Stoppages will begin on September 15th unless the Spanish airports authority AENA meets the demands of three main unions – and bring travel misery to tens of thousands of passengers.

25 Days of airport strikes

Many of the strike days target weekend travellers and will also hit passengers flying to celebrate national holidays, especially in December.

The announcement came as a bitter dispute continues at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport rumbles on. Security staff members continue an action over pay and condition – a situation that already threatens to spread to Valencia and Alicante airports and cause massive disruption to the Costa Blanca’s high season.

Guardia Civil officers have had to take over security duties at the Catalan capital after staff launched indefinite strike action.

Saturnino Martinez, head of security in Valencia, said his staff would consider action if

the government resorts to a mandatory settlement for the Barcelona workers – the Spanish cabinet is to vote on the matter next week.

The Barcelona action has already caused flight delays and long queues for passengers on some of the busiest days of the year.

AENA’s 8,200 workers are demanding pay rises of around 8%, better working conditions, and the hiring of a further 700 employees.

They claim AENA profits have soared to “hit 40 per cent” last year to €1,164 million - the number of temporary contracts in the company increased by 17%.

If the wave of mass industrial action does materialise following Wednesday’s announcement, all the essential services at airports will be affected.

The vote for a general

strike would hit 25 airports across Spain.

Car park staff, luggage belt-operators, security, Information Technology, retail and catering staff would all down tools in action stretching to the end of 2017.

Three unions – USO, CCOO and UGT - are behind the proposed action against airport AENA, but remain hopeful a deal can be struck to avoid industrial action.

The move by unions first involves presenting a request for arbitration.

If there is no agreement reached within seven days, an official strike

will be registered with the Ministry of Labour.

This approach leaves room for a solution which avoids bringing weeks of disruption to a vital transport sector.

At present, the 24-hour strikes are set for five days in September, seven days in October, two days in November and 11 days in December.

The proposed December calendar of action includes five consecutive days from December 26th to 30th, maximising the disturbance caused to Christmas and New Year travellers.

BARCELONA TERROR ATTACK

A terror attack left at least two people dead and 20 injured in Barcelona yesterday (Thursday) when a van smashed into pedestrians in the tourist hotspot of Las Ramblas.

People were warned to avoid the area as emergency services responded to a “major incident” police are treating as a terrorist attack.

As The Weekender went to press, it was understood the driver fled on foot and was being hunted as the city went into lockdown.

TIMETABLE OF STRIKE ACTION The planned stoppages are: September -15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th, and 29th; October - 1st, 6th, 11th, 15th, 27th, 30th and 31st; November - 3rd and 5th.

Action days proposed for December are: 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, and an inclusive run of five days from 26th to 30th.

HORROR stories at 35,000ft this week as Auntie Beeb brought us a Panorama special investigation about the appetite of the nation for hitting the bottle before hitting the skies.

It was a bit of a rum do - well actually vodka, gin and even humble beer also featured – especially when showing the intake of a foolish few at sunrise when the bars are open at airports and before most people are even pouring milk over cornflakes.

Just about everyone likes to take a terminal tipple to start their holiday; a minority equates that with sinking a skin full at the bar and continuing to top up once the flight is on its way.

Scenes recorded in the air showed the worst behaviour, the sort that gets a flight diverted and people getting their collars felt - and arrests, like alcohol sales, are soaring.

A sober suggestion from Ryanair followed. Limit everyone to two drinks each at airport bars. No mention there of the profits generated by ´take outs’ from duty free shops or even sales on board (these are said to help make low cost air travel viable).

struggling to reach their departure gate.

Scenes of goings on in the sky were decidedly scary and, sadly, cabin crew and passengers are increasingly faced with dealing with or witnessing violence and sexual assaults in the air. Welcome to the new mile high club.

Airports and airlines have signed up to try and deal with the problem and get the ‘be responsible’ message across. Depressingly, based on the BBC’s programme, it does not seem to be working.

The government may be forced to take action and look at the exemptions to the licensing acts that allow airport bars an early opening; it is in any case an offence to board an aircraft under the influence.

At the end of the day, it is another case of the minority spoiling things for the majority. Hopefully it will not call ‘time’ on raising a glass to toast a trip away. Cheers!

And talking of air travel. Crossed fingers that a deal can be reached with unions representing workers at Spain’s airports ahead of the start of a campaign of industrial action and the inevitable chaos.

Night travel nightmare Fall girl

THERE have been renewed calls to improve overnight transport links for passengers arriving at Alicante-Elche airport.

There are currently no public buses between midnight and 5.40 am and the taxi service is reduced at night, despite a number of passengers, up to 3,000 sometimes, arriving at 1 or 2 in the morning.

Feedback from passengers at Spain’s fifth busiest airport is very negative regarding the overnight transport and the Alicante Council has said it is looking into the issues.

The simplest short term

solution would be to increase the number of overnight taxis available and many feel that companies such as Uber - unpopular with licenced cabbies – would also help address the issue short term.

Holidaymakers protected

PEOPLE booking their holidays online are set to get the same consumer protection as if they had booked through a high street travel agent.

The move comes due to the

introduction of new rules by the European Union, designed to close what has been described as “a gap in consumer rights” if online companies cease trading while you are on holiday.

The new protection will also cover third parties such as hotels and hire

cars if they are booked as part of an online holiday package.

The new legislation is due to take effect in July 2018 and will include consumers from the UK, despite Britain going through the process of leaving the EU.

FIRECREW were able to extricate an eleven-year-old girl who had fallen ten metres down a hole in an abandoned factory in Valencia. The accident was reported in the early evening on 14 August, close to the Ribarroja metro station.

Somehow the girl had fallen into a cylindrical silo and the rescue was described as “complicated”.

However the 12 firemen, helped by the SAMU emergency ambulance, were able to free the girl who has now been hospitalised with multiple fractures. The rescuers later posted a video of the rescue online and this can be viewed on Twitter under @ BombersValencia.

HELP’ss summer support

COSTA Blanca charity ADIMA’s summer programme supporting adults and children with learning disabilities received a €4,000 boost thanks to Jalon Valley HELP. HELP makes an annual donation to the Pedregeur-based Association de Discapacitodos de la Marina Alta; a group of eight volunteers attending the centre to make the donation.

Those who had not visited ADIMA before were given a tour of the facilities before everyone was treated to a paella lunch, cooked

by Nicklaus, the association’s President.

It was noticed care staff would benefit from an electric bed and HELP has delighted the centre by duly purchasing and delivering one.

A spokesman for HELP said: “The annual donation is given towards ADIMA’s summer activities which are vital in providing support

and stimulation to children and adults with learning difficulties.

“Jalon Valley HELP reaffirms its commitment to ADIMA and the work it does.

The members of staff are all very committed and do a wonderful job and we hope to support them for many years to come.”

Train bosses left sheepish Skull case

A train company manager has hit the buffers after dismissing passengers struggling to use London’s Waterloo Station during massive engineering work as ‘sheeple’.

The South West Trains official went off the rails when she used the description to describe customers being herded through the terminus, according to bosses.

The rail company has suffered years of criticism for overcrowding on its prime commuter routes into London

accused of treating people “like cattle”, the reduction in size of its seats on carriages, and has been hit by a long-running campaign of industrial action by staff.

And it was in the headlines again when Louise Shaw used the word ‘sheeple’ in advice to the extra workers at Waterloo, hired to help passengers through the planned three months of disruption.

The Sunday Times reported her tip to agency workers was if they could get one group of passengers headed in the right direction, the rest would follow

just like flocks of sheep.

Around 600 extra members of staff have been recruited to help smooth the passage of people through the United Kingdom’s busiest railway station.

The work is proving a test of people’s patience and a challenge for travellers, who might not be too happy at being thought of as mere livestock.

However, the train company believes its manager is a lone wolf and insists no one else uses the ‘sheeple’ word.

A spokesman said: “This is not a word we would expect to use to describe our passengers.”

Fall mystery cleared up

POLICE believe they have now been able to identify a woman who fell at Alicante Castle earlier this month, nearly a week after the incident occurred.

The woman, initially described as being about

thirty years old, is thought to be a 41-year-old Swedish national. She fell off a seven meter wall at Santa Barbera Castle and was hospitalised with various health issues, including severe back injuries and problems remaining conscious.

No-one witnessed the incident and she carried no ID although she did have a mobile phone.

She is believed to have been receiving treatment for mental health issues, although the police think that the fall was probably an accident.

POLICE have solved the mystery of a human skull found in a public rubbish bin in Alicante City last week which prompted an investigation.

The skull was found by a man searching the bin for salvage who reported the incident to the police.

The remains were then sent to the coroner who confirmed they were human and police sealed off the scene fearing a serious crime. However, the skull has been traced to a medical student who was authorised to have the remains for his studies and had recently disposed of them.

British dad and son fined over laser attack in Malaga

A British tourist and his teenage son could be facing fines of up to €600,000 after being accused of shining laser pens at aircraft.

The pair were staying at a hotel close to the flight path for Malaga airport where a number of pilots had complained about having the pens shone in the cockpit as they came

into land. Authorities were able to trace the source of the light beams and arrested the 41-year-old and his fifteen-year-old son.

The Spanish police said that they took such

incidents very seriously and the pair could be looking at fines ranging from €30,000 to €600,000 if found guilty of the offence.

Under current UK legislation similar

offenders would currently only face a fine of around £2,500 (€2,750), but the government have put forward plans to increase fines or even issues jail terms for the offence.

MRS May was away and the Westminster mice have been out to play but now the boys and girls of the ‘leave’ school of thought have had to make up with the youngsters still hankering for the ‘remain’ game, at least in public.

In a bid to show a united government, Chancellor Philip Hammond and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox – leading figures representing both sides in the ongoing debate - have come out with a joint wheeze.

They used the pages of the Sunday Telegraph to stress that the UK will need a transition period to adjust after Brexit, when the Union Jack is hauled down from EU flag poles in March 2019 (possibly).

The boys were keen to stress this temporary deal would not be indefinite and certainly not a ‘back door’ to staying on as part of the bloc. No way, Mrs May... Brexit still means Brexit.

The united front is presented ahead of negotiations starting again with our friends across the water and ministers begin to look carefully at the small print of the divorce and a number of papers will outline the proposed future.

And so Messrs Hammond and Fox have now told everyone in the playground that it will be a “time-limited” period and would not halt Brexit, instead underlining it would “further

our national interest and give business greater certainty.”

During the period, the UK would be outside the single market and outside the customs union. It is intended to avoid a “cliff edge” come Departure Day; though the terms of D-Day are still obviously a mystery.

The playground has been rife with rumour all summer.

First of all were the tales of a leadership challenge, hard on the heels of the snap election and the Tory party losing its majority. Theresa May now appears to be on probation.

And pro-Brexit MP Jacob Rees-Mogg – the latest man tipped for the job, although he says he does not want it – believes the party remains “broadly united” over Brexit.

Now a former top aide has weighed in and trumpeted leaving the EU will be a “calamity”. James Chapman, once chief of staff to Brexit Secretary David Davis, believes a new centre party – called The Democrats – should fight to oppose Britain’s departure.

He accused the fringes of both major parties of dominating moderates and said naughty politicians wanting Britain to get out of the EU told a few porky pies prior to the referendum. Remember the 350 million quid a week for the NHS, perhaps it was just battle bus banter?

Respect the red

LIEFGUARDS at Guardamar beach have said they are becoming increasingly frustrated at bathers who choose to ignore the red warning flags, putting themselves and often the guards in danger.

During last Tuesday’s fiesta day sixteen swimmers had to be rescued while the red flags were flying in the morning, some of them children. Jose Oliva, who coordinates the beaches for the town, said that most people don’t understand the dangers of swimming

Summer slowdown

AFTER early indicators that 2017 was set to be a record breaking summer for tourism, fears are creeping in that numbers are not set to be as good as first hoped.

August is of particular concern, especially for the last two weeks after the 15 August “bridging” bank holiday has finished. Alicante’s Provincial Association of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (APHA) said “doubts exist about high availability” which also appears to be the case for early September. Early indicators are that July showed a slight improvement across the province on 2016 although Benidorm, for

example, looks set to show a small drop in occupation rates.

One of the factors blamed is the rise

in popularity of unregistered tourist accommodation, something which remains a major concern for the industry in the area.

NATIONAL Police have arrested three people in Alicante who they have accused of placing a neighbour’s personal details on a website offering sexual services.

The woman complained to the police after being flooded with calls of a sexual nature, often several a day over a period of three months.

It is believed that those arrested had quarrelled with the victim which prompted them to post her details in retaliation.

Police say that the trio will be facing charges of crimes against moral integrity.

After the fire, the floods

THE term biblical would usually seem an over the top description for the weather, but Javea’s Granadella area’s residents must feel it is appropriate after recent flooding and fires.

Last summer much of the area was devastated by forest fires that destroyed over 800 hectares of land with flames going as far as the coast. Then last week saw flash floods hit the same spot with a massive torrent of water creating a new ravine on the cliff-tops. Roads were

blocked, many houses and businesses were cut off and had flood water on the property and 50 sunbeds were swept out to sea.

Due to last year’s fires it is still prohibited to park cars in most of the Granadella and if they had been there the situation could have been much worse, as they would probably have been swept away and could have damaged property or endangered life. The city council has begun the clean-up operation but full recovery for the local beauty spot now seems further away than ever.

New accident near cycling black-spot

A cyclist has been seriously injured after being struck by a car on the N-332 between Denia and Gata de Gorgos. The accident happened on the morning of Friday 11 August although police did not release any details until after the weekend.

The 51-year-old victim has been described as having multiple injuries and is currently being closely monitored

in Denia Hospital. The driver of the car was breathalysed at the scene but was found not to have consumed any alcohol.

Four cyclists have been killed in the Denia area this year so far, all of them on the N-332 between Denia and Oliva.

Slippery customer

POLICE in a Valencian town have been amongst those searching for a python that has gone missing.

The half metre pet escaped from its cage in a flat in Torrent and it is not known whether the creature is hiding somewhere in the flat or is

elsewhere in the apartment block or even the wider area.

Authorities have warned neighbours to be on the lookout and although the python is not said to be dangerous many have admitted the thought of the animal appearing in their property makes them “uncomfortable”.

Elche Fireworks injure eleven

ELEVEN people sustained injuries during Elche’s Nit de l’Alba fiestas on 13 August. One of the injured was only eight years old and though all required treatment none of the victims had to be hospitalised.

The firework display is the climax to the traditional event and, as many of the devices are hand held, injuries are common. An estimated 3,000 kilos of fireworks were set off in the

hour between 11pm and midnight; as well as the burns caused by holding them two spectators were also hurt by falling rockets.

The child injured was believed to be holding a firework and the most serious burns will require outpatient treatment for several weeks.

The fiesta also includes the setting off of the Palmera de la Virgen which consists of 1,300 rockets tied together and is said to be the world’s largest firework.

Beach burglars

JAVEA police believe they have apprehended two people who have been behind the recent spate of thefts from the town’s famous Arenal seafront.

The pair may have committed

at least sixteen thefts since July and police said that the situation was starting to cause “marked distress” amongst beachgoers and traders in the area.

The Guardia Civil have been running an operation to try and put a halt to the thefts

and earlier this week saw two men acting suspiciously on the beach, clearly looking for unattended items. The pair, Romanians aged 48 and 62, have been arrested and charged with 16 offences of theft and one of attempted theft.

The police think there may be several other victims and have asked anyone who thinks

they may have had goods stolen in the beach area to come forward.

Scorching Sunday

SUNDAY 13 August saw two more serious forest fires take hold across the Valencia Community.

The first to break out was in a remote area between Benissa and Moraira at about 3pm. Helicopters, planes and fire crews attended the scene and managed to get the blaze under control, although the operation was hampered by the fire occurring on a steep and rugged area of land.

At 7pm a second fire broke out in a forest near Bunol in the Valencian Province, and again a number of crews were called out and were able to control the fire later that same evening.

The recent heavy rainfall may well have prevented the fires from getting out of control as quickly as they would have done prior to the storms.

Assault charges dropped

SIX men arrested in Gandia in connection with a sexual assault have been released after the woman who made the allegation admitted she lied to the police.

One of the men was originally charged with the assault while the others were charged with not intervening or not contacting the authorities. The seven all lived in the same residence in Gandia and the woman admitted she made the accusations for reasons of jealousy.

A fast track trial was held for her after the confession and although the judge originally declared a sentence of one year, this was reduced to a suspension and fine as she had no criminal record and had fully admitted her misdemeanour.

New park for Teulada-Moraira

PAID for with a European Union subsidy, Teulada-Moraira has now officially opened its new park.

Parque La Sabatera is a green space located between Calles Valladolid, Tarragona and Xirona and its inauguration was made by Mayor Carlos Linares and Provincial Vice

President Francisco Mengual last week.

The €60,000 EU subsidy paid for improvements on the plot which was already owned by the town including landscaping, fencing, installation of paths and planting of trees. Bollards have been installed to ensure that no cars can enter the area and a bio network has also been completed.

Two men prosecuted by FGV for Bar crackdowns trespassing in rubber dinghies brings results

TWO young men who navigated flooded “rivers” with plastic dinghies in an abandoned metro network have received an official complaint by the Valencian rail provider, FGV. The two filmed themselves navigating the tunnels on the uncompleted T2 line and posted their journey to YouTube where it quickly went viral. However FGV said that they were trespassing and would have had to scale a four meter fence to enter the area.

any prosecution was done to deter similar thrill seekers from following their example. Work on the T2 line came to a halt in 2011 and it is hoped that the work will eventually resume – although FGV admit it is unlikely to be before 2023.

A recent increase in police presence on the streets of Elche, specifically to look for bars that are breaking the law, has resulted in a number of prosecutions.

Two bars have been accused of selling alcohol to minors and two other for selling tobacco to minors and for opening outside of the designated licencing hours. The tighter controls are part of a crackdown on the sum-

mer “bottelon” parties on the cities’ streets, popular with youngsters in the summer months, both locals and tourists. The initiative involves the Unidad de Actividades arm of the local police and has been hailed as a success by Mayor Cesar Zaragoza.

The increased police activity has forced many bars to comply with the law, while those that choose to still flout it will be subject to heavy fines or even closure.

to be both original and inventive with their serving methods and creativity of the menu.

For me, the start of the meal really sets the scene of what’s to come, so the popadoms take a major part of the eating experience. Like most Indian restaurants popadoms are served with a selection of dips and here, the display is colourful and exciting. There are five different types of dip for me this demonstrates the quality and perfection of the way things are done at the India Gate restaurant. Spicy onion, tangy sweet Mango Chutney, Minty Yogurt, sweet BBQ, and traditional Lime Pickle with this combination you certainly get your taste buds going.

For my main, I regularly choose a curry with a sauce and my favourites are often Madras or Pathia. Both of these are fairly hot and spicy but this time I had made a decision to eat tandoori style. I had seen a number of customers eating grills and the sizzling dishes that were being delivered from the kitchen and the amazing smells just got the better

of me. So my choice was to have a Tandoori Mixed Grill together with a side dish of Spinich and Cheese (Sagg Panir) and a Taka Dhal (lentils) and of course a Garlic Nan Bread. My colleagues ordered a Cheesy Chicken and a Chicken Tika Masala both served with rice. When our food was served the large sizzling grill was placed next to me that had an outstanding quantity of food displayed, Chicken, Lamb, King Prawn and Salmon Tika together with onions and peppers, the tarka dal and Spinach with Cheese were perfect accompaniments. The curries are served in stylish individual pots that have a burner within the base that keeps the food simmering away.

India Gate is always busy and it is very rare to see empty tables so I recommend you make a reservation. The wealth of experience of the Indian chef and his kitchen team are the reasons that this restaurant needs very little help from me recommending the authentic food as it is common knowledge that the cuisine is the best you can get in town and people travel from all over the region to dine here.

Q. Are people allowed to take their boat anywhere?

A. You can take your boat anywhere really to discover the many hidden beaches and coves along the coast, Moraira, Javea and Denia are all very popular for boat owners to visit and stop along the shores around.

For bigger boats then it is possible to travel to places

such as Ibiza or Malloca ...

Travelling to places such as the Balearics are a favourite for boat owners, as well as other places such as the coast north of Barcelona are popular destinations.

There are courtesy moorings up to two hours, enabling owners to have a walk around a chosen destination, to go on shore to enjoy lunch or dinner.

People like to live in Spain for the lifestyle and wellbeing; to endorse the benefits of having a boat takes their enjoyment and vision to a new perspective making new friends and joining in with boat clubs and groups will encourage new boat owners into the community of the sea.

Sometimes there are ‘flotillas’, people who join up to go at the same time to a destination and enjoying trips together. Other events are organised such as Poker Runs, an American idea but a fun thing where owners enjoy a day out visiting different destinations as part of a fun challenge. Q. So who owns a boat? Is it just the wealthy high class or is it something that is affordable for the average family?

Q. Owning a boat is not like owning a car. Is it safe?

Should owners just keep it clean, serviced and maintained or is there anything else to be considered?

A. Being from the UK and owning a boat in Spain has some incredible advantages. A huge number of UK holiday makers own boats in Spain, so when booking their villas and apartments they also book their boat to be taken out of dry dock to the moorings of their choice.

The huge advantage here is being able to use the boats on a daily basis whilst on holiday, with the guaranteed weather during the summer months. Home owners also use their boats when visiting Spain during the winter and spring time with mild weather almost all year around.

British people are used to boats and being a country that has a huge interest and experience with a nautical culture.

British residents and UK passport holders do not pay luxury tax duty, so compared to a Spaniard, who must pay 12% in addition of the normal VAT rate, they are not required to pay this extra tax.

A. For your own personal mooring for a medium range boat, it costs something around 5,000€ for a year - other costs are the annual service at 800€ and insurance at 1200€ for fully comprehensive.

Family Sailing with CBYA The Costa Blanca Yacht Association (CBYA) offers family fun on the water with Real Club Nautica de Calpe (RCNC)-owned TOMs racing yachts as well as private cruising yachts.

Families are given the opportunity to learn the skills of sailing with the assistance of qualified skippers through the CBYA. Recently, a Belgian family spent their holidays on the Costa Blanca and were happy to have

Boats & The Coast Q. Should you buy second hand or new?

A. Second hand boats are not eligible for VAT; for this reason buying a second hand boat is a great starter option and can be an economical way to get going. The key is to buy a good second hand boat; the worst thing is to have problems when starting out and not to enjoy the pleasure of owning a boat.

Second hand boats are sometimes available at Nautica Mengual and the reassurance would be that all boats are thoroughly checked and serviced before being sold, as well as having some guarantees.

Q. What about VAT? Normal VAT applies for new boat sales at 21%, unless you are from a non-EU country; this is now being considered as the UK will leave the EU when Brexit takes place in March 2019.

A. So for a non-EU citizen such as Norway, no VAT is payable on the sale of the boats. So with boats that are not leaving Spain and not being used for six months or less each year it’s a tax free purchase.

There is another way of tax saving when using finance from the French company that is used by Nautica Mengual.

As the boat can be purchased using a lease-ownership scheme, the vessel is taxed at only 10%.

BENIDORM’S opposition socialist party has asked the City Council to confirm that a snack bar on the CV-70 has all the required permits to trade.

The wooden structure, advertising itself as a chiringuito, is located opposite the Panorama urbanisation and has a number of tables and chairs

on the site as well as the shed itself. A spokesman for the group forwarding the request said “we doubt that they meet all the requirements to run this type of business.”

As well as a license to trade they want to see evidence that health and hygiene standards are being adhered to - and if they aren’t expect the city to take the appropriate action.

LA Nucia has announced the details of its photography competition aimed at users of Instagram. The theme of the contest is “Festes d’Agost de La Nucia 2017” and is open to people on Instagram who are following the town on @LaNucia.es.

The competition will be fully online and runs from 14 August until 31 August when the festivities end. The judges are looking for photos of the fiestas and the

winning image will receive a prize of €150 with €100 and €50 being awarded for second and third respectively.

Even if you are not on Instagram you can still sign up and once you have followed the @LaNucia.es page you can then enter by following the instructions there. For those who aren’t familiar with it, Instagram is a social networking site, similar in many ways to Facebook but which specialises in sharing photos and images between users.

Farming Fair

THE second “Els Colors de la Terra” trade and agricultural fair is to be held in Callosa d’en Sarria over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd of September.

The market will highlight local produce, crafts and other products while there will also be entertainment, exhibitions and a full programme of music.

Councillor for Agriculture and Commerce Lumi Puigcerver said “the fair is to boost local and surrounding trade, revitalize public spaces and boost local business.”

This is a vital event as agriculture is the principal economic sector in Callosa, she went on to say.

Spain dominates international property search from the UK

The international property portal Rightmove reveals that Spain is the number one destination by far

for UK-based househunters looking to buy abroad.

Rightmove is one of the biggest property portals in the world, and the market leader in the UK by a wide margin, with a huge database of property

listings both in the UK and abroad. Analysing data collected from millions of searches at its website each month, Rightmove reveal that Spain is the number one European destination for UK-based househunters looking to relocate or buy a holiday home abroad.

Rightmove records more than two and a half million S p a n i s h p r o p e r t y s e a r c h e s made from the UK each month. To put

that in perspective, searches for property in Spain are 70% more numerous than searches for the second most popular European destination France.

Spain is the number one target destination by far.

“A closer look at a year’s worth of property search data from the largest cities shows consistent interest in Spain right across the UK,” explain Rightmove.

“It is the number one sunny destination for Britons from Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow,

Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield.”

It seems that the dream of owning a property in Spain is strongest in Scotland.

“Spain is most popular with sunstarved Scots, more than 54% of searches for property in Spain come from Glasgow, a close second being Liverpool with the second highest number of searches, at almost 50%,” say Rightmove, who have created the following infographic to summarise their research.

Is there a way to invest sensibly and securely in Spain?

I see more and more ‘guaranteed return’ investments offered here in Spain. I always ask myself 2 questions: 1) How are these returns achieved ‘risk free’ when interest rates are near zero? 2) Why do these companies not include information about how and where they are regulated and exactly who it is guaranteeing these returns, as would be the legal requirement in the UK? THE most expensive house in the Communidad Valencia is a 1,600 square meter property in Denia with an estimated value of €9.5 million. The survey, by an online estate agency, found that the country’s most expensive dwelling was an Italian style mansion in Mallorca’s Bay of Alcudia, valued at a whopping

€57.5 million – equivalent to a mortgage of €150,000 a month.

Most of the top ten consist of properties in Mallorca or the Marbella area, with a luxury villa in Marbella taking second place with a value of €27 million. One property in Madrid and another in Barcelona also feature in the top ten list.

Toddler trauma

THE UK press have reported how a mum called a Benidorm hotel “a hazard” after her sixteen month old child broke his arm while saying there.

Olivia Griffin booked a £1,500 holiday at the Rio Park Hotel with her young son Curtis. He broke his arm when tripping over a piece of the bath that was loose and also banged his head badly. Olivia said that this was her third room at the hotel after the first two had un-lockable balconies. She had also complained about the broken bath prior to Curtis’ accident. She has made an official complain to her holiday company, Thompson and said “I wouldn’t call it a holiday. It turned into a nightmare.”

A Thomson spokeswoman said “We were really sorry to hear about this accident and as soon as it was brought to our attention the hotel staff organised medical care. Our resort team offered alternative accommodation but the

guests chose to remain in their room for the rest of the stay. The hotel has since carried out relevant maintenance work to the bathroom and our customer service team is in contact with Ms Griffin to better understand her complaint. We would like to reassure customers that we regularly audit all of the hotels we feature in respect of health and safety.”

Beach peddler brawl

TWO men have been detained without bail accused of assaulting police officers who stopped them selling drinks on Benidorm’s Levante beach. Local authorities have been trying to crack down on the practice, which is unlicensed and also has health and safety implications.

The men, a father and son, were confronted on 11 August by two local policemen and reacted angrily, with other police and peddlers becoming involved. Five police were hurt in the incident and at least one drink seller; although many fled the scene two checked into

hospital for medical treatment and may also face charges. It is believed that the two men in custody were heads of the gang that control the drinks sales. Earlier this week it was reported that there were no signs of any drinks vendors on Levante beach for the first time this summer.

GARDENING ON THE COSTA BLANCA - Part 3 Although the last article gave advice on planting your new purchases, really the layout of your garden should come first!

Obviously this is a matter of personal preferences – you may prefer a strictly formal layout or a more relaxed English cottagey style or, as is quite common around here, one with lots of gravel with a few heat resistant plants dotted around.. Any way, you may want a lawn – this counts as a nasty four letter word alongside work! Grass or grass alternatives are creeping, surface rooters which need the whole surface watered which means installing a sprinkler system which is a waste of water and therefore, a waste of money. People often think that they “need” a big lawn but often the only one who walks over all of it is the unfortunate person who has to mow it!

The reason that sprinkler systems are regarded as water wasters is that, in an area of high evaporation, you really want to water only those plants that you wish to survive (which doesn’t include weeds) - clearly you can’t to this when you throw water randomly into the air

Water should be applied as seldom as possible but in an adequate amount each time. Frequent, for example, daily watering only encourages surface roots which, if a watering session is missed for any reason, are likely to get burnt up with obvious results. Plentiful water applied at infrequent but sensible intervals in a way which helps the moisture to sink down to a level that encourages roots to make their way deep down to comparative safety , makes more sense.

This is also where the nutrients are. In last week’s article it was suggested that 20 or 30 litres every fortnight should be enough for newly planted specimens and obviously this can be reduced as they become established. Eventually, provided that the correct species have been chosen, it may be possible for them to manage without artificial watering at all!

Whatever the precise design of your garden, consideration could be given to planting your garden in concentric zones. By this is meant, placing the plants which need the most water closest to the house thus limiting watering can

What Are the Risks of My Pet’s Exposure to Chlorinated Pool Water?

When added to water, chlorine breaks down into hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion. These chemicals oxidize microorganisms in water by breaking down the cell wall and destroying the structures inside. Without chlorine, pools quickly turn green or even black as algae and bacteria build up in the water.

Drinking chlorinated water may cause minor GI irritation, but it should not cause serious issues for pets. Pets who love to gulp water as they paddle should be discouraged.

Fortunately, most symptoms related to chlorine are minor. Pets who swim for long periods in chlorinated pool water may exhibit some signs of sensitivity, such as red eyes or itchy skin.

Pools with high levels of chlorine may cause irritation to the airways due to the release of chlorine gas, particularly in poorly ventilated areas.

Is Chlorine Toxic for Dogs and Cats?

Like many chemicals with the potential to be dangerous, the hazards of chlorine exposure are dose dependent. Pool water contains very dilute levels of chlorine, and is unlikely to cause chlorine poisoning in humans or animals. From a risk management standpoint, a pet is more likely to become ill from a dunk in a standing pool of water, or a lake filled with unknown microorganisms such as amoeba, than they are from swimming in a properly maintained pool full of chlorinated water.

Pets who swim regularly may experience more frequent ear infections. While owners may wonder if this is related to chlorine exposure, recurrent infections are more likely related to damp ears than the chlorine itself. Your veterinarian can recommend a drying solution to use after swimming if your pet is prone to recurrent ear infections.

Other Pool Safety Risks for Pets

The biggest risk to both pets and people are related to handling the chlorine in its concentrated form before it is placed in the pool. Chlorine tablets should always be stored in their original containers and kept in a safe place inaccessible to pets and children. Chlorine gas can be dangerous if inhaled, and direct contact with undiluted chlorine can damage skin and eyes. It would be very unusual for a pet to ingest chlorine tablets as the scent is often unappealing to dogs and cats, but proper storage should eliminate the risk of chlorine poisoning entirely.

When it comes to swimming, the biggest health risk for any pet is drowning. Although people mistakenly assume a dog’s instinctive paddling behavior means all dogs are watersafe, dogs can panic, tire, and drown in any body of water, chlorinated or not. Owners should always supervise pets when swimming, which allows you to spot any minor problems before they become major ones, whether it’s a cough, exhaustion, or red eyes. With a little monitoring and attention to your pet’s behavior, there’s no reason you can’t all enjoy a nice summer dip.

4. The bell was originally meant to be called Royal Victoria.

5. A great sense of ceremony surrounded its arrival in London. It was brought down the Thames by barge and then taken across Westminster Bridge by a carriage drawn by 16 white horses.

6. That bell cracked during testing in October 1857. A second replacement bell was cast by George Mears at London’s Whitechapel Foundry in April 1858.

7. That bell broke too. A crack developed in 1859 but the problem was solved when the bell was turned a quarter clockwise and chimed with a lighter hammer.

8. Operating from the same Whitechapel Road premises since 1738, the Whitechapel Bell Foundry is sadly to cease trading from May 2017.

9. Big Ben chimed for the first time on July 11, 1859 but it would not ring for long. That September, a crack caused it to fall silent for four years. It has since been quietened on other occasions. For seven weeks in 2007 its chimes were snuffed out so repairs could be made. It also fell silent during nine months of repairs in 1976.

10. The BBC first broadcast Big Ben’s chimes to the country during a New Year’s Eve radio broadcast in 1923.

THE world famous chimes of Big Ben could fall silent on Monday until 2021 to allow workmen to carry out essential repairs on the clock and tower.

Politicians are already backtracking on permission for the move after an outcry the plan is plain ‘bonkers’.

They claim they had no idea a £29 million refurbishment programme meant the bell would be silenced for such an extended period when they granted permission; apparently on health and safety grounds.

Tory MP Nicholas Soames believes workers should wear protective headgear, saying: “Let the poor little darlings put headphones on.”

Brexit Secretary David Davis said halting the chimes was “mad” and urged authorities to “just get on with it”.

One of London’s most recognisable landmarks, the 13.7 tonne Great Bell has sounded on the hour for 157 years but the ‘bongs’ will be disconnected after ringing noon next week.

The bell will still be used for several key events over the four years of silence; including greeting the New Year and Remembrance Sunday.

It last fell silent in 2007 and earlier in 1983 and 1985, for major refurbishment projects. Stopping Big Ben, the common name for the bell in the Palace of Westminster’s Elizabeth Tower will protect workers hearing – but critics in Parliament say halting the chimes is health and safety gone mad.

However, the clock keeper Steve Jaggs believes the move is a “significant milestone” in the restoration.

“This essential programme of works will safeguard the clock on a long term basis, as well as preserving its home, the Elizabeth Tower.”

During repairs an electric motor will drive the clock hands rather than the traditional mechanism and the Great Clock will be carefully dismantled piece by piece and the four dials will be given a spring clean.

And BBC Radio 4, which broadcasts the chimes live, has announced it will continue to sound the bells using a recording.

PINEAPPLES BANNED FROM UK MUSIC FESTIVALS

Fireworks and weapons are among the list of banned objects at music festivals, but the UK’s Reading and Leeds festivals have taken it up a notch: Pineapples are no longer allowed on festival grounds. This is a nod to indie band Glass Animals, whose song “Pork Soda” has a lyric that goes “pineapples are in my head.” Fans of the Oxford band had previously brought pineapples to their gigs, and the band decorated their stage at this year’s Glastonbury with pineapples.

According to the BBC, a spokesperson for the two festivals said that “organizers were a little concerned about hundreds of pineapples turning up on site so decided to ask fans not to bring them along,” adding, “The tongue may be slightly in cheek on this one.” The Reading Festival website now states explicitly that festival-goers may not bring pineapples to the grounds.

Festival tragedy

By Simon Russell A festival in the Castellon province of Valencia was suspended after the death of a festival goer on 15 August. The 22-yearold was attending the Rototom reggae festival in Benicassim when her body was found at the nearby Heliopolis beach in the early evening. Medical staff attempted resuscitation but it is believed that she was already dead at the scene. Police

have launched an investigation although early reports are that the young woman probably drowned.

Benicassim was the site for the huge FIB music festival last month which was marred by a rape allegation from a British woman, also on one of the beaches near the town. The local beaches are major gathering spots for many festival goers, and some even sleep on them overnight to avoid paying for camping.

Unholy water

By Simon Russell ONE of the Valencian Communities most important gothic buildings, the Sant Bertomeu church in Javea, continues to suffer leaks whenever it rains.

The recent downpours meant that once again churchgoers and visitors were presented with the site of plastic sheeting covering the pews and other vulnerable parts of the building.

Costs to repair the damage have been estimated at well over €2 million and arguments continue between the church and the state as to who should pay for the repairs. Sant Bertomeu was built in the sixteenth century and declared an historical monument back in 1931.

The leaks have been occurring for around ten years, and parts of the building are now deemed too dangerous for people to visit.

The social church

By Jack Troughton SEPTEMBER starts a whirl of social events for the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy – helping raise money for the work of the Church of England.

Organisers hope for a bumper turn out of people supporting the social calendar which continues into autumn.

And if people have a problem choosing which to attend, the advice is to go to them all and help boost the fund raising.

The fun starts on Saturday 2nd September with a Garden Party Concert, featuring Amadeus at Finca Jacaranda, Pedramala. Guests should bring a picnic, drink, a table and chairs; the enchanting Amadeus will perform an evening of ‘Songs from Stage and Screen’. Entrance is €12 with a Cava draw. Spring-clean for beach VOLUNTEERS from the Amicitia organisation as well as staff from Greenwichdiving spent their Sunday cleaning the Olla beach last week.

This was following on from the Castell de l’Olla celebrations and is an annual event to ensure that the beach is returned to a pristine state. They collected plastic from the seafront and along the beach while the zone around the bottom of the castle also received its annual deep clean. Amicitia is an NGO that performs various environmental activities in the area and all helpers were thanked in a speech by Tourism Councillor Anna Alvado.

The association CHUMS (friends of charity) is now in its second year and mainly supports food banks on the local area.

And it thanked Luis de Freitas of Costa Less in Avenida Juan Fuster Zaragoza for his ongoing and valued support.

CHUMS President Marilyn Rogers said: “Luis has raised in excess of €225 in cash and provided various prizes for our fund raising.

“He runs the lowcost supermarket and convenience store, open seven days a week, which serves residents and tourists alike at reasonable prices – a sort of ‘one stop shop’ where you always get a smile and a kind word.”

Nîmes will host the third Vuelta Grand Departure to take place outside Spain. 20 years after Lisbon 1997, and after 2009 departure from Assen, the Spanish tour jumps away from its borders once again to hold the first official start to the race in France.

Running from Saturday August 19th to Sunday September 10th 2017, the Vuelta will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,324.1 kilometres.

The 72nd edition of the Vuelta will depart, for the third time in its history, from another country.

The tour will take off from the French city of Nîmes, and two stages will take place entirely on

Gaul territory. We will also ride through Andorra, which will host a finale and a departure.

In the Vuelta, not only the general classification is at stake, riders also fight to be first in the points classification, or to become King of the Mountain in each edition. Points are obtained through the following system: 25 points are given to the stage winner, 20 to the rider that takes second place, 16 to the rider that comes third, 14 to 4th place, 12 to 5th place and then from 10 to 1 point between 6th and 15th place, respectively. Intermediate sprints award 4, 2 and 1 points to the first three riders to complete each one.

Chelsea shirt is champion prize

GENEROUS schoolboy Ryan Walker has given up his prized autographed Chelsea football shirt to help a Costa Blanca charity.

It is signed by 22 players of the 2016-17 Premier League champions and money raised in a silent auction will support HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta open its new hospice and respite care bed at Fontilles.

Ryan gave the white shirt, photographs, and the booklet ‘Unforgettable Memories’ -dedicated to former Chelsea star Frank Lampard to help support the charity – which also features a photo of the teenager.

The shirt is signed by Chelsea and England players Gary Cahill and John Terry, as well as international stars like Cesc Fabregas, Marcos Alonso and Diego Costa.

The youngster donated the shirt after his grandfather John Walker, a key supporter and organiser of the annual HELP golf competition, suffered a stroke last year and has, sadly, just had a second attack.

In the book, Ryan describes as “the best day of my life” when he went to Hamburg to see Chelsea win the Champions League, beating Bayern Munich 4-3.

The photographs of him with players in the changing room and on the pitch were taken at Stamford Bridge in February this year – when Chelsea beat Swansea 3-1 to go 11 points clear in the league.

HELP President Candy Wright said John and wife Gail lived in Jesus Pobre but John could no longer take an active role in supporting HELP. “His grandson knew of his attachment to HELP and wanted to support us too,” she said.

“So he made this very generous offer of donating a life memory to us – which is such a lovely thing to do.

“We are now auctioning the shirt, book and the photographs. There is a reserve price of €500 and we hope to sell it by the end of next month to help our work.”

Team Sky announce Vuelta a Espana lineup

Chris Froome says that he has ‘unfinished business’ at the Vuelta a Espana, where he returns aiming to become just the third rider to win both the Vuelta and Tour de France in the same season.

Only Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault have previously achieved the Tour/Vuelta ‘double’, a feat no rider has accomplished since the Vuelta a Espana was moved to become the last of each year’s three Grand Tours back in 1995.

There will be a strong Team Sky lineup when the race kicks off with a team time trial in Nimes on Saturday 19 August - Chris Froome, Wout Poels, Mikel Nieve, Diego Rosa, David Lopez, Gianni Moscon, Salvatore Puccio, Ian Stannard and Christian Knees.

The four-time Tour de France champion says that the team’s approach to this year’s Vuelta has given him reason to be optimistic about his chances of back-to-back Grand Tour victories.

“It certainly feels as if I’ve got unfinished business with this race. I’ve finished second three times now, but I’ve got a good feeling about this year’s Vuelta. It feels like we’re on much

more of a mission this year, and aiming for the Tour/Vuelta double this season has been a huge motivation.

“I don’t think we’ve been to the Vuelta a Espana

with a team as strong as we’ve got this year.”

Froome, though, is under no illusions about the scale of the challenge – and the harsh conditions the Vuelta offers up to riders.

However, the American says she will not return to the tennis circuit just to make up the numbers, hinting she would quit the sport if unable to perform at the level she is used to.

Serena Williams was two weeks short of her 18th birthday when she beat Martina Hingis to claim her maiden slam title in 1999 She told Vogue magazine:

“Obviously if I have a chance to go out there and catch up with Margaret, I am not going to pass that up.

“If anything, this pregnancy has given me a new power. It’s hard to figure out what the end of your tennis career should look like.

“I used to think I’d want to retire when I have kids, but no. I’m definitely coming back.

“Walking out there and hearing the crowd, it may seem like nothing. But there’s no better feeling in the world.”

McGregor happy with 8oz gloves The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) confirmed they had given the request the go ahead on Thursday, reportedly leaving both camps happy. Originally scheduled to use 10oz gloves, the Irishman is ‘very happy’ with the change.

“I’m very happy with how they handled it,” McGregor said on a conference call with reporters.

“They took both fighters’ requests into consideration, and I’m very happy with it. You’ve got pros and cons on both sides and both athletes asking for it. I am coming up in weight on the gloves. Look at what I fight with (normally).”

The NSAC also discussed

referee option with both camps, with Robert Byrd being given the honour.

“They gave us options, and we didn’t necessarily ask for any ref in particular,” continued McGregor.

“There was a ref or two who gave opinions, and if that’s the case it makes it hard.

“Robert Byrd is a phenomenal ref. He lets the fight take place and steps in when he should step in. He has some links to the MMA world as well, so that’s good.”

Meanwhile, UFC overlord Dana White is excited to see the two boxers have upped the ante with lighter gloves.

“Now we are fighting in

eight-ounce gloves, and it is going to be a fight,” said White.

“Anything can happen in a

fight. I think it affects the contest. Yes, Floyd is faster. But he’s a defensive master. Conor

hits like a truck. Smaller gloves favour him big time. It affects the fight big time.”

Real Madrid shrugged off the absence of the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo to cruise past rivals Barcelona 2-0 in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup to cap a 5-1 aggregate win.

Ronaldo was slapped with a five-game ban for pushing the referee after he was sent off in the first leg, but his replacement Marco Asensio enhanced his reputation as one of world football’s rising stars as he smashed Madrid into the lead after just four minutes.

Karim Benzema then deservedly doubled Real’s lead before half-time.

Barca responded with a more spirited second-half showing and were unfortunate not to at least pull a goal back as Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez hit the woodwork.

Victory continues Madrid’s run of success under Zinedine Zidane with the European champions now having lifted seven trophies in the 20 months since the Frenchman took charge.

“We played a great match tonight,” said Zidane. “Especially in the first half it was spectacular.”

Zidane even had the luxury of leaving first-team regulars Gareth Bale, Isco and Casemiro on the bench as Real’s strength in depth was demonstrated in a

dominant first 45 minutes.

“This team has hunger and every time we play it shows,” added Zidane.

“We have to try to continue like this. To start the season like this is very good, but we know a long season is just starting.”

In similar fashion to his strike in the first leg, 21-year-old Asensio sent an unstoppable leftfooted shot past Marc-Andre ter Stegen into the top corner from outside the box.
