Certain biotech and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes require sterile spaces, and those spaces are complex and expensive. Enter Azzur Group’s Cleanrooms on Demand, which offers cleanrooms and regulation storage space to biotechnology and biopharmaceutical companies for clinical manufacturing. One of its newest facilities opened in Vista in April 2021, and the company is enjoying the benefits of its location “in the heart of the San Diego biotech community,” according to Dan Dernbach, Azzur Cleanrooms on Demand Senior Vice President of Global Operations. Azzur Cleanrooms on Demand has a broad range of clients, and each client receives customized support based on their specific needs, says Dernbach. “These could be small companies with only a few drug candidates in the pipeline who are just starting clinical manufacturing, all the way to some of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the industry.” What’s unique about Azzur Cleanrooms on Demand is that it allows clients to use their own staff without the need for facility ownership. Often, lack of manufacturing infrastructure and compliance expertise can be a major hurdle. Azzur Cleanrooms on Demand helps clients overcome that hurdle. Says Dernbach, “We bring both space and a high level of support services to our partners to enable their manufacturing.” In addition, the cleanroom service is “not purely leasing of space,” Dernbach says. “Our clients are our partners.… We work collaboratively with them to support them throughout their time in our facility…. The dedicated service is ultimately the support and expertise we provide. Our goal is to allow our partners to focus solely on the manufacturing and not have to worry about supporting the facility.” Included with the cleanroom are security/access control, pest control, cleaning, environmental monitoring, waste management, and basic cleanroom equipment. Compared to similar services, the Vista location offers reduced waiting times. With traditional models, says Dernbach, “customers are waiting upward of 18 months for space, [but] we can, in many cases, have our clients producing within 3 months.”

Since opening in Vista, the community has been very supportive. “We have had a good working experience with the city,… and the Vista Economic Development Group has also been a great resource to us,” says Dernbach. And, he notes, “even the Deputy Mayor came and spoke at our ribbon-cutting ceremony.” The Vista location allows Azzur Cleanrooms on Demand to be close to clients throughout San Diego County, but also within reach of Orange County. Additionally, Dernbach states, “Vista has been working diligently to attract more companies to the area, allowing more opportunities for us to expand our business with new potential partners.” Azzur Cleanrooms on Demand also supports the local community. Its services give Azzur clients a reason to start operations in the region. Says Dernbach, “these clients and Azzur are bringing quality jobs to the area. We are hiring scientists, engineers, and a host of other positions for Vista, which adds to the local economy.” With the business growth in Vista comes the need for services to support these various new companies. We will retain our motto as a district that strives for excellence and innivation in all that we do. The framework contains three new components: our vision, a set of portraits, and our values. We will be focusing our efforts throughout the year operationalizing our new framework for the future so that all students have the opportunity to learn and grow in the most dynamic, relevant, and supportive educational environment possible. A “vision” is a bold leap into the future, painting a vivid picture of a destination - a “north star” that guides collective action and shapes the strategies to make it a reality. A vision is long range (10-15 years), helping us step outside the present and reimagine the possibilities of the future. Organizational changes take time, and longer time frames encourage us to be proactive and to anticipate and plan for changes.
