The history of Stellenbosch and its surrounds is as full bodied, rich and complex as its most famous varietal, Pinotage, rooted in the town’s soil.
The first recorded history of Stellenbosch can be traced back to 1679. Then Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, established a settlement on the banks of the Eerste River, calling it Stellenbosch (which literally translates as Van der Stel’s bush). Prior to this, the area was home to various indigenous communities.
The newcomers soon identified Stellenbosch as an excellent place to settle. The fertile soil and balmy climate had great potential for agriculture. Produce was grown and transported to Cape Town to supply the passing ships. The Dutch soon cottoned on to the fact that the soil was fantastic for meeting another need – the thirst of the settlers. Soon, the hills and valleys surrounding Stellenbosch were planted with vines.
Experienced vintners were called in and, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, excellent quality wines were produced. Today, Stellenbosch wines still easily hold their own against other global wine producing regions.
Stellenbosch’s second, but certainly not only claim to fame, is as a centre of learning. School education was introduced in 1685 and the establishment of the Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church, firmly established higher education in town.
The town’s academic excellence can be tracked from the founding of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium, later the Victoria College and in 1918 the Stellenbosch University was instituted to become one of the leading universities in Africa.
The university has not only produced hundreds of achievers in the academic and business fields and political leaders, but also rugby Springboks, including the legendary Dr Danie Craven as well as numerous national sports stars.
The history of Stellenbosch has been beautifully preserved. Many of the earliest buildings dating back to 1689 still stand on the historic wine farm of Muratie. The Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture of the town centre speaks to the area’s three centuries of recorded history. These have been sensitively restored, shaded by the centuriesold oak trees which line the streets, set to stand the test of time.
In 1971 Stellenbosch became the first wine region in South Africa to establish a wine route as an organised network of wineries at which the tourist could experience the product of the vine and tune into the soul of the region’s winelands.
The Stellenbosch Wine Routes currently provide the largest co-ordinated network of wineries, each offering an unique cellardoor experience for the wine-lover and tourist.
Today, Stellenbosch is one of South Africa’s preferred tourist destinations, renowned not only for its wines, but its university, cuisine, art, sport, hospitality and culture.

How to plan your day on tHe wine route
We gladly share the following guidelines and tips with you to ensure that your visit will be enjoyable and memorable. These are guidelines only. Each cellar may operate on a different system.
Where to start
1. Consult this guide and make a list of the wineries and activities you wish to experience.
2. Decide which cellar you wish to visit first.
3. You will need at least one hour for each farm you visit.
4. Try to join a cellar tour (normally in the mornings). You will find it most informative, entertaining and interesting. Cellar tours during harvest time give you the opportunity to see how grapes are processed in the cellar. February is peak harvest time.
5. Consult the fold-out map provided.
6. Decide where you want to enjoy lunch. We suggest you arrive at your lunch venue between 12:30 and 14:00 as many kitchens close at 15:00.
7. Arrive at your last cellar at least one hour before closing time to ensure you can still taste their wines.
8. Appoint a designated driver or invest in a tour opportunity.
I’m here, what now
1. Some wineries offer free tastings, but most request a tasting fee.
2. Each cellar has a limit to the amount of wine you may taste. Ask the tasting room assistant.
3. Taste dry white wines first, proceed to red wines and sample sweeter wines last. Sparkling wines and Cap Classiques can be tasted and enjoyed between wine types to clean the palate.
The tasting order will allow your palate to progress naturally.
4. Do not swallow all wines tasted! Taste and spit out in the spittoons provided. Make sure that you drink plenty of water.
5. Smoking is not allowed in tasting rooms and some wineries are completely smoking free.
6. Some wineries may serve you at tables and others may only serve at the tasting counter. Ask your tasting room assistant.
How to purchase wine
1. Most cellars allow you to buy mixed cases of wine.
2. Wine can be delivered to your door on request. Ask the tasting room assistant for delivery options.
3. Most cellars offer fragile packaging, especially when shipping overseas.
4. Remember, wine is a perfect gift from our region.
Book a tour and relax
Book a tour and let the tour guide show you the best in the area. Most tours are very affordable and let you enjoy a relaxed day on the wine route. Tour guides are experienced and have good relations with the wine farms to ensure they tailor make a tour that you’ll remember forever. See our section on Trips & Tours in this booklet.

our sub routes
The Stellenbosch Wine Routes is divided into 5 sub routes (Bottelary Hills, Greater Simonsberg, Helderberg, Stellenbosch Valley and Stellenbosch Berg) to make travelling along the route more user friendly. Each have their own characteristics in terms of prominent wine styles, climates and geographical location. The sub routes originate from physical location and has no relation to the Wine of Origin system or any wards within the Stellenbosch region.
The winery listings that follows indicates the sub route they belong to.
Bottelary Hills
The Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy, home to a host of endangered fauna and flora can be found in this area. Although the smallest in the world, the Cape Floral Kingdom, is the richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep welldrained soils and diversity of terroir are key contributors to making this a premium viticultural area. The area is home to popular wineries like Hazendal, Hartenberg, Beyerskloof and Villiera.
Helderberg
The Helderberg sub route is home to some of the oldest wine farms in South Africa. The area stretches from Somerset West to the edge of Stellenbosch and in this area lies the Golden Triangle, a top wine growing area. The cooling effect of the moisture laden sea breezes from nearby False Bay, combined with excellent soil structures, form ideal conditions for growing noble varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. The moderating effect of the Atlantic Ocean results in cool afternoons and evenings that are ideal for growing quality grapes. This area is home
to top quality wineries like Morgenster, Rust en Vrede and Ernie Els Wines to name a few.
Stellenbosch Berg
The Stellenbosch Berg (Mountain) sub route encompasses several well-known estates and private cellars, and includes the Jonkershoek Valley. The landscape is dominated by the majestic Twin Peaks, which tower up to 1 494m high. The higher elevations and textured soils make the valley ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties. The small area between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountains produces some of the very best wines in the world. You’ll find producers like Lanzerac, Kleine Zalze, Stark-Condé and Waterford Estate in this area.
Greater Simonsberg
The Greater Simonsberg sub route predominantly has south-westerly aspects and, because of altitudes commonly higher than 200m, it is generally open to the cool south-westerly summer breezes originating from False Bay, some 25km away. The wines from this area are mainly red, made from Cabernet Sauvig-non, Merlot and Shiraz. Wineries in this region include Delheim, Delaire Graff, Simonsig, Thelema and Warwick.
Stellenbosch Valley
The Stellenbosch Valley sub route is home to a myriad of well-known estates, private cellars, hotels and restaurants. The area was crowned South Africa’s finest winegrowing area at the Novare Terroir Wine Awards in 2012 and 2014. The area boasts southwesterly aspects and a high altitude and cool south-westerly summer breezes from the nearby False Bay. Home to Neethlingshof, Spier and Jordan.

deMorGenZon
We believe that DeMorgenzon is the most extraordinary of wine estates in the Western Cape. Our slopes rise from about 200m to nearly 400m above sea level and our vistas embrace Cape Town and surrounds. We have no doubt that a biodiverse and ecologically sensitive environment produces infinitely better grapes and ultimately the finest wines.

THE PHILOSOPHY: The source of distinctive wines is quality grapes, therefore the vintner’s work begins in the vineyards. Vines vary greatly in their soil, climatic and topographical requirements and no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties. With this in mind, we select vineyards where individual varieties excel. Emphasis placed on caring viticultural practices by dedicated growers, together with careful winemaking, contributes to this pursuit of excellence in the art of winemaking.
