syracuse history Locals know Syracuse as a welcoming city with a rich and diverse history. From the native origins of the Haudenosaunee and the Great Law of Peace to becoming a hub of trade and progress, let us surprise you with everything you didn’t know about the Syracuse area! o ri g in s t o ry The city of Syracuse has a rich history dating far back before it’s official founding in 1848. When French missionaries first arrived in the area in the 1600s, there was already a bustling community of the Haudenosaunee people of the Onondaga Nation. In fact, the formation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, also known as the Iroquois Nation, occurred on the shores of Onondaga Lake, uniting the five warring nations of the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida and Mohawks under the Great Law of Peace and creating the basis for modern democracy in the West. Today visitors can explore the Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center. The Heritage Center itself tells the story of the native people of the area through the lens of the Onondaga Nation.

s a lt c ity For much of the 19th century, Syracuse was one of the top salt producers in the nation, earning it’s nickname the “Salt City”. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 turned the city into a crossroads of trade and travel into the 1900’s. The growth of salt and trade also spurred the immigrant population in Syracuse Prior to the canal’s completion, the population of Syracuse was 250 but by 1850 it had skyrocketed to over 22,000. Visitors today can stop by the Salt Museum at Onondaga Lake Park to view exhibits and artifacts from the 19th century, or tour the Erie Canal Museum, housed in the last remaining Weighlock Building from the original Canal system.

Learn about Reverend Jermain Loguen a preacher of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and area station master on the Underground Railroad who is said to have aided more than 1500 freedom seekers. The Matilda Joslyn Gage House in Fayetteville is dedicated to educating visitors about the life and values of the 19th century activist through her homestead.
