BLUE FLAG AWARDS

ALICANTE Province has once again got the biggest number of blue flag beaches and marinas of any Spanish province, with the 2019 list including three new flags locally.

The provincial total stands at 84 flags(71 beaches and 13 marinas) and to get a blue flag, various factors are weighed up like the quality of bathing water; public information and environmental management.

Only seven beaches in Spain received blue flags for the first time, with three of them in the region, including Playa L’Espigó in Altea, The newly awarded beach is the third beach of the town to fly the blue flag, along with Playa la Roda and Playa Cap Blanc.

The beach was created less than three years ago, in a multi-million euro project, that

demolished a salt water lagoon on the northern side of the town.

The other regional first time winners were Playa de Marines in Nules and Calas de Rocamar in Pilar de la Horadada, with two flags reinstated at Tabarca Island beach(for the first time since 1991) and at Playa Les Deveses in Denia.

ROCK BOTTOM GOLDCAR

SPANISH car rental company Goldcar has come bottom of the rankings for the fifth year on the trot in an annual British survey of car hire outlets.

Goldcar has over 40 offices in Spain, including at AlicanteElche, Murcia Corvera, and Valencia airports, as well as in Benidorm, Denia, and Torrevieja.

Unexpected charges, unhelpful or even rude staff, and pressure selling were some of the reasons that Goldcar finished last once again in Which’s annual car hire report.

Forty per cent of customers told Which that they definitely would

never consider using Goldcar again, as they experienced problems when hiring from the company, mostly complaining of poor customer service and unjustified credit card charges.

Goldcar was actually bought out by Europcar in 2017, but its overall score in the survey has continued to get worse, with Europcar finishing secondbottom.

Rory Boland, Which? Travel Editor said: “The response over Goldcar is staggering. I don´t think we´ve seen anything like those results before in any survey of any company”.

Topping the survey for the best car hire is Canary Island company that got a 97 per cent rating, as opposed to Goldcar scoring just 39 per cent.

Of the larger car hire firms, Enterprise and sister firm Alamo are rated highly by car hire customers.

NO HIDING PLACE

A BRITISH rapist, who was traced to by one of his victims to a camper van in Torrevieja, has been jailed for 16 years.

66-year-old Jeffrey Waite of South Hilton, Sunderland, was found guilty of four rapes of an adult woman, and one rape of a teenager back in the eighties in Hartlepool.

Two of his victims likened Waite to a “madman” and “animal”.

Waite went on the run to Spain in 2016 after failing to turn up for an earlier rape trial in relation to the younger victim.

The jury could not reach a verdict, which prompted the older victim to come forward.

members of the family.

The victim passed the information to the Cleveland Police, who tipped off Spanish authorities that he was in the country, with the

National Police starting a nine month investigation which tracked him down to Torrevieja, where he was arrested on March 8th last year.

Teenager tragedy after ravine tumble A 15 year old girl sustained serious injuries after falling down a 20 metre ravine while cycling in the Vall de Gallinera, inland of the Marina Alta. Emergency services were contacted at around lunchtime on

Tuesday’s May bank holiday and the young woman received urgent medical attention at the scene. She then had to be extricated by the fire brigade before being transferred for further treatment by helicopter.

She was kept under 24 hour surveillance at Alicante’s General Hospital but sadly died this Tuesday, a week after the accident. The young girl has been named as Clara Martinez Marquina, a triathlete who was practising

A TEACHER from Orihuela who has two degrees, including one in English studies, has slammed discrimination against people for not having specific Valencian regional knowledge, in order to work in local schools.

Named as Mar, she has taken to Facebook to attack the fact that despite living in the Vega Baja region, which is labelled as “nonValenciano speaking”, and

Latest figures show that the price of petrol has leapt up by 14.8 per cent since the start of 2019, whilst diesel prices have hiked up to 11.24 per cent.

Father and son Daniel and Liam Poole from Burgess Hill in West Sussex, went to Malaga on March 31st and hired a grey Peugeot 308, which is still yet to be been returned to the firm it was loaned from. Police in both Spain and the UK are liaising over their disappearance, which is said to be totally out of character Detective Chief Inspector Emma Heater of the Sussex police said: “One possibility that must be considered, as they have not contacted family or friends, is that they have come to harm.”

The National Police said they were baffled by the men´s disappearance, with “no significant leads”.

In the north, Jávea logged the heaviest April rainfall since 1944, whilst in the

Euthanasia debate splits the country

VINCENT Lambert was badly injured in a traffic accident in his native France 11 years ago while on the way to his work as a male nurse. He is now in a vegetative state in a Paris hospital bed, something doctors say he will never recover from. In a case that could have implication across Europe, his wife has appealed to the EU Human Rights Court to allow him to die by removing the food and hydration that is all that is keeping him alive.

However his staunchly Catholic parents believe he should be allowed to stay alive whatever his condition and what happens will be “Gods will�. Any final ruling in the court could have implications across the EU, sparking once again the fierce euthanasia debate in countries like Spain.

The crux of the matter is living wills. If, as his wife believes, Vincent would never have wanted to stay alive in his current state and he had clearly documented the fact, then the

health care professionals would have abided by his wishes.

Research has shown that in Spain just 300,000 people have living wills, most of them elderly people or those facing a future with a chronically degenerative disease. This amounts to just 0.6% of the population despite the fact that a recent survey has shown that 87% support euthanasia in certain circumstances. This has led to controversy with recent cases such as that of Angel Hernandez who helped his terminally ill wife to die in agreement with her verbal but unwritten wishes. He was initially charged with crimes of death by gender violence which were dropped but the case against him remains open.

Supporters of the right to die with dignity have said that anyone should spend time to make a document expressing their wishes should they find themselves unable to do so.

Runway Concern ELCHE council has launched an objection to current plans for a second runway at Alicante-Elche airport.

The authority says that the proposals would have a major negative effect on the environment in regard to the protected status of the Aqua Amargo salt marsh, as well as the future urban expansion of the

Torrellano area.

The Ministry of Development is currently undertaking an environmental impact study over the proposed three thousand metre runway, which would be built in parallel to the current runway, as the airport looks to cope with extra air traffic over the next decade.

What does the future hold for Spanish studying in the UK? MORE than 17,000 Spaniards are involved in the British university system at the moment and, understandably, they are concerned about what the future holds post Brexit.

Spanish daily paper “El Pais” commissioned a survey on the issue and said that there are currently 8,700 Spanish students pursuing careers or a post-graduate course with universities, 4,400 are employed directly by them and there are also 4,570 Erasmus students studying in the UK. The paper said not having access to British universities would be like “a World Cup without Brazil” as they still have the most prestigious universities on the continent, despite their current troubles.

There are also concerns for students part way through their courses as well as lesser things such as residence status and driving licences. One study has concluded that if the UK leaves without a deal then the cost of a degree for EU students over there could rise from an average of €9,000 to around €30,000, out of reach for most.

Overall there are an estimated 130,000 European Union students in the UK as well as a further 50,000 EU citizens working in advanced education in various capacities.

CATALAN COURT WIN THE SUPREME COURT in Madrid has ruled that former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who fled to Belgium in 2017 to escape arrest for his role in an illegal independence referendum, can stand in the European Parliament elections on May 26th.

Spain’s electoral commission last month barred Puigdemont and two other fugitive Catalan politicians from standing, but they appealed the decision.

“Wolfpack” supporting teacher arrested Butcher bets on wrong horse GUARDIA Civil officers who arrested a man in Carcaixent (Valencia) believe he is one of a gang behind the recent spate of thefts from cars in the area. He was using a device that cloned the frequency of remote controls and could then be used to open vehicles while he also had a tool that allowed him to force doors without damaging them. CCTV footage showed that he was getting into cars in a matter of seconds and the suspect is thought to be behind at least a dozen such incidents.

The man was arrested at the weekend and had been one of three people arrested less than 24 hours earlier, when he had been detained and then released awaiting charges.

After a number of reports of similar thefts in Carcaixent, Alzira and Petrer, Guardia agents studied CCTV which led to the recent detention.

They have also seized a briefcase containing over 200 remote controls from various vehicle brands and

two devices to capture remote frequencies. It is estimated that around €20,000 worth of goods was stolen in the crime spree; the authorities have reminded people not to leave valuables in their car.

A butcher has been sentenced to three years and nine months in jail after being found guilty of passing off horse meat as beef. He mixed a quantity of the cheaper meat in with genuine beef which was then sold on to a meat wholesaler in the

Endangered bird lays eggs at Benidorm zoo Terra Natura staff were celebrating this week as the female of a pair of rare, storks laid two eggs, due to hatch within the next few weeks.

The two birds, members of the CiconiaCiconia, White Stork breed, arrived separately at the nature park in 2005 and 2006, directly from the Centre for the Recovery of Threatened Species (CREA), in Caceras.

Despite, several attempts in recent years, the pair have been unable to successfully hatch any offspring, leaving vets and keepers at the zoo, on the outskirts of Benidorm, anxious that on this occasion, the outcome will be positive.

Mass arrests in orange scandal

During early Autumn, they would set off ona route of about 3,000 kilometres, which took them to Sub-Saharan Africa for the Winter.

However, climate change has caused them to become sedentary, even though this species is capable of covering great distances thanks to the ascending thermal currents.

Unfortunately, in recent years, their journey had confronted them with a series of ‘Death Traps’, in

the form of overhead electric and telecommunications cables and wind turbines, which has decimated the breed, leaving them on the endangered species list.

The most pleasing aspect of the breeding programme for zoo staff, is the fact that the socializing process of courtship, pairing and breeding shows that the storks have adapted to their new environment.

Religion and politics don’t always mix A nun is under investigation for allegedly changing the voting intentions of two people in her charge without their consent. The incident came to light in the Basque region city of Bilbao and involved two elderly residents of the Mercy convent who were accompanied by the nun to the polling station. Since 2006, the UK government has capped how much you can hold in combined pension benefits without paying extra tax. From April 2019 the limit is £1.055 million.

All UK pension benefits outside the State Pension are counted. After decades of pension contributions, compounding interest, investment growth and tax relief, the limit may be closer than you think.

Once total pension funds exceed the allowance limit, extra tax is payable whenever you access your money – technically called a ‘benefit crystallisation event’. The rates are 55% for lump sums and 25% for income or transfers to overseas pensions.

Calculating how much of your allowance you have used is not always straightforward, especially for final salary pensions. Check

your position with your provider or pension adviser.

Protecting your funds You could secure a higher limit by applying for LTA ‘protection’ from HMRC, but this usually has strict conditions attached.

Expatriates have the option of transferring pension funds to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), which can also provide tax-efficiency, currency flexibility and estate planning advantages.

If you t r a n s f e r pensions into a QROPS and your total benefits are under £1.055 million, you will not face LTA taxes on

the transfer. Once in a QROPS, funds are out of reach of LTA penalties.

Another option is to take your UK pension as cash and reinvest into a tax-efficient Spanish-compliant arrangement.

Lake District

From the city of Como, you can take a funicular train ride into the mountains, visiting the town of Brunate, nestled high in the mountain and offering fabulous views of the lakes from terraces just perfect for sipping a cool glass of wine.

The lake is studded with little towns and eateries, making a full circuit of the lake stunning on the eye, and hard on the waist! Take a ferry from the town of Bellagio and explore the lake´s other

towns, or head to the beaches of San Giancarlo (stony beach) or Lido de Bellagio, a more upbeat mix of beach and cocktail bars.

If you prefer to explore Bellagio itself, make sure you wear great walking shoes! The centre of the town is a mix of restaurants and shops offering traditional leather goods as well as tourist gifts. You can also take a tour of the nearby gardens in the Villa Serbelloni, a 15th century luxury hotel now owened by the Rockerfeller Foundation. Guests of the hotel can obviously tour the interior, but the gardens are open to non guests via a prior booking system.

Nearby is Lake Maggiore, the largest at 65 km in length. Stretching from the North of Milan into nearby Switzerland.

The main town on this lake is Stresa, from where you can take a ferry to reach the three islands on the lake. This town

also offers many water sports, and for the more adventurous, a cable car into the mountains to see the heights from 360 views.

Close by is the lesser known Lake Orta. Haven for the Milanese at the weekends, the rest of the time this lake is mostly deserted and therefore perfect for those looking to escape and discover hidden gems without the crowds. Accommodation around this lake comes in all forms, from luxury high end to apart hotels offering a self catering more budget friendly accomodation.

Located a half hour north of Milan, and with flights direct from Alicante, you can either take a train or hire a car to explore this region. Car hire probably offers the best way to travel around, but public transport will take you to the larger lakeside towns.

Selfish passengers blamed for 41 deaths after horror crash THE aviation industry is going through a difficult period, as one of Boeing’s line of aircraft remains grounded following two separate crashes that killed hundreds earlier this year. An Aeroflot SSJ100 burst into flames on a Moscow runway last Sunday when it made a “hard landing” after being forced to return shortly after take off due to a communications fault.

No passengers were believed to have been killed or injured in the impact, but the fire in the rear of the craft required an emergency evacuation. Meanwhile the cause of the crash remains a mystery, much like the recent Boeing disasters. The pilots part in the matter has been raised, as it is usual procedure to dump fuel if aborting a flight in this fashion so that the landing is not too heavy,something which wasn’t done here. Electrical failures and lightning strikes are also being speculated about.

DNA advancement solves 47 year old murder

1972 was the year that eleven Israeli athletes were killed in a terror attack at the Munich Olympics, that the Watergate scandal which would eventually bring down President Nixon first came to light, and when the average price of a house in the UK was £7,374. It was also the year that college student Pamela Milam was murdered in Terre Haute (Indiana) a crime that was unresolved until this week, almost 47 years after

19 year old Ms Milam disappeared on the night of 15 September 1972 after leaving a party at the Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Her bound and gagged body was found in the boot of her own car 24 hours later. There were no witnesses or physical evidence, at least nothing that forensics at that time could do anything with. As there was no hard evidence the

police turned to profiling and a sex offender, Robert Austin, was strongly linked to the crime. However despite the suspicion around him the lack of physical evidence means he was never charged.

DNA played its first significant appearance in the case in 2008 when new technology was able to clear Austin using evidence retained from the crime scene.

However the case remained very much a cold one until the announcement this week that DNA testing proved within a 99.9% probability that Pamela’s killer was a man called Jeffrey Hand. He had been arrested for murdering a hitch-hiker in 1973 but released three years later as he had been judged to be insane at the time. DNA from the scene and surviving members of Hand’s family proved that Pamela had been another victim of his killing spree and the case is now closed.

However the killler will not be facing trial, as he was shot dead by police in 1978 during an attempted kidnapping. Ms Milam’s sister said “We are happy to know he hasn’t been out there living a great life for the last 47 years” as she finally closed a sad chapter in her own life.

SCIENTISTS have confirmed the discovery of a new species of dinosaur, a close cousin of the infamous Tyrannosaurus rex.

However unlike the huge “Jurassic Park” stars the newly named Suskittyrannus hazelae, which means “coyote tyrant”, is only about three feet tall (less than a metre) and would have

weighed about 90 pounds (40kgs). In contrast its larger relative would have been about 40 feet tall and weighed in at a hefty nine tonnes.

The mini monster would have been around a few million years before the T-rex and may have been close to the top of its own food chain, although what exactly

it would have fed on is not clear. However the Suskittyrannus may well itself have made a tasty snack for the top predator of that era, the fearsome Allosaurus. The new species is the earliest to be confirmed as a relative of the T-rex and would have walked the Earth about 90 million years ago, give or take a month or two.

I fail to comprehend why the operator of this stretch of the AP-7 fails to slash charges which would surely boost income, as well as solving the traditional N-332 bottlenecks.

Some people round here have got it into their minds that the AP-7 toll booths will disappear in the Vega Baja next year, but since there is a different franchise holder on our local stretch, they are in for a shock, as the changes happening in Alicante and further north will not apply down here.

I can´t help noticing a stream of “good news” announcements from town halls everywhere with the local elections being held in a couple of weeks’ time.

Irrespective of political party, do these politicians think that voters are so stupid that they´ll fall for these same old tricks that we get every four years?

THE mayor of l’Alfas del Pi, Vicente Arques, signed off this week on the continued financial collaboration with Crearte Albir, an association for amateur painters in Albir and Alfas. The group was founded in 2008 and their aim is not to teach art but to allow the members to listen to other keen amateur artists for advice and feedback. All styles and levels are accommodated at the weekly meeting in the Casa de la Cultura.

fitness level, as the hike takes in a route from the Albir Faro Visitor Centre up to the Alt del Governador Antennas at 438 metres, before traversing a zig zag route across the seven peaks of the mountain, on a hike expected to take around five hours.

The event, which takes place on Sunday May 19th, allows hikers to witness beautiful views of coast and mountains considered to be amongst the most spectacular in the province.

Walkers will be guided along the route by park employees, who will also accompany them on the return journey by the public number 10 bus.

Owing to the level of difficulty, the event is not suitable for children under 16 years of age and participants must wear appropriate footwear clothing and sun protection and bring water and snacks.

A further activity has also been organised for Saturday May 24th, involves an informative guided walk to the famous Albir Faro.

Attendees will be given ample time to discover the flora and fauna of the area, including rare and endangered species, on the three hour walk.

should be taken along for the walk.

Saving the Castell

JAVEA’S Culture Department have opened a study into the much needed rehabilitation works on the town’s Castell de la Granadella. Originally thought to be built as a fort or lookout post sometime around the 14th century it has sustained damage both from nature and man over the centuries, including

Councillor Quiro Moragues has said that the first stage is to pay a small amount for a contract to determine the full extent of the work required. They will also start investigating whether subsidies are available.

The Equality Department have said that the cash will be used for the support and recovery programme for local victims of gender violence. Spread some Sunshine will use the donation to help children’s homes in Sri Lanka, a cause that is even more vital after the recent atrocities there.

Female takes the strain for the first time

LAST Friday was Javea’s Calvary celebrations when the image of Jesus of Nazareth is returned to its home in the hermitage for another year.

For the first time in its 252 years, this time a woman was one of the carriers, a local Javea resident called Chus.

Last Friday was a bank holiday in the town and the weather also played along after the Easter washout, meaning there were plenty around for the fireworks display that closed the event for another year.

Ghostly tour of history THIS Wednesday 15 May there is a ghostly guided tour of Javea’s historic centre, dramatised in English.

The tour-guide spectre travels the town’s ancient streets, pointing out the sites from his long ago youth and that of his own dead ancestors, including the Crown Prince of Aragon and the pirates that used to be such a part

of the town. He also takes you to and talks about the parts of Javea from half a millennium ago that are still present in the town.

A good walk spoiled LAST Sunday a group of hikers had a trek along the dry river bed of the River Gorgos, an event organised by the Javea branch of the left wing political party Podemos. The idea was to reclaim the route as a “greenway”, a leisure space and one for everyone to enjoy.

While everyone agreed that much of the flora and fauna was spectacular there were also, sadly, large amounts of

rubbish and recently repaired retaining walls that had already collapsed again. One of the walkers said some of the dry river had become “an authentic alternative landfill with enough rubbish to fill a truck”.

Nonetheless the group didn’t let that spoil their day too much, and it was ideal weather to appreciate the great views as well as the natural beauty of the area.

Domestic cats and dogs are the most popular pets in the United States, numbering more than 130 million.

Some people believe that cats are natural outdoor pets and will be happier outside, but according to the Humane Society of the United States, cats will stay healthier as indoor pets.

Since the 1940s, when kitty litter first became available, cats have gradually moved indoors.

Cats left outside adapt quickly and will naturally start hunting smaller mammals. Because they are not as dependent on people as dogs are, they have a greater tendency to stray from their homes. In fact, 20 percent of cats that are adopted were strays.

Environmental concerns. Domestic cats are not part of the natural environment. Even when well fed, their instincts are to hunt. In addition to killing mice and chipmunks, outdoor cats kill millions of birds each year.

Outdoor options. If you want to let your cat enjoy the outdoors, consider an outdoor pet enclosure or a harness. Cats can be trained to go for walks outside on a leash and harness. An outdoor enclosure should be one that keeps cats in and predators out, which means it must have a closed roof.

Why Dogs Do Better Indoors Some pet owners believe that outdoor dogs get more exercise, are happier, and are good guard dogs. According to pet health experts, however, these arguments are simply not true. Dogs

are social animals that crave attention; they are not happy alone outside.

If a dog lives outside, the only territory he will guard is his pen. And instead of exercising, dogs that are left outside spend most of their time waiting for you.

Here are some of the other hazards of keeping a dog as an outdoor pet: Pet health. What Is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a term used when your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to be called diabetes. You won’t necessarily notice any symptoms therefore you can have it and not know it. A simple blood test can tell you if you do. You’re more at risk if you’re overweight, over 45, and you don’t exercise. It makes you more likely to have type 2 diabetes and heart disease, but you can take steps to stop this from happening.

Lose Weight It doesn’t have to be a lot. If you lose just 7% of your body weight, it can make a huge difference (that’s only 14 pounds for a 200-pound person). The first step is to eat healthier food with fewer calories.

Start by keeping track of your weight, eating habits, and physical activities.

Eat Healthily A good rule of thumb is to fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables (asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and carrots, among many others). One quarter

should have starchy foods (like potatoes, sweetcorn, or peas). The remaining quarter should be protein -- chicken, fish, or beans are best. Be extra careful with foods containing carbohydrates like pies, pasta or desserts as they can raise your blood sugar.

Exercise You’ll lose weight faster and feel better if you get out and burn more calories. You don’t need to train for a marathon: A brisk 30-minute walk five times a week should do the trick. A workout buddy can sometimes help you stick to a routine, so call a friend or join a gym and make some new ones.

Aerobic exercise (walking, swimming, dancing) and strength training (weight lifting, push ups, pull-ups)

are both good. A little of both is best.

Sleep The right amount of sleep helps keep your blood sugar at healthy levels. If you can’t stay asleep, wake up too early, or get less than 5 hours a night, you’re more likely to get diabetes. About 7 or 8 hours a night is ideal. For better sleep, don’t have alcohol or caffeine late in the day, keep regular sleep hours, and stick to a calm, quiet bedtime routine.

Don’t Smoke If you smoke, now’s the time to quit. Smokers are 30% to 40% more likely to get type 2 diabetes than non smokers. And if you get diabetes and still smoke, your symptoms may be worse and your blood sugar may be harder

to control.

Medication Certain drugs can help with blood sugar levels and obesity, as well as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. And you’re more likely to have those if you have prediabetes. If you do, take your medication as prescribed -- it can improve your health and help you live longer.

Get Support When you have people to share your good days and bad days with, it can make a big difference.

Peer support groups can be a place to learn from others and get and give encouragement and understanding. Your doctor can help you find one that works for you.

The Supreme Court in Spain has ruled that money paid for a rent-to-buy home scheme is tax deductible in the IRPF tax declaration for investment in property.

This means that the Court takes this type of lease to be a type of construction of the taxpayer’s permanent residence, i.e. the payment of money to the developer.

It considers it as the purchase of a main residence is being in both cases, so that the taxpayer, can benefit from the deduction for the purchase.

So, the theme of this year’s Met Gala Ball, which I admit, I previously knew nothing about, was CAMP. Now, not being averse to a bit of camp fun, I checked to see who had made an entrance in the campest outfit.

Well, the prize undoubtedly went to the amazing Billy Porter, one of the stars of what has become my TV obsession over the last few weeks …… The fabulous POSE. Billy, 49, wearing gold lame trousers, boots and beaded face mask, was transported, reclined on top of a plinth, held aloft by a bevy of beautiful boys.

Carried into the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art by six shirtless men in an homage to Diana Ross in 1975’s movie, Mahogany…… it was probably the best entrance of all time.

Thierry Butcher‘s Kim Not being particularly au fait with balls, I have no idea what the Met Ball is, but I do know it’s been filling the showbiz gossip pages this week.

The singer announced her separation from husband and longtime love, Simon Konecki, back in April, but she can still find a bit of humour amidst the pain.

William & Henry are still top of our Junior League with a 26 point advantage over Blue Moon F.C. Ferrari are introducing an upgraded engine two races early at this Sunday´s Spanish Grand Prix, as they desperately seek to end Mercedes’ domination.

Mercedes have taken one-twos in all four races so far this season with reliability problems and driver errors scuppering Ferrari’s chances.

The new engine will use a new fuel, which also increases performance, and the car will have aerodynamic upgrades.

Team boss Mattia Binotto said Ferrari were “pushing hard to make up ground”.

The Spanish Grand Prix is held on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where Ferrari’s form in pre-season testing led Mercedes to

wrongly conclude they were going into the season behind their rivals.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said there would be “no complacency” in Spain despite the unprecedented winning start to the season.

“We know that it’s not truly representative of the

balance of power this season so far,” he said.

Just one point separates Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ championship, but one thing Mercedes won’t want is a repeat of the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix fiasco when Hamilton and Nico Rosberg

collided with each other to end their races on the first lap.

As previously reported, this Sunday´s Spanish Grand Prix could be the last, as there are no financial guarantees for the race to continue in Barcelona from next year.

Costa Blanca tennis ace David Ferrer ended his career at the Madrid Open on Wednesday night.

The 37-year-old Javea man lost his round-of-32 match to defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-1 in 71 minutes.

After losing, Ferrer received a standing ovation from the crowd at the packed ‘Magic Box’ centre court, then went back to leave his headband on the ground near the net, as Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ played over the speakers.

The popular player announced his retirement last year, playing a number of selected tournaments in Spain, before bowing out in Madrid this week.

Spain´s world champion Marc Marquez won the Spanish MotoGP at Jerez last Sunday ahead of fellow Spaniards Alex Rins and Maverick Vinales.

Marquez led from start to finish and went top of the championship table with his victory after falling in the last race in Texas..

“I’m happy to win this race, and especially happy to do it in this way, because this was the target,” Marquez said.

“It was the plan, be-

cause after the mistake in Austin I said I would like to arrive at Jerez and try to win in the same way, and we did it..”

Two extraordinary comebacks within 24 hours in the Champions League semifinals mean that Liverpool and Tottenham fans have a Madrid date for the final on Saturday June 1st.

If anything, the Wednesday night win for Spurs at Ajax surpassed Liverpool´s four-nil comeback against Barcelona at Anfield the previous evening.

Trailing one-nil from the first leg, it looked all over for Spurs in Amsterdam, as the home side stretched their advantage to three-nil.

But Mauricio Pochettino’s side scored twice through Lucas Moura within five minutes in the second half, but trailing three-two on aggregate they needed an equaliser which would get them through on the away goals rule.

Ajax looked to have survived until Moura popped up for his hat-trick in the sixth minute of added time, as the home players just collapsed on the ground in disbelief.

The previous night, Barcelona´s star players looked out of sorts at Anfield, as Liverpool ruled the roost to overcome a three-nil deficit, and to run out four-nil victors amidst massive home jubilation.

The fact that Liverpool and Tottenham delivered without star players Mo Salah and Harry Kane adds to the enormity of their achievements, and now Madrid awaits the English invasion next month!
