

Travis always knows how to put on a hype show. At such a large and crowded venue, it is always a struggle to try and see the main headliner act at the end of the night. I really appreciate his stage setup on the bird because you can see him perform from the back.

My favorite set out of all three nights was Majid Jordan by far.

The visuals that orchestrate the perfect environment, paired with Majid’s raw vocals, and Jordan’s masterful live beats made for a flawless set.

On another note, it was Jordan’s birthday so that made the set all the more special.

Even with the technical issues in the beginning, Leven pushed through and played a band-only version for a few of his songs. Great stage presence and even greater vocals.

All of his hype songs are cut short but the more gospellike tracks are extended.

Chance always delivers in vocals and verses without being too flashy.

Going into his set, I honestly did not know many of his songs besides his hit, “Girls” with Chance. Joey had a ton of energy and got the crowd jumping along even though it was blazing hot. His performance was just so wholehearted and full of energy.

Kung Fu Kenny never disappoints. His performance was flawless, as is expected from the GOAT. He knew how to appeal to the old fans and the new. The visuals had great storytelling as well. It was an amazing set that ended a great festival.
