THE Spanish press had plenty of coverage as Jamie Oliver announced the closure of all but three of his chain of restaurants in the UK earlier this week. Notorious over here for “chorizo-gate” after he suggested his own paella recipe including the cured meat, he is actually a popular figure in Spain for his charity work and fresh approach to food, encouraging young people to cook. The closure of the 22 Oliver branded establishments (the three located at Gatwick airport will remain open) will probably lead to the loss of around 1,000 jobs unless a last minute buyer steps in. The 61 overseas outlets are unaffected as they are all franchises. Aimed at the “casual dining market” the brand has faced increasing competition and many think that the relatively high prices and so-so quality of the food were both factors that led to this weeks announcement. Last year Oliver put a large injection of his own cash, thought to be about £13 million, into the business hours before it went into receivership - but that appears to only have delayed the inevitable.

Stick to the cooking Jamie.

A BIG THANK YOU

BRITAIN´S ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, visited Alicante Province this week, as part of a “de facto” farewell tour, before finishing his posting to Madrid in August, having taken the reins in 2014. Manley dropped in to the British Consulate in Alicante on Tuesday, as well as taking part with Consul General, Sarah Jane Morris in a UK residents forum in San Juan

to discuss Brexit. Brexit was also on the agenda for a meeting with the Alicante Chamber of Commerce president, Juan Riera to discuss the possible impact that the UK withdrawal from the EU would have on the area, notably on British tourism. The ambassador then hosted an evening reception

organised by the Consulate in appreciation of around 50 groups and volunteers that work amongst the expat community in Alicante Province and the Murcia region. Groups represented included the MABS cancer charity; Help at Home, Costa Blanca; the Huntington´s Disease Association, Costa Blanca; and the Benidorm British Business Association.

On Wednesday, Manley met representatives of the Alicante Provincial Council and also took part in a special discussion forum in Alicante to look at the future relationship between the UK and Spain. As announced last autumn, director of communications in the government´s Brexit department, Hugh Elliott will take over as ambassador this summer.

Are you Brexit prepared? It has certainly been the most talked about subject in years, and as expats we have lived through some worrying times. The lack of clear guidance and information has been a huge frustration, but Chorus have ensured we’ve been on the front line. Every month for the last 2 years, Chorus have been on the Brexpats in Spain advisory panel at the British Consulate Brexit meetings, so have had first-hand information from the British Consulate and Ambassador on how best to prepare. Both the British and Spanish governments have given clear advice on the best way to ensure a smooth transition for British expats in Spain, and I wanted to use this article to pass on as much of that information as possible. 1.

Get legal

Make sure that if your intention is to live in Spain more than 183 days, you are resident (you might know this as the green card or green paper, depending upon when you took it out). This is the No.1 piece of advice given by both the UK and Spanish governments.

Get a Spanish driving licence If you are a Spanish resident, then you should have a Spanish driving licence. Failure to do so could result in fines, and in the result of a no deal Brexit could even mean that your UK licence would be invalid in Spain.

2. Pay your taxes correctly The rules on this are pretty simple, if you live here, and are resident here then you should pay your taxes on your worldwide income in Spain. Many people put this off simply because they are not 5. Ensure that your finances are in aware of the implications, and may believe they’ll be worse off. Go straight to the source of inappropriate pension transfers, often information, my advice would be to follow to overseas jurisdictions. It’s incredibly

unlikely, under any scenario, that Brits will lose access to their pensions. What is a concern is that if you are living in Spain, you should always have a locally regulated adviser and hold an appropriate pension product. We also don’t know if pension freedoms, which were introduced following EU legislation, may exist in their same form after Brexit. Now may be the time to see what potential benefits could be available from your existing UK pensions.

A young woman died instantly, when a transfer bus carrying newly arrived holidaymakers, ploughed into her on a busy corner of a Benidorm old town street earlier this week. The victim, described as a Portuguese national aged between 25 and 30, had been walking with a friend, when the driver of a transfer coach, with bold livery saying, NICE2MEETYOU, appeared to lose control while travelling downhill in busy, Calle Ruzafa in the heart of the resort. The incident occurred at the

FRIday 24TH May 2019 the UK, enjoying an evening stroll at one of the busiest times of the day in Benidorm, were drawn to area, as the scene of the collision descended into chaos. Pedestrians ran up to unaware drivers who were becoming increasingly impatient, blaring their horns in a rapidly forming queue behind the bus, pleading for them to move aside to allow ambulances and police vehicles to pass. Meanwhile, the driver of the bus, unable to speak, sat alone on the pavement in a state of extreme shock, as his equally distressed passengers remained in their seats, or stood up in the aisle, unsure of what course of action to take. As curious onlookers milled around the body, local police officers arrived on the scene by foot, followed a few minutes later by an ambulance crew and National Police vehicles.

Paramedics administered CPR to the body, while police cordoned off the vicinity of the accident, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of the accident and reasons for the brake failure, remain unclear, as investigating officers scan CCTV footage from nearby cameras and wait to interview the driver who was too distraught to give his account of events immediately afterwards. Meanwhile, the bus passengers were transferred to another vehicle to continue their onward journeys to their holiday accommodations. The area remained cordoned off to allow technicians time to assess the damage to the shop front and balcony above. Trained councillors were made available by Benidorm City Hall, to support relatives of the victim and witnesses to the accident.

Thinking of moving your pension out of the UK? Is it risky to wait? Many British expatriates in Spain benefit from transferring their UK pensions into a QROPS without a UK tax charge – but time may be running out. The UK already imposes a 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’ on EU residents who transfer to QROPS outside the EU or EEA. After Brexit it could start charging transfers within the EU too. You should always take regulated advice to establish if a QROPS is suitable for you, but do so now, rather than risk losing 25% of your pension if the rules change.

Pay Us back In 958 Years by Alex Trelinski

A WOMAN who lived on the Costa del Sol, but plundered almost 88 thousand pounds in UK benefits, has be ordered to pay back the money, but at just £7.65 per month, in addition to getting a suspended 12 month prison sentence. Jayne Kitching, 53, will need to stay alive for another 958 and a half years to repay the money, in a payment plan agreed with the DWP, In Grimsby Crown Court, the mother of two admitted cheating the public revenue between July 2013 and August 2016. She obtained income support, disability living allowance and carer’s allowance having failed to tell authorities she had moved to Spain, with her postings on Facebook drawing attention that she had left the UK. Kitching also admitted taking tax credit from HMRC between September 2013 and April 2017 and failing to failing to let agencies in the UK know that her children had been taken into care in Spain, though they were returned to her custody two years ago. The judge imposed the lenient sentence in the hope that she would not lose custody of her children again, one of whom she has to act for as a full-time carer.

Pet’s paradise WITH a well deserved reputation as a country that loves children, it may be surprising to know that there are now more pets than kids in Spain. There are 13 million registered animals, an increase of 40% in just five years, the vast majority of which are dogs. As not all pets need to be registered the actual number will be much higher, with cats being the second most popular four legged companion.

‘Saga’ under fire A travel company specialising in holiday for the over 55’s, has been accused of leaving two of its Benidorm clients on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Betty Rickerby, 87, from Old Swan, Liverpool, and her friend Barbara Molloy, 75, booked the month long holiday to the resort, with tour company, Saga, after Mrs Molloy’s husband died last year. However, the pair claim their 4000 pound holiday was ruined by constant noise, paint fumes and cold food. They insist the unnamed hotel where they stayed had construction crews, who roamed the ground at all hours, that food was served cold and heavy paint fumes ran thick through the air. Although the couple had been told before the trip that there was some work being done near to the hotel, they were surprised by the amount of construction work going on

Straight away I went to the rep and said I wasn’t happy,” said Mrs Rickerby. Pointing out that there were dust sheets outside her bedroom door, she continued, “We were there for a month, I complained from day one onward and they only moved us in the last week.” Meanwhile Mrs Molloy also complained that, food in the hotel’s restaurant was served cold, “I didn’t pay all this money to come away with Saga to have to microwave my food.” “My husband died last September. This was supposed to be a relaxing holiday, a chance to take a breath,” she said. The pair also said they had to deal with noise every day from

A Valencian restaurant owner is taking travel portal TripAdvisor to court in a case that may have ramifications for the site and the industry. Antonio Calero owns two establishments on the cities beach front, Marina Beach Club and Panorama, both pitching themselves at the top end of the business but not being well rated on TripAdvisor. Marina Beach Club has an overall rating of 3.5 out of 5 and comments include “should be called Toxic Beach” and

“badly trained staff”. In the trial, currently taking place in Barcelona, Mr Calero argues that he never asked for either his restaurants to feature on the website and when he requested exclusion this was turned down. He also thinks that many of the customer reviews are false or even libellous, such as that they are illegally hiring uncontracted staff. Bradford Young, the Vice President of TripAdvisor, is

representing the firm and he states that comments are controlled, primarily by software but also by people if there are queries on the efficiency of this. “We receive millions of comments and we know what is normal. When something is not it stands out and we can control it” he said. The comment about social security fraud had been deleted within 2436 hours, he went on to say. Mr Calero disagrees and is asking for compensation of €660,000.

UNSOLVED MYSTERY

TWO BRITISH men have been found not guilty of kidnapping a waitress outside a night club in the Costa del Sol resort of Puerto Banus in September 2014. A Malaga court ruled that Latvian waitress Agnese Klavina had not been forced into Westley Capper’s car, and also cleared fellow defendant, Craig Porter, of Agnese’s illegal detention. A doorman was also found not guilty by the court. But Essex-born Capper, 41, was instead convicted of a lesser crime of coercion relating to the way he got ‘drunk’ Agnese to leave with him and was handed a two-year prison sentence, whilst Porter, 37, from Liverpool, was found guilty of being Capper’s accomplice and given a sixmonth jail sentence. Both sentences will mean no actual jail time, and both were ordered to pay ten thousand euros each in compensation to Agnese Klavina´s family.

Missing Agnese.

by Alex Trelinski

All sides in the case intend to appeal, with Capper having insisted that he had dropped Agnese off close to a flat that she was staying at, whilst Porter stated that he had fallen asleep in the back of Capper´s car, and did not witness anything. The pair denied dumping Agnese´s body at sea, and her body has never been found.

Capper though has other legal concerns as he faces a manslaughter trial over the death of a woman on a pedestrian crossing in San Pedro near Marbella, while he was allegedly high on alcohol and cocaine. He has already confessed to killing Bolivian woman Fatima Dorado in May 2016 and is expected to receive a two-and-a-half year prison sentence when that case goes to trial.

is being trialled the service was free but once running there will be a charge of two euros, although this will be free to first class travellers and some loyalty card holders. There will also be a premium package available with extensive content and five times the data speed.

Spanish skateboard hero remembered

THE ongoing inquest into the London Bridge terror attack in 2017 this week heard how the Spanish victim in the atrocity was killed. Ignacio Echevierra, aged 39, had been skateboarding with a friend when they saw the attack while cycling home across the bridge. The friend, Guillermo Sanchez, said that Ignacio immediately ran at the attackers who were stabbing two other victims. He used his skateboard as a weapon but was overcome by the terrorists and dies of

stab wounds. Talking about his friend Mr Sanchez said he was “all about trying to help people” and was still carrying a toy he had bought earlier for his little sister back in Spain. Last October Mr Echevierra’s parents received the posthumous George Medal for bravery from the Queen that was awarded to their son. His parents have chosen not to attend the inquest saying they have “complete Ignacio Echevierra faith in the English justice system”. A total of eight people either stabbed or men who carried out died in the attack, run over by the three the atrocity.

World News Japanese drawing a line in the sand with tourism OUTSIDE of Tokyo and one or two other major cities, mass tourism is something the Japanese took part in rather than experienced for themselves until recently. However, as the world shrinks and tourists look for something different from sun, sea and sangria, Japan is seeing a year on year in-crease in foreign visitors - and not all the locals like it. The famous dunes in Tottori which are at-tracting increasing numbers of tourists illustrate this well. The breath-taking sand mountains stretch for almost 20 kilometres along the coast and undulate dramatically, reaching heights of up to 50 meters. However, there is an increasing problem with “sand graffiti”, basically people carving out messages, pictures and whatever takes their fancy, defacing the formerly pristine dunes.

Natalie”, doubtless des-tined for an Instagram account somewhere near you, was the final straw for angry locals who lived in relatively splendid isolation until recently. Fines were introduced a decade ago to halt the practice but they have now taken to putting up signs in various languages, including English and Korean with muttered talk of banning visitors.

2018 was the first year Japan ever exceeded 30 million foreign tourists and, with Tokyo hosting the Olympics in 2020, they are gearing up for a significant rise from that figure. However, many are struggling to cope with Western habits such as eating when walking, excessive drinking and over informality. perilously close to with Iran. His latest ominous comment this week was that war would be “the end” of Iran, something the Iranian Foreign Minister called “genocidal taunts”. The US has now started deploying warships and other military to the Gulf in moves all too reminiscent of those made by both George Bush and a decade later his son. Trump

really started down this path when the US withdrew its support for Iran’s pledge to stop developing nuclear weapons in return for the lifting of sanctions, a move met with a mixture of condemnation and bafflement by most of the western world. Quite why Trump seems so keen to engage in war with Iran is unclear, like so much of his foreign policy. Oil, as ever, could be one answer, increasing friendliness with Israel or even just portraying himself as a Churchillian type colossus on the world stage as he threatens to destroy a third world country with 20 million children. Iran in turn has made it clear they don’t want war but also refuse to be bullied, while behind the scenes their diplomats are said to be deeply frustrated at Trump’s “crazy mixed messages”, many of them delivered through that least diplomatic of tools, Twitter.

SHERPA Kami Rita completed his 24th ascent of Mount Everest on Tuesday, a new record and, in-credibly, his second trip to the summit in just a week. 49-year-old Rita has been working as a guide for 25 years and is vocal in letting people know the importance of Sherpa’s role in helping less experienced - or even highly experienced - climbers achieve their dreams. He told the BBC “Sherpas fix ropes all the way to the top, so they make their way fixing the ropes and the foreigners give

interviews saying Everest is easier, or talk about their courage. But they forget the contribution of the Sherpa. We have struggled a lot to make it happen. We suffer.” “Sherpa” isn’t a word for guide as many people think, but refers to the ethnic groups native to the mountainous regions of Nepal, although they also live in China and Bhutan. Their acclimatisation to low altitude and general aptitude for climbing means that they have been a part of almost every conquest of Everest and other Himalayan peaks

since Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing’s first successful ascent in 1953. Sherpa Rita’s climbing career is far from over and he has said he can easily go on for another dec-ade with the use of oxygen. However, it is more than a job for him and his fellow guides “In every mountain there is a goddess. It’s our responsibility to keep the goddess happy,” he said. “Months before I start an ascent I start worshipping and ask for forgiveness because I will have to put my feet on her body”.

Indian

The Bombay Grill Calpe is the new kid on the block when it comes to eating curry in North Costa Blanca. After having been on my Springtime curry crawl visiting many restaurants across the Costa Blanca I was lucky enough to find my latest addition a gem of a place situated in the heart of Calpe. The Bombay Grill was opened only in the last few weeks and has already taken the town by storm by not only showing off their excellent cooking skills but also they are giving their new customers a complete experience of fun with traditional dressing up and photo shoots. There is something really special about the Bombay Grill as it boasts happiness from the moment you arrive and you then find yourself sitting in the most comfortable surroundings. The Facebook posts showing happy customers is quickly making a name as “The Happy Indian Restaurant”. This restaurant is so interesting it reminds me of the oldest Indian restaurant in London’s Covent Garden, full of Indian themes and authenticity giving you a real Indian feel you could quite easily be in the middle of Bombay! You can’t help yourself looking around at the special decoration and immediately you feel at home, soon after we sat down we were served with crispy popadoms and dips before it was time to study the extensive menu and taste some starters. We shared a mix of Onion Baji - Samosas and a sizzling mix grill of Chicken, Lamb Tika, and Lamb Kebab. The combination of tastes was

amazing I couldn’t wait to get straight on with the main course because it was all so delicious. The choices for our main dish was Chicken Madras, Chicken Tika Masala and also we had a main from the Chefs Recommendations menu. The dishes were served with

completely different styles and with their own individual tastes of spices. You really could say that this was as close as it gets to the real thing. To compliment the meal we had lemon rice and a mix of garlic and Pashwari Nan bread. Our meal was the Indian experience to remember and we will be going back for more real soon! Benidorm dwarf bar investigated A Benidorm bar offering customers entertainment from a performing dwarf, is being investigated for breaches against human rights. Chaplin’s, a busy Rincon de Loix bar, popular with English tourists and groups of stags and hens, received a complaint from Cermi, an organisation representing people with disabilities in Spain, who objected to a sign outside the bar saying ‘Wanna Rent a Midget?’. Alicante’s public prosecutor’s office confirmed they had received the complaint and confirmed an investigation into the claims had commenced. Jesús Martín Blanco, from Cermi, said, “Mockery and derision causes direct effects on all the group that has this type of disability and deepen the stigma of people with short stature, who are treated as jesters”. In addition, Felipe Orviz, a legal advisor for the northern Spain-based ALPE Achondroplasia Foundation which supports families and children with a form of short-limbed

Chaplin’s regularly post on social media sites, with messages, such as, ‘Our midget stripper show is on at 1am every night at Chaplins bar. And, ‘also available to hire for your stag/hen do’s. Want to handcuff your stag to a midget? You can at Chaplins.’ Manager of the well known bar, Manuel Nieto, defended their use of the dwarf, a Spanish man, known as Antonio, stressing that he is employed like any other member of their team. Speaking to Spanish News Agency, Efe, he said, “things have been taken out of context, Antonio is a worker who is registered, quoted and whose situation is completely normal.” He explained that his employee also performs public relations duties at Chaplin’sfor a period of

three to four hours a day, dressed as a “policeman or superhero” and has photos with customers, alongside another member of staff, dressed as a “giant”, on stilts. Nieto confirmed that his member of staff had been employed by the bar for three years, was very happy in his job and surprised by the commotion surrounding him. “His mental health and intelligence is exactly the same or better than anyone else’s, and does not believe that he is being exploited.” “Tony does it because he wants to, because he likes the job and is a showman and he can stay at Chaplin’s as long as he wants because there is nothing strange about all this.” Meanwhile Orviz stressed, “we have been fighting for more than 20 years to eradicate any kind of spectacle based on the denigration of this group.” A Valencian regional government spokesman, Natxo Costa, confirmed they will prosecute the bar, should they receive a denuncia.

Business & Money Global economy in delicate condition

THE head of the International Monetary Fund this week said that the world’s economy is “going through a delicate moment”. Speaking at the Economic Forum in Astana (Kazakhstan) Christine Lagarde noted that two years ago 75% of countries’ economies

by Simon Russell

were growing while at the moment about 70% are slowing down or going backwards. She sees the next six months as crucial and talked of commercial tensions, seen as a reference to the burgeoning USAChina trade wars that may

end up damaging both and knocking on globally. She also stressed the need for inclusive and sustainable growth, bringing the poor, women and the young into the frame financially whereby many of these groups of people are still regularly excluded.

MAY´S LAST STAND

Prime Minister Theresa May could resign later today, after a hostile reaction to her fourth attempt to bring back the EU Withdrawal Bill, which would include votes on a customs union and a second referendum. After a tense Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, May gave a speech which outlined her plans, and then repeated the details to MPs on Wednesday. A lot of her MPs either sat in stony silence, or just didn´t bother to go to listen in the first place, with hours later the Leader of the House Commons, Andrea Leadsom, resigning her post, saying that she did not agree with the changes over the customs union and referendum.

by Alex Trelinski

The bill also contains new guarantees on workers’ rights, environmental protections and the Northern Irish border. The executive of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers voted on Wednesday night on whether to allow a new confidence vote that could oust Theresa May from her premiership. The votes were sealed in an envelope, and would only be opened if May fails to resign by June 10th, and that could happen today when she has a meeting with the 1992 chairman, Sir Graham Brady. A Tory leadership contest would then kick off, as the new version

of the withdrawal bill is quietly filed away, leaving everybody wondering what happens next in the Brexit saga. The only certainties are that the UK is due to leave the European Union on October 31st, and that currently the House of Commons has failed to agree on anything, except for the fact that they don´t want to leave the EU without a deal. It´s hard to see how a new Prime Minister can change the parliamentary arithmetic, with an early general election a distinct possibility, whilst Theresa May´s last stand spectacularly blew up in her face within a matter of hours, leading to the almost certain end of her tenure of Downing Street.

Banking on new cash-points THE Valencian Community is looking at plans to address the increasing issue of municipalities that have no banks by installing ATM machines. There are 135,000 people in the Community without access to any financial services, a situation that is expected to worsen as banks save money

and encourage people to use online banking. However even for those who switch to this system, they still need to visit a bank or cash-point to actually withdraw cash, still the preferred method of payment in most smaller towns in the region. The €7 million

project will pay for the installation and maintenance of the new machines for four years when the project will be reviewed. The Community has also asked that banks and other financial entities help address the issue with initiatives such as mobile banking.

Spanish Inheritance Tax! If you are a Spanish Tax resident or deemed a Spanish Tax Resident, or are non-resident but own property or assets in Spain, your spouse/beneficiary could be liable to Spanish Inheritance Tax upon your death. This tax is known in Spain as Impuesto

De Sucesiones or ISD for short. Each region of Spain has different rates and allowances. However, the Valencian region currently has some of the highest rates of Inheritance Tax in Spain.

If you are deemed a UK Domicile (different from UK Resident) but live in Spain, this can also mean UK Inheritance Tax is payable by your estate (spouse to spouse is exempt in the UK).

Depending on the size of your wealth, ISD tax may apply to married couples on the death of the first spouse and the tax has to be paid within 6 months of the date of death. All joint assets in Spain are frozen on death, this includes Spanish bank accounts. If you are tax resident in Spain, all your worldwide assets wherever they may be located, are included in the calculation.

Spanish Inheritance Tax (ISD) and UK inheritance tax (IHT) are very complex subjects, unravel the mysteries and find out how it could affect you, your family, and/or heirs and what, if possible, can be done to reduce or mitigate it. Home&Garden THE BEST WAYS TO USE YOUR HOT TUB IN THE SUMMER

Sponserd By

Summer is here! At last, the season of sunny days and evening fireflies has returned. But summer can also bring oppressive temperatures and high humidity. On those days, the hot tub that’s your paradise on chilly fall days, cold winter nights, and carefree spring weekends can seem like a cauldron, sending you in search of a cool shower and wondering if you can use a hot tub in summer. Summertime means many different things to many different people, but it all depends upon where you live. Experiencing summer inland is very different than experiencing it along the coast, in some parts such as the northern parts of spain it can be quite refreshing most times of the year however in most case it’s typically too hot during the midday hours for a warm soak, especially in the summer. The good news, however, is that even the hottest parts of the country aren’t hot all day. The fact is, there are many ways to use your home spa in warm weather, each more pleasant than the last. Turn over, where we list a few of the best tips.

HOT TUB TIPS FOR SUMMER

Finding Balance with Morning and Evening Soaks n areas with low humidity levels, temperatures start to drop as late afternoon wanes, and then bottom out late at night. The thermometer begins to rise again as the sun does. In many places, that means twilight, dusk, and dawn are ideal times to

relax sore muscles in your hot tub’s soothing water. These windows of spa opportunity are even more open in cooler, northern areas. Hot-tubbing at night can provide tranquility on par with sitting around

a campfire and watching the stars–another popular summertime activity that turns up the heat in a different type of way. Enjoying your spa during the cool morning hours can help you relax and find balance in preparation for a long, hot summer day.

GETTING SOCIAL

Summer is a highly social season—a time when friends and family get together for barbecues or to just while away hazy days in gardens, on patios and decks, and, of course, in hot tubs. Spas with entertainment systems provide the music to match your party’s vibe and the

sports and films your guests love. From classic tunes and the latest beats to big games and summer movie marathons, Bluetooth® technology allows you to connect your home entertainment system with your spa’s remote controls. You can change the music,

turn up the volume, and more while you’re flipping burgers. Entrancing spa waterfalls and fountains augment the mood, and multicolored LED lighting ushers your gathering into the night, setting the stage for fun hot tub games or stargazing.

Chilling Out

There are many ways to enjoy your spa in the warm summer months, but the most refreshing is with an enhanced temperature control system. When you crave a cool dip on a sweltering day, but don’t have ready access to a swimming pool or beach, your hot tub can come through for you. Lowering the temperature of spa water all the way down to a brisk 15-18 degrees celcius and heat it back up again to enjoy in cooler evening temperatures. Here are a few steps that can shape your perfect summer day: Step 1: Wake up with a warm soak to gain focus and energy. Step 2: Take care of business as the morning gets going. Step 3: Enjoy a break during the heat of the day by stepping into your crisp, refreshing “cool tub.” Step 4: Raise the hot tub temperature after dinner to stave off the evening chill with friends and family.

Rainy Day, Soak Away While areas with low humidity are subject to drastic temperature ranges, areas with high humidity are subject to rain—Mother Nature’s way of beating the summer heat. Although mostlty dry we may see rain

in some regions. A summer rain storm can break a hot spell in a snap. The cool peace that follows is an invitation to appreciate the earthy scent left behind and melt into the bliss of your home spa.

Benefits of Hot-Tubbing in The Summer In addition to all the fun you can have hot-tubbing during the summer season, there are health benefits you may experience. After exerting your muscles in the yard or at the gym, your hot tub can help reduce soreness and aching. Not only can a warm spa help release tension, but the buoyancy of the water and the massaging effect of powerful jets contribute, too. Plus, enjoying your hot tub with friends and family can help to improve social connections, as

well as your overall quality of life. When the day is done, a 20-minute soak before bed can help improve your sleep. Owning a hot tub is a joyful experience, no matter what the season. Your spa routine can help anchor your day, your week, or your year, even when the heat turns up. No matter where you live—whether in Miami or the land of the midnight sun— your hot tub will reward you every day you use it.

If you’re seeking unique tranquility, and there is no threat of thunder and lightning, you can even use your hot tub during the rain. Sit back and enjoy the cool rain on your face as the rest of your body indulges in warmth.

What we do! * We deliver from 8am Friday’s being the only Weekend read across the regions of South and North Costa Blanca with 25,000 copies each week. * Our trusted distribution teams are employed directly by us not sub-contracted individuals giving us full control of our delivery routes and tracking. * Each bundle is unwrapped and placed in our distribution stands not left on the floor or outside on the street. * We receive time stamped photo images from each delivery point providing a tracked proof of delivery. * We monitor the quantities of each distribution point allowing us to adjust the number of copies being left to minimise waste.

Hawaii by Yvonne Hollywood, Worldwide Horizons Found in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is an archipelago of volcanic islands which make up the 50th State of America. The main islands are on the Southern most tip, the largest being Hawaii itself, (also known

as the Big Island or Hawaii Island, to differentiate from the State of Hawaii). The capital of the state is Honolulu, located on O’ahu. Its location in the Pacific is ideal

for beach and surf tourism, attracting millions of persons every year. The islands have a tropical climate, averaging 30 degrees in winter and higher in the summer, with a wet season from October to April and summer May to September, making it an ideal island destination when the hurricane season is taking place in the Caribbean. The tourism industry is one of the main sources of income for the islands, and you can expect to pay a tourist tax. Getting there is a short 6 hour flight from Los Angeles To Maui or Honolulu, but once there, its relatively easy to get from island to island. If you have always wanted to learn how to, there is nowhere better to learn how to surf – professional trainers provide lessons and equipment in most of the main beaches. The islands are also attractive for their abundance of nature reserves – the islands boast 21 natural parks with plenty of guided tours available, including one of the ‘Devastation Trail’, which follows the

path of the lava following the last volcanic eruption, allowing you to get a real feel for the damage that was caused. Wildlife and sea life is in abundance around the islands. There are many diving and snorkeling areas which allow you to see the fantastic underworld habitat. Covered by reefs, the area is home to an array of tropical fish, turtles, parrotfish and the very beautiful, but equally very hard to pronounce humuhumunukunukuāpua´a. Try saying that after a few drinks! If you prefer not to get your hair wet, there are two fantastic aquariums to visit, offering you the possibility of experiencing all the underwater world whilst in dry clothes. Between November and May, the North Pacific Humpback Whales start their annual migration. This can generally be seen from any of the islands, so grab a hat, suncream and book yourself a boat tour to catch sight of these magnificent mammals. Hawaii is rich in customs and folklore, expressed in traditional nights that tourists can participate in. Called a Laua, these nights consist of a traditional feast, accompanied by chanting, singing and storytelling. Traditional crafts such as basket weaving are taught, all accompanied by some exotic cocktails. Hawaii is also known for more recent history, the bombing of Pearl Harbour in Honolulu. Today, there is a memorial center and modern museum, bringing to life the events of December 7, 1941, and that provoked America to officially enter World War II. There are many different tours of the memorial, so

27

ensure that you check what is included, especially how much time you will be there. If this is not where you are staying, a tour to Pearl Island usually offers some time in downtown Honolulu too, giving you the opportunity to explore this stretch of coastline, including the world famous Waikiki beach, one of the most recognised beaches in the world. Staying in Honolulu itself lets you wander this stretch of the beach, with its designer shops, stunning hotels and, when you need to rehydrate, plenty of bars and cocktail lounges to help you to refresh! If you decide to visit any of Hawaii´s islands, read up on the Dos and Don’ts before you go. Hawaii thrives on its tourism therefore it does everything possible to maintain its infrastructure. This includes a tight control on what substances can and cań t enter, so check if your packet of nuts, seeds or piece of fruit is permissible when arriving at the airport, as the state imposes harsh fines. And, although it shouldn´t need to be said – Don’t Litter! Hawaii does not tolerate litter. Neither is it a great fan of smoking, having banned it on many public beaches. Make sure you find the designated area before you light up. And lastly, Don´t! touch the lava. Yes, it can look pretty and mesmerizing, but touching lava can end up with some devastating consequences. Stick to these (basic!) rules, and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime destination.

Exploring the tiny Island of Elba, Tuscany, Italy When people think of Tuscany, it’s the towns of Florence and Pisa that come to mind, yet this small island, just 28km long and 19km wide, with perfectly preserved medieval villages nestling in rolling hills above the sea, is like a mini version of the region with the added bonus of sandy beaches. 2019 is the 250th anniversary of Napoleon’s birth and he spent one of those years in exile on the island of Elba. He escaped at the first opportunity but he certainly left his mark. There’s Napoleon beer, a Napoleon fountain, a Napoleon seat, a Napoleon staircase and you can visit the villas where he spent his time. 19th century English tourists were the first to visit but there’s far

more to the island than the relics of a dead Emperor. Ferry to Portoferraio Portoferraio Harbour It’s around an hour by ferry from the port of Piombino in the south of Tuscany to the attractive capital of Portoferraio. It was founded by Cosimo de’ Medici in 1548 who built the impressive fortress which towers above port. He was only here for the money, specifically the rich seams of iron ore, which have been exploited since Etruscan times and are the oldest mines in the world. Portoferraio In the summer the island gets crowded by beach lovers but in late April, when the spring flowers are out, the island is perfect for exploring both on foot and by bike. I get one of the latest e-bikes with big fat tyres and set out from the attractive town of Capoliveri to explore the east of the island. The huge open caste Vallone mine scars the landscape and there’s a museum which also offers guided tours inside the underground galleries. Mining ended in the early 1980’s and nature is now taking over. The railway tracks have been taken up and they make convenient bike

trails, skirting the cliffs by the sea. Nuggets of iron pyrites, “Fool’s Gold”, glint in the sunlight as I pass rusting equipment and the huge stepped hillside where the ore was dug. The town of Rio Marina To the north, the town of Rio Marina overlooks the Strait of Piombino, facing the Tuscan coast. For thousands of years, its economy was based entirely on the mining and shipping of iron ore. The harbour, dominated by the Appiani or Clock Tower, shelters the town beach, the iron oxide leaching through the sand in contrasting colours.

In the centre of the island is Monte Capanne, at 1019m the highest point. A unique cable car, basically just an exposed basket which takes two people standing up, climbs slowly to the peak. There are fantastic views over the entire island although it’s cold and windy when I get to the top. I hike down, skirting the village of Poggio, before passing the Madonna del Monte Church and its hermitage. Napoleon used it for a secret liaison with his Polish mistress Maria Walewska in the summer of 1814, before the locals found out and he had to send her away.

Building sector flexing its muscles again

A report by the Alicante Association of Real Estate Developers that was published last week has said that the property development sector is in very good shape after almost a decade of bad times. Various factors were measured including sales, ongoing new developments and projects in the pipe-line and found it performing well on all counts. The report stated “Alicante is still a national refer-ence point in the purchase and sale of homes with only Madrid

and Barcelona shifting more prop-erties in the first quarter of 2019 with Alicante actually having the most per capita provincial sales. Houses sold to foreigners are still driving the market, accounting for 41% of the total. The report also predicts a strong second quarter this year as it includes Easter week, when a lot of purchases are traditionally made as people have time off work

Super surge by the sea PROPERTY prices at the exclusive Sandbanks peninsula on the Dorset coast rose by £162,000 (€184,000) in the last year alone, making it the hottest property spot in the UK according to major lender Halifax. The average house price there is now around £800,000 with estate agents saying that the massive rise is a matter of simple supply and demand while the “bored with Brexit” hous-ing bounce is also a factor as people

return to the market rather than wait until Brexit is resolved. A coastal location in the UK is far from a guarantee of high prices and while places like Sandbanks, Brighton and Padstow (Cornwall) will set you back half a million quid or so, for a family house in the likes of Clacton, Redcar and many Scottish towns they are a quarter of that.

WHAT THE BRITISH THINK

According to a new survey, over half (55 per cent) of Brits considering buying property in Spain aren’t worried about Brexit affecting their future, and still plan to pursue a deal. This is backed up by the fact that more than two fifths (41 per cent of people planning a purchase are either at the serious planning stage, ready to buy, or in the midst of the buying process. Some people still have worries about buying in Spain, however. For instance, a third (33 per cent) are delaying their move over concerns about getting affordable healthcare in the country. Other reasons for a delay include the complex Spanish legal process (30 per cent), being able to maintain a property in the UK (32 per cent), and the current weak pound (20 per cent). The findings come from a survey of 1,500 Brits planning on acquiring property in Spain, which was carried out by advice website Property Guides. The questions spanned a range of topics, each delivering an insight into the hopes, fears, and plans of those considering investing one of the UK’s favourite expat destinations.

For those looking for Spanish property, the most popular regions remain the Costa Blanca (42 per cent) and the Costa del Sol (38 per cent), which have attracted Brits

for decades. However, it seems some traditionally popular areas are in decline, with the Balearics (8 per cent), the Costa Brava (14 per cent), and the Canary Islands (13 per cent) attracting less interest than up and comers like Valencia (17 per cent) and Almeria (31 per cent). When quizzed over what type

of property they were looking to buy, respondents revealed that more than a third (35 per cent) are looking to invest in a villa, while almost a quarter (24 per cent) are looking to buy an apartment. Townhouses (18 per cent) and farmhouses (14 per cent were also fairly popular choices. Chris Nye, senior editor at Property Guides said: “It’s quite

easy to see that, in spite of Brexit, British people remain determined to pursue their dream move to Spain. Even faced with the uncertainties around the process, such as the strength of the pound and healthcare access, many have an unshakeable confidence that they will still be able to enjoy a high standard of life.” “Simply put, the lure of the

beautiful weather and a healthy retirement offered by Spain is too strong to be dampened by Brexit concerns, especially among retirees. Many of the people planning a move to the country will have been doing so for years, so it will take a monumental shift in the status quo to make them think twice about investing.”

Haemochromatosis

What is it? Haemochromatosis is an inherited condition in which iron levels in the body build up slowly over many years. This build-up of iron, which is known as iron overload, can cause unpleasant symptoms. If it isn’t treated, this can damage parts of the body such as the liver, joints, pancreas and heart. Haemochromatosis most often affects people of white northern European background and is particularly common in countries where lots of people have a Celtic background, such as Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Symptoms of haemochromatosis Symptoms usually start between the ages of 30 and 60. Common symptoms may include: Feeling very tired all the time (fatigue) Weight loss Feeling weak Pain in joints Men, maybe unable to get or maintain an erection In women, irregular periods or absent periods When to see your Doctor See your Doctor if you have: Persistent or worrying symptoms that could be caused by haemochromatosis – particularly if you have a northern European family background A parent or sibling with haemochromatosis, even if you

don’t have symptoms yourself – tests can be done to check if you’re at risk of developing problems Treatments There’s currently no cure for haemochromatosis, but there are treatments that can reduce the amount of iron in the body and reduce the risk of damage. There are two main treatments. Phlebotomy – a procedure to remove some of your blood; this may need to be done every week at first but can be done every few months once your iron level comes down to normal. Chelation therapy – where you take medication to reduce the amount of iron in your body; this is only used if it’s not easy to regularly remove some of your blood. You don’t need to make any big changes to your diet to control your iron levels if you’re having treatment, but you’ll usually be advised to avoid: Breakfast cereals containing added iron Iron or vitamin C supplements Drinking too much alcohol Causes Haemochromatosis is caused by a faulty gene that affects how the body absorbs iron from food. You’re at risk of developing the condition if both of your parents have this faulty gene and you inherit one copy from each of them. You won’t get haemochromatosis if you only inherit one copy of the

genetic fault, but there’s a chance you could pass the faulty gene on to any children you have. And even if you do inherit two copies, you won’t necessarily get haemochromatosis. Only a small number of people with two copies of this genetic fault will ever develop the condition. It’s not clear exactly why this is. Complications If the condition is diagnosed and treated early on, haemochromatosis doesn’t affect life expectancy and is unlikely to result in serious problems. But if it’s not found until it’s more advanced, the high iron levels can damage parts of the body. This can lead to potentially serious complications, such as: Liver problems – including scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) or liver cancer Diabetes – where the level of sugar in the blood becomes too high Arthritis – pain and swelling in the joints Heart failure – where the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly.

Intralesional photodynamic therapy for Anal Fistulas , Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Skin Cancer, Ooesophageal cancer, mouth cancer and lung cancer Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that involves the use of light-sensitive medication and a light source to destroy abnormal cells.

It can be used to treat some skin and eye conditions, as well as certain types of cancer. On their own, the medication and light source are harmless, but when the medication is exposed to the light, it activates and causes a reaction that damages nearby cells. This allows small abnormal areas of tissue to be treated without the need for surgery.Uses for PDT PDT can be used to treat abnormal cells in parts of the body a light source can reach, such as the skin, eyes, mouth, oesophagus (gullet) and lungs. Conditions sometimes treated with PDT include: • actinic keratoses – dry, scaly patches of skin caused by damage from years of sun exposure that could become cancerous if not treated • Bowen’s disease – a very early form of skin cancer • basal cell carcinoma – a type of skin cancer • macular degeneration – an

MURAL MISTAKE I don´t get modern art at all, but I had a good guffaw over a brand new mural depicting a town “emerging out of the grey” being painted over with grey paint by mistake just two days later. was Rix Aimi Artist “devastated” after the piece she created in Luton last Friday was painted over on Sunday. She said the background colour was an “ironic” element of

the Arts Council-funded mural, but staff at The Mall shopping centre had misunderstood. a said centre The communication error left the operational team thinking the artwork was “unauthorised”. It is now due to be re-painted next week, but I can see the artistic merit in plain old grey, which is my impression of Luton anyway.

Drop Quotes Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters “hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has been removed. Good luck!

The most eagerly anticipated movie release of this year for me is Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, due out in the Autumn. Directed by Quentin Tarantino, the movie is set in 1969 and revolves around Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt, who play two stuntmen buddies earning a living on the big screen. The official movie trailer, whets the appetite nicely and the lead actors appear to genuinely get on well with each other. Touchingly, Pitt and Di Caprio, in a recent Esquire interview spoke of how they both got butterflies on set, as they caught sight of the late Luke Perry, whose performance in the film was the last before his untimely death. “’Oh my God, that’s Luke Perry over there!’” Di Caprio told the interviewer, with Pitt quipping, “‘We were like kids in the candy shop because I remember going to the studios and [Beverly Hills,90210] was going on and he was that icon of coolness for us as teenagers.’” It’s nice to know Hollywood A Lister’s get starstruck too …… Can’t wait for the movie boys.

A little closer to home, if you’re at a loose end this weekend, you could do worse than head up to Benidorm Old town for some fun and frolics at the annual pink weekend. Starting tonight, Friday 24th, the action centres around the Mirador del Castell headland at the point between the two Benidorm beaches. The free event runs on Saturday night at the same time too, and has a host of local and international talent, in the form of singers, tribute acts, drag queens, dj’s, dancers and all sorts of exoticness and it’s suitable for all the family. Get there between 7pm and 1am on both nights, wear a bit of pink and have a fab time with the boys and girls. And, why not pop into Escape Bar, just down the road and say hi to me and I’ll have a pink shot of something ready for you.

Eurovision in Love Island build up a nutshell

Winner Duncan Laurence at the piano An air of inevitability surrounded last weekend’s Eurovision Song Contest final in Tel Aviv, with predictable consequences happening almost on cue. So, take a breath, here is my Eurovision 2019 in a nutshell and I promise it will be the last you’ll hear of it from me until next year …. Honest! Here goes ….. There were loads of CGI graphics on show this year, but the winner was a ballad, sung at a piano by a man with a beard. Greece gave Cyprus 12 points, Cyprus gave Greece 12 points and the Swedish entry, sung by the man who wrote the UK entry, finished second. Madonna waffled on about music uniting people, sung on autocue, then walked off with her million US

dollars. A few Palestinian flags were waved in a half hearted show of solidarity. The UK finished last and the singer blamed Brexit, claiming even Elton John couldn’t have scored any higher. The fact that Holland triumphed 44 years after their last win in 1975, gives countries such as Spain, France and the UK hope that a win may be just around the corner ….. standby Elton John. Oh and my favourite, San Marino have already confirmed their appearance in next year’s event which may take place In Amsterdam, Maastricht, Eindhoven, Rotterdam …. Or anywhere but home. Au Revoir until next year.

Downton hits the big screen

Back in the day, before TV got obsessed with thrones and games and the dark ages, there was a series that captured the viewing public’s thirst for nostalgia, but in more recent history. Downtown Abbey became required Sunday evening viewing for those who like watching posh people lording it over the poor common servants and brought in huge viewing figures for ITV. Although the last episode was shown a few years ago, the story of the Crawley family, will now continue on the big screen, from where it left off in that last episode in 2015. Written by Julian

Fellowes and based on his movie Gosford Park, Downton Abbey, the movie, is set for cinema release in September. Producers have released a first cast picture of the upcoming film,Set in 1927. The snap from the eagerly awaited blockbuster, which is again penned by Fellowes, shows the 20 principal cast members in the mansion. With most of the original cast returning alongside a couple of new faces, take a look at the photo and see how many you can name? I managed one ….. Dame Maggie Smith. It was never my favourite programme.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The 25th Alfaz Fantasy Football League came to a halt when Manchester City rounded off an outstanding Season by crushing Watford in the F.A.Cup Final at Wembley 6-0 to clinch a historic domestic treble. Congratulations go out to our overall Champion, Linda who became the 5th Lady Manager to lift our much sought after Trophy. One of the tricks of winning the Fantasy League is to unearth an hidden gem further down the pecking list and in Linda’s case her Team Tapas had two hungry Wolves Players. Jota & Jimenez who between them clocked up 271 Fantasy points and they only cost 6.9 million. After leading the A.F.F.L. for most of the Season John’s team Wee Aggies had to settle for the Runners-Up spot and despite a late challenge from Andrew’s team Ballers they just managed it by the margin of 5 points. Our other major winners are Jimmy’s Nick’s Blues who

romped away with our F.A.Cup League by 30 points over two teams in joint 2nd Dave’s The Hatters & Liz’s Cookies Crew 61. Jimmy’s team had 10 Manchester City Players in his line-up so it’s no surprise he won this Section. Obviously, Linda’s Team Tapas also won our Mark Carter Ladies Section by 56 points over Barbra’s XI. Our old Soldiers Pauline’s Vodka Army came 3rd.Martin’s Marauders pulled off a sensational win by beating Darren’s King Carrakop023 in our Weekender K.O.Cup Competition.William & Henry did well to win our Junior League after falling well behind the early leaders Olly F.C. and Ginger Ninjar. In the end they won the League by a comfortable 39 points above Blue Moon F.C. Olly F.C. just managed to snatch 3rd place from Ginger Ninjar in the last week of the Season. Kevin’s team Two for the Road won our Across the Costa’s Golden Boot League after battling it out with Bill’s East

Feek on the 16th and Sally Burrowes on the 11th they both collected a coveted Montgo Ball. We also have some knockout results. In the singles Sally Cottrell beat Keith Cottrell 2 & 1. In the pairs knockout Geoff Willcock & Richard Fox beat George Braddick & John Feek by 1 hole, and Sally & Keith Cottrell beat Gordon Gleeson & Peter Gardiner 3 & 2.

Marina Alta SOCIETY - Game on the 20th May

Twelve members of the Marina Alta Golf Society and three guests attended the Oliva Nova golf course on Monday 20th May 2019, to play in a singles Stableford competition. The Oliva Nova course was undergoing a green hollow tining which required that players play the front nine holes twice. As such this was a non-qualifying round for the Marina Alta Player of the year’s points, i.e. best ten scores during the season wins the prize. Today in 1st place it was Barry Woodcock with a whopping 41 points off a 27 handicap. Barry is not long back with us after some UK time so expect he must have been practising when the weather allowed. Well done Barry and you can expect your handicap to be cut. In second place with 37 points was David Reid off a 14 handicap. Third place went to Donna Green our only female player today with 36 points off a 18 handicap. Donna is also just back from some UK time. NTP. Hole three saw Alan Tissington take

Fifers for most of the season but unfortunately the Fifers ran our of Puff in the final stages and allowed Kenny’s Albir Boro Army to pinch 2nd spot. Joe’s Keith Lard F.C. won our newly formed Champion of Champions League when they managed to peg back a massive 52 point advantage held by Pauline’s Vodka Army. Wooden Spoons have gone out to Gary’s Upside Team(Main League) Fleetwood Gian( Junior League) Two to Leo’s Power Blueboys( Champion of Champions & Golden Boot) Ginger United (Ladies Section ) and two teams who finished joint bottom of our F.A.Cup League Tommy’s Quantrill’s Raiders

the prize while Keith Cottrell did it in two on hole 5. Keith said of this hole, “ my drive went left into the trees, I then topped a nine iron which did a Barnes Wallis effect bouncing three time before jumping up onto the green and ending near the pin” “ could I do it again, let me think about that”. Just one two today, David Reid on hole 6. Due to the fact that only nine holes were in play the game was slow and when the players had collected their prizes and it was time for the event photo, they had all gone home. The Marina Alta Golf Society is a small but friendly group of players who play every Monday at the Oliva Nova course with first Tee time being about 10.40. If you want to join this friendly group of golfers as a guest then a warm welcome will be waiting for you. a crash in the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. Despite suffering severe burns and inhaling hot toxic fumes, he made a remarkable recovery and resumed racing just 40 days later, and went on to win his second world title the following year.

WORLD CUP FAVOURITES One of the strongest-ever one-day squads assembled by England has home advantage as the 2019 ICC World Cup gets underway next Thursday, as England play South Africa at The Oval(11.30 pm start). Captain Eoin Morgan and wicket-keeper batsman, Jos Buttler(pictured together) are in tremendous form after an ODI whitewash of Pakistan, and England start the tournament as favourites, as they seek to win the World Cup for the first time. There´s been an important change to the format where as there will be just one group of ten teams, with each side

playing the other nine once, and the top four at the end of the group phase progressing to the semi-finals. The final will be at Lords on Sunday July 14th. Besides England, the other teams competing are Australia, Bangladesh, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and the West Indies. This week Jofra Archer, Tom Curran and Liam Dawson were named in England’s World Cup squad, with David Willey and Joe Denly missing out.

Barbados-born Archer, 24, qualified to play for England in March and is chosen after playing only three one-day internationals. That left one further pacebowling place in the 15-man squad and Surrey’s Curran has edged out left-armer Willey. England have opted for the specialist spin of Hampshire slow left-armer Dawson rather than the all-round option of Denly. England play warm-up matches that do not have ODI status against Australia in Southampton tomorrow and Afghanistan at The Oval on Monday.
