Blossoming Fiesta

THIS time of year people from all over Spain and even further afield come to see the almond blossom across the Costa Blanca.

One of the best areas to see this is Alcalali and the town has once again organised plenty of activities for any visitors who come to the area.

From 3 February to 25 February there is a tapas route, where each establishment taking part will offer at least one tapa containing almonds.

February see’s an Almond Cake Competition at midday while before that there is a 10am start for a family guided walk from Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

10 February has street theatre with “The strange case of Mr Almond” playing in Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

The following Saturday (17 February) has another family walk as well as cookery demonstrations and a workshop on traditional basket weaving. 24 February sees the Local Products Fair at 11am followed by a musical parade; the final

day of events is Sunday 25 February.

THOSE people who booked their holidays for the first half of January would certainly have seen a contrast from visitors who came over here this week. While early January saw record temperatures in the high 20’s in parts of the region, even on the coast over the last few days the thermometer plunged to single digits.

Combined with thunderstorms, heavy rain and gale force winds it was more like being back in the UK – although things seemed to have settled back down again now with sunny days and cooler nights.

Last week was also Burns Night and the many expat Scots who live in these parts would have had a traditional supper to celebrate – and dare we say some Scottish weather to go with it. Burns Night passes the Spaniards by for obvious reasons, while the next big celebration over here is Carnival Week in February, one for the children and young at heart, with dressing up being the order of the day. If you go in your local Chinese bazaar and notice an aisle set aside just for costumes then Carnival is fast approaching.

Many local expat societies have obviously also bypassed this as well and it’s good to see that regular society lunches out and even wine tastings are right back on track so soon into the new year. Always best to get straight back on that horse!

In the Spanish news, King Felipe celebrated his 50th birthday on Tuesday and handed over a symbolic reminder that his daughter, Leonora will one day sit on the throne – even if she has a baby brother at some stage in the future. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened in the UK if Kate and William’s first born had been little Charlotte - although, back in 2011 it was annouced that sons and daughters of any future UK monarch will have equal right to the throne, after Commonwealth leaders agreed to change succession laws.

Benidorm Series 10

This year the show celebrates 10 years, having first arrived on our TV screens on 1 February 2007. The show follows the lives of Brits at the allinclusive The Solana hotel, with hotel staff regular providing comedy gold throughout.

Sherrie Hewson, Jake Canuso and Shane Richie were among the stars that

were out celebrating the 10th birthday of Benidorm at a special celebration event on the 29th January on a chilly night at the Mayfair Curzon in London.

Shane Richie happily shared a picture on Twitter with him pouting with two drag queens however John Chalice seemed to be a bit more surprised.

The new series will also see Shane Richie reprising his role as lively entertainer

Sammy Valentino in four episodes, and John Challis becoming a series regular with his character Monty Staines.

Meanwhile guest stars in Series 10 include The Chuckle Brothers, Nigel Havers, Mark Heap, Bobby Ball, Claire Sweeney, Layton Williams, Carol Decker, Tony Hadley and Holly Johnson.

The show has recently been adapted for the stage (Benidorm Live) and audiences in the USA with writes busy adapting the original scripts by Derren Litten. We are still waiting for confirmation from ITV for the official air date of series 10, the show is due to air late February and with the show previously being broadcast on Wednesday we expect it to land on our TV screens on the 21st or 28th February 2018, However, if you can’t wait that

long, you can always you can get your fix by bingewatching series 1-9, which are all showing on Netflix.

Additionally, ITV is marking the decade anniversary with a special one-off documentary called 10 Years On Holiday. The show’s creator and writer Derren Litten guides viewers around Benidorm to reveal all about how the show was created whilst visiting the show’s many real life locations. Cast (past and present) will talk about their roles on the show alongside show bloopers and exclusive behind the scenes footage of the 10th series being filmed.

All the Garvey family return for the one off special - Steve Pemberton, Siobhan Finneran, Sheila Reid, Ollie Stokes and Hannah Hobley talk about their time on the show.

Franco Cross controversy

THERE have been protests by supporters of the former Franco regime at the removal of a cross in Callosa de Segura.

This was erected in 1940 to commemorate local Falangists who lost their lives in the Spanish Civil War. The structure fell foul of the Historical Memory Law which aims to remove all fascist memorials as well as ensuring that things such as streets and towns named after Franco supporters are altered.

The cross has been under order to be removed for a while and last

weekend dozens of people turned out to protest the move. However, the structure was taken away in the early hours of the morning, although some protestors were still on site, two of whom have been detained. There was also a similar sized group turning out who supported the removal and some scuffles were reported as well as the throwing of firecrackers.

Specsavers raises over €6,000 for deaf-blind people Lost and

THE Specsavers optical group last week presented a cheque for €6,107.30 to the ONCE Foundation for the Deaf and Blind. The Fundacion ONCE para la Atencion de Personas con Sordoceguera (FOAPS) was formed in 2007 and develops programmes for deaf-blind people in Spain.

Specsavers will be used for interpretation and assistance, over 400 hours in all. The campaign was run by the firm in the second half of last year and also raised the awareness of the issues and the FOAPS itself, particularly among the expatriate community.

Eurovision marathon ON a live programme that overran until 1.30am, “Tu cancion” by Alfred y Amaia has been selected to represent Spain in the Eurovision song contest this year. The event enjoys a massive following here and at the time of the gala

The on-line audience particularly took to the battle between the eventual winners and Aitana, who

finished as the runnerup. However the whole event had a raised profile this year as the finalists were contestants from “Operacion Triunfo” an X-factor type talent show.

The final decision was once again made by viewer’s

votes with the eventual winner registering 43% of the total.

The Eurovision Song Contest final will be held in Iberian neighbours Portugal for the first time on 12 May. Before that there are two semi-finals on 8 and 10 May.

THE lost property office at trainstations seems like a throwback to the Britain of another age. However, even in Spain these still exist, albeit in a more virtual form than before. The Denia to Alicante TRAM network had just under 1,500 items of lost property handed in by staff and honest travellers last year, around four a day.

The most common misplaced items were wallets, purses, keys, rucksacks, glasses, umbrellas, bags, umbrellas and mobile phones – so apart from the phones, a list

that probably hasn’t changed much over the decades.

If you do leave something on the tram, you have two months to reclaim them before they are destroyed or passed to the Local Police, depending on the item. The tram authorities take steps to locate the owner, again depending on the object. Go to your local station if you think you left something on the tram and they will do their best to help you. Last year 499 “lost” objects from the TRAM found their way back to their owner, a third of the total handed in.

Mega ship arrives

THIS week the port of Valencia welcomed the largest vessel that has even stopped there, the “MSC Eloane”. Constructed in 2016 the container vessel from Liberia is 400 metres long – about the same as four football pitches - has a draft of 16 meters and can carry almost 20,000 standard size shipping containers.

It was stopping on its way to the Oman from Morocco and its huge draft means it would be unable to enter many ports. Earlier this month the vessel sparked a salvage operation after it lost around 40 containers in stormy weather off Fiseterra, causing a hazard to busy shipping lanes.

Monopoly fever!

A social media campaign encouraging people to vote for the squares on a new Spanish version of Monopoly has three Alicante towns in contention. There will be 20 places named when the votes are counted up and Alicante, Elda and Elche are all currently in the top 20 and with a good chance of making the final cut.

Alicante City has

had its chances boosted after the Mayor made a call on social media for people to vote for his town with thousands responding accordingly.

Elche is in 18th place and may lose out on a spot by the time the votes are completed in mid-March. Elda is the biggest local surprise as a relatively small town which currently ranks seventh with 40,000 votes – almost as many as live there. Elda has also

been running a media campaign, promoted by their tourism office.

A total of 20 cities with a population of 50,000+ will take the majority of the spaces while there are also two set aside for those with fewer than 50,000.

Bizarrely the town of Pedroso in La Rioja has the most votes in either category with 425,000 - despite having an official population of just 77 people.

Oldest man passes away

THE world’s oldest man, Spaniard Francisco Nunez Olivera, died on 29 January.

Francisco lived in the village of Bienvenida near Badajoz in southern Spain and has been the world’s oldest male since

August last year.

He was 113 on 13 December and still has two siblings left alive who are aged 97 and 93. He is also survived by four children, nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He lived at home although with full time care from his relatives; Francisco

attributed his longevity to a vegetable based diet and a glass of red wine a day.

The mantle of oldest man now passes to MasazouNonaka from Japan while the oldest woman in the world is 117 year old Nabi Tajima, also from Japan.

School whistle-blower attacked

A pupil who reported another student for bullying was attacked himself when leaving school the same day, apparently as an act of revenge. The mother of the latest victim, who attends a secondary school in Sant Joan d’Alacant (Alicante), has complained to the school, saying the protocols in place should never have revealed the

name of the person who made the complaint.

Vicious thief jailed

A Valencian court has sentenced a man to twenty years in prison after he assaulted an elderly woman he was robbing,

blinding her in one eye.

The 78-year-old victim was known to the assailant as she lived nearby on a farm. In 2016 along with an accomplice, the man disguised himself with a

mask and broke into the woman’s home. She was assaulted in an effort to find out where any valuables were kept and her head was banged repeatedly against the floor which resulted in

the loss of her eye.

The pair escaped with just €50 in cash, plus a haul of jewellery and a watch. The police later tracked them down and they were convicted of

violent robbery and other charges. His accomplice had earlier been convicted of five years in jail, receiving a lesser sentence as he had not taken part in the assault.

KING Felipe VI of Spain celebrated his 50th birthday on 30 January and in an important symbolic act he passed on the Toison de Oro (Golden Fleece) to his daughter and heiress, 12 year old Leonor, whose official title is Dona Leonor de Bourbon, Princess of Asturias.

The necklace had been passed on to Felipe himself by his father Juan Carlos in 1981, who was also present at the ceremony. It was made in 1430 and has passed down the Spanish royal line as a symbol of sovereignty and power.

Around 80 people attended the relatively low key ceremony at the Royal Palace, ranging from leading government figures to 20 children who has taken part in a national contest called “What is a king for you?”

What Shakira’s tax evasion case means for expats in Spain

In some of my previous articles I have written about the Common Reporting Standards and the importance of becoming a resident and paying your taxes correctly here in Spain.

Spain is no longer the sleepy ‘manana’ country we once knew it as. Technology and EU legislation means that Spain, along with the rest of Europe, is moving forward when it comes to sharing information and like it or not, now is the time to make sure you are doing the right thing.

Residence in Spain is determined not simply by the number of days in the tax year an individual is present in the country, but also by whether your centre of vital interests

is located here, as the famous singer Shakira is finding out!

Colombian singer Shakira is currently undergoing investigation for tax evasion during the years 2011-2014, with the belief that she was a de facto Spanish resident and as a result, her worldwide income would be liable for taxation in Spain.

Shakira’s partner, since 2010, is Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique, who is the father of her two children. The singer officially made Spain her country of residence in 2015, the same year in which the Beckham Law was reinstated. The Beckham law, was introduced to attract higher earners to Spain by taxing them on a territorial basis – ie tax would only apply to Spanish source income, however, from 2015, all ‘employment’ income, foreign or Spanish, is taxed as a Spanish source of income, while other non-Spanish source income – for example royalties,

performance fees, etc – will continue to fall outside the scope of Spanish taxation.

Few expats will qualify for the Beckham Law, introduced specifically so the football legend could protect his income while playing for Real Madrid.

However, those who opt to remain non-residents, and limit their time in Spain to 183 days per financial year, could fall foul of the Spanish tax authorities if it thinks it worthwhile to pursue them.

It isn’t unusual for the taxman to scrutinise an individual’s residency status, as this will often determine whether they are taxed on their worldwide income if resident, or only on a source basis if non-resident.

The reality is, it isn’t difficult to become a Spanish Resident and people should not be worried about paying their taxes here in Spain. Yes of course the tax situation is different here and for some people it may mean

a slightly higher tax bill but there are also areas where your money might become more tax efficient.

Language barrier for top judge

THE man favoured to be appointed as the Spanish representative in the European Court of Human Rights Constitutional Court may have to withdraw his candidacy as his English and French are inadequate.

Francisco Perez de los Cobos’had indicated on his CV that his knowledge of both languages was good.

However tests for the role showed his level in both

languages to be rated as “poor”.

Perez de los Cobos was formerly the President of the Spanish Constitutional Court, pretty much the highest judge in the land and the favoured candidate by the Rajoy government.

There are two other candidates for the role and Martin y Perez de Nanclares, a specialist in foreign legal advice, is now the favourite to land the key role.

Paedophile kidnap foiled

IT transpires that a man who tried to kidnap an 8-year-old girl had been arrested a few weeks previously on allegations of paying teenagers – including minors –for sex. The latest incident happened in Alicante City where the child was out with her mother last week. The 73-year-old suspect grabbed her by the arm and a struggle ensued which ended in the man fleeing the scene after bystanders intervened. He was soon picked up by police despite attempting

to disguise himself; a search found him to be carrying scissors and erectile dysfunction pills.

When he was identified the police found that the pensioner had been arrested on 9 January amidst allegations from teenagers aged 15 and 16 that he had paid them in cash and drugs to have sex with him possibly due to his age. flight risk and he remains in in his motor home. THE Governor for the Lions Club of Spain paid a visit to l’Alfas del Pi last week.

Jose Luis Alvarez Fernandez visited the City Council where he met with local dignitaries.

He also met with local Lions Presidents from the Alfas and Benidorm branches as well as representatives from other

international clubs in the municipality.

There are 1.5 million Lions Club members across over 200 countries who strive to raise money for good causes, usually local to their own branch. The worldwide associations have always had a philosophy of building close ties with local residents and councils.

WOULD YOU CHARGE PERANTS £6 PER KID TO ATTEND A BIRTHDAY PARTY? The Sun Newspaper recently reported on a Mum who has been slammed for charging for her twin sons’ friends £6 go to their birthday party.

Ruma Ali says she can’t afford the cost of paying for all 60 of their classmates to go to an indoor play park in Leicester.

The 29-year-old single mum was criticised by other parents for asking them to fork out for their kids to celebrate little Shiyan and Kiyan’s fifth birthdays.

One said: “My older kids are secondary in school and in all my years hosting of and being invited to kids parties, I have

never been asked to pay for attending a party.”

But Ms Ali defended her request, explaining that each of her sons are in different classes at school so they both had large sets of friends.

She added: “I didn’t want anybody to get left out.

“I thought I don’t want to pick and choose which friends can come. I thought, invite the whole class and then nobody’s upset.

“I thought ‘the parents’ would understand.”

Ms Ali, a student, said the basic rate to hire the Fun Valley play park in Leicester is £11 per child — meaning a total of £660 if everyone attended.

But she still expects to pay out up to £500 on goody bags and other treats even if some parents help subsidise the cost.

She added: “I am a single mother with twins, and I spoke to many parents about how to the organise party and how many children to invite.

“I could not

invite half the class and not the other half, so that is the reason.

“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But this was the best way for me.

“I’ve already had 40 children get back to me to say they are attending so it’s sure to be a great party.”

She was backed by supportive pals and other parents on social media, with one writing: “It’s an amazing thing you are doing for your twins and other kids attending”.

Another added: “If I knew that by paying £6 for my child to go to a birthday birthday that would put a smile on their face as well as the birthday boy/ girl I wouldn’t hesitate”.

AGE OF FIRST STROKE IN ENGLAND FALLS

The average age of people in England who have a stroke for the first time has fallen over the past decade, new figures show.

It dropped from 71 to 68 for men and 75 to 73 for women between 2007 and 2016, Public Health England data shows.

Over the same period, the proportion of first-time strokes suffered by 40 to 69-yearolds rose from 33% to 38%.

PHE said the data showed strokes do not just affect the elderly and urged more people to be aware of the symptoms.

It said the drop in the average age of first strokes was because of a fall in the proportion of strokes suffered by over-70s.

This appeared to be due to better healthcare for the elderly, including health checks, that are helping them to monitor stroke risk factors, PHE said.

The Act FAST campaign is calling on people to phone 999 if they spot any signs of the condition in the face, arms or in speech to reduce the risk of disability or death caused by delayed treatment.

DRIVING OVER 70MPH? YOU WILL BE FINED

Drivers caught going at more than 70mph on the new stretch of smart motorway on the M1 will be fined.

Road safety bosses have confirmed that when the cameras are switched on anyone caught speeding will be punished.

And the cameras will stay on too meaning that even in the early hours of the morning you won’t be able to exceed 70mph, the Derby Telegraph reports.

Darren Roberts, manager of the Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team (CREST) for Derbyshire Police, said he was “shocked” to discover new cameras between Tibshelf services and junction 29A at Duckmanton were the most profitable in the county in 2017.

The four cameras caught 8,382 drivers – with the fastest recorded at an eye-watering 128mph.

But Mr Roberts, who has dealt with scores of horrific crashes during his career, believes the 24-hour cameras should make the roads safer if more people are made aware that they will be prosecuted.

“The cameras are not there to generate money,” he said. “They are

there to catch speeders, get reckless drivers off the roads and ultimately lead to a reduction in collisions.”

Cash raised from speeding fines goes directly to the Government.

Mr Roberts issued a heartfelt plea to motorists to take their foot off the accelerator, saying the “extreme trauma” of fatal and serious crashes can rip families apart and mentally scar people for life.

“To all the speeders out there: imagine if you had to knock on the door of a victim’s family to tell them their loved one had died because of your reckless driving” he said.

“It’s just not worth the risk.

Speeding can never be justified.

CREST is working with the Derbyshire roads policing unit to crack down on

“Some people will always drive over the speed limit, or use their mobile phone behind the wheel, but we’re trying to educate people – especially younger drivers - of the severe consequences of their actions,” Mr Roberts said.

“If you are using your phone and are distracted for even a few seconds, you could cause a serious crash and take someone’s life.

“Slow down, concentrate on the road and don’t risk your life or the lives of others.”

Theresa puts on the gloves Theresa May has signalled she is preparing for a fight with Brussels over its demands that EU citizens should be able to secure full residence rights in the UK during the Brexit transition period.

Ms May said she is “clear” that there should be a difference in the rights afforded to people who arrived in the UK before the expected March 2019 Brexit date and those who come afterwards.

She made her comments after the EU set out its demands for the two-year transition period, including the one which would increase the number of EU citizens who can win UK residency rights after Britain officially quits the bloc.

But a group representing EU citizens immediately warned that her stance would bring “utter chaos” and inflict “widespread discrimination” in their search for jobs and homes.

MPs on the Conservative Party’s right wing are even more annoyed by the proposal, because they believed the matter had been settled in the “withdrawal” phase of Brexit talks, which reached agreement at the end of 2017.

Green memento Beatlemania is back

A French couple have left 20,000 square meters of forestry in their will to the small village of Jesus Pobre, just outside Denia. The land has been bequeathed on the condition that it is not built on or developed and remains a green zone to be enjoyed by all.

However, please don’t forget that skiing is tough on your eyes! Here are some FAQs about skiing and the eyes to make sure you can enjoy the sun safely on the slopes this season.

Q. Why are my eyes more at risk when I’m skiing?

A. The skies on the slopes are very clear and the reflection of sunlight on the snow is very strong. These two factors combine to be potentially damaging to the eyes and could lead to long term effects.

Q. How does this affect my eyes?

A. Although people know how important it is to keep skin protected from the sun, few realise how

damaging UV rays can be to the eyes.

The UVB rays can irritate the surface of the eye, causing a painful form of sunburn called photokeratitis. You may not even be aware whilst out in the snow, as the effects can take 6-12 hours to develop. Long-term exposure to UVB can cause cataracts and even ocular tumours.

Q. How can I protect my eyes whilst out on the slopes?

A. All you need is good sunglasses, but make sure you choose the right ones. Always read the label carefully and choose the maximum protection factor available. Remember that eyes will be exposed to high levels of UV even if it’s not sunny. Choosing sunglasses without the right protection could damage the eye by causing the pupil to dilate, increasing the amount of UV light filtering into the eyes, so always keep this in mind when selecting your eyewear.

Some disturbing facts...

A new survey reveals that the amount of time the average person spends on the loo is double the time they take to exercise! It found Britons clock up an average of three hours and nine minutes on their loos every week and only 90 minutes being active!!

The NHS recommends that adults should do 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity exercise, such as cycling,

swimming or brisk walking, however more than six million adults in England are so physically inactive that they are not even doing one brisk 10-minute walk each month.

More than a quarter (26%) exercise for 30 minutes or less each week and overall, nearly two-thirds (64%) of Britons sit down for at least six hours a day.

Public Health England (PHE) that reveals the shocking levels of inactivity among those aged between 40 and 60. This puts them at risk of health problems

including obesity, diabetes and premature death.

UK active says a lack of exercise claims 37,000 lives each year and costs the UK £20bn.

So, thinking about exercise...

For us lucky people living in Spain, regular exercise can be really easy to achieve and enjoyable into the bargain! Think about it, what could be more enjoyable than walking along the sea front either between Altea and Albir, or along the paseo in Benidorm. For those looking for a more challenging walk a brisk walk up to Altea church or Albir lighthouse can really get your heart going. We are also surrounded by the sierras and there are lots of walking groups in the area. For those not so keen on walking, maybe swimming is your thing? We are blessed with long hot summers – perfect for swimming.

If you are planning to start any new exercise you should first get the ‘green light’ from your Family Doctor, especially if: •You have been sedentary for over a year.

•You are over 65 and don’t currently exercise.

•You have had a previous heart attack or stroke.

•You are pregnant or you’re having difficulty getting pregnant.

•You have been diagnosed with heart conditions.

•You have diabetes.

Unusual Fruit Carica papaya, better known as the papaya or pawpaw, is surprisingly well suited for growing locally. It doesn’t like cold very much but so long as you can keep it frost free it should do well.

Papayas are fast growing shade trees which are probably best (and cheapest!) started from seed. You can use any shop bought papaya for seeds, but you will probably get the best results if you use seeds from locally grown papaya fruit. They are grown commercially on the Costa del Sol so that shouldn’t be too difficult. Just save the seed when you cut the fruit up to eat and select a sunny and sheltered place in your garden.. Don’t start them in pots as papayas don’t transplant well. Anything that disturbs the roots sets them back. The most fool proof way to grow them is to

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA - Part 25 simply plant them where they are to live.

Papayas need a lot of feeding, so this is one case where preparing a very good planting bed (or beds) is a good idea – the advice about growing plants hard and lean does not apply to fruit and vegetables! Sow the seeds as soon as you think any danger from frost is past.

Sprinkle on 20 or 30 of the seeds.

Sounds a lot but all will become clear!

Cover the seeds lightly with more compost, and then mulch the plot well. The seeds usually take about a couple of weeks to germinate but may take longer. As they grow you will notice that your seedlings are very different in size and vigour which is why you planted so many seeds. Pull out the weaker ones and just keep the best.

At this stage you should keep about half a dozen plants. Papaya plants can be male, female, or bisexual, and you want to make sure that you have some females or bisexual plants amongst your seedlings as

male papayas don’t bear fruit.

Papayas start flowering when they are about one metre tall. The males flower first.

Male flowers have long, thin stalks with several small blooms. Female flowers are usually single blooms, bigger, and very close to the trunk..

Pull up most of the male plants. You only need one male for every ten to fifteen female plants to ensure good pollination.

If you get any that seem to bear the characteristics of both keep them, as these bisexual plants will do both jobs!

And that’s it. You could end up with one very strong and healthy female plant per bed. with a male plant somewhere near.

If the weather is warm enough and if you are growing your papayas in full sun and in good soil, then you could be picking the first ripe fruit within 10 months.

Give them as much food as you can and as much water as they seem to need bearing in mind the ever present danger of over watering especially when it is cool.

Papayas fruit all year round but young plants are the most productive.

So just keep planting more seed. That way you always have some healthy and productive plants around, and you won’t need a ladder to pick the fruit. Save your own seeds from your healthiest and tastiest plants, and over time you will breed the perfect papaya for your garden.

House prices in Madrid and Catalonia rising at fastest rates since the last boom House prices in the Madrid region and Catalonia are increasing at rates seen in the last property bubble. In fact, price hikes in Madrid in Q3 last year were even bigger than during the bubble a decade ago.

Adapted translation of a recent article published by the Spanish daily El Mundo According to the property price index published in early December by the Spanish Statistical Institute (INE), the change compared to Q3 2016 was over 12% in the Madrid region. The figure tops the 11.3% registered

in Q1 2007, when the INE started compiling the index and when property prices soared to record highs on the back of the construction bubble.

Catalonia hasn’t quite yet reached the 11% hikes seen in the region during the first months of 2007, but at 10% prices are rising at the second highest rate on record.

The situation in these two regions contrasts sharply with that seen in the many other regions.

In Extremadura, prices haven’t changed over the last year. In Asturias and Castilla-La Mancha, prices

have gone up by less than 1% and in Castilla y Leon, Murcia and Navarra, increases are around 2%.

The only other region where prices are rising near double digits is the Balearics, though at 9% in Q3 they are still a long way off the almost 16% record set in 2007.

Despite the significant difference between regions, the sharp increases in the dominant cities of Barcelona and Madrid have driven the national average up by 6.7%. This figure is the highest year-on-year rise in the national house price index since Q3 2007.

DRY January has become something of a hit amongst those wanting to put the excess of the party season behind them and it on the face of it the Brexit negotiating teams on both sides of the pond are taking it easy too.

The cut and thrust of the talks between Team Britain and the EU gang led by Michel Barnier may have disappeared from newspaper headlines but there are busy bees behind the scenes...and plenty of squabbling amongst elected representatives thought to be on the same side.

Mr Barnier has been visiting capital cities of the 27 member states who apparently are all for one and one for all, despite a few hiccoughs as individuals write a post−Christmas wish list for their own individual future.

The head honcho of talks, who may be missing the television exposure, has been busy discussing “technical” matters with leaders staying loyal to the bloc.

And there is also the feeling that since December and the ‘sufficient progress’ on opening matters – this allows things to move on to future trade agreements come the Spring – it was no way “mission accomplished” and opinion is being sounded for the way ahead with the EU hoping to have things ready to go before MEPs in the European Parliament by October.

All quiet on the Brexit front? Not a bit of it. In London and out in the constituencies there are still star shells popping above the leave and remain trenches and heavyweight bombardments before Brexit Secretary David Davis goes back over the top.

Mr Davis has also been forced into action over the so− called transition period, itself not necessarily a fixed period of time but about two years, give or take.

campaign and has claimed the two years after March were simply a “deferral” of Brexit because over the period the UK would follow EU rules.

Mr Rees−Mogg said it would be “more honest” to say Britain was effectively staying part of the bloc for an extra two years. He said in the adjustment period, the UK would be a “vassal state”.

Lobbing the matter back across no man’s land, Mr Davis said “no vassal us”.

He stressed that would only be true if it was a situation to last “in perpetuity”.

And he told the House of Commons the country would not “be sucked into something that is not an implementation period but an extension.”

However, Mr Davis does anticipate clashes with some EU nations over the small matter of Britain being allowed to seek out new trade deals during the transition period.

“Firstly, we will not be a member of the union. We will be replicating to a very large extent the operations of the single market and customs union to make sure there is a single change, from the point of view of businesses in particular,” he said.

“We will not be subject to the duty of sincere cooperation, which is what stops us arriving at trade deals now – negotiating and signing trade deals now.

So that freedom will exist.”

Former Prime Minister David Cameron has admitted that the effect of Brexit so far was not as bad as first feared.

The man who called the 2016 referendum had campaigned to stay a member and warned of the gloom and economic shockwaves of quitting.

The one time Conservative golden boy was speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos and broadcast on Channel 5 news.

“As I keep on saying, it’s a mistake not a disaster,” said Mr Cameron in an apparently unguarded moment as he chatted with delegates. “It’s turned out leas badly than we first thought. But it’s still going to be difficult.”

VIRTUAL CURRENCY HACK CONCERNS

AS the Bitcoin and other “cryptocurrencies” continue their rollercoaster ride on the markets, concerns have risen once again about the security of the funds. This comes after a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange was hacked, losing around 58 billion yen (€430 million). Coincheck, the firm involved, admitted the loss and said that about 90% of the loss would be made up from their own company funds.

The currency in question this time was NEM, a similar concept to Bitcoins which is also becoming increasingly popular.

The virtual “hot wallet” they were stored in is connected direct to the internet, increasing the risk of letting hackers in.

A “cold wallet” is stored offline and much more secure. The Japanese Financial Services Agency has given Coincheck a deadline to submit a report outlining the new security measures they intend to implement to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Amongst their concerns are that the company would be unable to reimburse lost funds if a similar incident reoccurred, meaning investors could bear the brunt of these losses.

The best known virtual currency, the Bitcoin, has seen huge fluctuation in the past few months, rising tenfold and then halving in value more recently. This has led to increased interest in other similar currencies such as NEM, which was subject to the recent hacking, as well as ethereum, litecoin and Ripple.

Suspect suacide for Glee star Mark Salling Actor Mark Salling has been found dead in what appears to be suicide, according to his lawyer. The actor, who was 35 years old, was one of the protagonists of the series ‘Glee’ and had again monopolized the headlines in recent times for a case of child pornography of which he pleaded guilty.

“I can confirm that Mark Salling has passed away early this morning.

Mark was a kind and caring person, a person of great creativity, who was doing everything possible to compensate for some serious

Fears for pines

THERE are concerns about the health and survival of areas of pine forestry in and around the Javea area as the “sirococcus conigenus” plague that attacks the trees has been recently found in pine trees at the Cabo La Nao, Balcon al Mar and Costa Nova areas.

The issue has been raised at the latest Town Hall session and Kiki Mata, Services Councillor, clarified that actions are being taken, although the adverse weather has slowed down the operation.

THE next meeting of the Xabia Book Circle is on 6 February where the topic under discussion will be the role of the British International Brigades in the Spanish Civil war. Dolores Long will be talking about this fascinating period and in particular her father’s time in Spain as a brigadier.

Dolores will also talk about one of the Republican heroines of the war, La Pasionaria (the Passionflower). She was a Basque, real name Dolores Ibarruri Gomez, who inspired many with her “No pasaran”, or they shall not pass, slogan which became famous during the battle for Madrid in 1936.

Benidorm Missing Brit in rescue drama

LOCAL Police in Benidorm were the first on the scene after a passerby reported that an elderly man had fallen at Cala Tio Ximo in the Serra Gelada.

He could not move and appeared to be suffering with the cold but as the victim could not speak any Spanish the witness was unable to give more detail.

When the police arrived they formed a human chain

to rescue the man. Further questioning revealed him to be a 68-year-old British citizen, an Alzheimer’s sufferer who had been reported missing earlier

that day by his family.

He was treated by health care workers at the scene and moved to the Marina Baixa Hospital for further monitoring.

Movie money

BENIDORM generated €3 million in direct sales as a result of audio-visual productions made in the town last year. There were 95 productions filmed there last year, an increase of 12% on 2016. The money came from overnight stays

by film crews (which averaged 3.5 nights) and other people linked to the production such as caterers.

There would have also been a less quantifiable amount of money generated from publicity, much of which will not be realised until this summer.

production is seen as an excellent way of promoting the city at almost zero cost, said Mayor Toni Perez.

Productions ranged from major TV programmes such as the British sitcom “Benidorm” to small scale advertisements that wanted to use Benidorm as a picturesque backdrop.

A British newspaper has reported how some travel agents have been discouraging stag and hen parties from going to Benidorm, prompting speculation that the resort is taking major steps to restore its family friendly image. The Scottish Daily Record said that Allan McDonald, 34, had been planning a stag trip to Benidorm but two separate travel agents said he could run into problems in the resort. The group of nine would not be welcome in many hotels and they would need to split the bookings into pairs. Even

then they faced being asked to leave if the hotel discovered that they were together for a stag party.

In the end Allan and his friends opted for the pricier, but less choosy, option of Tenerife.

Emma Martin, from Freedom LTD in the UK which specialises in organising stag and hen trips said “Hotels are becoming more stringent on allowing groups of stags and hens to stay. Some really hate them and have raised prices to discourage the groups.”

Benidorm’s RH Hotels Group, Levante Club and Grand Luxor Hotel have all confirmed that they

will not accept stag or hen groups as well as group bookings of more than four rooms. It is thought that many other hotels and

apartments have similar policies, either officially or unofficially. However The Eventa Group, which specialises in such trips,

said that stag bookings were up by 17% last year – although admitted hen parties had reduced by 25%.

Stealing more than your heart

POLICE in Benidorm have arrested a young woman who was perpetrating a scam known by them as “the theft of love”. The modus operandi is that a young and attractive woman approaches an older or sometimes drunken man

in public, claiming to offer sexual services; while pawing the men they will skilfully pocket valuables such as watches or phones before the victim realises what is going on.

Often men will not realise until later they have been robbed. However if they do

cotton on the women can resort to violence, sometimes with a nearby accomplice. Such a scheme had been running in Benidorm during last January, and after an investigation three elderly victims identified the girl who is currently under arrest, an 18-year-old Romanian national.

A student from Callosa has received a prestigious award for her educational achievements at a ceremony held in the Hotel Madeira in Benidorm this week. Marta Martinez received the Isidro Cortina Prize which recognises the top student in the Marina Baixa each year. Marta is studying Biomedical Engineering at Valencia University where she achieved the highest score of anyone taking the course, 11.7 out of a possible 12.

She was awarded the prize by Benidorm Mayor Toni Perez, which included €3,000 to further aid her studies. Andres Laporta, President of the Rotary Club which sponsors the award, was also in attendance.

Fashion in the swim of things

THIS summer Benidorm is the venue for the first National Design Awards for swimwear.

Chosen partly due to its history as the first Spanish resort to allow the wearing of bikinis in public 65 years, many argue the city is what it is today due to swimwear.

The contest is aimed at new and up and coming designers under the age of 35 and the judging panel

have now decided on the final 13 designers whose outfits will be on show. The first prize will be €10,000 plus of course the prestige of winning a major fashion competition.

The event is supported by the Spanish Fashion Industry Confederation, Madrid Universities Design Centre, Aspara Fashion Technology and Dolores Cortes Swimwear as well as local sponsor the Hotel Melia.

Unwelcoming site for tourists

THE opposition party in Benidorm has condemned the “lamentable” site that greets visitors to the new tourist office on the Rincon de Loix.

The newly opened office, built for €180,000, is surrounded by the remains of the building work as rubble, building materials and rubbish are

piled up behind a fence next to the building.

A PSOE spokesman said this would be unacceptable anywhere but as this area will be many tourists first port of call in the city the situation is even worse. There are also health and safety issues at the site as the dumping area is not signposted or adequately protected.

BENIDORM’S Council of Women for Equality met for the first time this year at the end of January a group which has representatives from politics, associations and municipal professionals from the city amongst its members.The session was chaired by Paquita Ripoll, the Councillor for Equality, and the main topic on the agenda was plans for International

Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March.

IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of

women as well as being a call for gender parity.

It has been observed for nearly 100 years and many feel it is more relevant now than at any time in the past.

Help for hard of hearing

BENIDORM’S Urban Planning Department has announced plans to upgrade the sound system in the Assembly Hall.

As well as improving the sound for all, the improvements will also include a new system to allow people with hearing

impairments to listen to the shows and events.

Councillor Jose Gonzalez de Zarate said that “the new sound system will have a digital table with 16 channels, speakers, subwoofers, amplifiers and a sound processor as well as a magnetic loop”.

The magnetic loop acts to reduce background noise

making the sound far better for people with impaired hearing.

The work has been costed at €9,500 and the plans have been submitted for final audit which should be processed by early February.

Help for bedridden Cycle route

L’Alfas del Pi, in collaboration with the Red Cross, is running a course to train people on increasing the mobility of people in the town classed as bedridden. The course,

which is 12 hours long in total, will be held each Wednesday until midMarch and run by a Red Cross expert in the field. It aims to show the different reasons for people being bedridden and teaches things such as mobilisation

techniques and postural changes.

The course is promoted by the Social Centre as part of the T’Avalem project, which gives people a mixture of employment and training to help them back into the workplace.

It was launched in June last year with a grant from the Generalitat of just under €200,000. At the end of each completed module or course students receive a certificate to show competency and attendance.

Emergency cover at weekends

ALTEA’S Health Department is finalising plans to ensure that emergency ambulance cover is provided at the weekends especially for school sporting activities. The moves

have been made in collaboration with the Sports Department and the town Councillor for Sports, Pere Barber, said “There is an urgent need for this cover. It’s logical that the service is provided during sports activities where there is

always the possibility of suffering an injury.”

The agreement has yet to be fully signed off but in the interim there will be an ambulance on standby at the Municipal Sports Centre on Saturday mornings.

Opel threaten move from Spain

OPEL have warned that they may move production of the Corsa model out of Spain if the factory where it is produced cannot improve aspects of their production. The Corsa is Opel’s best -selling brand, and it has been made at a factory in Zaragoza since

1982. However there are concerns about productivity, flexibility, hours worked and high wages there.

The PSA Group, which recently acquired Opel from General Motors said “There will only be investment if the plant is profitable. However the Opel plant in Spain is at a disadvantage to other PSA factories in Spain.”

With 14 yellow cards, two dismissals and a lively atmosphere, the Marina Alta derby between CD Dénia and CD Jávea lived up to its reputation as one of the most brutal rivalries in the area, a history of friction that one could argue stretches back several centuries. There was plenty at stake aside from local bragging rights.

If Jávea won, they would leapfrog their rivals into second-place in the table and firmly establish their play-off credentials.

And it started well when leading scorer Álvaro smashed home a penalty after coming out on top of a tugging match inside the area. The referee spent much of the time scribbling into his note-book, showing six yellows in the opening halfhour as well as a straight red to Jávea’s Lucas Bou for a poor tackle. The referee was said to have bottled it in the heat of the moment with the Dianense fans sensing that each uproar was welcomed

by a positive (in their eyes) reaction from the officials. Down to ten men, Jávea were on the back foot and it was no surprise that Dénia bundled home an equaliser just before half-time. In the second-half Jávea rallied to try and force themselves in front again. But midway through the second period, Vergi was adjudged to have handled in the area when he fell after slipping on the wet surface and a penalty was awarded to the home side by the assistant referee, reacting in the face of a baying mob in the stands behind him.

With seconds remaining, a curled cross into the area is fumbled by the Denia keeper under pressure from Jávea, it drops to the ground and is smashed home for what should have been the equaliser, greeted by a huge roar from the travelling army. But, alas! The goal is ruled out by the assistant referee and Denia claim the victory, its intimidation tactic paying off. Jávea slip to fourth.

Sporting weekend OVER 3,000 people of all ages participated in Ontinyent’s “Weekend of Sport” in January.

Events started on the Saturday morning with the fourth City Trail, a children’s race which raises money for good causes, this

year’s being to help fund care programmes for children of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Sunday’s big event was the adult road races, one walking and one running which attracted 1,200 competitors. Awards

were handed out afterwards by Mayor Jorge Rodriguez and some of his councillors. Evening sports over the weekend included volleyball, a rugby match and basketball for seniors and females.

Celebrities at Benitachel Bowls Last Friday Channel 5 aired the TV programme Costa Del Celebrity where 5 celebrities spent two weeks in a villa sampling life on the Costa Blanca.

Anne Diamond, Ainsley Harriott and Christine Hamilton made their way to the Benitachell Bowls club where they spent an afternoon filming. They were shown having a lesson with club Captain Trefor Evans , Anne Diamond seemed to do rather well and declarded that she loved the game and wanted to live here! They followed their lesson with drinks on the terrace chatting with other club members about expat life.

17th January 2018 - BBC v Bonalba Today we took a short journey down the AP7 to Bonalba and played our match there on a fine sunny morning.

Once again there were some close games and the match finished with two winning rinks each and a drawn game, so five points each, but BBC took the additional two points for the overall shot difference. End result 7 - 5 in BBC’s

favour with a scoreline of 90 - 79. A great win for the Berleen team by 24 - 11, which will keep the pressure on at the Top of the Table.

Northern League The BBC Tigers were at Javea Green playing their rained-off game against the Quartz, where they both won on two rinks with Javea taking the shot difference.

PEGO GOLF SOCIETY STABLEFORD COMPETITION On a morning when we were due to play golf at Oliva Nova, it was very cold, with the bottom temperature at 08.00 between 3 and 5 degrees centigrade.

The sun eventually came through after about one hour’s play,

We were playing a Stableford competition, and the 39 members were joined by only two guests, and they were Carla Chaszczewski (A good

11 Second Stunner! Olympic doping ban overturned for 28 Russian athletes

Christian Eriksen has scored after 10.5 seconds for Tottenham Hotspur in their 2-0 win over Manchester United for the Premier League’s third fastest goal.

The fastest goal in the Premier League was netted after 9.9 seconds by Tottenham’s Ledley King against Bradford in 2000.

Alan Shearer scored the next fastest goal after 10.4 seconds for Newcastle against Manchester City.

BT SPORT, which televised Wednesday’s Tottenham game, recorded Eriksen’s goal as being

0.1 seconds slower than Shearer’s.

Doping bans on 28 Russian athletes were overturned on Thursday, throwing the International Olympic Committee’s policy on Russian doping into chaos just over a week before the start of the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

The Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the appeals of athletes given lifetime Olympic bans for doping violations during the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, saying there was

insufficient evidence to show they had broken the rules.

The ruling means that athletes’ 2014 results are reinstated and they could now seek to participate in the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, which open on February 9. n a further 11 cases, CAS ruled that doping violations had been committed but that lifetime bans were not justified and the punishments were cut to a ban for the 2018 Games alone.

The IOC said the decision “may have a serious impact on the future fight against doping,” and added that it could yet appeal the decision at the Swiss Federal Tribunal, the country’s highest court.

Among the reinstated athletes were crosscountry skiing gold medalist Alexander Legkov, men’s skeleton gold medalist Alexander Tretiakov and women’s skeleton world champion Elena Nikitina.

Formula 1 Shake Up F1 races in 2018 will start at 10 minutes past the hour with the Bahrain GP becoming a full night race and the French GP scheduled for a lateafternoon start that avoids a clash with England v Panama in football’s World Cup.

In a radical rewriting of the schedule, this season’s races will start at 10 minutes past the hour with all of the European races moved back at least 70 minutes from their traditional 1pm UK time slot.

GRID GIRLS GOODBYE

Formula 1 has decided to end its tradition of using ‘grid girls’, saying it was at odds with modern “societal norms.”

However, some of the

women are now protesting on social media, saying their role was grossly misrepresented.

F1 announced the demise of the tradition in

a short statement on Wednesday. “While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula 1 Grands Prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds

with modern day societal norms. We don’t believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula 1 and its fans, old and new, across the world,” said Sean Bratches, managing director of commercial operations.
