The Northeast’s largest free annual outdoor jazz fest is right here in Syracuse. The 2023 Syracuse Jazz Fest takes place in Clinton Square and welcomes top acts like Gladys Knight and Herbie Hancock. The 3-day festival is entirely free to attend.

E.M. MILLS MEMORIAL ROSE GARDEN . Come June, this rose garden is in full bloom. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee, a surprise engagement session or just to soak up the sun. Located in Thornden Park near Syracuse University, this garden is run entirely by volunteers.

The Onondaga Historical Association . Formed in 1862, OHA’s main purpose as a museum is to preserve the historical, genealogical, scientific and literary material related to Onondaga County. While donations are welcome, these exhibits are free to see.

Onondaga LAKE PARK . With waterfront views, Onondaga Lake Park is free to park and enjoy all year long. With over 7 miles of trails, playgrounds, pavilions, skate and dog parks, you’re all set for a relaxing or active day — dealer’s choice!

Murals around the city. Walk, bike, scooter and spend your time discovering many magnificent murals around Onondaga County. Armory Square is filled with beautiful interactive pieces that are fun for the whole family. Explore the culture of our city through painted scapes and portraits.

Winterfest Fireworks . Fireworks in the winter? Yes, believe it — every February Syracuse celebrates Winterfest with amazing drink contests, food crawls, ice sculptures, fun events and it’s

kicked off by a gorgeous fireworks display over the Syracuse Inner Harbor.

Immerse yourself in our area’s historic heritage through interactive displays, original artifacts and audio narratives that educate visitors about the canal that shaped Syracuse. The museum is housed in the historic Syracuse Weighlock Building dating all the way back to 1850! Admission is by donation only.

Dickens Christmas. Transport yourself back in time — to the 1800s to be exact — during the Holiday Season with Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles, NY. Beginning the day after Thanksgiving and every Saturday and Sunday through December 24th, you can interact with characters from the classic Christmas tale while you prance around stores, restaurants and the village of Skaneateles itself.

Total eclipse in the heart of New York

Visit Onondaga County on April 8, 2024 and you’ll experience a historical event first-hand — the 2024 total solar eclipse! Syracuse and Onondaga County are in the path of totality, meaning the moon will completely cover the sun, making the city go dark at 3:23 p.m. for about 1 minute and 24 seconds in downtown Syracuse.

With our impressive variety of venues, Syracuse is the ideal destination to make this celestial event your most memorable one yet. Get an extra dose of education and take the kids to the Museum of Science and Technology or hear the sounds of the wild at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo . Choose a historic spot to pair with this historic event. The Erie Canal Museum , Clinton Square and the Everson Museum of Art are some of the most iconic and historic spots in the city. Explore history, arts and the outdoors while following one of the region’s uniquely Syracuse walking tours. The Downtown Committee of Syracuse offers two self-guided expeditions. Discover historic landmarks, monuments and architecture with the Historic Walking Tour. Alternatively, the Public Art Tour focuses on urban art, murals and sculptures, highlighting 50 unique pieces throughout downtown. Experience more downtown history with the Syracuse Freedom Trail . The 11 stops on the trail are marked by blue informational signs and commemorate the history of the Underground Railroad, abolitionist and African-American historic and cultural sites in the city.

The flying elephant

Did you know that the classic story of Dumbo originated in Syracuse? “Dumbo: The Flying Elephant” was written by Helen Aberson Pearl (Helen Mayer) and her husband Harold Pearl before being sold to another Syracusan, Everett Whitmyre, who suggested they sell the story to Walt Disney. Disney quickly gave the couple an offer agreeing to publish the story and make it into a movie. A third collaborator on the project, Helen Durney was also a Syracuse native. Durney is believed to have created the original sketches and illustrations for the story. Durney’s papers, including drawings related to Dumbo, can be found at Syracuse University in the library archives.

Long-lost friends

The beloved children’s book illustrator and author, Eric Carle, was born right here in Syracuse, NY! Author of the world-renowned story, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” Carle, fondly remembered his childhood days in Syracuse. In fact, Carle hoped his book “Friends” would help him find a friend he knew from Syracuse when he was three years old, before his family moved back to Germany when he was six. Eventually in 2015, another Syracuse native and author, Sean Kirst, helped Carle find and reconnect with this childhood friend, Flo. Just recently a sign was installed outside Carle’s childhood home on John Street in Syracuse.

Breaking barriers

The daughter of Jermain Lougen, once hailed as the “Underground Railroad King,” Dr. Sarah Lougen Fraser was a local African-American leader in her own right. In 1876, Lougen became the first African-American female graduate from Syracuse University’s Medical College and one of the first four AfricanAmerican female doctors in the nation. By 1883, Lougen had moved to the Dominican Republic and became the first female physician in the history of the Dominican Republic. Lougen eventually moved back to Syracuse, settling on Wescott Street while continuing to practice. She later moved to Washington, D.C. to be with her daughter. She is remembered locally through the Dr. Sarah Lougen Fraser Center, Upstate Medical University’s children’s health clinic located on Salina Street. Mimicking the route of the Erie Canal, the newer Empire State Trail is a 750-mile bike and foot pathway that not only connects Buffalo to Syracuse and Albany, but also extends north from Albany, through the Champlain Valley and Adirondacks to the Canadian border and south to New York City through the Hudson Valley. Check out over 7 miles of lakeside trails at Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool, touted as “Central New York’s Central Park.” Here you can run, walk, bike, skate or relax with waterfront views. Clark Reservation State Park in Jamesville offers five hiking trails, including the cliff trail, with a 175-foot ledge overlook above a small lake that was formed from glacial ice during the last Ice Age. Upper Onondaga Park is a picturesque community park offering amenities such as a public swimming pool, recreational courts, playgrounds, and an arched stone bridge overlooking Hiawatha Lake, an ideal spot for a quaint stroll or photoshoot.
